The Department of Mineral Resources is the lead agency in mine site environment management and control inNew South Wales. The Department introduced a Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Plan (MREMP) process several years ago in order to integrate the activities of other government agencies who may have a material interest at the mine site. The MREMP process has resulted in a spirit of trust and co-operation between agencies and between agencies and mining companies. The spirit of co-operation has been reflected in greater public confidence that mining is environmentally responsible.

A single slurry fed fluosolids roaster was chosen to replace six multiple hearth roasters in the Copper Smelter at Mount Isa as part of the overall program to increase production from 100 000 to 155 000 tonnes blister copper per annum. The paper describes factors influencing the choice of the unit, problems encountered during the commissioning and details of the present roaster operation.

In most surface mining operations, overall project economics is driven to a significant extent by the slope angles that can be achieved within the rock masses present. This is particularly true of precious metal pits in which stripping ratios can be relatively high, although examples from other non-precious metal operations (such as large iron ore and copper pits) can also be found. As a consequence, it is not surprising that in most large (deep) open pit mines, relatively small changes in slope angle (of the order of two or three degrees can translate into changes in project value measured in the tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Understanding how this potential value can be realised, and quantifying the associated risks, should be one of the key outcomes of modern slope engineering practice. In striving for optimised slope angles, therefore, mining companies and their specialist consultants are increasingly turning to more sophisticated methods of engineering open pit walls. This paper summarises contemporary slope engineering practice as well as some of the key technical issues that are either currently being researched or will need to be researched in the future. It is written in the context of the slope engineering process; namely, data collection and analysis, failure mode identification and stability assessment, slope design, slope formation, and slope (face) mapping and monitoring (the latter two activities being the primary on-going data collection functions that close the design loop).

A geologic, petrographic and geochemical study has been performed on the pyroclastic flow deposits in the coastal area of East Zhejiang Province, Southeast China. This study leads to classification of the pyroclastic flow deposits into three associations: the extrusive type, the surge type and the ash flow type welded tuff associations. Through detailed investigation and comparison of the characteristics of these lithologic associations, with emphasis on the welded tuffs, a comprehensive model has been proposed to demonstrate the petrogenesis of the pyroclastic flow deposits.

On the first of October 1991 two significant pieces of legislation came into force. Both of these are relevant to the allocation and use of minerals in New Zealand . They are the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Resource Management Act 1991.   The full legal implications of these is not fully known because the Planning Tribunal and the superior courts have not as yet had to deal with them in any detail. However, the thrust of the legislation is clear and it is appropriate to give an overview of how the statutes will operate in tandem if you are seeking to pursue or oppose any prospect, exploration or mining of Crown Minerals in New Zealand.

The main purpose of these systems is to provide managers with reliable and timely information on the current state and typical tendencies of operation of the facilities under control. Therefore, the authors of the report have aimed to assess the current situation with regard to the researches in this field and to do analysis of the most important aspects and ways of solution of the issue under consideration.

Alluvial gold was found in the Terawhiti area, West of Wellington, in the 1850s. This led to the discovery of reef gold. Periods of minor 'gold fever', company flotations, and mining activity occured between 1869 - 1973, 1881 - 1986, and in the late 1880s, with one final company active in 1911 - 1914. 1n the early 1980s, further field work was carried out. No viable mining operations resulted from any of this activity.

New ZealandÆs share of global greenhouse gas emissions, at about one fifth of one per cent, is very small. But the profile of those emissions is unique among OECD countries; more than half come from methane and nitrous oxide associated with livestock agriculture. Consequently, fulfilling its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol is potentially quite onerous for New Zealand.In this paper we use a single region, static general equilibrium model to assess the implications for New Zealand of various climate change policy options. The energy and agriculture sectors are modeled in a detailed manner to enable realistic simulations to be carried out.Choosing an optimal set of policies is made more difficult by the fact that New Zealand relies heavily on emission intensive sectors for much of its export earnings. For example, one emission intensive sector alone, dairy, accounts for over 20 per cent of all merchandise exports. Avoiding carbon leakage is therefore an important consideration in selecting appropriate greenhouse policies.Our analysis shows the degree of sectoral adjustment required is substantial. In addition, the total costs depend on the uncertain level of variables such as the global carbon price and the level of afforestation activities in New Zealand, ie the rate of new forest planting.

Laboratory testwork was carried out on an overall orebody composite, of 2.9 per cent Cu and 4.2 per cent Zn, prepared from drill core taken from the Currawong fine-grained, copper-zinc massive sulphide deposit near Benambra in Victoria. While 90 per cent of the copper was readily recovered in a concentrate of 20 per cent Cu, after grinding to 95 per cent passing 38 microns, zinc responded poorly to conventional flowsheet/reagent regimes. Experience elsewhere with the use of reverse cleaning, to separate pyrite from sphalerite, led to a series of tests in which better (but still modest)metallurgical results were obtained. The best result was a zinc recovery of 55 per cent in a concentrate of 50.5 per cent Zn. The major loss of zinc occurred in the reverse cleaning stage where the unit recovery of zinc was similar to pilot plant results achieved at Mount Isa Mines on similar feedstock. Diagnostic mineralogy suggested that an overall zinc recovery of 70 per cent was probably the practical upper limit, at a 50 per cent Zn grade.

The phenomenon of Instantaneous Outbursts, although not new to Australia, was sharply drawn to the attention of the local coal-mining industry by two isolated fatal occurrences on widely separated fields, both late in 1954. An outburst is the eruption of apparently solid coal from the face, aided by vast quantities of gas released from the coal, as the coal fails under mining stresses additional to its natural stressing.The gases involved are principally methane and carbon dioxide. The various factors which combine to produce outburst conditions range from external factors such as stresses arising from depth of cover and other causes, to inherent factors such as strength of coal,and its capacity to retain gases (sorption). Of the localities where instantaneous outbursts occur the Gard Basin in Southern France has had the greatest number and the most serious occurrences. By contrast, local outbursts have been minor.Experimental work into some influencing factors has been carried out by various overseas authorities and some research has been accomplished in Australia. Practices used in some overseas areas to improve safety of working are largely empirical, as are the local rules and recommendations for work in affected areas.The appearance of further outburst areas is anticipated as mining becomes more extensive and deeper.INTRODUCTION"Instantaneous Outbursts" can be described as violent eruptions of coal from the solid accompanied by considerable gas evolution. The projected coal is usually of small size, and a high proportion is pulverized, and may be carried and deposited over great distances by the gases, liberated from the outburst. This outburst coal is of bituminous to anthracitic rank, and the gas involved is essentially methane or carbon dioxide, or a mixture of both. Outbursts involving carbon dioxide are usually more violent and dangerous. The phenomenon is relatively unusual, being confined to probably sixteen known areas in the entire world, these areas comprising only portion of the coalfields in which they occur. Usually only one or two mines on each field are affected.

This paper casts a light on the sometimes murky world that lies between base metals product æout the gateÆ, and money in the bank. Whether your base metals are leaving the mine as a refined product, or as an ore or concentrate, the generally accepted method of value determination is a London Metal Exchange price, usually measured at some point after the material has left your control. In this paper, the structure and operation, regulation and the reasons for the use of the London Metal Exchange are explored. In addition, the risks and opportunities that terminal market pricing provides to mine managers are explained, with particular reference to hedging. The paper also deals with the structure of the sales contract, including management of shipping issues, agreement of delivered quality, documentation and administrative issues. The selection of counterparties, the role of traders in the market and the growing influence of China and India as base metal consumers and competitors are also addressed.

Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. Higher values of gold-correlated elements or elemental ratios, in samples with low gold grades, may increase confidence that gold is under reporting due to its highly nuggetty nature.CITATION:Krokowski de Vickerod, J and Ebsworth, G B, 2012. A research team at the Iron and Steelmaking department at Primetals Technologies has established new upgrading measures for improving the efficiency of the beneficiation process in ironmaking plants, relying largely on pre-existing equipment. After the upgrade, the iron content in the final iron ore concentrate was shown to be significantly higher. Remarkably, the costs for employing the respective measures are surprisingly low.This case study is based on a Kazakh iron and steel producer, whose beneficiation process is currently generating a magnetite concentrate with a final iron content of 65.65 per cent. The study shows that the implementation of Primetals Technologies’ intelligent modification measures to the current beneficiation process, the realisation of more effective dewatering, and the utilisation of an innovative binder lead to an increased iron content in the resulting pellets, reaching a concentration of 69.17 per cent (iron ore concentrate) and 66.5 per cent (pellets).The current operation consists of three closed circuit grinding stages, four stages of low intensity magnetic separation, vacuum disc filters and straight-grate pelletising. By dividing the slurry after the second stage of grinding and the third stage of low intensity magnetic separation, it is possible to divert the more iron-rich fines before they would enter the third grinding stage and the fourth stage of magnetic separation. This then reduces the load on the existing third stage ball mill. Afterwards, the ground material is treated in an additional low intensity magnetic separator and mixed with the previously diverted fraction of the fines. An improved filtration procedure, combined with the application of a highly sophisticated binder, further reduces the amount of additives needed, so that a genuine direct reduced (DR)-grade iron concentrate is produced as a result.All laboratory, pilot and pelletising test work was executed at Primetals Technologies’ laboratories in Austria.CITATION:Martens, J, Petzold, L and Hiebl, B, 2017. Andesites are a major source of aggregate for much of the North Island of New Zealand. There are regional differences with respect to some important properties of the andesites. Some are reactive with cement and are designated as potentially deleterious or deleterious by the concrete industry. Other andesites, particularly those that are slightly altered or weathered, have rather high Plasticity or Clay Indices and perform poorly in road construction.   The performance of the andesites has been investigated and can be shown to be determined by: +        the chemistry of the rock which in turn determines the chemistry of the glass in the rock; +        the presence of large amounts of groundmass glass in the rock; and +        the nature of the superimposed alteration processes. Environment of extrusion and how rapidly the rock has been cooled or chilled are also important as they determine the fabric of the rock and how much glass will be present in the rock.   There are three main types of alteration that affect the quality of the aggregate: 1.   hydrothermal alteration, 2.   late magmatic alteration associated with the devitrification of glass, and 3.   weathering.   Each of these alteration types produces different alteration minerals. In fresh andesites the devitrification of glass has an important affect on the rockÆs properties. The Taranaki andesites are shown to have unusually (in comparison with other North Island andesites) high Na2O contents, held in the groundmass glass, which is the fundamental reason for the high alkali û silica reactivity of these andesites.

With commodities suffering dramatically low real prices, mining business margins are under intense scrutiny. Unfortunately, management systems developed early this century for manufacturing are driving counterproductive behaviours that choke productivity. The paper and presentation will explain this and present a proven methodology for increasing productivity. This will be supported by operational examples from Australian and American mining management to demonstrate the importance of modern business performance measurement and analysis systems. It will explain the importance of management systems in driving organisational change to sustain superior productivity and margins. The paper will explain why many executives and managers confuse production (a measure of volume) with productivity (which measures efficiency and effectiveness). It will explain how this and other counterproductive managerial and operator behaviours and attitudes are driven by traditional business management systems exacerbated by managerial and consulting fads. The paper will begin with the simple principle that to improve results one needs to first improve the process producing the result û and will show how this is often violated. Improving productivity then boils down to:accurately identifying opportunities using sound, modern measurement, analysis and reporting systems; methodically improving operating and commercial processes, and changing peopleÆs behaviours and attitudes to sustain changes in practices. The paper will include fundamentals of applying sound measurement and analysis to:processes directly, eg cycle time charts and their impact in cyclical (non-continuous) operations commonly used in rock breakage; drivers of productivity; and process results themselves since correct analysis identifies opportunities accurately. The paper will cover the importance of practical leadership and the need to follow a simple, solid plan for changing systems that drive behaviour. Overall, it will highlight use of modern performance Measurement, Analysis and Reporting systems to drive behaviours and improve margins - without capital investment û and make executive and managerial work easier and more effective.

Since 2003, there has been an unprecedented growth in the demand for engineering, technical and project services in the mineral industries. This demand for services became evident in Australia earlier than many other markets and has since spread globally. This growth has created significant issues for the strategic direction and planning by the service provider. Such strategic questions include:- how fast to grow, how to recruit, train and integrate new staff, what market sectors to service, the selection of targeted customer sectors and managing strategic growth with short term demands and commercial reality. These factors are discussed using in depth experiences and examples that illustrate these strategic approaches. The relevance of this new industry environment to New Zealand services will be highly discussed.
