The Telfer main dome open pit is operated by Newcrest Mining Limited at a current production rate of 50 Mt/a from a pit dimension compromising 2 km strike length, 1 km width and 250 m depth. As part of the refeasibility of the Telfer operation undertaken early this decade, Newcrest identified that an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation along with an increased scale of open pit would support a new plant targeting the processing of gold and copper ore at 17 Mt/a rates. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 and broke into the open pit in late 2009. This situation is unique across the mining industry where a cave breakthrough was planned and occurred within an active large open pit operation. The SLC broke though into the west side of the Main Dome open pit into a specially prepared bench that was left at the 5384 RL of cut-back stage 3. A main haulage ramp is within 100 m from the edge of the cave breakthrough zone and this ramp passes down to the active levels which are progressing toward the 5200 RL. This paper presents insight into the mine planning and risk management associated with continued operation of the open pit operation while an active SLC breaks through. The cave breakthrough presents unique areas for risk management as there is potential for rapid propagation and subsidence. To support the undertaking, mine design and major hazard management planning has been carried out. Focus areas include; dual ramp system design, preloading the breakthrough area, monitoring of cave propagation and air gap using a seismic system and deep hole extensometers, wall stability and subsidence monitoring using radar and prism systems, and key trigger and response planning.

Extensive use of diesel-powered mobile equipment in modern mines for materials handling, such as load-haul-dump machines, constitute a significant source of heat, exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter. Provision of sufficient quantities of fresh, cool air are required to remove such atmospheric contaminants from the environment for miners, particularly at depths where ventilation constraints and associated operating costs have an increasingly adverse impact. An alternative solution to diesel equipment to combat economic, environmental, social and health challenges, are battery electric vehicles (BEV), with the potential to expand production and substantially reduce ventilation and cooling demand, subsequently reducing operating costs. In this context, this paper focuses on the introduction of a battery electric loader to a diesel fleet at one of the deepest underground mines in Australia, the CSA Mine, a high-grade copper operation in Cobar, New South Wales. Analysis of a trial battery electric loader compared to existing diesel machines is performed with regards to infrastructure, technical and operational issues. Key benefits of battery electric vehicles over conventional diesel-powered vehicles are discussed, including lower energy consumption and greater efficiency, reduction of emissions and heat, reduced need for ventilation and lower operating costs. Challenges of introducing BEVs into an operation, along with the results from the comparative study are addressed under impacts to energy consumption, equipment selection, effects on ventilation and cooling, mine design and economic viability for future fleet implementation scenarios whilst meeting production targets.

A unique sluicing process for recovering tailing impounded in a valley was developed by Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., West Coast Mines, Rosebery, Tasmania.Earthmoving equipment could not be used as most of the material to be recovered was semi-fluid. A conventional sluking method was also impracticable as there was no suitable working face from which the process could be commenced.Operations started from a flat surface, using special techniques for sinking through the tailing and establishing producing working faces as the sinking process continued.After about 2 years the bottom of the dam was reached and conventional sluicing methods could be used.

The Australian mining industry is a significant contributor to the nation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and like any industry, it must make efforts to reduce these. Medium- and long-term strategies will include the replacement of diesel engines with alternative energy sources, but what can be done in the short-term to reduce diesel consumption and hence CO2 emissions? Haul trucks are identified as the major contributors of CO2 emissions in the mining fleet and this paper focuses on firstly identifying what drives haul truck emissions and secondly, discussing what is the role of the Fleet Management System (FMS) in reducing these. A key enabler of this is having a robust fuel consumption model within the FMS, and I describe how this may be done. Besides novel approaches to incorporating fuel consumption (CO2) management into truck assignment algorithms, this paper also describes how the FMS can be used to implement and manage procedures and policies to reduce haul truck emissions.

In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. The Gosowong epithermal Au-Ag deposits, located on the island of Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, are owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, a joint venture between Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (25 per cent).The Gosowong deposit was a greenfields discovery in 1994. Subsequent brownfields discoveries, most recently in 2009, have resulted in a total endowment of more than 6 Moz Au. The three main deposits include Gosowong, Toguraci and Kencana, and as of December 2013, production comprised 5.7 Mt Au at 24 g/t for 4.3 Moz with remaining resources of 4.2 Mt Au at 13 g/t for 1.7 Moz.Mineralisation primarily occurs in multistage veins, breccias and stockwork veins, with at least four texturally- and mineralogically-distinct vein events, including: banded crystalline quartz, quartz-adularia, quartz-chlorite and quartz-sulfide stages. Vein mode, texture and mineralogy are zoned around areas of maximum dilation, vein width and vein grade. Within banded quartz-chlorite, grades of >1000 g/t Au are common. Anomalous Au-Ag-Pb-As-Sb-K-Li geochemistry in rocks is commonly associated with the epithermal mineralisation. Four major types of hypogene alteration are recognised at Gosowong: silicification (quartz-illite-adularia-pyrite) within the immediate vein zone, argillic (illite-quartz-pyrite) alteration enveloping the vein zone, advanced argillic (dickite-kaolinite-quartz) alteration above and adjacent to the vein zone and within the overlying Kayasa Formation, and propylitic (chlorite-epidote-albite-calcite-pyrite) alteration within the footwall and distal to the vein zone.CITATION:Fitzpatrick, N, Harris, A, MacCorquodale, F and Wardiman, D, 2015. The Finisterre Range on the north coast of Papua New Guinea is the uplifted forearc riagio.n. of a modern arc-continent collision. The core of the range is composed of the P- nisterre Volcanics, an Oligocene''-arc terrane. The southern flank of the range consists of a clastic sedimentary sequence which is an uplifted accretionary wedge and collision complex. This clastic sequence can be subdivided into three distinct units. To the south of aiid structurally below the Finisterre Valcanics are the Mebu beds, an Oligocene- $arly Miocene sequence of volcanolithic turbidites. The Erap Structural Complex is south of, and structurally below the Mebu 43eds. , It consists of three subunits; the 3rly Pliocene micaceous turbidites of the Sukurum unit, contemporaneous pillow basalts AF{ the Basalt unit, and Late Pliocene to Pleistocene volcanolithic turbidites of the -Nariawang unit. The Quaternary Leron Formation, a fluvial to shallow marine 'clastic unit, is the southernmdst. and structurally lowest unit of the clastic -sequence The Finisterre Range is dominated by a fold-and-thrust belt with most thrusts "dipping steeply N. Melange fabric _ is developed in the vicinity of major thrusts. "In order to effectively predict the roof collapse of underground openings using continuum models, it is imperative that a realistic failure criterion is used to represent the rock mass. However, for coal mining operations, there is still uncertainty as to the appropriate failure criterion that should be used for the coal measure strata. This study compares stability numbers and collapse mechanisms for a rectangular underground opening predicted based on three commonly used failure criteria: the standard Mohr-Coulomb, Mohr-Coulomb with a tension cut-off and Hoek-Brown. Three methods of analysis are considered: an analytical upper bound method an upper and lower bound finite element formulation the displacement finite element method.The theoretical results are also compared with field measurements of subsidence above longwall coal mining. For the standard Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, the friction angle governs the shape of the collapse mechanism, and the so-called critical width (the cavity width above which failures extend to the ground surface) ascertained from field observations in the New South Wales coalfields corresponds to a friction angle of approximately 30°. On the other hand, predictions obtained based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion consistently overestimate the critical width. The results also show that tensile failure governs the stability of the cavity and shape of the collapse mechanism when a tension cut-off is introduced for the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion.CITATION:Suchowerska, A M, Hambleton, J P and Carter, J P, 2014. Separation of Nickel and Cobalt from Manganese, Magnesium and Calcium by Synergistic Solvent Extraction - From Batch Tests to Pilot Plant Operation The synergistic solvent extraction system consisting of Versatic 10/LIX63/TBP was used for the separation and purification of nickel and cobalt from synthetic laterite leach solution after iron removal. Very encouraging results were obtained for separating nickel and cobalt from manganese, magnesium and calcium. In batch tests, the organic composition of the synergistic system was optimised and very large synergistic shifts for nickel and cobalt were observed. The ?pH50(Mn-Co) and ?pH50(Mn-Ni) values were as large as 1.65 and 2.40, respectively. The extraction and stripping kinetics of nickel and cobalt was fast. Semi continuous extraction tests were conducted with a pH profile of 5.5/6.1/6.5 in three stages at 40¦C. The nickel and cobalt extractions reached 99.9 per cent with only 5 mg/L Ni and <1 mg/L Co left in the raffinate. With two stages of scrubbing, only 2 mg/L Mn and less than 1 mg/L Mg and Ca were left in the scrubbed organic solution. With two stripping stages, the stripping efficiencies of Ni and Co reached over 95 per cent. A fully continuous pilot plant operation was conducted successfully for 280 hours. With an O/A ratio of about 2 and a pH profile of 5.5/5.8/6.0/6.3 for the four stages EX1/EX2/Ex3/EX4, both nickel and cobalt were almost completely extracted. Using a pH profile of 5.4/5.0 for SC1/SC2, the manganese scrubbing efficiency was over 96 per cent. Using three strip stages, over 98 per cent Ni and 99 per cent Co were stripped with only 64 mg/L Ni in the stripped organic solution. The nickel concentration in the loaded strip liquor reached 83 g/L, resulting in a ?Ni of over 28 g/L. The chemical stability of the system was also assessed over 12 weeks under proposed industrial operating conditions. Operation exclusively under strip conditions at 50¦C and 40¦C resulted in LIX63 oxime half lives of 1.1 and 2.1 years, respectively. Operation exclusively under extract conditions at 50¦C and 40¦C resulted in oxime half lives of 0.26 and 0.82 years, respectively. Losses of Versatic 10 were less than four per cent.

Gold mineralisation at the Macraes Gold Project is hosted in the Hyde-Macraes shear zone and can be traced for ~30 km along strike, although economic resources are confined to a seven kilometre section in the vicinity of the Macraes  township. The shear zone, which typically dips at a low angle (~20¦) to the NE, is bounded by an upper hanging wall shear and a lower footwall fault. Mineralisation occurs along the hangingwall of the shear zone as well as in low angle concordant shears and stockworks. Ore types include graphitic cataclasites with variable amounts of quartz veining, 'lode schists' and quartz-vein stockworks. Mine geology and grade control activities are designed to ensure accurate definition of ore and waste as well as the accurate prediction of ore grade. Grade control involves an integrated process of blast hole sampling, geological mapping and geostatistical modelling. Geological mapping is carried out post blasting by means of excavating trenches across are zones defined by assay data. Conditional Simulation is used to model raw assay data to define ore-waste contacts and estimate ore block grade, although, geologically defined contacts have precedence. Low angle ore zones impart a wedge shaped geometry to many ore blocks. These ore blocks are bounded by contacts that can be selectively mined to, thereby reducing misallocation of ore and minimising grade dilution.

During the initial development of Mount Isa Mines power was supplied from a temporary power plant situated near the Man & Supply Shaft. The main power plant was placed in service early in 1931 and then comprised two Babcock and Willcox boilers, fired by pulverised fuel, and two British General Electric Company's turbo-alternators of 5,000 kW. each. Both plants have been described by A. F. McAskill in the Journal of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.From 1931 power demand progressively increased due to greater production, further mine development in the harder sulphides increased pumping for mine drainage and additions to mill and smelter until, by 1935, the plant was inadequate for further output commensurate with a reasonable safety margin.Coincident with the added power demand, operating conditions involved a fuel problem which could not have been anticipated. The ash content of the fuel supplied gradually increased from 13% to 16-5%, while the melting point of the ash decreased with higher pyrite content.Temperature conditions in the furnace required careful control to cope with ash formation and slag accretions.Consequently brickwork, excessively stressed on water walls, was constantly under repair, and required suspension periods of 50% of operating time for cleaning and overhaul.Load conditions varied continually, therefore the high heat liberations in the furnace, necessary to accommodate peaks in fluctuating output, resulted in ash fusion.

Traditionally gold producers had built up hedge books to protect themselves against adverse changes in the commodity price, but diversified mining groups were staunchly opposed to hedging in any shape or form. The situation has evolved over the past few years. Gold miners have been reducing the size of their hedge books in line with the rising gold price. Commentators have talked about ædouble-digit dehedgingÆ and have suggested that this is the final countdown for gold hedge books. It sounded as if the era of hedging by mining companies was drawing to a close. But as appearances can sometimes be misleading, we decided to find out what mining companies were actually doing. Companies listed on stock exchanges are now obliged to give details of their derivatives holdings in their annual reports. Two or three years ago there was no such obligation. Our reality check was based on the latest annual report issued by three multinational mining groups; two with diametrically opposed views on hedging (Rio Tinto and Barrick) and the third (BHP Billiton) with an intermediate position. This snapshot of their derivative positions at a point in time revealed that Barrick and BHP Billiton have substantial derivatives positions (worth billions of dollars) to protect against adverse changes in foreign exchange rates and interest rates. Moreover Barrick has recently started hedging against increases in fuel prices. Despite its opposition to hedging, Rio Tinto has derivative positions worth several hundred million dollars, but these are primarily a legacy from various mergers and acquisitions over recent years or were entered into as a condition of project financing. Lastly we were surprised to discover that Barrick was holding asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP). So the idea that mining companies donÆt hedge their risks is just another urban myth.

Enhancing the understanding of gravity flow in caving operations is a key factor in the design, operation and success of caving methods. Consequently, much research has been performed to increase knowledge about gravity flow. Many valuable theories have been gained from different research approaches, which include physical modelling, numerical modelling and a limited number of full-scale tests. Recent advances in technology have allowed Codelco Chile to carry out trials using Smart Markers technology. This technology was used in Esmeralda mine’s Block-2 at El Teniente mine from August 2012 to January 2015. This paper aims to determine the characteristics of the extraction zone and obtain the data that will allow greater understanding of gravity flow for design and draw control purposes.The collected data from recovered markers were analysed using a linear interpolation of both the initial position of the markers and drawbell accumulated drawn tonnage. For each drawpoint in the trial, the regularity or irregularity of flow was analysed based on the recovered markers and the drawn tonnage. Correspondingly, the relationship between flow characteristics and observed fragmentation in drawpoints was analysed. The gravity flow of the Smart Markers revealed that current drawpoint spacing provides the interaction conditions of adjacent flow zones. However, it is possible to increase the drawpoint spacing while allowing caved rock to be extracted from the major and minor apexes.The results of this research also verified that full-scale test data are the predominant factor in the production level design and production control at El Teniente mine.CITATION:Garcés, D, Viera, E, Castro, R and Meléndez, M, 2016. Long Operations is located on the eastern slope of the Kambalda Dome in Western Australia. Kambalda hosts nickel deposits that are modelled to have formed from an exsolving sulfide melt from a parental komatiite melt. The nickel deposit model predicts a stratigraphical relationship where massive Fe-Ni-Cu-sulfides are deposited in troughs at the base of komatiite channels. The basal contact of the sulfides is generally tholeiitic basalt. The Kambalda geological sequence form a dome structure with a granodioritic core and have undergone tectonic and metamorphic overprinting, resulting in the formation of upper greenschist to lower amphibolite-facies units.On the basalt-ultramafic contact, within the Long Operations, there are two separate channels hosting seven different orebodies. The Moran orebody is the most undisturbed orebody at Long Operations, with many primary magmatic textures preserved, making it ideal for studies to improve the existing nickel sulfide formation model. Detailed exploration and production infill drilling and systematic sampling indicates consistent nickel tenor variations over the entire Moran orebody. This was also observed in other deposits in Western Australia and was explained as metamorphic variations. Similar variations are observed with some trace elements that cannot be explained by metamorphic overprint but with gravitational segregation in the liquid sulfide. Other more complex trace element patterns (eg Cr) require additional explanations and are partly originated from incorporation of underlain basalt and sediment and partly from gravitational segregation.From a mining perspective, the Moran orebody can be used as an example of modern high-speed mining, but at the same time preserving samples for the future and allowing knowledge from the geological context and geochemical signatures to improve future exploration.CITATION:Staude, S, Marriott, S, Griffith, J, Laming, C, Hammond, D, Stanfield, S and Sheppard, S, 2014. The operation of grinding circuits are vital to the success of most mineral processing operations in the provision of effective size reduction whilst maximising throughput. However these same circuits, and especially semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills, are highly interactive with product re-circulations and long time delays. This makes the optimal control of these difficult by conventional controllers, such as PID, which generally places a heavy reliance upon operations for control. In order to account for the peculiarities (such as ore type changes) and the abnormal situations that continually beset these circuits, it is necessary to adapt linear control techniques to cater for these situations. The Honeywell Hi-Spec Solutions SmartGrindTM controller is a marriage of multivariable predictive control (MPC) with techniques that provide adaptation of the control to optimise the circuit under all conditions. Optimal control is achieved by incorporating pattern recognition techniques to detect and act on discrete events (eg ore type changes) and adaptation of the MPC to account for known process and equipment non-linearities. AlcoaÆs Wagerup Refinery is the first site worldwide to have this technology applied to the SAG milling circuits and this has resulted in throughput increases in excess of two per cent and significant improvements in circuit operations. This paper describes the implementation of the control to the refineryÆs Mill 3 bauxite grinding circuit and the capacity/operational improvements achieved thereof.
