The health of the industrial minerals industry appears to be improving year by year. In fact, preliminary information suggests that only three commodities (asbestos, bromine, and sulfur-other) failed to show a production gain in 1984 over 1983. In 1983, 10 commodities failed to post gains and six remained constant. The total value of industrial mineral production in 1984 was $16.7 billion, up $1.4 billion from 1983. Cement, clays, gypsum, and crushed stone production increased. Since these are used in housing and construction, this suggests these industries are moving out of their recent doldrums. Barite and clay production also improved in 1984. Local US barite production, however, still has a long way to go to attain the 1981 high of 2.6 Mt (2.9 million st). Barite imports remain high. But they are not as high as the 1982 importation of 2 Mt (2.3 million st). Bentonite production in 1984 increased 20% in volume and 25% in value over the previous year. This suggests improvement in the drilling industry and an increase in demand for iron ore pelletizing grades. All in all, the industrial mineral industry is alive and well. And it shows signs of great improvement in the next few years. The Bureau of Mines is developing estimates of capital investment, operating cost, and selling price for underground mines producing bituminous coal by various mining methods. This study estimates the required capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for two hypothetical mines designed to produce 1.3 and 2.6 million tons per year (MM tpy)3 by using a longwall system in conjunction with a continuous-mining system. The coal properties being mined are assumed capable of sustaining a 20-year production period. Wages and union welfare payments used in this study are those in effect as of December 6, 1975, as set forth under the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement of 1974. Costs of materials and equipment are based on January 1976 indexes. Initial capital investment is $34.6 million for the 1.3-MM-tpy mine and $63.5 million for the 2.6-MM-tpy mine. Capital requirements, including deferred investments, were estimated to be $50.8 and $92.2 million, respectively. These figures translate into total capital investments of $38.51 and $34.91 per ton of annual production. Assuming a desired 15-percent discounted cash flow (DCF) rate of return, with Federal income taxes at 50 percent, the required selling prices would be $13.41 and $12.27 per ton for the 1.3- and 2.6 -MM- tpy mines.

Conversion of Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves requires a multidisciplinary approach and application of a number of Modifying Factors. The Modifying Factors for mining, particularly dilution and recovery in a caving mine are complex and can be difficult to determine. Cave flow modelling software is widely used for mine planning, scheduling and forecasting metal production. However, the conversion of Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves remains a difficult and subjective process and a consistent approach to convert Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves as part of the cave flow modelling process is not published in the literature. This is due to the difficulty in estimating the Ore Reserve that remains as cave stocks at a particular point in the mine schedule, the recovered tonnage and grade of the diluting material at various stages in the mine life, as well as the Mineral Resource classification of both the recovered and diluting material that forms the Ore Reserve. The key principle of this paper is the tracking of the Mineral Resource classification in the flow model used to estimate the Ore Reserves. This is critical to defining the Ore Reserve as Proved or Probable and enabling transparency in the reporting process. An approach for dealing with mineralised external dilution in the Ore Reserve estimation process is also provided.This paper outlines the approach to convert Mineral Resources into Ore Reserves developed at the Ernest Henry mine sublevel cave (EHM SLC). The same method could be used in any cave mine and applied at any stage of the mine life. The process replaces broad-brush assumptions for the mining Modifying Factors, such as dilution and recovery, as these are determined numerically as part of the model computation. This paper explains the Ore Reserve estimation method with a worked example to enable the reader to adopt the process at any caving mine. Mineral Resource classification within the block model is embedded in the cave flow model and the flow model results used to attribute tonnes, grade and the mixed proportions of the Mineral Resource classification for material extracted from each drawpoint. This information is then used to convert planned mine production into the appropriate Ore Reserve classification. Since the flow model simulation follows the mine schedule, it can be used to predict depletion and cave stocks at any stage of the mine life, and can calculate a residual block model at the end of the mine life. The accuracy of the flow model is checked by validating the forecast ore grade and metal tonne with reconciliation data from the concentrator which is also used to calibrate the flow model.CITATION:Campbell, A D, 2017. The Al-Zn-Mg alloys (e.g. 7004, 7020) are employed for land transport and architectural applications whereas the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys (e.g. 7075, 7050) provide the high strength aircraft alloys. The Cu gives rise to suitably sized and distributed precipitation but causes high quench sensitivity. Their hot work processing also has marked differences; the Cu-free alloys have good extrudability whereas the Cu-bearing alloys have low extrudability and are difficult in rolling as well. The behaviors of the two classes are described in terms of flow stresses and ductility over 300 - 500°C, along with constitutive contrasts. The ductility of the alloys with Cu is much reduced above 400°C by precipitation of a phase at the grain boundaries that can be avoided by suitable heating schedules. The high strength alloys are subject to de-lamination corrosion of sheared edges due to severely pancaked grains; this can be alleviated by holding between passes, in mid-rolling schedule. In torsion tests at 10-1 to 10 s-1/ 250 - 500°C, the stresses (ductilities) at 300°C/ 1s-1 and activation energy Q for 7004 were 118 MPa (2) and 262 kJ/mol. The 7075 was tested after several pretreatments: completely over-aged (softened): 107 MPa (5), Q=150 kJ/mol; whereas, solution and quick cooling to testing caused extraordinarily high peaks related to dynamic precipitation resulting in 160 MPa (1.2), Q=300 kJ/mol.

Pebble grinding was used at Lake Shore Mines in 1949. A full description of experimental evidence and test plant results was published in 1952 1 and further operating details in 1954 2.' In more recent years the term autogenous grinding has been coined and is now frequently seen in the technical literature. Autogenous crushing and/or grinding covers any grinding mill in which the larger pieces of ore are made to grind the fine pieces; the crushing and grinding may be either dry or wet. This discussion deals only with wet autogenous grinding, and only in the fine grinding part of the circuit, i.e., from 6 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. The term pebble milling could apply to fine autogenous grinding in which the pebbles are made from the ore itself, or it could also refer to grinding with pebbles, such as flint pebbles, from a source outside the mine. The first mill to use screened ore to grind the ore (1949) was Lake Shore Mines, Kirkland Lake, Ont. Pebbles were screened from the jaw crusher discharge and used in 5x16-ft tube mills which had been converted to 6 ft 8 in. by 16-ft grate discharge pebble mills. The same general practice was adopted the following year by the Wright-Har-greaves Mine in Kirkland Lake. Shortly after that the Neptune Mines in Nicaragua started correspondence with the writer concerning the possibility of using screened ore for grinding in their plant. They first ran some plant-scale tests which confirmed the Lake Shore findings, with the ultimate result that their plant was successfully converted in 1956 to an autogenous grinding plant. In 1957-1958 the writer was successful in converting the grinding plant of Renabie Mines in northern Ontario to autogenous grinding. In all these plants the existing grinding equipment was converted, usually by expanding the diameter of the shell to make the change from steel grinding to ore pebble grinding mills. In all the above plants primary grinding was done in either small rod mills or ball mills. These mills first reduced the pebble mill feed to about 6 mesh. The final grinding in the pebble mills varied from 75 pct —200 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. At Lake Shore three stages of pebble milling were used, with a different size pebble in each stage. In other parts of the world interest was being shown in this form of grinding, and in March 1952 the writer had some correspondence with the mill staff at Outokumpu in Finland, with regard to the pebble system used at Lake Shore. At Stockholm in 1957 the account of the crushing and grinding system at Outokumpu was presented in a paper by H. Tanner and T. Heikkinen.V his is the only ore grinding plant that does not use grate discharges on its pebble mills; trunnion discharges equipped with heavy reverse spirals retain the pebble load. The first new mill designed to use screened ore as a grinding medium was the Bicroft mill at Bancroft, Ont., which began operation in the fall of 1956. In 1957 this plant was followed by similar installations at Faraday Mines, also in the Bancroft area, and the North Rankin Nickel Mines in the North West Territories. In 1958 the Dyno Mill at Bancroft was converted, using the same type of grinding. Since all these plants, designed by Kilborn Engineering (1954) Ltd., were originally planned as pebble grinding mills, they were able to take full advantage of the latest design and technique. They are neat in appearance and very efficient and easy to operate. Effect of Ore Hardness: It is often commented that this type of autogenous grinding applies only to hard siliceous ores. Experience has shown that this is not so. In the past ten years the author has had an opportunity to test more than a dozen ores, several of which were quite soft. One of these was shale. The softer ores actually make better looking pebbles than the hard ores. These soft ores produced no particles in the intermediate size range which could not be ground by the largest pebbles in the mill charge. Slabby ores, such as shales, make a suitable pebble for the —6 mesh grinding. It is not generally recognized that for fine grinding a spherical medium is not essential or more efficient. Another frequent objection to pebble grinding is the belief held by some operators that there is too much variation in the hardness of their particular ore to make it acceptable as a source of pebble media. Experience has also shown that this is not a serious problem at all. The variation in pebble load due to changes in the ore hardness is nothing like as great as most people would expect, and the method used for feeding the ore and controlling the the load in the mills is more than sufficient to take care of daily variations in ore hardness. This discussion is concerned with the method of manufacturing, the design possibilities, and the properties of pole pieces for direct-current electric . motors and generators made from iron powder. In such applications as pole pieces, the electric and magnetic properties of the material are of major importance, therefore they are discussed somewhat more fully. However, the main advantage in making pole pieces from powders lies in the rapid and inexpensive method of manufacturing these pieces, and in the flexibility of design, rather than in their superior electrical properties. As a matter of fact, pole pieces from iron powder have found their principal field of usefulness in small electric motors for controls and similar applications where the highest possible flux density in a given design is not required. Fig. I shows a number of different designs for pole pieces made from iron powder. The steps involved in fabricating them are: (I) briquetting—with each stroke of the briquetting press a complete . pole piece is produced; (2) sintering, and (3) sizing, which is a one-step coining operation in a hand-operated punch press. Conventionally small pole pieces are made from laminated electrical sheet steel stock by punching out the laminations and riveting them together (Fig. 2). The powder method has the advantage of being rapid and inexpensive; also, it makes possible the molding of pole pieces with a round hub, which are better from a design standpoint, as will be shown later. It is difficult to make such round-hubbed pieces from laminated stock. The pole pieces could, of course, be machined from solid stock, but this method is not widely used. The raw material for making pole pieces from powder is straight iron powder without the addition of any alloying ingredients. However, the grade of powder used is of considerable importance, as will be shown later when the influence of the grade of iron powder upon the magnetic properties is discussed. Pole pieces are briquetted in the same way that other iron-powder machine parts are made. Because the pole pieces are flanged—i.e., they have a hub and a wing section—they are made in presses that apply pressure from both ends. For best mechanical and magnetic properties, the density throughout the piece should be even and also should be constant from piece to piece. For that reason a powder of constant compressibility from batch to batch is needed for briquetting pole pieces. One method of obtaining the required magnetic properties is to sinter the pole pieces at temperatures higher than are used for most iron-powder parts. A temperature of 2400°F. and an atmosphere of hydrogen has been found satisfactory. No automatic furnaces of the roller hearth or mesh-belt type have yet been developed for such high temperatures. This report presents depth and producing rate statistics pertaining to oil reservoirs (or fields) in each of the 14 States that produced more than 20 million bbl of oil during 1965. The combined oil production was about 2.6 billion bbl, or 96 pct of the U.S. total. Data are presented for each of the 14 States, each Texas Railroad Commission district, and four geographical areas of Louisiana. About 8 pct of the total oil produced in the 14 States was from depths of lees than 2,000 ft, 24 pct from 2,000 to 4,000 ft, 22 pct from 4,000 to 6,000 ft, 16 pct from 6,000 to 8,000 ft, and 30 pct from 8,000 ft and deeper. The average production per well in the 14 States ranged from 4.4 bopd for wells less than 2,000 ft deep to 57.6 bopd for wells 8,000 it and deeper. Data indicate that 9.5 pct of the 460,968 wells produced more than 1.2 billion bbl or 46.6 pct of the total oil. Oil production from reservoirs (or fields) not undergoing stimulative recovery operations, such as steam, air, gas, or water injection, wee about 1.1 billion bbl or 42.1 pct of the total.

"Due to the randomness of all factors influencing the sintering operation, a two-stepped procedure is proposed to find the best way of using stocked fines at a plant producing Fe-Mn alloys for the steelmaking industry. The approach is based on the following: (1) predict the result of the sintering operation by establishing the best multilinear regression model using some of the characteristics of the loaded material; and (2) find the best solution under a minimizing cost criteria by solving a linear optimization problem using the regression equation plus constraints on the feed and product. IntroductionSome tests carried out using 20% to 30% of sinter in the material loaded into a 60 000 KVA Tysland-Hole electric furnace producing Fe-Mn alloys for the steelmaking industry indicated: (1) a meaningful decrease in the off-gas temperature and, consequently, a better energy use due to the material higher porosity; (2) more uniform heat distribution as a consequence of the electrode reaction zone enlargement; (3) an improved furnace control resulting in a smoother operation; and (4) a decrease in gas production facilitating the off-gas treatment. For some years, this plant used only the coarse fraction of the Mn ores, thus stocking all the received and own-generated fine particles. In view of the mentioned results, a strategy for increasing the use of stocked fines was formulated, including a step where it was necessary to decide which components and respective quantities should be used in the blends to be sintered (Almeida, 1984).It is well known that several factors affect productivity and energy consumption in sinter production, also influencing the product quality. Raw materials characteristics, namely chemical and size composition, affect permeability to gases and may or may not allow a deeper bed. In general, finer ores decrease permeability, increasing electricity consumption by fans, but due to their higher specific surface area, react more completely with other components in the mixture. For coke granulometry, a compromise must be obtained in order not to burn it too quickly nor to widen the flame front, therefore decreasing productivity. Decreasing coke in the blend also acts in sinter bonding, decreasing its consistency and increasing crushing and return fines. Moisture addition also influences components mixing, pre-agglomeration, bed permeability and, consequently, sintering productivity. Therefore, optimum conditions must be established for both a given sintering plant and the components in the feed (Dawson, 1993)."

Lidding over or tunneling existing transportation infrastructure is currently under review in several U.S. cities. The main reasons for this are the use of the created space for urban development, the reduction of noise and exhaust fumes for the residents, and, thus, a significant increase in the quality of life. The main aspects to be considered during the planning process are (1) total investment and operational costs, (2) impact of construction works on current traffic, (3) safety and fire protection, and (4) socio-environmental issues. The paper presents some basic planning principles, and experiences of recent urban highway coverages are shared.

The transformations in eutectoidal systems have been extensively studied as they occur in steels.&apos; As a consequence of these studies the martensite, bainite and pearlite reactions found for most steels are widely recognized. Further, because of the work of Smith and Lindlief2 and of Greninger and Troiano3 these reactions, except for the bainite reaction, are considered as typical for all eutectoidal systems. The primary alloy studied by Smith and Lindlief2 was a CuAl alloy of near eutectoid composition as was the alloy more recently studied by Mack.4 The transformations in these alloys were, for the most part, studied metallo-graphically, while an X ray analysis of structures was essentially wanting. It has appeared desirable, therefore, to investigate selected CuAl alloys at and slightly away from eutectoid composition. For this purpose three alloys were prepared containing 10.5,11.9 and 13.5 pct A1 respectively. The results of a metallographic and X ray analysis of structures obtained for isothermal transformation of the ß-phase are reported here for the 11.9 and 13.5 pct A1 alloys. Introduction The phase equilibria in the CuAl alloys of immediate concern are indicated in the equilibrium diagram section presented in Fig 1.5 The equilibrium and transition structures which have been reported in this system are as follows: a = copper rich terminal phase (f.c.c.) ß = high temperature eutectoidal phase (b.c.c.) r2 = aluminum-rich intermediate phase (r-brass structure) a&apos; = modified a-phase postulated by Bollenrath and Bungnrdt.26 ß1 = ordered ß (b.c.c.) ß&apos; = martensite structure: A1 < 13 pct (near h.c.p.) ß" = ß&apos; of Smith and Lindlief2 7&apos; = martensite structure: A1 > 13.5 pct (h.c.p.); ß2 of Bollenrath and Bungardt.26 The eutectoid transformation can be suppressed at sufficiently high cooling velocities. The ß-phase is then retained to about 500°C where ordering sets in. The ordering interval is not satisfactorily known but indirectly appears to be non-suppressible. Subsequent to the ordering reaction and consequently at lower temperatures, the ordered ß1 decomposes to a marten-sitic structure. The kinetics of these reactions and in particular those of the martensite reaction have an important bearing on the results obtained in this investigation. Since some confusion exists concerning certain reported aspects of these reactions, they will be considered in some detail. THE latest metal-mine accident report available for the United States is that of the Bureau of Mines for the calendar year 1919. Quoting from Table 20, p. 53, of that report, we find that there were 468 men killed, 7 permanently totally disabled, 321 permanently partially disabled, 7848 injured seriously (more than 14 days disability), and 23,330 of 1 to 14 days disability. We have no records to show what the average days lost per case of accident is, but the records for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. show that, leaving out the fatalities and total permanent disabilities, and counting those in which the lost time was one or more days, the actual days lost due to accidents, for the Butte mines and shops for five years, 1917-1921, were as follows: Accident Statistics, Butte Mines and Shops of A. The figure of $70 per case was obtained by dividing the total amount paid by metal-mining companies under Plan No. 1 of the Montana Compensation Law, for the first five years of its operation, by the total number of serious accidents for those years.

The rare-earth elements, sometimes known as the lanthanides, comprise the series of 15 chemically similar elements with atomic numbers 57 through 71. Yttrium, with atomic number 39, is often included in the group, because its properties are similar and it more often than not occurs in association with the lanthanides. Thorium is included in this survey due to its close association with the lanthanides, particularly in the mineral monazite. The lanthanides were first recognized as elements around 1750 and were the subject of much study by chemists during the 19th century. The purely chemical methods then available failed to resolve the strange intimate relationships between these elements, and it was not until about 1920 that the full series was explained.

The current study examines the extraction of rare-earth elements from trichromatic phosphor of discarded tube lights via baking processes. The Y2O3: Eu3+ (YOX) and BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+ (BAM) phases completely decomposed during acid and alkali baking with > 90% Eu and Y extraction. Prior, selective acid leaching of the YOX phase enhanced the acid baking process at a lower temperature (< 230 ℃). Feed acid baking showed a maximum 87% Tb, 36% La, and 17% Ce extraction at 500 °C, 0.5 h, 1 ml/g H2SO4, and alkali baking yielded 16.1% Tb, 86% La, and 73% Ce at 300 ℃, 0.5 h, 50 wt.% NaOH. The acid baking of the acid-leached phosphor yielded 72% Tb, 95% La, 63% Ce, ~ 95% Y, and Eu extraction at 300 °C, 0.5 h, 1.05 mL/g H2SO4. Lower Tb extraction during the acid baking of acid-leached phosphor can be attributed to the formation of Ba3Tb( PO4)3 and BaTbO3 phases. Insoluble Si3Tb5 phase formation and partial decomposition of CeMgAl11O19: Tb3+ (CMAT) phase in the alkali baking route leads to lower Tb extraction. The acid baking process is suitable for extracting Tb, Eu, and Y, whereas the alkali baking process is suitable for La and Ce. The thermal analysis of phosphor and flux interaction depicts that alkali baking is less energy-intensive than acid baking. In comparison, the one-step acid baking process and the two-step alkali baking process yielded desirable extraction results (87% Tb, total RE (rare earth) 78.5% and 50.4% Tb, total RE 59.3%). The product yield in the acid and alkali baking route of feed, acid-leach phosphor is 36%, 29%, and 39%, 28.2%, respectively, with ~ 98% mixed rare-earth oxide purity.

The Safety Pays in Mining v2.0 web application, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app categorizes injury cost by part of body injured, by the cause of the injury, or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of over 150 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, Safety Pays in Mining v2.0 will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries and the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits and will provide some examples of services and personal protective equipment on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the Safety Pays in Mining version 2.0 web application by discussing the development and updates to the app, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using this app.

While Utah remains an unimportant factor in oil production, exploratory drilling was carried on in six widely separated areas, extending from the southwest to the northeast corner of the state. One new gas field, the Last Chance or Starvation Creek anticline in Emery County, and two new gas horizons in the Clay Basin field of Daggett County, were thereby discovered during 1934. Exploratory Drilling South Central Utah Emery County—Last Chance Anticline.—The test of the Ramsey Petroleum Corporation in sec. 18, T.26S., R.7E., on the apex of this anticline (vert. closure 700 ft.; area within closing contour line, as mapped by U.S. Geological Survey, 26,000 acres) encountered gas in the Moenkopi formation of lower Triassic age at depths ranging from 2530 to 2863 ft. The total thickness of sandstone, sandy shale and -limestone beds in which gas was encountered is approximately 50 ft. The well was tested at a depth of 2755 ft., gaging 21,000,000 cu. ft. of gas, R.P. 410 lb. The well is being plugged back to the lowest gas horizon at 2771 ft. from a total depth of 3168 ft. Gas from this well probably will be used for the drilling of a second well structurally lower, to test the oil possibilities of the Moenkopi formation as well as of the upper and lower Pennsylvania formations, of which the latter so far remains untested in South Central Utah. Woodside Anticline.—This field, lying immediately northeast of the San Rafael swell, contains, according to maps of the U.S. Geological Survey, 8380 acres within its lowest closing contour line 700 ft. below the apex. A well was drilled by Utah Oil Refining Co. at the apex in sec. 12, T.l9S., R.l3E., during 1924. Gas was encountered in the Moenkopi and Kaibab formations of Triassic and Carboniferous (Permian) age respectively. The flow is estimated at 21,000,000 cu. ft., R.P. 900 lb.,

The paper discusses assay methods generally used when prospecting for gold, and also the applicability of various chemical methods, it describes a new paper chromatographic technique.for making fairly rapid semi-quantitative assays for very fine gold. Testing of the method in field work shows that this simple method could have applications in geologic work, in prospecting and in certain routine mine sampling work. It is not yet a method that can be used to detect anomalies in traces of gold dispersed around an orebody, as is general practice in geochemical prospecting.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the English economist Harrod (1958), &quot;the acute shortage of gold in the world-because currency value has not been adjusted in line with the fall in the goods value of the various currencies-has been a familiar fact for some time now&quot;. Harrod calculates that a rise in the price of gold to double its present value is necessary to rectify this condition, and that, if this rise were to take place, increase in production and reduction in private hoarding might well bring annual accretion to world stocks from the presentaverage of about $464 million to a figure close to the $2,000 million that would probably eiiminate these shortages.Any increase in the price of gold is bound to lead to a great increase in prospecting at working mines, in abandoned areas and possibly in untouched country. Prospecting, techniques for base metal orebodies have improved greatly in the last thirty years; but methods available to detect gold occurring without accessory metals have not received the same attention. Mine worker exposure to respirable coal dust and silica dust can result in coal workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis which are occupational respiratory diseases that have no cure and are ultimately fatal. In 2021 the Mine Safety and Health Administration reported just over 11,000 operating metal/nonmetal mines with the potential for silica dust exposure for just under 200,000 miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts respirable coal and silica dust research associated with mining through its Office of Mine Safety and Health Research. NIOSH respirable coal and silica dust research began under the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), which initially examined silica dust, progressing to include coal dust, with a stronger focus after 1969 with the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. A review of extramural research to develop real-time respirable silica dust monitor is presented along with a brief history of silica dust regulation.

ABSTRACT The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment recognizes the importance of environmental protection as an important contributor to Saskatchewan’s economy, with the environmental performance of industry closely monitored. Unfortunately, environmental regulation is often accompanied by significant process that does not always add value to environmental protection activities. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has embarked on a visionary restructuring of its regulatory framework from conventional command and control regulation to a results-based regulatory framework. This new regulatory framework will provide for establishing clear environmental protection and resource management objectives; streamlining the environmental acts and regulations; developing an environmental code of practice; relying on qualified persons; enhancing compliance and enforcement tools; eliminating of many permits; and developing greater certainty in environmental assessment decisions. Results-based regulation promises to deliver enhanced environmental protection with less process. The uranium industry in Saskatchewan will be used as an example of the potential effects of results-based regulation.

The use of uranium metal in non-ferrous metallurgical practice is dis-cussed with reference to its alloying behaviour and chemical activity. It is suggested that the more promising applications are in the treatment of molten metals to combine with impurities. Mines Branch work along these lines is described for copper, zinc, magnesium, aluminum and nickel alloys. It is shown that a cop-per-uranium master alloy (25 per cent U) successfully deoxidizes molten copper without detriment to the electrical or mechanical properties of the product at residual uranium levels of up to 0.8 wt. per cent. Additions of uranium to alpha brass in amounts greater than the lead impurity content were found to remove the deleterious effect of lead on hot-workability. Similar deoxidizing and malleableizing effects were found with uranium additions to nickel. It is thought that uranium forms stable intermetallic compounds with many impurity elements. A significant malleableizing effect can therefore be expected in the presence of other elements besides lead.
