"Since the quality of Vacuum Arc Remelted ingots is linked to their chemical homogeneity and metallurgical structure, a modeling study of the solidification during VAR has been undertaken. It is based on the solution of the coupled transient heat, momentum and solute transport equations during the remelting of a cylindrical ingot. Solidification mechanisms implemented in the model include a full coupling between energy and solute transport in the mushy zone, and accounting for nucleation and finite diffusion of solutes at the microscopic scale, in both solid and liquid phases. This modeling can be applied to actual multi-component alloys. In this paper, the macrosegregation in Zircaloy 4 ingots is investigated. To validate the model, one single melt of a homogeneous electrode has been specifically performed. The comparison between the predicted macrosegregation and the experimental results shows the importance of accounting for solutal convection to forecast properly the macrosegregation in remelted ingots.IntroductionVacuum Arc Remelting of zirconium alloy ingots is a key step in the manufacturing process of fuel assembly components in nuclear reactors. The control of the chemical homogeneity is indeed fundamental to ensure the quality and the in-reactor performance of the final products. Despite the use of electromagnetic stirring to homogenize the liquid melt composition, chemical heterogeneities develop in the mushy zone during the solidification stage. One of the main challenges for zirconium producers, as well as titanium producers, is to master the VAR process in order to control the macrosegregation in remelted ingots. Macrosegregation results from the association of microsegregation and transport phenomena. The latter are primarily due to the flow in the liquid and mushy parts. It is now well established [1-4] that the hydrodynamics of the melt pool in a VAR ingot depends on the combined action of the followings: thermal and solutal buoyancy, self-induced electromagnetic force and the periodic centrifugal force caused by the angular movement generated by the stirring. However, for zirconium alloy ingots, the effects of thermal and solutal buoyancy forces on macrosegregation through their influence on the flow in the mushy zone have not been clearly identified."

Teams continue to play a major role at the Phelps Dodge Mining Company El Paso Operations, especially during the present time of low copper prices. The El Paso Operations' teams have taken the initiative during this copper market downturn and have helped reduce operating costs significantly. Because of this, Phelps Dodge El Paso Operations has continued to grow within the team process by creating a total, non- exempt salaried workforce. In the last year alone, the El Paso Operations have implemented three major initiatives to accommodate the team process. The first was the creation of "guiding principles", a policies and procedures handbook. Second was the "zero and beyond" safety initiative. Third was team compensation. In addition, the Copper Products Company has now adopted a work-team environment, following the lead of the refinery.

The gasification of wastes containing an organic fraction is usually performed at low-medium temperature using different kind of catalysts. The off gas obtained is a mixture of carbon oxides, mainly carbon monoxide, and hydrogen and can be used for different energetic applications. The main problem is the production of tars in the off gas that has to be separated from the valuable gas flow and, finally, treated separately. An interesting alternative is the partial or total treatment of organics at high temperature. In this case, the off gas contains a higher content of hydrogen and elemental carbon as particulate matter. The energetic source to obtain a temperature in the range of 1,000 - 1,200 ºC is obtained by a plasma torch. In order to make de process attractive, an important issue to be considered is to commercialize the carbon obtained for different industrial applications.

The Tyrone copper solution extraction and electrowinning plant was the first such facility built by Phelps Dodge Mining Company in 1984. Over the next 20 years, the aqueous flow rate capacity of the plant has been expanded from the original design of 12,000 gallons per minute (gpm) to 34,000 gpm to meet production goals in the face of declining copper grades in the leach solutions. The ability to process higher aqueous flow rates through existing equipment comes at the expense of increased organic loss through entrainment to raffinate. These losses of organic (diluent and extraction reagents) can account for up to 10 percent of the plant?s total operating costs. With the recent dramatic price increase of petroleum-based products, these operating costs due to losses are sure to increase. This paper will discuss recent improvements at the Tyrone SXEW plant that have resulted in a 40 percent reduction of organic losses. These improvements include picket fence modifications, new fence materials, organic recovery systems, and operational practices within the solution extraction process.

In the thiosulfate gold leaching process, thiosulfate is used to complex gold following electrocatalytic oxidation of the native metal by Cu(II)-ammines. Unfortunately, Cu(II) complexes also catalyse the undesirable conversion of thiosulfate to polythionates. We have been seeking alternatives to ammonia, which fulfil the role of ammonia but minimize thiosulfate decomposition. One aspect of these studies has involved the determination of the rate of thiosulfate oxidation by the Cu(II) complexes from UV-Visible spectral changes. Various ligand classes, including pyridyls, polyamines, aminocarboxylates and picolinates, have been tested and the majority found to inhibit thiosulfate decomposition. Interesting variations in reactivity with the nature and denticity of the ligand and L/M ratio have been observed. In the case of open chain polyamine ligands with 2 to 5 nitrogen donors, the rate of thiosulfate oxidation was generally found to decrease with the denticity and the concentration of each ligand. Saturation of the Cu(II) coordination sphere appears to inhibit the oxidation of thiosulfate when excess thiosulfate is present. The Cu(II) complex of the branched polyamine ligand, tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) exhibits this behaviour in excess thiosulfate. Interestingly, when the [Cu(tren)(OH2)]2+ complex is in excess oxidation of thiosulfate was observed. This unexpected finding prompted a spectrophotometric study of this reaction which has revealed that the oxidation of thiosulfate involves several processes, two of which involve the formation and decay of a tetrathionate radical.

A common international safety and health management system was developed. Analysis of selected major safety and health management systems from around the world was conducted. Functional elements of selected systems were grouped to identify common elements and key differences. Common elements were subjected to qualitative judgments of equivalency and then reconciled. With few exceptions, differing elements were revised to achieve cultural neutrality. The resulting 98 system elements were organized according to the NOSA numbering and title scheme. System summaries were produced in Spanish and English. A pre-implementation self-assessment evaluated conformance in three distinct cultures. The consensus 98 element system was internally named the BHP Copper Five Star Safety System Performance Management Guidelines. Development of a common system within an organization with international operations can enhance the ability of the staff function to share resources, programs and subsystem improvements and thereby increasingly protect workers. Common systems can increase the level of management support by demonstrating increased compatibility of the safety and health management function with traditional business objectives. Safety professionals, industrial and occupational hygienists, business managers and the safety and health of workers will benefit from further development and articulation of common systems for safety and health management.

"This presentation is being given to better inform the audience of the dependability of precious metal analysis by fire assay. A brief explanation, however, of standard fire assay exploration procedures will be given. An overview of other types of analyses by fire assay will be discussed as well, and the operation of a modern day assay laboratory.IntroductionThe use of lead oxide for the fire assay process dates back to the finds in Troy II and the Cappadocian Tablets about 3,000 B.C. Some advances have been made in the basic procedures due to instrumentation and electronics, but the fusion and cupellation procedures used in fire assay remain much the same as during this period.In 1600 AD. Agricola was the first to take a scientific approach to fire assay recording methods and procedures used (Hillerbrand and Allen, 1905) [1]. Since this period, much of the recognized research into the analysis of ores and metals was carried out in the late 1800's and early 1900's prior to World War II, and again after the deregulation of precious metals. The renewed interest in precious metals mining and metallurgy are due much to advances in precious metals heap leaching in late 1970's."

The recycling of metal containing scrap is a common practice in the industry and has a long tradition. . In rec~nt years, this philosophy has been transferred to organic materials, in particular to thermoplastic polymers. BSB . Recycling GmbH, a company with a long experience in the treatment and recovery of lead from battery scrap,· had recognized this exploitation at an early stage and challenged it by a consequent continuation of the idea to recycle materials other than metals without degradation and maintaining the quality. These efforts resulted in an economic and environmentally acceptable solution producing high quality polypropylene compounds at BSB beside lead and lead alloys from battery scrap. The raw material fair the production of polypropylene compounds is shredded plastics from the separated casings of spent lead-acid batteries. The production of polypropylene with specific physical and mechanical properties is carried out by the accurate dosing of organic as well as inorganic additives. The result of the procedure is a novel product group "Seculene PP", a registered trademark of BSB Recycling GrnbH.

Magnesia-based refractory is generally used in an electric arc furnace (EAF) due to its relatively high corrosion resistance and strength at high temperatures. However, the magnesia refractory is attacked by EAF slag and thus the lining life continuously decreases. Thus, it is significant to identify the interfacial reaction between magnesia refractory and FeO-rich EAF slags. In the present study, the influence of FeO-rich slag on the corrosion behavior of MgO refractory was evaluated. The (Fe,Mg)Oss layer was observed at the slag-refractory interface and its thickness increased with increasing content of FeO in the slag. The specific reaction phenomena and formation behavior of (Fe,Mg)Oss layer were evaluated by thermochemical computing program, FactsageTM7.0.

Creating technology, securing patent rights, and managing a patent portfolio are time-sensitive and dynamic activities. Agreements should be in place with technology partners (employees, contractors, joint venture partners), prior to embarking on research and development projects, so as to mitigate future disputes over patent rights. Technology partners should be educated on patent law basics so as to be mindful of patent bar triggering events. Accurate records must be maintained to capture information relevant for preparation and filing of patent application, including subject matter, names of inventors, and invention date. Developed inventions should be evaluated for whether to file for patent protection, delay patenting until technology is further developed, maintain trade secrecy, or effect deliberate public disclosure. Once decision is made to file for patent protection, time is of the essence, and application for patent protection should be filed as soon as possible, as many countries award patents on a "first-to file" basis. Decisions on where to file are made having regard to potential competitive advantages versus cost considerations, and can be delayed by taking advantage of priority rights recognized in patent legislation of most countries. Once patents are granted, competitors must be policed for potential patent infringement, and legal action may be necessary to prevent patent infringement.

Feeding dry sulfide concentrate into smelting furnaces enhances process performance and reduces the energy consumption and exhaust gas flow. Direct heated rotary dryers and flash dryers have being replaced by rotary steam dryers featured by very low wear rate of the pipe heating elements and long maintenance interval. Impact of the drying processes on the environment receives more and more attention as the emission legislation tightens. In this regard, environmental factors such as SO2, CO2, dust and gas flow among rotary dryers, flash dryers and steam dryers were compared. Selection of a rotary steam dryer for copper and nickel concentrate drying would be an ideal solution to reduce the pollution of exhaust gas, as drying is achieved by indirect contact to the steam at relatively low drying temperature and as the off-gas contains almost only water vapor and air. The emissions can be significantly reduced and only small and simple off-gas handling units are needed.

Geopolymers are novel engineering materials with the potential to play a highly significant role in the transformation of the construction materials and building products industry in the push towards sustainable development. These materials are formed by activation of industrial aluminosilicate waste materials such as coal ash or blast furnace slag with alkaline solutions. Geopolymers derived from coal ash can exhibit superior mechanical properties and chemical stability when compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The use of waste-based geopolymers can also result in significant (up to 90%) reduction in carbon dioxide emissions when used in cement replacement applications. In addition to the formation of conventional pre-cast products, these high performance mineral binders are ideally suited to use in the encapsulation of mine tailings, immobilization of heavy metals and back-filling of mines due to their chemical stability and resistance to acid attack. A key attribute of geopolymer technology is the robustness and versatility of the manufacturing process; it enables products to be tailor-made from a range of raw material sources (waste and/or virgin) with specific properties for a given application at a competitive cost. Despite these key technical and environmental attributes, it is the ability to add significant value to coal ash or and/ or metallurgical slag waste streams which drives the commercial development and uptake of the technology.

The topic of the industrial applications of mineralogy is a vast field which can be adequately covered only in a large book or by a two or three semester course. This paper recalls experiences of the writer in this field, a task requested by the Process Mineralogy Committee. Therefore, this paper is largely an account of the industrial mineralogy problems I was involved with, since my student years, Although I will treat each application only briefly, it is hoped that they will illustrate to the students in the field how varied are the applications of mineralogical methods. In this respect, I want to emphasize that it is important for mineralogy teachers to point out the usefulness of mineralogical methods much more often in their courses. Not only does that help prepare young individuals for industrial careers, but also it arouses their feeling of consciousness of public responsibility which is an important attribute for the world's scientists. When professors utilize the varied applications in their teaching of mineralogical methods students then understand better the significance of learning those methods and appreciate the many years of necessary university preparation. The first time I was involved in an application of mineralogical methods was about 1944 as a student of Professor Paul Niggli. He was asked to study the problems of ice crystallization on wings of airplanes. The ice formed at high altitudes and during the winter. This was not outside his realm of expertise because he was the main initiator of the Snow Research Institute on the Weissfluhjoch in Switzerland. I believe that the work of this Institute was an important factor in stimulating much of the snow research subsequently carried out at the United States Army Snow Research Center, which was located at that time in Willmette near Chicago. Dr. Bader, one of Paul Niggli's former students, was the Director of Research at Wilmette at that time and for quite a number of years thereafter. A mineralogist-crystallographer can make important contributions to a better understanding of the problems of snow and ice formation, avalanche hazards, and the prevention of hail. Advances in hydrometallurgy promoted by Tecnicas Reunidas are providing increasingly simple and clean means for controlling the entire lead recycling chain. Used in parallel with pyrometallurgy, these processes allow furnace temperatures to be reduced and fumes and atmospheric pollution to be minimised. Furnace slags are digested, and residues (mainly gypsum) are non-toxic and convertible into marketable products. In addition, the global economy of the process is substantially improved by reducing the operating cost, increasing the lead recovery above 99% and obtaining a 99.99% pure lead product. These new PLACID and PLINT processes may provide the cleanest and healthiest practicable means for recycling lead from batteries.

"Water quenching is one of common heat treatment processes but with complex physical phenomenon, in which vaporizing, bubbling and convection are involved. The general simulation of liquid quenching processes is conducted by using temperature dependent value of heat transfer coefficient (HTC) obtained from experimental measurement under a strong assumption. A preliminary multiphase flow model developed by using Ansys-CFX for water quenching has been presented in this paper, which shows a distributed HTC with a time dependent feature. The conjugate heat transfer is used to describe thermal conduction in the simplified workpiece, and generation, growth and flow of bubbles are modeled by using Eulerian-Eulerian method for the gas-liquid multiphase flow. The simulation result shows the intense variation of heat exchange through the interface between workpiece and liquid, and the unsteady distribution around the solid surface.IntroductionQuenching is a rapid cooling process which makes the desired solid phase transformations happen for the certain material properties. For aluminum alloy, rapid quenching will prevent all phase transformation and generate a supersaturated single phase."

To solve the environmental and financial problems of the traditional Rotary Salt Furnace process, a new salt-free method for aluminum dross and scrap melting, ALUREC, has been developed by AGA and its partners, Hoogovens Aluminium and MAN GHH. AGA and Hoogovens Aluminium developed the main process concept and jointly carried out trials on pilot plant scale. Owing to excellent results" the partners decided to jointly erect a commercial scale test plant. The order for the design and erection of the furnace went to MAN GHH. The three companies designed the test plant and began operation in the spring of 1994. The results have been excellent and the process is expected to be a technical and commercial success.

"Elkem has developed a process that utilizes SPL as a raw material for pig iron production. This process will be demonstrated in industrial scale during 2008 and 2009. The process developed produce iron, and the reduction material used, is the carbon present in the SPL. The iron source could be either virgin iron ore or waste/recycled material from the steel industry. The SPLrefractory and bath material is dissolved in the slag produced. The slag is designed so that any leaching of environmentally dangerous elements is minimized. This process can in addition to SPL, consume other types of waste derived from the primary production of aluminium. Elkem intends to supply this demo project with SPL and other waste products from external sources, domestic as well as international ones.IntroductionSpent Pot Lining (SPL) is generated when an electrolytic cell for producing aluminium is taken out of service and the refractory and carbon lining is removed from the steel potshell.The yearly generation of SPL world wide is exceeding 500 000 tonnes. The major amount of this quantity is stockpiled or land filled, unprocessed.SPL contain large amount of water soluble fluorides and some amount of cyanides and is classified as hazardous waste in most countries."

"Human society evolved from an agricultural to industrial and, subsequently, to a service society. As the resource requirements for each stage of this development differ, trends of metal and energy consumption are related to shifts in society. The increase pattern of supplemental energy is similar to that of mineral production throughout the world. Low positive and stable long-term increasing occurred before 1950, whereas they increased quickly after 1950, especially between 1950 and 1973. A substantial decline in· the growth of energy and mineral production began in 1973 and lasted until the early 1980s. Production of energy resources has recently begun to increase again at a high growth rate in the world. Observing the consumption trends of energy and key metals, it is clarified that increasing patterns can be thought in three stages.IntroductionHuman society evolved from an agricultural to industrial and, subsequently, to a service society. As the resource requirements for each stage of this development differ, trends of metal and energy consumption are related to shifts in society [1-3]. Humphreys [4] described that both the non-ferrous metal consumption and the construction material consumption showed a similar trend dropping markedly in the UK over the period 1960-1992. On the other hand, per GDP (Gross Domestic Product) consumption, that is, the intensity of use of construction materials has declined sharply over the past 30 years, more so than the intensity of metal use in the USA [5]. Nishiyama [6] observed that increase pattern of supplemental energy is similar to that of mineral production throughout the world."
