As part of a systematic study on the thermodynamic properties of complex nitrides, phase equilibria of the system Li-M-N (M Mg, AI, Ga) at 900 K were investigated. An attempt to determine the thermodynamic properties of complex nitrides was made by using the galvanic cell method, which utilizes LiMgN as an electrolyte under nitrogen atmosphere. The electromotive force (Emf) of the cell at temperatures between 800 and 1100 K was measured. While the Emf of the cell at 900 K was measured to be 0.137 V, data discrepancies of ±0.03 V were found. It was difficult to determine temperature dependence of the Emf. The Gibbs energy change for the reaction, 113 Li3N (s) + 1/3 Mg3N2 (s) = LiMgN (s), at 900 K was determined to be !'J.Go, (LiMgN) = -13.2 (±2.9) kJ/mol. Using thermodynamic information on the binary nitride from literature, the standard Gibbs energy of LiMgN was derived to be !'J.Go f (LiMgN)= - 121 kJ at 900 K. The thermodynamic stability range of nitride was discussed by constructing isothermal chemical potential diagrams that provide a better understanding of the stability region of the LiMgN phase. The diagram was found to be in good agreement with the isothermal phase diagram determined by the alloy equilibration method. Although the obtained data includes large uncertainties, the results provide a better understanding of the thermodynamic stability of nitrides. The potential application of this complex nitride to nitrogen chemical sensors or a medium for controlling nitrogen potential is also shown.

Recycling of solid wastes, a common practice nowadays, requires the separation of the different materials in order to increase the products added value. The separation of one plastic from mixtures of different types of plastics is not easy due to their similar physical properties, but different techniques are available, from automatic sorting systems based on optical sensors to techniques adapted from mineral processing, namely gravity, froth flotation and electrostatic processes. In the last decade, many researchers have addressed the separation?s problem of different polymers, like Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), two polymers commonly used in packaging which have similar density. One proposed technique is the classical froth flotation performed in agitated cells. Froth flotation is a versatile and relatively cheap process widely used in mineral separation. It is based on the different behaviour of particles in the presence of an inter-phase air-water, which depends on the materials surfaces properties. Froth flotation can be affected by some variables such as impeller speed and air flow rate. Agitated cells, when used with low density materials, like plastics, can produce overstated turbulence that prevents the adhesion and collection of particles in the froths. In this case, separation is favoured by column flotation smoother hydrodynamics. This paper proposes the separation of PET from PVC by column flotation. The experimental work was carried out in a column of 9cm diameter and 1m high. The effects of some operating conditions, such as depressor and frother concentration, air flow rate and feed grain size on products grade and recovery were evaluated and the best flotation conditions for the separation of these plastics were established.

"The effects of oxalic acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate and particle size on the dissolution rate of synthetically prepared calcium molybdate were investigated. Dissolution of calcium molybdate in oxalic acid solutions takes place as a series - parallel type reaction. In the first reaction step, which proceeds according to the ""Langmuir - Hinshelwood Mechanism"", calcium aqua oxalato molybdate is formed as a complex chelate intermediate product. In the second reaction step, molybdic acid is formed during the slow hydrolysis of calcium aqua oxalato molybdate, and it reacts rapidly with oxalic acid to form the polymeric hydrogen oxalate dimolybdate chelate as an end product. Activation energies were calculated as 41.4 and 49.9 kJ mol-1 for the first and zero order reactions. The fractional conversion versus time relationship can be given by the following equation.IntroductionMolybdenum is used widely in electric-electronic, metal working, aerospace and aeronautic, nuclear, glass and petrochemical industries because of its high melting temperature and resistance against chemical effects. However, the largest molybdenum consumers are the iron-steel and super alloy industries where molybdenum is used as an alloying element. Industrially important molybdenum minerals are limited to molybdenite (M0S2), powellite (CaMo04) and wulfenite (PbMo04), which are considered as primary molybdenum resources. Secondary molybdenum resources are spent catalysts and scrap [1-4].Molybdenum has been produced by pyrometallurgical processes in the past. Since it is possible to process low grade molybdenum ores and industrial wastes by hydrometallurgical processes, which are more environmentally friendly than pyrometallurgical processes, the importance of the use of hydrometallurgical processes has increased in the molybdenum production industry."

"To clarify the feasibility of alkoxides and acetylacetonates as precursors for laser CVD of metal oxides, vapors of tantalum or titanium alkoxides and zirconium acetylacetonate were irradiated by KrF excimer laser and deposits were characterized by XRD and XPS measurements. As for tantalum and titanium, non-stoichiometric crystalline oxides grew nearly phototropically, however, zirconium oxides deposited showed only halo-pattern by XRD measurements. Electric conductivity measurements of tantalum oxides implied the improvement of the insulating properties by the addition of activated oxygen to the ambient.IntroductionThere has been renewed increasing attention to the metallic oxide thin films because ofits promising usefulness in many applications, such as high-Tc superconductors and ferroelectric devices. A variety of thin film preparation techniques have been studied such as sputtering, chemical liquid deposition (sol-gel and metalorganic decomposition), pulsed laser deposition and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Among them, we think CVD is the most promising method because it offers a high controllability of morphology and good step coverage at relatively high growth rate. Preparation of oxide films by CVD can be achieved using a precursor containing metallic element and oxygen containing gas such as N20 at the same time. However, metalorganic (MO) compounds which contain both metallic element and oxygen, directly bonded to metallic element, seems to be more favorable because some of MO has a good properties for CVD such as a rather high vapor pressure, stability in ambient and low toxicity."

Despite being crucial for the smelting process, furnace tapping using oxygen lances has not been considered an operation that brings value. Therefore, these important tools have not seen a significant change in over 100 years. Problems related to the use of oxygen lances include: • Inaccurate tool: causing damages shortening the life of the taphole refractories. • Safety: extended exposure to the operator in an unsafe area of the furnace. • Cost: high oxygen consumption & high lance consumption. • Time consuming and frustrating to connect one lance to another. This paper will suggest a very good solution; new concept thermal lances. We will show how these provide an outstanding performance for a more efficient, faster and cost-effective furnace tapping operation. These new lances are very accurate tools that enable the operator to perform a more controlled operation; resulting in longer taphole life, fewer repairs and less down-time.

Concentrated solar energy can be used as heat source for the production of metals. One of the most promising respective processes, the solar carbothermic production of Zn from ZnO, is investigated within the European research project SOLZINC, a cooperation of institutes and industries from France, Germany, Israel, Sweden and Switzerland. The solar produced Zn can be used as commodity or as an energy carrier for further processing on demand to electricity in Zn-air fuel cells/batteries or to generate hydrogen by reaction with steam. In both cases the Zn is oxidized to form ZnO, which can be recycled back to the solar plant. In these cyclic processes Zn acts as a means to store and eventually transport solar energy. Second product of the solar process step is a CO-rich offgas, which may e.g. drive a gas engine or may be shifted to hydrogen in a conventional reaction with steam. A pilot plant using 300kW concentrated solar power input has been constructed and operated successfully. 86mass-% of ZnO mixed with 14mass-% of charcoal are reacted to produce Zn and CO at a temperature of about 1200°C, yielding about 50 kg gaseous Zn per hour. Zn-dust with 95% purity is recovered from the offgas system that was designed to produce Zn for Zn-air fuel cells. Based on the results and findings from the pilot plant, a two tons Zn/h solar demonstration plant has been designed conceptually. Cost studies have been performed and scenarios for producing electricity or H2 via these ZnO/Zn-cyclic processes are evaluated.

"Halide salt has been tested as a reductant for producing titanium powder directly from TiCl4. From the results of thermodynamic investigation for several rare earth chloride systems, DyCl2 was found to be used for the reduction of TiCl4 instead of the conventional metallic reductant. When TiCl4 was fed into molten salts containing DyCl2 at 1073K, titanium powder of several ten micron meters in diameter was obtained. In contrast to the sponge titanium produced by the conventional Kroll process, the present new process using a halidothermic reduction in a reactive molten salt appears to be suitable for producing metal powder. From the thermodynamic point of view, the resultant DyCl3 can be reduced to DyCl2 by magnesium. By utilizing the multivalent halide redox couple, some possible ways of titanium powder production directly from TiCl4 by magnesiothermic reduction are shown to be feasible. This can also be applied to the development of a new continuous titanium reduction process.1 IntroductionTitanium and its alloys show attractive mechanical properties such as strength-to-weight, rigidity-to-weight ratios and excellent corrosion resistance. Nevertheless, the application of titanium alloys is limited compared to other structural materials (e.g. steels, aluminum alloys) because of its high cost of production. Currently, almost all of titanium is produced by metallothermic reduction of TiCl4 by magnesium (Kroll process)[1] in an airtight metallic reactor. This process is batch type and labor intensive. Therefore, many attempts to develop new process for producing titanium are investigated so far."

"In China, hazardous e-waste—cathode ray tube (CRT) glass is usually left around, and it is likely to contact with water resources directly. To identify the real leaching characteristics and bioavailabilities of heavy metals Pb and Ba contained in CRT glass in the nature environment, experiments were carried out by simulating the nature environment. The results indicated that Pb and Ba contained in CRT glass were stable in most conditions, which only showed obvious leaching toxicities in strong acidic/alkali conditions. EDTA and DTPA extractable Pb and Ba amounts were extremely high, e.g., EDTA extractable Pb of color funnel glass was up to 1960.07 ìg/kg, indicating that the potential bioavailability of waste CRT glass is very high. IntroductionIn recent years, cathode ray tube (CRT) contained monitors or TV sets has been substituted by novel and better electronic and electric equipments such as LCD and PDP, leaving huge amounts of end-of-life CRTs. 50~85% of the total weight of a computer monitor or a TV set is glass'1-21, which was classified to three categories: black & white glass (BW), color panel glass (CP) and color funnel glass (CF), according to their chemical compositions'3' (Méar et ai, 2006). In order to provide shielding from X-rays generated during the picture projection process, lead, barium and strontium oxides were used in the glass. In general, a color CRT contains 1.6-3.2 kg of lead'4'. Concerning the high toxicity of lead, these waste glasses have posed a potential risk to the environment and human health and researches on these glasses have been attracting wide and tense attention currently."

"A new atomization process is developed. The principle of this process is completely different from that of conventional processes. This process uses electromagnetic energy induced by direct electric current and direct magnetic field instead of kinetic energy produced by fluid impingement or disk rotation.Experimental work of this process was carried out using pure tin, and it was found that the crucial factor for a stable operation is the contact state of molten metal with the electrode. In order to control the condition, a delay time controlling unit was developed and combined with this process. It is noticed that this controller works well to produce uniformly sized particles.A linear relation between the impulse and the momentum of atomized particles is found by use of experimental data and is explained by theoretical analysis.IntroductionIn atomization processes prevailing in metal powder technology, kinetic energy is currently employed for atomizing molten metal. That is, molten metal is broken into small particles by other fluid (e.g. water, argon gas, etc) or by impinged upon a rotating solid disk. This splashing process is always accompanied with uncertain factors for shape and size of the particles. The diameter distribution of products, therefore, comparatively spreads over a wide range. From another standpoint, the restriction of atmosphere is inevitable in some of these processes. As a pulverizing technology, the process which can produce uniformly sized particles and permits the choice of atmosphere is strongly desired.On the other hand, a great attention has been paid to the spray casting process as a new near net shape casting. In this process, a small size spraying device is favorable."

"By testing the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss factor of concentrated Dahongshan, mill scale, anthracite and light-burned dolomite in different frequency and temperature, and by studying the temperature-rising characteristics of the materials in the microwave field of 2.45GHz in frequency, the research in the paper shows that to reach at 1250°C under the same condition -2KW the microwave power and 30g the mass --the time concentrated Dahongshan takes is 330s, whereas the millscale is 855s and the anthracite is 820s. About the last one, the higher the temperature is, the stronger the absorptivity is. After the temperature has rose to 400°C, the anthracite's absorptivity increases dramatically. The result of the research would serve as the foundation of the further study on making direct reduced iron by microwave heating.1. IntroductionUnder the microwave fields, materials' dissipation of dielectric bodies would generate thermal effect. Therefore, the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss factor are closely related to materials' ability of absorbing microwave energy-the larger the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss factor are, the stronger the material's ability of absorbing microwave energy is, and the better the thermal effect would be[1-2]. In order to research how to make reduced iron from iron ore fines by microwave heating deeply and systematically, the test of raw materials' dielectric constants and dielectric loss factors are of the essence. What's more, because a mineral' conductivity is influenced by its components and crystal structure[3], it is necessary to study different materials' different temperature-rising characteristics; hence such studies would provide theoretical foundation of further research."

Outokumpu has applied its well -known copper Fl ash Smelling Process also for smelting su1phide lead . concentrates. The lead in the Flash Smelting Furnace slag is recovered by reducing the oxygen potential of the slag in an electric furnace by injecting reductant into the slag bath. A series of tests have been carried out in a 1000 KVA electric furnace? adjacent to a pilot Flash Smelting Furnace. The furnace has been fed continuously with molten Flash Furnace Slag. The feed rate has varied from 0.5 to 3.1 MTPH (0.55 - 3..4 STPH) depending on the feed rate and the quality of concentrate to the Flash Smelting Furnace. The inlet slag contained 15 to 40% of lead and the cleaned slag 1. 5 to 3. 0%. The lead recovery from sol id raw material was tested in the same continuous process by feeding lead calcine into the furnace. Feed rate was 0.7 to 0.95 MTPH (0.8 - 1.05 STPH) and the calcine contained 33 to 34% of Pb. Several reduction agents and procedures were tested. The process proved to be suitable for continuous recovery of lead from solid oxide raw materials.

Keywords: Solvent extraction, nickel, electroless plating, accelerating effect With the increasing importance of electroless nickel plating technology in many fields such as the electronic and automobile industries, the treatment of spent baths is becoming a serious problem. Although the spent baths are currently treated by a conventional precipitation method, a method with no sludge generation is desired. Previously, we proposed the solvent extraction recovery of nickel from the spent baths by means of solvent extraction using LIX84I as the extractant. However, a problem of this method was that the extraction and stripping of nickel were not fast enough to achieve high efficiencies when the continuous extractor was used. We have overcome this difficulty by finding that the addition of an acidic organophosphorous reagent in small amount into the organic phase markedly promotes the extraction and stripping rates of the nickel. Shaking-out tests using a separatory funnel at 240 spm revealed that the time to reach the equilibria is more than 60 min with only 20 vol% LIX84I, but is reduced to 10 min and 2.5 min by adding 2 vol% DP8R, respectively, during the extraction and the stripping with sulfuric acid.

The so-called "fayalite" slag, despite problems associated with it, is the most widely used slag in copper smelting processes. Thirty years ago, in order to overcomes some drawbacks of this slag a new "calcium ferrite" slag was proposed especially for continuous copper converting. Since both slags have strong and weak points depending on the field of their application about 8 years ago another new "ferrous calcium silicate" slag was proposed that is expected to solve the drawbacks of each slag. This new slag is defined as mainly consisting of FeOx, CaO and SiO2 as its main components but it can practically have several combinations of these constituents. In order to determine the best area of this slag for possible industrial application the quantification of phase relations is an important subject. In this paper the work carried out by the authors in quantifying through an original physical model the phase relations, liquidus surface, liquidus regions, behavior of solid phases and the effect of minor components is reviewed. Several special compositions of this slag have been identified and discussed for possible applications in the industrial practice.

Mantoverde is a heap leach-SX-EW plant that was commissioned in December 1995 at a production rate of 42,130 ton of copper per year and 5.4 million ton of ore per year. Copper production has steadily been increased to 57,290 ton in 2002. Forecast copper production for 2003 is 60,000 ton for an ore treatment rate of 8.5 million ton. Several improvements in the heap leach process have been implemented. The main process improvements are related to the optimization of heap height, particle size, irrigation rate and leach cycle, in addition to a better heap drainage design and a solution management system. A first dump leach operation was started in 1999 at a production rate of 1,922 ton of copper. A second dump leach operation was started in early 2002 at a production rate of 2,805 ton of copper. Dump leach production will be increased over time to as much as 24,000 ton of copper. The main heap leach process improvements, as compared to the original plant design, as well as the main dump leach operating parameters are discussed in this paper.

The Singhbhum Copper Belt located in the state of Bihar in Eastern India bears evidence of ancient workings and indicates the existence of a civilized habitation in this region in the past. It was in 1833. how- ever, that the first official announcement of the occurrence of copper in the district was made. Although the occurrence was confirmed in 1847, it was not until 1857 that the first company was formed to exploit the deposits. This Company was dissolved in 1859 and from then until 1920, there were many unsuccessful attempts to develop and exploit the copper deposits in the Singhbhum area. In 1920. the Cordoba Copper Co. took an option on the Mosaboni area, which is nearly 10 km away from the present works located at Moubhandar, Ghatsila and exercising the option in 1924, purchased the mining rights from the Cape Copper Company. The Cordoba Copper Co. was then converted into Indian Copper Corporation Ltd. This was subsequently taken over by the Government of India in March 1972 and is now known as Indian Copper Complex (ICC), forming one of the two smelting units of Hindustan Copper Ltd.

The distribution behavior of Pb between molten copper and FetO-SiO2 (-CaO, Al2O3) slags was investigated at 1473 K (1200 oC) and p(O2)=10-10 atm in view of the reaction mechanism of Pb dissolution into the slag. The distribution ratio of Pb (LPb) decreases with increasing CaO content (~6 mass pct) irrespective of Fe/SiO2 ratio (1.4~1.7). However, the addition of alumina into a slag with Fe/SiO2=1.5 linearly decreases the LPb, whereas a minimum value is observed at about 4 mass pct Al2O3 at Fe/SiO2=1.3. The log LPb continuously decreases with increasing Fe/SiO2 ratio, and the addition of Al2O3 (5 to 15 mass pct) into the silica-saturated iron silicate slag (Fe/SiO2 < 1.0) yields the highest Pb distribution ratio. The log LPb linearly decreases by increasing the log (Fe3+/Fe2+) value. The Pb distribution ratio increases and the excess free energy of PbO decreases with increasing Cu2O content in the slag. However, from the viewpoint of copper loss into the slag, the silica-saturated system containing small amounts of alumina is strongly recommended to stabilize PbO in the slag phase at a low Cu2O content.

Mercury is one of the most undesirable contaminants in gold bearing ores. During cyanidation mercury cyanide compounds accompany gold in all the extraction and recovery processes. Of course mercury in the carbon eluates creates environmental problems in subsequent refining steps. One possible process alternative for the separation of gold from mercury in such concentrated alkaline cyanide solutions is the selective solvent extraction of gold by undiluted Dibutyl Butyl Phosphonate (DBBP). In order to describe the behavior of mercury during extraction by DBBP, the results from a preliminary research program are presented. In this study, temperature and cyanide concentration have been found to be the most significant variables which influence the separation of gold from mercury by solvent extraction using DBBP. It was found, using plant eluate from a carbon strip, that excellent separation of gold from mercury can be obtained at 60&apos; C with 98% gold recovery and complete mercury rejection in a single stage of extraction. The influence of pH is also discussed in terms of the extraction chemistry. These results complement previous research which described the DBBP solvation extraction of an aurocyanide ion pair. In addition, these results extend our understanding of the alkyl phosphorous ester extraction systems by illustrating that neutral ionic species such as Hg(cN)02sq, can be extracted at low cyanide concentrations, a phenomenon which had not been observed previously for other cyanoanions.

Chromium containing slags from stainless steelmaking may eventually be leached by acidic environments, therefore they should be treated before being stockpiled or land filled. In this work, synthetic slags were prepared and the effect of CaO/SiO2, Cr2O3, MgO and Al2O3 contents on the stability of the mineralogical species formed was analyzed. The morphology and composition of the slags were analyzed by XRD and SEM-EDS, whilst their chemical stability was evaluated by leaching with an aqueous acetic acid solution. It was found that CaCr2O4 and CaCrO4 are present in slags prepared with neither MgO nor Al2O3. The Al2O3-based slags mainly produced Ca2Al2SiO7 and the Cr(VI)-containing oxide complex Ca4Al6CrO16, whilst MgO-based slags produced MgCr2O4 as main mineralogical species. Additionally, Eh-pH diagrams for the Ca-Cr-H2O and Mg-Cr-H2O systems at 25 °C were constructed. The lowest Cr concentration levels in the leaching liquors corresponded to MgO-based slags owing to the stable binding of Cr in spinel with MgO. It was also observed in the Al2O3-based slags that increasing the slag basicity from 1 to 2 the leachability of the slags are notably increased.
