In this paper, the results of a research study on airborne dust transport in a full scale simulated longwall face are presented. The simulated longwall face was set up in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. The controlled parameters in the experiments were the dust dispersion rate, dust size distribution, density of the dust, air velocity, and the rate of travel of the dust generating source. The analyses of the experimental results on mass concentrations, particle size distributions, and real-time respirable dust concentrations are discussed. There are definite spatio-temporal trends between the location of the shearer, the concentration at any location in the face, and the dust generation rates. The size-consist and density characteristics of the source dust, the air velocity in the face, and the air leakage into the gobs all affect the concentration.

The effects of artificial weathering on the mechanical properties of the Loyalhanna sandstone have been investigated. Weathering was simulated in the laboratory by subjecting cylin- drical specimens of rock to alternate cycles of wetting and drying (in distilled water at 2O0C 2 5OC and in an electric oven at 105OC t 1°C, respectively). The total number of cycles was 100 and the geomechanical characteristics of the altered material were determined through uniaxial compressive and indirect tensile ("Brazilian") tests, with the determination of axial and trans- verse strains and monitoring of acoustic emission activity (rate and total event count). Moisture content and weight loss data were collected after each cycle and the mechanical parameters (unconfined strength, indirect tensile strength, young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, permanent set and AE/MS activity) were determined for unweathered specimens and after 10, 20, 50 and 100 cycles of wetting and drying. Hypotheses for the effect of weathering on the geomechanical properties of the Loyalhanna sandstone are proposed as reinforced by petrographic analyses carried out for the different stages of artificial weathering. A methodology for assessing the degree of physical weathering of rocks is proposed based on the number of wetting and drying cycles.

Although recent advances have significantly improved our understanding of flotation fundamentals, disturbance variables combine to make it difficult to maintain steady state operating conditions over either the short or long term. One of the major concerns relates to knowing how much reagent to add to the flotation system, how to monitor the addition rate, and how to determine when to adjust the reagent addition rate in the presence of these disturbances. This paper will look at the development and installation of process control systems that address these issues. The economic benefits that accrued from the implementation of these strategies is described.

Oriented borehole data provide the means to characterize a rock mass. In this paper, the geomechanical caving potential of a hard rock mine project is investigated. In particular, the influence of random joints to the resulting block size distributions is addressed. The implications of this approach in preliminary investigations on the choice of mining methods are discussed with reference to one site.

Processing of the refractory precious metal ore from the Sunshine Mine is done in a fully integrated hydrometallurgical facility. This operating philosophy began with the construction of an antimony plant during World War 11, and it continued with the construction of a silver-copper refinery in 1984. The antimony plant relies on an alkaline sulfide ambient pressure leach combined with antimony electrowinning and antimony compound production. This plant is the largest producer of antimony metal in the United States. The one-of-a-kind silver- copper refinery uses a nitrogen species catalyzed sulfuric acid pressure leach system. The plant contains innovative downstream silver recovery processes as well as copper solvent extraction and electrowinning. This paper presents the pertinent process chemistries and flow sheets for the two unique hydrometallurgical processing plants.

"From 1998-2002 the world's leading mining and metals companies developed the Global Mining Initiative (GMI) to understand their industry's role in the transition to sustainable development and to ensure its long-term contribution to sustainable development (SD). Since then, the industry has come a long way: For example, operational safety and health have improved significantly, environmental management systems and impact assessments have become the norm, community relations have been established, many mining companies report annually on their contributions to SD and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has taken on the recommendations of the GMI as an industry association. However, since the GMI the concept of sustainable development has been evolving from a rather generic and loose definition (“weak sustainability”), to an absolute and strict definition of sustainability, based on the boundaries of our planet (“strong sustainability”). Similarly, other concepts such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) have evolved and even deviated from their initial intentions. This paper presents results from a literature review looking at how far this transition has moved from a scientific debate towards becoming mainstream. Furthermore, it explores, by using qualitative comparison analysis, if the current efforts of the large mining companies are still sufficient or if the industry is again at risk of falling behind societal expectations and hence should once again come together - for a GMI 2.0 - in order to update its approach. We conclude that the mining industry, whilst in a “weak sustainability” position and behind the peer group on climate change and natural capital considerations, is aligned with current societal expectations, expressed through the Sustainable Development Goals, and therefore there is no need for a GMI 2.0 at present."

The work reported herein compares the support characteristics of two different types of roof truss subjected to the same force in the horizontal tension member. The major differences between the two trusses are in the sequence of tensioning the horizontal and inclined members and in the design of the loading brackets. A photoelastic model was used to compare stresses at points along the roof of the mine opening and at the junction of the roof surface and the rib. The effects of simulated subsidence on stress in the roof and on tension in the horizontal member were analyzed. Results indicate that there are significant differences in the overall support characteristics of the two trusses. Conclusions are drawn relative to which type of roof truss provides the most favorable support if the horizontal members are tensioned equally.

Our portion of this afternoon’s session is dedicated to the operation of automatic process control associated with small to medium size primary or SAG milling circuits. In recognition of the subject matter of this symposium, specifically precious metals, our historical reference is Rosario Dominicanna in the Dominican Republic, one of the largest gold producers in the Western Hemisphere. Plus a backward glance to review very briefly the initial performance of the big primary mills at Island Copper in British Columbia and Pima IV in Arizona. We will then get to the subject at hand with a discussion of a retrofit control logic recently installed on a 5000 hp primary mill. The focus of this review is the simple, inexpensive, and cost effective character of this retrofit installation.

Much has been published lately about the application of advanced control strategies in the automatic control of autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits. The application of adaptive control algorithms, self-tuning controllers, state estimation, and expert systems has been well documented. While these approaches can be very effective; experience has shown that quite often simply "fixing the fundamentals" can have a significant positive impact on overall grinding circuit performance. This paper will highlight the results of process optimization and process control work by the authors at a variety of autogenous and semi-autogenous installations. A review of one approach for quantifying the mill load/bearing pressure/power relationship is provided. Accurate monitoring of key mill process variables is a necessary prerequisite for both effective process analysis and process control. This paper discusses some of the concerns related to defining steady state operating conditions and the issues related to signal conditioning. The paper concludes with a discussion of an effective application of algorithmic constraint control which incorporates many of these considerations.

Ore was first discovered at the Kidd Creek mine site during the first few days of December 1963 when a diamond drill hole there cut sulfide mineralization. This event marked the end of the search started 11 years earlier with the conception of a geological idea. Economic forces provided the stimulus needed for the application of this idea but other-events, and legal considerations, also played arole in delaying the ultimate discovery. The location of Kidd Creek is shown in Fig. 1. Management of the then Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. had become concerned in 1951 at the company's declining reserves of native sulfur in Texas. This problem was to be alleviated by new discoveries and development of methods to recover sulfur from sour gas. At the time, however, the solution appeared to lie in the recovery of sulfur from pyritic ores. Canada was chosen as the best country in which to find these ores. Walter Holyk was hired in 1951 to conduct the search. By 1952, he was working in the area near Sherbrooke, Quebec, known as the "Eastern Townships" where mineralization consisting of base metal sulfides in volcanic rocks has long been known. His observations here led him to the then revolutionary conclusion that such mineralization could have formed as part of the volcanic process and not, as was generally supposed at the time, by replacement. On learning of the discovery of similar mineralization near Bathurst, NB, he moved there in the spring of 1953. He was able to utilize his new concept and found the Half-Mile Lake sulfide deposit.

"An ore is a rock regardless of its rarity or value."* The application of geology does not cease with the discovery and delineation of a mineral resource, but continues in the calculation of the economic parameters that determine reserves. Reserve determination, reduced to essentials, is the determination of the cost of production of a mineral commodity from a resource. This cost comprises mining, processing, waste disposal, reclamation and marketing costs. Geological input is vital in the calculation of the individual cost parameters from mining to reclamation, and even has some impact on marketing. Geology thus has a critical role in the determination of reserves.

The material known as coal has a highly variable composition. As a consequence, coals show a great variation in their physical and chemical properties as a function of coal rank. The situation is further complicated because the preparation engineer must deal with raw coal, as mined. This is an assemblage of coal, upwards of 30% mineral matter and, typically, several percent pyrite. The kind and amount of the mineral constituents is also highly variable from source to source. A knowledge of coal rank and source location, and the kind and amount of associated impurities, is the first step in evaluating the response of a raw coal to preparation procedures. The raw coal must first be characterized before information from one source can be extrapolated to that of another.

The results of an experimental study of polymer-induced flocculation of clay suspensions in continuous, stirred-tank reactors are presented. The effects of polymer dosage, mixing time and mixing intensity are shown to be generally similar to those observed for equivalent batch systems, but flocculation appears to be generally less effective in the continuous process. Settling rates are lower and supernatant turbidities are higher for the continuous system. It is postulated that non-equilibrium effects due to simultaneous polymer adsorption and floc growth can be exploited so as to enhance flocculation in batch systems. The nature of the continuous process, however, offers less opportunity for taking advantage of such effects. Conditions in a continuous flocculation system inherently lead to a closer approach to equilibrium.

Ore blending for process optimization is becoming an increasing factor for managing cost and productivity. Economic mining and processing a very low value ore in an extremely competitive market results in constant cost-cummng initiatives. The inherent conflict between the lowest possible mining cost and the lowest possible milling cost is reviewed here in the context of blasting for autogenous mills. Iron ore blending focuses on a number of properties-liberation values, weight recovery and concentrate silica being the most important. Other chemical and metallurgical factors are also commonly controlled. Recent research has fueled an emerging interest in blending on physical ore properties as well. Fully autogenous mills rely on the large, competent fraction of crushed feed to act as grinding media. Previous test work indicated that Hibtac mills require specific amounts of 6- to 10-inch ore. High recirculating loads require a steady influx of large rock fragments. Blast designs, therefore, are presently characterized by wide patterns and low powder factors. Current efforts are aimed at improving mill throughput while reducing overall energy costs. Based on research and published case studies and the advent of optical measuring devices, Hibbing Taconite Company has embarked on a blast optimization program to identify optimum mill feed and to design blast fragmentation goals for each geological unit and each mining area. This paper outlines the preliminary findings of an ongoing, broad-based team effort which requires close cooperation of geologists, mine engineers, crushing and milling personnel. Three specific areas of investigation are reviewed: I) Historical relationships between powder factor and mill performance, 2) Blast fragmentation modeling using the Kuz-Ram model, and 3) Drill

With the advent of faster micro-processors, the use of numerical methods to simulate complex fluid dynamic phenomena in three dimensions for use in design has become prevalent in the automotive, and turbo-machinery industries. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method divides the region of interest into small control volumes which form the mesh representing the physical characteristics of the problem, and uses the finite volume method to intergrate the equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species over each control volume. Recent developments in CFD software expedite mesh generation, and enable the use of unstructured grids, comprised of tetrahedral volumes in three dimensions and triangular areas in two. CFD more accurately represents complex geometries and allows for relative movement of meshes enabling simulation of multiple moving bodies. 'ibis paper presents two examples of how CFD simulation can be used to assess mine and tunnel ventilation problems formerly addressed by application of analytical solutions which were developed assuming ideal incompressible conditions. CFD simulation is used to evaluate the impact of varying the airflow in a descentionally ventilated airway on the layering along the roof of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire. Control of the smoke layer is required to enable safe egress from the vehicle, particularly if the vehicle is for personnel transport, and to ensure control of the fire contaminants throughout the ventilation system. The airflow required to prevent layering against the ventilation direction, calculated from the Bakke and Leach relations (Bakke and Leach, 1962), is compared with the CFD simulation results. An evaluation of the pressures, generated as a vehicle enters a tunnel portal, using CFD simulation, is also presented for unflared and flared portal configurations. These simulation results are compared with predictions derived using an analytical method which assumes one-dimensional and incompressible flow. Results of the CFD simulation are presented in an animated video format. SIMULATION OF BACKLAYERING In designing a ventilation system for a transit tunnel, the ability of the ventilating air to control and prevent backlayering of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire is of prime concern. The buoyant nature of hot smoke causes it to rise relative to the colder, fresh air provided by the ventilation system. If the vehicle fire occurs in a descentionally ventilated tunnel, the smoke may tend to move upgrade in a layer above the incoming ventilation airflow. The layer may become thick enough to engulf a substatntial part of the tunnel cross-section upgrade of the incident that comprises the evacuation route. This effect is termed "backlayering' and it is similar to the development of methane layers in mines for which most studies related to backlayering have been done. Prediction Techniques Analytical A number of studies have been conducted (Bakke and Leach, 1962) to define the characteristics of this phenomena and as a result have produced relations which are used both in the mine and transit ventilation fields to define the air velocities required to control layering. In the transit industry the air velocity required to prevent the backlayering phenomena from occuring during a vehicle fire is called the "critical velocity" (Associated Engineers, 1975) and is dependent upon a number of factors: tunnel height, cross-sectional area and grade; ambient air temperature and density; and the heat release rate of the fire. Common practice in transit ventilation design is to provide an airflow which meets or exceeds the critical velocity. In order to determine whether or not the critical velocity can be achieved with a particular ventilation system, a one-dimensional simulation of the tunnel network is typically performed using programs such as the Subway Environment Simulation program (SES) originally developed in the late 1970's (Associated Engineers, 1980). The results obtained from SES are compared to the critical velocity to determine the adequacy of the ventilation system. Computational Fluid Dynamics For the backlayering simulations, a commercial CFD code which has been used successfully in a wide variety of engineering applications, was used. It provides numerous options for modeling laminar and turbulent flows, multiple turbulence models, definition of multiple species and chemical reactions between them, a variety of boundary conditions (including constant pressure and constant velocity inlets) and the ability to apply user-defined FORTRAN subroutines. It includes the ability to model conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. FLUENT also permits the use of "body-fitted coordinates" to match the computational mesh or grid to complex real-world geometries. Computational Fluid Dynamics Model The model developed to simulate the backlayering phenomena is comprised of an airway of rectangular cross-section, 4 meters wide, 4.5 meters high, and 200 meters long. Environmental and cost pressures sparked renewed interest in gravity separation. Industrial sands in Mexico are generally processed by screening, desliming, and flotation. Gravity separation with spirals was evaluated as an alternative to flotation in order to lower operating costs and decrease water pollution. Outstanding operating results are obtained in glass and foundry sand operations, plus a more competitive position for Mexican producers due to lower operating costs. Coal fines, generally recovered by flotation, have the same cost and environmental advantages when processed with spirals.

In the Appalachian region of the United States, approximately 40% of the underground coal reserve base exists in seams 0.7 - 1.1m thick. These seams are, in general, often of premium quality and are frequently accessible through above-drainage drift-type openings. Unfortunately, there are no apparent advantages to mining thin seams, if quality is disregarded. The thin-seam mine is faced with the same legal and economic pressures as any other underground coal mine. But in addition to these common problems, thin-seam operations must also deal with the unique problems associated with mining at such a restrictive height. Small-scale, short-lived operations appear to be the most feasible means of mining these reserves. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the production and safety potential of various thin-seam mining systems. Recommendations will be made regarding present and future thin-seam operations.

This paper discusses grade control of ore mined at Tennessee Copper Company. Mineral zoning and the influence of mineral zoning on production grade are discussed and illustrated. In order to make this most understandable we will first briefly examine the flow sheet at Tennessee Copper to indicate the path followed by the raw material toward its various products. Then we will discuss some of the characteristics of the ore, specifically the distribution or zoning of the minerals in the ore which cause some of the grade control problems. Finally we Will discuss same of the steps that are taken to combat these problems. The flow sheet is illustrated as plate 1. The mined ore is allied to obtain 3 usable products: Copper concentrate, iron concentrate and zinc concentrate. Copper is found in the mineral chalcopyrite, CuFeS2. The Copper concentrate from the mill contains about 20% copper. These concentrates are smelter in reverberatory furnace and Pierce-Smith converter to blister copper containing 99.2% copper. Some metal is cast into 360 lb. pigs and shipped to the refinery. Some is made into shot copper and used locally to make copper sulfate. Copper sulfate is marketed from Copperhill principally in fungicides.
