INTRODUCTION Use of air-cooling or refrigeration equipment in underground mines is needed when conventional ventila¬tion techniques do not maintain acceptable environ¬mental temperatures in working areas. Because refrig¬eration can be very expensive, it should be implemented only after all possible and practical steps have been taken to eliminate or reduce heat sources in the mine. As an example, to prevent the main ventilation fans from contributing heat to mine air, they should be located in the air return and not in the air intake. It is particularly important to prevent any direct contact between hot water and ventilation air, especially in mines which encounter large flows of hot fissure water. Any water hotter than the prevailing wet-bulb temperature of the ambient air must be removed by pipes located as close as possible to the water source. This hot water must not be allowed free contact with the incoming ventilation air at any time during the water's passage out of the mine. Although insulation of the pipes carrying the hot water is seldom necessary, direct contact between the air and the water must be prevented so the warm water cannot evaporate. REVIEW OF COOLING PRACTICES Spot Coolers vs. Centralized Refrigeration To eliminate a few specific hot places in an otherwise cool mine, it is possible to use devices known as "spot coolers." A typical spot cooler that uses chilled water is shown in Fig. 1. These devices consist of self-contained refrigeration units that are often mounted on rail cars for haulage to hot spots. The cooling capacities of such spot coolers usually are limited to about 100 kW or 30 "refrigeration tons." A refrigeration ton represents a cooling rate that produces 1.0 st of ice in 24 hr; that is a cooling rate of 3.517 kW (200 Btu per min). Typically, the electric-power consumption to drive the compressor motor of the refrigeration plant in mines is 1.0 kW per refrigeration ton, corresponding to a coefficient of per¬formance of about 3.5. The principal difference between spot coolers and centralized refrigeration plants is the method of re¬jecting heat from the refrigeration system. Centralized refrigeration plants always discharge heat into the reject or return airflow of the mine; often that is the primary influence in selecting the location for the underground refrigeration plant. Heat from spot coolers usually is rejected into drain water or into air that is not flowing to the location requiring the cooling. As a result, spot coolers remove heat from troublesome hot spots in the mine, injecting that heat-plus the electrical energy used by the cooling unit itself-into other working areas where the ambient conditions are cooler. In effect, this is "robbing Peter to pay Paul." In deep, extensive mines, spot coolers usually pro¬vide only temporary and, over the long term, expensive solutions to localized cooling problems. Centralized re¬frigeration plants are preferred for such mines, with cooling distributed throughout the mine as required. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical underground centralized re¬frigeration plant. Centralized plants lend themselves to improved maintenance at reduced costs while offering the economy of size. Refrigeration plants of larger unit sizes have considerably lower initial costs than smaller unit sizes. The remainder of this chapter is devoted to large refrigeration plants, with no further consideration of spot coolers. Cost of Refrigeration Total Cost: The total cost of refrigeration amounts to about $200/kW of cooling per year (1981 US $). This total cost breaks down into approximately three equal parts: 1) Financial charges, which include the interest and amortization on the capital cost of the initial installation, and the cost of necessary underground excavations. 2) Operating and maintenance costs which include the cost of the electric power to drive the refrigeration plant's compressors. 3) Distribution costs which include costs for pump¬ing, insulated piping, and air-to-water heat exchangers. The local cost of electric power, the number of operating months per year, and the method of refrigera¬tion distribution all contribute to the actual costs in¬curred in a given application. However, the variations usually are limited to no more than ±30% of the $200/ kW per year total cost figure. Cost Per Ton: Refrigeration cost per ton of mineral production can be calculated if the annual production tonnage from the refrigerated section of the mine is known. In most cases, this cost will be less than $1 .00/t. However, in deep mines with high rock temperatures, such as those found in South Africa, the total cost of refrigeration can increase to several dollars per ton of broken rock. The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay field temporarily reduced interest in the development of coal conversion processes, but interest is being re¬newed by the current energy crisis. According to M.A. Wright, Chairman of the Board of Humble Oil and Refining Company(l), the reserve in the Prudhoe Bay bield has been confirmed to be about 10 billion barrels. At first glance this appears to be an extremely large reserve which will eliminate supply problems for the United States for some time. This feeling of security is lost when one realizes that by 1980 the world will consume the reserves of a Prudhoe Bay or a Libya, or Venezuela in less than a year, based on the recent predictions of U.S. and world reserves made by Eastman-Dillon, Union Securities Company(2). Recent forecasts of U.S. demand and source of supply made by Kenneth E. Hill of Eastman-Dillon are shown in Figure 1. This forecast shows a decline in domestic supplies (excluding Alaska) after 1973, with the total domestic supply leveling off in 1975 at about 13 million barrels per day. Since the predicted demand increases from about 14 million barrels per day in 1970 to about 20 million barrels per day in 1980, about 35% of domestic consumption must come from imports or non-conventional sources by 1980. More imminent is the shortage of low sulfur fuel oil which has been created by the new, tough air pollution regulations that are basically legis¬lating eastern coals out of the market. As an alternate to importing large quantities of low sulfur fuel oil or importing and desulfurizing regular fuel oil, one of two domestic solutions is possible: stack gas clean-up or solids fuel pretreatment. Stack gas clean-up may be the cheapest approach for old installations, but fuel pretreatment has real advantages for new installations. Most of us are aware of the relationship between the golden-yellow resin spots on Upper Cretaceous Wasatch Plateau coals and fossil tree resins (?amber?). Nevertheless, confusion remains about the exact chemical composition and structure of commercial coal resin preparations as well as their observed heterogeneity. In order to arrive at a more detailed chemical description we need to distinguish between micropetrographic, organic geochemical and process technological definitions of coal resins, which may include substantial quantities of constituents unrelated to fossil tree resins. New information on composition and origin obtained by Curie-point pyrolysis/evaporation in combination with isobutane chemical ionization mass spectrometry, as presented in this paper, points to the presence of four more or less distinct resin components: (1) a sesquiterpenoid polymer; (2) sesqui-and triterpenoid monomers and dimers; (3) a suite of triterpenoid alcohols, ketones and acids; and (4) a series of increasingly aromatized hydrocarbons with naphthalene and picene type skeletons. Moreover, a strong similarity is found between the composition of recent Dammar resin and fossil Wasatch Plateau coal resins. Some of the technological implications of these findings and the consequent need for a more precise chemical definition and nomenclature are discussed.

Mining in Estonian oil shale deposit mainly takes place in the Ordovician, Keila-Kukruse aquifer. The aquifer is affected by mining and is fully dried out around the working mine areas (Perens and Savitski, 2008). The groundwater level is decreased down to 30 m, to the mine floor elevation using about 30 pumping stations (Lind, 2005). The pumping rate is very high - depending on the season, ranging from 10 up to 40 m3 per ton of produced oil shale (Reinsalu et al., 2006). The Estonian oil Shale Company mined 15.5 million tons of oil shale in 2007 (Source: Estonian Oil Shale Company). In order to predict the effects, and avoid the social and environmental impacts, there is a need to continuously monitor the situation and run software simulations aiming at decreasing the pumping rate. This becomes even more important since the environmental taxes on usage of groundwater resources increase every year. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor groundwater level and quality, and develop a groundwater model for the overview of the situation during mine operations and also for a number of years after mine closure.

New permit discharge standards instituted at Hecla Limited?s Lucky Friday Mine required installation of water treatment plants to manage water quality at two outfalls to the South Fork of the Coeur d?Alene River. The 002 Outfall Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is a clarification-filtration plant for treating the combined mill and underground discharge water flows. Process optimization efforts were a significant challenge until the negative impact the exploration diamond drilling products had on the clarification process was identified and resolved. The products were being wasted directly to the mine water discharge system which was pumped to the surface WTP. Anionic soluble oil and polyacrylamide based products were causing TSS particle hydrophobicity and dispersion that greatly affected coagulation and flocculation response, resulting in excessive chemical usage and treatment control issues. This paper details how problems associated with the drill products negatively impacted the 002 WTP and how system changes, alternative product usage and treatment at the source resulted in more consistent plant performance.

The production of oxygen on the Moon utilizing indigenous materials will be essential for successful lunar colonization. Several processes have been put forth to accomplish Lunar Liquid Oxygen (LLOX) generation. The schemes that have received the most study to date involve: 1) Reduction of ilmenite (FeTi03) by H2, CO, CH4, CO-Cl2 and Cl2, plasma. 2) Molten silicate electrolysis, both unadulterated and fluoride fluxed. 3) Several others, including H, reduction of glass, carbo-chlorination, HF acid leaching, fluorine extraction, magma oxidation, and vapor pyrolysis. The H2 reduction of ilmenite and molten silicate electrolysis processes have received the most study to date. They are both feasible schemes and have various pros and cons, including their feedstock requirements. However, all processes should be addressed at the onset of LLOX research. This paper reviews several of the most studied and feasible processes for winning oxygen front lunar materials. There is an obvious need for more experimentation and study.

Empirical methods for describing the shape of the subsidence trough over coal mines in Europe are tested against field measurements of subsidence over longwall panels in the United States. The graphical methods developed by the National Coal Board in the United Kingdom do not correlate well with the U.S. measurements; however, the profile functions typically used on the Continent give quite acceptable fits to the data. In the case of two longwall panels mined at Old Ben No. 24 in Illinois, a trigonometric profile function appears the best choice; in the case of two longwall panels mined at York Canyon in New Mexico, an error integral function is somewhat superior. Analyses of subsidence development curves show that rate effects occur. A comparison of fitting parameters establish influence functions as an important methodology for future analysis. In conjunction with the evaluation of empirical methods, an analytic model based on material failure and bulking was developed. A key element of the model is the void-volume distribution function which establishes a mechanism for transfer of significant amounts of the mined volume to the surface. Preliminary calculations demonstrate the features of the model and illustrate close correlation to physical observations in the field. Moreover, centrifuge models simulating the subsidence process have been used successfully to demonstrate the dominant or key failure modes necessary to the analytic model. General features of the centrifuge simulations and model calculations correlate well.

[An innovative framework is proposed which most efficiently and systematically handles the large quantity of information needed for equipment failure and other non-performance analyses. It is based on the accepted engineering dimensions of mass (material), length (geometry), and time (MLT). To these are added human and machine factor. Several failure "Modes" are identified for each dimension, which are then subdivided into specific "Types". Material Failure Modes such as Separation and Slip are easily recognized, but others had to be established. Geometric Failure Modes are usually straight-forward, Obvious ones include Geometrics Design and Stability with more synthesized. Time Failure Modes are again largely self-evident such as Life and Chemical Effects, others are needed. Human and Machine Factors as failure modes are loosely assembled. The results contain strengths, but also organizational weaknesses which are noted. Lacking a better alternative its use is recommended.]

Two types of airflow splitting methods for improving longwall dust control were investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Investigated were a translucent mesh barrier and a staged spray barrier system to confine the shearer-generated dust to the coal-extraction side of the longwall face while maintaining a cleaner split of airflow on the opposing worker walkway side of the longwall face. In laboratory experiments and in a longwall field evaluation, the translucent mesh barrier was shown to provide notable dust-control effectiveness for a distance of up to 60 m downstream of the shearer, provided that the mesh barrier remained relatively parallel to the airflow. The staged spray barrier system showed marginal dust-control effectiveness in the laboratory and, therefore, was not field tested.

In 1873 Barton tines Corporation mining Garnets for Abrasives. From providing bulk Garnet Concentrate the technology has advanced to the sizing and classification of micron sized particles utilizing a Barton process. Processing of Garnet involves extensive quality control at all steps, first to insure product purity and secondly to insure the correct size range. Barton Mines produces about 30 different sizes of Garnet products to lead the world in the manufacture of technical abrasive Garnet. This paper will examine the present technology of Garnet Abrasive Manufacture and the specification to which the sizes are produced as well as some of the markets served.

This paper presents an algorithm for the de- termination of a production schedule for an open pit mine that satisfies all principal physical and economic constraints required by a realistic mine design. We propose to model the evolution of the mine over time as a sequential optimization problem or, equivalently, as a problem of finding a path with a largest value in a graph. Some preliminary evidence is provided that such a path can be effectively sought by an algorithm that combines a number of heuristic search rules, inspired in part by learning theories developed in Artificial Intelligence.

Selective flocculation of iron ores is extremely sensitive to the type and amount of soluble salts in pulp solutions. Chemical precipitation of alkaline earth ions combined with ultrasonic treatment deactivates their adverse effects without using any environmentally ill-defined reagents. The manner in which ultrasonic treatment affects starch adsorption on hematite, dissolution of quartz, and the selective flocculation process was investigated. Selective flocculation tests were conducted in the presence of up to 400 ppm calcium ion on a quartz-hematite mixture by precipitation as calcium carbonate, and the role that silicate ion generated by ultrasonic treatment plays in achieving the selectivity of separation is discussed.

The porphyry copper province of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, is the largest copper producing region in the world. Most of the deposits occur in Arizona which now produces over 54% of the newly mined copper in the United" States. As the many recent discoveries are brought into production, Arizona's share of the nation's copper production will increase. The term "porphyry copper" as used in this paper includes all deposits of generally low grade disseminated copper mineralization amenable to bulk mining techniques. Therefore, copper deposits such as Pima-Mission, Twin Buttes, and Vekol where the copper mineralization occurs principally in the intruded rocks will be considered as "porphyry copper" deposits. Most of the deposits have been discovered since World War II, consequently, the southwest, and particularly southern Arizona is perhaps the most intensively explored area for copper deposits on earth. Most of the major natural resource companies in the United States and Canada maintain exploration offices in southern Arizona. To illustrate the success of exploration efforts, the location of porphyry copper deposits either known or producing prior to World War II are shown on figure 1 and the deposits discovered since World War II which are either in production or in the exploration and development stage are shown on figure 2.

For the purposes of this presentation, "refractory clay" is intended to include any clay suitable for refractory products and thus represents a description based on industrial application. Other common examples based on use would be white-ware clay, bleaching clay, paper clay, or cement clay. Most users and producers of refractories have specific quality requirements which determine the quality or type of clay that can be utilized. Many clays can however be interchanged or substituted in use by changing manufacturing processes or upgrading less desirable clays. U.S. Bureau of Mines publications (Ampian, 1985) categorize days into six groups. These are kaolin, fire clay, ball clay, bentonite, fuller's earth, and common clay. These are practical groupings based on clay production and usage in the United States. Among these groups bentonite, fuller's earth, and common clay are primarily composed of the minerals, smectite, illite, or chlorite, and are non-refractory. Kaolin, ball clay, and fire clay are commonly used in refractories and thus qualify as refractory clays.

It is a vital aspect of mineral production and conditions must be predicted over a long time frame in all aspects of the industry from exploration to plant construction. Although many government agencies as well as private industry make forecasts, there are insufficent "make good" analyses performed. The performance of more such studies could sharpen forecasting ability.

INTRODUCTION This chapter on underground rotary drills briefly describes the equipment features, selection or applica¬tion criteria, safety features, and relative costs of both face and roof drills. After a brief description of the basic components, the application, safety, and cost con¬siderations will be explored. ROTARY DRILL COMPONENTS As illustrated in Fig. 1, an underground rotary drill consists of five basic components. These components are the energy system, chassis, boom, feed assembly, and operator's station. Energy System The energy system of a typical underground drill con¬sists of an electric motor, driving a hydraulic pump or pumps. Usually, the drill is equipped with a cable reel to store the trailing power cable from the portable power center in the mine. A simple control box is supplied to house electrical switchgear and protective devices. In addition to the pump, the hydraulic portion of the energy system includes the hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic tram motors, relief valves, control valves, etc., necessary to actuate the various machine functions. Chassis The chassis provides the frame or support structure for the other four basic components of the drill. Fre¬quently, it incorporates an oil reservoir for the hydraulic system. The chasis provides the support for the trans¬mission, which drives rubber tires or, in the case of some foreign machines, the crawler tracks. The steering link¬age and steering tires also may be considered as parts of the chassis. Boom The boom is the structure that supports the feed assembly; it is either hinged or pivoted on the front of the chassis. Hydraulic cylinders on the boom are used to lift or swing the boom relative to the chassis and to swivel or "roll" the feed assembly. Feed Assembly The feed assembly is made up of the support struc¬ture with an integral thrust mechanism, a rotation unit, centralizers to stabilize the auger, and a hose handling arrangement. In addition, most drills have an extension frame with a tilt device to aid in positioning the feed. Operator's Station The operator's station is the area from which the miner operates the drill. UNDERGROUND ROTARY DRILL APPLICATIONS Underground Face Drills Underground face drills are used in mining opera¬tions that utilize the conventional mining system. The face drill is used to drill holes in the exposed face of the material, and the face is then "shot" by means of explo¬sives or high pressure air. The loose material then is ready for loading and transporting from the face to the preparation plant. Typical specifications for under¬ground face drills are listed in Table 1. Certain parameters should be established as to where the drill is to be used and what is expected of it. To create an awareness of some of the considerations that too often are overlooked, some questions are listed that should be asked in conjunction with the selection or application of the proposed drills. Energy System: Can the drill be supplied with the proper voltage to match the available or proposed elec¬trical power system of the mine? Is the system 250, 460, 500, 550, or 950 v; dc or ac; 3-phase; 60 or 50 Hz? Is the drill equipped with an adequate electric motor to handle the proposed duty cycle? Typical motor power on a single-boom drill would range from 25 to 40 kW (35 to 50 hp); the nominal power for a dual-boom

The Bureau of Mines is currently investigating the geophysical application of Tomography to monitor leachate during in-situ mining. Determining the location of the leachate is important for both economic and environmental reasons. By analyzing a sequence of tomographic images, we can determine where highly permeable/fractured regions are located and hence, major flow paths. Since BOMTOM (Bureau Of Mines TOMography - Tomographic Reconstruction Program), and BOMCRATR (Bureau Of Mines Curved RAy Tomography - Tomographic Reconstruction Program) are sensitive to user-selected ray path arrival times, we are also investigating the use of neural networks to automate the process of recognizing this feature. This paper presents a technique for detecting fracture zones and their orientations in a region between two boreholes, by using a motion analysis study of a sequence of tomographic images. It also addresses the need for an automated/unbiased method to pick crosshole seismic arrival times using a trained neural network. In exploration geophysics, the picking of first break arrivals represents a pattern recognition task. The neural net paradigm has proved to be a good method of solving this type of task. To pick the first arrival peak of a trace, the network is trained with a set of known (user selected) first arrival peaks by creating a binary image of a set of traces. Once trained, the neural net correctly picked first arrivals of the remaining traces in the set.

The purpose of this paper is to describe two systems designed to provide estimations in stratigraphic orebodies for the purposes of detailed mine planning. The first is a completely geostatistical approach and the second is a combined geostatistical/deterministic approach. The essential features of both systems are the estimation of stratigraphic ore boundaries and the subsequent use of those boundaries to provide stratigraphic (or zonal) control for block and point grade estimation (kriging). Both systems are illustrated by application to a section of, the Hilton orebodies, Queensland, Australia.

10.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter presents considerations which should be applied to heap leach pad site selection, site evaluation, and design, relative to the geotechnics of the site and ore. 10.1.1 General Guidelines are presented covering the topics encountered in design and construction of heap leach faci1ities. Because geotechnical characteristics vary from site to site, not all geotechnical topics associated with a specific heap leach facility are presented, and there may be exceptions to some of these guidelines. The general features of a heap leach facility (from Chapter 1) to be discussed in this chapter are: • Leach pad (including leach pad foundation and liner); • Heap; • Solution storage faci1ities (for pregnant and barren process solutions) ; and • Solution collection facilities (which collect and convey solutions in the heap and convey them to solution storage facilities). These general features are illustrated in Figure 10.1. Liners for these facilities are discussed in Chapter 11. Solution application systems and the sizing aspects of solution storage facilities are discussed in Chapters 6, 7, and 12. The general features listed above are constructed with and overlie naturally occurring materials (such as ore, borrow soils, and subsurface soils and rock). These natural materials are relied upon to perform in an acceptable manner as a component of the leach facility (such as the liner, drain material, and foundation).
