Roof deterioration in weak moisture-sensitive rock leads to roof falls in coal mines. An observation site was set up in intake air at an underground coal mine in central Ohio to evaluate the time-dependent deterioration of moisture-sensitive roof rock. By periodically collecting and weighing the rock falling from the roof, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was able to quantify the deterioration of the moisture-sensitive shale roof. The measurements showed that more roof rock is falling in the dry winter months. Movements in an intersection were monitored in order to determine if deformation correlated with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. The rate of intersection roof-to-floor convergence was found to be cyclical and related to seasonal changes, with more convergence during the months of April through September. At the study site intersection, the roof beam did not show deflection indicating movement most likely due to mine floor deformation. The bolt load also increased in the warmer months before shedding load, possibly due to rock failure. Temperature and relative humidity sensors, placed in holes in the roof show that mine air does not mix with the air in the holes. Consistent saturation levels of relative humidity were measured in the holes and it appears that high levels of moisture may have migrated into the bolt holes from roof shales. A roof sealant applied to a portion of the test roof appears to be preserving the roof and reducing the amount of rock fall into the entry, while the screened area virtually eliminated rock falling from the roof.

This paper describes the development of a new method and device for determining the in-situ mechanical properties of rock masses. The method involves a self-recording mechanical deformation gauge for sensing-recording she deformation of the borehole wall when loaded hydraulically. The self-recording feature of the gauge eliminates the difficult technical problem of transmitting signals over very long cables for measurements at great depths. Adopting a mechanical gauge instead of electronic, electrical, optical or grid techniques eliminates delicate instrumentation and installation problems. Moreover, mechanical gauges are inherently rugged and suitable for use in severe borehole conditions including very high temperatures. The technique was tested in limestone, basalt and granite specimen. The calculated mechanical property values for 1 the tests agree with those obtained by conventional testing methods. The self-recording mechanical deformation gauge has a minimum reading of 50 micro inches (1.27 x 10-3mm), comparable with electrical resistance strain gauges, capable of reading deformations over a range of 0.25 inches (6.35mm). The sensitivity, ease and accuracy of the method recommends it highly for in-situ rock modulus measurements.

Since 1974 researchers at Michigan Technological University have been studying mine subsidence in the Iron River District of Northern Michigan. The district, which was active from 1881-1978, has had numerous cases of subsidence. Much of the subsidence resulted from rock mass failure but some appeared to have developed primarily in the thick glacial overburden which is a typical feature of this area. This latter observation led to the recognition that some of the surface subsidence was due to piping; i .e., loss of overburden material to the mine voids by groundwater flow (Johnson and Frantti, 1978). The Sherwood Mine was the last mine to operate in the district. With its closedown scheduled for late summer of 1978, a unique opportunity to monitor the mine as it flooded was presented. It was reasoned that with the cessation of pumping, groundwater would rise in the overburden and the mine would flood. The physical characteristics of the mine were favorable for piping to occur as the mine flooded. With the permission of Inland Steel Mining Company and the support of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, a project to monitor the Sherwood Mine for piping subsidence began in June of 1978. This paper present aspects of this study pertinent to the piping-induced subsidence events which occurred at the Sherwood Mine in 1980 and 1981, including acoustic emission monitoring of the subsidence activity, hydrologic monitoring of the groundwater regime and the flooding mine, laboratory modeling of the piping mechanism, and analytic procedures which are under development.

In this part of the two-part paper we discuss briefly the adaptation of the comminution model to describe the observed behavior of an industrial grinding circuit. Although reported verification of comminution models for continuous systems is limited, some interesting work has been reported 1,2 recently. The data acquisition and modeling efforts are described first, followed by discussion of some of the simulation results. Observations pertinent to steady-state operation are presented followed by a description of the application of a dynamic model of the grinding circuit for synthesis and evaluation of grinding-circuit control. The pilot-scale work indicated the comminution model should be capable of describing an industrial size-reduction process. Recognizing the broad utility of a process model based on first- principles, the Industrial Nucleonics Corporation of Columbus, Ohio, embarked on a joint program with the Duval Corporation of Tucson, Arizona, to evaluate the industrial applicability of the models described in Part I. This program was conducted in a grinding circuit, which included a rod mill 12.5 feet in diameter and 16 feet long and a ball mill 12.5 feet in diameter and 14 feet long, at Duval Corporation's Esperanza property3. The rod mill was operated in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with cyclone classifiers.

Part of Capital Improvement Project SE-754 tendered by New York City Department of Design and Construction included installation of a 96-in. (2.47 m)diameter sewer by pipe jacking methods. The pipe selected by the Contractor, EIC Associates, Newark, New Jersey, was a glass-fiber-reinforced thermosetting resin pipe installed in two reaches: 72 m (235-ft.) and 222 m (728-ft.). The machine selected for the excavation was an open face shield. This paper describes the set up of the tunneling operations, subsurface conditions, progress of excavation, pipe performance and other details of the project including unexpected difficult ground conditions that were encountered during excavation and how these conditions were overcome.

The East Side Access (ESA) Project in New York will be the largest tunneling project ever undertaken by a US railroad. The objective of the ESA project is to connect the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Main Line and Port Washington Line in Queens to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The Project is divided into two distinctive segments: Manhattan and Queens. The Queens segment is subdivided into two major components; cut and cover tunnel construction and bored tunnels. The bored tunnels in Queens consist of five tunnels driven from a launch shaft and traverse a railway storage yard, Sunnyside Yard and terminate under the multitrack mainlines of Amtrak and LIRR at portals in the heart of Harold Interlocking where1200 trains pass every day. The soil consists of remnants of glacial till moraines and of outwash and till deposits of inter layered gravel and fines, with the occasional boulders and cobbles and with a high ground water table. It is anticipated that a Pressurized Face Machine, either slurry or Earth Pressure Balance equipped with roller disks to mine the boulders encountered as well as the mixed face, will be used to mine the tunnels. One pass reinforced concrete gasket bolted liner will be used. The cut and cover construction consists of an approximately 21.3 m (70 feet) deep excavation supported by slurry walls and jet grout columns. The slurry walls, in combination with overlapping jet grouted columns, are installed to top of rock forming a closed bathtub to control external groundwater drawdown. Maintaining the groundwater level near its original elevation is of paramount importance in order to prevent undesirable settlements and migration of groundwater that could be contaminated. Mitigation measures to prevent the migration of nearby plums are contemplated for all types of tunneling and excavation work in this site of the ESA project.

Zeolites are crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicates of the alkali and alkaline-earth metals. Their crystalline framework is based on a three dimensional network of SiO4 tetrahedra with all four oxygens shared by adjacent tetrahedra. The alkali and alkaline-earth cations are loosely bound within this framework structure and may be exchanged, to varying degrees, with other cations or molecular water. Most zeolites can be reversibly dehydrated. At present, close to 40 natural zeolite minerals have been identified and over 100 zeolites have been synthesized. Zeolites are a family of hydrous aluminosilicate minerals whose physical properties provide unique features for a wide variety of practical applications. Zeolites have been known for more than 200 years, but it was not until the middle of this century that their economic potential and widespread occurrence in sedimentary rocks were known. Since 1950, literally thousands of articles and patents have appeared in technical literature, and commercial pro¬duction of natural zeolites may now exceed 1 Mt worldwide an¬nually. In the past 40 years, the zeolite mineral group has changed from that of a museum curiosity to one of an established industrial mineral commodity. According to Breck (1974), zeolites are characterized by the following properties: 1) High degree of hydration, 2) Low density and large void volume when dehydrated, 3) Stability of the crystal structure of many zeolites when dehydrated, 4) Cation exchange properties, 5) Uniform molecular-sized channels in the dehydrated crys¬tals, 6) Ability to adsorb gases and vapors, 7) Catalytic properties. All zeolites are molecular sieves, but not all molecular sieves are zeolites. Activated carbon, activated clays, alumina powder, and silica gels are also molecular sieves. Molecular sieves are materials that can selectively adsorb molecules on the basis of their size, shape, or electrical charge (Clifton, 1987). Commercial application of zeolites is based on the following physical properties: molecular sieving, ion exchange, adsorption, and catalysis. Potential commercial utilization includes hundreds of possible applications. The principal uses at this time, however, are as fol¬lows: -Ammonium-ion removal in waste stream treatment, sewage treat¬ment, pet litter, and aquaculture, -Odor control, -Heavy metal ion removal from nuclear, mine and industrial wastes, -Agricultural use, such as soil conditioner and animal feed supplement. An estimated 800 kt to 1 Mt of natural zeolites were produced and consumed worldwide in 1991. Eight small operators reported collective production and consumption of an estimated 18 kt of natural zeolites in the United States during 1991, mostly for feed additives and for odor control, aquacultural, agricultural, catalytic, and ion exchange applications (Eyde, 1992).

In the past, a number of papers have been written on the use of various reagents as coal flotation frothers. For the most part, these papers have attempted to correlate the intrinsic chemical and physical properties of the reagents or reagent groups to the floatability of various fine coals. Because of the type or nature of evaluations made, chemically pure reagents were normally used. Generally, these reagents are unavailable in commercial quantities. Therefore, the results obtained with these reagents were usually limited in usefulness to the plant operator or metallurgist. This paper presents the results of a study in which commercially available forms of various reagents were used as flotation frothers. Flotation procedures which would conform in general to those employed in a large number of commercial coal flotation plants were utilized. The objective of the test was to compare these reagents on yield-selectivity-cost basis, that is, (1) the yields obtained, (2) the ash levels obtained, and (3) the reagent cost relating to these results.

In this paper, a computer program that has been developed for determining the capital and operating costs for coal preparation plants is described along with its applications. The logic of the computer program is based upon the results of a survey of existing preparation plants, operators, plant contractors, equipment manufacturers, and consulting firms. This survey provided information on plant performance, order-of-magnitude costs, and costing procedures. Additionally, an extensive cost data file for the major capital equipment in coal preparation plants has been developed. Using the washability data and the computer program outputs, the cleaning costs per million Btu can be calculated. Details about the program and its applications can be found in a report by the authors (Zigmond et al., 1979).

"This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study conducted by CONSOL Energy, Marcellus Shale Coalition, and Pennsylvania Coal Association to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations on the mechanical integrity of shale gas wells drilled over a longwall abutment pillar. The primary objective is to demonstrate that a properly constructed gas well in a standard longwall abutment pillar can maintain mechanical integrity during and after mining operations. A study site was selected over a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-ft-wide longwall faces under about 600 feet of cover. Four test wells and four monitoring wells were drilled and installed over a 125-ft by 275-ft centers abutment pillar. In addition to the test wells and monitoring wells, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the 1,500-ft-wide longwall panels on the south and north sides of the abutment pillar were mined by. To evaluate the resulting coal protection casing profile and lateral displacement, three separate 60-arm caliper surveys were conducted. Prior to the longwall panels being mined by, a number of 3D finite element simulations were conducted to estimate subsidence at the surface, coal pillar pressure increases, the resulting coal protection casing profile and displacement, and the vertical and horizontal displacements in the four monitoring wells. Comparisons of the pre-mining 3D finite element simulation results and the surface/subsurface/underground instrumentation results show that the measured test well and IPI casing deformations and profiles are in reasonable agreement with those predicted by the 3D finite element models, and that the measured surface subsidence and pillar pressure are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the 3D models, which serves to validate the 3D finite element models. Parametric studies employing the validated 3D finite element models demonstrate that larger coal protection casing thickness is expected to have little effect on the lateral deformation, although it may reduce the magnitude of casing plastic deformation, and under deeper cover (~1,100 feet), lateral casing deformation is expected to be smaller, although larger plastic casing deformation may be present near the seam level. Also, evaluation of various casing and cementing designs using the validated 3D models clearly indicates that, when all casings are grouted to the surface except the intermediate and production casings, the intermediate and production casings show little deformation and no plastic strain. This research represents a very important step and initiative to utilize the knowledge and science obtained from mining research to improve miner and public safety as well as the safety and health of the oil and gas industries"

The health and safety of employees, efficiency of the operating system and production are paramount goals in underground coal mining. The section foreman assumes responsibility for making his part of the total system function to meet these goals. However, section foremen often have not been prepared to assume the full range of their responsibilities upon becoming a supervisor. This discussion addresses the full range of section foreman responsibilities and concomitant authority. Management principles that must be mastered by him are presented, and performance expectations as well as criteria for their evaluation are examined. The benefits realized from effective foreman training are discussed.

This paper describes the recent application of gasketed, precast concrete segmental lining design that has improved tunneling productivity and quality. The speci?c segment arrangement includes: six-piece ring with equal 60 degree gasketed segments, juxtaposed key and counter-key segments, trapezoidal and parallelogram shaped segments, inclined and skewed radial joints and plastic circumferential joint connectors. This allows rapid, but accurate ring erection, reducing mine cycle times. The design avoids cruciform joints, minimizes potential gasket damage and eliminates the need for separate left and right ring molds. The implementation on the Los Angeles ECIS and NEIS sewer projects is described.

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

Silver-copper-zinc mineralization is confined to metasomatically altered late Paleozoic and Cretaceous sediments consisting predominantly of limestone, siltstone and sandstone units. Mineralized alteration halos are spatially and presumably also genetically related to the emplacement of a Cretaceous quartz monzonite stock. Several generations of ore formation and alteration took place. Distribution of skarn and ore was influenced by intrusive contacts, calcareous horizons and by relatively less permeable rock units which served as barriers. Most of the ore bodies form conformable near horizontal mantos but some follow steeply dipping monzonite dikes. Structurally controlled alteration pipes connect the mantos locally. The deposit is strongly affected by mineralized fault and breccia zones.

Most pyrometallurgical processes take place at high temperature with rapid chemical reactions when the elements and compounds are usually liquid or gaseous. Smelting. The classical method of obtaining a metal from its ore or concentrate is to smelt it in a furnace. The initial letter "s" of this word implies that, in addition to the physical process of melting, a chemical change also occurs. This is usually the reduction of metal oxide to metal by carbon or through a series of processes involving oxidation and reduction. Since solid-solid contact would not be sufficient to give a high rate of reaction, most smelting reactions occur by medium of two reactions involving solid-gaseous contact: where M represents a metal. The commonly preferred unit for carrying out these reactions is the blast furnace,1 which is a vertical shaft of refractory brick or water-cooled steel in which lumps of metal oxide and coke are fed at the top, and an air-blast is injected through tuyeres (water-cooled pipes) in the bottom. INTRODUCTION The process engineer usually is responsible for the design operating philosophy and/or day-to-day operations of a process. Since instrumentation is an integral part of the operation, it is essential that engineers understand the general capabilities of the different types of control equipment available. Many "noncontrol" engineers have become involved with instrumentation for machinery monitoring and control as well as other plant applications. The advent of the microprocessor has led to significant changes in control, both in systems configurations and man-machine interfaces. Today's concept is called simply "distributed control." What is distributed control? Distributed control is exactly what the name implies; the control system is divided into several functional segments and spread out to cover a process. The systems are distributed for physical, functional, and risk reasons. Before delving further into the specifics of distributed control, let's look at the evolution of control systems to see how we got here. Instruments initially were located near measurement and control points in the field. Operators physically had to go to the instrument to change setpoints or take measurements. As processes became more complex, it became evident that a central control area was required. This allowed an operator to monitor and control many variables. The operator's effectiveness was increased dramatically, which resulted in greater efficiency, better quality control, and lower personnel requirements. At the same time, plants became much larger, control applications became more complex, energy became expensive, and the industry became more competitive. All of these factors placed pressure on process and production engineers to get the most for the money. The result was a continuing push to put more instrumentation into a central control room to maximize efficiency and productivity and minimize manpower. This chapter deals in some detail with devices for measuring physical and chemical properties of coal; devices for measuring the weight and weight-rate of flow of coal; devices for the monitoring and control of conveyor systems, solids inventory, fluid flow, liquid level, density, and specific gravity. These instruments have a multitude of uses throughout a coal preparation plant. DESIGN BASIS Size of Project The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect with a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd with¬out major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Other projects are sized according to the tonnage of product rather than of mine ore; examples are iron ore mills that express size in terms of tons per year of pellets or high-grade concentrates, heavy minerals plants in tons per year of rutile or ilmenite, cement plants in barrels per year, potash in tons per year of muriate, phosphate in tons per year of washer rock and flotation concentrate, and others. However, tons per day milling rate is also the common denominator in most of those instances because the major equipment has to be selected on that criterion. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding, and processing. Hours per shift also are an impor¬tant factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into ac¬count. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure, but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as ten years, or as a specific daily capacity over the first two years, next four years, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent,1 where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. Expected Life The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis2 which, in turn, is based on many factors. From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, environmental considerations, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-year project may be waste¬ful for a 5-year operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grind¬ing-the former may be found more economical for a 5-year operation, and the other, more costly method more economical for a 15- to 20-year life. Mining and Ore Transportation The mining method and the means of transportation of the ore to the first crushing stage have far-reaching effects upon mill design, particularly the crushing sections, and upon site selection (see Chapter 2, Situation of Mill). Consequently, mill design cannot advance until the mine planning has reached at least tentative decisions concerning these important matters, or reach the final stages until much is known about the ore that may be expected month by month and year by year for a reasonable period. Methods of ore transportation used in over 90 underground and open-pit mines are listed briefly in Section 32 (Table 1), and more detail is found later in this section and in Section 10, Storage and Transport. These methods include surface railroad, trucks, conveyors, surface skips, underground skips, and tramming from hoist or tunnel. In surface mining, transportation of the uncrushed ore by rail or truck to the primary crushing plant-conveniently located for lowest overall cost-is most common. Rail transportation provides low perton-mile costs. Truck transportation, though in some cases less eco¬nomical, is more flexible and more adaptable to mountainous terrain; furthermore, recent improvements have reduced the operating costs to keep trucks competitive on low-grade ores. The design of the primary crushing plant will be essentially the same whether delivery is by truck or rail, but the location of the plant is subject to more rigid restrictions in the latter case because of grade limitations, and these in turn may adversely affect the selec¬tion of the mill site as well. The influence of truck haulage in reducing the stripping ratio in open-pit mines is an added reason for predicting a minor role for rail transportation in the future. The use of conveyors to transport ore from the pit to the milling plant involves (in most cases) crushing the ore to a reasonable size (10 to 20 in. maximum with today's crushers) before conveying. The Twin Buttes system3 which went into operation in late 1969, utilizes primary crushers (two) and conveyors to receive rock waste, ore, and low-grade stockpile material from trucks, then transport them to the appropriate destination. Flexibility is dependent upon the porta¬bility of the primary crushers. In the face of this development, inclined skip hoists are no longer important to the mill designers. Underground mines generally pose fewer problems of design; these will be discussed in Chapter 2. Character of Deposit The degree of homogeneity of the ore in various parts of the mine is an important factor. The characteristics that concern the millman (approximately in order of importance) are: hardness, assay, metallurgical response, size distribution,4 and moisture content. Under metallurgical response may be included degree of oxidation, mineral¬ogy, clay content, and reagent consumption, as well as process re¬sponse in general. Short-term variations-hour-to-hour, day-to-day, or even week-to-week-make operation of the plant more difficult, require greater flexibility of process design and, perhaps, also require more instrumentation and manpower. Any increasing number of restrictions are being placed on mining management's ability to pursue profit. Raw materials pricing, the cost of capital equipment, labor cost, and overhead costs, are becoming more difficult to control. Cost reduction is one of the few remaining areas in which management may still exercise its profit making ability. Equipment maintenance is an area where mine and mill management can readily reduce costs and increase profits. Why is this possible? First, maintenance costs comprise a large portion of total operating cost. Thirty to sixty percent of the operating cost dollar is not unusual. Even a relatively small percentage reduction in this cost represents a very sizeable increase to mining profitability.

The efficiency of search for porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits can be greatly increased. A model exploration system is here presented to show how geologic literature data and field surveys can be aided by modern statistical and computer methods. Assuming that major ore deposits occur in clusters, it is possible to evaluate rapidly large areas at modest cost and with minimum investment risk. An example of the success of these methods is given. Clusters of mine density and metal production covering the State of Nevada were plotted and machine contoured. Selection of a 47,300 square-mile area on the Nevada-California border was made. Within this area, detailed analyses were performed, and a 3000 square-mile site was picked for subsequent field examination. To initiate efficiently the field work, 81 stream sediment geochemical samples were collected and analyzed for copper, zinc, and molybdenum. These data established local variance and necessary statistical controls. Following this, a total of 151 geochemical samples were used to survey the 3000 square-mile area. Computer contouring of results directed attention to specific target areas for detailed geologic analysis, property acquisition and drilling. A total of 22 copper-zinc and molybdenum anomalies were identified. Four of these were recommended for further exploration. To date, two have been acquired and drilled and preliminary ore reserve and financial analysis have been made on one. The estimated cost and time for the regional exploration phases leading to these targets were thirty man-weeks and $16,000.
