In mid 1970, Park City Ventures, a Utah partnership of ASARCO and TAC, initiated a six phase exploration and development program in the Park City District, Utah. Geologic studies had delineated a number of exploration tar¬gets in several areas of the district. Discovery of ore in any of the target areas and continued favorable down dip development below then productive ore bodies would allow for reserve expansion and mill construction. The targets were: Mississippian Humbug Formation replacement mineralization below productive ore bodies on the east flank of the Park City Anticline; Humbug replacement mineralization in an unexplored fault block in the footwall of the Hawkeye structure on the east flank of the anticline; vein and replacement mineralization along the Silver Fissure; potentially higher grade Humbug replacement mineralization in a theorized structural block on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario Vein; Permian Park City Formation replacement mineralization in the West End Shaft Area of the Silver King mine; vein mineralization along the Back Vein in the Judge Mine. Chilean Nationalization in 1971 resulted in a 30% budget cutback. The Judge and Silver King Projects were suspended. In spite of the cutback additional reserves were developed below the Humbug East Flank ore bodies; a major zone of ore grade mineralization was discovered along the Silver Fissure; five new ore bodies were found in the Humbug, and Doughnut Formations on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario Vein. First concentrates were shipped from a new mill in May 1975.

The subject of this discussion is timely. The U.S. phosphate industry is suffering the throes of depression. It's plight is a matter of widespread concern. The future role of the U.S. industry in world markets is of particular interest. If we should prognosticate phosphate supply-demand on the basis of recent history, we would face a puzzling choice of scenario. In 1980, perhaps the best year ever for U.S. phosphate, 54.6 million metric tons of phosphate rock entered the market place. Of this, more than half was exported -- divided almost equally - as rock or phosphate fertilizer. During the last half of 1981 the situation had begun to change.

Extensive soil conditioning was required to allow Earth Pressure Balance(EPB) tunneling on the South Bay Ocean Outfall tunnel project in San Diego, California, near the Mexican border. This tunnel extends 19,000 feet out under the Pacific Ocean and was mined through soil formations including silts, sands, gravels, cobbles, and boulders. EPB pressures ranged from 3.0 to 7.0 bar, with the maximum pressures required when mining through the highly permeable granular formations.

Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the twentieth century. Nearly 90% of all metals and-mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mould of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. 1 Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined.

An extensive drilling and laboratory testing program indicates that diagenetic dolomitization of the Oligocene Sombrerito Fm. limestone, southwestern Dominican Republic, is detrimental to the usefulness and quality of the potential construction aggregate resource. The first part of this program was the collection, photographing, and geologic logging of diamond drill cores to allow lithologic subdivision of the strata into potential quarry layers. The primary lithostratigraphic units are: I (youngest) approximately 10 m of white, dense marine limestone; II, approximately 5 m of white, interbedded dense and chalky marine limestone; III, 2+ m of tan, chalky calcitic dolomite. Unit I has been often altered by lateritic weathering and/or dolomitization; Unit II is often altered by dolomitization. The quarry layers were individually crushed, by core, into coarse aggregate sizes for chemical and physical (specific gravity absorption, MgSO4 soundness, sand equivalent, and LA degradation) analyses. The non-weathered units decrease in coarse-aggregate yield and quality with depth and dolomitization. Dolomitization typically causes about 5% lower yield of coarse aggregate, a sand equivalent of about 20 units below the original value, an increase in absorption of about 3%, an increase in the LA of up to 13%, and a decrease in the average 5-cycle MgSO4 soundness by about 17%.

The authors present a comparison evaluation based on numerous studies to help make initial choices for feasibility evaluations. An update summary of completed Bond grindability and Abrasion Index testwork at Allis-Chalmers Process Research Test Center for all materials is included. "What is the best circuit to comminute primary crusher product to make beneficiation feed?" This frequently asked question has the implication that there is one circuit which is universally the right circuit. The answer has been sought ever since it has been necessary to break rock to liberate entrapped mineral values. With every new contribution to the art and the science of comminution, the scope of the discussions broaden. It is not even possible to define what the abstract term best means.

Heap leaching is discussed as a unit process. Five factors are identified as the principal elements that can be measured and/or controlled. These are: 1. Material Size 2. Volume of solution 3. Tonnage of heap 4. Time 5. Solution concentretion. The Rate of Extraction Curves obtained from an actual heap or column tests describes the economic viability of the unit process. By analysis of these curves and the five factors end their inter-relationship it is possible to determine how the extraction rate can be increased. The practice of leach and rest used by many operators is analyzed and shown on a hypothetical rate of extraction curve. The influence of the driving force of the hydrogen ion and ferric Lon as Lixivants and its effect on the rate of extraction curve is discussed.

One concern of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is the structural integrity of steel wire ropes used on mine personnel hoists and elevators. Failure of such ropes has resulted in loss of life and property. Although thorough and regular visual examinations are performed, hoist ropes may still fail from undetected internal wear, corrosion, and broken wires. To complement visual examinations, nondestructive rope inspection techniques have been developed to determine deterioration and removal criteria. The techniques use electromagnetic and permanent-magnet test instruments designed by a Canadian firm. This paper describes the operating principles, field and laboratory testing of these nondestructive testing instruments, and discusses the feasibility of using this type of testing as a supplement to visual examination and destructive tests.

In the present paper, two large diameter columns 2 m tall and 1.3 m diameter filled with crushed (finer) and run off mine (coarser) heap leach materials respectively were used to perform unsaturated flow studies. Instruments measuring moisture content and matric suction were placed in the columns at different depths as water was applied at calibrated flow rates from the top of the columns. The outflows from the columns were recorded using tipping bucket rain gauge placed at the bottom of the columns. Unsaturated hydraulic parameters were also obtained for the heap leach materials, scalped (passing 4.75 mm sieve size) and whole (passing 37.5 mm sieve size) sample. The measurements obtained from the columns were later compared with unsaturated flow modeling results. The comparison indicated sensitivity towards the sample size selection for unsaturated hydraulic parameters, and initial conditions considered in the model.

Spatial and temporal temperature and humidity variations for 5000 years are simulated in an emplacement airway within the conceptual, high-level nuclear waste repository proposed to be built at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. A multi-scale model is configured using MULTIFLUX, a thermohydrologic-ventilation code. The predicted surface temperature of most waste packages during post-closure exceed 140oC, the threshold limit known for likely localized corrosion for Alloy 22 waste package material. Small amounts of infiltration airflow through the mountain in Panel 5 are found to transport liquid water condensate to some of the waste packages emplaced along the peripheral section of the drift due to edge cooling.

A field study was undertaken to experimentally measure the concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) contained in the process streams generated by a group of 20 coal preparation plants located in the eastern USA. For each site, representative samples of clean coal product, coarse refuse, and fine refuse were collected. Each sample was then partitioned into preselected size and density classes by wet screening/sieving and float-sink testing. The resultant products were dried and subjected to laboratory analyses to determine ash contents and rare earth element concentrations including Yttrium and Scandium. A detailed analysis of the database generated by this exercise showed that coal-based products from these preparation plants contained significant quantities of rare earth elements. In particular, the coarse refuse streams currently discarded by the 20 plants examined were found to contain a sufficient tonnage of REEs to satisfy the current domestic demand for these important elements. The data also showed a strong positive correlation between ash content and REE concentration, which suggested that the primary association of REEs in eastern USA bituminous coal sources is likely within fractions containing inorganic impurities. This association was well described using a simple power equation relating ash content and REE concentration. The ratio of heavy-to-light rare earth elements was discovered to be significantly higher in organically rich fractions of clean coal, suggesting that mineral impurities intimately associated with carbonaceous matter have elevated concentrations of heavy rare earth elements. A similar trend was observed for a grouping of rare earth elements (Y, Nd, Eu, Tb, and Dy) that are likely subject to near-term supply shortages. Finally, the database showed that a linear correlation existed between La for many REEs of interest, although there were several notable exceptions for some high-value REEs (Lu, Pr, and Tb).

The following paper summarizes our observations on building response to mine subsidence and techniques for mitigation of building damage. The subsidence cases are located in Illinois. The general description of the geologic and mine conditions are primarily for those sites. Data on building response and mitigation measures were collected under grants supported by the Abandoned Mined Lands Reclamation Council (AMLRC) of Illinois and the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in Twin Cities, Minnesota. Case histories include pit and sag subsidence primarily beneath abandoned room and pillar mines. The majority of the paper deals with structures affected by sag subsidence. Most of the structures are one and two story homes. The first section of the paper summarizes the typical geologic and mining conditions at the sites. Building response to pit and sag subsidence follows the first section. Emphasis is placed on the behavior of concrete and masonry foundations, and wood frame and masonry superstructures. The third section describes mitigation techniques used to prevent or minimize building damage. A summary of the observations and critical parameters is given at the end of the paper.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. Copper and gold were discovered in the Copper Canyon area of the Battle Mountain district of Lander County, Nevada, in August of 1866. By 1876 a gravity plant was con¬centrating oxidized Copper Canyon copper-gold ores. The history of mining in the district to 1967 has been summarized by John E. Frost (in press) as a case history of the discovery of the Battle Mountain porphyry copper deposits. His summary is not repeated here; rather, the present case history covers exploration since 1967, primarily for gold ores. Subsequent to the construction by Duval of facilities to mine the porphyry copper deposits in 1967, Duval established a geologic staff at the mine to continue district exploration. The staff was guided by David W. Blake, who acted as chief geologist for Duval's exploration in this part of Nevada. Blake's activities led to the publication of numerous technical articles, including his contribution to the US Geological Survey Professional Paper 798-B. A part of that volume is attached as a reprint (pages 23 through 66) as an explanation of the geological setting of mineralization in the district. The work by Blake and his staff recognized metal zonation in the skarn environment at Copper Canyon, and their studies were incorporated in the development of the Tomboy-Minnie gold deposits that are peripheral to the porphyry. Exploration continued beyond the immediate vicinity of the porphyry and the Fortitude ore zones were discovered. These skarn deposits are described in the attached article by Wotruba, Benson, and Schmidt, published in the July 1986, MINING ENGINEERING. The continued exploration successes at Battle Mountain reflect on the well organized and effective exploration team developed at the mine. The team has provided successive discoveries in a district known mostly for ore bodies that are exhausted in a few years' time.

Large diameter autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding mills represent the primary thrust of the expanding grinding technology. In spite of initial difficulties, large autogenous and semi-autogenous mills have reached an acceptable level of technology which provides the mineral engineer with a reliable, low cost means of ore comminution. A successful milling installation begins during the design stage of the grinding mill and the plant it is to be installed in. This is particularly true in autogenous and semi-autogenous mills. Critical mill and plant design factors should be considered while the mill and installation are still only ?paper.? Various current liner designs will be discussed ranging from lifter bar/plate to integral types. Modes of operation such as "high-low" will be considered. Liner maintenance procedures ranging from laydown area in plant design, proper mill shutdown methods, to installation and bolt tightening complete the equation to yield optimum performance possible for any particular grinding application. The objective of this paper is to discuss trends in wear materials, designs and operating practices, and provide some guidelines for good practice as we move through the 1980's. We will put together concepts that relate to the designs, materials and applications so that higher performance can be obtained by the operator for his specific application. The concepts are shown as being in series because they are dependent on each other to achieve the desired performance.

Since the critical role of oxygen in xanthate flotation of sulphides was established (1) subsequent studies have been concerned mainly with the galena-xanthate system. It is therefore surprising to find at the conclusion of a comprehensive review of the topic by Granville, Finkelstein and Allison (2) that it was not possible for them to draw unequivocable conclusions on the mechanism of xanthate adsorption. It was apparent that some new advances were likely if systems other than galena-xanthate (Pbs/x-) were examined. (2) Specifically a less reactive sulphide such as ZnS may interact with flotation reagents at a slower rate than PbS and more information per unit time gathered. Again ZnS is far less reactive electrochemically than PbS or stated equivalently, it is a poorer semiconductor than PbS. More importantly, the ability of ZnS to act as a semi-conductor can be controlled photochemically rather than by direct doping reactions for which it is difficult to assess the uniformity of doping. Thus the conductivity of ZnS can be made the same as that of PbS by irradiating the ZnS with ultraviolet light at circa 360 n.m. (3)

The success of the excavation of a sewage tunnel in a very extreme geological conditions, from river deposits and sandy layers to hard dolomite, and several meters below the estuary under the sea water influence, shows that the choice of a right equipment together with the use of chemical products like foam and polymers enable to dig tunnels in unexpected areas and give solution to the environmental problems. The paper describes the excavation and support process as well as the adopted solutions in every material and during the cross through the intermediate shafts, also under sea influence.
