For some time, selenate has eluded water treatment by conven­tional means such as precipitation and clarification. This has been due to the nearly universal solubility of all oxidized sele­nium species, the low levels required for surface discharge, and almost identical chemical behavior to all forms of oxidized sul­fur. The last characteristic makes selenate particularly difficult to deal with in acid mine waters where sulfate can easily be on the order of one gram per liter. Approaches such as ion exchange or reverse osmosis often tum into total demineraliza­tion schemes for the sake of removing a "trace" selenium species that may be present on the order of 108 sulfate/selenate. Reduction of selenate to selenite or elemental selenium by chemical means has been relatively unresearched. Some limit­ed success has been reported (Murphy, 1988) using ferrous hydroxide as a reducing agent; however, the reaction time as reported is too slow to be useful in a practical plant design. One significant difference between selenate and sulfate is that selenate has been discovered to be reducible in acid solution by elemental iron when catalyzed by soluble copper. Since the +4 or zero valence states of selenium are rather easy to deal with by coprecipitation with iron salts or alum, the elemental iron dis­solved in the process contributes to the overall process by pro­viding sludge upon raising the pH that can be separated by con­ventional clarification. Commercial production of selenium using copper catalyzed reduction of selenite to selenium metal via sulfur dioxide is well established, however, at the < 5 ppb requirements for surface discharge this reduction process equili­brates at levels far too high to be useful to low level selenate removal criteria. The reaction reported herein uses elemental iron for reduction of selenate with copper acting either as a cata­lyst or as a coprecipitation agent. This method, employed with conventional sludging, clarification and filtration can provide an economic method to achieve non detectable selenium (< 0.005 mg/I). Iron consumptions for the conditions tested have been on the order of 3 lbs/1,000 gallons treated. This represents as little as $0.06 or $2.00 per 1,000 gallons based on using a scrap source of iron or the purchase of electrolytic iron for the process.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND A program in France to develop personal [a] dosimeters has been initiated 1974. The patent on which is based the present device was obtained in 1972 * . From 1972 to 1974, the possibilities of applying certain ionograph track detectors to the spectrodosimetry of radon daughters was explored. The first prototype were produced in 1974. It took four years (from 1974 to 1978) to produce an autonomous dosimeter whose components has a sufficient life span, especially for the turbine motor unit. Qualification in the laboratory was obtained in 1977. In 1978 it was obtained in the mine for technology (autonomy of 12 hours and a life span of more than one year) and in 1980 for monitoring. 300 dosimeters have been tested in underground mines all together. Indispensable peripheral equipment were also developed from 1976 to 1980 : calibration devices, equipment to prepare and develop the films, read out systems. The concept of an "Integrated System of Individual Dosimetry" (ISID) based on a personal [a] dosimeter measuring exposure to radon daughters, thoron daughters, ore dust and external irradiation doses was proposed at the end of 1980. Since January 1st 1981, ISID is used on a routine basis in some french mines, situated in remote area, and appears to be very competitive with the ambiant dosimetry. The latest version of the dosimeter is produced in mass series since June 1981 and should equip all french mines in 1982. DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENTATION DEVELOPMENT OF THE DOSIMETER MEASURING HEAD The measuring head is based on the use of ionographic film to detect a tracks. In fact, the measuring head is a spectrodosimeter which measures separately over the period of exposure: - the potential [a] energy inhaled due to the decay of Po 218, Po 214, and Po 212 ; - the number of Rn 222 atoms inhaled ; - the inhaled total [a] activity of the five long-lived emitters present in the ore dust. The contribution to the total inhalable potential [a] energy of these various radionuclidesin a typical underground mine is studied in Appendix I. The measuring head described in detail in Appendix II, is able to satisfy all the implications made in the ICRP recommendations. Appendix III deals with the use of this measuring head in the cases where the equilibrium factor is lower than 0.1. This situation occur in open-pit mines where account must be taken of the Rn 222 contribution, which is no longer negligible in relation to that of its daughters. CURRENT DOSIMETER PERFORMANCES Table I shows the characteristics of the latest dosimeter. Appendix IV should be consulted concerning qualification of the dosimeter in the laboratory and in mines, technological development which finally produced the [a] dosimeter and its peripheral equipment, and technical presentation of the ISID (Integrated System of Individual Dosimetry) based on the concept of a multirisk personal dosimeter. Data on the installation and operating costs of such a dosimeter, which would seem to be competitive, are also given in this Appendix. ADVANTAGES OF PERSONAL DOSIMETRY AS COMPARED TO AREA MONITORING The results of the first eight months of experiments carried out under real conditions in an underground mine site are given in detail in reference 8. Area monitoring : The monthly exposure per worker to inhaled Rn 222 was determined from the knowledge of time spent in various areas of the mine and for the different mining operations, as well as from numerous and systematic sampling of the Rn 222 concentration in all work places. Personal dosimetry : The exposure to potential energy from radon daughters was measured by an [a] dosimeter developed by the CEA and worn by each of the 160 miners during eight months. In this way 160 x 8 pairs of monthly individual exposure values have been obtained which can be statistically studied. This test was decisive for us because it proved that the [a] dosimeter was technically sound (very few defects over one year for 160 dosimeters) and especially that personal monitoring devices were superior to area monitoring devices. The following conclusions can be drawn 1. The exposure distribution obtained by personal dosimetry is log-normal. This is true for the results on the whole as well as for groups of results relating to certain explanatory variables. See fig. la, 1b, 1c. 2. The exposure distribution obtained by area monitoring does not correspond to any type of distribution. If the results of personal monitoring are taken as a reference, area monitoring tends to underestimate the high exposures and overestimate the low exposures.See fig. 2. 3. [a]-energy exposures are underestimated when calculated from radon exposures and the equilibrium factor found in the considered mines. This is due to episodes or to zones of high radon concentrations not registered

Last year in the US alone, about 425 Mt (468 million st) of minerals and coal were beneficiated by froth flotation. This number indicates that from 1983 there was a 10% increase in tonnage of min¬erals and coal beneficiated by the indus¬try. A significant improvement was seen in the tonnage processed by the nonferrous minerals and coal industries. BP Minerals America installed 85 m; (3000 cu ft) flotation cells at the Bing¬ham Canyon mine and concentrator. The new flotation circuit has fewer than 100 cells compared to 2000 flotation cells used in the old plant (Mining Engi¬neering, November 1988). Column flotation use on a commer¬cial scale continues to expand as seen from the interest expressed at the Col¬umn Flotation Symposium (Column Flotation &apos;88). The Magma Copper Co., San Manuel Division replaced all con¬ventional cells with 1.8 x 12 m (6 x 40 ft) column flotation cells for copper con¬centrate cleaning. Also, 1220 mm and 760 mm-diam (48 in. and 30 in.-diam) column cells are operating at the plant in the molybdenum circuit. A commercial Diester Flotaire col¬umn cell for fine coal recovery was installed at the United Coal Wellmore No. 20 plant. The 36.8 m3 (1300 cu ft) cell recovers 13.6 to 18 t/h (15 to 20 stph) of -590 gm (-28 mesh) coal. A similar unit has been installed at Tanoma Mining Co. in Pennsylvania. Various modifications of the column cells are being designed around the world. Jameson (Mining and Metal¬lurgy, 1988) described a new concept whereby the feed and air stream mixture is discharged into a cylindrical column of about 1.2 m (4 ft) height. Recovery and grade of nonferrous minerals have been reported to be better than that in a four-stage conventional flotation clean¬ing circuit. Flotation reagents American Cyanamid and Dow Chemical continued development of a new generation of sulfide collectors. A general feeling is development of new sulfide collectors has not kept up with flotation technology. Additionally, joint efforts between industry and chemical suppliers will likely be necessary to realize the economic benefits of the new technologies, since new chemistries respond differently compared to the conventional collectors. Flocculant development in recent years has been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Rothenborg reported on development of a new flocculant family (a hydroxymated polyacrylamide desig¬nated S-6703) that has shown consider¬able promise in red mud clarification. Plant testing showed that this new floc¬culant could replace starch and poly¬acrylate and provide significantly higher overflow clarity. Barol Kami (Siirak) and Cleveland¬Cliffs (Hancock) reported development of an amphoteric apatite collector (ATRAC 873) that was used in Tilden&apos;s silica flotation process to increase apatite rejection. The collector was engineered for the particular flotation conditions in the complex Tilden process. Significant plant testing with ATRAC 873 showed that this reagent gave significantly in¬creased apatite rejection without any effect on silica flotation effectiveness or selectivity. Electrostatic separation Electrostatic separation is now em¬ployed in the precious metals mining industry to recover gold and silver grills from crushed slag. The installation at Paradise Peak has prompted other op¬erators to consider this application. In another development, attractive potentials for treating very fine minerals (-45 µm or -325 mesh) are being devel¬oped by Advanced Energy Dynamics and by the Department of Energy. Demonstration tests using triboelectric charging/electrostatic separation have been successful on a variety of minerals as well as coal. Magnetic separation Developments in magnetic separa¬tion have transpired on a production scale. Superconducting, high gradient magnetic separation has gained accep¬tance with the successful startup of a second unit treating kaolin at J.M. Huber Corp. This liquid-helium-cooled mag¬net generates 2.0 tesla in a 3-m-diam (120-in.-diam) bore with no power con¬sumption. Wet, high-intensity magnetic separation has been applied to sulfide mineral separations both domestically and abroad. These continuous type of separators are effective in removing residual chalcopyrite and sphalerite from other base metal sulfide concentrates. Separators using high energy rare earth permanent magnets are continu¬ally increasing. Now offered as both drum and roll type, these units are be¬coming a staple in the processing of industrial minerals. Tests using rare earth magnets strategically placed on a spiral concentrator have demonstrated the enhanced recovery of heavy miner¬als such as ilmenite. Classification Although no major technology break¬throughs in classification appear immi¬nent, there is an increasing need for more efficient and cost-effective meth¬ods to make size separations. It is be¬coming more apparent that mineral concentration methods will be more common at very fine sizes, say below 50

INTRODUCTION Tens of deposits in&apos; coal basins of Western and Eastern Siberia are being open-mined with the technology of overburden rehandling into the mined out space of pits by excavators - draglines. This technology is preferred due to the high productive Russian equipment, comparatively low cost, and relatively small Influence exerted on the environment. The basic tendency of the last decades is the aspiration for enlarging the sphere of the&apos; technology application for development of gentle and steeply dipping seams with the use of blast destruction of overburden and with combined winning of loose alluviums and rock partings. Complex technological schemes with multiple rehandling are widely used. In addition to it, stripping workings, intermediate storage of mineral resources, placing of transport dumps, and engineering construction can be realized with the use of draglines. More than ten of dragline faces are simultaneously exploited in some pits, and the rehandling coefficient ranks from 0.1 to 8. Here, conditions of winning and placing (position of a face and existing dump) are varying in space and time; this leads to the necessity of reconsidering the order for conduction of works (schemes) within the current designing. By now, in order to this, it is required to realize complex engineering calculations by graph-analytical methods and definite experience. The need is available for automatization of this process by creation of the corresponding software. The software is to: • Orient on the active pits and use information on the existing geology, equipment, and situation in mine. • Calculate the existing schemes more operative and on a higher qualitative level to model their development in a pit space with parameter optimization. • Predict situations demanding to change the existing technology for mining operations and recommend optimal technological schemes. METHODOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR MODELING The problem is not new, it has more than fifty year-old history of creating mathematical models algorithms, and programs in Russia, Ukraine, USA, Canada. Australia and other countries with the developed mining branch. Conventionally, all population of programs can be divided into three groups depending on goal and interval of prediction: • Long-term programs used in designing and intended for substantiation of the nine capacity, selection of mining system, establishment of limits for applying the technology of overburden rehandling. 7.1-STABILITY OF SLOPES IN SOIL AND ROCK ROBERT H. MERRILL 7.1.1-DESIGN ANALYSIS APPROACHES The analyses of slopes in soil or rock can be made through application of soil- or rock-mechanics principles. In most cases, the material in the slope wall can easily be identified as either a soil or a rock. However, there will be instances where, because of unique characteristics, the soil may behave as a rock structure, or vice versa. By necessity, these unique cases must be identified through experience or critical observation by the engineer, because there are no definitive rules clearly establishing the differences. The most important step in a solution to a slope problem is to define it. Normally, once the problem is identified, a solution usually can be found or a reasonable estimate obtained. The design analysis of a slope wall implies an evaluation of the stresses or forces in the wall, and of the ability of the material in the wall to withstand them. Therefore, the factors influencing a design analysis can be divided into two categories: those which influence stresses, and those which influence the ability of the wall to withstand stress. For simplification, the latter is termed the strength of the soil or rock. Perhaps the basic difference between analyses for soils and those for rock is in the identification of the failure surface. Soils generally do not have an identifiable failure plane. However, some soil layers in a slope wall may have different strengths. A soil slope wall may consist of a thin layer of topsoil overlying a thick, uniform clay, or a topsoil over a gravel or other materials. Therefore, the soil generally does not have a potential plane of weakness that can be identified through observation. On the other hand, rocks normally contain planes of weakness in the form of fractures, faults, joints, bedding planes or other discontinuities weaker than the intact rock, which can be found through observation and/or tests upon rock samples. If the failure surface cannot be identified, the principles of soil mechanics should apply because, in soil mechanics, the failure surface usually is assumed. If it can be identified, then the principles of rock mechanics should apply. 7.1.2-ANALYSES OF STRESSES OR FORCES IN SLOPES All existing methods of soil-slope analysis are based upon interpetations of the Coulomb and Coulomb-Navier failure criteria, commonly termed the total-stress 2nd the effective-stress criteria (Sec. 6.1). From the earliest use of crushed and broken stone as landfill for eroded gullies in trails and roads, to the mixing of sand and gravel with cement to make concrete, men and women have found mineral aggregates to be useful materials in satisfying human wants. Crushed stone, sand and gravel, volcanic cinders, pumice, manufactured lightweight aggregates, slag, cinders, expanded perlite and vermiculite, and a great array of recycled materials such as grog (broken or crushed brick) and fly ash have served as mineral aggregates. These materials have provided bulk and strength in portland cement concrete, bituminous concrete, road base, fill, concrete block, and plaster and stucco finishes. Mineral aggregates provide many special characteristics such as compressive and tensile strength, surface textures, weight and density, thermal and acoustical insulation, abrasion resistance, and impermeability to various concrete products and mixes. While most materials used as mineral aggregates are consumed on the basis of their low unit values, the large volumes extracted in the United States each year make them one of the most valuable mineral resources in current production. In 1960, US production of construction aggregate was just over a billion tons per year (Meyer and Zelnick, 1991). Two decades of accelerated interstate highway, residential, and commercial construction brought the total annual production of mineral aggregates to roughly 1.4 Gtpy by 1970 and just over 1.6 Gtpy by the late 1970s. General economic and related construction slowdowns in the early 1980s saw annual US production of aggregates fall to below 1.1 Gt in 1982, and then rise to just over 1.7 Gtpy in 1990, a new peak in mineral aggregate production and use. Per capita annual consumption of mineral aggregates was approximately 5.68 t/capita in 1960, 6.89 t/capita in 1970, rose to a high of 7.25 t/capita in 1979, and has since settled to just under 7 tpy for every man, woman, and child counted in the United States Census of 1990. The value of these materials came to approximately $9 billion in 1990. During the period 1960-1990, roughly half of all mineral aggregates were used in the construction of residential, commercial, and industrial structures, and the remainder was consumed in highways, bridges, and other transportation facilities such as railway roadbeds, airports, and water-related projects (Meyer and Zelnick, 1991). During the period 1988-1992, public works (highways, waterway projects, road maintenance, etc.) represented closer to 60% of annual mineral aggregate demand with residential and non-residential construction approximately 40%. The growing market share of public works projects has been mostly due to the dramatic slowdown in residential, commercial, and industrial construction during the 1988-1992 period.

In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.&apos;s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation&apos;s intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina&apos;s coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). The Gulf Coast Region has been the center of extensive lignite exploration and development activity in the past 10 years. Currently, 27.2 Mt (30 million st) of lignite are mined annually, the majority of which is uncovered by large walking draglines. Projections indicate that production could reach 125 Mt (138 million st) by 1990. As mining moves to deeper depths, removal of overburden becomes the decisive factor in mine planning and cost. The geology of a region plays a key role in the selection of an overburden removal system. While alternate stripping methods must be analyzed to determine the most economical and operationally sound method, so far bucketwheel excavator systems seem to be the best method for removing large volumes of soft, unconsolidated material that is found at projected mining depths in the Gulf Coast region. Geology of Gulf Coast Lignites Extent Distribution of the principal tertiary lignite-bearing deposits in the Gulf Coast Lignite province extend from the Texas-Mexico border to the Alabama-Georgia state line (Fig. 1). The lignite-bearing strata includes portions of eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lignites occur primarily in the Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson groups in the Gulf Coast. The uppermost strata of the Midway group in Mississippi and Alabama also contain significant lignite resources. Reserves Commercial lignite seams in the Gulf Coast Lignite province range from 0.6-3 m (2-10 ft) in thickness. The estimated lignite resources throughout the Gulf Coast in seams greater than 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and up to 61 m (200 ft) in depth currently are estimated at 32 Gt (35 billion st). Table 1 shows these resources by state. Quality Lignite quality can vary within individual mining areas and seams. However, trends in quality occur because of the depositional environment, age, and west-to-east geographical location. Better quality lignites occur in the Wilcox group in Texas and Louisiana. Poorer quality lignites occur in the northern regions of the Wilcox group and those of the geologically younger Claiborne and Jackson groups. Environmental Conditions Gulf Coast province environmental conditions are ideal for successful mine reclamation. The lignite occurs in flat to moderately rolling terrain, a topography easily reproduced from the spoil dumps or spoil rows developed during the mining operation. High to moderate rainfall facilitates rapid revegetation. Evidence from current mine reclamation programs and ongoing test plot studies indicate that mined lands can be reclaimed to reach premining productivities. Sometimes productivities are even greater than that of premining conditions. The United States has very large coal reserves in seams that are less than 1065 mm (42 in.) thick. These reserves are often not mined because of the difficulty of working in low heights and, in most cases, the seams are beyond the technical or economical limits. It is estimated that the remaining reserves in 355 to 710 mm (14 to 28 in.) thick seams that are not faulted or intruded, dip less than 15° and under a cover of 610 m (2000 ft) or less are nearly 910 Gt (1 trillion st). This is a very large percentage of coal reserves in the United States (Unrug, 1985; DuCarme et al., 1990). The US Bureau of Mines is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm (6 to 42 in.) thick coal seams. Research has focused on existing thin seam mining techniques, testing of small- and full-scale physical models of the Bureau&apos;s slot mining concept and computer modeling of the full-scale process. In 1986, only 21 % of the total US coal production came from -1065 mm (-42 in.) thick seams. Of that, 355 to 710 mm (14 to 28 in.) thick seams share of production was minimal, probably 5% or less (Mayercheck et al., 1990). This shows that the thin seams, particularly the seams 355 to 710 mm (14 to 28 in.) thick, have not been mined to the extent of the available reserves. Thin seam coal, generally, is of premium quality. As thicker seams are depleted, the mining of thin seams could become more important. Thus, there is a need to develop technology to mine these seams (J. Farinelli et al., 1987). A successfully applied technology could change reserve categorization. In the Appalachian Plateau there are 417 Gt (460 billion st) in 355 to 1065 mm (14 to 42 in.) seams. This represents nearly 9.2% of the US remaining reserves (Unrug, 1985). At depths of 152 m (500 ft) or less, the Appalachian Plateau has about 214 Gt (236 billion st) of reserves in 355 to 1065 mm (14 to 42 in.) thick seams. Other mining areas also have substantial coal reserves in this seam thickness category. Those, however, are not as attractive for mining as the Appalachian Plateau. In the past, most of the reserves of the Appalachian Plateau region were partially worked by contour and highwall auger mining. It is estimated that these mining systems had left some 40,230 km (25,000 miles) (Readers Digest, 1987) of unreclaimed highwalls. The Bureau recognized this situation. In FY1987, the agency initiated a research project to develop anew technology for mining thin seams of the Appalachian Plateau.

The Inland System supplies raw water to the industrial and domestic users in the City of Birmingham, Alabama. The Inland System, which is nearly 60 years old, consists of an approximately 57.9m (190 feet) high earthen dam across the Blackburn Fork of the Black Warrior River, a 39.6m (130 feet) high reinforced concrete intake structure, a 1524mm (60inch) diameter Dresser coupled steel transmission pipeline, and various distribution lines extending into Birmingham. The Inland System was owned, operated and maintained by the Industrial Water Board (IWB) of the City of Birmingham, an agency of the city government, from 1958 until 1994. In 1994, the City of Birmingham consolidated all water and distribution functions under the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB). In 1988, the IWB determined that the Inland System had reached a point where its reliability could not be assured without an in-depth evaluation and renovation. The IWB engaged Christy/Cobb, Inc. (CCI) of Birmingham as its consultant for the renovation work. CCI evaluated the Inland System and submitted a report to the IWB in April, 1992. The report contained several recommendations for capital improvements to the system including increasing the emergency spillway capacity, reconstructing the fuse plug, relocating public access to the lake away from the dam area, constructing a new intake structure, and constructing a tunnel through the dam abutment to deliver the water from the proposed intake structure to the existing 1524mm (60 inch) diameter supply line. The new intake structure and tunnel would provide for a future maximum demand flow rate as well as provide bypass and level control capabilities. CCI was authorized in 1992 to proceed with the engineering design for the renovation of the Inland System with emphasis on the spillway and intake structure. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The major component of the renovation of the Inland System was the new intake structure and tunnel through the dam abutment. CCI engaged Jenny Engineering Corporation (JEC) of Springfield, New Jersey as a consultant for the tunnel design. JEC was responsible for the design of the tunnel, the connecting shaft between the intake structure and tunnel, and the steel pipe final lining, while CCI was responsible for the intake structure and the connection to the existing supply pipeline as well as overall project management. CCI and JEC evaluated the project site in order to select the location for the new intake structure and set the alignment for the tunnel. A factor in the evaluation process was that the level of the lake could not be lowered to construct the new intake structure since the supply of water from the Inland System had to maintained. Introduction There is a continuing search by government and industry for new mining methods that increase production, improve the working environment, reduce labor intensity, enhance recovery effectiveness, improve the reclamation process, streamline the flow of material, and reduce the unit cost. Hydraulic extraction and transport methods have outstanding potential in several of these areas. For example, hydraulic fragmentation produces a significant reduction in respirable dust. The inherent simplicity of hydraulic mining equipment and the resulting high reliability are recognized. Tool wear can be virtually eliminated. There is great flexibility in the size, shape, and orientation of the mineral deposit that can be mined. The cutting, gathering, and transport operation can be controlled remotely, providing more safety for workers. The threat of tool sparking and the resuiting dust or gas ignition are also eliminated. Although hydraulic mining was introduced in the US before the turn of the century, it has not gained the degree of acceptance found in other countries such as the Soviet Union, China, Germany, and Canada. The Hydraulic Mining Research program, initiated by the US Bureau of Mines in 1958, and the subsequent research by others has provided much of the basic technology required to spur the development of these methods into a viable extraction alternative. This article updates the development of hydraulic mining in the US. Particular attention is paid to monitor mining, the long-wall hydrominer, borehole mining, and the semi-autonomous mining system. Whenever the particular mining method is also being developed in other parts of the world, a brief description of the world-wide state of the art is given. Finally, allied studies designed to optimize these mining techniques are described. Hydraulic Monitor Mining Since 1958, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), the Department of Energy (DOE), and other government agencies have funded more than a dozen programs to investigate the potential of hydraulic monitor mining. For this method, water is directed on the coal face from a monitor nozzle. Sufficient velocity is used to cause local fragmentation (Fig. 1). Coal particles are washed from the face to a trough. They are then flumed to a collection point. Oversized particles are directed through a breaker and then into the troughs. Monitor field tests were conducted in the 1960s in bituminous and anthracite coal at the following locations: • Rosylin No. 9 mine, WA (Nasiatka and Badda, 1963); • Rosylin No. 10 mine, WA (Price and Badda, 1965); • Sugar Notch mine, PA (Buch, 1964); • Thomson Creek mine, CO (Palowitch and Malinka, 1964); and • West Lebanon, PA (Fowkes and Wallace, 1968). INTRODUCTION The selective sensitivity of plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTD&apos;s) to low energy 4He particles in an environment which also contains gamma and beta radiations has made these detectors prime candidates for the dosimetric measurement of the concentrations of radon and its daughter products in mine air. Their passive, integrating mode of measurement, small size, low weight and inexpensiveness are attractive characteristics for large scale personnel dosimetry. The detectors can be used in either active or passive dosimeters. In active devices, the PNTD is placed in close proximity to a sampling filter. The filter collects, from a calibrated air flow, all the daughter nuclei which are in suspension. As the daughter nuclei pass through the decay chain, through 214Po, a fraction of the 4He particles emitted are registered as latent tracks in the plastic. In passive devices, the PNTD is placed in direct contact with the ambient air containing the radio-nuclei concentrations to be determined. The active dosimeters have the advantage of excellent sensitivity, and the measured track densities yield very close approximations to accumulated Working Level (WL)** exposures. They have the disadvantage that the simplicity of the passive PNTD is lost, since a battery-driven constant flow-rate air pump is a necessity. The passive dosimeters are simple in construction and use, but they have the disadvantage that WL exposures are not directly measured and certain assumptions concerning radon and daughter equilibrium conditions must be made in determining WL exposures from the measured track densities. Also the sensitivities, in track densities per Working Level Hour (WLH) exposure, are much less than for active dosimeters. Dosimeters of both types have been investigated. Passive devices have been tested extensively both in the laboratory and in mines. Active devices have been laboratory tested. In our earlier measurements, cellulose nitrate plastic detectors were used exclusively, since this material had the highest sensitivity of the PNTD&apos;s then in use. When the properties of CR-39 plastic were discovered (Cartwright, 1978; Cassou and Benton, 1978), this material was used, where possible, to take advantage of its superior sensitivity. The results of our earlier work have previously been published (Frank and Benton, 1977). * Research sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Interior, under Contract No. JO-188003. ** A Working Level is defined as any combination of the short-lived radon daughters containing 1.3 x 105 MeV of potential 4He-particle energy per liter of ambient air. PASSIVE DOSIMETRY In the earliest testing of PNTD&apos;s for passive WL dosimetry, a single strip of cellulose nitrate plastic was used to determine the total cumulative 4He-particle activity in the air of simulated uranium mine and uranium mine environments (Rock, 1968; Rock [et al], 1969; White, 1969). The measurements yielded a close relationship between track densities and WL exposures in a controlled, static environment, but poor accuracy in the active mine tests. It was assumed that equilibrium differences contributed largely to the variations found. The response of PNTD&apos;s to airborne 4He-particle emitters, derived by Lovett (1969), demonstrated that detectors such as cellulose nitrate, which has a sensitivity cutoff at 4He-particle energies below the emission energies of radon and its daughters, are equally sensitive to the activity concentrations of radon, 218po(RaA) and 214Po(RaC&apos;). Since radon does not contribute to WL as it is defined, and since, under normal ventilated uranium mine conditions, the radon activity constitutes about 40% to 70% of the total 4He-particle activity, the WL exposures calculated from measured track densities are very sensitive to the particular radon daughter equilibrium conditions. Also, the detector does not weight the individual daughter activities in proportion to their importance to WL. The equation for WL is WL = 0.00103C2 + 0.00507C3 + 0.00373C4 (1) where C2, C3 and C4 are the activity concentrations of RaA, RaB and RaC-C&apos;, respectively, in pCi/[L]. The detector leaves C3 unmeasured and weights C2 and C4, equally. [This problem has been approached by Domanski et al (1975, 1979), for some non-uranium mines, by measuring equilibrium conditions throughout the mines to determine a mean value for A, the inverse of the Working Level Ratio (WLR = 100 WL where C1 is the activity of radon-222 in pCi/[L].) The distribution of values allowed Domanski to determine probable errors in calculating WL exposures from track densities. However, measurements of equilibrium conditions in U.S. uranium mines (Breslin et al, 1969; Holub and Droullard, 1978) indicate that this method would not be accurate enough for uranium miner personal dosimetry.] A two-element dosimeter was designed at our laboratory to compensate for equilibrium variations. The first element is a radon detector; the second is a detector for the total 4He-particle activity in the ambient air, just as in the single element dosimeters cited above. The addition of the radon detector allows the equilibrium conditions for the individual nuclei to be determined, given certain assumptions concerning the interrelationships between the nuclei concentrations in mine air. The two detectors and the problems involved in calculating WL exposures from their measurements are discussed below.

"The support pressure of a slurry shield corresponds to the in situ earth and groundwater pressure to ensure the stability of the tunnel face. The support fluid (bentonite suspension) penetrates from the excavation chamber into the pore space and transfers the support pressure to the granular structure of the soil within this zone. At the same time, the cutting tools rotate periodically with the cutting wheel and remove the penetrated soil up to a certain cutting depth at the face. Shortly after the tool passing, the penetration process starts again. Both, the support pressure and the soil excavation, act in the same direction at the tunnel face, but they are subject to different cyclic intervals. This relationship between the time needed for the transient penetration process and the interval of the cyclic passage of the cutting tools at a local point at the face is examined and the impact onto the global face stability is discussed. INTRODUCTION Slurry shields are usually deployed for excavations in soft ground. The main application range is in non-cohesive soils (DAUB Recommendations 2010). In non-cohesive granular soils, the tunnel face stability is one of the key design issues. The slurry shields make use of pressurized bentonite suspension (slurry) to support the unstable tunnel face. To support the tunnel face effectively, the slurry pressure has not only to counter the groundwater pressure, but also has to be transferred into an effective stress to support the soil grains. In general, the pressure transfer can be achieved in two ways: (1) with a thin flexible membrane or (2) a penetration zone. The membrane (1), called filter cake, creates a thin impermeable layer from bentonite particles directly on the tunnel face, and enables a transformation of excess slurry pressure into effective stress. In case of penetration zone formation (2), the excess slurry pressure is transferred onto the soil skeleton along the entire penetration depth by shear stresses between slurry and soil grains. These theories, presently applied to assess the pressure transfer on the grains within slurry shield tunnelling, are originating from diaphragm wall technology, e.g. Müller-Kirchenbauer (1977), Kilchert and Karstedt (1984). They assume that the support pressure transfer mechanism is built-up instantaneously on the whole tunnel face and is not damaged or influenced by the interaction with excavation tools. These assumptions are valid for conditions during the excavation of diaphragm wall trenches whose bottom is excavated and the walls of the trench are supported. At the tunnel face of a slurry shield, the support suspension acts on the same area as the soil excavation. Hence, the conditions on the tunnel face are transient (time dependent) due to the time period needed for the penetration process of the slurry and the periodical damage of the pressure transfer mechanism by excavation tools (Fig. 1a)."

INTRODUCTION Some of the most famous and graphic environmental incidents have arisen from mineral extraction, including oil spills, the Reserve Mining asbestos tailings case, Kaiparowitts surface mining and coal combustion, and other environmental causes celebre. The remote location of much of the mining industry to some extent reduces the human health hazards from pollution, but often times the pristine locale in which mining is conducted provides a sharp contrast to the impacting industry. This prompts questions as to what the research literature says about the true costs and benefits of environmental compliance. We survey the state of this knowledge. Where possible, we discuss studies focused on mining and related industries, such as primary metals production. In many cases, how- ever, the studies pertain to the economy as a whole. For present purposes, the mining industry is defined as companies engaged in the production and refinement of minerals, including metals, fuels, and nonmetallics (e.g., phosphate, sand and gravel). There are several stages in mining, with environmental effects occuring at every stage. The exploration stage comprises the period from initial prospecting to the point where the deposit has been located and delineated in sufficient detail to permit development decisions to be made. Geophysical and geochemical surveys, diamond drilling programs, and exploratory stripping and excavation are activities that may be employed during this stage. Some forms of prospecting are relatively benign, al- though even airborne surveys and motor vehicles generate noise pollution. Roads and the passage of vehicles and equipment affect land surfaces and vegetation, and attract heavier backcountry use. Clearings, stream crossings, and borrow pits can lead to increased erosion and sedimentation of streams. Geological survey grids disrupt vegetation and appearance. Moreover, prospecting can involve the excavation and stripping of overburden, resulting in soil and vegetation disruption as well as in- creased sedimentation of streams and lakes. The effects of exploration are often temporary, and frequently less severe than for other activities. Nevertheless, exploration-related impacts vary with the intensity and type of exploration effort, and can be significant. During the development stage of mining, shafts are sunk, pits excavated, buildings erected, and transportation facilities established. Dust, noise, and other socioeconomic and environmental impacts are generated by the relatively large and sudden influx of people, equipment, and activity. Surface disturbance and solid waste are generated by development, and liquid wastes form when mines are dewatered. The extraction phase is associated with a variety of environmental impacts. These impacts may differ for surface and underground mines. In surface mining, surface disturbance is obviously a major consequence. Piles of overburden and waste accumulation mar land surfaces. "The authors have proposed a unique methodology in the evaluation of rock mass stiffness for the range of five to twenty meters ahead of the tunnel face, with the use of small diameter inclinometers. The inclinometers are installed at the tunnel crown at a pre-determined constant interval, about one meter behind the face in order to obtain the slight change in inclination angles during tunnel excavation. This method was developed as a daily control measurement such that the geological condition and its possible change ahead of the face could be detected early by monitoring the trend of inclination angles. This paper describes the results of the ground stiffness ahead of the tunnel face evaluated at a mountain tunnel construction site. This stiffness is evaluated automatically and displayed visually by the current system equipped with a result display screen, together with a warning message against a weak zone when detected. 1. INTRODUCTION In a conventional planning of a mountain tunnel, according to the Japanese Standard (JSCE, 2006) seismic refraction surveys from the ground surface are performed and tunnel support patterns are then designed based on the seismic wave velocity. The resolution of the velocity profile estimated by this technique, however, is poor as the tunnel overburden becomes large. The tunnel face is therefore often encountered by unforeseeable fault zones or weak rocks. Such an unpredictable weak zone occasionally causes the collapse of the tunnel face. Clarifying the forward geological information during excavation is hence significant for safe and well-controlled construction. According to the geological conditions ahead of a face, auxiliary methods typified by forepiling and face bolting could be preliminarily prepared for prompt execution. For the purpose of acquiring forward geological information, pilot borehole drilling and seismic reflection methods represented by the TSP (Tunnel Seismic Prediction) or HSP (Horizontal Seismic Profiling) are often applied. Those exploration are carried out near the tunnel face for a couple of days. This often leads to the interruption of excavation procedure and has no small effect on the construction schedule. On the other hand, some forward ground prediction methods in the daily control measurement have been developed e.g. by Schubert et al. (1995). In this method, tunnel displacements in the direction of the tunnel axis are used together with the crown settlements. We have tested their method at a few of our tunnel projects and found difficulty in the evaluation of the forward ground condition due to insufficient resolution of the axial displacement measured by a total station theodolite that we usually use for the tunnel measurement. We have therefore developed a novel methodology of monitoring slight inclination at the tunnel crown near the face, so that the forward ground conditions can be predicted and evaluated as part of a routine measurement procedure."

INTRODUCTION Although sampling techniques used by the mineral industry continue to improve, sampling is still an area which is often neglected. Frequently, sampling and sample preparation requirements are left to personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of sampling. Consequently, plant evaluations are often based on seriously biased samples, leading to mass balance problems and incorrect assessments of plant performance. The basic rule for correct sampling is that each particle of ore or concentrate must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. If this is not the case, bias is easily introduced and the sample is not representative. For example, when ore is travelling on a conveyor belt, the lumps may come to the surface. Consequently, a grab sample taken from the top layers only will contain a greater proportion of lumps, i.e., the sample is biased. There seems little point in making major investments in precise analytical equipment, if the sample provided to the analytical laboratory is not representative in the first place. This paper describes the sources of plant sampling errors, reviews the methods of estimating their variance, presents some worked examples, and provides some practical advice for reducing sampling errors and their variance. SAMPLING BASICS It is generally accepted that the discharge point of an ore or concentrate stream is the most suitable sampling location. The stream can be intersected at regular intervals, and representative samples, referred to as increments, can be obtained by taking a complete cross-section of the ore stream. On the other hand, sampling devices that take part of the stream on an intermittent or continuous basis, e.g., a bleed from a pipe, may introduce serious bias, and should be avoided at all cost. Increments may be taken at completely random times or tonnages during the sampling operation, in which case it is called "random sampling". However, as shown below, random sampling results in the largest sampling variance, so it is preferable to divide the ore or concentrate stream up into strata of equal time or mass and take one increment from each stratum. This operation is called stratified sampling and may be either systematic sampling, in which increments are taken at the same point in each stratum, or stratified random sampling in which the increments are taken at random within each stratum. Systematic sampling results in the smallest sampling variance, provided periodic variations in quality or quantity are not present which may coincide with, or approximate to, any multiples of the proposed sampling interval. In such cases, it is strongly recommended that stratified random sampling within fixed time or mass intervals be carried out.

"Stringent regulations and increased arsenic presence in ore bodies being exploited have created the need for cost effective and environmentally compliant technologies to remove selenium and arsenic from mine waters and metallurgical waste streams. Existing treatment methods have high life cycle costs and/or produce residues that, due to their unknown stability over the long-term, may represent future liabilities. This results in high compliance costs and uncertainties which negatively impact existing operations and projects in permitting. Selen-IX™ is a new ion exchange based process that selectively removes selenium from mine impacted waters down to 1 ppb while producing a stable inorganic iron-selenium product. Results of piloting completed on streams generated from coal and copper-gold deposits are presented along with preliminary equipment sizing and life cycle costs of full scale treatment. An example of a commercially available system for arsenic removal using sulphide precipitation is presented. The benefit of this treatment method is discussed based on recently completed technical feasibility assessment including laboratory testing and preliminary engineering design. INTRODUCTION Selenium Due to the chemical similarity between selenium and sulfur, selenium substitutes sulfur in many minerals that can be found in a wide range of deposits including coal, base metal, precious metal, phosphate, and uranium. One of the main environmental challenges facing the industry in North America today is related to the removal of hexavalent selenium, e.g. selenate, to ultralow levels, typically between 1 to 10 ppb, from large flows of often cold water containing less than 1,000 ppb of selenium. Recent studies commissioned by the industry identified biological selenium reduction systems as the best available technology. Although the biological selenium reduction process is commercially proven in certain applications to remove selenium to ultralow discharge levels, the technology has been primarily applied to relatively low and constant flows of warm water produced by the Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers in the power generation industry. The wide spread adoption of this treatment method by the mining industry is hindered by high capital and operating costs associated with treating large flows of cold water, lack of data and knowledge about the long term stability of solid residues produced by this treatment, and limited capacity of biological systems to respond to sudden changes in flow and/or mass load of contaminants. Furthermore, it has been reported that reaching discharge limits less than 3 ppb could be a challenge and that polishing treatment for the removal of BOD and phosphate maybe required to avoid the impact of the biological treatment which requires organics and nutrients, on aquatic environment downstream of treatment plants. Alternate treatment systems are being developed to overcome and/or completely avoid some of the challenges of biological systems. One such treatment system is BioteQ’s Selen-IX™ process which is purely physico-chemical treatment system."

Climate change presents risks to mine infrastructure, operations and long-term obligations to protect environmental conditions. Management strategies and design of infrastructure and containment systems based on past or current climate conditions may be inadequate in the future if changes in climate are not taken into account in planning for mine operations, decommissioning, closure and post-closure. Data-driven assessments using climate model projections of the future can be used to quantify: • Changes in site-specific risks to mine structures, access, containment facilities, operations and staff safety. • Changes in vegetation and water balance/chemistry, and potential for acid mine drainage, erosion and design failure. Climate- and weather-related risks are a serious threat to the mining industry, but risk transfer solutions can alleviate these vulnerabilities. Mining companies can protect themselves through bespoke solutions which provide operators, investors and buyers with protection against weather-related disruptions to operations by hedging to smooth revenues. Using risk transfer structures to mitigate climate risks is a mechanism that is available to all types of mining operations world-wide. In this paper, we describe methods for evaluating site-specific climate change impacts and developing risk transfer solutions to mitigate their effects. EVALUATING MINE RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE The best available tool for understanding potential future changes to the earth’s climate system are global climate models (GCMs) (IPCC, 2014). GCMs are computer simulations of the climate system which include the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, cryosphere and biosphere. Because of the computational demands of running a global model for many decades, the spatial resolutions of the GCM grids are necessarily coarse, typically on the order of 100-300 km. GCM data are therefore suitable for evaluating future physical risks on global or continental scales, but may not be appropriate for evaluating location-specific risks (e.g. Kotamarthi et al., 2016). For site-specific, quantitative physical risk assessment, GCM projection data are “downscaled” or adapted for use at the local level using statistical techniques together with observed data (statistical downscaling) or using high-resolution regional climate models (RCMs) that focus on a single geographic region and have spatial resolutions of 10-50 km (dynamical downscaling). Downscaling bridges the gap between the GCM scale and regional/local scale. Through the downscaling process, new information is added to the GCM output from observations and/or RCMs, resulting in patterns for weather variables that are more consistent with local terrain and weather influences. Downscaled climate change projections for the mine site are selected considering mine location and geography, the availability of local observations, and the performance of the downscaling method and global/regional models used to develop the projection in simulating the variable under study. Where possible, we use projections from an ensemble of global and regional model runs spanning a range of future greenhouse gas (GHG) scenarios.

"The execution of classical building services in underground mining operations is more truth than myth. From small concrete foundations for conveyor belts to the construction of huge workshops for large machinery maintenance, nearly every operation requires building services. By creating such fixed facilities, these services ensure the efficiency of the production. A distinction must be made between fixed facilities which directly enable the production and auxiliary facilities which only indirectly support the production. The construction costs of such auxiliary facilities are often roughly estimated because they do not immediately contribute to mineral extraction. The research project ‘Development of a systematic cost-calculation method for building services in underground mines’ seeks to address the question: ‘Can the construction costs concerning fixed auxiliary facilities be neglected e.g. within a prefeasibility study?’ The presentation will show the monetary relevance and significance of these auxiliary facilities and introduce a guideline for cost estimators. PROBLEM DEFINITION The overriding interest of an underground mining operator is to exploit the commodity with the maximal quality by minimum cost and time expenditure. If a new operation shall be installed, it has to promise profitability. Therefore, predictive economic feasibility studies are performed in advance of installation. Herein, all cost expenditure for installation and operation of the future underground mine is determined and compared to the expected income by selling the raw material. The described interest of the mining operator is the starting point of the research project ‘Development of a systematic cost-calculation method for building services in underground mines’. While economic feasibility studies for future operations are focused on the profitable exploitation of raw materials and the efficiency of the accompanying necessary production processes, auxiliary actions are only considered rudimentary. Necessary production processes, as well as auxiliary actions regularly require classical building services, which are normally performed in construction business on the surface in the same manner. By performing building services like masonry or concrete works in underground mines, fixed facilities shall be set up in order to enable or support the raw material production. Production enabling fixed facilities are varying from small concrete foundations for conveyor belts or other infrastructural elements to upstream processing plants situated in the mine workings. While such fixed facilities are essential parts of the production process chain, supporting facilities underground shall increase the efficiency of the mining operation. Workshops, control rooms and social installations are only a few examples for supporting facilities. Those could be situated on the surface as well, but the efficiency increases significantly by installing them underground. Especially supporting facilities are evading from the main interest of the mine operator, since they are only indirectly connected to the production process. The building costs are oftentimes only roughly assumed."

"Wireframe construction is an integral part of resource estimation. Wireframes control domaining of samples and data for geostatistical analysis and grade estimation. They may also provide 3D representations of lithology and grade domains. Thus, the way in which a wireframe is constructed has implications throughout the resource estimation process. Proper construction technique and understanding of wireframing processes should be a high priority in a model workflow. Herein is presented an overview of two main categories of wireframes: implicit and explicit. Construction differences between these two types are highlighted. Factors affecting the choice between the two wireframe types will be discussed, including data quantity, data distribution, and sampling technique. Deposit geometry also plays an important part in wireframe construction. The role of geologic knowledge, cross section orientation, and deposit type in regards to wireframe construction will be discussed. The effect of wireframe type on resource estimation will be examined. Finally, best practices for creating meaningful solids that contribute to a reasonable grade estimation are outlined. INTRODUCTION Wireframes are essential to many types of resource estimations. They provide a way to delineate a deposit into various domains. Domaining can be done by lithologic or geologic units, structures or structural zones, or by grade. Domaining is important for geostatistical analysis and grade estimation of a deposit. The purpose of domaining is to analyze and estimate like data with like. Grade distribution patterns may vary by lithology or by proximity to or existence within structural zones. Properly constructed wireframes are therefore a fundamental necessity to a properly executed geostatistical analysis and resource estimation model. The choices made in construction of wireframes have a trickle-down effect on the entire model and should be made according to best practices for the deposit type at hand.TYPES OF WIREFRAMES Explicit The term “explicit wireframe” is used in this paper to indicate wireframes that are constructed by the modeler. This usually involves the modeler drawing the wireframes “by hand”, e.g. still utilizing some sort of computer aided drawing software, but with the modeler making all decisions about the size, shape, and positon of the wireframe. These wireframes are drawn based on some type of key variable that the modeler determines is important to their system. Often, this key variable may be a lithologic unit that controls mineralization, an observable structural zone, or a grade cutoff. Explicit wireframes are generally constructed as a series of shapes drawn on 2D planes or cross sections that are then connected into a 3D shape. Figure 1 shows an example of an explicit wireframe that was drawn based on a grade cutoff on 2D sections (Figure 1a), then joined into a 3D shape (Figure 1b)."
