The Mining Division of Utah Power and Light Company is located in the coal fields of southeastern Utah -main office in Huntington, Utah. The Division will produce 6.5 million tons of low sulfur steam coal in 1988, making UP&L the largest underground mining operation west of the Mississippi. Coal is mined from three underground mines utilizing continuous miner and longwall mining methods. All coal produced by the Mining Division is utilized at UP&L's two largest steam-electric power plants, the Hunter and Huntington plants with a combined capability of 1,995,000 Kw. At UP&L we believe that to achieve success a company must have clearly defined goals which are understood, communicated and shared at each level of operation. We have also found from experience that a safe operation is generally an efficient and productive operation. As a Division, we have established a goal to achieve the safest, most efficient operation in the country. This is an ambitious goal. To achieve such a goal requires real commitment and a safety/training program capable of achieving needed results. The following is an overview of the program we have established at UP&L which has enabled us to reduce our accident frequency rate from over 40 in 1980 to 8.00 at present, as illustrated in Figure 1.

To put coal in its proper perspective as a source of energy for electric power production, we must first compare it to other energy sources. A report of the Atomic Industrial Forum dated February 1958 records a number of authoritative though widely varying predictions. The most optimistic of these states that by 1968 there will be a total U.S. capacity of about 6000 megawatts of nuclear power, if growth continues at the present rate. Other sources indicate over 200,000 megawatts of total electrical capacity in utility plants by 1968. This is only 3% nuclear. Therefore, 97% of our total power production will be from non-nuclear energy. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of energy sources of electric utility product- ion in the U.S. as reported by the Federal Power Commission in 1954. Note that less than one quarter of the total is hydro and about one half of the total is coal. For 1957, the Edison Electric Institute reports that of the total steam- electric generation in the U. S., 68.6% was by coal, 7.9% was by oil and 23.5% was by gas. This is an increase for coal and a decrease for oil and gas in those three years. Thus we can conclude that two-thirds of the steam-electric power in the U. S. is now generated by coal. Fig. 2 shows the major markets for coal for 1947 vs 1957. The greatest in- crease has been in the electric utility market, where it has more than doubled in the ten years. One-third of the total coal produced goes to the utilities which now represent coal?s major market. Utilities used 160 million tons of coal in 1957, and the estimated quantity for 1967 is 275 million tons, and for 1977 is 525 million tons. It is predicted that 85% of steam-electric power will be generated by coal in 1975.

One of the major criterion of any mechanised tunnelling operation is to minimize downtime of the tunnelling machine by employing the most efficient muck handling system space and economic factors permit. A tunnelling machine which remains idle during a large percentage of the available shift working time is a luxury no contractor can afford. There are several possible reasons for non-productivity of a tunnelling machine ... the inability of the muck handling system to keep pace with the tunnelling machine on a continuous basis is one major cause. In large diameter tunnels, where several trains or more than one muck hauling unit can operate simultaneously, downtime of the tunnelling machine may be kept to an acceptable level. On small to medium diameter tunnels, 8 feet to 14 feet in diameter, the muck removal support system is normally restricted in capacity, resulting in an excessive tunnelling machine downtime as the tunnel extends from the shaft. There is a need for an efficient, continuous and economical muck removal system for small to medium size tunnels being driven by a hard rock machine. This paper is intended to provide an insite into pneumatic conveying, and explain the Radmark System; its development and utilisation in the tunnelling and mining fields. TRANSMANCHE-LINK is responsible for designing, developing and implementing the project for a fixed link under the English Channel, comprising two running tunnels of diameter 7.6 metres and a service tunnel of diameter 4.8 metres. The three tunnels will all be 50 km long, with 37 km bored through chalk marl at a depth of 40 metres under the sea bed. The tunnels will be driven from both sides of the channel from intermediate addits above the coastline on either side with a 55 m access shaft at Sangatte in France and two "descenderies" or inclined tunnels addits and a shaft at Shakespeare Cliff on the English side. A total of eleven tunnel boring machines will drive the 150 km of tunnels. The major part of the tunnel linings will be built of precast reinforced concrete segments, and two plants have been specially built to produce the necessary 725,000 segments. Seven million cubic metres will be evacuated on wagons along the tunnels and then lifted by belt conveyor on the English side, and by hydraulic mucking from the bottom on the French side. Preliminary work started early in 1987 with manufacture of the first boring machines, construction of five precasting plants, boring of the Sangatte shaft in preparation of the Shakespeare Cliff entrances. The benefits of historic mining to this country have been many, but have come at a cost to the environment that has only begun to be understood over the past twenty years. While estimates vary, it is generally recognized that there are over 200,000 inactive and abandoned hardrock mines, with most of them located in the western U.S. Only a fraction of them are believed to be sources of metal releases with significant adverse environmental effects to the watersheds and receiving streams. State water-quality and natural resource management agencies have noted that hundreds of miles of streams are metal-impacted, and the aggregate effects of these sites within watersheds and drainage basins is poorly understood. Resources for the environmental assessment of abandoned mine land (AML) sites and watersheds have been and continue to be limited. Few hardrock mining states receive substantial reclamation funds under the (coal) Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. EPA Region VIII (EPA8) has an estimated 90,000 abandoned mining, milling and smelter sites, mainly in Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. An estimated 13,000 of the sites may have metal releases causing Clean Water Act and CERCLA non-compliance. Results of inventories by states and federal land managing agencies, indicate it is plausible that only 3,000-4,000 of these sites may be causing significant environmental degradation.

Bergbau AG Niederrhein, a subsidiary of Ruhrkohle AG; Essen, Germany, is working coal mines on both sides of the Rhine River. The Prosper Mine in the City of Bottrop has a production of about 13,000 tons per day and has been in operation since the turn of the century. Mining has moved to the north as coal deposits south of Bottrop are exhausted. To facilitate ventilation, material handling, and transportation new shafts are being constructed in the northern coal fields. The Prosper 10 shaft is being sunk to develop the Prosper - Haniel coal field which has reserves of 280 million tons. In October, 1976 Bergbau AG Niederrhein awarded the shaft sinking contract for the 1047 m deep, 8 m inside diameter Prosper 10 shaft to Gewerkschaft Walter; Essen, Germany. Construction costs will amount to about 40 million DM with construction completion scheduled for 1981. GEOLOGY The shaft, located near the town of Kirchhellen north Bottrop, is being sunk in the Grafenwalder Horst between two faults on the south west flank of the Kirchheller Anticline. 270 m of upper cretaceus sands and marls overlay sandstone bedrock at the shaft location. The upper 124 m of this section contain highly saturated sands interspersed with marl. In order to successfully sink the shaft through this section, ground stabilization by freezing was used.

Kennecott's Ray mine is located about 145 km (90 miles) north of Tucson in the Mineral Creek mining district of central Arizona. Mining in the district started in the late 1800's. The Ray mine itself was first mined by under- ground methods in 1911 and was changed to an open-pit operation in 1952. Mineralization is complex and includes sulfide, silicate, and native copper mineralization, as well as minor amounts of molybdenite. Sulfide ore, mined at Ray, is shipped by rail to Kennecott's concentrator and smelter at Hayden, 32 km (20 miies) away. Silicate ore, mostly chrysocolla, is processed near the mine in a vat leaching-electro- winning plant. The mine consists of two sulfide areas: (1) the West pit and the Central pit (the original Pearl Handle pit) and (2) a silicate area on the northeast perimeter of the Central pit. The pit now is over 304 m (1000 ft) deep and approximately 3048 m (10,000 ft) long. Roads within the ultimate pit are limited to a grade of 10%, while those outside the pit are limited to 8%. The mining equipment consists of 40 Wabco 1094 (120-st) haulage trucks [ranging from 109 to 227 t (120 to 250 st)], 12 electric shovels [ranging from 6 to 23 m (7 to 25 yd)], and 3 11-m (12-yd) Dart production loaders.

This study deals with the mineralogical-geochemical characteristics and the industrial usage of the olivine from the dunites that crop out on the west of the Topuk village (Orhaneli). Mineralogical compositions of non-altered dunite samples are averagely as: Olivine (>90%), serpentine (1-4 %), opaque minerals especially chromite, magnetite, pyrite (1-3 %), and secondary minerals as magnesite, chlorite (1-2 %). X-Ray Diffractograms of the dunite samples indicate that olivines are in forsterite (93 on an average) composition, and chlinochrysotile and lizardite accompany to the forsterite. Chemical analyses of the dunites show that MgO, SiO2, Fe-,03 and LOI contents vary from 40,99 to 50,2 %, 34,67 to 40,6 %, 6,8 tol3,7 %, 0,11 to 11,27 %, respectively. SE-TAT Mining Company states that the study area has 400.000.000 tonnes proved, 800.000.000 tonnes probable and totally 1.200.000.000 tonnes olivine reserve. Consequently, all studies indicate that Orhaneli Olivin has convenient mineralogical and chemical properties and the grain size (0.04-40 mm) for industrial usages such as abrasive, olivine sand products, steel slag conditioner, balast and covering material in industry: Orhaneli olivines are demanded especially from the firms related to refractory industry, iron-steel factories, naval forces and shipyards. SE-TAT Mining Company also exports these olivines to different countries such as Macedonian and Spain.

CalMat Co. is one of the largest producers of construction aggregates in the United States. The CalMat Reliance plant is located in Irwindale, California, and is situated on an alluvial fan formed by the San Gabriel River. The fan deposits are of Quaternary age and were derived from granitic and metamorphic bedrock exposed in the San Gabriel Mountains to the north. The sediments are poorly sorted and range in size from large boulders to clay size particles. The coarse material is hard and durable and consists of quartz diorite, granodiorite, granitic gneiss, schist and minor amounts of volcanic rock. The matrix is comprised of silty sand with varying amounts of clay. Thin silt and clay lenses occur sporadically throughout the deposit. The clay content of the matrix and the degree of weathering of the coarse material increases with depth. Based on seismic data, the alluvial fan varies from 200 to 400 feet thick and overlies crystalline bedrock. The Reliance plant was constructed in 1971 and 1972. It has a nominal capacity of 1200 to 1400 tons per hour, and typically produces more than three million tons of aggregate products per year. Alluvial fan sediments are mined from a gravel pit situated adjacent to the plant. The material is fed through a mobile, 48- by 60-inch, in-pit jaw crusher, then transported by conveyor to the main plant to be processed. The plant is modern and highly efficient. It has a typical wet and dry circuit and is capable of producing a wide range of aggregate products. To extend the life of the plant, a 9,000 foot conveyor system is being constructed to connect it to a granite quarry operated by Azusa Rock Inc. The quarry is located north of Irwindale, and is 50 percent owned by CalMat Co. The conveyor will be used to export crushed rock from the quarry to Reliance. The existing plant will be modified to process the crushed rock.

Discussion by P. Malozemoff I have no objection to using mathematics in the value appraisal of properties. The factor that is not emphasized in the paper is that very few important properties have a lifetime that reflects the initial ore reserves of the property divided by the rate of production adopted. In the majority of cases, major properties mine out several times the initial reserves. How much more will be mined out is not known, and only exceptionally gifted geologists can predict that additional reserves will be found. There is the further factor of metals price, which, over the long term, is not predictable. Another factor vitiating making calculations on initially established ore reserves is the speculative nature of exploration success. In my judgment, the life of a property, in addition to an established ore reserve, should include ample time for exploration to find additional reserves. The likelihood of additional reserves is based on the geological promise of the general area where the mine is established. This is especially important because of various risk factors associated with small orebodies, the economic life of which is about five to seven years. In underground mines, it is not economic to develop reserves beyond a certain depth, so the life of initially established reserves must be limited. In these cases, it is especially important to have a good geological understanding of the orebody and its continuity. To accommodate these concepts and present proof of economic soundness for a mining enterprise, a mathematical analysis should yield a life long enough to allow exploration and the development of additional reserves that would ensure a longer mine life and a more profitable result.

The underground fire areas are formed as a result of failure of an active fire extinguishing in mines. Such areas bring about a fire hazard for the work safety and for the mining operations. For liquidation of fire areas it is necessary to create conditions under which a possibly small amount of air is flowing to the fire. To achieve this end, isolation methods are used which consist in erection of full stoppings of various types, sealing practically the fire areas. These methods usually fail in oases when the coal seam is thick and the fire area is situated between the intake shaft and the outtake shaft in which a high-pressure fan is in operation. In such oases ventilation methods based on the balance of aerodynamic potentials in fire areas are to be used. For a very long time the isolation and ventilation methods have been developed in the world mining, No sooner than since 1980 the aerodynamic potential has been used in ventilation methods [1,2,6]. So far, the aerodynamic potential was called in different ways and was determined by different formulae which gave its numerical values more or less approximative. Nevertheless, even in situations featuring by a lack of sufficient theoretical bases of the aerodynamic potential the ventilation methods brought considerable profits in the field of safety in mines and of economics in mine ventilation [1-6,9,10]. The increase in the depth of underground mines and their equipment with expensive machines (apparatus) brought about that the Central Mining Institute at Katowice undertook research works which are crowned by the theory of the aerodynamic potential in mine ventilation networks [7]. The use of this theory in the mentioned ventilation methods will increase their effectiveness. Since the theory will be published in the III rd quarter of this year, we cite in the present paper the formulae and relations associated with this theory which are indispensable to present the balance of aerodynamic potentials in the fire areas in their control by ventilation methods.

A new face ventilation system was needed at the Allied Chemical Trona mine, near Green River, Wyoming. The development of an exhaust manifold face ventilation system came from a need to reduce the dust and noise concentration level while maintaining methane control at the continuous miner working face. Dust laden air from a heading being driven by a continuous miner was contaminating the intake air in the mine around the roof bolter operator and adjacent headings. Each working heading was exhausted into the last open crosscut by a face fan. A face fan would contaminate the adjacent downstream heading with dust-laden air until a high dust concentration developed in the final entry before the returns. A face ventilation system was needed to give the exhaust of each heading an individual path to the return air. In addition, the system could not interfere with the present room and pillar mining process. A manifold system of rigid duct ventilation tubing was designed using the existing fans in a parallel arrangement. Each system was to consist of the rigid duct tubing in three headings junctioned together at the last open crosscut and exhausted at a common branch in the return air. Each heading was to have its own damper (or valve) so that air could be directed where it was most needed. The system was installed using both round and oval rigid duct ventilation tubing to minimize head loss and to allow proper ground clearance for mining machinery. Two fans in parallel were used to exhaust three headings. By adjusting the valves at each heading, up to 18.0 kcfm (9.36 cu m per sec) could be exhausted from one heading and still keep the methane level controlled in the other two headings. The manifold exhaust system has proven to be an efficient, long lasting ventilation system at the Alchem Mine. It has reduced the dust and noise exposure levels at the working faces while keeping the methane level under control.

"INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground excavation is related to handling of uncertainties, risks associated with geological conditions are significant and ‘unexpected geological conditions’ often claimed. This fact was brought to the table long ago, and ITA (the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association) published its 25 Recommendations on Contractual Sharing of Risks in 1988 (Ref. 1). This public-cation constitutes an important asset to the tunneling industry in terms of being a guideline for those working with contractual issues, even today almost 30 years after being published. A more recent document is the ITIG code of practice for risk management of tunnel works from 2015 (Ref. 9). Various countries or geographical regions have their own view and tradition on risk sharing and tunnel contracts. In Scandinavia unit rates contracts are most commonly used with bid-build model, it shares risk between owner and contractor, owner retains the risk for geological conditions while contractor carries risk for performance efficiency. Rock strengthening is determined assessing rock mass quality encountered at tunnel face. Grouting is applied to stem water. Actual quantities may differ from the contract’s BoQ but a flexible contract with remuneration is installed to enable adjustment of actual quantities. Variations of quantities involve a clause to adjust construction time. Unit price contracts deals with expected and foreseen still ‘unexpected geological conditions’, if the ‘unexpected’ element results in variations in quantities. Work activities have quantities and ‘standard capacities’ for regulation of construction time. Variations in quantities are expected in tunnelling and hardly deserve the term ‘unexpected’. If truly unforeseen geological features necessitate work not included in the BoQ, then the contract must be supplemented and can be said to be inappropriate. Fixed price contracts may not provide the intended predictable cost and is as such also inappropriate in the view of a risk sharing principle, once the geological baseline proves to be incorrect. ‘Adjustable fixed price’ contracts, combining unit rate and fixed price, may prove suitable."

In a recent speech in Pittsburgh, Dr. George Keyworth, the President's Science Advisor, made a statement which I believe deserves our very careful consideration. Dr. Keyworth said that there is no energy crisis. The crisis, he explained, is simply that people refuse to accept the solution. The solution which Dr. Keyworth has in mind is increased utilization of our abundant supplies of solid fuels and, in particular, uranium. I share his view concerning the solution to our energy needs. The use of uranium fuel is a safe, clean, and dependable means to generate our electric power. It is time that we addressed the real energy crisis: the refusal to accept the nuclear solution. The reason for the refusal is not difficult to find. It is nihilistic thinking about risk. Under this thinking, we assume the worst possible case and act accordingly, simply because we cannot prove to a total certainty that nuclear energy is perfectly safe. If this absolutist approach were generally applied throughout our society, there is no doubt all of us would soon be sitting around our campfires fearfully holding the wild animals at bay with our trusty spears. Today I am here to enlist your support in reversing the regulatory trend that threatens the very extistence of the nuclear power industry. As distinguished scientists, engineers and businessmen, you can use your influence to help bring rational regulation to the industry. Our industry supports strong safety and environmental protection programs. We understand the need for and do not object to reasonable regulation. Many anti-pollution measures can be practical to implement, cost effective and highly successful in minimizing environmental impacts. However, it is a fact of life that in the field of health and safety regulation, the law of diminishing returns operates with a vengeance. Absolute or near-absolute safety is impossible and any attempt to achieve it is intolerably costly. Fixation on absolute safety is particularly acute in the regulation of the nuclear power industry. Government Agencies, overly anxious to allay the irrational fears of those opposed to nuclear power, are literally regulating the industry to death - exactly the result sought by the anti-nuclear groups. Dr. Robert L. DuPont wrote in a recent issue of [Business Week]: "The nuclear power industry has been virtually stopped in the U.S. [because of fear]. This is true despite the fact that for more than 20 years the commercial nuclear industry has operated under unprecedented public health scrutiny and that to date there have been no radiation-related injuries, let alone deaths, suffered by any member of the public."1 I believe a useful way to convey the nature of the problem faced by the nuclear industry is to review an example of [unreasonable] regulation. While the example relates to our domestic industry, I am certain there are similar situations in other countries. For the example I will use the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's recently issued regulations governing the stabilization of uranium mill tailings.2 These regulations, known as the Uranium Mill Licensing Requirements, specify, among other things, that radon emanation from uranium mill tailings be limited to no more than 2 pCi/m2-sec. First, one must understand that this standard will have virtually no impact on the total amount of radon to which the public is exposed. Radon emitted from even completely unstabilized tailings piles is a tiny fraction--much less than 1%--of the amount of radon released from natural soils in the United States.3 In fact, it is far outweighed by natural variations in the background flux. For example, changes in the level of the Great Salt Lake in recent years have had [eight times] as much effect on the amount of radon released into the Salt Lake City regional air than the annual release from the Vitro Mill tailings pile located in that city.4 Nevertheless, NRC claims that the standard is required to protect the public. The Commission admits, however, that there are no studies which establish that exposure to radon at the low levels associated with uranium mill tailings will result in any adverse health effects.5 In the absence of actual evidence, the Commission assumes that some such effects will occur on the basis of the linear, non-threshold model.6 Employing this model, NRC calculates that the maximum hypothetical risk for the average member of the population is only about 1 in 70,000,000 from the radon that would be emitted from [three times] the number of mills now in existence, even if the tailings produced through the year 2000 are left unstabilized.7 NRC has elsewhere explained that this level of risk would be equivalent to the risk posed by "a few puffs on a cigarette, a few sips of wine, driving the family car about 6 blocks, flying about 2 miles, canoeing for 3 seconds, or being a man age 60 for 11 seconds." This level of risk is [de minimis] in comparison to other risks commonly and readily incurred in our society.9 Moreover, even this remote risk is overstated. A group of prominent health physicists, including experts from the Department of Energy, The Environmental Protection Agency, Britain, Canada and Germany recently published a study indicating that the risk to the public per unit exposure to radon can be no greater than one-third that suggested by the Commission, and [may in fact be zero].l0 Regulators routinely rationalize the need for their regulations. For example, NRC attempts to justify the radon flux standard because it is necessary to reduce the risk to someone who builds a house on top of a tailings pile. This possibility, however, is totally unrealistic because the Mill Tailings Act requires that stabilized tailings be transferred to

Hargett Dear Dr. Hanna: As discussed in our phone conversation, we are enclosing a suggested revision to the paper, "Application of Bentonitic Clays in Suspension Fertilizer Formulations," published in MINERAL & METALLURGICAL PROCESSING, May 1990. The revision will replace the second paragraph in the article. The reason for the revision is that suspensions have decreased in market share since 1984 and at present comprise an estimated 25% to 30% of fluid mixtures. This represents 6% to 7% of all fluids and only 2% to 3% percent of all fertilizers. Based on national surveys conducted by the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO), suspensions comprised an estimated 25% of all fluid mixtures in 1974, 33% in 1976, 35% in 1980, 40% in 1984, and 36% in 1988. Revision to "Application of Bentonitic Clays in Suspension Fertilizer Formulations." Suspension fertilizers are an important segment of the fertilizer industry in the United States. Suspensions allow higher concentrations of nutrients (N, P2O5, K2O) than clear liquid solution fertilizers. K20 content of solutions is limited to about 10%, while suspensions can contain more than 30% K2O. Suspensions can tolerate greater variations in temperature than solutions. In suspensions, if crystallization occurs, the crystals can remain suspended in a clay jell instead of settling as they would in solutions. Solubility is not a limiting factor in suspensions, since complete solubility of phosphate is not required. This allows a wider range of phosphate materials to be used. Also, materials commonly used in formulating suspensions are less expensive and more widely available than those for clear liquids (Getsiner et al., 1984).

The dissolution of gold in cyanide_ leaching has been we11 published with the genera1 acceptance that gold is oxidised by oxygen and stabilized by complexation with cyanide [1]. The dissolution of gold is essentially an electrochemical process. The rate of the anodic gold dissolution is controlled by the cyanide concentration. - (2) While the cathode reduction of oxygen is controlled by dissolved oxygen concentration - (3) There are a number of factors influencing the concentration of oxygen, and if 1owered substanth.lly will effect the efficiency of the leaching plant. These include: "' salinity "' temperature "'partial pressure "'oxygen consumption rate The use of pure oxygen for· cyanidation is only beneficial if oxygen is rate limiting, Conversely a slurry saturated with air (typically 5 - 8 ppm) may not be enough for maximum leach rate. The diagram below shows the maximum dissolved oxygen levels obtainable with pure oxygen and air. DISSOLVED OXYGEN (MAXIMUM) IN WATER At steady state, the rate of the cathodic reaction must equal the rate of the anodic reaction. Thus the rate of gold dissolution is dependent on both the· cyanide and oxygen concentrations. - (4) Using an average of Do/Den =· 1.5 [2] (where Do and Den are the oxygen and cyanide diffusion coefficients) the table below illustrates the maximum effective oxygen concentrations for given cyanide levels in clean water [3].

A large portion of the public lands in the United States is managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Public lands administered by the BLM comprise about 39 per cent (270 million acres) of the entire Federal surface estate or about 1/8 of the surface of the United States. Most of this land, located in the 11 Western States, including Alaska, is available for mineral exploration and development. The BLM is a multiple-use land management agency responsible for the balanced management of the public lands and their resources. The BLM's task is to ensure the balanced and sustainable development of the public lands and resources. This task translates into the management of people and their use of the public resources. As a result, the BLM manages a diverse group of programs including recreation, range lands, timber lands, fish and wildlife habitat, watershed, wilderness, scientific, cultural, and historic properties, and most importantly for this paper, energy and mineral resources. The BLM has developed several new policies with respect to mining, including policies on inspection and enforcement, financial guarantees for reclamation, and the use of cyanide. The goal of these policies is to demonstrate to the American public that mineral exploration and development can be an integral part of sustainable development on public lands in an environmentally sound manner.

A specialized Pore-Fluid Array sampler (PFA) was designed to collect and store pore-fluids to monitor temporal changes of ions and gases in gas hydrate bearing sediments. We tested the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry records hydrate formation or decomposition events and reflects local seismic activity. The PFA is a seafloor probe that consists of an interchangeable instrument package that houses OsmoSamplers, long-term pore-fluid samplers; a specialized low-dead volume fluid coupler; and eight sample ports along a 10-meter sediment probe shaft. The PFA was deployed at Mississippi Canyon 118, a Gulf of Mexico hydrate site. A 160-day record was acquired from the overlying water (OLW) and 1.3 meters below seafloor (mbsf). Fluids were measured for dissolved chloride, sulfate, and methane concentrations and dissolved inorganic carbon and methane stable carbon and deuterium isotope ratios. Chloride and sulfate did not change significantly over time, suggesting the absence of gas hydrate formation or decomposition events. Over the temporal record, methane concentrations averaged 4 mM at 1.3 mbsf and was thermogenic in origin (d13C-CH4 = -32.4±3.4?). The timing of an anomalous 14 mM methane spike coincided with a nearby earthquake (Mw=5.8), consistent with the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry reflects seismic events. Sweden is beginning to reap the rewards of a process that has transformed a country with a history of metal mining into one of Europe's most vibrant exploration regions. Exploration and mining companies from North America, Europe and Australia have joined local firms in the search of gold, base metals and diamonds. This has been due to changes in Sweden's mining laws in the early 1990s. These changes opened the way for unhindered private sector investment in the country's mineral industry. More than 20,000 km2 (4.9 million acres), mainly in northern Sweden, is now held under granted or applied exploration claims. Exploration permits diamonds, applied or granted covers more than half of Sweden's surface. This is a greater proportion of the country than ever before. Major mining companies and junior explorationists are evaluating a geological potential that bears favorable comparison to other major mining centers. Historically, Sweden's gold re- sources occur in greenstone belts in northernmost Sweden and in association with massive sulfide deposits in the Skellefte district. These are receiving particular attention by exploration companies. In addition, new areas in Sweden are also being explored for gold. This increases the probability that Swedish gold production - already the highest in Europe - will increase in the future (Table 1). Sweden's recorded mining history goes back for much of the last large pool of expertise in exploration, mining, equipment manufacturing and minerals industry research. In addition, the Geological Survey of Sweden provides sup- port for exploration in terms of data archives, processing and publications. Other benefits for exploration companies are Sweden's communications infrastructure, its member- ship in the European Union, bringing access to one of the world's major markets and the high level of educational, technical and language skills held by the country's work- force. And deregulation of the economy and the introduction of competitive corporate tax rates have made Sweden a favorable destination for investment in Europe.

The Ertsberg East discovery was announced by Freeport in 1979 with proven geological reserves of 45 Mt (49.6 million tons) with a grade of 2.65% copper and recoverable gold values. This recently discovered deposit is one of a cluster of skarn-type copper occurrences found within the limits of Freeport Indonesia's mining con- cession at an elevation of about 3600 m (12,000 ft) in the extremely rugged Jaya Wijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, the Indonesian half of the island of New Guinea. The Ertsberg East lies about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) east of the Ertsberg ore body, which is also known by the Indonesian name "Gunung Bijih" or "ore mountain." For general background, the original Ertsberg ore body was first discovered by the Dutch geologist Jacques Dozy in 1938 while on a mountain climbing expedition. It was mapped and sampled by Forbes Wilson and Del Flint after a two-week harrowing trek into the mountains from the coastal swamps. A drilling program in 1967- 1968 established that the Ertsberg was a viable mining venture, containing approximately 33 Mt (36.4 million tons) of skarn-type copper ore. The deposit averaged 2.5% copper, with significant values in gold and silver. The first shipment of copper concentrates was made in December 1972, following a capital investment of $200 million. Following the routine production of ore from this deposit, it became necessary to consider additional sources of ore to extend the life of the mining operation. An exploration program was thus started with the initial objective of finding shallow or surface ores which could be blended with the material being mined at Ertsberg. Project geologist Frank Nelson was transferred from Freeport Exploration Co. to the Freeport Indonesia organization at the Ertsberg mine. However, the exploration work was the functional responsibility of Freeport Exploration. Del Flint had overall responsibility for the program from the Reno headquarters office and provided liaison with management in the USA and Indonesia.
