Three International Symposiums-the 14th International Minerals Processing Congress, the 17th APCOM, and the SME-AIME Fall Meeting special symposium on Design and Installation of Com¬minution Circuits-held in 1982 contained a number of papers relating to the fundamentals of processing coals and metallic minerals. In addition, many papers were published elsewhere in the literature. Some of the more significant papers are discussed below. Flavel reviewed key performance parameters, such as energy-size relationships for crushing processes and presented a fundamental basis for optimizing crusher productivity and possibly for development of improved crushers. Pascoe et al. reviewed the use of such control schemes. Magerowski and Karra presented a paper on a computer program developed to and in the design of crushing circuits. The problems associated with the scale-up to very large ball mills were discussed by Arbiter and Harris, and by Kavetsky and Whiten. Both groups concluded that limits on mill productivity arise due to problems associated with particle breakage and transport through mills. Austin et al., and Herbst and Rajamini reviewed the state of the art for the use of grinding circuit simulators for design and control. The effects of mill operating and design parameters on selection and breakage were discussed in detail. The philosophy of control and instrumentation for grinding circuits was extensively discussed by Kawatra and Seitz. Their paper presented for the first time an analytical basis for the inferential particle sizing technique and provided a fundamental basis for the implementation of this technique. The effect of reagent addition variation's on the performance of coal flotation circuits was reported by Kawatra and Waters, and on sulfide flotation circuits by Klimpel et al. Both groups analyzed circuit behavior from a kinetic point of view and reached similar conclusions on the effects of collectors and frothers. The computer simulation of an iron ore flotation circuit also was reported by Kawatra et al. In this work particular attention was paid to the phenomena of froth overloading. Klimpel et al., Kawatra and Waters, and Niemi et al. discussed the philosophy of control by flotation circuits from a fundamental kinetic point of view. An extension of the use of high intensity magnetic separators to the beneficiation of specular hematite was discussed by Thayer and Linkson.

Introduction Ontario's diverse industrial mineral resource base includes structural minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone, and dolostone. These resources are used to produce aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, cement, lime, and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Palezoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were more than 140 Mt (154 million st) of aggregates produced in 1985. About 115 Mt (128 million st) of that was produced in southern Ontario with the rest being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. Structural industrial minerals account for more than 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production. The remaining 20% is accounted for by the nonstructural minerals, such as salt, which is produced in the southwestern part of the province. A host of other nonstructural industrial minerals are known. Production, though, is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite, and byproduct metallurgical sulfur products (Fig. 1). Major production is close to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and northcentral US. With an abundant variety of industrial mineral resources and the large population within 650 km (400 miles) of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario's nine million people accounted for about 35% of Canada's entire $476.3 billion gross domestic product in 1985. This equates to about one-third of the nation's buying power being within a 200-km (125-mile) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well-developed industrial minerals industry that fulfills most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario. Nonstructural industrial minerals are similarly well placed to compete in this high demand area. Although Ontario manufacturers still import some of these materials, Ontario products are achieving significant market share. And, they serve the needs of neighboring provinces and states. Present production and trends Ontario has traditionally produced significant amounts of industrial minerals. This produc¬tion had a value of $956 million in 1984 (Table 1). Structural materials production in 1985 and 1986 approached or exceeded levels not seen since the early 1970s. Many new products have been developed using these raw materials. Thin-seam mining presents unique challenges when management or economic conditions require significant productivity increases. These challenges can be further amplified depending on such factors as labor unions, federal and state regulations and market characteristics. This article explores the turnaround situation occurring at Tanoma Mining Co. (TMC), a medium-sized, underground coal mining company in central Pennsylvania. The company has used a systematic approach of improving management controls and direction, labor relations and communications to improve its cash flow from negative to positive within a projected five-year span. An intensive upgrade-rebuild-replacement program for mining equipment and systems has also been established to support other management activities. Discussion Thin-seam coal mining is an industry within the broader industry of coal mining. Thin seam mining faces the same cost pressures and engineering problems as its higher-seam competitors, without the advantages of moving volume per foot of extracted material. To stay at economic parity with others requires additional creativity within the management team to extract higher productivity gains from the existing workforce and mining systems. The Tanoma operation is a deep mine in Indiana County, PA, about one hour northeast of Pittsburgh. Coal is extracted from the Lower Kittanning "B" seam. The US coal industry has been using continuous room-and-pillar mining (CRPM) machines for more than 30 years for longwall development. This equipment has also been used for production mining in areas that are not appropriate for longwall mining. From 1977 to 1987, the portion of annual US production mined by continuous miner (CM) sections grew slightly from 65% to 70%. Over this time, mine operators and manufacturers have made some advances to attain the full production potential of this method. This is evidenced by the fact that average tons per eight hour shift for continuous miners in the US grew from 180 t (200 st) in 1977 to 431 t (475 st) in 1987. The authors (1990) reported that the increase in productivity was due to several factors: • a drop in prices; • a more mature workforce; • union stability and incentive programs; •procedural improvements; and •technological advances. The authors estimated that about one-third of the increased production came from the first three and other unaccounted for factors and one-third each for the last two. Even though improvements were considerable, continuous miner capacity is much higher than 431 t/shift (475 st per shift). For example, the machinery is capable of mining more than 9 t (10 st) per machine for the 6.5 available hours per shift or 3.5 kt (3900 st). However, this has never been attained on development. Though installations of main mine fans vary widely, the commonest installation is of a surface exhaust fan connected to an upcast shaft some distance below its collar by a horizontal fan drift bending sharply. downwards near its junction with the shaft. The junction of the fan drift with the shaft often causes considerable shock pressure loss if not properly designed. In one of the major coal mines in India circulating 180 m3/s of air through the mine a pressure drop of 229 Pa out of the total fan pressure of 568 Pa occurred at this junction while in a smaller gold mine circulating 9.4 m3/s it was 147 Pa out of a fan-drift pressure of 382 Pa. With larger mines circulating larger volumes of air, ill designed fan drifts can lead to considerable wastage of the power of ventilation. Shock loss at the junction of fan drifts with exhaust shafts depends on (1) the angle of deflection of the bend, (2) sharpness of the corners (both inner and outer) at the junction, (3) the degree of contraction of the flow-stream which depends on the cross- sectional area ratio of the shaft and the fan drift as well as the amount of leakage through the shaft collar. It must be noted here that the friction pressure loss in the bend is negligible compared to the shock pressure loss.

Common carbon dioxide capturing reagents, such as amines and sodium hydroxide, are expensive, toxic, and energy intensive to regenerate. We have added frothers to a sodium carbonate solution in order to increase the surface area available for CO2 transport within the packed bed of a counter current scrubbing column. Addition of frothers has improved the performance of sodium carbonate scrubbing solutions to be on par with sodium hydroxide scrubbing solutions. This novel enhancement of a relatively inexpensive CO2 capture-regeneration cycle shows potential to allow plants to turn a profit by sequestering a waste product. These results are discussed in detail in the following manuscript. INTRODUCTION The combustion of fossil fuels converts chemical energy to thermal energy. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of the reaction. 80% of the world’s electricity is produced by using this thermal energy to power a generator, accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to stabilize the rising atmospheric CO2 levels, researchers are investigating the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems in power plants. [1] Efforts to capture CO2 at some power plants have been successful, but the cost of installing and operating the required equipment is high. As such, very few power plants have CCS systems. If CO2 can be captured and processed into a product that can be sold at a profit, installing CCS systems in power plants will be a very attractive business decision. In order for the sale of captured CO2 to become a profitable venture, the cost of capturing the CO2 from a flue gas must be reduced. BACKGROUND The most common method for separating CO2 from a flue gas is by passing it through a counter-current packed bed scrubbing column. The flue gas enters the bottom of a column while a solution of a chemical with properties advantageous to the absorption of CO2 is pumped to the top. The fluids interact in a packed bed, where the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid. CO2 is an acid gas, so it is common for the scrubbing solution to be alkaline in nature in order to neutralize the carbonic acid that is formed when it is dissolves into water. The exhaust exits the top of the column free of carbon dioxide, which exits the column in the scrubbing solution, reacting or complexing with the absorbent. Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a CO2 scrubbing column. It shows the molar flowrates and compositions of the gas and liquid at the bottom [1], the top [2], and an arbitrary height in the column [Z]. [2,15] L is the molar flowrate of liquid at any point in in the column. G is the molar flowrate of gas at any point in the column. Since the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid, L and G are variable with respect to height. To simplify calculations, the CO2 free molar flowrates Ls and Gs are often used. X is the fraction moles of aqueous CO2 per mole of CO2 free liquid. Y is the fraction moles of gaseous CO2 per mole of CO2 free gas. Figure 2 is a composition diagram of the scrubbing column depicted in figure 1.

Acknowledgments I am honored to be named as a recipient of the Antoine M. Gaudin Award, and I would like to briefly single out four groups who deserve a special thank-you relative to this award. The first group consists of Professor Kawatra, the many international support references that he gathered and the Gaudin Committee itself. I know such things don't come without considerable effort by many individuals, and I'm grateful for their support. The second group consists of the management of The Dow Chemical Company, the managements of various mining companies and, in recent years, the management of G. S. Technologies, all of whom supported me, financially and otherwise, in my grinding, flotation and other particle-processing work. Operations people are the most overworked and under recognized people in the world, whether they be in the mining or chemical industry. Obviously, without extensive industrial support, especially from operating personnel in the mining industry, almost nothing about the work contained in this lecture would have, or could have, happened. The third group consists of a number of coworkers who have played key roles in specifically implementing the new flotation-product portion of this lecture. Of these, Bob Hansen, Don Leonard, Basil Fee, Simon Isherwood, Fernando Cones and Marty Meulendyke deserve special recognition. They have not only been dedicated, but they have been great to work with. Also in this third group are many members of the international academic community, especially those at Penn State. Professor Leonard Austin must be singled out because he took me as a young mathematically oriented chemist and taught me to be an effective process-oriented engineer. Without this experience, I would not have had the over 30-year career as an engineer, which I have loved. In addition, Len planted the size-reduction-research virus in my blood, which I can't seem to get rid of. I also need to mention Professor Frank Aplan, whose obvious love of mineral processing and froth flotation helped to create my interest in flotation. Thus, for those of you who don't like my approach to flotation, it's all Frank's fault. The fourth, and certainly not the least, group to thank is my wife, Charlene, and our two sons, Richard and Steven. No one could have a more supportive family. In every sense of the word, my wife has been my partner from the beginningwe were married at the end of my freshman year in college. She has sacrificed much for me, and I will never really be able to express the depth of my gratitude for Charlene's encouragement, loyalty and support over the past 36 years. General comments on froth flotation The industrial process of froth flotation: Where is it going? I'm here to tell you loud and clear that froth flotation is alive, well, and growing. The inherent characteristics of high mineral throughput per unit of capital, low operating cost per unit of feed, high mineral specificity and high operating flexibility have guaranteed froth flotation an important past and a growing future. As with any evolving technology, there are always trends at the industrial level that are primarily driven by economics. INTRODUCTION The Falconbridge mine ore body extends about 1.6 km (1 mile) in length and the deepest developed ore is on the 6050 level below surface. The ore zone varies in width from a few inches to over 30 m (100 ft) and the average width is 4.9 m (16 ft). Access levels are driven in the ore at 53.3-m (175-ft) intervals. The principal method of mining is overhand longitudinal cut-¬and-fill. Prior to 1962 timber square-set stoping as a secondary extraction method was used for about 15% of the total production. Undercut-and-fill was intro¬duced at Falconbridge in 1962 as a potential replace¬ment for the square-set method in heavy ground. The undercut-and-fill method was developed by Inco in the 1950s, its principal application being to transverse pillar mining. Falconbridge made modifications to this method. A feature of the mine is the No. 1 flat fault which dips 0.79 rad (45°) towards the northeast. The main characteristic of the fault is the presence of large swells of ore directly under the plane of the fault. The ground under the fault area is highly fractured and associated with massive sulfides. In the past, the ore under the fault was recovered, with difficulty, by either tight cut¬and-fill or square-set stoping. In the 1970s these meth¬ods were supplanted to a large degree by the under-cut-¬and-fill method. An advantage of the current undercut-and-fill method which uses cemented fill compared to the cut-and-fill and square-set methods is the reduction of dilution due to better control of the walls. At Falconbridge mine, it is estimated that the grade of ore produced by undercut¬and-fill is improved by approximately 10% over other methods. Where undercut-and-fill is used in very weak ground, a much greater improvement in grade can be expected. Table I shows mining production for 1974. The undercut-and-fill method was first used at Falconbridge during 1962. The first longitudinal stope was prepared for undercutting by laying down laminated beams the length of the stope and installing a lagging mat floor on top of the beams. Unconsolidated tailings fill was poured on top of the mat floor. As the cut ad¬vanced under the floor, heavy posts were placed under the laminated beams at 1.8-m (6-ft) intervals. During 1966, a radical change was made to the method when tailings fill, consolidated with portland cement, replaced the unconsolidated fill. This development eliminated the laminated beams and heavy mat floor and greatly im¬proved the stability of the stope. This system, with minor variations, is currently used at Falconbridge mine. APPLICATION The undercut-and-fill method is used to mine in¬competent ground, sills or floor pillars under mined-out levels, or a block of ore isolated between levels. It is occasionally used to advantage in sequencing produc¬tion from various mining blocks. This is done by mining a block of ore cut-and-fill method and at the same time mining the ore block directly underneath by the under¬cut-and-fill method. The undercut-and-fill mill holes at Falconbridge are either boreholes, stripped timbered raises, or steel mill holes. Boreholes and rock raises tend to slough in heavy and broken ground which increases dilution when sloughing exceeds the ore width outline and also in¬creases the difficulty of moving down to start the new cut. For example, in one installation, a 1.2-m (4-ft) diam borehole sloughed to a size of 3.7 x 5.5 m (12 x 18 ft). The undercut-and-fill method usually requires a mill hole extending from the level below the ore to the top horizon of the ore block. The customary methods of providing a mill hole are: 1) A borehole is driven from level to level through the ore block and a chute installed on the bottom level (Fig. 1). 2) An existing raise is used as a mill hole. If the raise is timbered, a steel mill hole is installed inside the timber and tailings fill poured around the steel mill hole (Fig. 1). 3) An existing steel mill hole, situated at one end of a mined-out stope, is used as the mill hole for an ad¬jacent undercut-and-fill ore block. The mill hole posi¬tion is determined when planning the mining sequence of the first stope (Fig. 2).

The objective of this chapter is to discuss the interrelationship between industrial minerals and chemical manufacturing. It is intended to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Particular emphasis is given to the pertinent chemical element and to market factors. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages of this handbook permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. Hydrocarbons, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potassium, and nitrogen for fertilizers, and titanium dioxide for pigments. The remaining six elements of major importance are: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. [Table 1] affords an overview of the main industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry. Table 2 is a chart of the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake-type brines, which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland-type brines, from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake-type brines, yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak- type brines, produced mainly for lithium. MARKET ATTRIBUTES Some of the important market traits common to industrial minerals used by the chemical industry are: 1. They are international commodities, such as fluorspar and sulfur, which largely move to foreign consumers. 2. Grade, and freedom from deleterious elements are important factors affecting their usability in chemical processes. An example is salt (NaCl) used in electrolysis where ultrapure evaporated salt is required to meet rigid specifications. 3. Purified products take on the characteristics of specialty items and command a distinctly higher price than the basic commodity from which they are derived. 4. In practically all cases, chemical users require some sort of cleaning or beneficiation of the naturally-occurring mineral to bring it to specification, and individual specifications may vary from user to user for essentially the same use. 5. In some instances it is necessary to strike a balance between what the vendor can supply and what the buyer requires, with the result that specifications have to be eased to afford the needed materials in marginal cases. 6. Because they tend to be bulk commodities, low cost for handling and transportation are important and such costs may limit the area from which a chemical user can draw his supply. 7. Shipments are usually in bulk and frequently in multiple-car, full-trainload or full-shipload lots to reduce transport costs, which in turn may require large terminal investment facilities. 8. Purchases are generally by contract of one year or longer term, with spot buying playing only a minor role. 9. Contract prices are usually fixed in short term commitments, but may vary according to assay, with premiums and penalties for content above or below the norm; however, general practice is for specifications to be fixed in the contract with minimums being set for the desired material and maximums for undesired elements. In longer term contracts, prices are often escalated on labor, fuel, and other vendor processing costs. 10. Suppliers of individual commodities to the chemical industry tend to be limited in number and are generally medium- to large-size producers that supply a few major consumers. 11. The bulk of the mineral volume is for basic chemical uses, sulfur suppliers to sulfuric acid producers and fluorspar for hydrofluoric acid producers being typical examples. These basic chemical products then are used for the production of other products. 12. Shortage of a supply of adequate quality leads consumers to seek substitutes. In the case of fluorspar, much work is being done on recovery of fluorine from phosphate rock. Success in the form of fluorosilicic acid and/or hydrofluoric acid production could, in time, affect the hydrofluoric acid chemical industry. 13. Markets tend to be characterized by cycles of shortage followed by oversupply, with attendant wide price fluctuations. 14. Baniers to trade can have an adverse effect on the necessary movement of industrial minerals used by the chemical industry in international trade. Antidumping laws, quotas, and tariffs can disrupt or dislocate normal markets. 15. Chemical industry consumers may back-integrate for security of supply or for favorable economics, sometimes by joint ownership and often with experienced mining partners.

Part 2 of this article continues the discussion of a 10-year, multimillion dollar research and plant testing program on slurry rheology and grinding circuits. The first part of the article (ME, Dec. 1982) presented the basic concepts identified by the research and some laboratory test results. This section Illustrates typical Industrial scale test results and Identifies some industrial operating implications of controlling rheology by different methods. At least four controllable factors decide the rheological character of a slurry-slurry density or percent solids, particle size distribution, chemical environment, and slurry temperature. The second factor has two interrelated facets: the shape of the particle size distribution which controls packing behavior of the solids, and the fineness of the distribution. Finer particles increase interparticle forces and viscosity. As indicated in Part 1, during a given grinding test it is possible for all four factors to change. However, regardless of the particular settings of the four factors in a given test, if the resulting rheological character is either dilatant, pseudoplastic, or pseudoplastic with yield, the associated breakage rate is correlated with the current rheological character. It is obvious, for example, in batch grinding tests run at constant percent solids, that the second and third factors, where appropriate, are changing during grinding because size distributions are changing and the production of fresh surface area takes up unadsorbed chemical. Thus the corresponding rheological character change in batch tests with increasing grind time would be dilatant to pseudoplastic to pseudoplastic with yield. The degree to which this transformation occurs depends on the changing setting of the four factors over grinding time. In continuous grinding tests, one might logically expect that dramatic changes in any one of the four factors will be less likely to occur. It will be shown that continuous mill operations offer some unique opportunities to take advantage of possible rheological transformation by more direct operational control of the settings for the four factors. One extra observation noted in the rheological studies was the variability in the location and extent of region B (pseudoplastic behavior) for the various coals and ores tested. The location of region B was usually in the region of 45-55% solids by volume and was of the extent of 0-8%, or 2-11% with chemical addition. The corresponding increase in net production ranged from 0-10% in region B and 0-21% in region B&apos;. When region B is small or zero (no pseudoplastic character is exhibited) no increase in production will be observed and the use of chemicals is often marginal. There are several reasons for some materials exhibiting this quick transformation from dilatancy to high yield values often at surprisingly low percent solids by volume such as 30%. One condition identified was for materials containing high levels of viscosity-producing elements such as- carbonates or clays. A second condition documented was for materials that exhibited unusually fine primary fragment distributions (fine B1,; curves). This corresponds to materials having small y values of < 0.5. Such a slurry developed a yield value quickly during grinding because of the rapid buildup of fines. A related problem can be presented by materials exhibiting excessively coarse primary fragment distributions, y values > 0.9. Breakage of this type of material produces size distributions that give poor packing efficiencies even at long grind times, thus hindering the normal rheological transformation presented earlier. A final condition that can cause the occurrance of region B to be small or zero is when the media void volume filling of slurry is < 100%. Figures 5a and 5b use previously published data of this study to demonstrate the influence of solids loading and weight percent solids on the net production of taconite ore in a laboratory batch ball mill. In particular, Fig. 5a illustrates several trends not generally recognized until this study. They include these two: • Increased slurry density allows for increased solids loading before passing through the maximum in the net production curve where the fall-off is due to non first order breakage. • The use of rheology control chemicals such as GA-4272 allows this trend to be extended to higher slurry loadings with an increase in net production over any previous condition by keeping grinding first order. Figure 5b shows the same data as Fig. 5a plotted for constant weight loadings. These various figures of net production versus percent solids show the location and extent of the regions A, B, and C presented in Part 1 as a function of solids loading. In 1993, a lawsuit was filed on behalf ofnative groups in Ecuador against Texaco for environmental damage resulting from petrole­um production activities which had occurred many years earlier. The basis of the lawsuit at the time was that Texaco had failed to perform its foreign activities in the same manner that it operated in the U.S. No environmental regulations were in existence in Ecuador at the time of Texaco's operations. Also in 1993, a lawsuit for over $3 billion Australian was filed on behalf of native New Guineans for alleged environ­mental damages and health impacts that occurred as a result of BHP's operations at its Ok Tedi Mine. Since then, Royal Dutch Shell has been subjected to major criticism for environmental damage caused by its operations in Nigeria. A more recent report has criticized Shell for groundwater contamination of an aquifer in Turkey. Southern Peru Copper is now defending against a lawsuit filed by citizens exposed to air emissions from smelter operations in Peru. In all of these cases, much of the alleged damages occurred many years previous. A defense com­monly made by the companies has been that operations were conducted according to the standards in place at the time. This has not limited the lawsuits nor minimized the international publicity which has followed. While such lawsuits have been common in the U.S. for many years, their appearance in other nations have pointed out a growing sense of worldwide concern with regard to the impacts of industrial operations. Of particular concern is the fact that lawsuits have been filed in countries that have up to now had few, if any, environmental regulations. The regulatory environment has been a part of most U.S. business operations since the early 1970's. Now, however, envi­ronmental regulations are starting to be implemented in many less developed nations. This has led to the formulation of a myriad of standards and approaches to environmental regulation around the world. For multinational companies, the challenge becomes one of anticipating the level of compliance that will be required to minimize liabilities not only for the present but also in the future. The purpose of this paper is to provide some guid­ance with regards to choosing a level of compliance, particular­ly as it applies to water quality.

Establishing geotechnical baselines on soft ground projects that require the use of closed-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is difficult. It is hard to see the face when mining and the excavated material is combined and mixed, all of which makes baseline quantifications challenging. In an attempt to meet underlying objectives of minimizing bidder contingencies, allocating or sharing risks and paying for conditions only if they occur, nongeotechnical baselines (i.e., functional baselines) have been developed. These have been used on the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority?s Clean Rivers (DCCR) Blue Plains Tunnel (BPT) project. This article examines the development of such functional baselines and how they were implemented on the BPT project.

Because of variation in rock type and site conditions, it is important to create site-specific prediction models for peak particle velocity (PPV) and understand instrumentation mounting locations to better interpret the readings provided following blasting operations. The Atlanta Airport is expanding the section of underground tunnels for its Plane Train people mover, and drill and blast operations were determined to be the suitable method of excavation for the project. Extensive work was done to begin creating prediction models and determining levels of concern based on readings from various types of instrumentation. This paper analyzes the effect of close quarters construction blast vibrations and observed frequency spectrum on existing structures with data from 22 different seismographs mounted in various locations and ground conditions.

"A wind tunnel was designed to examine air flow, heat transfer and layering near an active fire at a working face. This tunnel simulates an active entry in an underground coal mine including an attached cross-cut of similar dimensions. A steel rectangular duct 1 ft. (0.305 m) tall, 3 ft. (0.914 m) wide and 10 ft. (3.05 m) long composes the main body of the tunnel and represents a mine entry. Air flow is generated by an exhausting centrifugal fan attached to one end of the crosscut. This fan was sized to supply air velocities based on Froude scaling. A 6 in. (15.25 cm) propane burner is used to simulate fires of various heat release rates at the working face. Thermocouples are used to map heat layering in the tunnel. Ports are installed for the introduction of tracer gases into and from sampling the system. Barometric, differential pressure, and temperature sensors are also included to monitor environmental conditions. Details about the design and testing of the system are presented including an overview of how the tunnel was scaled to accurately represent fire and flow phenomena. Finally, the proposed use of the tunnel for better understanding of mine fire phenomena and prevention is given. INTRODUCTION Fires in underground mines have been a concern since the dawn of mining. While technological advancements, regulations and best practices have improved both fire detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to represent high risk events. From 2006 through 2015, fires accounted for 1.06% of fatalities in underground coal mines and 0.85 percent of fatalities in all underground mines in the United States (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006 to 2015). In addition to the risk of loss of life, mine fires can cause millions of dollars in equipment damages and lost production revenue. Extensive research has been conducted on how fires occur and spread in underground mines. In addition to testing conducted by government agencies such as the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) (e.g.(Liming, 2006), researchers like Verakis and Dalzell (Verakis, 1988) and Lowndes, et. al. (Lowndes, 2004) have furthered this field by studying ignitions and propagation of conveyor belt fires. While the studies of belt fires in mines are extensive, studies focused on fires at the working face are few in number. The particularly confined space and limited access to a working face, coupled with less robust, temporary ventilation controls create a unique environment that warrants special attention. Separate from studies on mine fires, the use of tracer gases to characterize flow patterns in normal mining ventilation is well established. In 1982, Timko and Thimons (Timko, 1982) outlined current and future applications of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). However, little experimentation has been conducted to study specifically how tracer gases might be used to evaluate active mine fires and the fires’ effect on the surrounding mine environment (e.g.(Lindsay, 2014). In order to better understand the dynamics of smoke layering from a fire in an enclosed space, a small-scale apparatus was designed to map smoke layering and to examine other aspects of fire behavior at a working face. In addition to studying smoke flow around an active fire, experiments will be conducted using tracer gases in order to determine how they might be used to evaluate an underground fire."

To accommodate the new Pier A expansion at BWI airport, a 1.8 m (6.0 ft)diameter stormwater pipe was constructed below active Runway 15R-33L. The jacked tunnel alignment runs east/west below the runway, and the depth the crown was 6.1 m(20 ft). Soil conditions consisted of very loose to medium sand and gravel, with some medium stiff clay and silt. Super Jet Grouting was selected as the ground treatment system, creating large diameter columns. All work was performed from the surface of the runway between the hours of 12 am and 6 am. Monitoring points along the tunnel in the grout zone indicated zero settlement during tunneling. Tunneling operations in front of and beyond the treatment zone experienced significant settlement. Super Jet Grouting in the treatment zone provided a low permeability continuous stable soilcrete that was readily mined while the runway remained in service.

Since the 1974 introduction of catalytic converters to automobiles in the United States, more than 150,000 kg (5,000,000 oz) of platinum, palladium, and rhodium have been used in the converters. An estimated 8 to 10 million converters are being used annually in the United States, each containing from $5 to $15 of PGM metals. In addition, use of converters is beginning in Europe which will significantly increase the quantity of PGM used. Two basic types of catalysts for converters are being used: pellet and monolithic. The pellets are small, discrete spheres or cylinders of gamma-alumina coated with platinum group metals, Figure 1. The monolithic are honeycombs of a cordierite, A13(Mg,Fe)2Si5AlO18, base coated with gamma-alumina and subsequently with platinum group metals, Figure 2. Pellet catalysts are being used by General Motors and American Motors; whereas Ford and Chrysler are using monolithic catalysts. The table below compares the PGM content and value of the catalysts.

Although vein-, syenite-, and pegmatite-type deposits are known in Saskatchewan, recent intense exploration stems from discovery of several exceptionally high grade uranium and uranium-nickel deposits locallized near the basal unconformity of the 1.3-1.4 b.y. Athabasca Sandstone Formation. Graphitic basement rocks and post-Athabasca faulting or brecciation coincident with the unconformity are important in locallizing uranium deposits which form as tabular, shoe lace-like bodies with grades averaging over two percent and containing up to 50,000 tonnes U308. Some deposits have similar nickel contents. A few published sandstone analyses average 0.8 ppm uranium while basement granitoid and meta-sedimentary rocks vary from 0.5 to 20 ppm. In the proposed genetic model, traces of uranium are leached from these rocks by oxidized formation waters sweeping through the sandstone and along faults. Solutions are reduced and uranium is precipitated as basement graphitic meta-pelites are encountered along brecciated fault zones.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of the Fe2+/Fe3+-SO2 (FFS) anode reaction in the copper leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning circuit. The investigation revealed that six process variables, including anode type, Fe 21 concentration, current density, electrolyte temperature, degree of agitation, and manifold injection point were found to influence cell voltage and cell current efficiency. A 47% voltage reduction (0.8 versus 1.5 V) compared to conventional electrowinning with activated lead (ALE) anodes was achieved at a current density of 258 A/m2 (24 A/ft2) with an industrial electrolyte. Current efficiency was maintained above 90%, and S02 above the cell measured less than 1 ppm when activated carbon was used to assist the reduction of Fe" by S02 in the copper electrolyte. Solvent extraction tests showed that Alamine 336 is a stronger H2SO4 extractant than is needed to extract the excess acid produced by the FFS anode reaction.

Flotation of oxide minerals, particularly silicates, with cationic collectors differs substantially from classic flotation of sulfide minerals using sulfhydryl collectors. In the case of cationic flotation of these minerals, in general: 1. There is a greater importance of electrostatic interaction between mineral and collector. 2. Longer-chained collectors are required; as a rule at least 10 carbons must be present in the hydrocarbon chain. 3. Moderate concentration of collector is required. 4. Attachment between collector and mineral appears to be less strong even though the system may exhibit a large contact angle. 5. Required conditioning time before flotation is usually relatively short. 6. There is sensitivity to slimes. 7. The collectors usually possess frothing power. 8. Selectivity of cationic collectors for specific minerals is usually poor. Almost any of the oxide and silicate minerals may be floated using cationic collectors.
