"This paper describes the development of a 3D finite element model for predicting ground movements caused by construction of 7.1 m diameter twin bored tunnels for the Crossrail project in London using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines. The model uses the commercial FE code, Plaxis 3D, to represent the face pressure, conical shield, grouting process and activation of precast segmental concrete lining systems through a set of boundary conditions that advance through the soil mass along a prescribed trajectory. Soil behavior is described using the Mohr-Coulomb soil model with input parameters calibrated from laboratory element tests. The analyses focus on the performance of the EPB tunneling machines in greenfield conditions beneath Hyde Park, where the tunneling occurs within deep layers of relatively uniform London Clay. The model predictions are in good agreement with surface and sub-surface vertical settlements measured at a well-instrumented section, but tend to overestimate the measured lateral displacements towards the tunnel. Ongoing studies are focused on the role of soil behavior and the approximations in FE model predictions of tunnel-induced ground deformations. Introduction Since their introduction in the 1970’s, closed-face Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines have become widely used for soft ground tunnel construction. The EPB design relies on a screw conveyor system to regulate the pressure of the excavated soil/spoil within the head chamber and hence control stability at the face of the machine. One of the key design issues in the application of EPB machines is to establish how control parameters, including the advance rate, face pressure and grouting processes (used to compensate for the tail void at the rear of the shield and to infill gaps between the precast lining rings and surrounding soil) affect and/or control the far-field ground movements. For closed-face systems, short-term deformations are associated with ground losses at the face, overcutting and ploughing of the shield and poor control of grouting in the tail void; while long-term deformations can occur due to consolidation and creep within the surrounding soil (and are closely connected to the seepage boundary conditions;e.g., Laver & Soga, 2012). The control parameters for advancing the EPB machine can have a significant effect on the magnitude and distribution of the far-field deformations. Therefore, analyses of the ground response to tunneling require accurate modeling of the soil stratigraphy and constitutive behavior as well as the construction process. Finite element (FE) methods have been used to simulate tunnel construction since the early 1980s, but only a few studies involved three-dimensional modelling of mechanized tunneling (e.g., Finno and Clough 1985; Bernat and Cambou 1999; Swoboda and Abu-Krisha 1999; Dias et.al. 2000; Melis et.al. 2002; Kasper and Meschke 2004; Möller 2006). In order to get a better understanding of the effect of the construction process and soil properties on the development of the ground deformations more comprehensive models of tunnel excavation and tunnel support are required in order to capture the 3D nature of mechanized tunneling and the effect of construction parameters such as advance rate, face and grout pressure."

At 6 percent downgrade to a low point beneath California?s Sacramento River, the Lower Northwest Interceptor Sewer was a difficult project from the outset. Project owner Sacramento County Regional Sanitation District (SRC-SD) planned to excavate the V-shaped tunnel in two sections using an earth pressure balance (EPB) machine in soft ground. Muck removal, due to the steep downgrade, was a tricky proposition. ?We did look at muck cars, but determined they were not the best option due to the relatively steep slope of the tunnel alignment. The safety benefits of conveyors on this job were obvious, as there were not the potential hazards associated with muck cars traveling on an incline or derailing,? said Steve Norris, senior civil engineer for SRCSD The successful project represented one of the first instances of a conveyor system being used for a soft ground tunnel boring machine (TBM) application. Several projects in California, including a recent tunnel completed in 2009, have highlighted a growing acceptance of conveyor muck removal in a variety of ground conditions. Conveyors offer higher system availability than more common methods, such as muck cars, as they allow for continual operation of the TBM. The design of conveyor systems must, however, take into account the differences in material between soft ground and hard rock, including belt cleaning features, sealed transfer points and other elements.

A major process control system is in some ways like a complex organism. The extremities, (that is, field instruments) are exposed to many hazards and suffer malfunctions of relatively minor and repetitive nature. Here I equate a stuck valve or dead transmitter with a skin abrasion or cut. The maintenance and repair of the extremities can be done by technicians with basic but thorough knowledge of relatively few problems and their solutions. Here I equate with administering Band-Aids and aspirin. On the other extreme, when the master control device (such as a computer) fails, one does not attempt home remedies. A "brain" specialist is called in. It is, however, crucial that the patient be able to clearly describe his symptoms. Getting down to the case at hand, a complex system consisting of field instruments, instrument racks, interface equipment, and perhaps a computer, may require maintenance at all levels. At the field equipment end where physical damage, corrosive atmospheres, reconfiguration, and routine calibration checks are common, the customer has the opportunity to develop a competent staff of maintenance people. The relatively high maintenance activity assures competence through repetition.

High-value materials, such as gold, platinum and other precious metals, are subject to loss through unauthorized removal from mines, smelters, refiners and other places where such materials are processed. A study by Gastrow (2001) determined that between 1994 and 1998 an average of 603 kg/a (1,330 lb/year) of gold was stolen from South African mines and subsequently recovered. This does not include the gold that was stolen but not recovered. At 2011 prices, 603 kg/a (1,330 lb/year) of gold would be worth approximately $33 million. Mine security personnel believe that the unrecovered stolen gold far exceeds what is recovered (Gastrow 2001). Traditionally, metal detectors have been used to screen personnel leaving secure areas to discourage such unauthorized removal. However, with the current near-record prices of gold, platinum and other precious metals, it has become worthwhile for people exiting a facility to walk out with quantities of product that are too small for ordinary metal detectors to register, resulting in substantial financial losses.

"INTRODUCTION This past year commodity prices continued their dip with increased volatility causing market values to slide another 16% putting increased pressure on even the largest companies to improve their free cash flow.[1] Without a recovery in commodity prices in sight, companies must find a sustainable method to improve returns in the current economic climate. In an effort to improve plant sustainability, the mineral processing industry is investing in advanced automation technologies and innovative processing methods that are both more reliable and more efficient than ever before. One such breakthrough technology is Heap Leaching (HL). This method of extraction has certain advantages over traditional metallurgical methods making previously unsustainable operations economically feasible. While HL is already seeing use in the gold and copper industries among others, recent developments may allow for the use of HL to process primary sulfide ores which make up about 80% of today’s ores.[2] For this reason, this emerging technology is poised for exciting growth. Unfortunately, as with any process change, the implementation of HL projects requires significant training on both the control system as well as the underlying process, and further, due to the complex nature of the HL process, this can be a particularly difficult task. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB Even before the implementation of these new technologies, the availability of the skilled workforce has already become a significant problem for the mining and mineral processing industries. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years.[3] This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, research suggests that up to 50% of skilled mining and mineral process professionals are expected to retire in the next 5 years, leaving with their irreplaceable knowledge and experience.[4] While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences. In addition to a rapidly aging workforce and an inexperienced labor pool, a study done by the Oil and Gas Journal showed that it takes about 7 years, on average, for new workers to achieve a level of competency that permits them to assess risks and appropriately make decisions.[5] Not only is this figure is in direct conflict with the typical tenure of 5 years in one position meaning that the thinly spread skilled labor will be required to become senior staff before they are able to achieve competency in their current role, this also means that these millennials are not given the opportunity to become competent in their role before the retirement of the more experienced workforce."

In the time period from the early 1980's to the present, longwall roof support technology has evolved tremendously. Chock supports and caliper shields were replaced by 2-leg or 4-leg lemniscate shields. The lemniscate linkage for which the support is named offers numerous advantages to the sup-port both as a fabricated structure and to its performance in the mining application. The hydraulic system, which is the dynamic element of the roof support, was essentially unchanged in early lemniscate shields with the exception of the complexity of additional hydraulic circuits to power a canopy tilt cylinder and canopy side-seals. The control of these fluid-powered functions was provided by direct manual control of valves energizing individual functions onboard the roof-support or the adjacent roof-support. This control valve-gear was comprised of multiple individual valves arranged in a "bank" or integrated into a single hydraulic distribution block with a single operating handle to select any independent function.

The Bay Park Conveyance Project was one of the largest microtunneling and rehab projects in the United States at the time of completion. The completed project conveys treated water from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility located in Nassau County, New York, which currently discharges an average of 50 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated water into Reynolds Channel, to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) ocean outfall pipe. The pipe carrying treated wastewater was installed approximately 20–60 feet below the surface. The treated wastewater is conveyed via microtunnel construction of a 2-mile long force main from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility to an existing aqueduct under the Sunrise Highway, the rehabilitation of an 7.3-mile stretch of the aqueduct via sliplining, and construction via microtunnel of a 1.6-mile-long force main to connect the rehabilitated aqueduct to the existing Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) outfall, which discharges and diffuses treated water three miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. This paper will review the Design-Build requirements, the chosen innovative solutions during planning for the micro tunneling portion of the project and review the microtunnel construction on the project.

Introduction Metals exploration activity is moderately intense in the US despite the 1981-82 recession in the mining industry. Although exploration expenditures are significantly less than the 1981 peak, quality and goal orientation of current exploration are high. Major foreign and domestic mining companies as well as nonmetal companies had been attracted to invest in minerals in the US. Its capital markets, political stability, and open-door policy are attractive for hard mineral explo¬ration, particularly in the West. The approach was to either acquire fully or partially developed ore bodies through merger and acquisition, or to fund large scale exploration programs in search of bulk-tonnage deposits. The acquisition avenue has not proved the panacea envisioned for overcoming lack of substantive mineral development. Nor has the decentralized approach to exploration that was adopted proven cost-effective. The emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of all other commodities, raises questions regarding the direction of exploration in the US for the rest of the 1980s. Overview More than 300 companies are active in metals exploration in the US. These range from established, well-known domestic and foreign corporations to hurriedly incorporated, unknown companies financed by having promoted mineral prospects or occurrences of questionable quality. Junior companies tend to be oriented toward property entrepreneurship, rather than the development of minerals resources. These companies have helped maintain mineral lands from prospect to production by holding blocks of property intact during periods of exploration inactivity. This was done through promotional efforts, even though few properties that attracted major venturers proved to have real merit. Exploration objectives of senior and junior exploration companies currently embrace only a few commodities. Arranged in approximate descending order of priority, these are: precious metals; base metals in monometallic or polymetallic deposits; strategic metals, such as tungsten, tantalum, and tin; unconventional commodities, such as diamonds; ferrous metals; and commodities such as beryl, zeolites, and barite. Prospectors are important in searching for these targets. In the US, where they have been financed by major and junior companies, prospectors have proven a useful and low-cost means of locating gold prospects (e.g. the Alligator Ridge property in Nevada). The tenacity and persistence of independent prospectors have been factors in discovering properties rejected or overlooked by professional geologists (e.g. Lornex mine in British Columbia). This has been realized by the provincial government that grubstakes bona fide prospectors. Exploration interest in commodities has always been cyclic with price. Gold is one of the few metals that has experienced a price increase of such magnitude to warrant attention. The potential for realizing adequate operating margins for the Nevada open-pit "no-see-um" gold deposits is great. The present declining gold price, however, may indicate that this emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of other commodities, is shortsighted. Mining companies have been the last to react to price increases, opening new mines based on unrealistic market expectations. A scenario could develop where plummeting gold prices bring recession to the gold industry, as lately occurred in uranium, molybdenum, and copper. The work described in this paper is sponsored by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of accelerating the drilling of roof bolt holes and reducing the quantity of materials needed to fill each hole. A high-speed small-hole drill has been fabricated and tested in the laboratory. High priority has been given to safety, reliability, and compatibility with underground coal mining practice. The combination of drag bits and erosion jets is designed for high penetration rate, long wear life, and uniform hole size in a variety of sedimentary strata. A reliable high-pressure high-speed swivel feeds water to the bit at about 4 1/min (1 gpm). The duplex hydraulic intensifier which drives the jets has a 40 kw capacity (30hhp) Results of recent full-scale laboratory testing are presented.

The City of Toronto's Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors (NTC) ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. 120 m of Starter tunnel and 70 m of Tail tunnel were excavated with roadheaders to help with the launch of the TBM and as part of the contract base scope work. JayDee Canada in Collaboration with Everest Equipment Co. developed an innovative approach to design and build a stand-alone Ring Machine Erector nicknamed Enterprise to erect precast segmental lining in Starter and Tail tunnels in lieu of Cast-In- Place concrete. This paper describes the design and provides feedback on the innovative procedure used to install the rings.

The Australian longwall mining industry spends millions of dollars per year on proactive and reactive ground consolidation applications across most of the operations currently in production. The design and effectiveness of the applications and products vary widely and are based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. In the continual improve the effectiveness of how consolidation products are used and when by enhancing our knowledge of the mechanical properties of products used in underground coal applications and applying this increased understanding to geotechnical design. One of the current challenges to further developing more appropriate and accurate geotechnical design methods for consolidation activities is the lack of standardised materials testing and knowledge of rock mechanics data on in situ performance. The lack of industry standardisadesign of consolidation programs, with a reliance on experience-based guidance for rockmass consolidation design. consolidation products. The program was designed to provide the industry with a set of geomechanical property index tests and a data set that can be utilised by rock mechanics engineers as baseline information for product evaluation and engineering design. The laboratory work undertaken is critical to understanding the exact small-scale mechanical properties of these products and testing was carried out at Monash University for various states of curing of each product. Recognising that the speed at which a mixed product develops its desired properties to act as a support element in underground coal mines is critical to its serviceability. This paper presents the testing rationale proposed, the testing results, and a framework for how the data set can be used to improve the engineering basis for ground consolidation design, in terms of expected rockmass performance under various mining conditions and application parameters.

On Nov. 4, 1981 A/S Sydvaranger's 1-kt/h (1,100-stph) wet-process, iron ore ball mill completed its first four months of uninterrupted, full-load operation in Kirkenes, Norway. This 6.5-m-diam (21-ft-diam) mill is driven by a gearless ring or wraparound 8.1-MW (10,860-hp) motor at 13.1 rpm-a first of a kind in this segment of industry. This article examines reasons for selecting this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes the installation in Norway. History For almost a decade, good operating experiences have been gained with 28 gearless ring motor drives in the cement industry, driving 2.5 to 4-m-diam (8.2 to 13-ft-diam) tube mills with drive powers ranging from about 3-4 MW (4,000 - 8,000 hp). Why then did the mineral ore processing industry hesitate until 1980 to adopt this successful concept for similar applications on ball, semiautogenous, and autogenous mills? There are a number of good reasons in the eyes of conservative mill builders and operators, the most commonly cited ones are: • No operating experience in this segment of specialized industry. • More severe environmental conditions in the wet ore grinding process. • An indifferent attitude of mill builders and electric motor manufacturers towards new drive technologies. • Limited confidence in solid-state power supply systems, such as frequency converters of the required size. There have been and still are numerous problems associated with low-speed geared mill drives of any kind, especially with individual motor/gear sizes approaching or exceeding about 4 MW (5,360 hp). Every mill builder knows about them, but operators learn to accept them as inevitable. The Decision to Change Three things combined to break this technological stalemate: the courage and progressive spirit of one major iron ore processor in Scandinavia, the cooperation of three experienced manufacturers, and an unusual application problem that could not be solved by any conventional approach. The last factor was surely the decisive one, but the first one does not come as a surprise either. The Swedes near Kiruna and the Norwegians around Kirkenes are experienced ore miners and processors, and much credit goes to them for technological breakthroughs in the industry. At A/S Sydvaranger in Kirkenes, above the Polar circle at about the latitude of Alaska's northern tip, the existing grinding facilities, with a total of 14 100 to 240-t/h (110 to 264-stph) ball mills, can not be expanded. Nevertheless, to increase mill throughput, only installing a larger mill in place of an existing smaller one was a practical alternative. For this replacement, the owners set requirements that seemed impossible to meet: • The old 100-t/h (110-stph) ball mill should be replaced with a new ball mill with 10 times the rated throughput, without significantly impairing the operation of the remaining mills, and without significantly changing the mill building. • The new mill should have a variable-speed drive to ultimately optimize the grinding process by means of a closed-loop process¬computer-controlled grinding cycle, and to minimize the specific energy consumption. • Availability, efficiency, and life expectancy of all new components must be higher than those being replaced. • Inrush-current and harmonic loads on the rather weak electric supply line must be minimized to ensure safe plant operation. All old ball mills at A/S Sydvaranger are the geared type, using single synchronous and wound-rotor, slow-speed motors with ring-and-pinion gears. Operators are familiar with the limitations and problems associated with such drives, and they are aware that the following items become major concerns when drive powers are drastically increased: • Gears are subject to wear and tear, require frequent maintenance, and eventual replacement of major parts. • Gears are sensitive to misalignment, overload, and thermal distortion, limiting their useful life. • On dual or quadruple drives, load-sharing and torque oscillations between motors can be a major reason for concern. • At these speeds, ring-and-pinion gears reach their torque transmission capabilities altogether at around 4 MW (5,360 hp) per motor/pinion. To obtain the desired variable-speed performance of the new drive, the only practical and economical conventional solution would have been a frequency-controlled, low- or medium-speed dual motor drive with about 8 MW (10,720 hp) of power. This, however, was not feasible because of limited floor space. Therefore, bids were solicited for the alternative drive method, the gearless ring motor. General Considerations Why are such large mills considered? After all, one could avoid all the problems by simply staying with smaller mill unit sizes. Under competitive pressures of free markets, however, grinding efficiencies and specific energy consumption become key factors in selecting new equipment. This paper describes the design of a wellfield to provide a water supply for a new mine in southern Africa. A hydrogeological investigation was conducted that included the drilling and test pumping of eight wells located within a highly jointed pyroxenite aquifer. The wellfield was designed using a simple probabilistic analysis. This approach allowed the variability of the aquifer parameters to be taken into account. A risk assessment analysis was then carried out to evaluate the level of assurance that a reliable water supply could be provided by the wellfield. The analysis was also used to assess the effects of supplementing the water supply by pumping from nearby flooded workings.

Managing commercial risks associated with subsurface construction may be the greatest challenge the underground industry faces. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) was developed in the U.S. to help manage those commercial risks, and to stem increasing litigation in the industry. A guidelines document by the American Society of Civil Engineers was published in 1997 and was updated in 2007. This paper provides an historical perspective, overviews the main objectives of a GBR, presents issues and trends that instigated the need to update the 2007 publication, and describes the process that will lead to a new GBR guidelines publication in 2022

The Mining Engineering Handbook is written primarily for persons interested in the economic extraction of minerals. Not everyone referring to this book will be knowledgeable about mining and, therefore, this section is intended to explain to interested persons the scope of mining as well as fulfilling the title of "Mining's Place and Contribution" among the industries of society. 1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS AND ORE In the year 1971, the number of known elements amounted to 104. Fifteen of these have been made only in the laboratory, others may have persisted from the primitive atmosphere, but, by and large, elements originated from magmas or igneous rocks of the outer rocky shell of the earth. Only eight elements constitute 98% by weight of the earth's crust. These are oxygen, 47%; silicon. 28%; aluminum, 8%; iron, 5%; and sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium, less than 4% each. These common elements and the other less common ones are the building blocks of minerals, of which there are over 2,000 varieties. According to Webster: "A mineral is an inorganic substance occul.ring natura!ly in the earth and having a consistent and distinctive set of physical properties and a composition that can be expressed by a chemical formula. The term is sometimes applied to organic substances, such as coal." Thus, minerals are precise combinations of elements. Rocks, as distinct from minerals, are composed of assemblages of minerals. When minerals are found in sufficient concentration to warrant extraction by mining, the mineralized area is considered an ore deposit. The definition of ore is mineral that can be extracted from the ground at a profit. The economic connotation is implicit in the word ore. Since most of the useful elements compose such a small percentage of the earth's crust, the occurrence of ore deposits as we know them would not have transpired had not geologic processes concentrated the elements (see Sec. 4). 1.2-DEFINITIONS OF MINING TERMS Extensive coverage of the many descriptive terms used in mining may be found in a good mining glossary, such as is available from the Superintendent of Documents (see Sec. 35), but for convenience a number of the more common definitions are given here. Mining may be defined, as by A. B. Cummins, as the act, process or work of extracting minerals or coal from their natural environment and transporting them to the point of processing or use. In a recent issue of the Mining Congress Journal, J. L. Gilliland discussed the relationship of air quality criteria, standards, and regu¬lations (1). As he pointed out, The Secretary of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare is charged with issuing "Air Quality Criteria" which are statements concerning the concentration-effects relationship of an air pollutant. These "criteria" provide the states with a basis for their air quality "standards," which may lead in turn to emission "regulations." He further cites a list of major factors described by the National Air Pollution Control Administration, which must be considered in developing criteria. These are: properties of pollution; responses; measurement methods; exposure parameters; and characteristics of receptors. Although we briefly discuss the first two items, the principal concern of this paper is with the third item, the methods of measurements. In attempting to define responses, it has proven surprisingly difficult to establish a clear-cut cause-effect relationship between air pollutants and impairment of health. It is perhaps not too surprising that the ecological approach currently in fashion seems to be a much more powerful tool in defining cause-effects relationships. Without belaboring the point, we would like to point out that establishing such cause-effect relationships have tremendous legal and financial implications e.g., consider the possible establishment of such a relationship between pollution and inadvertent weather modification.

Due to workability difficulties, people have begun to use iron ore much later than gold, copper and bronze. In addition, iron and steel products are the most commonly used metals which are necessary for human life today. It is a fact that iron ore is raw material of the steel production process as known. Iron&Steel sector is plays an important role in the economic development of countries all over the world. Therefore, the amount of production and consumption of steel is one of the basic indicators of industrialization all over the world. The amount of steel consumed per capita of the country is considered as a measure of development. The world average per capita consumption of steel is around 210 kg in 2007 (Yildiz, 2009).

"During the last ten years great strides have been made, on the Mesabi Range, in the practice of beneficiating low grade iron ore material. By .beneficiation is meant all methods of removing impurities, and raising the iron content to a point where it can be sold in open market, the principal impurities being silica and moisture. The • general processes to which low grade iron ores are amenable are as follows:1. Thermal(a) Drying ; removes hydroscopic or atmospheric moisture. .(b) Calcining; removes carbon dioxide from iron carbonate, molecular water from hydrated hematites, and atmospheric moisture.Roasting; removes sulphur, carbon dioxide, molecular water and atmospheric moisture.Agglomeration; primarily for the purpose of preparing finely divided material for blast furnace; briquetting and sintering.2. MechanicalScreen sizing; removes rock and sand.Classification; removes sand by means of currents of water of varying velocities.Log washing; removes fine sand.Jigging; removes larger particles of impurities than is possible by log washing. Certain types of jigs remove fine sand.Reciprocating tables; recover fine iron particles from sand discarded by above processes.Magnetic separation; applicable to the commercial separation of the magnetic oxide of iron from gangue material. From a scientific standpoint it is possible to separate certain hematites and limonites from their gangue:(g) Miscellaneous processes; comprise dry concentration, electro-static separation and other processes."
