An article entitled "The Rule of the Geologist in the Industrial Mineral Field" by G. R. Gullet, was published in the August, 1967, issue of the Canadian Mining Journal. Mr. Gullet defined industrial minerals as follows: "Industrial minerals are largely non-metallic minerals and rocks that find value because of their physical or chemical properties." This definition is brief, but all-inclusive. Mr. Gullet continues, "They include all useful minerals and mineral commodities except those used as fuels and those from which metals are extracted. Factors in the evaluation of an industrial mineral deposit are generally as different from those used in the evaluation of a metal deposit as is the assessment of a potential oil field. The key to the successful development of an industrial mineral, deposit is more often a balance of accessibility, transport, and proximity to markets than to any natural quality advantage of the deposit itself."

Investigations have been carried out to evolve a grinding aid useful in grinding a 40% iron-bearing magnetite containing quartz as the major gangue, based on studies conducted with pure magnetite, pure quartz and its synthetic mixture. These investigations established that an addition of 200 g of CaO per metric ton of ore was the most effective in grinding quartz preferentially over magnetite at 75% solids concentration by weight. The limited rheological studies conducted suggest that the effect could either be due to dispersion or the structural modification of quartz. More importantly, a new concept, that of Critical Solids Concentration, where two different minerals behave like one with respect to response to communication in a tumbling mill, has been introduced for the, first time. Above this concentration, one of the minerals is ground at a faster rate than the other, whereas the reverse is the case below this concentration.

A variety of dynamic failure cases with regional impact were described at a bump symposium held in 1958. These types of events, while rare, are of particular interest because their ability to impact a large area has disaster potential. These cases can be grouped into two broad classes of events by mechanism. These are (1) a slip along steeply dipping faults and (2) the fracturing of strong strata above or below the coal seam. Both failure modes produce dynamic or “shock” loads on the perimeter (roof, rib and floor) of mine openings. Special consideration should be given to these failure modes in the planning of deep coal mines, since their occurrence is not within the professional experience of many contemporary workers. In addition, their potential is not evaluated by many of the analysis tools commonly used to evaluate hazards in coal mine plans.

Fan stall is a notorious phenomenon of axial flow fans. When multiple fans of this type serve a ventilation system, their mutual impacts on the stability of the ventilation system are very complicated and not well understood. Results from laboratory experiments indicated that, when a fan is working across its stall zone (i.e., the pronounced trough on the fan characteristic curve), some branches in the system may suffer abrupt and even drastic changes in air quantity and pressure. The quantity range of the fan that causes the abrupt change is called an unstable operating range. The corresponding quantity range of a branch is called a nonachievable quantity range of the branch, because any quantity within this range cannot be achieved without changing some parameters of the ventilation system (e.g., branch resistances). This paper discusses these important characteristics of ventilation systems by using results from tests on laboratory tubing networks.

"To explore blast furnace slag as a secondary resource for rare earth elements (REEs), blast furnace slag containing lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), erbium (Er) and neodymium (Nd) in concentrations of 17, 16, 4 and 44 ppm, respectively, was processed with sulfuric acid while optimizing the parameters of acid concentration, temperature and pulp density. The experiments showed that recovery rates of 92, 36, 35 and 52 percent for La, Ce, Nd and Er, respectively, were achieved at 1 to 5 weight/volume (w/v) percent pulp density using particles smaller than 250 µm and treating with 1 M sulfuric acid for one hour at room temperature. Raising the temperature to 95 °C promoted the dissolutions of Ce and Nd to 89 and 84 percent, respectively, for the same 1 M acid concentration and one-hour duration at 5 w/v percent pulp density. Cyanex 923 was preferred over Cyanex 301 for the purification of REEs from leach liquor. In another route, the leach liquor was subjected to precipitation with 0.5 to 1 M oxalic acid, resulting in a product with 4 to 5 percent concentration of REEs.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are important materials in numerous high-technology applications, but they have high supply risk, giving rise to the study of new sources. The recycling of REEs has been well researched, especially on a small scale, but has not been widely implemented. Less than 1 percent of REEs were recycled in 2011 (Binnemans et al., 2013). REEs occur in a large number of minerals in oxidic compounds, such as oxides, carbonates, phosphates and silicates, and are present as mixtures at 10 to 300 mg/kg concentrations in many rock formations, such as basalts, granites, gneisses, shales and silicate rocks. The most abundant REE in the Earth’s crust is cerium (Ce), at a concentration of 20 to 70 mg/kg, followed by neodymium (Nd) and lanthanum (La), with heavier REEs being less abundant (Binnemans et al., 2013). D-LM at Mobile The qualified success of iron ore pelletizing processes has influenced considerations for production of highly beneficiated fur¬nace charges. Such beneficiation would necessarily involve some forms of chemical and perhaps thermal conversion for production of prereduced pellets, preheated pellets, precalcined pellets, and perhaps pellets which contain all of the above features as preheated, prereduced, precalcined products. This type of furnace burden will be adapted within a new ironmaking process to be activated commer¬cially during the latter part of 196$ in Mobile, Alabama. This process will integrate a new pelletizing system with an electric smelting furnace and the pellets will be comprised of a composite charge blended from metallurgical proportions of iron ore, coal, and limestone. Under contract to the U. S. -Department of.-Interior, Office of Coal. Research, Hittman Associates recently completed a 16 month study of the environmental-factors associated with the siting, construction, and operation of large scale coal refineries. (1 2) The objective of this study was to identify the environmental effects and to define the magnitude of these effects and the approaches which can be used to mitigate adverse environmental consequences. In the study, the five major coal bearing regions of the country having reserves adequate to support a number of large scale coal refineries were considered. The regions considered were: Appalachian, Eastern Interior, Fort Union, Powder River, and Four Corners.

Resumen ¦ Un sistema de comunicaciones “a través del suelo” (TTE) comercial y disponible fue evaluado en una mina de carbón subterránea en la zona Este del Estado de Kentucky. Este estudio de campo fue realizado como parte de una evaluación multisitio mayor de sistemas TTE disponibles. La mina detallada en este estudio se encontraba paralizada al momento de la evaluación, lo que proporcionó la representación más cercana a la realidad del medio ambiente en una mina luego de una operación de cierre. Para este estudio se probaron las comunicaciones superficie a subterráneo y subterráneo a superficie. El despliegue estándar del sistema TTE usando los procedimientos recomendados por el fabricante logró obtener comunicaciones claras y nítidas entre el socavón y la superficie. This paper discusses the basic requirements covering the area between the initial discovery of a deposit and a decision as to whether or not the deposit will support an economically sound mining venture. The procedure for gaining the necessary information and the sequence of steps is in .some respects parallel to gaining like information on deposits other than the sand type. For the sake of simplicity the stages and sequence are presented as follow: first, the initial reconnaissance drilling; second, the exploration drilling to permit initial ore body estimates; third, metallurgical testing; fourth, the estimate of plant and operating costs; and last, the economic balance. The objective of the reconnaissance drilling is to collect sufficient information to reach a decision as to the advisability of further exploration or the abandonment of the area. This initial phase will comprise, in addition to some drilling, a thorough reconnaissance of the area, a study of the best geological and topographic maps of the region, and a study of any literature available, all under the guidance of a geologist.

"Classic engineering economics provides the mining engineer with a fundamental approach to choosing between capital spending alternatives. This approach has been heavily used over the years and is an accepted technique for most investment decisions. There is a shortcoming that I have run into over the 15 year period when I worked in business planning roles. The classic time value of money approaches such as Net Present Value, Return on Investment, and Internal Rate of Return provide good estimates, but the input assumptions may fall short of describing the real material differences required by these analysis techniques. If the cost benefit analysis is defined solely on the improvement of the item being replaced or improved, the true profitability of the decision may be overestimated. Productivity improvement based capital projects can yield more accurate forecasts when conducted in concert with a “bottleneck analysis”. INTRODUCTION A review of the Theory of Constraints, (Goldratt, Cox, 1984) Lean, (Womack, 2003) (Rattner, 2006) and Six Sigma (Cryger, DeFeo 2015) lead us to recognize that these process improvement methodologies are oriented to the manufacturing process. These systems generally involve a factory that the material moves through on the way to becoming a final product. The mining challenge has many similarities to manufacturing once the ore has been won and made ready for processing. Before that point, however, the process is somewhat inverted while the ore is being won. Instead of the material moving through the factory, the factory is moving through the material. The Theory of Constraints (TOC) was used in an underground context by Baafi, Cai and Porter at 2015 APCOM, but even this groups’ analysis did not carry the concept from mining to shipping of the final product. There can be spatially distributed data that can affect the mining throughput constraints, some of which can be determined from exploration results. Identifying constraints can lead us to mapping productivity bottlenecks on future mining. Knowing this may improve decision making by eliminating one of Jim Fishbein’s three deadly sins of strategic planning: incomplete planning. When evaluating capital investment alternatives you should evaluate the impact of any proposed improvements on the entire operation. At the core of any mining system is the materials handling system. This can be typically expressed as the system that handles the raw material from the “face” through processing and then handling the finished product as well as the waste material. A “Bottleneck Analysis” is an investigation into the factors limiting a material handling system’s productivity (Goldratt, Cox, 1984). Mining material handling systems are usually composed of several linked components such as draglines, shovels, loaders, hydraulic excavators, continuous miners, longwalls, highwall miners, bucket wheel excavators, LHDs, feeders, conveyor belts, stockpiles, crushers, processing plants with various circuits, and waste handling systems. Each of the aforementioned components has a slightly different throughput capacity. When these are linked in series, the one with the lowest throughput capacity limits all of the others, creating the bottleneck for the system. Every material handling system has a bottleneck. In the mining environment, a subtle, but very significant phenomenon may also occur. The bottleneck may change as a result of a change in the raw feed qualities, face recession, overburden depth, digability, learning curve, and many others factors which may be derived from the drillhole data. These parameters often change as a function of the location in the reserve base, and may also vary with time."

The phosphate formations of the Pliocene epoch were deposited along the coastal shelf of the eastern seaboard. The deposition of the phosphate is thought to be somewhat contiguous along the early shoreline, and the deposit can be more or less traced over an 800 to 930 mile path from the Florida Gulf Coast, near Ft. Myers, to the Pamlico Sound of North Carolina. This is illustrated in Figure 1. Three areas of commercial importance are currently being exploited from this extensive known deposit: 1 - The so-called ?Bone valley? in Central Florida (multiple operations) 2 - Hamilton County in North Florida (Occidental Corporation operation) 3 - Beaufort County in North Carolina (Texas Gulf Sulphur operation)

Surface coal mining productivity in the U.S. and Illinois has shown a general declining trend since 1969. The U.S. Department of Energy conducted an analysis in 1980 of the causes of declining productivity in different states. This paper presents a detailed analysis of changes in overall productivity and productivity in different functions such as overburden preparation, overburden stripping, reclamation, coal handling, etc. during the period 1970-1982. Statistical analysys techniques including multiple regression were utilized in the study.

One-quarter of a century has passed since the "theory of regionalized variables" (geostatistics) was introduced by G. Matheron (1962, 1963) in France. Yet, only during the past decade has geostatistics found broad acceptance in the mining industry. Foremost among the reasons for this time lag was ignorance. The first English treatise on geostatistics was not written until Matheron (1971), and the first published text accessible to mining professionals did not appear until David (1977). Other significant reasons for the slow acceptance of geostatistics included the conservative nature of management in the 1970s minerals industry, and the fact that conventional ore reserve estimation performs reasonably well when confined to massive deposits of base metal and iron deposits having relatively low coefficients of variation in grades. In short, mine engineers and geologists were not willing to accept a new set of tools for problems that they did not see.

Little faith can be placed in a coal resource estimate without a clear understanding of the estimate's accuracy. Different types of coal resource estimates require different levels of accuracy. Prospecting surveys typically are done with widely spaced boreholes, while a much higher level of accuracy is required for mine design. Either way, a measure of the accuracy clearly indicates the level of confidence that can be placed in the results of the estimate. Geographic information systems (GIs) are becoming a commonly used tool for resource estimation because they not only provide a database management platform but also the graphical capabilities to visualize resource characteristics. interpolation methods used commonly in these resource studies do not typically provide a quantitative answer to the question: "How accurate is the estimate?" By comparing localized measurements at multiple locations to the interpolated thickness distribution used in a resource estimate, a quantitative analysis of accuracy can be obtained. The technique is demonstrated with a case study from Central Appalachia.

In southwest Wyoming lies buried the world's largest source of natural sodium carbonate, or soda ash. Perhaps a hundred billion tons of trona (sodium sesquicarbonate) are contained in ancient lake beds in the Green River basin'). There the Green River Formation encloses more than 40 extensive beds of trona. At least 25 of these exceed 3 feet (1 meter) in thickness and most of them are more than 300 square miles in extent. Five have been exposed in mines and lie between 800 and 1500 feet below the surface. Others lie at depths of from 400 to 3500 feet. Three companies have underground mines that supply trona to adjacent soda ash plants. These are the FMC Corporation, Allied Chemical Corporation, and Stauffer Chemical Company. A fourth, Texasgulf Corporation, has a mine under development. In 1974, annual soda ash capacity in the Green River area was approximately 4,300,000 tons, which requires the mining of about 7,500,000 tons of trona.

CONTAC Engineers is a Chilean based company which works on process control and automation, principally for the minning industry. Jointly with other local and international engineering firms, CONTAC has participated in most of the last expansion and modernization plans being carried out at the Chilean pinning industry. At presente, CONTAC is involved on a research and development plan for the design and implementation of new instrument and process control procedures for mineral process automation. One of these efforts is the design of an ore size analyzer for coarse ore being transported over a conveyor belt. A feasibility and prototype study was made at a SAG Mill Plant and currently a high resolution, high speed analyzer is being developed. It will became available on early 1986.

Mining companies join oil companies, chemical companies, machinery companies, and companies with no other connection to the minerals business. And well they might, for here is a way for both minerals-oriented companies and those that have no background or knowledge of the minerals business to get actively involved in an outwardly-attractive but high-risk enterprise with the chance to participate in a lucrative minerals find. Thus, for reasons beyond those normally associated with joint ventures in many other fields, corporations, companies, groups, and even individuals are looking to joint exploration ventures as the answer to all problems of getting into or staying in mining.

Water is the mainstay for the beneficiation of fine-size coal and minerals, but it is also the least desirable constituent of the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat absorption capacity of the individual particles. When a differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt that has been coated with low-temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt while the relatively cooler component will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal and quartz particles of 6 × 18 mesh size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating and system variables. Preliminary test results show that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

The bucket elevator is probably the oldest known form of conveyor. Its history can be traced back to the days of Babylon where wicker baskets lined with a natural pitch and fastened to ropes operating over wooden sheaves turned by slaves, were used for the elevating of water into irrigation ditches. It is not unnatural for the bucket elevator to be the first in history, for even today engineers and designers recognize that well designed, correctly applied bucket elevators offer unequaled advantages over other bulk material elevating methods. The bucket elevator's vertical design saves valuable floor space. It provides flexibility of machinery layout with lowest initial capital expenditure, which is its principal advantage. While the advantages of the bucket elevator have long been recognized, there has been a tendency to lean away from its use because of high maintenance without reliability. CHAIN Belt Company found that the bucket elevator, if correctly applied, can be built to be as dependable and reliable as any other piece of machinery in today's modern processing plants. It is not difficult to understand why the bucket elevator is looked upon sometimes as a necessary evil in the material handling system. Very little has been published or written about the specific use or application of bucket elevators other than in manufacturers catalogs. Most of today's elevator application was set forth at the turn of the century by Hetzel (1). There have been many improvements made in the manufacturing techniques of elevator components, improvements in material selections, all which can be used to improve today's bucket elevator. To best understand the improvements which have taken place recently in the design and application of bucket elevators, an understanding of basic elevator principles is desirable. In general, it can be said that bucket elevators are classified into two basic types : (1) centrifugal discharge and (2) continuous. Elevators in use today are either of the centrifugal discharge type or the continuous type, or a combination of both in special applications.
