Hazen Research, Inc., has developed a new process for removing pyritic sulfur and ash from coal. Feed coal is contacted with iron carbonyl vapors, Fe(CO)5, at 190°C which puts a thin skin of magnetic material on the pyrite and ash, but does not affect the coal. Thus, low intensity magnetic separators yield a nonmagnetic coal, low in sulfur and ash, and a magnetic refuse, high in sulfur and ash. Results are given for clean coal produced by this method. A comparison is made between results of the magnetic process and the U. S. Bureau of Mines two-stage flotation process cleaning identical samples of Pittsburgh Coal. Capital and operating costs of the two cleaning methods are discussed.

ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. Applying geophysical techniques in potential geothermal areas has received: little attention in the United States, though it is widely used and accepted in New Zealand and Italy. In those countries it has been demonstrated that geophysical surveys can be useful in locating new geothermal areas and in directing test drilling programs. Geophysical studies in a thermal region can provide structural information and, if conditions are right directly; locate subsurface hot waters. They can give indications of sub-alluvial rock types and of the thickness of alluvial cover. In certain cases they can be used to estimate the power potential of a hydrothermal system.

This paper demonstrates the importance of including a discount rate in the determination of the optimum final' depth of an open pit. Without a proper discount rate, a pit will probably end up too deep. Another consideration is future underground mining. If underground mining is profitable, the pit may need to be shallower. Of all of the investments needed, only mining equipment and the underground mine should be included, and amortization and depreciation should not he included in the study.

This paper gives a review of promising technologies for phosphate processing, and covers flotation, analysis and process control, as well as tailings treatment and utilization. Air bubbles of less than a µm in size, combined with relatively large bubbles, have been demonstrated, both in the lab and on a pilot scale, to improve flotation dramatically, by reducing reagent use while improving product grade. Innovative use of polymers has allowed rapid dewatering of fine tailings with a final product that does not segregate. The first online laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyzer was created, allowing rapid analysis of wet samples using the laser technology. Many large commercial projects are successfully pursuing the utilization of phosphogypsum.

The mushroom-shaped Minghu power cavern located in central Taiwan is 21.2 m (W) by 40.5 m (H) by 127.2 m (L) and is designed to house 4 units of power generating-pumping equipment with a total capacity of 1,000 MW. This paper presents an introduction to the geological conditions at the cavern site; the rock mechanical tests undertaken; the design approach adopted; the construction method and sequence followed; and the instrumentation provided in the roof arch to monitor the behavior of the surrounding rocks. The measured data collected from the embedded instruments will be compared with those obtained from theoretical analyses and presented in this paper. Several technical problems encountered during the construction stage are covered and the solutions of these problems are also described therein.

In January 1992, the Office of the US Trade Representative announced that the People's Republic of China had agreed to protect US intellectual property, including computer software, sound recordings, agrichemicals and pharmaceuticals. Under the agreement, China will make significant improvements in its patent, copyright and trade-secret laws. Ambassador Carla A. Hills, the US trade representative, said "this agreement should create significant opportunities for US firms interested in marketing high valued-added products to China." Principal beneficiaries will include the agrichemical and computer industries, as well as pharmaceutical, entertainment. The agreement will safeguard these industries' intellectual property, stimulating new exports to China and helping to generate additional growth in the US. Refractory grade bauxite was included in the mineral category of the $1.5 billion of Chinese products on which the US government threatened to impose an immediate 100% trade tariff. Refractory bauxite is available from Guyana and Brazil at higher cost and in different grades. However, refractory brick manufacturers would have had little choice but to pass on the costs to their consumers. Although the United States and China are separated by political ideology and internal governing structures, this agreement recognizes the importance of a $19 billion trading relationship. Consequently, the renewal of China's most favored-nation trading status in the US congress in -June 1992 was all but assured. Many US companies doing business in China and Hong Kong have been quietly increasing their investments since 1989. These companies can now concentrate on developing sales to the domestic Chinese market. This market is expected to surpass 1.2 billion people in 1995 and approach 1.3 billion by the end of the century.

Although industrial size reduction methods have an energy efficiency of only about 1 percent, methods of size reduction have not changed much for many years. One reason for slow progress has been the oversimple viewpoint that a single law should exist to relate size reduction to energy input. Modern simulation methods decompose the grinding process into a grinding rate function (selection function) and a breakage function. The breakage function is difficult to measure, and it usually requires tracers if it is determined from milling experiments. Prediction of breakage functions from basic principles is one objective of this paper. In this study we focus attention not on the gross energy input to the experiment, but on the spatial distribution of stress energy within the particle. We are led to this viewpoint by experimental observations of a few previous investigators (Bergstrom2, Rumpf3, Axelson4) and our own observations. Oka and Hiramatsu recently used their calculations of stress within particles for prediction of breakage, but again they tried to correlate the size of the fragments with the total stress energy, rather than the approach we propose. We assume that the stress energy is stored in the interior of the particle as the load is increased, until the particle breaks. We assume that each element of the particle breaks into fragments of a mean size that depends on the locally-stored stress energy. Mineral exploration involves the selective collection, organization, evaluation, and interpretation of geologic and economic data. The sources for such data are original field observations and existing documented information of various types (publications, reports, maps, company files, etc.). As exploration data are accumulated, their storage, organization, indexing, and J retrieval is key to exploration progress. Initial use of computers by mineral exploration groups indicates that data can be meaningfully handled by machines. A computer system makes possible: 1) the storage, manipulation, collation, and selective retrieval of data; 2) the utilization of data banks developed by geologic service groups and available at relatively low cost; and 3) the retrieval of stored data more rapidly, completely, and effectively than by manual systems. Profitable utilization of these capabilities is conditioned by several factors, particularly by the information selected for the system data base and by the design of the computer system itself.

The potential of the coal reserves in the western United States for meeting future energy needs has been recognized for quite some time. However, two of the major constraints which have tended to limit the development of these reserves which can only be deep-mined are the great thicknesses of the coal seams encountered and their high pitch. Although new mining methods may need to be developed to recover these reserves, at least in the short- term the industry has to incorporate presently available equipment which were not originally designed for thick-seam mining. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the various equipment that are in use today and their possible application to thick-seam mining. The paper also addresses the various ground control and safety considerations that are unique to thick-seam extraction.

The effects of the operating parameters of media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size and grinding time on the stirred media milling of talc were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw) and energy consumption (Em). Furthermore, after determining the optimum grinding conditions, Box-Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio significantly affects d50 size decrease compared with solid mass fraction and grinding time. The minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.

Power plants that utilize conventional wet flue-gas desulfurization methods produce enormous amounts of flue-gas scrubber sludge. A typical 400 MW power station that burns a high sulfur coal produces 170,000 tons of wet flue-gas scrubber sludge per year. This scrubber sludge is currently landfilled at an enormous cost to utility companies. This material could be used as a raw material for industries that use gypsum, such as the wallboard and plaster industries. However, before it can be used as feedstock for these industries, some of the impurities such as unreacted limestone and silicates must be removed from the scrubber sludge. Froth flotation has tremendous potential for separating these impurities from scrubber sludge. In order to select an optimum flotation process, it is necessary to characterize the surface properties of the major components in the scrubber sludge, which consist of calcium sulfite, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate (limestone), and silica. In this study zeta potential measurements were used to determine the surface charge of the components in scrubber sludge, with the goal of optimizing a froth flotation process to produce a marketable gypsum product for the wallboard and plaster industries.

The ability to identify hazards during a workplace examination is a critical skill for mineworkers to have in order to maintain a safe workplace. While research suggests that being able to successfully recognize hazards requires a complex set of competencies, it is unclear which competencies are most critical to adequately perform a workplace examination. This paper presents a hazard recognition competencies framework as an explanation of the competencies that affect mineworker hazard recognition. To better understand how the industry is selecting and preparing workplace examiners, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) interviewed nine health and safety (H&S) professionals at surface stone, sand and gravel mine sites throughout the United States. These interviews verified that the competencies included in the hazard recognition competencies framework agree with perceptions of the interviewed H&S professionals, who also provided validity for the critical role these competencies play. Finally, the results of this study are presented within the context of current NIOSH research findings related to hazard recognition.

This paper emphasizes the chemical principles and the influence of various chemical structures behind slurry rheology control chemicals. Particular examples are shown which correlate chemical structure modifications to environmental factors involved in grinding such as pH, shear, ore type, water chemistry, and particle size.

INTRODUCTION The most serious occupational radiation episode in U.S. history was the exposure of uranium miners to radon daughters in the 1945-1968 time period. Although the maximum permissible dose at that time was 12 WLM (working level months) per year, average exposures were several times that figure, and ten times higher exposures were not uncommon. Starting in the early 1960s, mounting epidemiological evidence appeared for an excess incidence of lung cancer among these miners; up to 1974, there was an excess of 134 cases (159 observed vs 25 expected) among the 4000 in the group under study (NAS-1980). When this excess became apparent, the Federal Government took jurisdiction, greatly tightened enforcement, and in 1969 lowered the maximum permissible exposure to 4 WLM per year. These standards were met largely by a great improvement in ventilation. As a result of these measures, average miner exposures were reduced 5-fold from 1965 to 1968 and by another factor of 3 by 1970. In 1978, the 4 WLM/year maximum permissible exposure was exceeded by only 37 of 7500 underground miners, for only 16 wars it exceeded by more than 25%, and for only 8 was it exceeded by 502 (AIF-1980). The average exposures to the various groups are listed in Table 1. We see that the average exposure for all miners was 1.03 WLM, and for those who worked essentially full time underground it was 1.45 WLM. For purpose of later discussion, it will be convenient to choose a single value for average exposures. In view of the fact that employment situations and job categories are bound to vary over a lifetime of work, we take this to be 1.3 WLM/year. The purpose of this paper is not to dwell on history, but rather to address the question of whether or not this present situation is satisfactory. This question was considered recently by a study group under the auspices of National Institue of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH-1980) and it answered the question in the negative, concluding that the maximum permissible exposure should be substantially reduced. However, their arguments were incomplete and were lacking in perspective. The principal thrust of this paper is to provide some of the material overlooked. RISK TO URANIUM MINERS FROM RADON EXPOSURE In order to quantify the risk to uranium miners under present working conditions, it is first necessary to estimate the risk of lung cancer per WLM of exposure. The most straightforward way of doing this is to use the data on the group of uranium miners under study. These are listed in Table 2 for 8 exposure ranges and for the total group (NAS-1980). If all data are given equal weight, the risk is seen to be 3.5 x 10-6 per year per WLM. Much can be said in favor of using this value for the risk as dose independent; it is within one standard deviation (SD) of the observations in 5 of the 8 dose categories (as expected from the definition of SD), and within 2 SD for all 8, and for the three cases differing from the mean by more than one SD, two are above and one is below. However, the uranium miner exposures in the present situation will be far below those covered in Table 2, so it is worth considering the possibility that the risk differs from this at low doses. From the last column of Table 2 we see that the experience from all exposures below 600 WLM indicates a risk higher than the mean for the entire group by more than two standard deviations (the value 600 WLM in this comparison was deliberately chosen to maximize this deviation; for exposures below 360 WLM and 840 WLM, the excess is only 1.0 and 1.6 standard deviations respectively). In view of this tendency for the risk to be higher at lower dose, we will take the risk to be 5.0 x 10-6 per year per WLM in what we will refer to as model A. Flow models are used to predict the extraction efficiency of metals in rock piles. These models typically use hydraulic parameters obtained through column studies, which assume that the material in the column wholly represents the entire pile and the parameters can be upscaled several orders of magnitude for model evaluation. This assumption fails for parameters that are spatially variable or scale dependent. To overcome these issues, measurements made directly on the heap at the appropriate model scale can be made with the electrical resistivity method. The method aims to map the variations in the electrical resistivity, which can be associated with moisture content, degree of fines, metal content, and leachate concentration. We present an example of calibrating the resistivity with borehole measurements of moisture using geostatistics to show how the resistivity method can be used to obtain a spatial moisture distribution. It was shown that cokriging the resistivity and moisture together gives a more reliable distribution.

The seismic refraction technique is probably the most popular geophysical method of bedrock profiling in geotechnical site investigations but is somewhat restricted by the inherent assumptions in the method. This paper describes how Hales' method of profile interpretation is modified to overcome the assumptions of increasing velocity and layer thickness with depth when only first arrival data is available. A further expansion of Hales method enables presentation of refraction data in a form whereby bedrock features, such as changes in velocity, relief and dip in particular, are more readily recognized. Characteristic curves of the more common bedrock features are presented as an aid to bedrock feature recognition.

A seismic refraction survey of selected environs of Brewster Phosphate's Lonesome mine near Bradley, FL identified various layers of overburden, minable matrix (ore body) and basement (i.e., bedrock) that correlated with core logs. Bivariate correlation procedures determined that statistical relations existed between mining parameters and seismic velocities. For instance, a correlation of approximately -0.6 was inferred between P wave velocity and ore grade.
