The expansion of gold production in Nevada's Carlin Trend over the last few years has been staggering. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the mine engineering group at Newmont Gold. Organizational changes were implemented by the company to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems. Specially developed computer software and its applications will be explained in this article as well as improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves. Scheduling procedures for the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities will likewise be presented. Ore control procedures and current mine engineering practices are discussed. Growth at Newmont Gold Expansion of production levels at Newmont Gold Co. was brought about primarily by the economic incentive to exploit increased reserves. The examination of relatively well behaved distributions subject to truncation by a cutoff grade in the mine clearly demonstrates that a bias is inevitably introduced when the selection is based on the results of samples which are subject to even the most idealised error distribution. The idealised error used in this paper is assumed to be normally distributed with a mean of zero and is thus unbiased. The bias introduced can be minimised but it cannot be eradicated. A better understanding of the bias can lead to improved procedures for mine sampling, sample preparation, assaying and estimation of selection units which will not only reduce the discrepancy but more significantly will increase the efficiency of mining selection and hence profitability.

GeoBiotics, LLC and Kumba Resources (Pty) Ltd are jointly developing the GEOCOAT® heap bioleaching technology and downstream processing technology for recovery of zinc from tailings at the Rosh Pinah Mine in Namibia. This paper outlines the development of a computer simulation for the bioleaching of sphalerite and the downstream processing. Computer modeling has shortened the product development cycle by allowing many flowsheet scenarios to be analyzed negating much of the expensive and time consuming laboratory testing. A model was developed using the Limn® system which is an Excel® Add-In flowsheet drawing and solution engine. Given that most engineers are familiar with Excel® this software is extremely easy to use and has less hidden calculations making model verification much easier.

Phosphorus may be incorporated into sedimentary rocks in at least four different ways: (1) by the accumulation of detrital mineral fragments, (2) by the accumulation of phosphatic organic debris, (3) by diagenesis and (4) perhaps by the primary precipitation of calcium phosphate. Based-on the petrographic examination of Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments from the northern and central parts of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, Diagenesis is the most important of these mechanisms. Both syndiagenesis and epidiagenesis are required to explain the origin of all the diagenetic phosphate mineral species which occur in the northern and central parts of the coastal plain. Syndiagenesis produced much of the coastal plain's apatite. It was operative below the sediment-water interface while the substrate was being compacted. Compaction forced pore waters, which were enriched in phosphate by the decomposition of organic matter, upward through calcareous sediments. The PO43- radicle replaced the CO23- and calcareous nodules, pellets and shell fragments were converted to apatite. Epidiagenetic reactions occurred in the subaerial environment where downward percolating meteoric waters carried phosphate in solution to cites where cation activity was sufficiently high to form new minerals. Vivianite may form where ferrous iron is available and wavellite and variscite may form in the presence of aluminum rich minerals. Textural evidence suggests that many of the reactions were repeated. The present day appearance of apatite, vivianite, wavellite and variscite in the coastal plain may represent several generations of diagenesis.

Personnel at Utah Copper Division's Bingham Canyon Mine use current computing technology to compile pertinent production statistics and mining plans. Within hours after the day's work has been completed, concise reports summarizing the previous day's production statistics, actual production vs. budget statistics, the location of shovels relevant to the mining plan, the performance of equipment, equipment next scheduled for maintenance, etc. are available at the terminals located throughout the mine. Also, engineering personnel us e computerized systems, directly from their offices, to assist them in the timely development of mining plans. Timely and concise reporting and planning capabilities such as these assist mine personnel in their efforts to review mining progress and equipment performance, and as such they are in a better position to detect adverse trends early and to seek appropriate resources or make changes in plans or practices.

Introduction Modern longwall mining, introduced to the US coal industry in the mid-1960s, is the latest coal mining technique. Today, longwall mining produces more than 15% of all underground coal production. The growth of longwall mining in the US is slow. However, nearly two decades of longwall mining have demonstrated that its benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Longwall Advantages Production and Economics - A typical longwall production ranges mostly from 0.9 to 1.8 kt (1000 to 2000 st) of clean coal per shift. This is about three to six times the production of comparable continuous mining units. Furthermore, there are much less rejects in longwall mining, typically 15% to 25%. It must be noted, however, that a new longwall with an inexperienced crew may produce less, depending on mining conditions. But as experience gains, production increases rapidly. Due to its high production, the cost per ton of coal mined over the mine's lifetime is cheaper with longwall mining than with continuous mining. A study on a conceptual mine of 25 year life using actual operational data (Dangerfield, 1981) concluded that the cost per ton of coal mined is 32% cheaper by longwall than by continuous mining. Another benefit from its high production potential is that it enables the production to be concentrated in a few longwall faces versus many units of continuous mining required to achieve a similar production. As a result, mine organization and management simplify considerably. Safety and Savings - Most US longwalls use shield supports that cover the roof with solid canopy and isolate a gob completely from the face area. Thus, if the supports are properly selected and operated, the potential for roof fall accident is almost zero. Furthermore, it is not unusual that a well-run longwall face is much more orderly and cleaner that most well-run machine shops. The ventilation system for longwall mining is the most ideal type. It is simple and unique. No auxiliary fans are required. The fresh air sweeps through the whole face. Its volume and velocity can be adjusted as demanded. Recovery - In spite of multiple entries layout for US longwall panels, the longwall method recovers up to 40% more coal than the continuous mining method (Dangerfield, 1981). The typical recovery for longwall mining is 70% to 85% versus 45% to 80% for continuous mining. Versatility - Longwall mining has been employed successfully in seam heights ranging from 0.8 to 3.7 m (2.7 to 12 ft); in seam inclinations from horizontal to 35°; in overburden depths from 46 to 914 m (150 to 3000 ft); in single or multiple seam mining; and in uniform or irregular seam characteristics. For seam height less than 1.2 m (4 ft), the plow is used instead of a shearer. However, in spite of recent developments, the plow still is unsuitable for hard coal seams. Slow Acceptance How come longwall mining, with so many advantages, has not spread more rapidly? Undoubtedly, the major reason is the large capital investment required. Under normal market conditions, the capital required for a longwall panel ranges from $7 to $11 million. Another factor is the uncertainty of its applicability to any specific coal seam of interest where longwall has not been used or operated successfully. Although longwall mining elsewhere has proven its applicability to wide-ranging seam conditions, there have been several failures in the past two decades. Analyses of those cases show that most failures can be attributed to inexperience, both operational and technical, including equipment selection. Therefore, personnel training on the longwall mining technique is absolutely necessary before its initial operation. Some earlier statements about adverse surface subsidence associated with longwall mining were misleading. Research has proven that surface subsidence under longwall mining is controllable and predictable. And, if longwall mining was mandatory since the onset of coal mining in the US, there would be no surface subsidence problems over abandoned mined land today. Represented is the full range of international, national, regional, state and local associations...including trade associations, professional societies, philanthropic organizations and others. The dramatic growth of ASAE during the past 15 years is a manifestation of the growth of the association movement during the past two decades. This is not to imply that associations are a new phenomenon, because they have existed for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations show evidence of groups formed for mutual protection and advancement. In the transition from ancient to medieval time, trade associations and guilds came to serve an important function for the craftsmen and merchants they represented, encouraging the growth of new industries, improved processes and education.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Project was established in 1975 by the Department of Energy (DOE) under Public Law 193 to develop the necessary technology for safe disposal of radioactive wastes from the defense programs of the U.S. The technology development involves extensive theoretical, numerical, and laboratory programs, as well as construction of the WIPP facility in southeastern New Mexico for in situ testing and waste storage demonstration. If after the demonstration, the facility is found to comply with regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency, then the facility will become a repository for Transuranic (TRU) waste. The underground portion of the facility is 655 m beneath the ground surface in massive natural salt deposits of the Salado formation, as shown in Figure 1.

When we were asked to prepare a paper on gold to be part of the Economics of Precious Metals session, our immediate thought was that we should address the question of supply. Are the existing mines of the world capable of filling the demand for gold? We recognized that gold does not conform to the normal pressures of supply and demand. Major new sources of production and increased sales might have a very short term effect and depress the price but this does not last very long. Those forces that affect gold prices are very different from the ones economists normally deal with. Factors such as mass psychology, political tensions and fear are certainly more important to the gold price than supply and demand in today's world.

Two-phase (water and air) flow in a self-aspirated WEMCO flotation machine has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The geometric model is a replica of a 300 m3 cell. A 72-degree sector containing two blades of the ten-blade rotor has been modeled and periodic boundary conditions are applied in the circumferential direction. Simulation of a sector of the machine allows acceptable resolution of the mean flow field using 4x106 grid points. The flow is modeled by Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using a commercial software ANSYS-CFX5 [1]. Unsteady simulations have been performed. In a self-aspirated machine, airflow rate is not known a prior; it is an output from the CFD simulation. Uniform mean bubble diameter of 0.7 mm has been specified as an input for the simulation. Air flow rate and power consumption have been monitored with time, and results indicate a stable operation. Air volume fraction contours and velocity field in different regions of the machine are presented and discussed.

Spontaneous combustion is one of the most important safety issues in the global coal industry. It is considered to be a trigger for explosions in underground mines, especially for gassy mines. This thermal event is not easily detectable in the gob and sealed area. It is also a tough job to find the most likely hot point accurately. Admittedly, determination of the propensity for spontaneous combustion before mining activity should be a necessary step in the design of a mine and ventilation plan. However, due to the complexity of the chemical and physical properties of coal, spontaneous combustion has not been fully understood. According to a proximate analysis of coal, it is believed that sulfur and volatile matter in coal are the main intrinsic factors that cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal?s self-heating should be quantified. This study aims to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying a coal?s propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model?s ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture content in the coal ? three important factors affecting a coal?s self-heating process. Based on the law of energy conservation, heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built into the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature are calibrated with adiabatic testing data extracted from the literature for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation, respectively. From the modeling results, it is found that the higher the pyrite content the coal contains and the more moisture that condenses in an environment with high relative humidity and initial temperature, the higher the potential for spontaneous combustion.

For centuries Thailand has been a significant, though primarily unofficial, producer of gold. Panning has been the traditional way of making a living for innumerable villagers during the December to May dry season following the harvest. During this period groups can be seen working the streams, rivers, fields and dry valleys at as many as 90 localities in 28 provinces. Attesting to their efforts are the five and a half ton solid gold Buddha at Wat Trimit and much of the gold jewelry sold in Bangkok. This traditional panning will continue, and probably become more extensive, in harmony with commercial endeavors using modern technology suitable for extraction of gold from types of deposits for which gravity separation would give very low recoveries. Several such deposits have been discovered in the course of geochemical and geological surveys conducted by the Royal Thai Department of Mineral Resources with the object of contributing to early interpretation of the results of a country-wide airborne survey.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in cooperation with mine operators, conducted a study of heat stress exposures among mine rescue workers in underground mines. Mine rescue workers face extreme heat loads as they enter hot and poorly ventilated environments, particularly when they are wearing breathing apparatuses. The burden of wearing a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA), the inability to drink fluids for extended periods of time, and the potential for ventilation disruptions and fires combine to increase the risk of heat illness during a response to an emergency. In this research, ambient environmental conditions and heat strain indicators were measured using conventional ventilation monitoring tools during mine rescue training exercises. Heat strain was measured with an ingestible temperature-sensing pill that measured core temperature continuously. In addition, a heart-rate monitoring chest strap was used to indicate physical strain resulting from physical activity and heat. Both core temperature and heart rate data were trans-mitted to a remote recorder worn by a rescuer and time-stamped. Team activities were also observed to determine the contribution of work rate to a person’s total heat load. The effectiveness of several engineering controls, such as cooling the air inhaled by rescuers through an apparatus, wearing cooling vests, and supplying water through the CCBA masks, were investigated. Administrative controls, such as limiting the duration of exposure and controlling the work rate through forced-rest regimens, were also evaluated. Results to date are discussed, and tools for evaluating team condition and estimating the length of time it would be safe for rescuers to work are proposed.

A seismic fissuration index (K) is defined as the ratio of the difference in the P and S wave velocities obtained when a dry rock specimen is tested both under a load equal to half the uniaxial compressive strength of the rock (Vo) and without an applied load (Vd) to the velocity obtained without an applied load (Vd), as K = (Vo - Vd)/Vd. A similar seismic fissuration index is also proposed for classifying the dry rock mass in terms of field seismic velocities. The field equation is extended by including the intact rock seismic velocities. K is found to be related to the porosity of rocks. The proposed equation can equally be used for characterizing saturated rocks, using S-wave velocities. However, the time average equation should be used for characterizing saturated rocks, using P-wave velocities, even though this equation gives upperbound estimates of the rock material and fracture porosities.

The on-stream analysis of phosphorus and silica has not been possible by XRF techniques and only recently has some success been indicated with quantitative XRD for P. Yet there has been a recognized need for an on-stream analysis of P and acid insoluble to permit the automatic control of phosphate rock flotation plants which produce some 30-40 million tons of concentrate each year in the southeastern U.S. IMC Fertilizer, Inc., the largest U.S. phosphate rock producer, embarked on a program to develop such an on-stream analysis capability several years ago. Following many months of lab and prototype development, the first commercial installations started in December 1986 and now have completed some 400,000 analyses with surprising accuracy, precision and reliability. The use of these devices in the improved control of the phosphate flotation plant is currently receiving some very serious attention at IMC.

Lingering effects of the 1990 oil shock that included overbuilding and corporate and individual financial distress caused the Gross Domestic Product to fall slightly to $5.67 billion (US billion = l09). With 254 million people - 697,000 in mining and petroleum - the US has more than 100 million dwelling units and 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts fell 15% to one million units. New car production fell 11 % to 5.4 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8% to 3.4 million units. The inflation rate was 3%, while the prime rate of interest was 8.5%. The Producer Price Index (1982 = 100) changed as follows: -fuels and related products and power down 1% to 8l, • metals and metal products down 2% to 120, • chemicals and allied products up 2% to 126, and • non-metallic mineral products up to 2% to 117. Energy Imports of crude and refined petroleum, costing $50 billion, fell 5% to 2.8 billion bbl. Domestic petroleum production rose 1% to 3.6 billion bbl. Petroleum supplied about 39% of US energy, natural gas 24% and coal 22%. The National Energy Strategy was announced in February 1991. Its purpose is to encourage domestic production of fossil fuels and nuclear and renewable energy and to stimulate efficiencies in use. Congress continued to debate the strategy and took no action. Coal production fell 3% to 902 Mt (994 million st). About 60% of that came from surface operations. Seventy-eight percent of the total was used to generate electricity and 3% was coked.

Maintaining pH, a routine requirement in many industrial processes, is by no means trivial. The control is troublesome because of the inherent nonlinearity and frequently changing process dynamics. Many researchers in the past have investigated advanced on-line estimation and/or adaptive control techniques to overcome these difficulties. Most methods require the development of a complex mathematical model. The present work deals with the use of a simple and elegant method for pH control, based on the use of fuzzy logic. First, a standard fuzzy-logic controller is discussed, followed by a self-organizing controller. The latter algorithm generates a set of rules based on observation of the process. Thus it is a learning algorithm. The development and application of the algorithms to a laboratory acid-base neutralization experiment are presented. This elegant technique is powerful and deserves attention in mineral pro- cessing.

Sedimentary dolomitic phosphate ores are difficult to treat by flotation, and high-grade phosphate concentrates with high recoveries are difficult to obtain. The literature indicates that the reagents required for beneficiation of such ores are generally dictated by the nature of the gangue. In this paper, the optimum flotation parameters necessary for enhancing the grade and recovery of a typical low-grade dolomitic rock phosphate ore from Jhamarkotra, Rajasthan, are highlighted. The standard design-of-experiment (DOE) technique was used to obtain empirical models for both grade and recovery. The model equations were then used for optimizing the flotation parameters, including pH, percent solids, collector dosage and depressant dosage. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that a phosphate concentrate containing about 36% P205, with a recovery greater than 95%, can be obtained in a single-stage by the reverse flotation of carbonaceous minerals at the optimized conditions. An open pit mine design system should have the characteristics of being flexible, versatile, and simple. All of these characteristics are necessary for producing a dynamic mine design. In other words, a design that can be improved, updated, and implemented. Flexibility is an important characteristic due to changing times. For example, the effects of a changing economy, increased knowledge of the mineral deposit, or improvements in mining technology can result in a considerable, if not a complete change in the long range mining plans. Since the short range mining plans are based on the long range mining plans, they will-also be effected. Also, it is very important to validate the information used in the design or the design itself. This means the system should have the flexibility of being able, not only to detect, but to correct errors. Versatility is another important characteristic of a mine design system due to the wide range of situations that may appear. First, a design system must be able to handle both long and short term planning. This is necessary because of the variability in the definition of a time range. Second, a design system must be able to handle different types of deposits. Special emphasis must be placed on this issue, because many deposits, if not the majority, do not fit predefined categories such as bedded, massive, or roll-front, etc . . . Furthermore, the true test of the versatility of a design system is not only the ability to create an ultimate design but also to schedule sequences for this design. Thus, the versatility of being capable to design with a variety of time ranges, variety of deposit types, and scheduling are all important characteristics of the design system.
