"The cut-off grade is one of the important parameters of mining production. Different material cut-off grade is directed to different destinations. Based on reasonable and optimal cut-off grade, long term mining plan and investment decision analysis can be made for mining managers. In view of multiple-metals open-pit, the paper has proposed that multiple-metals cut-off grade optimization model is set using the objective function to maximize net present value (NPV). The method of equivalent coefficient calculation is proposed to convert multi-metals cut-off grade optimization to a single metal cut-off grade optimization. Then the optimization model is applied in a molybdenum and tungsten large open-pit mine in china. The parameters of concentrate price are calculated by PRT in the model and the curve of grade-recovery rate is analyzed and studied according to actual production data. Based on 3D metal deposit model, the distribution of grade-tonnage is analyzed. At final step, an optimal cut-off grade is proposed to guarantee to maximize NPV. The example shows that the model of multiple-metals cut-off grade optimization can provide reasonable analysis for optimal multi-metals cut-off grade and develop optimal production strategies. Introduction Cut-off grade is one of the most important parameters in metal ore mining because of its influence on the overall economic profit of mining production. Along with the development of the mining production, dynamic optimization of cut-off grade is necessary through the analysis of technical economy. It is better to manage the mining production according to the variation of market. The cut-off grade plays an important role in mining production."

During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, Santa Rita, New Mexico, local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between leach solutions and the copper-bearing material would determine, in great part, the recovery of values. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers), and mathematical or laboratory model studies. These methods have not proved completely satisfactory for the studies now being developed. Investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drill holes, which are petro¬leum exploration and development techniques for locating fluids and measuring porosity in the subsurface. Standard oil field logging equipment was leased, modified, and tested. After successful testing, the equipment was purchased for additional studies. Applications and results of the methods are described in this paper.

An availability approach for determining the capacity of a major Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system to be used in the Yuabaoshan Surface Coal Mine in China is presented in this paper. Based on previous studies on other BWE systems for delay times due to internal and external causes and a four-level maintenance and repair schedule, a model was developed, taking into account all random failures, to present a fast and simple solution to this highly complex problem. A procedure employing the Markov renewal theory for determination of the distribution of random failure times and failure rate of the whole system, as well as some other factors useful for calculation of the overall system capacity, are discussed.

Substantial progress has been made over the last ten years in the development of uniform national and international standards covering the definition, estimation and public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Agreement between the major participating countries has been reached, which include the requirement that a Competent Person prepares and approves publication of mineral resources and reserves. Most national regulatory organizations have accepted the new standards and have included them in the rules that must be followed by mining companies operating under their jurisdiction. These developments are the result of a concerted effort on the part of professional societies, national regulatory agencies, international organizations, and many dedicated individuals. The historical development of these standards is summarized in this paper. Accepted definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves are discussed, as well as the definition and role of the Competent Person. Additional effort is needed before the international standards are fully understood, accepted and followed by mining companies, regulatory agencies, the investment community and the general public. Steps being taken toward development of a Mineral Reserves International Reporting Code Template (International Template) that will be available for all countries to use in deriving their specific country reporting codes, are outlined

Liquids containing suspended solids are encountered in most mineral processing applications. Solids levels cover a very wide range, from ppm levels in cooling water systems to slurries containing greater than 70% solids. When the aqueous phase is recycled or further processed, a solid/liquid separation process is used. Chemical additives used to carry out this process are called coagulants and flocculants. In other cases, one seeks to control or modify the properties of the suspension. Dispersants are chemicals used to aid in suspending solids in a liquid as well as to control the properties of the resulting suspension. Dispersants find a range of uses in mining and mineral processing such as scale control, filter aids, flotation aids, and slurry viscosity modification. Materials used as dispersants include inorganic salts, alkalies, organic surfactants, and polyelectrolytes. This paper discusses the use of dispersants in mineral processing, with an emphasis on control of slurry viscosity. The mechanism of dispersion and factors that affect the choice of dispersant will be discussed.

Evidently, Mr. Thayer had left it to Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway to work out the details The next morning Greenway asked me to come to his office and told me that he and Dr. Ricketts had discussed the question and that Anaconda would make me an offer I could not refuse. They proposed to pay me almost $1000 a month, more than twice my current salary. They had agreed that I should stay with Calumet and Arizona for the rest of the year to help with Bisbee development and anything I could to assist with the New Cornelia plans and construction Of course I could not turn down such a flattering offer, as I had about reached the limit of advancement with a much smaller company in anything save a high executive job, and it would be a long time before I could be ready to change from exploration and geology to operating. Greenway and I agreed that I would stay with him for the remaining eight months of 1916 without any particular title but helping in any way I thought would be most useful. NIOSH researchers and an industry partner conducted an investigation to study the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions in mining. The study required a significant commitment of time and resources from the cooperating site, Bridger Coal Company. This paper focuses on some of the challenges faced by the researchers and their cooperator. Challenges included the need to redesign methods of identifying and prioritizing injuries, and the need to train the workforce in ergonomics while still maintaining progress and interest in the process. The authors discuss some practical interventions implemented by Bridger Coal to date, and discuss future research implications brought about by PacifiCorp’s Generation Business Unit, who monitored the project to determine whether an employee-owned ergonomic process could be implemented throughout their operations.

Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health integrated the results of studies from a seismic tomographic survey, a finite-difference analysis, laboratory measurements of compression wave (ultrasonic) velocities in rock cores, and site geology to evaluate the use of seismic tomography for identifying induced pressures in an underground pillar at the Edgar Mine, Idaho Springs, CO. The key findings were that (1) the seismic tomograms showed that seismic velocities in rock adjacent to mine openings were low, (2) a difference tomogram in which in situ stresses on the east and west sides of the slot were compared showed that velocities increased west of the slot but decreased east of the slot, (3) geologic features (rock types and a fault) identified through geologic mapping were recognizable in the seismic tomograms, (4) ultrasonic velocity measurements on the rock cores agreed with seismic velocity measurements in the tomograms, and (5) results from a finite-difference analysis compared well to the seismic tomograms west of the slot but not east of the slot. The significance of this research is that seismic tomography is a useful tool for determining relative stress in underground pillars.

INTRODUCTION As practiced today, longwall mining is a mechanical version of an established mining system. The equipment for longwall mining consists of four basic units: roof supports, face conveyor, winning or mineral-getting ma¬chine, and stage-loader conveyor. The system mines relatively thin slices of mineral across a predetermined face length in a virtually continuous sequence. As the winning machine cuts, the mineral is loaded automatically onto the face conveyor. In turn, the face conveyor is pushed over into the newly cut track by hydraulic rams attached to the conveyor and the roof supports. The roof supports then are lowered individu¬ally from the roof, advanced to the repositioned con¬veyor, and reset to the roof. At the end of the pass, the longwall cutter is pushed over, and a slice is taken in the opposite direction, so the system repeats itself. Fig. I illustrates a typical longwall mining system. The principle behind the longwall mining system is that the roof is supported only immediately adjacent to the worked seam, keeping the blocks of immediate roof clamped securely from the face to the rear of the sup¬ports. At the rear of the supports, the roof is allowed to fall and break up, with the swell of the broken material eventually establishing an equilibrium in the strata be¬hind the mined area. Fig. 2 illustrates the principle of longwall support. There are two distinct types of longwall mining. The longwall retreating system is the most common in the United States, South Africa, and Australia. The longwall advancing system is the most common in the re¬maining industrialized countries such as Britain, Ger¬many, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The longwall retreating system comprises a mining panel, where the roadways that form the head entry (end at which mineral is delivered from the face con¬veyor to a stage-loader conveyor) and the tail entry are predriven before the longwall units starts production. In the longwall advancing system, the longwall unit makes the head and tail entries as the face advances, utilizing various techniques to prevent the entries from being destroyed as they are left in a consolidating gob area. Fig. 3 illustrates the comparative approaches of the longwall retreating and advancing operations. Carbonaceous material (CM) from the Barrick Goldstrike Mines, NV, was characterized with respect to its gold sorption (preg-robbing) and gold recovery behavior. The breadth of graphite peaks measured by X-ray diffraction were used to calculate crystallite dimensions (002) of the CM. The (002) dimension was found to vary inversely with preg-robbing activity and directly with gold-recovery behavior, indicating that the degree of graphitization (maturation) experienced by the carbonaceous material is correlated with gold-loss during ore processing. The inverse correlation of preg-robbing activity was improved when percent preg-robbing was regressed against (002) crystallite size and carbon content. The (101) crystallite dimensions of all samples were calculated from laser Raman analysis, and were not found to correlate with preg-robbing behavior of the CM. BET surface area and micropore size distribution results were affected by grinding history, negating comparison of these characteristics between samples.

The choice of fragmentation method is one of the most fundamental aspects of mine design, and often has a major impact on the safety and economic viability of an operation. Almost exclusively, underground mining operations rely on either mechanical excavation or drill and blast techniques to extract rock. Each of these fragmentation methods has distinct advantages and disadvantages, and each is appropriate, and economic, for different mining conditions. However, the choice of fragmentation method can have a pronounced effect on the amount of damage created in the rock mass surrounding the opening. This paper reviews a number of case studies where both mechanical excavation and traditional drill and blast were used in underground mines. Ground support requirements in the mechanically excavated areas are compared to the support requirements in the blasted sections in order to demonstrate the potential safety and cost benefits of the various fragmentation methods.

The Lucerne Valley limestone mining district is in the San Bernardino Mountains, one of the major ranges in the Transverse Range Province of southern California. Several large limestone mining operations are present along the north range front in Lucerne Valley, and the area is one of the premier limestone mining districts in the country. Resources are contained in Paleozoic carbonate rocks that are part of a thick late Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that uncomformably overlies crystalline basement. The district has been affected by multiple episodes of metamorphism and deformation, as well as by a complex sequence of late Cenozoic structural events. Detailed studies, however, have demonstrated that these rocks can be divided into formations correlatable with late Precambrian to Permian strata of the Cordilleran miogeocline. The district is the leading producer of white, high-purity calcium-carbonate products in western North America. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. mines and processes high-purity white limestone from extensive deposits, and is one of the largest producers of high-quality limestone fillers and extenders in the western United States. Major factors influencing the genesis of economic carbonate deposits in the district include depositional environment, post-depositional processes such as diagenesis, dolomitization and/or silicification, regional and/or contact metamorphism and associated intrusive activity, faulting, folding, uplift and erosion, and preservation from erosion. Regional geologic studies, detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, and recognition of complex structural relationships have proven to be invaluable tools in the discovery of high quality calcium carbonate deposits in the district.

Small-scale flotation tests have been conducted to examine the effect of froth stability on the column flotation of finely pulverized coal. The results of this study demonstrate that the upgrading of coal in a column flotation cell can be significantly improved when froth stability is properly controlled through the manipulation of appropriate operating variables. Several important correlations have been established from the test data. These relationships should prove useful for the design and ore ration of column flotation cells for fine coal processing.

Cleaning of low-rank coals can have several meanings, depending upon the definitions of the terms "low rank" and "cleaning." In general, low-rank coals would be lignite or subbituminous according to the ASTM classification. For the purposes of this summary, cleaning is defined to be any process which materially reduces the proportion of inert material in the coal. For low-rank coals, this often means a reduction in moisture content since moisture is the major inert component in these coals. A brief discussion of conventional cleaning processes is included, as is an extensive reference list.

The suggestion of the use of measurements of trace amounts of mercury as a guide to the location of sulphide ore deposits was first made by the Russian, A. A. Saukov (1), in 1.946. Since Saukov's original work, many others have studied the abundance of mercury in nature, the association of mercury with sulphide ores and methods by which very minute quantities of mercury can be measured in air, soil, rocks, water and plants. The most abundant of the mercury bearing minerals is cinnabar (HgS). Native mercury is also found and sulpha-salts like tetrahedrite are known to have important mercury contents. Other sulphides of base metal deposits contain mercury in amounts ranging from parts per million to as much as one or two percent. (2) The mercury content of sulphide-free rocks is usually less than a few hundred parts per billion (1 ppb - 10-9), Soils usually contain less than 100 ppb and water less than 1 ppb of mercury. Normal atmospheric air contains about 1 nanogram (10-9 grams) of Hg per cubic metre although higher concentrations can be observed near mercury occurrences, sulphide deposits and volcanic exhalations.

Cationic flotation of quartz is currently utilized in the concentration of iron ores and the cleaning of phosphate concentrates. The present work deals with depression of quartz in the presence of aluminum aqueous species during cationic flotation. It was established that aluminum species depress the flotation of quartz with an amine, especially under neutral and slightly alkaline conditions. With an amine as the collector, studies of the adsorption (abstraction) of Al species on quartz surfaces, as a function of pH, correlated well with the depression of this mineral. The presence of Al species also enhanced the depressant action of corn starch on quartz. In addition, the sodium salt of ethylenediaminotetraacetic (EDTA) was found to be an effective complexing agent to suppress the depression caused by aluminum ions.

An investigation of the removal of finely divided silica, coal, and alumina particles less than 20,µm in size has been carried out using liquid fluidized and packed beds. The bed particles used included 48x100, 100x150, and 150>200-mesh silica, corundum, and ilmenite particles. Important variables examined included surface charge, flow rate, pH and amount of bed particles. Surface charge has been identified as the most important variable in this system. Van der Waals force also assumes a very important role in the recovery of fine particles in fluidized and packed beds. In addition to interaction between large and fine particles, interaction between fine particles themselves assumes an important role in the overall recovery.

The accumulation, handling, and utilization of sludges formed from wet process phosphoric acid is one of the major problems in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to explain some of the considerations and techniques that can be employed to provide some measure of control over the problem. An acid made from a Central Florida phosphate rock is used to illustrate the effects of one process design approach used to provide one type of control. Other approaches or techniques are discussed on a general basis. In every case, the discussion is purposely limited to conventional dihydrate processing in which phosphoric acid is produced from the filter at a strength of approximately 30% P205 and is subsequently concentrated to higher strengths such as 44 and 54% P205.
