The ECOMINING platform aims to develop a scientific and technical organization in order to promote within the natural resources industry a framework for environment-friendly exploitation technologies (on Best Available Technologies principle) and also to develop a solid basis for performing Research and Development projects. The ground of this project is the success of the First International Seminar: ECOMIN-ING - Europe in 21st Century1, organized by the Research and Development National Institute for Metals and Radioactive Resources Bucharest in co-operation with ITASCA Consultants GmbH Germany, the University of Petrosani and supported by the National Society of Salt Bucharest & Praid salt mine branch and the Ministry of Economy and Commerce. The platform provides a complex data base, for partners? selection and researchers? team structure. This can provide the scientific results with a high level of confidence for the projects of interest in the field of exploitation of mineral resources and for the participation on national and international project proposals competitions (i.e., target the 7th Framework Programme or any European / national programme, which can provide funds for the ECOMINING platform field of interest). The next step is the affiliation of the ECOMINING platform to the European ones, and to be compatible with them. The ECOMINING platform represents itself a 7th Framework Programme (FP) project idea.

Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) service to New York City is limited to Penn Station on the West Side of Manhattan, which is operating at its practical capacity for the commuter railroad. This situation imposes serious considerations for future growth and limits the destination of many Long Island commuters. The East Side Access Project will provide a connection of the LIRR to the landmark Grand Central Terminal (GCT)on the East Side of Manhattan. The construction of the connection will require significant tunneling and underground work utilizing a variety of construction techniques. In Queens, the connection will require five soft ground tunnels using pressurized face tunnel boring machine. In Manhattan, the connection will require a series of rock tunnels and caverns connecting to two deep large station caverns under GCT to accommodate eight tracks with four platforms in a stacked configuration. The caverns housing train rooms are connected to the lower level of GCT where a large concourse will be provided. With a budget of $4.3 Billion, The East Side Access Project is the largest transportation project ever undertaken in New York City. This paper provides an overview of the project, discusses its environmental and the engineering challenges, and provides an insight into the design development to date.

The laminated model, in conjunction with the seam element method, is expected to be a powerful predictor of subsidence due to coal mining. The fundamental solutions for the model are presented. Numerical approach to determine the roof-to-floor convergence and evaluation of ground movement are discussed. Numerical results and comparisons with field observations are given to illustrate the validity and the potential of the model.

Mine ventilation survey data includes generally redundant, usually inconsistent, often incomplete, and always noisy measurements. Yet, these data are essential for operational decisions and represent the foundation of any mine ventilation systems model used for future engineering analysis and design. For example, the basic ventilation network geometry can be measured with a reasonable precision, the network flows can be measured, but with significant errors, and the branch resistance factors can not be directly measured at all. The network-based, constrained weighted least squares approach, presented in this paper, advances a method for the sys tem-wide adjustment of ventilation branch measurements and the consistent estimation of global system parameters (e.g. branch flows, head losses, and resistance factors). The constraints guarantee that the adjusted values satisfy the governing physical laws: conservation of flow, conservation of energy, and the appropriate energy dissipation rule (e. g. Atkinson's RQ2). The weights allow for the proper inclusion of data with widely disparate precision, as well as offering a simple method for retiring old data as the mine changes through time. The post-adjustment sensitivity analysis presents two potentially useful forms of analysis: the identification of previously unspecified leakage branches, and the semi- automatic recommendation for future ventilation measurement campaigns. The overall efficiency of the algorithm is exemplified by the fact that a ventilation network with hundreds of branches and thousands of measurements can be routinely adjusted on a microcomputer.

Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) developed Meandu Mine in Queensland, Australia in 1983 to supply thermal coal to the adjacent newly constructed Tarong Power Station (TPS). In designing the mine, RTCA selected Meandu?s best economic reserves for a 25-year life based on station owner Tarong Energy Corporation?s (TEC?s) estimated life for TPS. That 25-year plan changed dramatically in the early 2000s when TEC approved life extensions to TPS?s four existing units plus construction of a fifth unit. After reviewing Meandu?s remaining reserves, RTCA decided the nearby Kunioon reserve offered the more economic option for maintaining deliveries beyond 2010. Those plans changed yet again in 2007 when TEC chose to purchase the Meandu Mine and nearby reserves rather than extend RTCA?s contract. TEC then selected Thiess Pty Ltd (Thiess) to continue operating Meandu until the new mine at Kunioon could be developed.

A new coal boom is under way in western Canada. As recently as the mid-1960's, the coal industry in western Canada was considered stagnant and, by some people, dying. But Japan's growing need for coking coal, which became more pronounced in 1966, sparked great interest in western Canadian reserves.' As a result of a rapidly expanding export market and growth in domestic demand, Canadian coal production spurted to 16.6 million tons in 1970. Production in 1965 was 11.5 million tons. Today, about 60 percent of Canada's output comes from western Canada, but by 1975, 87 percent (23.1 million tons) is expected to come from this area, and 96 percent (68.3 million tons) by 1990. Opening, developing and operating new coal mines to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market for western Canadian metallurgical coals pose some unique and difficult problems. Covering nearly every aspect of opening properties in remote areas, the problems are met in exploration, transportation, construction, mine operations, coal preparation, manpower and ecology. Paul Weir Company has been involved as coal consultants on various projects in western Canada for some years. In presenting this paper, we make no attempt to present an in-depth or detailed analysis of any one specific situation. "The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties, as well as how these components correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines. Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of MSHA reportable cases. A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which included compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) data (ACARP, 1998). Results indicate that bumping coals are less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that do not bump. High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average UCS values. However, no clear, direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study establish that differences exist between coals that have experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents versus those that have not. These differences are inherent to the coal itself, independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminate how compositional attributes of coal influence physical properties and begin to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status. Only through the better understanding of risk can more effective mitigating strategies be enacted.INTRODUCTIONDynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the sudden failures of rock in a mining or quarrying environment. "Mining industry as a source of raw material is essential to society however, it lacks of good reputation due to the type of management historically applied to many of its social and environmental impacts. It is argued that this situation has hampered the obtaining of social license to operate of a lot of mining projects around the world. The last considerations are very common in Latin American countries. As a result, the mining sector has understood that the viability of the business long term is associated with more profit for the shareholders but also with activities that improve the livelihoods of local communities, enhance the capabilities of local governments and preserve the ecosystems around the projects. Nevertheless, recent studios have shown that most of the current advances to incorporate sustainability concepts in mining have been mainly focused on control and the prevention of environmental and social impacts of extractive activities. Thus, contributing to the development of territories around mining projects constitutes a fundamental aspect of the business competitiveness through reducing cost and risks of stopping projects, innovating new ways of relationship with stakeholders, improving the level of reputation of the industry as well as its position in the market. However, this contribution requires formal strategies and models that enable companies understand the different resources in the territories where their mining activities are developed and those resource transformations, in order to establish the best way to articulate the project with the territory, pursuing an effective contribution to its development, truly sustainable over time even after the mine closure. CONTEXT Currently in the world but especially in developing countries such as Latin Americans, different stakeholders are increasingly vigilant of how mining companies carry out their activities in terms of socio-economic and environmental management of territories, not only for its impact on the livelihoods of the communities that inhabit them, but also because many demanders of raw materials -both countries and companies- have set sustainability standards as a prerequisite to establishing business relationships with mining companies, such as the recently declared Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 (UN, 2015). Accordingly, decide underinvest or not to invest in sustainability issues carries risks for mining companies. However, invest much in the wrong way may involve the same risks. Managers are concerned to ensure profits, and therefore they decide carefully how to invest in the areas of production, R & D or marketing. Likewise, they should think strategically about investing in initiatives related to sustainability. This if they really want that those investments in fact help to improve the competitiveness of the company. The mining industry benefits from natural capital that extracts, so it should implement strategies that lead to remunerate such benefit to the territories (Almaguer, 2007). One option is through the transformation of natural capital in other types of non-existent capital or poorly developed in their areas of influence. In this way, the value generated by the extraction of underground resources is shared and additionally contributing to improving the quality of life of the communities. Historically, mining industry has been into several problems to achieve this, which represents one of the aspects that has most influenced the current reputation of mining industry in some regions of Latin America. Many communities, local governments and civil society organizations continue to associate this activity with the destruction of the social fabric and ecosystems in the territories, and their opposition against companies working in the areas has led to affect the operational continuity of many projects (Hamann, 2003; Prno and Scott, 2012; Slack, 2012)."

Molybdenum, the 42nd element in the periodic table, is now a very important metal in industry of the United States and the world. Chemically, it is a very complex element having valences of 0, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and can exist as a mixture of these valences in many compounds. It was discovered and separated by Scheele in 1778. At the present time, molybdenite is the only important commercial source of molybdenum. Molybdenum occurs in some 12-14 different recognized minerals, but practically all of the production is molybde¬nite. As late as 1915, it was considered a rare metal. Germany made extensive use of it during the first world war, which resulted in the establishment of a molybdenum industry in the United States at Cli¬max, Colo., in 1917. It was not until the mid-1920s when its introduc¬tion to steelmaking developed for the US automobile industry that the metal gained important acceptance. The first notable example was the Willis-Saint Claire automobile introduced in 1921 by C. Harold Willis, formerly chief metallurgist for Ford Motor Co. Molybdenum has also been produced in the US from wulfenite (PbMoO4) from Arizona and Nevada, and a small amount of molyb¬denite was produced up to the early 1970s as a coproduct from two molybdenum-bismuth mines in Quebec, Canada. The first byproduct production of molybdenite from a copper con¬centrating operation was achieved at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and was followed shortly by the Utah division of Kennecott Copper Co. in the mid-1930s. This section of the Handbook is divided into four main subdivi¬sions: Chapter 2, which deals with the concentration and recovery of molybdenite from primary molybdenum ores; Chapter 3, which deals with the recovery and separation of molybdenite as a byproduct from copper production; Chapter 4, which deals with the conversion practices employed for converting molybdenite to the oxide or metal form; and Chapter 5, which covers the uses of molybdenum in steel¬making, chemicals, pigments, lubrication, catalysts, etc. The Free World molybdenum production, for the past eight years from all sources, is shown in Table 1. 2. Primary Molybdenite Ores General In 1978 there were four primary molybdenite recovery plants in operation: Climax, Endako, Quests, and Henderson. For over half a century the Climax mine has been by far the largest and most important source of molybdenum in the world. During the early 1970s a few primary molybdenite mines in British Columbia were shut down due to adverse economical conditions. The largest of these was British Columbia Molybdenum, formerly owned by Kennecott Copper Corp. The Climax plant and operations are described in detail and the opera¬tions of the other plants are summarized following a general discussion of recovering molybdenite from primarily molybdenite ores. Recovery of molybdenite as a byproduct will be taken up in Chapter 3. Geology Molybdenite production from mines in which it is the sole or preponderantly important mineral is confined to ore bodies in granites or igneous-type rocks or pegmatite dikes. More than one state of mineralization is sometimes present as at Climax, York, Hardy, and Questa. In the case of Climax, important byproduct recovery of tung¬sten, tin, pyrite, and monazite is also attained. The molybdenite is commonly disseminated very finely in the siliceous granitic gangue but does occur in stringers and blebs in silicified mineral solution channels. Treatment of Primary Molybdenum Ores All primary molybdenum ores are low in molybdenite, the content ranging from less than 0.20% MoS2 to a high of about 0.40% MoS2. A high resistance to grinding is a common ore characteristic combined with a habit of very fine dissemination of molybdenite in the siliceous portion of the ore. Because of low MoS2 content, high hardness, and fine dissemination of molybdenite in primary ores, it has been necessary to develop a special mill treatment which yields an accepta¬ble recovery at a reasonably low milling cost. Essentially, the treatment consists of intensive rougher flotation at a relatively coarse grind with production of a low grade rougher froth containing a substantial percentage of the molybdenite in the form of low grade middling particles, followed with multistage regrinding to liberate the locked molybdenite and several stages of flotation cleaning to produce a finished grade concentrate. Rougher flotation on pulp ground to ap¬proximately 35 mesh is common practice, even if complete liberation of molybdenite from siliceous gangue may require regrinding to 200 mesh. The flotation of middling particles with a very low content of molybdenite in the rougher flotation step has been made possible by the application of a combination of reagents first developed at the Climax mill and used with some modification in the treatment of all primary molybdenum ores. Rehabilitation of sites contaminated by oil products and chlorinated organic compounds is a costly task which affects the planning of urban and infrastructure development. An integrated approach based on the non-invasive geophysical technology is utilized for subsurface characterization of contaminated land. In this approach the localized information, provided by chemical analysis of soil samples collected from bore-holes, is used for the calibration of the geophysical data. This information is subsequently extrapolated to the area under investigation by combining it with the geophysical results, providing thus information about pollution accumulation, contaminants? flow and pollution sources. Two case studies are presented from sites contaminated by heavy metals (Venice, Italy) and oil products (Athens, Greece). Resistivity, electromagnetic and seismic methods were used in this approach. Namely, electrical tomography, electromagnetic mapping, ground penetrating radar (GPR), multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and seismic refraction experiments were conducted. In Italy, the sections from the multichannel analysis of surface waves imaged successfully a buried channel where the pollution is concentrated. Preliminary results are also discussed from the geophysical survey in Greece where the thickness of the oil phase located on top of the water layer is 60 cm.

Chemical and mineralogical characterization of Malaysian monazite, a phosphate mineral, bearing rare earth elements separated from the tin tailings originated from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, was performed in this paper. The study aims to collect detailed information on the chemical composition, crystal phases, and microstructure of the mineral monazite concentrate that would aid to optimize the subsequent hydrometallurgical processes for high-efficient separation of thorium and other associated rare earth elements. A systematic characterization study of the concentrate was conducted using techniques such as optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These techniques analyzed the morphological details on the surface, elemental analysis, and mineral association assessment and identified the surface functionalization groups. The bulk composition and the mineral phases in which the elements are present were studied by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies respectively. The XRF analysis confirmed the presence of Ce, La, Nd, Pr, and Y (rare earth oxides: REO’s ~ 60 wt.%) while thorium dioxide (ThO2) accounted for 7 wt.% of the total composition. Traces of Ca, K, Al, Fe, Ti, and Mn were also confirmed by SEM elemental mapping. The XRD results confirmed that the concentrate was primarily composed of monazite (Ce, La, Nd, Th (PO4)) along with minor impurity phases of quartz. Automated mineralogical analysis was used as a confirmatory tool to corroborate the preliminary evidences. Based on the particle size distribution analysis supported by SEM, the majority of monazite grains were found to be present in the size range of 170–210 μm. Strong bands of PO4 and SiO4 were observed in the IR spectra corresponding to the phospho-silicate matrix of the REE mineral.

This paper examines new copper production from waste-grade ore using Blue Planet Strategies’ DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrode Mining Effluent Treatment) technology, which aims to bridge the practical weak pregnant leach solution (PLS) processing gap in heap leach-solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) operations by electrochemically removing metals from weak streams and generating product streams strengthened in target metals in a functional analog to SX. Weak PLS treatment was studied and used to estimate the economic and production impacts for a representative hypothetical brownfield copper heap leaching and DEMET-augmented SX/ EW operation to utilize "waste ore." Copper removal at 86% plating efficiency to below 0.1 g/L copper with power consumption of 0.55 kWh/lb copper and product strengths of over 10 g/L copper are presented. Modeling yielded approximately $2/lb total copper production and = $1/lb treatment costs with an immediate operation gross margin increase of 12% for the augmented brownfield. Potential mine life extension with an average 38% gross margin on "waste ore" augmented production at copper values of $3.25/lb was also indicated.

TBM utilization rate is a component of machine performance prediction and critical for developing a reliable estimate of the construction completion time and cost of the tunnel. Estimation of the utilization rate involves identifying and quantifying the time dedicated to each activity in a tunneling jobsite. Ring building is a common activity in TBM tunneling and takes a large amount of tunnel excavation time when using shielded TBMs. This paper concentrates on the effect of tunnel diameter on the duration of downtimes related to ring building and examines the impact of machine diameter on downtimes. For this purpose, the dependency of segment installation time to segment configuration, and also the diameter of the tunnel was investigated. Furthermore, the ring building time for four tunnels with different sizes of diameters and a variety of ring arrangement were analyzed and the relationship between TBM diameter and segment installation time and consequently TBM utilization was evaluated.

"THE CHALLENGE The 14km long, Arlbergtunnel, closed for public traffic during summer 2015, receiving a comprehensive and substantial renovation from 2015 to 2017. The main works discussed here, carried out during 2015, comprise 37 drill and blast SEM/NATM emergency escape tunnels from road level to the ventilation duct plenum have to be constructed as well as eight additional lay-by niches and three transformer tunnels. This presentation comprises the construction ventilation design, designed according to national regulations, suitable for 150 employees working 24/7 simultaneously at more than 40 single working sites lined up along the tunnel. The ventilation-system chosen was utilising two existing shafts for intake/discharge and a cross passage to surface, to handle a total fan power of 1.600kW. DESCRIPTION OF RENOVATION WORKS Linking Tyrol and Vorarlberg, two Federal States of Austria, the Arlbergtunnel is a single tube two-way road tunnel with vent duct plenum, constructed in the mid-1970s. According to latest EU legislation, additional escape exits have become obligatory. The existing seven cross passage links to the adjacent Arlberg Railway Tunnel, with average spacing of about 1.500m constructed in 2007, an additional upgrade to shorter escape spaces of approx. 400m was now required to comply with the updated legislation. Additional transformer tunnels, lay-by niches and small niches for emergency maintenance use, cleaning and other purposes, as well as a the installation of a new fire main in the invert, coupled with the simultaneous replacement of virtually the entire power and signaling cables, generated several dozen small and large single sites distributed along the 14km of tunnel.Purpose of the 37 walkable emergency escape tunnels is to reach the “upper deck” of the Arlbergtunnel, the vent duct plenum. These have an 180deg curve in plan, inclined at 10% and approx. 60m (65yd) long tunnels, excavated using drill and blast method starting from road level and working upwards to the level of an “intermediate soffit”, the vent duct plenum in the crown of the tunnel. The vent duct plenum is separated into a fresh air part and an exhaust air part, shown in Figure 1. The escape tunnels end with a pressure door in the fresh air section of the ventilation duct plenum. From there illuminated signs show the shortest escape route to the safe area between the road tunnel and the railway tunnel, as shown in Figure 2."

Introduction This text is intended to provide the operator and turnkey contractor with the basic data for sizing vibrating screens to be used in ore crushing plants. The basic capacities, modifying factors, etc.. used in the area requirement calculations were developed empirically and modified to their present values based upon years of practical applications. It must be pointed out that screening is much more of an art than an exact science; however. the information presented here should provide for reasonably accurate screen sizing when applied to many metallic ores. Types of Screens There are two types of screens which can be used for strictly sizing applications. These are two- and four-bearing screens; both are inclined circle-throw machines. To assess the value of various subsidence mitigation techniques, twelve linear foundations were constructed above a longwall mine. The structures were monitored during and after undermining, and footing curvatures at the time of cracking were compared with predicted values. An unreinforced concrete footing sustained substantial damage. Other footings received varying degrees of damage, with inclusion of a sand layer significantly affecting performance. A post-tensioned concrete foundation suffered minimal cracking. Also, a technique developed by the Bureau of Mines is presented for determining the subsidence, slope, curvature and strain of the ground surface.

Asbestos is a generic name given to six fibrous minerals that have been used widely in commercial products. The six types of asbestos are chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos (Table 1). Chrysotile is the asbestiform variety of serpentine. Crocidolite, amosite, antho-phyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos are the asbestiform analogues of riebeckite, cummingtonite-grunerite, anthophyllite, tremolite, and actinolite, respectively. Although amosite is an acronym for the Asbestos Mines of South Africa (AMOSITE) and does not specify a mineral type, it generally is composed of cummingtonite-grunerite asbestos so the terms are assumed to be synonymous.

The Hurtières Tunnel was built in 1995 with drill and blast method, in metamorphic schist. It is located between Lyon and Torino on the A 43 motorway in the French Alps. During the construction, a geological hazard was encountered, which caused a massive ground collapse. The tunnel was filled up with 3,000 m3of glacial materials. Geological investigations realized after the accident showed that a narrow glacial valley was present at this location the water table was 40 m above the tunnel level. The paper will describe the collapse and the remedial methods which were implemented to proceed through the failure area. These included drainage works,2,000 m3 grouting and 6,200 ml jet grouting columns.

JAMES DONALD FORRESTER 32.1-EXAMINATIONS The field examination of a mineral deposit or mining enterprise requires a comprehensive effort to determine all natural and man-made factors bearing upon the problem to be resolved by the investigation. Therefore, the purpose to be served by an examination must be fully understood before the engineer assumes responsibility, and before actual field work starts. A clear understanding facilitates planning the approach to the project for maximum efficiency and thorough acquisition of information. It follows, of course, that the engineer has the necessary knowledge and experience to discharge satisfactorily the professional obligations attending the project. Some studies are in herently more complex than others, and the requirements of the problem are not always the same. Some examinations require the detailed investigation of large operating or nonoperating mines or, possibly, of mining districts; others involve more or less reconnaissance studies; and still others rela¬tively small undeveloped mineral occurrences. Likewise, the primary objective of some analyses may be the evaluation of a mineral deposit or a mining property, whereas in other projects the major objective may be guiding mining or drilling work in the discovery of new or hidden ore bodies and mineral-bearing structures. Thus, the possible range of any given examination may extend in varying degree through one, or more, of the following types of procedures: 32.1.1--GEOGRAPHIC ENVIRONMENT Studies of geographic environment should be made to ascertain the general physical situation in the area under consideration and to identify those correlative factors hearing on the, findings resulting from the field examination. This commonly will include determinations of: A. Location of the field area with respect to the state and county in which it occurs and, if feasible, a record of the township, range and section with reference to the principal meridian, and base line (or lines) that apply. For examinations in foreign countries, or in regions outside the continental United States, it is desirable that the field locality, in each instance, be identified with reference to the boundaries of some form of political entity essentially comparable in character to the divisions used in the United States. B. Distances from existing communities and related service centers, via: 1. Roads, both improved and unimproved. 2. Railroads. 3. Navigable waterways. 4. Airports. C. Topographic relief as it will influence the selection of 1. Pit site or positions of underground mine portals or shaft sites, including dump areas. 2. Mill site, including tailings disposal area.
