Stemming plugs are used as an accessory in drilling and blasting industry. They supplement conventional stemming material (i.e. drill cutting) with retention of gases in the drill hole that result in better fragmentation of rock and improved explosive utilization. Better fragmentation and explosive utilization along with economic benefits enhance efficacy of the project. Incorporation of stemming plugs in drilling and blasting industry is in exercise for about thirty years. The efficiency of stemming plugs is a key factor in their rising induction in mining industry. Different studies have been conducted on the economic viability of these plugs. The focus of this paper is the selection of stemming plugs for a bench blasting operation and the examination of blasting operation efficiency based on ergonomics and human factors. Three types of stemming plugs were evaluated during multiple blasts at a limestone quarry. Their performance was evaluated using split desktop software. Based on the human factors plastic molded stemming plug (stemming plug-1) was found to be the best among all selected plugs. INTRODUCTION Surface mines and quarrying operations heavily depend on bench blasting to achieve high volumetric targets and production demands. Use of explosives is the most economic method adopted for rock breakage and movement. Extensive research had been performed to enhance explosives energy utilization. This include changing the drilling pattern, application of air decks, stemming plugs, and use of other supportive devices. Optimization of explosive energy has been a major concern in those mines that rely on drilling and blasting operation to carry out main production. Due to continually increasing cost, efficient mining demands, and associated hazards of using explosives, it is necessary to utilize explosives at their best. Efficiency of a blasting operation is generally evaluated by the fragmentation size. From post blast conditions at blasting site to efficiency of processing plant, anything can be affected due to improper blast resulting in bad fragmentation. Better fragmentation is necessity for better operation of the system along with consideration of the safety of operation, environmental issues and related costs. For developing a blast design, an engineer should always attempt to minimize the cost of operation without compromising with acceptable technical and safety necessities [1]. Blast performance is dependent on many different factors associated with the process. These factors have been gauged as blast geometry, explosive specification, and rock mass properties [2]. Similarly, in 2013 Mohammad et al. concluded that fragmentation dynamics depends on blast hole diameter, primer, spacing, stemming, burden, and delay timing for blasting operation [1]. At the work site where this study was performed, blast holes were filled by drill cuttings and muds to help in confining gases. In a blast hole, gas confinement helps in better rock fragmentation along with reduced flyrocks. This practice is most common in many countries including Pakistan. Due to lack of homogenized particle size, the effectiveness of confinement is variable and majorly based on the size of stemming. Extremely small sized drill cuttings often result in hole blow out along with flyrocks from the collar. This improper blast energy will result in poor blast, bad impacts on environment, and reduced operational efficiency. In addition to the stemming material, the length of stemming is also a prime consideration. The decrease in stemming length will increase the quantity of explosive in the blast hole and an increase in stemming material generally improves stemming performance.

The requirements of metals by modern society have created big challenges for mining engineers minerals processing engineers, metallurgical engineers and economists to produce these metals economically from mineral deposits which contain, with time, less and less value. The advances of science and technology allow, today, the exploitation of mineral deposits which only few years ago would not have been considered economical. However, there are limitations both on the minimum grade of recoverable values contained in the ore to be fed to a mill or on the concentrate to be smelted, and on the maximum content of "impurities" i.e. chemical elements which are difficult or expensive to refine from the ore, from the concentrate or from the metal. It is also known that the cost of treatment in a mill or in a smelter, for unit of metal contained in the ore or in the concentrate, increases as the grade of the recoverable values contained in them decreases and also if the content of impurities increases. Surface dependent processes, such as froth flotation and flocculation, are important or potentially important techniques for combating some of the current major problems in coal preparation. In order to correctly apply or imporve a surface dependent process, it is of paramount importance to understand the interfacial phenomenon, especially the double layer properties, exhibited by the solid. The specific objective of this research was to determine the properties of the bituminous coal/liquid interface by an electrokinetic method, streaming potential, and to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the existing unit operations of froth flotation and flocculation. The electrokinetic properties of both the whole coal and its lithotypes were investigated. As part of the total investigation, the role played in the double layer by the reagents commonly employed in the surface dependent process was also established (1). These data will be presented at a latter date.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) of the School of Mines and Energy Development (SOMED), University of Alabama conducted studies to determine the potential for upgrading the Eastern Devonian shales by flotation. Results of those studies indicate that flotation concentrates containing 150 liters of oil/t (36 gal/t) can be produced from shale containing 50 liters of oil/t (12 gal/t) as determined by Fischer Assay with good recovery of the kerogen. Organic carbon and trace elements such as molybdenum, vanadium and uranium also are concentrated with the kerogen. Kerogen concentration was found to be a function of the size of grind.

The properties of a geologic mass may be considered from a resource or an engineering viewpoint. The primary engineering applications include ground control, excavation, bulk handling, and hydrology. This study will focus upon these areas in descending order. For an adequate geologic description, data is necessary on the following components: (1) the intact rock, (2) geologic structures, (3) contained fluids, and (4) existing pressures and temperatures, see Table 1. This information, combined with the engineering specifications, provides the basis for a formal geotechnical analysis as illustrated in Figure 1. For a structural analysis it is essential to establish the mechanical properties of the material composing the structure. This material, termed the "rock mass," consists mainly of the first two geologic components, the intact rock and geologic structures (Figure 1) Consideration of fluids will be subordinated to their role as chemical agents affecting the mechanical properties. The existence of pressures and temperatures generally lies beyond the scope of this study.

To provide critical scientific data and engineering guidelines to federal and state regulatory agencies as well as the coal and gas industries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a Gas Well Stability Research Program in 2016. This paper summarizes the critical scientific data acquisition, interpretation, and modeling by NIOSH regarding the stability of unconventional shale gas wells influenced by longwall mining. Currently, NIOSH is the only organization in the U.S. conducting such fundamental and impactoriented research, which receives input and collaborations from MSHA, PADEP, WVDMS, OHDNR, the coal industry, and the gas industry. Results from the NIOSH field instrumentation programs—which include surface, subsurface, and underground instrumentation—and the parallel three-dimensional numerical modeling programs indicate that, under shallow and medium covers, the measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are one order of magnitude higher than those measured under deep cover. Casing couplers are found to play an important role in longwall-induced casing deformations. Cementing alternatives are found to have significant impact on longwall-induced casing stresses and deformations. Measured 60-arm caliper logging results are in good agreement with three-dimensional computer simulation results. Engineering guidelines on longwall-induced deformations, casing and cementing alternatives, gas well setback distances, as well as risk assessment strategy are proposed.

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a quantitative assessment of the risk of lung cancer associated with occupational exposures to diesel exhaust was performed. This assessment was primarily based upon the results from a study of the effects of chronic inhalation exposure to diesel exhaust in Fischer-344 rats (previously reported by Mauderly et al., 1987). An adaptation of the Armitage-Doll multistage model, which allows for an age-dependent effect of exposure, was used to model the tumor response data. This model was fitted to all tumors (benign and malignant), and to malignant neoplasms alone. Estimates of unit risk (potency) were derived based upon a linear approximation to the results from the multistage model. A biologically equivalent dose was developed to scale the results from airborne exposure in rats to humans, which was adjusted for differences in weight, ventilation rate, deposition fraction, and the percentage of time actually exposed. Comparisons are made with risk estimates derived from modeling other rat inhalation bioassays and from applying different models to the study by Mauderly et al. (1987). We emphasize that our risk estimates are based upon a series of assumptions and carry a great deal of uncertainty. In particular, uncertainties regarding the effects of exposure on lung clearance mechanisms, the deposition rates in humans, and the relevance of our exposure index limit our confidence in these risk estimates. Well-designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimizing truck haulage onroad hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. In practice, however, designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often difficult to achieve, especially when resources assigned to design and construction are constrained. By understanding how a road design is developed from geometric, structural, functional and maintenance considerations and, critically, the interplay between these components in design and operation, optimal performance can be achieved. This paper briefly summarizes the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for safer and more efficient haulage systems, the truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment and the recognition of human factors as a significant contributor to haulage accidents. While the human factor is the most problematic to address in a road design, the paper shows that the more that is known about human error, the better a road can be designed to accommodate those actions or non-standard practices that would, on a poorly designed road, invariably escalate an error into an accident.

Remote control for mining machines ordinarily means the operator is not seated on the machine, but is located within direct view of the machine and work area Thus, remote control operators are exposed to the hazards of roof/rib falls and dust/methane explosions. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method to disassociate remote operators from these hazards. Off-board, computer-based "tele-operational" systems are utilized that station the operators one-hundred meters or more distant from the working faces. Details are provided for tele-operated systems for thin-seam extraction and haulage equipment in highwall and deep, room-and-pillar coal mines.

"INTRODUCTION Tunnel is a closed space structure and it is necessary to ensure the sufficient time and route for safe evacuation for the tunnel users in case of a tunnel fire. In order to do so, damages and collapse of the tunnel linings and the secondary disasters can be avoided. Furthermore, the road tunnel is one of important infrastructural facilities and stopping its function for a long time for a tunnel fire could cause a great economic loss. Therefore, the tunnel structure shall be the one which can be repaired as soon as possible, and the fire protection methods need to be selected among those which enable the service to start as early as possible. The necessity of the fire protection works is evaluated for the tunnel structure with the consideration of the expensive tunnel construction cost and the economic effects of the tunnel service. Naturally, the fire protection works, which can protect the tunnel linings from the tunnel fire with small repairs, are inevitable. Design engineers of the fire protection works estimate the scale of fire from the degree of damages on the linings and its repair cost, the effect of fire extinguishers placed inside of the tunnel, the secondary disasters in accordance with the tunnel lining damages if any, and the ratio of fire protection cost calculated from tunnel operation cost. Based on this information, the engineers design the fire protection works according to the permissible limits Among the design cases of the tunnel fire protection in Japan, as shown in Table 1, there is no cases that used the fire temperature-time curve to design the fire protection works for large fire caused by vehicles catching fire. However, the most of cases used 30-60 minutes for fire duration based on the entry prohibition of dangerous goods carrying vehicles or the effect of early fire fighting. This paper will study the variation between different methods used for fire protection in road tunnel in Japan to evaluate them and try to found some recommendations. Especial l care will be attention to Polypropylenes (PP) which is starting to be applied lately."

A field trial of by distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) technique was conducted at a longwall coal mine in Australia. This investigation was designed to assess the applicability of DOFS for microseismic monitoring in mining. The experiments used commercially available optic fiber cables, geophones and associated data acquisition instruments – a fiber interrogator and a seismic recorder. The fiber cable was deployed in a 300m deep hole and in trenches of approximately 3.5 km long on the ground surface around and across the longwall panel being mined. The results obtained from the experiments have shown that DOFS is able to acquire microseismic data with quality that is comparable to geophones. It has been proven that DOFS can achieve higher spatial resolution for seismicity sensing and higher accuracy for locating events than a geophone network. These characteristics are particularly useful for using DOFS to monitor ground vibrations associated with ground caving processes and rock fracturing events induced by mining and civil engineering. It was also found that far more additional seismic events were recorded by the fibers than by the geophones. Automated data discrimination and processing methods must be developed in order to utilize DOFS for real-time applications.

The design of an aquifer depressurization system is discussed. The system uses a number of wells surrounding a mine shaft to reduce the aquifer pressure in the vicinity of the shaft. The effect of various parameters such as number of wells, wellbore diameter, time and well location is discussed. It is concluded that, with a properly designed depressurization system, the aquifer pressure and the water inflow rate to the shaft may be reduced to less than 15X of their potential values in the absence of wells

The height of permanent slopes at the Panguna mine of Bougainville Copper Limited will vary from 350 to 950 metres. A few degrees difference in slope angle has a large effect on the ore/waste stripping ratio. Optimum slopes can be achieved if longer batter slopes (exceeding 45m height) are excavated using bulldozers to trim parallel to controlling fracture surfaces. Unnecessary slope flattening by incorporating benches can cost millions of dollars in lost ore. Faults and other major weaknesses, which can result in wedge failure or erodible zones have been treated successfully with shotcrete, rockbolts and cable dowels. To minimize support effort and interference with mine production, early identification and treatment of unstable areas is important.

The effects of operating variables on water transport to the over- flow, classification of hydrophilic particles and the recovery of copper and molybdenum from a low-grade porphyry ore are presented. Recoveries of copper and molybdenum exceeding 90 percent at a grade of 8 percent Cu and 0.2 percent Mo were realized for minus 100 mesh (1 49 µm) material at retention times of less than 500 milliseconds. The rapid rate of flotation and the effective separation of fine particles for an air sparged hydrocyclone appear to be due to directed interaction of particles in a high force field with numerous freshly formed small bubbles. This interaction occurs in the swirl flow developed by the system and is analyzed in terms of collision and induction time phenomena.

Direct-reduction processes for converting iron ores to metallic iron in the solid state have been available for some time; and whenever scrap becomes expensive, there is a new wave of interest in these processes. It is well established that direct reduction, coupled with electric-furnace steelmaking, is a technically viable method for making steel and in some circumstances is economically competitive with the conventional blast-furnace--basic-oxygen-process (BOP) route to steel. This raises a number of interesting questions, several of which could be of great interest to the coal and ore mining industries. For example, what are the quality requirements of the raw materials for direct-reduction--electric-furnace steelmaking? Would they be different from the present requirements for blast-furnace--BOP steelmaking? Other questions relate to how much steel will be made by the direct-reduction route in the future. The quality questions can be discussed with a fair degree of certainty, but a prediction of the amount of steel that will be produced by the direct-reduction--electric-furnace route is beyond the scope of this paper. However, an attempt will be made to identify some of the factors that will influence whether there is a swing to direct reduction and the rate at which it may occur.

In contrast to the rather generalized title of this paper, the subject of discussion will deal with two specific cases of sliding in glacial lake clays in northern Michigan. The slides in question occurred on lands owned by the Upper Peninsula Power Company a short distance south of Lake Superior. Slope failure problems have plagued the Company's operations for many years. It is hoped that this paper may provide some insight into the causes and possible mechanisms of clay slides in general as well as providing details of the two slides specifically cited. LOCATION The Upper Peninsula Power Company's Victoria facilities lie in section 29, T. 50 N., R. 39 W., in Ontonagon County, Michigan. The power site is situated on the West Branch of the Ontonagon River, approximately five miles southwest of the town of Rockland and only one mile to the southeast of the old mining location of Victoria. The area lies wholly within the Precambrian Shield and it is geologically similar to adjacent parts of Wisconsin, Minn¬esota, and Ontario. (Figure 1). THE VICTORIA HYDROELECTRIC SITE The Victoria hydroelectric power facilities were constructed in 1930 on a portion of the West Branch where meanders are conspicuously developed. The generating station is actually sited on an abandoned meander at a place where valley widening has occurred. The Monterey Coal Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Carter Oil Company of Houston, Texas, recently awarded a contract to build the Monterey No. 1 Preparation Plant, which will be located near Carlinville, Illinois, to the McNally Pittsburg Manufacturing Corporation. The preparation plant will be one of the most modern jig preparation plants in the State of Illinois. Illinois No. 6 coal will be delivered by a 48" slope belt having 35-degree carrying idlers, operating at 650 FPM and operating on an incline of nearly 17 degrees. The slope belt is driven by two 450 BP motors and will deliver the mined coal at the rate of 1800 TPH to a stationary step-type ' screen having six-inch openings. The overproduct from the stationary screen will discharge into a 10' x 24' McNally Rotary Breaker and the underproduct will bypass the rotary breaker. The rotary breaker is equipped with heavy manganese screens with 6 ½" diameter openings. The sized 6" x 0 coal from the stationary step screen and the rotary breaker will be discharged by gravity to a 4%" raw coal incline storage belt. The 48" raw coal storage belt will deliver the 6" x 0 sized coal at the rate of 1800 T?H to an 8000 ton concrete raw coal silo, 70 feet in diameter and 1x7 feet high. The 6" x 0 sized coal will be drawn from the concrete storage silo by seven (7) 36" wide reciprocating plate feeders. Five feeders are to have constant speed drives at a rated capacity of 145 TPH each. Two (2) feeders will have remote con- trolled variable speed drives, to provide a varying feed.

In a previous article1 the methyl stretching vibrations for a series of xanthates and amines were reported, and the frequency of the methyl stretching vibrations in a homologous series of the alkyl compounds were shown to decrease exponentially with chain length and approach a limiting value corresponding to that of saturated hydrocarbon beyond six or seven carbons. These observations were explained quantitatively by the theory of Goto and Takenaka2 who proposed an equation relating the frequency shifts to the inductive effect of polar groups. As a result, the alkyl groups in the shorter chain heteropolar compounds were interpreted as becoming somewhat polar, and a good correlation was observed between the CH3-stretching frequencies and such surface chemistry parameters as contact angle, surface tension lowering, solubility, and critical micelle concentration" The substitution of fluorine atoms, the most electronegative of all atoms, for the hydrogen atoms in alkyl groups was expected to reverse the direction of the inductive effect within a heteropolar molecule, and its effect on the C-F stretching frequency shifts and on some surface chemical properties became of interest. In a recent study the C-F stretching frequencies of a series of normal perfluorocarboxylic acids and a few 1,1' -dihydroperfluoro alcohols were determined as a function of chain length and the results were compared with the corresponding hydrocarbon analogs. Furthermore, the nature of the induced polarity in the hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon groups was investigated through surface potential measurements at the interfaces of air-aqueous solutions of normal butyl alcohol and of l,l'-dihydroperfluorobutyl alcohol and through differential capacity and electrocapillary measurements at the interfaces of mercury-aqueous solutions containing the above two alcohols. Experimental Normal perfluorocarboxylic acids and 1,1' -dihydroperfluoro alcohols were provided through the courtesy of the 3M Company, St. Paul, Minnesota. Normal butyl alcohol was purchased from Distillation Product Industries, Rochester, New York.
