Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and utilization of a computerized ore control system at Cyprus Coppers tone Gold Mine near Parker, Arizona. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance, and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blast hole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation, and ore zone stakeout, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blast hole information being processed, analyzed, and reported daily.

Short-term mine planning to open pit requires defining diglines to orientate the excavation geometry. In deposits with multiple chemical variables, it is necessary to have more rigorous control over the feeding of the processing plant. This study analyzes the impact of incorporating multiple chemical variables, the risks generated by geological uncertainty, and the number and starting point locations of shovels in the sequential design of diglines. The objective is to maintain and preserve the low-grade variability, required tonnage, and continuity in sequentially selecting blocks. To achieve this, the probability distribution function of each chemical variable is used while attempting to maintain the ore grades as constant as possible. As it is difficult to maintain multiple elements with low variability simultaneously, the relevance of each chemical variable in the economic benefit is identified. Weights are assigned to signal the importance of each element based on its significance in the recovery process. Several diglines, consisting of sequential blocks, were generated on the same seed point to meet the weekly ore demand. Optimizing the stationarity of multiple chemical variables, accessing and reducing the geological uncertainty performed through geostatistical simulation of grades and transfers functions, considering the number and location of shovels, while meeting the operational restrictions of the selected blocks. The optimized digline with the multiple grades as stationary as possible is retained. The process is illustrated in a phosphate mine. The results show that the proposed method is viable and allows for a quick solution.

A new agenda has risen. Born out of governments' policies and world economies, the years ahead will carry with them reduced growth. For inflation dependent and capital intensive industries, such as metals and mining, as well as most other natural resource industries, a period of long-term contraction in outmoded and costly capacity will evolve. This will be supplanted by new, lower cost capacity in some cases, but only if the total cost of production, including cash operating and debt service costs comes in at or below current market conditions. The industrial outlook can be characterized as bearish. As one major U.S. bank economist put it, mining companies planning their five-year forecast from 1984 out, should take the current market conditions and straight-line them to the end of the decade. With low growth and low inflation, the real price of metals will remain flat or slightly declining. As a result, capital funding will be problematic. The low cost producer, that is one with low cash costs and low principal and interest costs per unit of production, will succeed.

"This paper presents a quarry optimization plan using a block model and an in-house development quarry scheduling and optimization software (QSO Expert) to help improve quarry operations at Crystal River. The Crystal River Quarry is an underwater quarrying operation that barges limestone via the Gulf of Mexico, as the main source of raw material to a cement plant in Theodore, Alabama. To improve the quarry operation, an evaluation was completed to optimize the quarry planning and extraction procedures of the quarry. In order to achieve this, additional exploration drilling campaign was implemented, a new block model was re-calculated and the latest version of QSO Expert software was used. The primary economic impact is a higher recovery of limestone reserves; sustainability of resources, corresponding longer quarry life. Secondarily as the limestone is mined underwater and stockpiled above water, drainage reduces moisture content achieving direct cost reduction on limestone shipping. In addition, a considerable reduction in operational cost was achieved due to a significant decrease in consumption of electrical energy, reduced dragline maintenance costs and reduced dragline movements within the operation. INTRODUCTION Holcim is a Swiss-based global building materials and aggregates company. Founded in 1912, the company expanded into France and then throughout Europe and Middle East during the 1920s. In 1922, Holderbank, as the company was then known, expanded beyond the Swiss borders into France. By the end of the decade Holderbank held stakes in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Egypt (Holcim History 1912-2012) Positions in Lebanon and South Africa soon followed.. Holder bank later expanded in North America in the 1950’s. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Holderbank continued its expansion in Latin America, Asia and Spain for the first time. The company expanded into Eastern Europe and experienced a boom in Spanish construction preceding the 1992 Summer Olympics. By 1986, Holderbank was the world's largest cement manufacturer. In the 1990s, the company consolidated its European holdings as the American market drove growth. Expansion into Eastern Europe and Russia continued (Holcim History 1912-2012). In 2001, the company changed its name from ""Holderbank Financière Glaris"" to Holcim (short for Holderbank ciment) (Holcim History 1912-2012). Holcim expanded by purchasing Aggregate Industries entering into the United Kingdom for the first time. That year, the company also expanded into India by acquiring a stakes in The Associated Cement Companies (ACC) and Ambuja Cement Eastern. In 2008, Holcim became the largest shareholder of China's Huaxin Cement with a 40% stake. In 2009, they acquired Cemex Australia. In 2014, Holcim and Lafarge announced they had agreed to terms on a ""merger of equals"" valued at nearly $50 billion in 2015. The new company LafargeHolcim based in Switzerland has a manufacturing capacity of 427 metric million tons a year."

Several factors have caused less emphasis to be placed on geologic mapping in mineral exploration in the last 15 years. These include opportunities for "easy" discoveries of near surface gold and silver deposits in developed countries, and of base metal deposits as well in less developed countries, a decline of emphasis on geologic mapping in many universities, and a decline of useful mapping by government agencies in many areas. Geologic mapping is simply a way of recording geologic observations on volumes of rock larger than can be seen from one place. Since most geologic processes involve systems larger than this, mapping is also essential to understand the significance of observations made on smaller volumes of rock, such as thin sections and sample taken for chemical or isotopic analysis. To be useful, the observations recorded through geologic mapping are then interpreted to arrive at an understanding of the 3D geometry and geologic history of a volume of rock, which is used to direct mineral exploration, or any number of other purposes.

San Francisco, CA will host about 1,500 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world during the biannual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), June 19-22. These professionals are gathering in a city that has seen much under-ground work throughout its history. And, today, the San Francisco region has more than $4.6-billion in tunneling projects under way. The RETC will include three-and-a-half days of technical programming, complete with proceedings, two short courses, two field trips and a host of social activities. In addition, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 127 exhibitors in 152 booths, an RETC record. The following is a brief list of activities that will take place during the conference. "NIOSH research has shown that heat/humidity buildup is a major concern within coal mine refuge alternatives (RAs). These high temperature and humidity levels inside an RA may expose occupants to heat stress. Due to the safety risks associated with testing using human subjects, NIOSH partnered with ThermoAnalytics to create detailed thermal simulation models of RAs with human occupants. The objective of this effort was to predict a miner’s core temperature response and moisture loss in environments that may be encountered in a coal mine RA. These parameters were studied across a range of temperatures and relative humidity values to determine if the current 95°F apparent temperature limit for RAs is reasonable. The results indicated that the 95°F apparent temperature limit is protective, provided that miners are supplied with sufficient water. The results also indicated that the body core temperature did not reach dangerous levels even at an apparent temperature of 130°F. However, the results show that moisture loss increases with apparent temperature. Therefore, if the apparent temperature limit were increased, the water provided in an RA would have to be increased to offset moisture loss. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this effort was to predict a miner’s core temperature and moisture loss (sweating and respiration) in environments that are likely to be encountered in a coal mine refuge alternative (RA). A range of temperatures and relative humidity were studied to determine whether the current 95°F Steadman apparent temperature (AT) limit and 2.25 quart/day water requirements for RAs as mandated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are reasonable [1, 2]. The effects of metabolic heat rate (activity level), miner size (height and weight), and pose (sitting or lying) on core temperature and moisture loss were also studied. MODEL DESCRIPTION TAITherm thermal modeling software (ThermoAnalytics, Inc.) was used to simulate humans in RA-like environments within a range of temperature and relative humidity combinations. The TAITherm Human Thermal Model (HTM) predicts the dynamic thermal response of the simulated miners while accounting for clothing, human tissue thermal properties, and active thermoregulation. The following sections describe the HTM in more detail, the thermal model setup for this analysis, and core temperature and moisture loss metrics found in published literature. Human Thermal Model Overview The TAITherm human thermal model was used to simulate the heat generated by the shelter occupants, and to predict the miners’ skin and core temperatures along with their sweat evaporation rates. The thermoregulation model simulates the process by which the body attempts to maintain a constant core temperature by considering the effects of shivering, sweating, and changes in skin blood flow. This model calculates surface and deep tissue temperatures within the human body as described by a surface mesh."

"Recent government initiatives and commercial activities have targeted asteroids for in-situ characterization, manipulation, and possible resource extraction. Though emergent technologies may be effective for such undertakings, uncertainties remain concerning the effects a space environment may have on the mechanical behavior of rocks. Various non-destructive rock characterization techniques can empirically predict in-situ rock strength on Earth; however, these techniques must be adapted to account for unique space conditions. In order to mimic one element of a space environment, various rock samples were evaluated after prolonged exposure to low temperatures ranging from -75°C to 0°C. Tests included uniaxial compressive strength, Schmidt hammer, and ultrasonic pulse velocity, while rock types included shale, limestone, and chalk. This data was used to generate a temperature correction for the non-destructive methods and evaluate the accuracy of these methods in predicting strength values. Overall, these results provide insight on the mechanical behavior of rocks at low temperatures and may be used to design robust systems needed for asteroid rock characterization INTRODUCTION NASA and various commercial entities have recently targeted near-Earth asteroids for exploration and scientific investigation to better understand their in-situ properties, mechanical characteristics, and formative processes. In particular, NASA’s Asteroid Initiative encompasses several studies and mission plans that will enable future investigations while vetting technologies that can be applied to deep space exploration. One component of the Asteroid Initiative is the Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM). This multi-stage space mission proposes to rendezvous a robotic spacecraft with a large near-Earth asteroid. Upon approach and after landing, the spacecraft will prospect the surface and identify a multi-ton boulder (up to 5 m in its largest dimension) suitable for capture. The robotic spacecraft will engage the boulder, remove it from the parent asteroid, and return the sample to a controlled lunar orbit. Once the asteroid mass is in stable orbit around the moon, astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft will engage with the retrieved asteroid for manned exploration that will include sample collection and geologic prospecting. Launch plans for the ARM robotic craft are expected as early as 2020, and manned explorations of the asteroid mass in lunar orbit are expected to follow sometime in the mid-2020s (NASA, 2015). Overall this mission will demonstrate NASA’s ability to intersect, manipulate, and redirect an extraterrestrial body, while supplying scientific information that is relevant for planetary defense and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) applications."

History of Development The hydrocyclone, probably because of its basic simplicity, has been used for various classification applications since before 1890. A patent was granted in the United States in 1891 to Bretney on a device for separating sand from water, collecting the sand in a closed chamber for intermittent discharge, practically identical to some present-day water desanding cyclones. Between 1900 and 1937 there were 30 or more additional patents issued on liquid cyclone configurations or their use. About 1937 liquid cyclones began to be used commercially in the treatment of cellulose fiber in the pulp and paper industry separating contaminating particles from the fiber in water suspension used for making high grade paper products. Nichols Engineering & Research Corp. of New York was marketing a liquid cyclone for cleaning sand and din particles from fiber suspensions in the pulp and paper industry by 1937. The designs during this period were such that the cyclones discharged a small amount of relatively high density material into a chamber connected to the cyclone apex which in turn discharged the collected dirt material intermittently. By the early 1940s hydrocyclones as we know them today began to appear both in the pulp and paper industry and in coal prorzssing.18 Considerable experimental work was done on small, mostly 3-in.- diam, cyclones operating at relatively high pressure drops, in the range of 50 psi, to remove very small contaminating particles from cellulose fiber in the production of high-grade writing papers in the paper industry.18

There are several limestone deposits around the Lohja area in southern Finland. Raw material for cement rock is mined from some of them. The formations are geologically complicated, and therefore selective mining is used whenever possible. One of these mines is the Tytyri underground limestone mine, which is divided into two parts; Törmä and Solhem. In addition to the selective mining system hand sorting or picking must be used at the Tytyri mine to improve the overall grade of the blended limestone. Some means were needed in order to improve the quality and to increase the feed rate by the elimination of hand sorting. Sorting machines were considered and eventually a Sortex 811MW was pilot plant tested at the Ojamo mine near Tytyri. This machine now continues to be used on production.

DOE recently funded 21 projects under the solicitation by its Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Division. This project is combining the expertise of an interdisciplinary team of researchers with that of three manufacturers to isolate nuclear waste storage sites using remote longwall mining. The concept is being pursued in Germany, too. This paper will present the conceptual approach to the project and discuss the problems in transferring longwall mining technology to nuclear waste containment.

The integrity of shale gas wells in longwall chain pillars under the influence of longwall mining is a safety concern for both coal and gas operators. Previous modeling studies of gas wells in longwall pillars have shown that a FLAC3D model can predict longwall-induced stresses and deformations in gas well casings with reasonable accuracy. The predicted casing deformations can be verified by multi-finger caliper survey. This study concerns the influence of longwall mining on eight shale gas wells in a shale gas well pad located in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels under 1,030 feet of cover. FLAC3D modeling was performed to predict longwall-induced deformations in gas well casings based on site-specific mining and geological conditions. Small deformations less than 0.5 in were predicted in the intermediate casing above 600 ft depth, and very small casing deformations less than 0.15 in were predicted below 600 ft due to high abutment pressure and high frictional resistance along the weak bedding interfaces. After the first panel was mined, a 56-arm caliper survey was performed on one of the wells to measure the longwall-induced casing deformations in the intermediate casing. The predicted casing deformations were then compared with the measured deformations, which indicated that the prediction was generally in good agreement with the measurement in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. Findings from this study provide valuable information not only for stability assessment of shale gas wells in longwall chain pillars but also for developing engineering guidelines to preserve casing integrity through adequate pillar and casing design.

"In many mineral processing applications it is necessary to know the isoelectric points of the various minerals in the ore to properly perform flotation and other mineral separations. However, current zeta potential analysis technology used to determine the isoelectric point of a particle suspension cannot deliver the isoelectric point of each individual mineral, just an average of the mineral system. Traditionally, individual isoelectric points have been gathered by testing pure, synthetic minerals. These values can vary widely depending on the mineral synthesis procedure and the water quality used during the isoelectric point analysis. A more robust approach for determining the actual isoelectric point of a particular mineral in a mixture of minerals is needed. This paper details a method for determining the isoelectric point of an iron oxide mineral in a siliceous iron ore. The method uses a laser scattering particle size analyzer and a pH electrode to determine the pH at which the liberated mineral particles begin to flocculate as pH is decreased. The pH at which the average particle size rises dramatically is the isoelectric point of the mineral with the highest isoelectric point in the ore. This measurement technique was used on natural hematite, goethite and siderite ores as well as a synthetic mixture of pure silica and pure hematite. The results for synthetic hematite mixtures were comparable to literature values.IntroductionRecently there has been an increased interest in the processing of low-grade iron ores (Bolen, 2014; Carlson and Kawatra, 2008, 2011, 2013; Halt et al., 2014; Halt and Kawatra, 2014; Haselhuhn 2012, 2013; Haselhuhn et al., 2012a, 2012b; Kawatra and Halt, 2011; Liu et al., 2014; Manouchehri, 2014; Sandvik and Larsen, 2014; Semberg et al., 2014). The zeta potential of iron ore minerals is a very important and often overlooked aspect of iron ore mineral processing. Zeta potential is the charge at the shear plane of a surface in an aqueous environment (Carlson and Kawatra, 2013). Many ores consist of a variety of minerals differing in zeta potential. This property of a particle surface in water is responsible for either keeping the particles dispersed from each other or flocculated to each other. This is important during many operations such as flotation, desliming and thickening. Zeta potential is primarily a function of the pH of the water and the mineralogy of the particles, though certain ions within the water can also have a significant impact (Haselhuhn, 2012). Consider the following situation: silica (SiO2) particles and hematite (Fe2O3) particles are suspended in an aqueous solution. These two types of minerals have drastically different zeta potentials throughout the pH spectrum (Esumi et al., 1988). In alkaline conditions, both types of particles exhibit negative zeta potentials and will tend to disperse from each other. In acidic conditions (between pH of 3 and 6), silica has a negative zeta potential while hematite has a positive zeta potential, so these surfaces will tend to be attractive to each other and the particles will flocculate and settle. This phenomenon is visually described in Fig. 1. The pH at which the two minerals begin to attract to each other, or destabilize, is near hematite’s isoelectric point. The isoelectric point is defined as the pH at which the surface has a net zero zeta potential (Carlson and Kawatra, 2013)."

What is prime farmland? Can such land, once it has been strip-mined for coal, be restored so that it will produce corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa? What methods or practices are necessary to bring about restoration within a reasonable time so that crop yields will be equivalent to or higher than those of unmined prime farmland under high levels of management? These questions concerned land use researchers in Illinois as early as 1948 when the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station experimented with growing cultivated crops on strip-mined land in St. Clair County (1). This research was done almost 30 years before requirements of Public Law 95-87 were passed by the United States Congress and signed August 3, 1977.

Accurate level detection is required to make full use of level in optimizing control strategies for flotation columns. Techniques based on pressure and electrical conductivity are compared. Pressure and conductivity profiles give good agreement on level. Level calculated from single and multiple pressure values became more accurate using, in order, one, two and three sensor locations. The level estimate remained in error, however, because, unlike the collection zone, froth zone bulk density varies with height. A conductivity probe continually updating the conductance profile is a practical method of obtaining an accurate level.

Dump leaching and ,in-situ solution mining have received considerable attention during the past few years due to their apparent economic viability and minimal environmental impact. Solution mining actually dates back to the 17th century when leaching of copper ore was first reported. However-, modern day leaching didn't begin on a wide scale until the mid-1900's. In-situ mining for copper, nickel, salts, and oil shale is currently looking more attractive as the technology advances. Presently, about 15 percent of the copper production in the United States is from leaching operations at approximately 14 active sites, the largest of which are the waste dumps near the Bingham Copper Mine, Utah. To establish a common background, the discussion is centered around state-of-the-art conditions. For dump leaching, complications inherent to the physical conditions and chemical reactions such as channeling, porosity and permeability, sorption, air flow, rock alteration and pH control are discussed. Emphasis is made on those conditions which render solution recovery rates and solution mineral concentrations unpredictable. By illustrating typical and actual field conditions, the generally accepted flow theories for both dump leaching and in-situ solution mining, including rubblization, are presented. For in-situ mining, hydrogeologic techniques such as geophysical well logging, aquifer testing and digital computer modeling are also discussed. The importance of artificial fracturing and well stimulating to solution injection and recovery is made with regard to project development. During the past year a number of significant advances in geostatistics have been published. These were presented at the 13th APCOM Symposium in Clausthal, Germany and at a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Geostatistics in Rome, Italy. Of greatest importance is the work that has been done in establishing methods which correctly predict the cutoff grade-tonnage curves, and the average grade of ore-tonnage curves for deposits in which ore and waste are intermingled. Grade-tonnage curves based on estimates made from widely spaced exploration data have been found to underestimate the grade of ore and overestimate the tonnage present. This problem has been remedied by the calculation of conditional probability distributions for the unknown grade of a block. Another advance has been made in the field of geostatistical estimation for deposits in which a trend is present. Previously a technique known as universal kriging has been used, which involves much subjective judgement as to the trend fitted. A new technique, generalized increments, allows computer estimation of such deposits with much less subjective judgement. Computational efficiency of geostatistical methods has continued to improve to a point where a geostatistical estimate can be obtained for little more than the cost of any other computerized method.

The world market for bunkers represents some 140 MT (1980) of marine fuel oil and distillates. This is equivalent to 23CMT of coal, a potential market for steam coal larger than the total seaborne trade of steam and metallurgical coal today, and an obvious area which could contribute savings in world oil consumption. Oil bunkers are lifted fairly evenly throughout the world, the main supplying regions being Western Europe, the Middle East, North and Central America and Japan (Figure 1). Not surprisingly, the main customers are the tankers representing about 50 percent of the world market - (95 percent of the Middle East Market) - dry bulkers represent some 30 percent and general cargo ships the rest.

Underground testing was carried out by Ingersoll-Rand, Inc., under contract to the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of a machine-mounted scrubber system for ventilating the face during an extended advance. A continuous miner equipped with an integral flooded-bed dust scrubber system was instrumented with methanometers and Real-time Aerosol Monitor (RAM) dust monitors. Methane and respirable dust data were collected at brattice setbacks of 7.5 m (current operating distance), 10.5 m, and 15 m (blowing ventilation) during production shifts. Results showed that a suitable machine-mounted scrubber system can adequately ventilate the face at brattice setbacks up to 15 m. No deterioration in ventilation performance was observed as brattice setbacks were increased from 7.5 m to 15 m. The scrubber system effectively controlled face methane levels at large setbacks, though respirable dust levels increased as much as 33 pct at the operator's cab at setbacks greater than 7.5 m.
