Disseminated Au-As-Hg mineralization is localized along the Getchell Fault system at the Getchell Mine in north-central Nevada. Replacement ore bodies occur in Cambrian carbonaceous limestone and limy shale beds. Cretaceous granodiorite, dacite porphyry, and andesite porphyry dikes parallel the fault zone and are spatially associated with the mineralization. Hydrothermal alteration and mineralization occur continuously along 4-5 km of the fault system, and extend more than 1 km down-dip. Alteration consists primarily of removal of carbonate and deposition of quartz, pyrite, and carbonaceous material. Marcasite, sericite, kaolinite, calcite, barite, and fluorite are common. Gold content reaches more than 43 ppm in parts of the altered zones and averaged 9.3 ppm in the mined ore bodies. For the mineralized zones as a whole arsenic averages 0.28%, and occurs primarily as realgar, orpiment, and arsenopyrite. Mercury (22 ppm) is finely disseminated and mercury-bearing minerals are seldom recognizeable. Accessory mineralization includes antimony (100 ppm), copper (47 ppm) , lead (18 ppm) , molybdenum (10 ppm) , tungsten (16 ppm) , and zinc (50 ppm) . Geologic field studies and K-Ar dating suggest that the mineralization is related to a hydrothermal system produced by the granodiorite and related dikes.

The extraction and recovery of gold from copper electrorefining slimes by leaching and solvent extraction using dibutyl carbitol (DBC) has been practiced for several decades. Yet, the deportment of some common elements in this process has not been reported. The focus of this paper is to report the behavior of copper, bismuth, silver and selenium during the processing of industrial solutions by batch and continuous extraction on the laboratory scale. It was found that DBC, while an excellent extractor of gold from a highly oxidative chloride leach solution, also loads significant quantities of Cu, Bi, and Se. Silver was not present in significant quantities in the leach solution nor did it load appreciably. The deportment of gold and impurities are reported for batch and continuous operations of a two-stage extraction process using distribution ratios and separation factors.

Although the role of the collector has long been thought to play a predominant role in coal flotation, recent investigations by the authors show that the frother plays an equally important role. These investigations have included extensive testwork in several coal preparation plants and in the laboratory. The factors which were investigated include the absolute level of collector and frother addition, the ratio of frother to collector additions, the type of frother, and the particle size distribution of the feed. Results from this testwork reveal strong interactions between these factors as well as the necessity of considering these factors in order to optimize the reagent regime.

The Archaean Yilgam craton has been a major gold province since 1888 with production and reserves of about 4700 tonnes. Production in 1994 was about 135 tonnes. The largest deposit, the famous Kalgoorlie Golden Mile, contains about 2000 tonnes of gold. About 40 deposits containing more than 35 tonnes (1Moz) of gold has been discovered so far in the Yilgarn. Most of the craton has deep weathering profiles inherited from previous tropical climatic conditions, modified by subsequent arid conditions. A mantle of transported material covers much of the variably stripped weathering profiles. Resolving the geology of the volcanic-sedimentary units (greenstones) and the structures that host the gold mineralization relies heavily on aeromagnetics and shallow drilling.

Since 1980, more than 40 miners have lost their lives by being trapped and suffocating in stock-piles, bins, silos, and similar facilities. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is concerned about these accidents, most of which could be prevented if management and miners appreciated the hazard. In February 1986, the coal industry had a suffocation accident that drew national attention. A group of engineers were standing on a coal stockpile. It gave way under their feet. Five of the engineers were buried in the coal and suffocated. As with all fatal accidents, MSHA investigated the cause of this tragedy. I also asked my staff to look into the history of similar accidents. I found out it is rare to have multiple fatalities due to suffocation in material. But, over the years, there has been a long series of individual fatalities from this type of accident. Here are some examples. In Oct. 1985, a coal mine employee in Virginia entered a hopper to collect a coal sample. The feeders were started while he was standing in the hopper. He sank into the coal and suffocated. In Sept. 1985, an employee at a Texas sand company climbed onto a surge pile, to check a problem with sand flow. When other employees found him, the sand had swallowed him. Only his face and one hand were showing. Though the victim's face was clear of the sand, he suffocated before rescuers could free him. Many people do not realize you can suffocate in this kind of situation, though your head is free. Every time you exhale, the material has room to shift and press harder against your chest. Then you have less room to inhale. If this goes on long enough, it gets to the point where you cannot inhale at all. That is what happened to the victim in this accident. In May 1985, a plant operator at a Wisconsin sand and gravel operation purposely slid into the drawhole of a surge pile. He tried to break up large rocks that were clogging the drawpoint. Material piled on the side of the surge pile slid down and buried him. The operator was wearing a safety belt and line. But he was covered by 3 to 3.7 m (10 to 12 ft) of material and could not be pulled free. This incident illustrates another point. A safety line can help. But it is not enough. Workers should never put themselves in a position where loose material can fall on them from above. In Jan. 1985, a young Utah coal miner was waiting for a ride home from a co-worker whose job was at the tipple. A jam developed in the coal bin. The men could not clear the jam from the outside. So the young miner jumped into the bin. He started digging with a shovel at the toe of the coal pile. It caved in on him and he suffocated. The young miner had only three months of mining experience. He had not been trained for work around the coal bin. Since 1980, 16 coal miners and 26 nonmetal miners have lost their lives in loose-material suffocation accidents. Suffocation accidents occur in many areas around mines - bins, hoppers, stockpiles, surge piles, and silos, among others. One recent accident occurred at a surface coal mine in Illinois. The victim was walking over an area that had been drilled and blasted the week before. He fell into a void that had been crusted over with earth. He too suffocated. And many materials have been involved in suffocation accidentscoal, crushed stone, sand, salt, different kinds of ore, ammonium nitrate pellets used in blasting, and a powdery byproduct of iron ore milling called calcine. In addition to fatal accidents, there are near misses. We do not know how many. Most of them are not reported. A person who gets trapped in material, but is rescued, is usually unhurt. MSHA sometimes hears about these accidents by chance, or because they are reported in the local media. We do know that near misses are happening far more often

INTRODUCTION Background and Objectives Underground coal mining is a vital component of West Virginia's economy. However adverse environmental effects including ground subsidence and aquifer dewatering are often associated with such mining activities. Many families in northern West Virginia still rely on private water wells and springs for domestic water needs. In such areas where underground coal extraction and land subsidence have occurred, a disruption of the ground water flow system commonly exists with subsequent drainage of water to lower levels that may extent as deep as the mine workings; this causes loss of water supplies to landowners and represents a nuisance to mining companies 2 This report represents a summary of an M. S. thesis project in geology at West Virginia University by the senior author (3). The intent for this study was to document the effects of underground coal removal on ground water levels at selected mine sites in northern West Virginia, as observed from water wells, springs, and streams. This research should be useful to coal companies and regulatory agencies and aid in recommendations of future water well locations and specifications in areas of existing or proposed underground coal mines.

The capability for on-line measurement of the quality characteristics of conveyed coal now enables mine operators to take advantage of the inherent heterogeneity of those streams and split them into wash and no-wash stocks. Relative to processing the entire stream, this reduces the amount of coal that must be washed at the mine and thereby reduces processing costs, recovery losses, and refuse generation levels. In this paper, new approaches for optimal control of the segregation process, using time series models and empirical distributions, are presented and demonstrated using field data.

In the search for economic mineral deposits, the need for efficient mineral or chemical assays is of prime importance. Costly analytical methods and long delays in obtaining assay results severely limit the effectiveness of an exploration program. The assay problem becomes acute once a potential ore body is located and large numbers of samples are generated in close interval drilling programs. In order to avoid the delays and high costs of extensive assays, the exploration geologist or mining engineer is likely to be required to curtail his drilling program, composite samples, or restrict the required analyses to a limited number of critical elements. As a result, the definition of the potential ore body may be less than needed for final economic evaluation. The assay requirements for bauxite exploration usually involve a considerable number of total elemental and empirical analysis. Since the Bayer process for extracting alumina from bauxite involves the selective dissolution and reaction of specific minerals from the bauxite, a direct chemical analysis for elemental composition yields only a portion of the data required to effectively describe the potential economic value of ore body or deposit. To fully characterize the economic value of a bauxite requires digestion, mud separation and mud settling tests under conditions approximating a commercial Bayer plant. A close approximation of the process behavior of a bauxite also can be calculated from a combination of the chemical and mineralogical analyses. By determining the elemental chemistry, mineralogy, and Bayer plant processing characteristics of a few samples of a given bauxite, correlations can be derived that permit defining a bauxite in terms of a given set of process conditions.

Placing a detonating explosive inside a volume of rock is an efficient method of rock fragmentation. The explosion generates internal tensile stresses in the rock, and because rock is a brittle material, this brings about crack propagation and fragmentation far more efficiently than does application of explosive on the surface. To get the explosive inside, we drill a pattern of boreholes and charge the explosive into the holes. This is really the one and only purpose of making blastholes in mining: to give access for the explosive to the interior of the rock. No matter how big and expensive a drilling jumbo we stand up in front of a rock face, and no matter how many boreholes we let it drill, the rock does not fall apart by itself without blasting. It is the action of the explosive in the boreholes that does it. When we consider that we need a pound or two of explosive for every cubic yard of rock to be fragmented, and a pint of borehole volume for each pound of explosive, we see that the process of blasthole charging is an important element in the whole process of rock blasting.

This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

The Navajo Mine is exclusively a multiple seam surface coal mine located in the northwest corner of New Mexico, and entirely on the Navajo Indian Reservation (Figure 1). It is owned and operated by the Broken Hill Propriety Co., Ltd. of Melbourne, Australia. The mine began production in January 1963 with a long term fuel supply agreement with the Four Corners Power Plant. The 2175 MW nominal generating capacity of the Four Corners Power Plant consumes 8-8.5 mm tons of coal annually. With estimated reserves totaling 1.1 billion tons of strippable coal, only one third is presently committed to the generating station. As development has continued over the years, mining operations have advanced into more complex geologic areas to satisfy the utilities demand for coal.

U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies show that 43.5% of surveyed coal preparation plant workers had noise exposures exceeding the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration permissible exposure level of 90 dB(A). Sound levels around vibrating screens in these plants often exceed 90 dB(A). NIOSH is currently developing noise controls for horizontal vibrating screens. To characterize noise sources, NIOSH researchers performed sound pressure level (SPL) measurements on a vibrating screen at their Office of Mine Safety and Health Research laboratory in Pittsburgh. The results show that the entire screen contributes to noise below 1 kHz, and the vibration mechanism housings are most significant above 1 kHz. Constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments and an enclosure were used to reduce mechanism housing noise in this range from 1-10 kHz. These were evaluated using sound power level measurements according to ISO 3744. The CLD treatments reduced the A-weighted sound power level by 3.1 dB in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands. A panel-on-frame vibration mechanism enclosure using various types of panels further reduced the A-weighted sound power level from the CLD configuration in the 1 to 10 kHz one-third-octave bands by 3.7, 4.0, and 3.9 dB for aluminum, steel, and Dynalam™ panels, respectively. The combination yielded a 7 dB reduction from baseline in A-weighted sound power for the same frequency range.

Poland lies at the junction of three geologic provinces: the East European Precambrian platform, the Middle European Paleozoic platform, and the Alpine orogenic belt comprising the Carpathian Mountains. However most of the rocks that contain mineral deposits and many of the recently explored and mined deposits are commonly hidden under thick overburden, sometimes up to over 500 m thick. The discovery of these mineral deposits was due to the combination of geologists talents for inference and the keen interpretation of geophysical data ultimately tested by drilling. Examples of such use of the state-of-the-art geology include the following: 1. Sedimentologic and paleogeographic reconstructions led to the discovery of 8.8 Gt of bituminous coal under 500 m of Jurassic and Cretaceous cover in the Lublin basin, 2. Tectonic and paleogeografic data suggested a potential for discovery of burried Upper Permian copper de-posits on the Foresudetic monocline; subsequent exploration discovered 75 Mt of copper and 0,17 Mt of silver, 3. Geological interpretation of gravity and magnetic da-ta combined with sedimentologic data and regional subsur-face geology resulted in the location of 1.3 Gt of Fe-Ti-V ore in the Precambrian basement of northeastern Poland under -500 m of cover 4. A combination of metallogenic theory and geological interpretation of regional geophysical mapping led to the discovery of Caledonian-Hercynian granites and grano-diorites with accompanying porphyry-type Mo-W-Cu ores below 300 m cover on the northeastern border of the Upper Silesian coal basin 5. Tectonic reconstructions based on gravity and seismic data combined with theory on the origin of native sulfur led to the discovery of 1.0 Gt of native sulfur under cover up to 300 m thick. Five deposits were found at the northern margin of the Carpathian Foredeep. The other deposits found include lignite, polyhalite, lead-zinc ores.

Introduction Cross borehole seismic tomography (CBST) is a geophysical technique that allows definition of the distribution of some physical rock property between two boreholes. The method is similar to the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scans used by the medical industry. This paper describes the method, its applications and the developing trends in its use that interest the mining industry. The idea of using tomography in connection with geophysical methods for measuring rock properties between boreholes has been around for three or four decades. Until the advent of high-speed, large-capacity computers, the necessary calculations were too formidable for production use. Another factor in the development of the technique has been the refinement of a mathematical base to meet the needs of the medical industry. The geophysical applications have benefited from this refinement. An extensive discussion of the basic theory is given in Kak and Slaney (1988). CBST, although widely researched and written about, is still not extensively put to use in mining and engineering projects. Most real world examples in the literature have come from research carried out by government laboratories or by large companies. An exception is the regular use by Prospection Geophysique Francaise (Cottin et al., 1986) in damsite investigations. The Japanese appear to be doing extensive research and testing of CBST's uses in civil engineering projects (Saito et al., 1988). Canada is researching the use of the method in connection with nuclear waste site investigations (Wong et al., 1987). Finland has tested the method in connection with a foundation investigation for a nuclear power plant (Cosma et al., 1984). In the US, the US Bureau of Mines has taken an interest in using CBST as a means to enhance in situ mining operations (Tweeton, 1988). Major oil companies are examining the method as a tool in oil field development (Justice et al., 1989). Description of the method CBST involves placing a series of receivers down one borehole and recording transmissions from an energy source placed successively at a series of positions in another hole. The objective is to generate a dense network of seismic raypaths between the holes. The denser the network of raypaths, the better the features between the boreholes are resolved. Either seismic travel times or sine wave amplitudes are measured by the receivers. Analysis of travel times between boreholes develops a picture of rock velocities between the holes. Analysis of seismic wave amplitudes develops a picture of the distribution of energy transmission characteristics between the holes. These seismic properties can be used to define occurrences of fracture zones, lenticular sequences or other important geologic data not apparent from examination of the borehole logs. When longitudinal (compressional) and transverse (shear) waves are analyzed, the physical properties, such as elastic moduli, can also be mapped. When wave amplitudes are measured, rather extensive corrections to the data are necessary. There is some disagreement among researchers as to the feasibility of making some of the corrections. For this reason, this paper will concentrate primarily on travel time analysis. Wave amplitude analysis will be mentioned occasionally only in passing. This does not mean that amplitude analysis does not provide important data on rock parameters, only that for the present there are limitations on its uses. Vertical seismic profiling (VSP), extensively used in recent years in oil exploration, is similar to CBST. Instead of using two boreholes, however, the VSP method uses an array of seismic sources or detectors down one hole and an array of detectors or sources along the surface radiating outward from the hole. While adequate for determining vertical velocity distributions, the VSP method is not, by itself, suitable for most engineering or mining projects. As most of you have probably surmised from the title of my paper, I am here today to talk with you about the use of diesel engines in the American mining industry and whether or not the free choice to use such equipment will continue to be available to mine operators. Of course, I will present to you my prepared remarks, however, these remarks may be essentially academic in light of a news release, parts of which I would like to read to you. Washington, D. C., The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare today announced proposed new regulations to reduce occupational health risks to workers in the U. S. mining industries by requiring the removal of all diesel powered equipment from American mines by December 31st "While we do not have complete and conclusive information to quantify these health risks we feel it is prudent to undertake this restriction on the use of diesel powered equipment without waiting for the completion of studies that are currently underway to identify and quantify these health risks," said a Department spokesman. HEW has been concerned about the health risks of diesel emissions in the underground coal mines for some time and have investigations underway designed to conclusively demonstrate the nature and magnitude of any health risks. However, HEW has decided to proceed with these regulations without waiting for the final results of these investigations. Further, HEW feels there is sufficient probability that diesel health risks do exist in all mining applications and consequently, the proposed regulations will apply to all surface and underground mining operations. It goes on a little further and indicates that due to the necessity of finalizing these regulations without delay, a period of fifteen days has been provided to receive comments regarding these proposed regulations.

As hard rock mining develops deeper over time, there is an increasing need to predict the spatial and temporal distribution of adverse seismogenic rockmass reaction to mining. Real-time monitoring and feedback of mine data are used to tactically manage risk associated with induced-seismicity; however, strategic risk management requires reliable tools for forward predictions of seismic hazard. The forward prediction of seismic hazard is strengthened by understanding of potential seismic intensity, which often relies on well calibrated mine-wide numerical models. This paper uses a case study to explore how future seismogenic potential and the nature of future seismicity can be domained according to numerically predicted stress-strain paths at past seismic event locations. Delineation of high confinement seismogenic volumes vs. lower-confinement, high-strain seismogenic volumes at the mine-scale can be achieved, based on a loading and unloading stress path analogue, to refine understanding of seismic intensity. Practical qualitative and quantitative methods to achieve this delineation will be demonstrated. Once seismogenic mode (high-stress vs. high-strain) is identified, detailed analyses of seismic source parameters demonstrates change in seismic hazard between the domained volumes.

In recent years exploration and development of low-grade sulfide precious metal ore deposits has increased. Low- grade ores are usually processed using conventional heap leach cyanidation methods. The potential for acid mine drainage from spent sulfide ore heap leached residues remains a concern even though the processed residue is stacked on an impervious liner system. It is therefore of critical importance to evaluate methods for long term prevention of acid mine drainage from sulfide heap leachable ores during the precious metal recovery process rather than mitigation during the closure and reclamation phase. This paper discusses two simple AMD prevention options for the recovery process phase. Laboratory evaluations were made using a modified humidity cell kinetic AMD test method on two low-grade sulfide ores without addition of an alkaline component and on the same ores with natural limestone or acid neutralizing oxide ore blended with the feeds before kinetic testing. Laboratory results are discussed in detail and demonstrate that blending an acid neutralizing component with sulfide ore effectively prevents the production of acid from the processed residue.

Electrochemical properties of silicate minerals govern their behavior in processes such as flocculation and enhanced oil recovery that can occur at elevated temperatures. Knowledge of these properties as a function of temperature can be helpful in developing an under- standing of the role of these interfacial properties at non-ambient temperatures. Zeta potential of Sodium Kaolinite and quartz has been determined as a function of pH and temperature in this work. Both systems exhibited markedly different behavior at higher temperatures and also exhibited significant hysteresis. Results are examined in terms of possible dissolution of the minerals and surface reactions at different temperatures.

Over the last 20 years, the manufacturing sector of our country has been called upon to comply with ever core stringent environmental standards. The primary metals sector was particularly hard hit early on, to develop the technology, acquire the equipment, and implement the programs to eliminate or reduce the by-products of metal making. To this end, through a combination of technological innovation and extensive capital expenditures, the metals industry has met, and in many cases, exceeded the minimum standards. It is to this escalating cost - liability exposure issue - that Dereco has addressed itself. As we move into the decade of the 90's, the challenge facing the metals industry concerning the environment will be even more difficult than the previous decade. To focus in on one major aspect of legislated environmental regulations, the issue we will address today is; now that the by-products of metal production have been identified, accounted for and collected, how are they to be disposed of? During the course of this presentation, actual data will be presented from our 4 1/4 year on-site experience at J & L Specialty Products

The effect of a lower tin price, due to a current major world surplus of tin metal, is mentioned and covered in some detail. The names and locations of over 100 USA firms recovering tin residues are listed. Current smelting and refining charges are included to convert the residues into tin metal and alloy. The impact of the suspension of the LME daily tin price since October 24, 1985 to date, and the failure of the International Tin Council to support the Buffer Stock Manager are reported with comments.
