"Recent requirements to reduce thermal coal plant emissions, and ultrafine coal's tendency to produce these emissions due to its typically high ash and moisture contents have limited the use of ultrafine coal. Ultrafine coal in beneficiation plants are usually either disposed of in tailing ponds at a loss in combustible material or disposed of by blending with coarser higher-grade products, resulting in a reduction in marketed product quality. A study of the options for processing ultrafine coal, consisting of < 200 µm hydrocyclone overflow, with 38.8 percent ash content is presented here. Ultrafine coal was processed based on 200-µm sieve bend and 10-µm hydrocyclone classifications, enhanced gravity separation (EGS) and froth flotation concentration as well as combinations of these. Yield, combustible material recovery (CMR) and product humidity were evaluated as test results.Depending on the processing applied, product ash content could be reduced up to 49.7 percent, and up to 95.8 percent CMR of the actual run of mill feed could be attained. All of the processing options analyzed could reduce produced thermal electric plant emissions due to ash and moisture from 22 to 38 percent of the actual unprocessed ultrafine coal product.Froth flotation was found to be the optimal process, yielding a product with the lowest ash content attained of 19.5 percent and CMR of 92.3 percent. Being the most versatile of the processes evaluated, it is capable of producing coal with varied ash contents but is subject to potential variations in coal flotability. The most complicated of the processing options, a combined sieve bend recovery of the > 200 µm fraction and EGS processing of the 10 to 200 µm fraction was found to be the next best option, attaining a combined 90.1 percent CMR and 25.0 percent ash content. IntroductionMunicipal, regional and national objectives to reduce fossil fuel combustion emissions and their effects on air quality and global weather changes are affecting thermal electric plant operations. Plans and regulations such as President Obama's Clean Power Plan (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2015), the European Directive 2010/75/EU (European Commission, 2010) and China’s proposed Enhanced Actions on Climate Change (Wei, 2015) are of major significance to thermal electric plant operations. Although thermal plant efficiencies depend in large part on the losses of heat by plant components, the ash and humidity contents of thermal coal invariably reduce plant efficiencies and increase emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and dust.Any noncombustible material present in thermal coal will result in higher CO2 emissions per unit of energy produced. Since no particle emission control can be totally effective, it is to be anticipated that any reduction in coal ash content will also result in reduced particle emissions. Kurose, Ikeda and Makino (2001) reported that NOx emissions also increase with coal ash content. The effect of coal moisture content during combustion is complex. Kurose, Ikeda and Makino (2001) showed that an increase in coal moisture content significantly reduces thermal NOx to total NOx production, and Bosoaga et al. (2006) showed that it tends to reduce NOx emissions. Since the humidity, pyrite and ash content of thermal coals directly affect thermal electric plant efficiencies and emissions, minimizing these factors should facilitate, at least in part, compliance with thermal electric plant emission limits. This, in turn, would affect the specifications and prices of the coal preparation plant products."

In order to understand the flotation kinetic behavior of coal and associated mineral matter, a detailed investigation was conducted in a 2-liter Denver flotation cell using three high sulfur coals at three feed sizes, minus 28. 100 and 200 mesh. Subsequently. the flotation products were sieved into different size fractions and analyzed for their ash and pyritic sulfur content in order to delineate the effect of particle size on the rate at which each constituent floats. The results were tested with several different flotation kinetic models and the best model for coal was then chosen. The flotation rate constant and the ultimate recovery calculated from a kinetic model were used to delineate the effect of particle size, collector (dodecane) and frother (MIBC) dosages on the flotation kinetics of coal, ash and pyrite.

Solids and liquid phase residence time distribution data is reported for a laboratory column flotation cell. The effects of various physical flotation parameters on residence time distributions are reported and analyzed. A plug flow model with recycle is proposed for the froth phase and a tanks in series model for the pulp. By comparison of two and three phase residence time -distribution data it has been shown that the use of liquid residence time distribution data to predict the residence time distribution of the solids in a column is not valid.

The problem of estimating pillar capacity in coal mines has motivated development of a variety of empirical equations. Most of these equations have arisen from experience and a very limited set of measurements that have, necessarily, been focused on particular regions or coal fields. Their applicability is often limited to a specific range of pillar sizes. This is of particular concern in the design of large gateroad pillars and small barrier pillars between panels. The result has been a variety of equations and equation coefficients that can calculate load estimates to size pillars. Inclusion of these equations in more sophisticated loading models, such as boundary element methods (e.g. LaModel and MULSIM) has been hampered by absence of a function that describes specific variation of coal strength within the pillar. A singular exception, to our knowledge, is a function corresponding to the Bieniawski pillar strength equation. Because of this, it is the only coal strength criteria inherently available in most boundary element models. This paper presents a general method for deriving local coal strength, as a function of distance from the pillar rib, for an arbitrary pillar strength equation. Integration of this function provides the strength of pillar regions, or cells, needed for boundary element models. The method is demonstrated for the Bieniawski, Maleki and Holland-Gaddy equations. The Maleki and Holland-Gaddy equations contrast strongly with Bieniawski as strengths are extrapolated to large pillars and barriers. This development provides a tool for incorporating any of the proposed empirical equations into a boundary element model, thereby allowing the analyst to choose the most appropriate equation for a particular region, coal seam and/or pillar size.

Volcanic ash, although a little-used Kansas resource, is available in forty counties with estimated, reserves of more than 20 million tons. It was first produced in Kansas in the early 1900?s but not until the early 1920 is did it become an important abrasive material. Total production to date is estimated at 2 million tons, the major use being as an abrasive in scouring compounds and soaps, additional uses include ceramic glazes, an additive in cement, and a filler and stabilizer in hot mix asphalt for paving. Unrecorded tonnages have also been used in construction of black-top (macadam) roads. From 1916 through 1944, Kansas ranked first among the states in volcanic ash production; peak production was about 52, 000 tons in 1923. Since 1945, production has steadily declined, primarily because materials other than volcanic ash are now being used for abrasives; only two producers operated in 1964.

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are used in the flotation of iron values present in iron ore. Among the several fatty acids, oleic acid and its sodium salt are widely used. To substantiate the flotation results, the quantum chemical calculations of a few such acids have been carried out by adopting the semi-empirical AM1 method. These acids have been further optimized in the presence of an iron atom. The electronic interaction of the polar carboxylic head group of oleic acid with the iron atom is higher compared to the other acids. The fundamental error associated to the sampling of heterogeneous ore particles is unavoidable and can only be minimized by an adequate selection of the sample mass and/or size reduction of the sample before division into sub samples for testing or assaying. The preparation of ore batches to carry out the mineral processing evaluation of an ore is a sampling process. The fundamental error associated with the division of the ore into batches is responsible for the differences in the composition of the batches. This paper attempts by various means to assess the reproducibility of the gold content of test batches prepared from a gold ore sample. The results of the investigation shows that for fine gold grain sizes the variability in the composition of the batches is less than that predicted by Gy?s formula and that the gold grain size is a strategic information in the assessment of the gold content variability of test batches.

During the past two years a computer program called "COPOR," Computerized Open Pit Optimization Routine, has been developed and used for mine planning of several base metal deposits. This routine utilizes a three dimensional computerized block model of an orebody, some economic parameters and operating constraints to locate the mineable or economic limits of the deposit schedule the yearly production from the mine and produce bench by bench ore reserve summaries and maps of the yearly and ultimate pit configurations. The moving cone method is used to perform these functions with a conventional block model. This model is conventional in the sense that each block is assumed to be homogenous; i.e., either ore or waste but not a mixture of the two. Due to the nature of a seam type deposit this approach is not realistic; therefore, revisions have been made to form a new version of the COPOR program. This version has been named "COALOR," Coal Optimization Routine. COALOR contains all of the power of the COPOR program but is equipped to handle the intricacies of coal seam type deposits. The deposit can be composed of a single seam or multiple seams which are horizontal or dipping at any angle. The numerous coal quality values can be incorporated to aid the optimization of the economic pit limits and yearly scheduling.

Many of the major copper ore bodies throughout the world contain chalcocite (79.9% Cu) as the principal copper mineral, yet the grades of copper concentrates produced from these ores rarely exceeds 25 to 28% Cu and in one known instance went as low as 13%. The low grade has traditionally been attributed to the presence of "activated pyrite" and/or chalcopyrite, and the universal approach has been excessive regrinding with all of its inherent effects-high capital, energy and maintenance costs, excessive sliming, and concentrate filtration difficulties (high moisture content). E. P. Cadwell, former Chief Metallurgist for American Cyanamid Company, did extensive microscopical studies on several of these types of concentrates from South American operations during the 1950&apos;s and discovered they all had one common feature--the pyrite particles in the concentrate were all rimmed with thin films of secondary chalcocite or covellite. As far as a flotation bubble or reagent is concerned, a rim of chalcocite is the same as a solid particle of chalcocite, and as long as a rim is present, the particle is going to float. Upon examination of these rimmed particles under the microscope, it becomes quite obvious why regrinding will never solve the problem and why maximum increases in grade by this technique rarely give improvements in grade of greater than 3 to 5% Cu.

INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company&apos;s goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company&apos;s goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. Froth flotation technique is an effective and efficient process for recovering of ultra-fine (minus 74 pm) clean coal. Economical dewatering of an ultra-fine clean coal product to a 20 percent level moisture will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced cleaning processes. This study is a step in the Department of Energy&apos;s program to show that ultra-clean coal could be effectively dewatered to 20 percent or lower moisture using either conventional or advanced dewatering techniques. The main focus of the pilot plant study was on proof-of-concept testing of a dewatering technique for a fine clean coal product. The coal industry is reluctant to use the advanced fine coal recovery technology due to the non-availability of an economical dewatering process.

The mining industry is a major consumer of rock anchors in the United States. Due to the high humidity in the underground coal-mining environment, the rock anchors corrode and lose their load bearing capacity, which, in turn, reduces the life expectancy of the ground support. This creates operational difficulties and a number of safety concerns (Li and Linblad, 1999). Research on rock anchor corrosion has not been adequate in the past and the effects of several factors in the mine atmosphere and waters are not clearly understood. One of the probable reasons for this lack of research may be attributed to the time required for gathering meaningful data. Underground water samples from different mines in the Illinois coal basin were collected and the major chemical content was analyzed and used for laboratory testing. The corrosion performance of the different commercial rock anchors was investigated by techniques such as laboratory immersion tests in five different corrosion chambers and potentiodynamic polarization tests in simulated ground waters based on the Illinois coal basin. The tensile strengths were measured for the selected rock anchors taken every three months from the salt spray corrosion chambers maintained at different pH values and temperatures. The corrosion potential, corrosion current and the corresponding corrosion rates of the #5, #6, #6 epoxy-coated and #7 forged-head rebar steels, #6 and #7 threaded-head rebar steels were measured in the pHs of 5 and 8 at room temperature. The open circuit potential (OCP) readings of the different rock anchors were recorded in three selected underground coal mines (A, B & C) in the Illinois coal basin and the data compared with the laboratory electrochemical tests for analyzing the life of the rock anchors installed in the mines with respect to corrosion current measured.

Cu-As feedstocks are among the most problematic copper sources that have been avoided over the past years. The high arsenic content of such ores/concentrates combined with their refractory nature have directed the metallurgical industry towards developing efficient technologies for the treatment of high-arsenic copper ores/concentrates. As the most important member of Cu-As-S mineral system, enargite (Cu3AsS4) is frequently encountered in some of the important copper deposits. Several hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes have been examined for the treatment of enargite concentrates, but currently, no commercial operation exists. In an effort to develop an original processing option, an acid bake-leach process has been identified and applied to an enargite concentrate containing ~67% enargite, ~27% pyrite (FeS2), ~3% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), ~6% sphalerite (ZnS) and <1% galena (PbS). Sulfuric acid baking of this concentrate resulted in the transformation of the concentrate to S8, As2O3, HFe(SO4)2?4H2O, PbSO4 and Cu0.47Fe0.53SO4?H2O, all of which (except elemental sulfur and PbSO4) dissolved during the water leaching step. More than 87% Cu and 64% As were leached when the concentrate was baked at 200°C over 7 h with a sulfuric acid to concentrate weight ratio of 1.6. Less than 1% As was lost to the gas phase. Upon water leaching, copper and arsenic were released to the solution at a concentration ratio of about 3:1. While enargite is very reactive during the sulfuric acid baking reaction, other minerals present in the concentrate such as pyrite, galena, and sphalerite may compete to consume sulfuric acid and be converted into their corresponding sulfates at different levels. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate phase transformations during the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of an enargite concentrate, and to study the effect of sulfuric acid dosage on the extraction of Cu, Fe, and As. In this regard, the concentrate, baked concentrate, and the leach residues are characterized and a conceptual process flowsheet is described for the acid bake-leach process for the treatment of enargite concentrates.

The efficient management of the distribution of goods and services is important throughout the minerals industry. From the scheduling of processing plant operations, to the routing of work crews in mines, to the planning of product development, vast amounts of time, energy, and money are wasted due to poor planning and scheduling. Thus, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating computational algorithms that can be used to minimize the economic losses related to scheduling and allocating resources. Although there is commercial software available for tackling many scheduling problems, there has been little relief provided for solving the difficult traveling salesman with time windows problem (TSTW). The TSTW problem is a "derivative" of the classic traveling salesman problem, and can be used to minimize the distance traveled by vehicles or personnel to visit all points on a tour, with the additional constraint that each point on the tour must be visited within a specified time window. This paper is a survey of published work in which genetic algorithms have been used to efficiently solve the traveling salesman problem and its more difficult derivative, the TSTW problem. A genetic algorithm is a search algorithm based on the mechanics of natural genetics, and has been used to solve a broad spectrum of engineering optimization problems. Results indicate that the versatility, searching power, and simplicity of genetic algorithms can be used to provide substantial improvement in the area of scheduling and resource allocation.

The electrochemical nature of mineral-collector interactions and their relationship to flotation have been investigated to develop a better understanding of the factors controlling sulfide mineral beneficiation. Spectrophotometric and electrochemical techniques have been used to examine the reactions occurring on electrodes composed of a bed of bornite particles in the presence and absence of potassium ethylxanthate (KEtX) at a pH of 9.2. The combined techniques showed that KEtX sequentially reacts with bornite by (1) a chemisorption reaction forming ca hydrophobic species between --0.4 and -0.2 V (SCE), (2) an electrochemical oxidation reaction forming cuprous xanthate between -- 0.2 V and the xanthate/ dixanthogen redox potential, and (3) oxidation to dixanthogen when the potential exceeds the reversible value for the xanthate/dixanthogen couple. The flotation response of bornite closely parallels spectrophotometric and electrochemical evidence for adsorption of KEtX by the reactions listed above. The degree of surface oxidation resulting from the formation of iron oxides on the surface dictates the flotation response as evidenced by the fact that oxidized bornite floats at more anodic potentials than unoxidized bornite. The strong correlations between the flotation response, degree of oxidation, and potential indicate that chemisorbed xanthate produces a hydrophobic layer sufficient to float unoxidized bornite, but cuprous xanthate and dixanthogen arc required to float oxidized bornite.

Or that the mining division has 800 machines in operation worldwide, 100 of them in the United States. And the company currently holds 30% of market share worldwide and 10% in the United States. Forget about the fact that it has already sold more machines world-wide this year than it did during 1995. None of that is good enough. O&K Mining GmbH Dortmund is the mining division of Germany’s giant O&K Orenstein and Koppel. It is one of three divisions of O&K Orenstein and Koppel AG, a US$1.2-billion company. The other two divisions are construction equipment and escalators. The mining division, though, is one of the company’s most successful.

The effect of oxygen partial pressure on the volatilization percentages of valuable metals from iron-rich pyrite cinder by chlorination-volatilization method using CaCl2 as chlorinating agent was investigated in this study. The volatile products were collected directly and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. It was found that there were CuCl2, CuCl, PbCl2, and ZnCl2 existed in the volatile products. Au and Pb volatilization percentages were almost not affected by oxygen partial pressure. Both Cu and Zn volatilization percentages were negatively correlated with oxygen partial pressure when CaCl2 dosage was no more than 4 wt%, and almost uncorrelated with oxygen partial pressure with a CaCl2 dosage of 6 wt%.

The plant data were collected from three streams around a dense medium drum for coarse coal cleaning operated at various volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed. The effect of the volumetric ratio of medium-to-feed (MF) and particle sizes on the performance criteria, g50 and Ep, of the dense medium drum. These measured data were adjusted and calculated for the yields and balanced relative density distributions by mass balanced method based on the statistic principle. These balanced data were then used to formulate the mathematical models of the separation distribution curves for the various feed size intervals. The correlation equations for the g50 and Ep as the function of inverse of the feed size, and MF and total throughput were established. A numerical algorithm utilizing the Secant method, based on the root searching principle, was developed for yield optimization and simulation of dense medium drum separation to improve the separation efficiency and hence the product yield. The relationships between the direct ash content and relative density of the particles in feed and the products were established and incorporated into the numerical algorithm for predicting the product quality.
