The National Steel Pellet Company is owned by National Steel Corporation, managed by the M. A. Hanna Company and located near the town of Keewatin in northern Minnesota. Annually, the concentrator processes 15.24-Mt (15.0 million It) crude taconite with eight 8.2-m diameter by 5.5-m long (27 ft x 18 ft) wet semi-autogenous (SAG) mills to produce 4.57-Mt (4.50 million It) of iron ore pellets. To improve operating costs and primary mill grinding circuit efficiencies, a task force on liners was formed with the operation, maintenance and engineering staff at N.S.P.C. along with the local supplier of mill liners. Results of the task force recommendations since 1980 along with improvements made in the primary circuit operations, are presented. Mill Liner Design and Metallurgy Changes The primary mill liner task force was formed in 1977. Its function was to improve the operating costs and milling efficiencies of the ten 8.2-m x 5.5-m (27 ft x 18 ft) wet SAG mills that were operating at the time. The SAG mills are driven by two 3500 HP motors drawing a total of 5450 kW at 76% of critical speed.

The Lime Creek* ore body in northwestern British Columbia is one of the few commercial primary stockwork-type molybdenite deposits in North America. Others include the Climax, Urad-Henderson, Questa, and Endako ore bodies. They are mined on a low grade-high tonnage basis, and are open pit operations except for Climax and Urad-Henderson. Much recent geochemical research on both porphyry copper and stockwork MoS2 deposits has been concerned with dating of micas related to the mineralization and associated igneous rocks. The results appear to show that mineralization and the predominant magmatic events of the deposit are indistinguishable in age (1-5), except where dating has been in sufficient detail to resolve the analytical overlap (6). At Lime Creek, geologic information shows that the Main granodiorite, the major intrusive and dominant host rock for MoS2 mineralization, was emplaced and had solidified sometime prior to the introduction of MoS2. The first MoS2 episode is intimately related to localized bodies of kalialaskite which clearly intrude the older stock. K-Ar dating was undertaken to clarify the age relations between Lime Creek plutonism and the apparently younger hydrothermal event that began with kalialaskite.

The commissioning of a Distributed Digital Control. System for the grinding circuit at Cuajone, was completed by mid August, 1985. Development of a successful strategy, excellent operator acceptability and the visual aspects offered by the display of the central console, improved mill throughput significantly. The inherent features of a digital system enhanced the flexibility in grinding control and allowed the mills and classifiers to be operated at maximum capacity. This paper discusses in detail the strategy development, the production restrictions encountered, and evaluates the overall performance of the digital control system. 1.0 Introduction In November 1976, the Cuajone Concentrator, located on the western slope of the Andes in Southern Peru, was commissioned to treat a nominal 41,000 TPD of ore. A systematic elimination of production restrictions has resulted in a continual increase of concentrator throughput to 48,700 TPD before the grinding control was in- stalled.

In subterranean mining operations, access to communication networks deep underground is critical for transporting data, voice and video, and other supporting applications that are essential for efficient and safe operations. Whether accessing sophisticated ERP or maintenance management systems, engaging in fleet management, video surveillance, or access control, or protecting miners with wireless locator systems, these networks serve as a literal lifeline between workers deep within mines and surface operations. For this, mining networks require more than permanently installed network cabling, it also requires unique deployable systems designed for quick installation, extension and even relocation as the active mine site area moves, or equipment is moved in and out.

Hydraulic transport is commonly used in mining for moving particles or ore concentrates in pipes over long distances with a water stream. Control and monitoring of this process require sensor technology that can obtain relevant characteristics of the two-phase flow. This work investigates the acoustic emission (AE) technology for monitoring a hydraulic system with different sand concentrations, showing the strong relationship between friction behavior in the pipe and the measured AE signals.

INTRODUCTION Ambient concentrations of radon and its daughter products have been measured and analyzed by a number of investigators for a variety of purposes. Principal among these purposes have been: (1) descriptive, to characterize the distribution and changes in concentrations under various conditions; (2) research in the use of radon as a tracer gas in the study of atmospheric characteristics and motions, such as eddy mass transfer, diffusivity profiles, large scale circulations, and the like; and (3) the use of radon as an atmospheric tracer in exploration for uranium deposits.* This information forms the basic data for this paper and for its placing the ambient natural, or non-anthropogenic, radon concentrations into the perspective of ambient radon health standards and lung cancer risk calculations. To enable better understanding of some aspects of the ambient radon data, review and analysis is also performed on selected measurements of radon emanation or flux from the surface of the earth into the atmosphere. These measurements have generally been made for purposes similar to those for ambient radon, i.e., (1) description of radon emanation characteristics; or (2) to support and justify the use of ambient concentration measurements in atmospheric research; or (3) in exploration for uranium. Interest is also developing in the use of such measurements for earthquake prediction. In addition, to complete the perspective, brief examination is given to anthropogenic ambient and flux radon measurements related to the mining and milling of uranium, so that comparison can he made with the values from natural sources. As a frame of reference we cite here previous summaries of studies which have presented representative values and ranges of ambient concentrations and emanation rates. H. Israel, in the Compendium of Meterorology (1951), cites eight studies of ambient radon concentrations which we have selected as representative of non-anomalous continental values. Their means generally range from [0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1 with the smallest reported minimum of zero and the largest maximum 0.53 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.10 with a standard deviation of 0.03 pCi lit-1. Means over oceans are much smaller, and the data scarcer, with only three values ranging from 0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1 and a mean of 0.0016 pCi lit-1.] Thirteen studies from Israel's list were selected as representative of mountainous terrain. These data, except for the cases of higher elevations, frequently show significantly higher values than the average cases in non-mountainous terrain described-above. The averages range from 0.10 to 0.59 pCi lit-l; the smallest minimum is zero and the largest maximum is 9.2 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.30 with a standard deviation of 0.17 pCi lit-1. Israel also cites five studies of radon emanation (flux) from the earth's surface. These show a mean of 0.40 pCi-2m-2 sec-1 and a range of from 0.21 to 0.74 pCi m-2 sec-1. Data on flux are naturally scarcer in the literature than data on ambient concentrations, because of the greater interest in and utility of the ambient information. In this paper we also give special consideration to observations of the variability in time and space of radon flux rates, and to the impact of these phenomena on the use of such data for a variety of purposes. NATURAL(NON-ANTHROPOGENIC)AMBIENT RADON CONCENTRATIONS We have examined the following reports for the data selected for this category; these studies were generally intended to describe radon characteristics in the atmosphere. Jonassen and Wilkening (1970); Bradley and Pearson (1970); Wilkening (1970); Lambert, et al (1970); Pearson and Moses (1966); and DickPeddie, et al (1974). Another set of studies which was reviewed was selected because the investigators made ambient radon measurements in the course of examining the use of radon as a tracer in atmospheric research. This set consists of: Israel and Horbert (1970); Carlson and Prospero (1972); Subramanian, et al (1977); Larson (1978); Cohen, et al (1972); Hosler (1966); and Shaffer and Cohen (1972). Finally, unpublished data from uranium exploration activities (Milly and Thayer, 1976) was analyzed. [Treating the ocean cases first, the mean values are generally consistent with those quoted earlier from Israel (0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1); they range from 0.001 to 0.011 pCi lit-1, with 0.003 the most frequently reported value. Continental values, from eight studies, range in means from 0.07 to 0.41 pCi lit-1 (not including mineralized areas, or "uranium country", discussed later), with maxima as high as 2.4 pCi lit -l. For comparison, the means from Israel are 0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1, with a maximum of 0.53 pCi lit-1. INTRODUCTION The $1.1 billion Bajo la Alumbrera Project, started up in 1997 by Minera Alumbrera Limited in the Catamarca Province of Northwestern Argentina, is the first large scale modern mining project to be developed in Argentina. Like many modern Andean mining projects, existing infrastructure was not available to economically transport the 875,000 tonnes of product per year. A variety of alternatives were investigated, including upgrading of existing roads and railroads, slurry pipelines, and combinations of these systems. The final system selected was to combine a 312 km slurry pipeline with an 820 km rail haul to a ship loading facility near Rosario. The concentrate pipeline crosses divergent terrain between the minesite at 2400 m elevation and the filter plant at 400 m elevation. The system selected represented the lowest net present cost alternative by a significant margin. BACKGROUND The Bajo Alumbrera deposit was discovered in 1947 by Professor Cetioni from the University of Tucuman. It is a large (>750 million tonnes) medium-grade (0.6%) copper deposit with high gold values (0.5 g/t*). The deposit outcrops, making it very suitable to modern, large scale, open pit mining techniques using 218 t trucks and 43 m3 shovels. Advances in gravity concentration of the gold helped to demonstrate the feasibility of the project in a study prepared by Fluor Daniel for Minera Alumbrera in 1994. The initial concentrator is the largest green-field concentrator ever constructed, rated at 85,000 t/d. Production will peak at 190,000 tonnes of copper metal and 710,000 troy ounces of gold per year, one of the top 10 copper and top 15 gold producers in the world. * Throughout this paper, the word tonne and abbreviation refer to the metric ton of 1000 kg.

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity', innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

On April 3, 1981, Harrison Western Corporation was awarded a contract by Amax Alloy - A Division of Amax Inc., to sink the Henderson #5 ventilation shaft. The project was located on the Henderson Mine site 88 kilometers west of Denver near the town of Empire, Colorado (Figure I). The Henderson No. 5 Shaft, located in an Alpine environment at an elevation of 3145 meters, was a 9.8 meter diameter concrete lined shaft with a total depth of 793 meters. Work started and continued with Harrison Western employees until January 15, 1982. At that time, Amax made the decision to continue the shaft-sinking with their own labor, and with Harrison Western providing supervision under a management service contract. Shaft sinking continued under this arrangement to October 1, 1982, at which time Amax put the Henderson No. 5 project on standby status until further notice.

Low-density cellular concrete (LDCC) was first introduced to the market in the early 1900s and since then has made continuous technological advances. There are two primary types of LDCC: permeable and non-permeable. Both types of cellular concrete offer advantages in different types of geotechnical engineering applications. Because of its unique characteristics of low density, high compressive strength, and high fluidity during placement, LDCC offers an effective solution for a wide variety of engineering applications, and in many cases provides a more cost-effective, labor saving alternative to traditional fill materials. This paper will review the history, characteristics, and technological advances of LDCC, highlighting multiple real-world case studies that showcase the high-performance capabilities of both permeable and non-permeable LDCC.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is the fourth panel cave mine in the East Ertsberg Skarn System, (EESS) which lies 500 m below the producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and up to 1,700 m below the surface. The interaction between the DMLZ and DOZ is occurring as the DMLZ cave grows vertically toward the DOZ footprint. During this process, a rapid change in the global mine system stress is anticipated. This change is forecasted to drive substantial changes in the magnitude and direction of principal stresses in the DMLZ and DOZ mines at PT Freeport Indonesia. These changes will bring the mine system closer to the ultimate capacity of the excavations and can result in significant impacts to mine stability if not managed. Critical to this management, is understanding cave growth and locations, as well as how these changes will impact stress conditions.

The first wagon trail across Loveland Pass was built in 1869 thus starting the struggle between the Colorado Rockies and interstate travel. The 1st Pioneer Bore underneath Loveland Pass at the Continental Divide in Colorado was attempted between 1941 and 1943 and was abandoned due to ground conditions at the Loveland Fault. Construction on the nearby Eisenhower Tunnel began in 1967 and was completed in 1973. Numerous challenges associated with tunneling, including at 11,000 ft were overcome. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the history of investigation and construction challenges associated with the Eisenhower Tunnel to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

In the past 100 years in the mining industry, many references are made to the "Widow Makers", 'Miners Con" and many other derogatory names related to physical hazards. They reflect the lack of understanding of the problem facing the early day miner. Workers were enticed, in some cases, to take a chance against a medical question mark that could not be explained by the doctors of those early days. The optimism of the mining man and the challenge of work led him to believe that the physical results could not apply to himself and only applied to some of his fellow workers. Much of the time, to his dismay, he found that he had lost to the game of chance. As medical knowledge improved and mining management began to understand the effects of conditions in the mines and beneficiation plants, steps were taken to alleviate or eliminate the health hazards that were present, The organizations engaged in mining that did not take an active interest in employee health found themselves to eventually be placed in the position of being forced to take action by Federal and State legislation. We find ourselves in the 1970's on the threshold of a new era where the general public is concerned vociferously about "their" environment and the industry feels the governmental controls more strongly than ever before. It can be said that in the past 100 years we have advanced from the "Widow Makers" of the 1870's to the "Retirement Makers" of today. The difficulties of the early days in underground mining were of times compounded in the beneficiation plants above ground. As late as the 1950's some crushing and milling installations in the United States were operating under environmental conditions that complied to the then existing legislation but were below the health level sought by conscientious management. The Mission Concentrator Crushing Plant was designed in 1959 and placed in operation in July, 1961. The Carson Hill mine in Calaveras County, California, was explored and developed by Grandview Resources Inc., as an open-pit heap-leached operation, with production commencing in the fall of 1986. Grandview entered the district in 1983 after a 40-year period of quiescense, the initial contact being by Barden Stevenot, V.F. Hollister, and J.J. Crowhurst. The last dividend declared by the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corp. was 3 1/2$ per share paid in January 1943. The mine was originally discovered in August 1848 by Jim Carson. Preceding the entry by Grandview in 1983, Cyprus Mines explored Carson Hill in 1975, and drill exposed a mineral inventory of 7.3 Mt (7,982,000 tons) averaging 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz per ton) gold. From that time until the Grandview entry, R.W. Thomssen and B.E. Stevenot continued investigations into the potential of the deposit. Grandview successfully investigated many of the metallurgical problems involved with heap leaching the ore. Metallurgical investigations were con- cluded under the direction of R.S. Shoemaker. By November 1984, J.A.C. Ross had prepared a prefeasibility report that included the earliest Grandview investigations. This report concluded that the deposit contained at least 6.8 Mt (7,440,000 tons) of ore that average 1.5 g/t (0.045 oz per ton) gold and that this ore could be mined with a 2: 1 stripping ratio. A final feasibility report was prepared by D.W. Pringle in September 1985. It showed a final ore reserve of 14.7 Mt (16,160,000 tons) of 1.7 g/t (0.049 oz per ton) gold. Attached is a description of the geology of the deposit from an internal report covering Cyprus activity in 1975 and a brief portion of USBM IC 6940 (1937). Manganese (Mn) ferroalloys are chiefly consumed in the steelmaking process as a deoxidizing agent or as an alloying element to produce high-quality steels. These alloys are typically produced in a submerged arc furnace using coke, fluxes and manganese ores of a specific manganese/Fe (Mn/Fe) ratio. Preferred-grade manganese ores should have Mn content greater than 46 percent and Mn/Fe content greater than 5 to produce commercial-grade, high-carbon ferromanganese [1]. Selective mining of high-grade Mn resources has created a scarcity of these resources, which is emerging as a major challenge for the manganese and steel industry. Manganese ore resources are mainly distributed in South Africa, with about 32 percent; Ukraine, with about 17 percent; Australia, with about 17 percent; and Brazil, India, China, Gabon and Mexico, with lesser amounts.

"Standing support is often used in conjunction with underground retreat mining. Knowledge of the load-displacement behavior of standing support and loading induced by the mine opening is critical to proper support selection. The NIOSH STOP database contains load-displacement laboratory test data for most commonly used standing supports. Hydraulic load cells currently used to measure in-situ loading of standing supports have exhibited leakage under load, producing irregularities within the dataset. An improved hydraulic load cell eliminates leakage and produces more consistent data.INTRODUCTIONA hydraulic load cell, more commonly known as a flat jack or JackPack, is a device installed to determine the loading characteristics of the roof-to-floor supports. These standing or roof-to-floor supports include, but are not limited to pumpable cribs, cans, wooden cribs (4-point, 9-point, etc.), metal props, wood timbers, concrete donut cribs, and other variations of these standing supports.Flat jack devices have been used previously to determine the loading of such roof to floor supports. The most commonly used load cell for standing supports is based on a design intended for pre-stressing standing supports, not load measurement. Preloading helps to keep the supports, such as timbers props and cribs, in place during the dynamic loading associated with blasting (Barczak and Tadolini, 2004).Flat Jacks are manufactured in various shapes and sizes depending on the application; common shapes are square and round that are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) thick when collapsed, as shown in Figure 1. These load cells are produced in South Africa and can be formed into several different shapes depending on the application (Barczak, 2003). The sheet metal that makes up the bladder is comprised of 19-gauge or 1.11 mm (0.04 inch) thickness; the top and bottom pieces of sheet metal are resistance-seam welded around the perimeter. There are two different ports installed on one of the bladder skin corners of the flat jacks; these ports allow fluid to fill the unit, and the other port has a relief valve. The fill port is comprised of a check valve. The pressure relief valve is located in the second port; preset to 1,724 kPa (250 psi), the pressure relief valve keeps the load cell from bursting. Bursting of these load cells typically causes a small tear in the metal skin allowing the fluid to leak out without a large catastrophic failure.The effective inflation range of these load cells is between 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) to 254.0 mm (10.0 inches) thick. Different types of fluids can inflate these load cells but the most common and easily accessible fluid for testing applications is water. Water pressure from the mine supply line can inflate these load cells to the desired load. Depending on the pre-stressing requirements, a pneumatic powered pump, hydraulic pump, or hand pump may be required to inflate the load cells."

The world’s climate today has changed compared to 10 or 20 years ago. Many countries face water shortages; water sourcing for mining activities has become harder to secure. ESG’s focus on the industry has made us more aware of the need to preserve and responsibly use the water needed for wet processing in our milling and sorting activities. In a recent greenfield project in South Australia, 10 Gigalitres per annum would be required to process 5Mtpa of magnetite [1]. Published information indicates that the mining industry consumes approximately 12 EJ per year—or 3.5% of total global final energy consumption globally [2] or 3.33 trillion kilowatt hrs. This energy consumption is significant, considering the critical role mining plays in extracting and processing essential minerals for economic development and human progress. The perception of the mining industry is that not only does it consume significant power, but it also consumes a lot of the freshwater in the world. In fact, it consumes approximately 5% [3] of the total freshwater demand. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), by 2050, 60% of the world’s population will be living in countries that are classed as water-stressed [3]. As more and more emphasis is placed on renewable energy sources, the amount of water used in mineral processing will increase because more and more raw materials require a water-intensive process. This increases the pressure on the mining industry to try and find water-saving initiatives. As part of this review, recent advancements in magnets have enabled magnetite processing facilities to achieve between 30 to 40% dry gangue material rejection before the wet beneficiation process (grinding and sorting). This reduction in energy consumption allows the reduction of energy consumption. Secondly, there is less material ground in the mills, which requires less water for mineral downstream processing.

In underground coal mining, the specification and control of belt and bunker capacities are complicated by (1) stochastic and intermittent conveyor loading, (2) a limited ability to reduce surge at the mine face, and (3) occasional overlapping of loading from two or more mine faces on the conveyors. Recently, because of longwall mining and other factors, the capacity requirements of most mine conveying systems have risen substantially; as a result, efficient capacity design and control have become important mine planning issues. This paper reviews these design issues and their associated modeling procedures. Design considerations and modeling difficulties are also examined.

One concern of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is the structural integrity of steel wire ropes used on mine personnel hoists and elevators. Failure of such ropes has resulted in loss of life and property. Although thorough and regular visual examinations are performed, hoist ropes may still fail from undetected internal wear, corrosion, and broken wires. To complement visual examinations, nondestructive rope inspection techniques have been developed to determine deterioration and removal criteria. The techniques use electromagnetic and permanent-magnet test instruments designed by a Canadian firm. This paper describes the operating principles, field and laboratory testing of these nondestructive testing instruments, and discusses the feasibility of using this type of testing as a supplement to visual examination and destructive tests.
