In uranium mines, the median size of the aerosol has been found to be about 0.1 micron or less. Such small aerosols are readily deposited or "plated-out" on dosimeter interior surfaces resulting in the recording of a low dose. The "plate-out" properties of the CEA alpha dosimeter head are described with respect to aerosol properties in controlled experiments in the laboratory. A simple model is derived to estimate the amount of "plate-out" in the CEA head.

A new fluid bed lime calcining plant is converting high quality limestone into quicklime at the Cape Lime facility in Vredendal, South Africa. The plant was supplied by Metso Minerals. Cape Lime, established in 1946, operates two limestone and dolomite mines in South Africa. The high quality Vredendal limestone deposits are suitable for the production of lime for water treatment and for manufacturing precipitated calcium carbonate.

"The static shear stiffness of an immersion joint subjected to combined compression and shear forces is investigated by experiments in a test set-up. To explore the performance of the immersion joint, the compression-shear loads, which are applied on a specimen according to test protocol, are determined based on real design situation. In this test, the main focus is on the steel shear keys and the rubber sealing. For the applied loading schemes, different levels of axial force, corresponding to the water depth of the joint, are considered as well as the changing amplitudes of the shear force. The force-displacement curve is obtained and the hysteresis is observed during the whole test. The joint‘s static shear stiffness is calculated, showing to increase linearly with respect to the magnitude of the axial force. Moreover, it is found that the rubber sealing has a significant influence on the shear behavior of the joint. INTRODUCTION An immersion joint is the connecting part between two adjacent elements of an immersed tunnel. Compared to that of the bulk elements, the stiffness of the immersion joint is relatively small. When it is subjected to shear actions, whether resulting from vertical foundation settlement or horizontal earthquake movements, shear-resistance of the joint is the main concern for a safe and reliable water-proof design. A flexible immersion joint, which normally consists of a rubber seal and shear keys installed at an element end is a common solution in practice. The way in which the shear keys and the rubber seal behave in the joint together is of vital importance to a comprehensive understanding of the shear behavior of the joint. However, in literature very few experiments on the shear behavior of immersed joints are available although the flexible joints are applied in practice for more than 50 years already. O. Kiyomiya (2004) carried out both a 3-dimensional experiment and a finite element analysis for a new type of flexible joint referred to as the Crown Seal. The results indicated that this new type of joint can be applied in practice because of the effective reduction of lateral deformation. A linear model was found in the paper of Anastasopoulos et al. (2007) to describe the behavior of the shear keys, which consider that the stiffness of the shear keys tends to infinity. R.S. van Oorsouw (2008) discussed the shear capacity of concrete shear keys in segmental joints, by analyzing the influences of reinforcement and friction force between shear keys."

This paper describes a method to improve coal mine entry intersection design. The method considers the effect of in situ stresses, local geologic conditions, rock physical properties, and mining sequence. Development of the method is discussed, including the results of field instrumentation studies and numerical modeling investigations. Data required to evaluate the effects of roof span, mining sequence, entry orientation, and bolting patterns on intersection stability are also presented. Ground control studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in two underground mines in the Illinois Coal Basin have shown that in situ horizontal stresses and roof geology have a critical effect on intersection stability. Methods to reduce the adverse effects of these parameters are emphasized. Typical failure behavior associated with specific geologic and horizontal stress conditions is' presented to illustrate proposed control methods to alleviate adverse ground conditions.

The Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) is developing cover technology for uranium mill tailings that will inhibit the diffusion of radon to the atmosphere. As part of this cover program, an improved radon flux measurement system has been developed. The radon measurement system is a recirculating, pressure-balanced, flow-through system that uses activated carbon at ambient temperatures to collect the radon. With the system, an area of 0.93 m2 is sampled for periods ranging from 1 to 12 h. The activated carbon is removed from the radon trap and the collected radon is determined by counting the 214Bi daughter product. Development of the system included studies to determine the efficiency of activated carbon, relative calibration measurements and field measurements made during 1980 at the inactive tailings pile in Grand Junction, Colorado. Results of these studies are presented.

Geochemical static tests are a basic component of geochemical assessments and predictions for acidic drainage, and include acid-base accounting and total-metal contents. A key database for such information is the International Static Database (ISD), which currently contains more than 45,000 static-test analyses from over 200 minesites. Such large databases are useful in identifying general trends and, just as important, the percentage of exceptions. General trends and significant exceptions can be seen in the ISD by comparing one parameter against another. This paper shows that bulk neutralization potential (bulk NP) obtained from acid titration is often a good indicator of neutralizing capacity above values of 10 t CaCO3/1000 t. Other types of calculated neutralizing capacity are then compared to bulk NP to determine if they, in fact, reliably represent actual neutralizing capacity and if they can substitute for the more time-consuming and expensive bulk NP. For example, bulk NP correlates better with Carbonate NP (from carbonate analyses) and Total-carbon NP (from total-carbon analyses) than with (Ca+Mg) CaNP (from solid-phase analyses of calcium and magnesium). This means that, in general, (Ca+Mg) CaNP is a less accurate substitute for bulk NP than the other types, and thus requires intensive site-specific justification if a substitution is attempted. This also means that measurement of the frequently less-expensive parameters of total carbon and carbonate can often substitute, within site-specific error bars, for the bulk-NP titration. However, the ISD also shows that non-carbonate minerals make the primary contribution to neutralization in up to 20% of samples, so Carbonate CaNP and Total-carbon CaNP do not always reveal the full neutralizing capacity of a sample.

The issue of miner safety in case of an underground mine fire has been extensively examined by both government and industry. These efforts have intensified in recent years following a number of fatal fires at underground coal mines. As a result, there is an increasing interest in the reliability of coal mine escapeways during a mine fire. This paper discusses the use of fault tree analysis for evaluating escapeway reliability. A fault tree is developed using standard logic formulations. It is later evaluated using commercially available software. The computer model uses Boolean reduction to obtain the minimal cut sets and minimal path sets of the tree. A brief analysis is also conducted to determine the occurrence probability of the TOP event. This study shows that fault tree analysis is a viable means of analyzing escapeway reliability. The cut and path sets reveal those event sequences leading to fatalities. Such information is useful in safety training and accident prevention. The probability of the TOP event shows the frequency of occurrence for fatalities in an underground mine fire. The usefulness of this value, however, is limited by the accuracy of the data for the initiating events. For mining events, the data is difficult to estimate precisely.

The iron and steel industry continues to operate at depressed production levels due to the low level of demand for steel and foundry products. Crude steel production in the Western world dropped by 13.7% from 459.3 Gt (506 billion st) in 1981 to 396.4 Gt (437 billion st). The reduction was particularly severe in North America where the industry suffered a loss of 37.3% from 123.6 to 77.5 Gt (136 to 85 billion st). This reduced level of production severely affected iron ore and agglomerates output. Substantial curtailment was made in both sintering and pelletizing plants to meet reduced demand. The pressure on these plant operators shifted from quantity to quality. With energy cost becoming an ever increasing part of production costs, conservation was a major area of emphasis. Iron Making Sinter has continued to be the favored burden for blast furnaces overseas. As hot metal production declined and excess sintering capacity developed, many of the overseas operators that have been using pellets found it advantageous on hot metal production cost to increase the ratio of sinter at the expense of pellets. This was the case despite the depressed price level of pellets in the world market. In North America where pellets have been the predominant burden material-mainly because it is necessary to pelletize the fine grain iron ores available domestically-there was also increased interest in sinter usage. Bethlehem Steel Corporation's 13.6-m (44.5-ft) furnace at Sparrows Point experimented with a burden with more than 70% of sinter during the second half of the year and indicated some favorable results as compared to its previous 50% super flux sinter and 50% acid pellet burden. The blast furnace operators continued to press for improved burden quality. In addition to the emphasis on the importance of burden chemistry and quality, uniformity, much emphasis was placed on improving reducibilitiy and high temperature metallurgical qualities. These burden properties were recognized to hold further promise in reducing fuels rates. Sintering With reduced consumption caused by the cutback in hot metal production, many sinter plants sat idle while others operated at greatly reduced rates. The deemphasis on production in many plants allowed them to experiment with various means to reduce operating costs. The most notable action was the introduction of low cost South American pellet feed fines into the sinter ore mix. These feed fines, which are finer than 150 µm (100 mesh) ore, were previously thought to be too fine for sintering. However, when the full production rate is not required the use of up to 40% in the ore mix was reported to be successful with the aid of burnt lime and adequate premixing and granulation of the sinter mix before sintering. The emphasis on quality and tighter cost control also has resulted in a further breakthrough in sintering technology. It was recognized that good feed preparation-including selection of compatible ores, good blending, good pseudo-particle formation, additive size control increased bed depth, and closed control of the sintering bed heat pattern-could allow the production of high quality sinters with much lower heat input and FeO level. Bed depth of more than 600 mm (23.6 in.) was practiced in a number of operations. Total heat input of better than 1.3 GJ/t (290,300 kcal per st) has been achieved. The present study has investigated the bioleachability of low-grade and high-grade pyritic gold ores and the extraction of gold from the leach residues of bioleaching with thiourea solutions. Final gold extractions as high as 96% were obtained from the high-grade ore and above 93% from the low-grade ore. The gold extraction was found to follow the extent of pyrite biooxidation. Using a cyclic voltammetric technique and carbon-paste-FeS2 electrode it was found that the semiconductor pyrite oxidation involves many intermediate electrochemical reactions. Furthermore, the oxidation is solid-state diffusion controlled as suggested by chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric measurements.Using Sand's approach, the activation energy of solid-state diffusion biooxidation of pyrite was determined to be AEa=22.4 kJ. A generalized model for the mechanisms of pyrite oxidation has been presented.

It has been approximately four years since the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reclassified crystalline silica as a "group one" substance. Since then, crystalline silica has been considered a human carcinogen. Silicosis is a preventable disease, and several aggressive campaigns have been developed to increase awareness of silica-dust-related problems in the industrial environment. New analytical techniques are now being developed to determine quantitatively the amount of crystalline silica in materials. Yet, still much is to be learned about the surface properties of silica and the way in which the disease progresses into full-blown silicosis. This paper discusses the interaction of free radicals generated by the mineral particles and lung tissue. It is the cell injury and DNA damage that progresses to fibrogenesis. Freshly fractured surfaces of silica contain free radicals. These free radicals play an important role in the stimulation of the alveolar macrophage and the development of the inflammatory reactions leading to the fibrotic response caused by silica. Engineers, scientists and physicians need to discuss the mineralogy of silica and the technical issues concerning the development of silicosis.

Sedimentary rock fractures commonly occur in the vicinity of outcrops. Mine highwalls and highway cuts provide excellent views of these near-surface joint systems. This paper explains the origin, characterization, distribution and extent of the these joint systems with reference to the lithologic composition of the rocks. The practical implications of these joint systems on the operation of a mine are described. Included are discussions of the discontinuous deformation that results from surface subsidence, the stability of mine portals and near-outcrop underground operations, and the stability of highwalls when using highwall miners and strip operations. Some design procedures are recommended to minimize the problems encountered within mining areas having intense joint systems.

Advanced remote sensing can be a powerful new information tool to help private and public entities make better environmental and resource management decisions. However, some regulated entities are reluctant to develop or use this tool because of their concerns that it will lead to increased risks and costs of environmental legal liability. They fear that new ways of monitoring the environment will increase liability, undermine existing enforcement agreements, reopen compliance agreements, and generally provide a competitive disadvantage to early adopters by accelerating environmental cleanup costs. Others counter that the increased risks are marginal, and that several advantages outweigh these risks, including the opportunity to more effectively manage environmental operations, target and set priorities, measure and track management and compliance effectiveness, provide more defensible environmental assessments and baseline conditions, make and defend optimal siting decisions, and avoid or resolve environmental disputes. This paper offers strategic advice on ways regulated entities can enjoy the benefits of these powerful new information tools while mitigating down-side legal and compliance risks as much as possible.

Previous efforts to remove and concentrate heavy-metal ions from wastewater streams via metalloprotein affinity metal chromatography (MAMC) were limited to the metal transport protein transferrin. Extension of the technique to the enzymes carbonic anhydrase and carboxypeptidase A, which possess different metal affinity properties, is described. Preliminary results indicate that the technique is capable of selectively removing and separating late first-row transition metal ions from aqueous solution. The results suggest that by properly choosing the matrix, i.e., protein or enzyme, MAMC may he applicable to problems involving a wide range of heavy-metal-hearing aqueous solutions.

INTRODUCTION Since the first introduction of explosives into mining operations, safety considerations have prohibited the use of machinery in association with the explosives. Only within the last 25 years has this situation changed appre¬ciably; the closest thing to "machinery" used by a powderman in the "old days" was his wooden tamping stick. With the blackpowder and dynamite used during the first 150 or so years of mining blasts, substituting a drill steel or a metal "spoon" invited serious disaster. With the advent of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives (1950s) and water-gel explosives (1970s) for underground blasting, machinery started to play a large part in blasting procedures. The lower sensitivity of ANFO and water gels allows these prod¬ucts to be loaded in a variety of safe ways. Not only has this meant cost savings in labor and blasting materials, but it has also resulted in whole new mining concepts where the limitations of dynamite previously made those concepts uneconomical, impossible, or excessively risky. Increasingly (totally for some mines), the traditional tamping stick has given way to a variety of pneumatic machines for loading explosives and blasting agents. The resulting blasting operations have become safer, more efficient, less uncomfortable for personnel, and a major step forward in mining technology. ANFO LOADING EQUIPMENT Three basic types of loaders are used for ANFO explosives, these being the pressure-vessel loaders, Venturi loaders, and combination loaders. Pressure-Vessel ANFO Loaders ANFO consists of prilled ammonium nitrate (porous pellets I to 2 mm in diam) and fuel oil in the appro¬priate 94 to 6% blend. The material is fairly dry, pourable, and easily conveyed by an air stream. One device or system for handling (hole loading) ANFO is the pressure-vessel loader. ANFO is dumped into the vessel or "pot," and the vessel then is pres¬surized. The ANFO is conveyed out of the bottom of the vessel into a semiconductive hose that has been inserted into the blasthole. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical pressure-vessel loader in use. Applications: The use of pressure-vessel loaders is widespread in room-and-pillar mines, including salt, potash, trona, lead, and other rubber-tired mines where the heavy pressure vessels can be mounted on a vehicle for transport from face to face. The vessel often is large enough to hold eight or more 23-kg (50-1b) bags of ANFO, so several faces can be loaded before refilling.
