South Africa is amongst the 40 driest counties in the world, with extreme weather conditions and beset by both droughts and floods. Coupled with economic growth is an increased demand on water resources and, as with all other industrial developments, mining requires large volumes of water, which is likely to have an impact on the environment. Further to this, the mining industry also realizes that minerals are a non-renewable resource and the contribution to wealth creation from mineral extraction is not everlasting. It serves as an economic boost and careful planning is required to ensure that the legacy of mining is sustainable, and that some of the returns from mining provide continual economic and social prosperity.

Slurry pipelines have proven to be an economical method of mineral concentrate transport over long distances. Some of these pipelines are internally lined with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) to avoid internal corrosion. HDPE is an inert and extremely smooth material, and it was believed hat scale deposits would not form on it. However, there have been instances of scaling on HDPE lined pipes. Scale problems have also occurred on bare steel pipes. In this paper experience with scale problems in some of these pipelines will be summarized. Alternatives available for control of scale problems will be discussed, and a success story for the control of scale problems in the 300 km long Century zinc and lead slurry pipeline will be presented.

The equilibrium between carbon-saturated Fe-Cr-Si-C alloys and SiO2-CaO-MgO-A2O3-CrO2-FeOy slags was studied under atmospheres of argon and carbon monoxide at temperatures of 1500 and 1600°C. The equilibrium distribution of chromium, silicon, and iron between the slag and the metal phases was determined for different compositions of both phases under different atmospheres and temperatures. It is shown that silicon transfer from the slag to the metal increases with increasing temperature, decreasing carbon monoxide partial pressure, decreasing carbon content of the metal, increasing chromium-to-iron ratio of the metal, increasing silica content of the slag, and decreasing lime-to-alumina ratio of the slag. Some activity calculations were made for the experiments conducted at 1600OC in a carbon monoxide atmosphere. It is also shown that a decrease in the iron content and an increase in the slag basicity decrease the chromium content of the slag. A major proportion of the chromium present in the slag was found to be in the divalent state under the highly reducing conditions prevailing in the experiments. The chromous capacities of these slags were calculated and were found to decrease with increasing basicity.

"I have been involved in the refractory industry for many years and at some time or another I have designed materials, tested materials, manufactured materials, installed materials, in fact I have done everything except actually chemically analyzed a refractory material.So I would not even begin to tell you how to analyse a refractory material. I'm sure everyone here knows more about chemical analysis than I do.However you could regard me as a customer with and perhaps the insights I have developed may help in putting the role of chemical analysis in the Refractories into perspective.For a start, let's take a step back and ask why we test refractories. The refractories handbook of the American Foundry Association gives four reasons:1. To determine appropriate specification.2. For quality control, to ensure conformance to specifications.3. To provide special property information not available elsewhere.4. For postmortem analysis to determine property changes in service and provideinformation that can point the way to better service.I want to discuss these points with regard to the role of chemical analysis and in particular the abuse of in house chemical analysis facilities. This paper considers the introduction of large-scale longwall mining into South African coal mining, instead of the conventional mechanized bord-and-plllar mining that is widely practised at present. The two methods are compared, and longwall mining is found to have the advantage in several respects in some seams. The most cogent reasons for the introduction of the longwall method In some seams are associated with safety strata control and increased labour costs.

Platinoids in the Witwatersrand system C. A. Cousins. (visitor) Study of the composition, nature and mode of occurrence of platinoid minerals in the conglomerates of the Witwatersrand System leads to some interesting conclusions. Genetic evidence strongly favours a placer origin, while comparison with modern alluvial platinoids supports this view but also indicates that they are very mature alluvials. The compositional patterns and distribution of the platinoids in the Witwatersrand basin suggest the water was saline. Study of the mineralogy was greatly facilitated by the electron-probe.

The selectivity of ion-exchange sites varies with the matrix of the polymer, the nature of the site. and the method of application. The effect of these variables on the recovery of uranium is examined. with particular attention to vinyl pyridine and to symmetrical and asymmetrical quaternary ammonium sites. The effect, on the loading. of high concentrations of chlorides in the liquors is discussed. and other components of the liquors that may cause fouling of the resin are also considered. The discussion is supported by the results of tests conducted on various types of resins. The economics of the process is discussed briefly.

Objective justification on economic grounds for expenditure aimed at improving the quality of the underground working environment requires a suitable measure of any improvement in productivity that would result under routine working conditions. For this purpose, a composite production criterion is suggested, as well as its correlation under actual operating conditions with various factors directly affecting productivity and the environment. Of the environmental factors, wet-bulb temperature appears to be the major factor affecting productivity. The production data given indicate that a decrease in the wet-bulb temperature of 1OC can be expected to result, on average, in some 3 to 4 per cent increase in productivity; in the higher temperature ranges, this percentage could be much higher.

A flowsheet incorporating rotary-drum filtration for the solid-liquid separation step, followed by solvent extraction for uranium purification, is used as a standard against which four flowsheets are compared. These flowsheets employ either counter current decantation or belt filtration for solid-liquid separation, and either solvent extraction or continuous ion exchange plus solvent extraction for the purification step. Sales revenue, taxation, capital expenditure, and operating costs are estimated. These factors are taken into account in the calculation of an incremental net present value for each circuit by the discounting of cash flows at 25 per cent per year over a projected life of 15 years. For the material used in these examples, the highest net present value results from the circuit that employs belt filtration followed by continuous ion exchange and solvent extraction.

The case for national research in mineral processing PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS given by R. E. Robinson*, Ph.D., B.Sc. (Eng.) (Wits.) Some of you have only raised your eyebrows, some have made tactful comments, and a few of you have been fairly outspoken, but all of you in industry are concerned at the high level of State expenditure by bodies such as the National Institute for Metallurgy. The case for a national research organization in mineral processing is not clear-cut and in fairness I must present both cases - for and against. This paper is concerned with heat flow in the plane of a typical cross-section of a deep underground airway. A new algorithm, called the quasi-steady method, is presented for the calculation of rock temperatures in that plane. The algorithm is used in the computation of heat and moisture transfer rates from the rock to the ventilating air for an airway that is wet on part of its circumference and dry elsewhere. The speed and accuracy of the new method are demonstrated on a microcomputer, and it is argued that this method offers a considerably more versatile and physically meaningful alternative to previous methods for the prediction of increases in air temperature along mine airways. The algorithm is also used to explore the concept of a uniformly wet airway that is equivalent to a partly wet airway in terms of its effect on the ventilating air. The concept is shown to be reasonable, but more complex than one might have anticipated. Finally, several useful extensions and applications of the new method are suggested.

A review of real-time particle size analysers A. L. HINDE,. B.Sc., A.R.C.S., D.I.C., Ph.D. The physical principles of different sizing techniques are critically examined in order to evaluate the suitability of the techniques for real-time particle size assessment. Examples of both successful and unsuccessful attempts at producing an acceptable real-time sizer are described in order to delineate the difficulties involved in making rapid and accurate size measurements. Only two of the examples described have proved to be suitable for on-line particle size monitoring, namely the "MintekjRSM Onstream Slurry Sizer" manufactured by Cartner Group, Ltd., and the "PSM System 100" made by Autometrics Co. Both these commercial systems are capable of assessing particle size with an accuracy comparable with that obtained by routine sieving and weighing. The "PSM System 100" has been used successfully for automatic control of grinding circuits. Economic benefits derived from this system, operating under rigorous plant conditions for several months, have proved that real-time size analysers are of significant value to the mining and metallurgical industry.

Lonmin Platinum installed a concentrated mode dual-alkali scrubber at the smelter in Marikana in 2002. The dual-alkali scrubber was the technology of choice at that time as a sulphur fixation plant, due to the perceived benefits of handling both the high SO2 concentrations of converter off-gas and the swings in SO2 concentration that are linked to Peirce-Smith operation. Owing to current and impending legislative requirements for air quality and waste, Lonmin is currently considering additions to the dual-alkali plant, but is also evaluating alternative technologies for sulphur fixation. This paper reviews the decision of Lonmin to install a concentrated mode dual-alkali scrubber and presents plant performance achieved. It also describes the important control variables and sensitivities of the plant, and the final product that is produced by the operation of the plant. The legislative requirement that drives the Lonmin technology evaluation is also discussed.

The mining-induced effects around narrow tabular stopes have traditionally been evaluated in terms of elastic continuum analyses. An understanding of the phenomenological behaviour of the rock surrounding deep-level gold mines has accordingly been developed on the basis of such analyses. However, elastic analyses do not afford reliable representations of the behaviour of rock in which failure may occur on discontinuities. This paper describes investigations that show how the stress and stiffness characteristics of a rockmass are affected under such circumstances for representative ranges of values for the relevant parameters (depth, span, support stiffness, field stress ratio, and discontinuity strength). These investigations afford a substantially different understanding of the mechanical behaviour of rock that is subject to failure. Instead of forming an arch across the abutments, the rock in the hangingwall bears directly across the stope onto the footwall and, instead of being subjected to tension, the nether hangingwall is clamped in compression in the horizontal direction.

The concepts involved in flotation research are discussed and aims are presented. Three different methods of investigation can be used, all of which are applied at the National Institute for Metallurgy (N.I.M.), and these are the empirical, trial and error method, the chemical engineering method, and the physicochemical approaches. This paper is devoted to the last of these. Because of the complexity of the physicochemical interactions involved, the work has, to a large extent, been concentrated on only one aspect, viz. the interaction between the mineral surface and reagents in solution, which was considered of major importance in the understanding of the process. The aspects on which work has been done are the concentration of uranium, the reaction between salt minerals and fatty acids, mixed xanthate-cationic collector systems, and the reaction between sulphide minerals and thiol reagents. Selected problems from the first two of these are discussed in some detail and deal with the agglomeration flotation of uranium and the chemical control of the flotation process for phoscorite. A detailed discussion is also presented of the progress made in the understanding of the interaction between sulphide minerals and thiol reagents, which is of more general application. Finally, an indication is given of the future direction of physicochemical research at the N.I.M.
