The ability to conduct real-time material tracking in mines has been a long-standing challenge. Technological innovations such as radio frequency identification technology (RFID) have over the years contributed to the effective tracking of material flow and reporting of metal content. This paper outlines the laboratory procedures and results from testing the suitability of microdot technology as a viable technique for real-time material tracking in mining. The paper clarifies the reasons for conducting the test and presents the material safety data sheet (MSDS) from a South African and Canadian perspective. Microdots from three aerosol systems were immersed in water, heated to 100°C, and crushed into coarse and fine material. These tests were used to ascertain if the technology could withstand mining conditions. A strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis was used to evaluate and compare microdot technology with RFID. It was shown that microdot technology has some potential to track ore parcels because data integrity was retained after exposure to post-blast mining conditions. However, more improvement is required to digitally detect microdots before the technology can be implemented at scale in the mining industry.

The nature of the coal and of the roof in No. 3 seam at Coal brook Collieries is such as to preclude the use, during bord and pillar mining, of conventional mining equipment that employs cutting and blasting in its production cycle. Continuous mining machines of the borer type, operating within a mining height range of 1,9-2,3 m, have been successfully employed in No. 3 seam since 1957.The experience gained with this type of equipment, the operational methods adopted, and the results achieved are described. The ventilation method used to eliminate the dust and methane hazards created by this type of equipment is stressed. The limitation on the minimum mining height that can be obtained with the borers in use has lead to the recent introduction of a Rotary Drum type of continuous mining machine. This equipment is capable of operating in areas where the seam width decreases to 1,5m. The production potential of the machine has been proved. The roof conditions created by the cutting action of the Rotary Drum type of miner are not considered satisfactory and a modified drum head profile is to be tried.

Since 1925, xanthates have been widely used in sulfide flotation due to their low cost, ease of manufacture, and ability to float most value species. However, the industry's increasing need for safer and more selective alternatives, driven by low head grades, poor-quality, difficult-to-process ore with complex mineralogy, and stricter environmental regulations, has led to the development of Solvay's AERO® XR series of collectors. These custom-formulated products are based on greener chemistries and offer metallurgical benefits that are similar to or better than those of xanthates, without the safety concerns. Developed through Solvay's Flotation Matrix (FM) 100 approach, the XR series collectors are suitable for a wide range of applications, including the processing of Cu, Zn, and Cu-Ni, as well as the flotation of precious metals. This paper will highlight the differences between xanthates and XR series collectors, and present case studies of their successful commercial application at various global operations.

Contributions to discussion V. E. Marting (Associate Member): The authors of this paper should be congratulated in having pioneered the application of the Sharapov predictor to local data, and in having made a valuable contribution to South African experience in the quantitative treatment of geological information using a digital computer. Although the existing set of three programmes has been described as a 'suite' it does not represent an integrated system in the accepted sense since the communication between runs is made in the form of punched card files to enable the mining engineer to exercise discretion and control over the data entered at each phase. Although the authors are justifiably proud of the successful results obtained through the application of this method, I feel that it is my duty to comment that the computer aspect of the work has not reached full development and is deserving of the financial support needed to increase its widest usefulness. At the present moment a routine to detect 'missing information' has not been commissioned. Due to the lack of documentation the use of the programmes is restricted since the format for the submission of data is known only to the authors. It is very unlikely that a profitable return on the development costs will be enjoyed before the programme is fully documented and made available to wider use. My criticism of the present incomplete state of the work is being voiced purely with the intent of focussing on the significance of this project and the fact that it is deserving of development on an industry basis. It should be noted that at the economical cost of R4.00 per sq ft of computer print-out, a mining engineer can hardly afford to miss the opportunity of using the programmes on other (e.g. metalliferous) mineral deposits of tabular formation. Since the publication of this paper I have had an opportunity to see the results of the programmes developed by Drs M. D. G. Salamon and F. Deist for designing bord and pillar workings. The basic data for these latter programmes are extracted from iso-line plans drawn conventionally by geologists, a task that could be considerably expedited through the use of Mr Hawkins' programmes. It appears that the efforts of these respective teams are complementary and it is in the interests of the industry that these individual components should eventually form part of an integrated system. Margo* (Member): This paper is a good example of how and where the backroom scientist-in this case the mathematical statistician-can aid the mining engineer to develop not only more accurate means for dealing with valuation problems but to develop a tool that can also cope with changed geological specifications.

This paper reports on what appears to be the first discovery of prehistoric mica-schist mining in southern 4frica. The mine concerned was found in a location very rich in rock art that is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Kalahari. The authors conclude that the oval pieces of mica schist that were found at the mine site were used by Khoisan peoples to scrape fatty tissue from hides that were to be cured. Radiocarbon datings seem to indicate that such ovals were used for at least 20 000 years.

One of the most critical and complicated steps in mine design is a suitable mining method selection based upon geological, geotechnical, geographical and economical parameters. Since there are many factors involved in mining method selection, the decision-making process is very difficult. In this paper, the Analytical Hierarchy Process, with 13 criteria, is used to develop a suitable mining method for the Golbini No. 8 deposit in Jajarm (Iran). Six alternatives (conventional cut and fill, mechanized cut and fill, shrinkage stoping, sublevel stoping, bench mining, and stull stoping) are evaluated. The studies show that the suitable mining method for this deposit in the present situation is the conventional cut and fill method.

In the mining method used at O'Okiep Copper Company (OCC), vertical crater retreat, the prime requirement for the fill is that it should be sufficiently strong to be free-standing to a height of 150 m. Other requirements are minimal decant and drainage water, and high pulp density to allow large tonnages to be placed quickly and alleviate transport problems. The excessively high cost of cement precluded the use of a cement-based fill, and after three years of extensive investigations a backfill based on the smelter slag was produced. Currently a fill with a uniaxial compressive strength of greater than 1 000 kPa after one month is being produced. This is in excess of the design specification of 850 kPa after 2 - 3 months. The research and development which went into the slagfill is briefly covered; the production of the fill from the various raw materials is described; and the design and control systems of the backfill plant, the reticulation system and its monitoring are examined. Finally, the implications of this high- quality fill for the mining programme are assessed.

Successful prediction of the collection efficiency of cyclone separators is a necessary step in cyclone design and verification. Aside from standard empirical relations, CFD modelling is widely adopted to supplement the design of cyclone units in relation to the desired separation performance. Nevertheless, effective adoption of numerical modelling is sometimes prevented by large modelling errors, especially for small size particles which are more subject to turbulence effects than larger particle classes. In the past, this motivated the adoption of more refined turbulence modelling approaches, such as large-eddy simulations. These approaches provide greater insight into time dependent behaviour, while leading to larger computational cost with respect to more standard approaches. In this paper, an effective Eulerian-Lagrangian Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach is investigated, which is able to predict the complete separation efficiency curve with satisfactory accuracy, without requiring prohibitively long computational times. An assessment of the proposed approach is carried out against experimental data from large laboratory scale cyclones, in the form of mean and fluctuating velocity profiles from LDA measurements (Hoekstra, 2000), as well as with respect to the experimental separation curve (Zhao, 2005). The final application to a full-scale industrial cyclone unit is then carried out with the aim of tuning the cyclone design to the separation efficiency curve as required by downstream processes. Identifying the exact borders of geological domains and assessing the uncertainty of these borders are crucial steps in resource estimation. This potential field method was designed to build 3D geological models from data available in geology and mineral exploration, namely the geological map and a digital terrain model, structural data, borehole data, and the geologist’s interpretations. The resource evaluation of a copper ore deposit is often performed in three steps: (i) delimitation of the boundaries of the units corresponding to the various geological formations or ore types; (ii) estimating densities; and (iii) estimation of grades within each unit. In simple cases (e.g., a series of sub-horizontal layers), the geometric model can be built using 2D geostatistical techniques (kriging or co-kriging of the elevations or thicknesses of the various horizons) which also quantify the uncertainty of the model. A 3D model of Cu grade is generated using ordinary kriging; however, the indicator kriging method is run to design a 3D model of rock types by incorporating the drilling results. Block models of geophysical and geological characteristics are included in a similar 3D mesh to investigate their relationships in copper mineralisation.

The existence of an impressive reserve of oxidized cobalt-copper bearing ores in the African copper belt area lead the GECAMINES (DRC) to develop specific and adapted mineral processing routes (Mulaba-Bafubiandi, 2001). During the conventional diluted sulphuric acid leaching of oxidized cobalt-copper bearing ores commonly referred to as ?heterogenite?, more than 10% cobalt dissolution yield increase was observed in a plant situation (Mwema et al., 2002) when SO2(g) was flushed into the acidified cobalt leaching solution. The present paper attempts to elucidate mechanisms involved which lead to the increase of total cobalt as SO2 is flushed during the leaching of oxidized cobalt bearing minerals. The kinetics of cobalt dissolution as SO2 is flushed into the acidic solution as well as a full characterization, using UV-Visible spectroscopy, of Co2+ and Co3+ species present in the collected leachate are presented while possible effects of the presence of Cu and Fe on the leachability of cobalt bearing minerals present in the oxidised ore will be discussed. In the view of speeding up the leaching process, the mixed cobalt-copper oxidised ores were microwaves pre-processed. Preliminary results were also discussed.

Architects, the Association of S.A. Quantity Surveyors, and the National Building Research Institute of the CSIR exists to finance fully or wholly visits by eminent authorities from overseas to South Africa for the purposes of seminars, informed discussions, consultation, and possible active participation in scientific, technological, and development projects of importance to the building industry.

Lifelong development of skills and knowledge of mining professionals has been recognised worldwide as a challenge for the development of a sustainable mining sector. Practical training and learning over the mine value chain are among the key components of this knowledge building. However, the number of available mining sites for continuous education in real-life conditions is limited; also the specifications for practical training are not clearly defined. The project MINETRAIN was developed to (i) evaluate the potential of the shortly-closing Pyhäsalmi Mine, in Finland, as an educational and training underground facility, and thus, prolong the utility of the existing modern mine site, and to (ii) develop and test practical training programs for mining and mining industry related professionals. Pyhäsalmi facilities enable training among all disciplines related to the overall mine value chain and hence, the project has potential in providing education for sustainable management of any phase of mining operations. The philosophy underpinning the MINETRAIN approach to mining activities is to assist the clients in minimising the technical and financial risks by providing a competitive and skilled personnel asset while optimising the value drivers in their operations. As a first major step of the project, a pilot training course, involving basic-level online theory and hands-on training at the Pyhäsalmi mine site, was undertaken in summer 2019. Feedback from the pilot test group of mining professionals has proved to be very positive. The comments from the participants strongly emphasised the added value of the practical onsite training for improved understanding in the large scale picture of mining on the entire value chain. As a second phase of the project, a new test course was launched in June 2020. The second MINETRAIN course focuses on new technologies and digitisation in mining. Contribution by G. Narsimhan It was with much pleasure that I went through D.F. Malan's excellent paper. The following explanatory and critical note has been the result of my deep study of the paper. Although by qualifications and experience I have been a chemical engineer, involved over four decades with problems in the modeling and simulation of transport-limited (heat and mass) chemical reactions in multi-phase systems, I have of and on interested myself in challenging problems in extractive metallurgy. This is the first time I have veered of to continuum mechanics, at the age of 71! Author's reply. I thank Professor Narsimhan for his extensive contribution to the paper. It provided me with the stimulus to derive an extended model. However, there are some inaccuracies in his arguments that need further discussion. Professor Narsimhan's main concern is that there is not a good enough fit between the derived viscoelastic Kelvin model and the experimental data supplied by Güler1 (see Figure l1 on page 218 of my paper). I will therefore explain the choice of a viscoelastic model in more detail and also make specific comments on the arguments given in his contribution.

(Visitors) In sulphide flotation processes, there are two mechanisms by which particles are transferred from the flotation pulp to the concentrate: adhesion to air bubbles and natural flotation, and entrainment in the froth. The entrainment mechanism is particularly important for particles of non-sulphide gangue, which do not absorb collector. The importance of controlling the recovery rate of water was illustrated in plant testwork in which selectivity between valuable sulphides and sulphide gangue, and between valuable sulphides and non-sulphide gangue, was altered by manipulation of variables affecting the water recovery rate. The two mechanisms should be recognized in the development of a control system. Most of the control schemes in operating plants have concentrated on reagent additions, which affect the natural flotation mechanism. Although control of the chemical environment is clearly of paramount importance in flotation, plant tests have shown that control of the variables affecting the entrainment mechanism is also important.

Over a period of three years, since samples first became available, laboratory and pilot plant experiments have been conducted to develop a method of treatment to recover copper and zinc in saleable grades of concentrates from the Prieska complex sulphide orebody. These experiments have been based on adaptations of principles investigated by research workers and applied to similar ore types throughout the world. The differential flotation process finally worked out involves a comparatively coarse grind, flotation of the copper at near-neutral pH with the use of a zinc-cyande sphalerite depressant, followed by flotation of the reactivated sphalerite. This procedure has had such success that the construction of a full-scale plant is proceeding with confidence that the small-scale operations will be duplicated or improved upon. It is to be expected that the large plant will follow the pattern of almost every flotation plant that has been built in that modifications to the circuitry and reagent systems will be made as experience is gained.

The density used to covert volume to tons is critical in determining the real in-situ tonnage of Mineral Resources. However, the methods used to determine density and the use of different technical terms are seen to be inconsistent throughout the industry. Probably the best discussion addressing the determination of density was presented by Lipton (2001). This paper does not try to replicate this excellent work, but rather to review current industry practice and present a comparison of the approach to density in public reporting. Some of the technical terms used in reporting and the common methods applied are also discussed.

High-profile failures of tailings dams illustrate the significant safety challenge they pose. The decant pond of such facilities plays an important role in their mechanical stability. This study investigates the feasibility of using public multispectral data collected by the Sentinel-2 satellite mission to monitor the area of the decant pond. The Sentinel-2 mission has a revisit time of 5 days and the data used herein has a spatial resolution of 10 m/pixel. We considered two water-detection metrics: the normalized difference water index (NDWI) and the near-infrared (NIR) reflectance. Implementation of the method at a South African platinum tailings dam illustrates the capabilities and limitations. Public, sub-metre resolution true-colour imagery served as validation data. There is good agreement between pond area measurements based on Sentinel-2 and the validation imagery. These results suggest the feasibility of using Sentinel-2 data to supplement the monitoring of the decant pond.

There are many underground mining software tools available to plan and schedule the development of underground mines. A shortfall of these tools is the optimization of the underground equipment and strategy in order to maximize the development rate. This paper will illustrate how the SimMine® software was used to maximize underground development at Petra Diamonds' Cullinan Diamond Mine. It will also determine the effect of various development strategies and equipment capacities on the underground development rate and pinpoint potential bottlenecks in the mine development cycle.
