Advanced process and equipment analytics have been around for a while. However, with accessible IT infrastructure and site maturity, it is possible to analyse, monitor, and control processing plants and equipment easily. These various disparate systems provide different reports requiring the involvement of various personnel and attention to different reporting platforms. For efficient harnessing of the systems? capabilities, as well as effective improvement and monitoring of process and equipment, a single point of entry is required. A process and equipment optimization solution was required at a concentrator in South Africa, focussing on the product stream of platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate from the UG2 Reef. The investigation of data to identify strategies for optimization was required to allow visibility into plant operations to guide operators, an easier method to identify process loop problems, identification of imminent equipment failures, and advanced process control to optimize throughput and stability. A collaborative effort between the client and General Electric Intelligent Platforms (GEIP) investigated data-driven solutions to each of the problems. With the focus on process optimization and asset monitoring, as well as equipment monitoring, a combination of approaches was utilized to address the various problem areas that were identified. Each was implemented separately in the control layer of the plant IT infrastructure. The integration was done in a centralized web-based reporting tool that integrated the detailed results from the various solutions. On the process control side, monitoring of control loops was included by calculating performance statistics that were reported daily to identify sub-optimally performing control loops and indicating potential problems. The advanced process control solution for this site includes a surge tank controller, stabilizing flow through the flotation banks, and preventing the surge tank from overflowing or running empty. Equipment monitoring was investigated, for preventative maintenance, by making use of statistical data models to indicate imminent equipment failure. These predicted alarm events included the cause for failure, drilling down, and allowing focus on a specific variable for preventative action. The results included a more stable flow through the mill, with fewer stoppages due to surge tank overflows or running empty. The causes for process drift could be identified and operators could react early. Alarms warning of equipment failure 2½ and 4 months in advance were identified in an offline analysis.

Change management and training initiatives in remote rural settings in Africa are generally difficult to implement successfully due to factors such as varying levels of education, multiple nationalities and languages as well as cultures in one workplace. The challenge has always been the ability to implement change management and training initiatives that will have an impact despite these differences. Essentially this requires that the change and training interventions employed are applicable and should work well with a wide range of individuals sitting in one room ? in practice this can vary from semi-literate workers to engineers with PhDs. In this paper we will share the theory behind behaviour-based change management and training and present a case study that reviews an actual supply chain improvement and sustainability implementation at a Zambian copper mine. The case study explains the results achieved as well as the interventions employed to achieve these results in a multidimensional organizational environment. This paper is relevant to delegates who are faced with implementing changes or training in a similar mining environment. The term geostatistics was introduced by Matheron (1960) to cover the development and application of mathematical and statistical models which take specific account of the spatial structure of a 'regionalised' variable. In ore valuation the relative positions of available ore values within an ore body or portion thereof, can only be ignored in the unlikely case where there is no significant pattern of association or correlation between them - that is, if they do not disclose any significant spatial structure. A structure might not be evident in the available data, e.g. where the spacing of the available values is relatively wide such as in surface drilling on a new deep gold mine. However, practical selective mining considerations could dictate the need for eventual underground valuation on a scale much smaller than that represented by this spacing and the possibility of a significant structure on such a smaller scale cannot then be ignored. Some spatial structure must be present wherever the average variability among the values of check ore samples from the same, adjacent or nearby grooves or of borehole cores from the deflections in the same borehole, is lower than the overall variability for ore values within the whole ore body. Another practical check on the presence of a spatial structure is where it is evident that there is or will be a significant variation in the ore grades for individual ore blocks. Any correlation between peripheral and follow-up internal ore block values also provides evidence of a spatial structure, and hence the regression techniques covered in §1.16-1.2 1 can be accepted as the first application of the geostatistical procedures. The spatial structure of a regionalised variable can be studied and measured by the pattern, usually a decreasing function, in the level of correlation or of the covariance between pairs of values as the distance or lag between the values increases, that is, by the correlogram or covariogram (Krige, 1968, 1969, 1976; and Fig. 18). In geostatistics, for various practical and theoretical reasons (Matheron, 1960, 1971), the measure most commonly used is the semivario- gram, which increases as the lag increases. The semivariogram and covariance values are interrelated and for the lognormal- de Wijsian pattern used extensively for gold ore valuation both measures as well as their relationship can be defined on a fairly straightforward basis. Provided the underlying as- sumptions are realistic, the choice of measure - correlogram, covariogram or semivariogram - will be dictated mainly by convenience. Paragraph 2.2 will cover some general geostatistical terms and $2.3-2.12 will deal mainly with the theoretical side of the lognormal-de Wijsian model for spatial structures. Wherever the relevant variable lends itself to normalisation via the 3-parameter lognormal distribution (see 51.9) the de Wijsian semivariogram model is also likely to be suitable and will provide substantial advantages in application. Various practical applications will be covered in Section 3. Although confined to the lognormal-de Wijsian model, much of the theory covered and the general approach is applicable to all spatial structures. [ ]

Industrial effluent from various industries contains heavy metals that are a serious threat to humans, flora and fauna in water bodies, and the environment. The heavy metals are dumped after precipitation, which has serious environmental consequences. In this paper, a 2D axi-symmetry CFD model has been developed to study the extraction of chromium ion from industrial effluent, in a hollow fibre membrane, using Alamine 336 as the carrier and kerosene as the diluent. The Navier Stokes equation was used to predict the velocity profile of the aqueous and organic phases, and species transport equation, which considers both convective and diffusive mass transfer, was used to predict the concentration profile of the chromium ion in the computational domain. The distribution coefficient was experimentally determined at a pH 4, which was found to be the optimum pH. Numerical simulations were performed considering 11.11 mol/m3 of initial feed concentration for chromium ions and extractant concentration of 0.2 M. ?Rare earths ?will not be bargaining instruments?? was stated in a headline in China Daily of 29 October 2010. The Chinese government is trying to fend off the persistent accusations from Japan, the USA, and Europe that it is manipulating the supply of these so called ?critical? metals to gain political and economic advantages. The critics maintain that China has taken the rest of the world hostage by controlling 97% of the resources of rare earths. These elements are crucial in a number of high-tech applications. They are not impossible to substitute, but difficult to do so effectively. The name ?rare earth? is a misnomer, as even the least abundant is 200 times more common in the Earth?s crust than gold. They are, however, difficult to find in economic concentrations. The Chinese near-monopoly over the rare earths, together with China?s scramble for other resources in Australia, Africa, and elsewhere around the world, is seen as an example of a Chinese strategy to take control of vital metal resources. The Chinese are also accused of using unfair and sometimes illegal business practices in this fight for resources. Practices which, critics claim, put the Chinese interests above the interests of the host countries, in particular in Africa.

Multiphase microstructures in steel have been intensively studied in the past years, but combining non-equilibrium phases still offers a great potential for further development of these steel grades. Thus, improved combinations of mechanical properties can be obtained with microstructures formed by bainite or martensite, in combination with retained austenite. In particular, microstructures on the basis of carbon-depleted martensite and retained austenite can be produced by the very promising production process named quenching and partitioning (Q&P). Originally, the Q&P process aimed to avoid the formation of bainite during the heat treatment. However, the process does provide the possibility for (carbide-free) bainite formation during the partitioning step, i.e. in the presence of martensite. This article evaluates this approach, considering thatthe formation of bainite from austenite is strongly influenced by the preceding formation of martensite. Although the accelerating effect of the presence of martensite during bainite formation has been observed, it is not yet fully understood, and experimental and theoretical studies are being performed in order to come to a more effective exploitation of these processes for the formation of multiphase microstructures.

This study investigated the corrosion rates of various steel types and coatings used for friction rock stabilisers in a deep-level gold mine under diverse underground environmental conditions. Testing was conducted in situ within ramps, intake airways, and exhaust airways, and through simulated laboratory experiments. Results revealed that environmental variations significantly influence the corrosion performance of different materials and coatings. Duplex coatings, made up of galvanised steel with an organic paint layer, demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance. Zinc-based coatings provided moderate protection, while 3CR12 stainless steel and uncoated S420 carbon steel exhibited comparatively poor resistance under both aqueous and atmospheric conditions.

After the milling and flotation of the platinum bearing ore, the flotation concentrate is electrically smelted in 6-in-line electric arc furnaces and the resulting furnace matte treated in Peirce Smith converters to remove the iron. The iron-free (less than 1% Fe) converter matte is granulated and sent to the base metals and precious metals refineries for further processing. During the smelting and converting processes two distinct gas-strength gas streams are produced: ?The Peirce Smith converter off-gas contains 4%?9% SO2which is treated in a conventional sulphuric acid plant to produce 94% H2SO4. ?The electric furnace off-gas contains 0.9% SO2which was (until September 2002) vented through a 91- metre high stack to atmosphere. In October 2002 Impala Platinum commissioned a SULFACID® plant at its smelter in Rustenburg, which recovers the SO2from the electric furnace off-gasses into a weak sulphuric acid solution. The SULFACID® technology utilizes wet activated carbon to oxidize the SO2toSO3. The SO3reacts with the water on the catalyst and is washed off the catalyst bed as a sulphuric acid solution with up to 13 wt. H2SO4. The plant operates at 60ºC and at atmospheric pressure. The SULFACID® technology is widely used in the pigment industry. This is, however, the first application of the technology on electric furnace off-gas. Underground mines require electricity to operate both the main surface fans and auxiliary systems, with primary ventilation systems typically accounting for approximately 40–60% of the mine’s overall electricity consumption. The primary reason for this considerable expense is that most underground ventilation systems are designed for peak demand, regardless of the actual demand, which is commonly dictated by diesel equipment usage in trackless mining operations. Most platinum mines on the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe tend to operate their ventilation systems at this peak level, despite the mine’s air quantity being well in excess of the ‘true’ ventilation needs. This is due to a lack of appropriate ventilation controls. The authors designed and installed a ventilation-on-demand system at one of the bord and pillar platinum mines to minimize the use of redundant air in underground operations. Fourth industrial revolution techniques were applied to the environmental monitoring and tracking systems thereby optimizing air quantity demands. The mine managed to reduce its annual power consumption by 23% through the implementation of manual control and time-of-day scheduling levels of the ventilationon- demand concept. There was also a 6% productivity improvement, mainly attributable to an increased face time as a result of the significant reduction in the re-entry period following a blast. This paper introduces a novel concept of ventilation optimization through digital transformation targeting mainly room and pillar platinum mines. A system was designed, installed, and commissioned, though there is currently an ongoing optimization process to harness the full benefits such as productivity enhancement, reduced power costs, and improved worker health.

The study was intent on assessing the socio-economic impact of a zinc mine in South Africa through the application of people-centric digital tools using a case study research methodology. The global mining industry is undergoing significant technological shifts to modernize, improve operational sustainability, and align with the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) agenda. While the case study mine is a more modernized mine, continuous improvement around the ‘social’ pillar becomes critical, and to this end application of people-centered digital tools presented as the vehicle to understand community needs and impacts. Despite considerable annual corporate social investment by mines annually, the overall impact or social return on investment is marginally understood. Towards contributing to addressing this gap, digital ESG ‘social-related’ data gathering tools for mines decision-making were developed, including the training-needs assessment tool, community-social needs assessment, small, micro, and medium enterprise (SMME) communications and engagement tool, digital leadership competencies gap assessment tool, and change management blueprint, which further allowed for customization to the mining context. Hence, the novelty of this paper relates to applying digital tools to provide real-time information of the needs of a community, both socially and economically. The findings suggested that these digital tools enabled gathering of information for the establishment of regional and operational baselines towards enabling of social investment returns in relation to socio-economic transformation development interventions. These tools have been applied to a zinc mine context, with lessons and experiences obtained through this study, invaluable to the application of these digital tool in other mines in South Africa. The study was conducted in September 2023 across five host communities, surrounding the zinc mine, in the Northern Cape region, with 120 participants involved in the application of three relevant community-related digital tools, which included the training needs, community-social needs, and SMME communications and engagement tools. It was evident that the digital ESG tools could be used for data gathering for the mine’s informed decision-making and allowed for securing of insights on community needs in near real-time, and further proved practical for community use.

Since 2012, Ghana has been implementing local procurement regulations in the mining sector to broaden and deepen linkages between mining and other sectors of the economy. The regulations have been implemented in collaboration with the mining industry. This paper offers an in-depth analysis of how the local procurement regulations and related initiatives have been implemented so far. Primary data gathered with semi-structured interviews and secondary sources of data indicate a steady improvement in both in-country procurement and local manufacturing of inputs for the mining industry. There are, however, some challenges relating to tariff structure and support (financial and technical) for local suppliers and manufacturers to meet high standards and demands of the mining industry. This calls for a well-thought-out strategy and programme of activities to sustain and improve on progress made.

"Matheron's geoslalislical method for the estimation of ore reserves has been developed to the point at which real-life problem may be handled effectively. The steps involved in the method are:(i) obtalning the variogram,(ii) fitting a model, and(iii) producing block estimates.All three steps may cause difficulty, and would-be users need a deep understanding of the theory if failure is to be avoided.To illustrate these points, specific cause are considered:(i) two almost equidimensional porpbyry deposits, one drilled randomly and the other regularly; and(ii) two iron formation, one drilled extensively and being mined, while the other is still at the stage of early estimation."
