A new copper-molybdenum flotation technology developed for a certain coppermolybdenum ore is introduced. We achieved copper-molybdenum bulk flotation in lowalkali conditions. Locked-circuit test results showed that the bulk concentrate contained 21.05% Cu and 1.10% Mo, with copper recovery of 87.37% and molybdenum recovery of 77.07%. For the copper–molybdenum separation process of the bulk concentrate, we use a new depressant, BK511, to replace the traditional sodium hydrosulfide. We achieved copper–molybdenum separation through one rougher, nine cleaner, and two scavenger processes. The results of locked-circuit tests showed that the molybdenum concentrate contained 46.19% Mo and 0.75% Cu, with molybdenum recovery of 93.80%; the copper concentrate contained 21.50% Cu and 0.069% Mo, with copper recovery of 99.92%. This new technology overcomes disadvantages of using large amounts of lime, sodium hydrosulfide, and other reagents in traditional copper–molybdenum flotation.

The productivity indices of the Republic of South Africa compare poorly with those of its competitors in the rest of the world. The theory of productivity is relatively simple, and various models are available to demonstrate this. The problem is how to apply the theory in practice and to convert it into a practical management system that will guarantee results. The secret lies in a management approach that aims at a continuous improvement in achievement and that involves the entire work force down to the lowest level in the process. Good management systems ensuring the necessary attention to, among others, management by objectives, finance, personnel, maintenance, planning, and control are a prerequisite for continued improvement and staff involvement. The net result of such an approach is described by the term performance management, which encompasses the total integration of al a company's management systems.

In this study, potassium ferrocyanide, a non-toxic cyanide precursor in dark and diffuse reflection environments, was applied as a reagent for the leaching of gold. The free cyanide ions were gradually released from the potassium ferrocyanide solution under the ultraviolet light. Orthogonal leaching experiments were performed in gold ore to analyse the effect of solution pH, potassium ferrocyanide dosage, and temperature in potassium ferrocyanide solution system under UV light. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to explore the role of potassium ferrocyanide in gold leaching, Optimised results showed that the gold recovery reached 67.74% in a high-alkaline environment at a 12.6 pH, 3.8 kg/t potassium ferrocyanide dosage, 62°C, and irradiance of 10mW/cm-2. The gold leaching kinetics was monitored by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) of potassium ferrocyanide solution. The results indicate that the gold extraction process consists of two processes: adsorption and leaching, and a rigid adsorption layer formed on the reaction surface. Furthermore, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the gold sensor surface after leaching reaction showed that -C≡N appears on the gold sensor surface, and the gold is oxidised to form AuCN complexes. Hydrocyclones are widely used in wet mineral classification applications and can be notoriously prone to wear. The methods currently used for quantifying hydrocyclone wear profiles are mostly twodimensional. In this paper it was attempted to quantify and monitor wear in three-dimensions, using a micro-CT scanner (Nikon XTH 225 ST). Hydrocyclone wear and, more specifically, spigot wear was investigated on a Multotec HC250 (Dc 250 mm, barrel diameter) hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone is lined by a vulcanised natural rubber compound within a metal shell, with a thermosetting polyurethane spigot and vortex finder. Tests were conducted on the hydrocyclone in a pilot-scale recirculating test setup. The wear rate of the spigot was quantified by measuring the volume change within the spigot over 122 days in operation, using the micro-CT scanner. After 122 days in operation (recirculating feed materials) the wear in the hydrocyclone led to only a 13.67% loss of spigot volume. The relatively low wear rate could be related to the fact that material recirculation led to particle smoothing and a reduction in size, thereby decreasing the wear rate. This also shows the enormous influence that particle shape and size have on wear. The research was conducted with the support of Multotec, NECSA and the University of Pretoria. Discussions on reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction (RPEEE) include the CRIRSCO 2019 reporting template, JORC 2012, SAMREC 2016, CIM 2019 Guideline, and Regulation SK-1300. These reporting codes all conform to the principles of reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. To demonstrate that all mineral resources align with the RPEEE principles, the Competent Person is responsible for endorsing the mineral resource estimate. Moreover, establishing mineral resources and RPEEE requires technical input from numerous technical specialists, such as mining and geotechnical engineers, metallurgical engineers, social and environmental specialists, financial and governmental practitioners, and more. The aim is to improve the transparency of the disclosure of mineral resources and guarantee the investor or potential investor that the reporting of mineral resources is based on reliable technical, economic, environmental, social, and other relevant factors. This paper discusses the important protocols and definitions in some international reporting codes for the purposes of developing a guide memoire that will assist the Competent Person to interpret, establish and apply RPEEE appropriately and easily.

Computer control of flotation at the Ecstall concentrator By M. P. AMSDEN, C. CHAPMAN, and M. G. READING Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different types of ore are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was automated further by the addition of computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery by 1,1 per cent, zinc recovery by 1,4 per cent, and have reduced reagent costs by 16 per cent. Although not expected, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved slightly as well.

The spontaneous combustion of coal and the explosion of coal dust are two phenomena that were identified by the South African mining industry as requiring investigation. Research contracts were awarded to the G.P. Badenhorst Research Facility of the CSIR and the Department of Mining Engineering of the university of the Witwatersrand by the now defunct National Energy Council. Both projects entailed tests on numerous coal samples in specially designed apparatus. Since the completion of the project, attempts have been made to predict experimental results without incurring the cost of performing experiments. This paper describes predictive indices, based on routine laboratory tests, that were developed by the different research teams for their particular projects. A comparison of the results obtained by applying the spontaneous combustion liability index and the explosibility index to common coal samples indicates that, in general, propensity to spontaneous combustion and explosibility exhibit an inverse relationship. A brief overview is given of some major South African coal-mine disasters.

"Mineral reserve statements as well as optimizing mine planning require a block model with grades for each mining block. A cut-off grade is determined by considering the mining costs as well as the expected revenue for each block. These grades are estimated using various techniques, but in reality there is uncertainty in the grade values. These uncertainties result in two types of error. A type I error is where material is classified as ore and mined, but the true value is below the cut-off grade and the material is therefore waste. This material constitutes dilution. The type II error is where material is estimated to be below the cut-off grade and is classified as waste, whereas the true grade is actually above the cut-off grade. This material is not mined and the value is lost.This research considers the value of the lost ore and the costs of dilution under various degrees of uncertainty. Simulation using @Risk and mixed integer linear programing (Excel Solver) is used in a financial optimizer model to maximize either profit or net present value. This is applied to four Witwatersrand tabular gold deposits to investigate the impact of block grade uncertainty on cut-off grades.When optimizing for profit, value may be added by adjusting the cutoff grade slightly downwards. When optimizing for NPV, value may be added by lowering the cut-off grade significantly for the lower discounting rates. At higher discount rates, the lowering of the cut-off grades should be reduced, and in some cases an increase in cut-off grade may be required. Each mine reacted differently to the optimization and thus there is no single rule that can be applied across all tabular Witwatersrand gold deposits."

"The localized uniform conditioning (LUC) technique was proposed by Marat Abzalov in 2006. The technique converts conventional uniform conditioning (UC) grade-tonnage curves into single grade values attached to each smallest mining unit (SMU). This is achieved by ranking the SMUs within a panel in increasing order of their grade (based on the direct kriging of SMUs). This ranking is then used to localize the conventional UC grade-tonnage curves for each panel by dividing them into classes and computing their mean grades, which are assigned to the SMUs. The quality of this localization process will depend heavily on the validity of the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs. Abzalov noted that where the distribution of data available for the direct kriging of the SMU is characterized by strong short-range variability, the advantages of using the LUC approach may be more limited. Consequently, a study was undertaken to determine how valid the predicted grade patterns of a typical Birimian-style gold deposit (with high nugget effect and strong short-range variability) might be expected to be. This was determined by comparing the direct SMU kriging ranking (based on sparse data) with the grade control model ranking (based on close-spaced data and the best available estimate of the deposit). The results showed a satisfactory correlation between these rankings and it was concluded that, although the grade patterns predicted by the direct kriging of the SMUs may be less meaningful for deposits exhibiting strong short-range continuity, there is nevertheless a convincing relationship with the actual (or best available) rankings. Therefore, the LUC technique is still considered to be useful for this style of deposit. Mining projects are capital-intensive and are also characterized by high technical and economic risks. These factors pose challenges to mining entrepreneurs when they seek to raise seed capital for mining start-ups. There are limited sources of mining investment funds in South Africa and each has shortcomings due to one reason or another. Another impediment is South Africa?s status as a developing economy, in which the standards of living ? which in turn influences the savings culture ? the limited GDPs and budget, the socio-political environment, and banking, mining, treasury and other regulations, determine the size of investments, particularly in mining ventures. The proposed funding mechanism was developed with the aim of filling the gaps identified in existing funding mechanisms that were developed by the government with the introduction of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), 2002. The shortcomings identified were presented to the study participants as questions to obtain views that were used to define innovative ways of raising mining start-up capital. Most participants in the study supported the derived hypotheses and proposals, and these were used to refine the proposed mechanism for mining investment in South Africa. The proposed funding framework is aimed at encouraging interaction between mining entrepreneurs, government, and the investors to align goals and expectations when undertaking a mining investment.

"SynopsisThe combustion and co-combustion behaviour of macadamia nut shell, high-ash coal, and anthracite, along with their blends was studied using thermogravimetry. The reactivities of all samples were analysed in air, oxygen, and CO2 atmospheres and at different heating rates from 10 to 40°C/min. Macadamia shell was found to have a lower ash content, 0.36%, than coal with 27.49% ash. The calorific values were similar, 19.64 MJ/kg and 19.44 MJ/kg respectively. The differential thermogravimetric results indicate that as the heating rates increase the ignition, peak, and burnout temperatures increase significantly, leading to high combustion rates. The interaction between the fuels was evaluated using the weighted average model, and the results indicated that there is more synergetic interaction between 20% macadamia plus 80% coal under oxygen than in air and CO2 atmospheres. The results of the investigation provide the combustion and co-combustion characteristics of various samples and their blends and indicate their combustion compatibilities. IntroductionThe global macadamia nut industry is developing at a very rapid rate. South Africa is currently the world’s third largest producer, with a production of about 35 000 t as of 2012 (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 2013), compared to 840 t produced in 1996. The greatest numbers of the macadamia nut farms in South Africa can be found in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, with Mpumalanga as the largest producing area. There are many factors influencing the increased demand for macadamia nuts, the most important factor perhaps being their nutritional value (California Dried Fruit and Nuts, 2011; MPC, 2014) and their suitability as a feedstock for manufacturing cosmetics, bakery products, nut paste, chocolates, sauces, and ice-cream. As a fuel, macadamia shell has a high heating value ‘as-fired’ of about 20.71 MJ/kg (Vhathvarothai et al., 2013), which could in turn be used in drying the nust, and the shell could also be milled and applied as a fertilizer."

After the presentation of the paper (published in the March Journal) the Vice-President said: "This paper is a very important addition to the considerable volume of work applications on this subject of pneumoconiosis. The disease, in all its various forms, has received attention from many, many great men, both in the medical world, and engineers. The fact that there is this big volume of publications of literature on it still doesn't mean that we can get anywhere beyond the old, simple injunction, that the prevention of pneumoconiosis does not depend on compensation, levies or anything else. It simply depends on allaying dust as quickly as possible. "This paper, however, is another scientific landmark and I think, in a cold and dispassionate way, it sets out some important points in this whole subject of the relationship of the levy - the money of compensation to the dust which causes it. "I have, personally, very little to criticise in this paper but when I listened to Dr du Toit's final conclusions, I wondered whether the words, 'Within the data available', aren't the key to this whole situation. I agree that he has demonstrated a workable relationship between the current industries for levy and dustiness, but among the factors which he lists as being important, I know that there is one which is missing. This is extremely difficult to evaluate. It's a factor which has destroyed, on so many occasions, the work which has been done by so many genuine, intent, honest people working in this field, and this is this unknown factor, this hidden factor of political opportunism, which has so often played a very important part in pneumoconiosis compensation. "How many of us have seen the grubby, grasping fingers of power-mad demagogues, and I can name them for you - but I won't - and also the blatant vote-catching of certain politicians interfering in this field. How, at the end of all that, the poor scientist, the poor dedicated man in the Mines' Department, who has to write the law of compensation, can operate, I do not know. "From this picture the ordinary layman recoils in horror. Among the casualties in this particular war, which has been fought over so many years, I am perfectly certain, are some of the criteria of certification, especially in '56/,57, when that extraordinary condition, known as 'pulmonary disability' was introduced. A stepwise arrangement of flotation cells is the most common layout of a flotation circuit in the mineral processing industry. In such a design, slurry flows from upstream to downstream by means of gravity, and the middling products are returned to previous stages by pumps. This paper will introduce an alternative solution in which the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cells are adopted so that all the flotation cells can be placed on the same horizontal platform and no pumps will be needed for middling product transferring. The technology of the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cell will be described in detail, including unique features, the working principle and the related fundamental problems. The comparison of capital investment, operating cost and metallurgical performance will be made between the conventional stepwise arrangement and the samelevel arrangement technology based on industrial practice. "As part of the planning system at each division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, the Mine Planning Department is required to produce a detailed production schedule for each shaft.Because of the difficulties in producing a schedule which satisfies all the mining constraints, and because of the large clerical effort involved, the full range of possible schedules can never be considered.It has been found possible to produce a schedule using linear programming which satisfies the majority of the many varied mining constraints. Computer programs have been written to enable the mine planning department to use this mathematical system without assistance.The system has a large degree of flexibility to enable the planner to include conditions which cannot be incorporated readily in the linear program. This system permits the more efficient production and evaluation of schedules and reduces the amount of clerical effort."

AngloGold Ashanti?s Obuasi Mine, in Ashanti Province, Ghana, operates a plant utilizing bacterial oxidation technology. The mineralization consists predominately of arsenopyrite with gold associated in the sulphides. The plant was commissioned in 1994, at that time was the largest BIOX® plant in the world, and has been operated by AngloGold Ashanti since 2004. The constraints identified in the plantwere the flotation capacity, BIOX® feed size and disruptions to the BIOX® process. This paper focuses on the practical steps that were followed in order to increase the recovery of the plant. The original plant design was based on a head grade of 10 g/t and an overall recovery of 86.5%. In 2007 the plant was operating at an overall recovery of 79.2% at a head grade of 5.6 g/t and this has improved to 80.6% at a head grade of 5.8 g/t during the last quarter of 2008. Additional improvement to 81.5% are expected by the end of April 2009. Improvements that have been implemented include: ?Replacement of the regrind mill ?Installation of additional float capacity ?Installation of a scavenging circuit ?Installation of a complete water treatment plant. In addition we have focused on the effect of the water circuit on the BIOX® process and the steps involved in correcting this problem. The water circuit was originally designed as an open circuit and through environmental considerations the circuit was closed towards the end of 2007. The bacteria in the BIOX® are particularly sensitive to cyanide and cannot tolerate levels above 0.05ppm (free cyanide), this required extensive modifications to the water circuit. The plant improvement project is ongoing and the current scope of work should be complete by the end of April 2009. Further research and development work is being planned, which includes a ?white rot bacteria? that can consume the preg-robbing carbon and oxidize the sulphide in a single pass.

Embankment dams are often constructed on soft rock foundations in Japan, so it is important to precisely predict deformation of the foundations due to fill placement at the design stage. In order to accurately evaluate the settlement and the strain of the rock foundation surface during construction, the influence of the scattering of the deformability of foundations on the deformation behaviour should be investigated. In this paper, a method of evaluating the settlement and the strain of the rock foundation surface during construction was studied with stochastic deformation analysis considering the scattering of the deformability of the dam foundation. Based on the analytical results, a dam foundation design using the deterministic method considering the scattering of its deformability was discussed. Da in Japan Uferdämme of auf weichen Felsfundamenten gebaut werden, ist es wichtig, die Verformung der Fundamente auf Grund der Platzierung der Aufschüttungen bereits in der Planungsphase genau vorherzusagen. Im Zusammenhang mit einer genauen Beurteilung der Senkung sowie der Belastung der Felsfundamentoberfläche während der Bauarbeiten sollte auch der Einfluss der Streuung der Verformbarkeit der Fundamente auf das Verformverhalten untersucht werden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde die Bewertungsmethode zur der Senkung sowie der Belastung der Felsfundamentoberfläche während der Bauarbeiten mit Hilfe von Wahrscheinlichkeitsanalysen der Verformung unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Streuung der Verformbarkeit der Dammfundamente untersucht. An Hand dieser analystischen Ergebnisse wurde das Design der Dammfundamente dann enthusiastisch mittels deterministischer Methoden hinsichtlich der Streuung der Verformbarkeit diskutiert. Comme les barrages en remblai sont souvent construits sur des fondations rocheuses tendres au Japon, il est essentiel de prévoir précisément les déformations des fondations causées par la mise en place du remblayage durant la phase de conception. Afin d’évaluer avec exactitude le tassement et la déformation de la surface du rocher de fondation durant la construction, l’effet de la dispersion de la déformabilité des fondations sur le comportement de déformation doit être étudié. Dans cette étude, l’auteur a étudié la méthode d’évaluation du tassement et de la déformation de la surface du rocher de fondation durant la construction en procédant à une analyse aléatoire/stochastique de la déformation et en prenant en considération la dispersion de la déformation des fondations du barrage. En se basant sur les résultats de l’analyse, la conception des fondations de barrage avec la méthode déterministe considérant la dispersion de sa déformabilité a été activement discutée.

The comminution at grain size level for the liberation of valuable minerals usually requires the highest size-specific energy. Therefore, the full understanding of the comminution process at this level is essential. Models based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) could be a helpful tool for this purpose. In those, the mineral microstructure, which has a dominant influence on the fracture behaviour, can be described in great detail. One major concern, however, is the missing representativeness of simulated models. In this study, a method to overcome this limitation is presented. The authors show how a realistic microstructure can be implemented into a particle bed comminution simulation using a two-dimensional Bonded Particle Model (BPM). The improved algorithm based modelling approach is exemplarily compared to an equivalent real experiment. Thereby, the focus is set on the analysis of the interfacial breakage and the capability of the simulation to reproduce the experimental results. The comparison of the results shows that simulations at grain size level allow a more detailed evaluation of the fracturing behaviour. This is of special interest as the aim of comminution in mineral processing is not only the size reduction of coarse particles, but an efficient liberation of the valuable components. The effect of a sulfite reagent on the floatability of chalcopyrite and enargite was investigated in this paper. The flotation tests using single and mixed minerals were performed under various concentrations of sulfite. The flotation tests using a single mineral showed that the sulfite reagent depressed the natural floatability of both minerals at pH 9. Surprisingly, enargite was floated after the addition of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) following the sulfite treatment, and the floatability of chalcopyrite depressed under a similar condition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results showed that the sulfate species increased after the sulfite treatment on both minerals. However, the addition of PAX removed this sulfate species and rendered the enargite surface hydrophobic. This phenomenon was not observed on the chalcopyrite surface. FTIR analysis and PAX adsorption studies were performed to support this finding. The flotation of a mixed mineral was in agreement with the flotation of a single mineral, indicating a possibility for selective flotation of chalcopyrite and enargite using the proposed method.
