"INTRODUCTION An exposure of large beryl crystals in pegmatite on Beryl Mountain, in Sullivan County, N. H., was the basis for investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the extent of the beryl mineralization and to expose other parts of the same zone that were favorable for additional beryl-rich shoots. Testing by surface cuts, trenching, and tunneling was conducted by the Bureau of Mines from August to December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and economy. The Mining Division, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, does the actual investigative work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Division, O. C. B, Levin was in direct charge of the project.LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITYThe deposit is on the northeast slope of Beryl Mountain, 1 mile south of the village of South Acworth. The village, on State Highways 101 and 123a, is 12 miles northeast of Bellows Falls, Vt. The deposit is reached from South Acworth over a gravel-surfaced road and about 1,000 feet of good truck trail (fig. 1).The nearest railroad siding is at Cold River, on the Boston & Maine Railroad, where there is also a fairly modern, but now idle, feldspar mill."

Underhand cut and fill mining methods are used at the Lucky Friday, Stillwater, and Galena mines in the western US in an effort to safely mine in difficult ground conditions and as a primary mining method where access below the ore is limited. The method has evolved at each mine to meet the unique situations associated with their milling procedure and mine layout. Details of the operational aspects of the backfilling and mining cycles at each mine are presented in this paper, accompanied by a summary of the mechanical properties of the backfill and its in-situ geomechanical behavior.

A portable radon monitoring instrument capable of making on-the-spot measurements of the radon gas content of uranium mine atmospheres was designed and constructed. The monitor was tested in the laboratory and in operating uranium mines. Good correlation was obtained between the monitor readings and radon measurements made on mine atmosphere samples taken in radon bottles.

Eliminate the need for roof bolter operators and their helpers to work under unsupported roof while setting or removing temporary supports before or during the roof bolting cycle-a task that annually accounts for approximately 20 percent of all roof fall fatalities. Approach The Bureau of Mines designed, built, and field tested an auto-mated temporary roof support (ATRS) that can be carried from place to place on the drill head of a single, fixed-head roof bolting machine (squirmer) used in low coal seams (less than 42 inches thick). How It Works The ATRS is designed for installation on any streamlined squirmer. It consists of a ten? foot-long, steel, wide-flange beam supported by two double-acting, telescoping hydraulic cylinders. Approximate equations were used to compute the radiant heating of float coal dust by approaching flames for various combinations of particle size, dust path length (flame travel distance), flame temperature, dust concentration, flame speed, and flame length. The computed values of degree of radiant heating and flame travel distance for preheating the coal dust should be useful for estimating the increased fire hazard of different coal dust-flame parameters. Some findings relating to coal mine disaster control are-- 1. Coal dust clouds cannot be preheated to ignition temperatures by flame radiation alone when deflagration speeds are greater than about 10 m/sec. Thus it appears unlikely that radiation alone will cause flames propagating in dust clouds to accelerate to detonation velocities. 2. Small particles in the radiation flame zone caused by burnout and soot formation increase the degree of preheat significantly. 3. The concentration of float coal dust (radii = 3 to 40 microns) for maximum radiant heating usually peaks in the range 50 to 200 mg/liter of air.

Work in underground coal mines is repetitive and physically demanding. Workers commonly report a wide range of aches and pains. Management at one mine was concerned about increased reporting of aches and pains by roof bolting machine operators. An analysis of roof bolting tasks was conducted at this mine to identify early warning signs of cumulative trauma. Health and safety risk factors were identified and recommendations to reduce cumulative trauma exposure were provided. Recommendations addressed job procedures, equipment design, and worker awareness of risk factors.

Columbium, tantalum, titanium, and zirconium are present in solid waste products generated by the chlorination of rutile used for production of titanium tetrachloride (TiC14). The columbium and tantalum were separated from titanium and zirconium by liquid-liquid extraction techniques using a secondary amine. Salts of these elements are in a leach liquor produced by water leaching of mineral waste from the chlorination of rutile. This waste, produced at the rate of approximately 50,000 tons per year, is about 40 wt pct water soluble. Leach liquors, separated by filtration, were further separated into a solid fraction and a liquid fraction by pressure hydrolysis, The solid fraction containing Cb, Ta, Ti, and Zr was dissolved in HC1-HF and used as a feed solution. Columbium and tantalum were removed from the organic extractant with 1 [N] HC1. A miniature 10-stage reactor showed that the columbium and tantalum present in solution could be separated with a continuous flow.

Reliably measure stress chan¬ges in order to assess stability of mine openings. Approach: A durable, permissible, sensor and readout system have been developed and tested. How It Works: The stress sensing element is a taut steel wire which is, vibrated at its natural frequency, If the tension on the wire is changed because of deformation of the sensor housing, the natural frequency of the wire changes. This effect is similar to decreasing or increasing the pitch of a violin string by loosening or tightening it. Because the stress sensor electrical output is a frequency signal, rather than an amplitude signal, its accuracy is unaffected by the resistance of the signal wire, or other attenuation. Signal wires can be a mile or longer without affecting accuracy. When a button is pushed on the readout box, the sensor wire is electromagnetically excited and vibrates at its natural frequency. That signal causes a readout in illuminated digits. (By referring to calibration chart and the previous reading, the user knows the change in stress.) This system is permissible. To install the sensor, a slightly oversize hole is drilled into the mine pillar. Next, a special tool is used to both position the sensor and wedge it in place. Figure 1, shows the sensor and its integral wedge and hole-fitting piece.

Develop a full-length-anchored roof bolt that is economical, nontoxic, nonflammable, and non-allergenic. Approach Grout roof bolts with a storable mixture of ultra-fast setting inorganic cement and water. How It Works A loose mixture of dry cement powder, and pinhead-size water droplets encased in waxy globules, are pack-aged in sausage shaped cartridges for storage and use. After the cartridge is inserted Into a drilled hole, the roof bolt is thrust In and rotated to mix the cement and water. The cement hardens in seconds, providing usuable anchoring strengths in minutes. Prior to filling of the sausage shaped cartridges, the microcapsules of water are Intimately mixed with the dry cement. The currently used grouting consists of a mixture of one part water (minimum) with three parts alpha-type gypsum cement and a minor amount of accelerator.

"A fundamental study of fragment size distribution and characteristics of fracture pattern is presented for the dynamic penetration of a conical bit into coal block. In this paper, damaged zones during crater formation and fragment size distribution were studied. Bit with a sharper tip angle and a smooth body configuration performed better penetration. Results suggest that in coal cutting the trend should be toward the face cleat direction using a sharper angled tip bits which consumes less energy for an optimum range of penetration depths, thus attaining maximum cutting efficiency and reducing fine fragments.1. INTRODUCTIONMuch research in the past has been done on energy requirements and mechanism of energy dissipation for ideal rock fragmentation in cutting process. However the mechanisms of energy dissipation or failure criteria for rocks in cutting process in order to evaluate the efficiency of energy requirements in specific rock fragmentation is not well understood. The formation of a crater in rock under the impact blow of a bit has been observed experimentally (Hartman, 1959). It is known that directly beneath the edge of the bit the rock is crushed into fine powder, toward the sides of the crater it chips out into relatively large fragments. (Sikarskie & Cheatham, 1973). Singh et al. (1967) investigated the cratering process under the two different conditions of static and dynamic loading. They found that the amount of energy consumed per unit volume of crater is unequal for the two different loading conditions. A complex network of fractures often extends downward and laterally into the rock below the bit. The surface of the specimens showed that the dynamic loading damaged larger area then the static loading."

The Bureau of Mines investigated coal storage silos to determine how gassy coal must be for methane accumulations in a silo to become hazardous and where such accumulations are likely to occur. Methane concentrations were measured in the open space above the stored coal pile, in the pile, and in the reclaiming area. No methane layering was found in closed-top silos. Reclaiming areas were as gassy as the top part of the silos. Coal samples were collected from the conveyors entering the silos in order to assess the gassiness of the coal. No simple correlation was found between the gassiness of the coal stored and the measured methane concentrations. However, at mines where the average 24-hour gas emission from the conveyor belt samples was 14 ft3/ton or more, fans or open tops were used. It appears that a large fraction of the methane released during storage remains in the void space between the coal particles.

The Morongo Wilderness Study Area (WSA) is in south central San Bernardino County, California. U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the area during the fall of 1983. No mines, prospects, leases, or mining claims were found in the WSA. There are no known mineral deposits within the study area boundaries. Sand and gravel in the area is suitable for many types of construction uses, but similar and larger deposits outside the WSA are closer to markets. No energy resources have been identified in the WSA.

California leads the Nation in the number of operating metal mines and the small number of persons employed at individual mines, which reached a minimum irk 1932 with an average of seven men. The mines are scattered over the entire State, which is the second largest in area (155,562 square miles) in the United States. The mines are situated at various altitudes, with portals ranging from approximately 300 feet below sea level to almost 12,000 feet above. Many of the mines can be reached only during the summer, while at others the heat of the regions adds so the difficulties during the summer months Supplied of explosives the use (or, probably more correctly, the misuse) of which constitutes one of California's gravest mining problems; are handled and stored under condition that contribute many hazards. The problem of providing medical care is serious and complicated, especially at small mines and more particularly in the almost inaccessible mountainous regions; instances in which a knowledge of first aid would have been beneficial but was lacking, or when first aid was instrumental in saving life or limb because it was available are too numerous to be mentioned.

Bowie Resources maintains one of the most pro-active ground control programs in the U.S. mining industry today. Its guiding philosophy is that everyone in the organization, from the miners at the face all the way through the top management, are involved in ground control. Some of the unique elements of the Bowie ground control program include: • Roof bolt operators log the stratigraphy of test holes in nearly every cut. These “lith-graphs” are used by section foremen to determine the need for additional roof support, and they are entered into the geologic data base for use in geologic modeling and mapping. • Underground core drilling is conducted to obtain data for CMRR and stability maps. • Weekly “Quality” meetings, involving mine management and technical staff, are held to ensure that ground control information is integrated into production operations. The paper will describe the program in detail, discussing the involvement of roof bolters, section foremen, surveyors, technical staff, and production managers. It will also show how the program has contributed to the mine planning process. Case histories of successful ground control interventions will be discussed.

To reduce the possibility of injury to operators and damage to equipment caused by collision of mining vehicles during coal loading. Approach An energy-absorbing bumper was developed and tested underground on a continuous miner. How It Works The bumper, a long box-like weldment backed by five energy absorbers, is attached to a continuous mining machine by a hinge behind the cab. See Figure 1. When a shuttle car collides with the bumper, or when it is otherwise struck, the energy absorbers are compressed. This absorbs and dissipates part of the kinetic energy of the colliding vehicle, thereby reducing or eliminating its destructive effects. Each energy absorber consists of two chambers separated by a freely-moving piston. One chamber (Figure 2) contains hydraulic fluid. The second chamber contains a gas. When a collision causes the absorber to compress, the hydraulic fluid in the first chamber is forced past a metering pin and through an orifice. The hydraulic fluid then pushes against the piston, compressing the gas in the second chamber.

"In connection with the proposed use of Cordeau-Bickford to fire L.O.X. (liquid oxygen explosives) in well drill holes, the question has arisen as to the effect of very low temperatures on (1) the rate of detonation of Cordeau-Bickford; (2) the sensitiveness to detonation of its TNT filling; and (3) the lead covering of Cordeau-Bickford.The Cordeau-Bickford used in this investigation was the standard 6 mm. size, such as is regularly used in blasting, and was manufactured and furnished by the Ensign-Bickford Company, Simsbury, Conn. All pieces tested were taken from rolls, all of which were from the same melted batch of TNT in order that all the pieces tested might be as nearly identical as possible.Different portions of this Cordeau-Bickford were tested plain (not countered), countered, and double countered. The countering and double countering was carried out by the manufacturer prior to shipment.The determination of the temperature at the instant of making a test was accomplished by the use of a Leeds and Northrup potentiometer and copper constantan thermocouples. Each couple was made from No. 28 B & S gage wire with short junctions. One junction was inserted in a hole drilled by a No. 60 drill through one lead wall of the Cordeau-Bickford to approximately the opposite wall, so that this junction was in the center of the TNT filling while the other junction was immersed in ice water. The potentiometer readings in millivolts were converted to °C. from the calibration curve of the thermocouple wire,"

The Bureau of Mines has developed a pulse counting system with improved energy resolution and having dual channels to process pulses at different rates and a pulse pileup detector for channel selection. Pulse input is delayed until the detector determines if any pulse is so closely followed by a second pulse as to constitute pulse pileup. If no pulse pileup is detected, the slower channel is selected; this clips the pulse to a wide pulse width to retain good energy resolution. If pulse pileup is predicted, the fast channel, with correspondingly shorter pulse width, is selected to improve resolution with respect to time. Output of the two channels is transmitted to a pulse height analyzer for interpretation. The pulse processing system can process count rates above 300,000 counts per second with little loss in energy resolution.

The Bureau of Mines Heavy Metals Program emphasizes the need for improved analytical methods for gold determination. A commercially available ion exchange resin with high selectivity for gold was investigated as a potential method to collect gold from solution. The resin was found to quantitatively collect gold from acid solutions over a wide range of acid concentrations. Common metals were not collected by the resin nor did they seriously interfere with the collection of gold. X-ray spectrographic and neutron activation methods based on the use of papers containing this resin are proposed.

Rank the dust knockdown (airborne capture) ability of six different types of water spray nozzles, Approach A fixed quantity of dust is released into a large, closed chamber in a laboratory. Water sprays are turned on inside the chamber and their effectiveness on the dust cloud is evaluated from the rate at which the dust disappears. This method better simulates dust suppression underground than methods tried earlier. The results of the laboratory test were confirmed by conducting tests on a full-scale mod-el continuous miner face where dust levels were measured in the return airway. Results of the Closed Chamber Tests The graph indicates that atomizing nozzles provide the best use of water for dust scrubbing. However, use of these nozzles is limited by their susceptibility to damage and clogging. Hollow-cone nozzles perform almost as well as atomizing nozzles. Test results also indicate that full-cone, venturi-assisted, and flat-fan spray cones are about two-thirds as effective as hollow-cone nozzles. The least effective were venturi nozzles designed for moving air. The most significant advantage of hollow-cone nozzles over other nozzles tested is reduced clogging due to larger orifice size. The hollow-cone nozzle used in the test and depicted by the graph was type BD-3 manufactured by Spraying Systems Co., Wheaton, IL. This nozzle is already used on many continuous miners. Since 1988, there have been 17 documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through ground strata into occupied enclosed spaces as a result of proximate trench blasting or surface mine blasting. These incidents resulted in 39 suspected or medically verified carbon monoxide poisonings and one fatality. To better understand the factors contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out studies in a 12-foot diameter sphere to identify key factors that may enhance the levels of CO associated with the detonation of several commercial trenching explosives. The gaseous detonation products from emulsions, a watergel, and ANFO blasting agents as well as gelatin dynamite, TNT, and Pentolite boosters were measured in an argon atmosphere and compared with those for the same explosives detonated in air. Test variables included explosive formulation, wrapper, aluminum addition, oxygen balance, and density. Major contributing factors to CO production, under these laboratory test conditions, are presented. The main finding is the high CO production associated with the lack of afterburning in an oxygen poor atmosphere. Fumes measurements are compared with the manufacturer’s reported IME fume class and with the Federal Relative Toxicity Standard 30 CFR Part 15 in order to gain an understanding of the relative toxicity of some explosives used in trench blasting.
