Multiple-charged beams originating from a 300-kv ion accelerator are important tools in the study of metal surfaces and thin films. A knowledge of the particle range is necessary for an understanding of the interaction processes of the ions with the targets. Utilizing a theory developed by Lindhard for determining the range of low-energy ions in solids, the ranges of H, He, C, N, 0, and Ar ions in A1203, Al, Fe203, Fe304, CuO, Cu20, Fe, Cu, Sn, and W were calculated for the energy range 60 to 400 kev using a computer program written in BASIC. The range, presented in graphical form, is given in both µg/cm2 and angstroms. In addition, heavy ion ranges were calculated for comparison with published experimental values. For ions with Z > 5, the discrepancy between the calculated values and published experimental values generally ranged from 2 to 40 percent; the largest deviations were probably due to experimental error.

Coal-mine officials and those who are preparing to become officials should be familiar with the instruments and devices that are employed rather commonly in and around mines and should know how to use them with safety and efficiency. Among these axe instruments and devices used in determining the pressure, velocity, volume, and certain other conditions of ventilation and in detecting the more common mine gases, such as methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide, or a deficiency of that very important agent, oxygen. Water gages, anemometers, barometers, psychrometers, flame safety lamps, lamp-testing boxes, and methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide detectors are described and their use and operation discussed in this paper.

Data from 68 entrained-bed carbonization tests were treated statistically by the Bureau of Mines, and several useful relationships were developed among the major variables. Nine coals, ranging in rank from lignite A to high-volatile A bituminous, were carbonized in two entrained-bed carbonization pilot plants. The carbonizing reactors employed were vertically mounted cylinders, internally heated, refractory-lined, and 10 inches ID. The range of carbonization temperatures was from 825° to 1,600° F. Using a regression-analysis computer program, empirical equations were developed by which carbonization temperature, air-to-coal ratio, devolatilization of coal, char yield, and volatile matter content of product char may be predicted.

In the group of minerals used in making this study, the cyanite is associated with quartz, mica, and feldspar in the schist. The amount of quartz is variable, but it is always an abundant mineral. Both large and small crystals of quartz occur in irregular masses, rarely ever showing crystal outline. Mica Is of the clear and dark varieties, the larger crystals being dark as a rule, and the finer crystals of light color. The present mineralogical composition of the mina is rather variable, as most of the original biotite and muscovite have suffered alteration, and much secondary mica is present as a result of alteration of the original mica and other minerals present, especially the larger cyanite crystals. A large part of the mica now found in the ore is chlorite, with varying amounts of Jefferisite and others, especially sericite. These are in the form of aggregates, or felt-like intergrowths filling the spaces between the quartz, cyanite, and feldspar. The feldspar is plagioclase probably mostly albite. It is white, possesses good cleavage, and is one of the hard brittle minerals of the rock. It alters to kaolin, and sericite, and more or less of these alteration minerals are present within the feldspar crystals but not separated from them. The cyanite is of two varieties, distinguished by their colors as blue and white cyanite. The blue color varies in intensity, being a pronounced blue in some crystals and paler in shade in others. Some crystals have been seen which posses the blue color in one-half of their mass and are pure white or clear in the other half. The purity of the cyanite is probably not affected by the color, but it is difficult to detect the white cyanite in the ore by macroscopic examination, so that great care has to be exercised in the selection of the ore in the field. Of the above minerals, cyanite is the heaviest, having a specific gravity of 3.6; none of the others approach it in specific gravity. The usual as opiates of cyanite in the mica schists are garnet, magnetite, and tourmaline, but these have not been noted in the group of minerals treated, and their absence is a point of great value in favor of this ore, as they possess high specific gravities and interfere in separation processes, and if not separated they are detrimental because of their easily fusible character. Small amounts of apatite and titanite have been noted, but not enough to cause trouble.

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Board of the Mines Department for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine safety stations, and to F. R. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, Great Britain, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine safety testing stations in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as is the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy mine atmospheres which might, through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means used by these countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers of American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. This paper presents the second of these surveys, which covers conditions in Belgium.

Of the 19 major mine fire events (including thermal events) that have occurred in the last 6 years (2000-2005), it is estimated that remotely constructed mine seals could have been used at 65% of the events to control or suppress the fire. Underground observations of seals that have been remotely installed during mine fire events show that they often do not fully achieve mine roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib closure. Unfortunately, the inability to reliably close the mine void has limited or precluded the regular use of this technology. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting full-scale underground experiments at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to identify and remedy existing remote sealing technology shortcomings, to develop novel technologies, and to transfer the new or improved technologies to the mining industry. This paper will discuss the remote mine seal testing program and will provide the results of the in-mine experiments. The sulfur shortage that existed during the Korean conflict stimulated interest in coal measures as possible sources of sulfur. One of the areas brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines was in Marion County, Iowa, where comparatively high-sulfur coals and other marcasite-bearing strata were known to occur. A Bureau of Mines engineer inspected the marcasite occurrence on December 4, 1954; this prompted further work on the Iowa coals and associated formations as a source of iron sulfides. An investigation of the Iowa high-sulfur coals was undertaken including core drilling, field reconnaissance, and compilation of data pertinent to consideration of the following: 1. Upgrading Iowa coal by mechanical cleaning and the feasibility of recovering sulfur from coal brasses. 2. Possibility of processing the high-sulfur coals by adaptation of methods employed in processing industrial gases to produce sulfur and sulfur products. 3. Possibility of finding concentrations of iron sulfides in associated rock formations in sufficient quantity for economical recovery.

In this Bureau of Mines report, the optical detection of fires and explosions is considered fundamentally. The measured spectral radiances from methane-air ignitions are compared with the background irradiances from stray and ambient sources, and with the spectral sensitivites of various sensors. The comparison naturally suggests the optimum spectral ranges and signal processing logic that can uniquely characterize the ignition event. Both ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) are considered. Several alternate sensing methods are proposed and discussed. The development and testing of an IR system designed for use in ignition suppression devices in mines is described.

This report summarizes the work performed by the Bureau of Mines on the development of analytical procedures for determining metallic and interstitial impurities in high-purity tungsten. Fourteen published methods and seven unpublished methods are briefly described. Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, in microgram to higher quantity levels, can be determined by several methods. Trace levels of 29 metallic impurity elements can be determined by optical spectrography, X-ray spectrography, and other instrumental methods.

In coal mining it is essential to maintain the roof over working places and roadways in the safest condition possible. To this end every effort should be made to win the coal with the least injury to the immediate roof strata, as broken strata certainly present a greater hazard than a sound roof. The chief causes of injury to the roof in mining are inherent in the method of development and recovery and the blasting practices followed. The first, which may produce severe stresses in the roof, weakening it over comparatively large areas has been discussed in previous papers3 and will not be treated here. The second cause is local in effect, but with the same general method of blasting being employed throughout a mine having uniform roof conditions, similar effects on the roof may be expected. In the Bureau's investigation of accidents caused by falls of roof and coal it has been necessary to make a careful study of blasting practices and their effect on the immediate roof. The purpose of this paper is to show the effect of the observed methods of blasting on different types of roof and to point out methods that have been proved to be least harmful to the roof strata. The data used in preparing this paper have been compiled from reports made by Bureau engineers engaged in the study of falls of roof and coal, and embrace mines opened in the Pittsburgh coal in Ohio and Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh and Sewickley coals in West Virginia.

Since 1970, abnormally high methane emissions have been observed in eastern sections of the Federal No. 2 Mine operating in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in northern West Virginia. The nature and volume of these emissions indicate a source other than the coalbed. An investigation was undertaken to delineate probable methane sources. Gas well information and stratigraphic correlation of corehole data indicates that a sandstone directly above the main coalbed is an additional source of methane emissions. The sandstone body appears to be an ancient stream channel, infilled with fine-grained sand and organic matter. Coalification of the organic matter produced methane as a byproduct. Additional methane presumably migrated into the sandstone unit from the subjacent coalbeds. The methane became trapped in the porous clasticunit by the surrounding impermeable strata. Mine development near this unit creates a significant pressure gradient, triggering abnormal methane emissions into the mine along naturally occurring fractures. Pre-development methane drainage of the sandstone could be accomplished by completing vertical boreholes along its trend.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the applicability of existing material models to solve practical geotechnical mining-related problems by solving a yielding pillar stability problem considering confining effects on strength. Numerical difficulties normally encountered with modeling strain softening behavior were eased with a simplified computational procedure using a quasi-elastic approach to account for residual strength after initial failure. Although in agreement with a confined-core pillar design method using actual mine conditions that include mine layout geometry, overburden geology, and rock properties of the deposit and surrounding structure, the results cannot be verified because measured field data are not available at this writing.

Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The concept of data availability must be addressed, because there are perceptible changes from year to year, and the availability of accurately reported, precisely defined statistics and nonstatistical information provides the only sound basis for analytical studies required for government policy planning or industry market analysis. As the countries of Eastern Europe and the former U.S.S.R. undergo the transition from centrally planned economies to market economies, there has been a perceptible increase in information availability for rather obvious reasons. Any industrial operation seeking economic assistance from Government and/or private sources outside the country in which the facility is sited must provide some appraisal of its operations at the time it seeks assistance, as well as some information on previous performance to serve as tools in evaluating its potential under the proposed development scheme for which it seeks financial assistance. Additionally, there was growing governmental recognition that concealment of much of the national mineral production, trade, and consumption data for purposes of national military and/or economic security probably never was very successful, never was really necessary for most commodities, and certainly proved unnecessary with the end of the so-called cold war. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the potential of columbium-hafnium alloys as structural materials for use at elevated temperatures. The work described in this report was conducted to determine the properties of columbium-hafnium alloys and to select the more promising ones for further improvement. Properties determined in this report were machinability, hardness, workability, tensile strength, and oxidation resistance. Ten ingots, ranging from 100 percent columbium to 70 atomic-percent hafnium, were prepared and subjected to tests. The test results showed that the alloys with 33 and 50 atomic-percent hafnium were superior in workability, strength, and oxidation resistance. For the alloy series tested, the strength and hardness values increased with the increasing hafnium content. Maximum values were reached with 50 atomic-percent hafnium. The oxidation resistance was poorest at the 1 atomic-percent hafnium level but improved with increasing hafnium content through 70 atomic-percent. Eight of the ten ingots were fabricable at room temperature. The two remaining ingots, those with 5 and 10 atomic-percent hafnium, required hot-working.

Pillar recovery has been associated with nearly one third of roof fall fatalities in underground coal mines during the past decade. Safe pillar recovery requires global stability and local stability. Global stability is addressed primarily through pillar design. The local stability risk factors include cut sequence, the final pillar stump, supplemental supports (timbers vs. Mobile Roof Supports (MRS)), roof bolting, and many others. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated each of these factors through field research and analysis of accident statistics. The paper discusses design methods and technologies that have been transferred to the mining community and implemented.

Tables 16 through 19 continue the series of providing the world merchant fleet distribution by type of vessel and the ranking of the major fleets by country of registry. Table 20 this year provides a summary of the world's liquid gas carrier fleet. These vessels are included in the totals given for the world's tanker fleet, but gives a breakdown demonstrating the growth of the importance of natural gas in the world's energy commodity consumption. Panama and Suez Canals Tables 21 and 22 provide the latest available information on the transit of mineral commodities through the Panama Canal, by number of vessels, direction, and the commodities transported. Although the number of vessels transiting the Panama Canal dropped slightly (0.5%) between 1989 and 1990, the total amount of cargo moved rose by 3.6% and the amount of mineral commodities moved rose by 7.2%.
