THE MILDEST recession of the postwar period ended in the first months of 1961, and the economy climbed steadily during the remainder of the year. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) Index of Industrial Production climbed from a low point of 102 (1957=100) in February to 115 in December, a rise of 12.5 percent. But economic activity for the year as a whole was only 1.5 percent higher than the 1960 level, as measured by real gross national product (GNP). Although activity increased throughout 1961, much of it was merely regaining ground lost in the decline during the second half of 1960 and the first months of 1961. The FRB index did not re ain the July 1960 high of 110 until June of 1961. Mineral fuels did not fully share in the economic recovery. The (FRB) crude oil and natural gas index rose only 5 percent between February and December. Although the index of monthly coal production increased 11.5 percent during the year, the February level was so low that total production for the year was the lowest since 1954. Total production of energy measured in Btu's was up slightly (1 percent) during the ear. Coal production was down; production of crude oil and natural gas was up. Calculated consumption paralleled production-total up slightly, coal lower, and crude oil and natural gas higher. The most interesting product developments were in coke and residual fuel oil. The Bureau of Mines annually canvasses the peat producers in the United States and publishes economic data on the industry, based upon reports from producers. This publication lists all producers that reported commercial production to the Bureau for 1959. The companies named herein represent virtually all commercial producers of peat. A few companies, however, may not have been canvassed or failed to respond, as tine survey is voluntary For producers, arid the industry has many small operations that operate intermittently. No consideration was given to the quantities of peat produced and output of the various companies listed ranged from less than 100 tons to more than 50,000 tons, Peat is included in the Bureau's annual surveys of the mineral industries because, technically, peat is a fuel. Although none is used for fuel in the United States, peat is a potential source of energy and one of our large mineral resources. The domestic peat industry produces peat chiefly for use as a soil amendment. The industry has expanded rapidly during the past decade with active operations increasing from 45 in 1947-49 4/ to 105 in 1959. Output during this period has increased 218 percent, rising from 131,782 net tons to 419,460 net tons.

This report gives general expressions for evaluating various thermo-dynamic properties applicable to a two-component system, including liquid-vapor equilibria. In addition, expressions are developed for some of the quantities useful in making thermodynamic consistency checks on phase equilibria data. These formulas were developed from the general principles of thermodynamics and are expressed in terms of the compressibility factor, which is assumed to be an explicit function of the molal density, the absolute thermodynamic temperature, and the composition.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine if low-grade California chromite ores could be beneficiated to produce products suitable for commercial use. This research is part of a Bureau goal to provide technology capable of using low-grade domestic ores to meet emergency demands of the Nation for metals and minerals and in particular those minerals, such as chromite, which are considered critical. Two ores from California were ground and treated using gravity concentration and magnetic separation techniques. An are from Auburn in central California, assaying 2.5 pct Cr203, was treated by tabling and magnetic separation to yield a nonmagnetic product containing 44.7 pct Cr203 at a recovery of 36.4 pct. Core drilling samples from the Seiad Creek area of northern California, assaying about 6 pct Cr203, were upgraded by tabling to yield a concentrate containing nearly 50 pct Cr203 with a recovery of 50 pct. Both products are suitable for metallurgical and/or chemical use.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was twofold. The first phase of the work was to determine the technical and mechanical feasibility of defluorinating low-grade siliceous fluorspars on an intermediate scale by high-temperature pyrohydrolysis in a rotary kiln. The second phase was to react the liberated hydrogen fluoride (HF) offgas with alumina monohydrate to produce commercial-grade aluminum fluoride (85 percent AIF3). The two phases of the work were to be integrated into a single continuous process. Evaluation of the data shows that low-grade siliceous fluorspars can be successfully defluorinated, either in a solid or a molten state, in a gas-fired rotary kiln in the presence of water vapor at 1,250° to 1,350° C. The water produced by combustion of propane was sufficient to yield defluorinatians of 75 to 85 percent.

Samples of materials containing pyrite from various coal mines and coalbeds were studied to compare their compositions and oxidizing characteristics. Pyrite was the only form of iron sulfide identified, but X-ray diffraction, emission spectrography, and microscopic analyses revealed similar suites of minerals and trace elements. The pyrite occurred usually in spherical clusters of very small crystals. The oxidation of pyrite in solutions of PeSO4 and Fe2(SO4)3 and in the presence of an iron oxidizing bacterium Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans, was studied through a manometric technique. FeS04 or Fe2(SO4)3 solutions had no appreciable influence on pyrite oxidation under the test conditions, The bacterium acted as a catalyst, greatly increasing the oxidation rates; however, in three samples that also contained calcites, bacterial oxidation was greatly reduced. The oxidation rates also increased approximately as the percentage of pyrite in the samples increased. For the series of samples studied, there was no definite correlation of the results with the location of the various mines nor with the acidity of alkalinity of the mine drainage.

Applicability of the fluosilicate sintering process to recovering beryllium from beryl-spodumene concentrate analyzing 1.4 to 3.7 percent BeO (10 to 30 percent beryl) was investigated. The work was one phase of a Bureau of Mines research program undertaken to assess applicability of conventional processes and to devise new procedures for treating various potential beryllium feed materials. Beryllium recovery of about 70 percent in a product of 99-percent BeO grade was achieved in treating 3D-percent beryl concentrate. The process consisted of (1) sintering a briquetted charge of concentrate, soda ash, and sodium fluosilicate for 3 hours at 750° C.; (2) extracting the soluble beryllium by multiple stages of water leaching; (3) adding caustic to the leach solution and boiling to hydrolyze and precipitate crude beryllium hydroxide; (4) dissolving the crude beryllium hydroxide in sulfuric acid and separating the solution from undissolved silica; (5) sulfidizing the acid beryllium solution to precipitate heavy metal impurities; (6) adding ammonia to the clarified sulfate solution to precipitate beryllium hydroxide; and (7) converting the hydroxide to beryllium oxide (beryllia) by calcining at 900° C. About 60 percent more sodium fluoSilicate was required per unit of beryl than is used industrially in treating 10-to 12-percent BeO concentrate (80 to 90 percent beryl). Recovery decreased, and flux requirements increased, when treating concentrates containing less beryl.

The Bureau of Mines identified and evaluated major sources of quartz dust during overburden drilling at a surface coal mine, The relative contribution of each source to the total dust hazard was estimated, using personal gravimetric and instantaneous dust-sampling devices. No attempt was made to determine actual dust generation rates. The major sources of dust at the drill rig during dry drilling opera-tions were the collector dump, drill shroud leakage, and drill stem seal leakage, These sources contributed 90 pct of the respirable dust and 89 pet of the respirable quartz dust generated during drilling, The collector dump cycle (21.6 pct of total drilling time) accounted for 38 pct of the respirable dust and 41 pct of the respirable quartz dust, with peak dust concentrations reaching 68 mg/m3. Shroud and drill stem leakage contributed 28 and 24 pct of the respirable dust and 32 and 16 pct of the respirable quartz dust, respectively. A dragline and second drill rig contributed the remaining 10 pct of dust and 11 pct of quartz dust. Gravimetric dust samples collected inside the drill cab and outside, near the cab door, averaged 1.65 and 1.43 mg/m3, respectively, with 6 pct respirable quartz.

Introduction The Cost program was developed to provide the planning engineer with a tool to evaluate the cost implications of the technical mine design decisions. Direct costing methods are employed, where feasible, to provide greater detail and accuracy in the primary cost centers. Options have been provided in the cost computation, economic analysis, and output data subsystems to increase the flexibility of the system. Computer Program The program is written in Fortran IV for use in the IBM System 360/370 computers. i. Main - The main routine reads and stores input data from three sources, user input, Cost Data Library, and data transfer from the Master Design Simulator. Data is trans¬ferred to the appropriate subroutines, as they are called, by means of labeled common blocks. ii. Subroutine CSTCOM - is a data modification routine which computes the peripheral charges related to labor and supervisory costs. iii. Subroutine MANPWR - interrogates section data to determine the total labor and supervisory costs for each cost center. iv. Subroutine CAPCST - computes the total capital investment for each cost center, including the economic life and salvage value of each element. Over and above the technical support arid consulting work described in the preceding Parts of this Volume, ADL staff also provided a wide range of additional technical assistance to the Bureau on an ad hoc basis over the course of the contract, and particularly in 1973. Some of these assignments were on tasks that temporarily assumed a high priority at PMSRC, requiring a fast response, while others were more suited to conventional schedules but on communication and location topics less directly related to those in the preceding Parts. Chapter I briefly describes some of the diverse short-term assignments while Chapters I1through V treat assignments on the other topics. I SHORT-TEXM ASSIGNMENTS A sampling of short-term, fast-response assignments undertaken on mine communications and miner location for PMSRC during 1973 are given below. These assignments included technical reviews, discussions and recommendations related to the theory, experimental data, designs, and hardware implementation of experimental CW and pulse miner location EM transmitters; preparation of technical performance specifications for a miniaturized preproduction prototype CW electromagnetic location transmitter; review of specifications for a seismic signal detection experimental study; participation in technical discussions and experiments with PMSRC and equipment suppliers regarding the UHF radio/radiax-cable communications installation in the Bruceton mine; participation in an informal conference to discuss mine communication and monitoring needs and preferences with representatives of the Bureau, mine operators, and equipment manufacturers; participation in technical discussions with representatives of a U.S. mine operator and CERCHAR* concerning the characterization of faults on trolley lines and means of improving their rapid detection;** recommendation of simple signal, noise, and ground fault measurements on mine phone lines; review of an inexpensive automatic telephone dialer; preliminary discussions regarding the feasibility of adapting and assembling a collection of available telephone industry carrier equipment for installation and test in an operating coal mine; evaluation of a proposed call alert mine paging system; review of hardware designs and future experiments for a mine communication sled; design critique of a proposed six-channel narrow-band FM voice modem for carrier communication on the mine phone line; preparation of technical performance

Large quantities of combustible materials are often found in underground metal and nonmetal mines, with support timber predominating. Wood lagging and timber, wires and cables, brattice cloth, hose, paper products, cardboard cartons, and wooden containers are additional combustible materials commonly found in underground storage areas. Shorted or overloaded electrical cables, worn sockets and plugs, spontaneous combustion, careless smoking, and welding and cutting are common fire ignition sources. Inexpensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning and to extinguish fires that originate in underground storage areas.

An examination of the physical properties of manganese ores is being made at the Mississippi. Valley Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Missouri. The object of the study is to find out how much these ores can be beneficiated by such processes as jigging, tabling, magnetic separation, and flotation. Some. of the results were given in an earlier report.4 Eighty samples obtained from various prospects and mines throughout the country have been examined; this is a very small part of those that should be examined before the work can be a definite factor in-the appraisal of manganese ores or the guide in beneficiation which the operators seek. The ore deposits are not expected to reach to great depths vertically, after the manner of copper and gold, but in lateral distribution their greater extent is notable. This applies particularly to the residual and replacement deposits of manganese.

The manufacture of lubricating oils from wax-bearing crude petroleums involves the removal and recovery of the paraffin wax contained in the lubricating distillates. During this process several intermediate products are formed, among them the mixture of waxes and oils known to the refiners as "foots oil." Because of its complex character, foots oil is little understood, and therefore methods of handling it in refineries are often inefficient. The Bureau of Mines is studying the manufacture of lubricating oils, and during the work has investigated the redistillation of foots oil. This report gives in brief the results of the investigation, and recommendations based upon it.

This report discusses the Bureau of Mines' efforts to develop partial protective structures for operators of low-coal shuttle cars. In coal seams 48 in high or less, full-coverage canopies are generally difficult or may be impossible to implement on high-speed face equipment due to the restrictions they impose on the operator's vision and comfort. Lim- ited coverage is one alternative that provides an acceptable level of operator protection in thin-seam applications where conventional full- coverage canopies cannot be used. Three possible limited-coverage de- sign scenarios (roll bars, sliding canopies, and flip-top canopies) were designed, fabricated, and evaluated for low-coal shuttle cars. All three designs were determined to be feasible and desirable for low-coal shuttle car application.

The pollution of streams by acid mine drainage has become of great importance in the past few years in certain regions of the United States. Large quantities of acids are used in a discharged from other industries than mining, notably in tube, sheet, tin-plate and era hell inn works. These are usually less important then coal mines as a source of acid drainage, because of their more limited distribution throughout the States most affected by acid waters and their relatively smaller numbers. Streams are naturally alkaline and are, therefore, able to take care of rather large quantities of acid wastes, but when such enormous quantities as are often found in mining districts enter the streams, the natural alkalinity is quickly overcome. When a neutral or almost neutral condition has been reached, the further addition of a relatively slight quantity of acids will cause a great difference in the quality of the water.

Hematite-to-magnetite reduction kinetics were investigated mainly in CO-CO2 atmospheres at temperatures ranging from 500° to 1,000° C. Reduction rates were measured with a thermobalance, which recorded the weight loss as the specimen was reduced. Reduction data on both synthetic and natural hematite spheres showed good linearity of ro [1-(1-R)1/3] with time, t, up to over 85 pct conversion to magnetite; the rate coefficient (k[L], cm/min) obtained from the linear portion of the plot was used to characterize the penetration rate of the hematite-magnetite interface. Gas composition, porosity, and silica content were major factors affecting the rate. Temperature dependency of the reaction rate was small, yielding a mean activation energy of about 3 kcal/mole. Silica additions increased the reaction rate, probably through an increase in the effective surface area and diffusion; however, above 900° C, silica can react to form fayalite. Experimental data showed that the linear thickening rate of the magnetite layer, normally evidence of a chemically controlled reaction, can also be indicative of a reaction controlled by both mass transfer and diffusion. Evidence from this study indicates that the dominant rate-controlling factor in the reduction of hematite to magnetite at high temperatures is transport in the gas phase.

"The copper industry has had a long and interesting history associated with leaching, involving vat, dump, heap, and in situ methods. The Bureau of Mines has also had an interest in copper leaching and has researched the techniques of solution recovery, particularly concentrating on in situ methods. In situ mining is a relatively low cost method and has been proven commercially successful by nine operations. It has been most commonly used for final recovery in old workings at the conclusion of conventional mining operations.This report brings together information about 10 commercial in situ operations as well as 14 experimental projects. These 24 sites comprise most of the in situ copper mining activities that have taken place in the United States. Background information, geology, ore preparation, solution application, and recovery and processing are provided for each operation. Production data and tables summarizing the engineering statistics for each operation and an extensive in situ mining bibliography are included. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to summarize the documented in situ copper leach mining activities that have taken place in the United States. It was prepared to provide a source of engineering and operating data upon which future in situ copper mining activities can be based. Twenty-four different sites are discussed. These are all of the sites that are known to the authors from the extensive in situ copper leach mining bibliography developed at the Bureau's Twin Cities (MN) Research Center (Appendix B).In situ copper leach mining activities fall into the following categories:1. Commercial operations with ore body preparation.2. Commercial operations in old mine workings.3. Experimental programs.Ore body preparation includes such activities as blasting, block caving, and hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracing) specifically to fragment the ore body. Operations in old mine workings include those done in open pits, worked out block caved areas, and backfilled stopes where leaching is done as an afterthought to conventional mining. Experimental programs are small-scale tests of the feasibility of a commercial operation. Some of these programs did not progress to the point where leach solutions were applied to the ore.Each operation (locations shown in figure 1) will be discussed in terms of background information, geology, ore preparation, solution application, recovery and processing, and engineering and production data. Information was collected from published reports, communications with company personnel, and site visits."

An accurate assessment of the vertical stress on a coal seam at depth is important for mine design. Vertical stress calculation techniques presently available either are not sufficiently accurate or cannot handle complex surface topography. Therefore, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a computerized method to calculate vertical stress exerted on surfaces at depth that includes the effect of topography. Two input data sets are required: a digital elevation model containing topographic elevations and a coal seam file defining coal seam elevations at depth. Boussinesq's equation then quantifies the vertical stress resulting from topography. The computerized method was tested on a coal seam overlain by a complex topography where a vertical stress map encompassing several square miles was produced. Results show that depth mitigates the affects of surface topography, while the coal seam topography has a direct effect on the vertical stress. In comparison to the computerized method, the direct stress method overestimates stress under hills and underestimates stress under valleys. The largest difference between the two methods occurs under the steepest topographic relief. A limitation of the computerized method is that stresses cannot be accurately determined near an outcrop.

Preliminary examination of the McCormick chromite property was made by the Federal Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines during the spring and summer of 1943. In October 1943 an exploratory project was undertaken by the Bureau in cooperation with the Survey and was completed in February 1944.The urgent need during the war for high-grade lump chromite such as produced at the McCormick mine, was one of the pertinent reasons for the project. The McCormick mine is situated about 12 miles southwest of the town of Sonora, in the foothill belt of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Tuolumne County, Calif. The chromite occurs as irregularly shaped lenses in masses of dunite contained in a steeply dipping, sheared, serpentinized zone of peridotite, near a contact with granodiorite.

This user's guide covers the operation of a suite of three computer programs-Bplane, Bstepp, and Bwedge. These programs can be used to evaluate the potential for plane shear, step-path, and wedge failures along the crest of a slope bench. Such failures reduce the width of a catch bench and may compromise the bench's ability to catch rolling or sliding material before it reaches miners working below. The Bplane and Bwedge programs address sliding of blocks defined by continuous planar joints. The Bstepp program examines sliding of blocks defined by more complex failure surfaces that include steeply dipping cross joints and may even include breaks across small bridges of intact rock. The programs are applicable to jointed rock masses where the joints are small relative to the overall slope and form a number of sets with uniform statistical characteristics within a slope sector. The theoretical basis, application, and operation of these programs are described.
