Lignite mining in North Dakota was begun about 1884 to supply the domestic needs of settlers. Annual production has grown rather slowly but steadily, exceeding 3 million tons in 1950. The western part of the State has lignite reserves, amounting to 351 billion tons, underlying an area of 28,000 square miles. Contour strip mining has almost completely replaced underground mining as the method of production. Lignite is often found under rather shallow and easily removed overburden, and this is the primary reason for the change in mining practice. Current mining operations are conducted where the overburden is 30 to 70 feet thick. Contour strip mining results in high production rates, at present 27 to 56 tons per man-day. These high production rates result in relatively low production costs.

This report contains a summary of Phase I and complete results of Phase II portions of a study of geologic factors associated with roof falls in mines on the Pocahontas #3 coal seam in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. Principal objectives of Phase I was the selection of five mines that best portrayed the spectrum of roof and mining conditions and Phase II consisted of a measurement and documentation program for each of the five mines. The documentation measurement program included reconnaissance mapping, detailed mapping, joint measurements and coring roof rock. 1.2 PHASE I RESULTS The results of Phase I consisted of the selection of the following five mines for detailed study: Virginia Pocahontas #3 (Island Creek Coal Company), Bishop (Consolidation Coal Company), Shannon Branch (Allied Chemical Company), Keystone II (Eastern Associated Coal Company) and Macalpine-East Gulf (Westmorelenad Coal Company). In addition, Phase I results, which were based on questionnaire data, indicated that the kind of rock in the roof --gray sandstone, crystallized sandstone, laminated sandstone and shale, grey shale, slickensided shale, and rider seams could be associated with good and bad top areas. Also presence of vertical separations, bolt length, entry and cross-cut width, length and torque on bolts and depth of overburden seemed to be related factors. These data provided a focus for the Phase II measurement program.

The Federal Bureau of Mines is publishing a series of studies on the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. This report describes the longwall-mining methods and techniques used at the Radon mine, Big Indian district, San Juan County, Utah. The tabular Radon ore body lies on the southwest flank of the Lisbon Valley anticline, strikes N. 10° W., dips 7° SW., and has an average thickness of 4-1/2 to 5 ft. The mine is developed by a three-compartment vertical shaft, a haulage level driven beneath the ore, and a system of drifts driven within and parallel to the strike of the ore.

This report presents a study of a modification of the precision laboratory carbonization-assay apparatus that renders the unit capable of performance at low-, medium-, and high-temperature assay levels and permits, under controlled conditions, evaluation of the relationship between carbonization temperature and the yield of pyrolysis products. Second, the interest and value derived from the temperature study data directly apply to the particular semiplant carbonization processes and techniques currently being investigated in this laboratory. Data obtained with the assay apparatus enables the fuel technologist to predict the probable yields of carbonization products from pilot-plant operations under various carbonizing conditions. Data obtained with the assay apparatus has been used to predict the product yields of industrial carbonization plants at Kemmerer, Wyo., and Rockdale, Tex. The assay provides a useful tool in detecting, from the carbonized plant product, the degree of effectiveness of pilot-plant operation. Third, the residual volatile matter in some industrial carbons has broad significance. Evaluation of the volatile material remaining with or in the carbon may be assessed through the high-temperature-assay technique. The low-temperature carbonization assay devised by the writers has proved to be a versatile tool in predicting the probable product yields from pilot-scale carbonization processes. The apparatus described in previous publications has been modified to extend the range of testing above 500° C. without impairing the accuracy and reproducibility obtained in the low-temperature range. Results presented here include product yields from a typical Texas lignite and Wyoming subbituminous-B-rank coal over the temperature range 150° to 1,000° C.

(a) Moisture. - Moisture, "as fired," is specifically significant in pulverized-coal firing because of its effect upon the continuity of raw-coal feed to the pulverizer, pulverizer capacity, flame stability, and speed of ignition. The extraneous moisture content is a rough index of potential difficulties in unloading and maintaining the flow of raw coal to the pulverizer and of pulverized coal to the furnace, with the troubles increasing geometrically as the percentage increases. Sticking or other stoppage of coal flow at any point between the bunker and the furnace is especially serious with pulverized-coal firing because there is danger of immediate loss of output. Where moisture is a problem, the designer must exercise great care in the design of coal-handling and preparation apparatus.

The Bureau of Mines used micro fracture density analysis of quartz grains in thin sections and diametric pulse velocity measurements along preblast and postblast cores to determine the nature and extent of rock damage produced by small (0.25-,0.50-,1.0-, and 2.0-kg) charges of high intensity explosive (C-4) in granite. Pulse velocities from the postblast cores were significantly lower than velocities from the preblast cores and, with the core logs, provided clear identification of the upper and sometimes the lower limits of most severe damage. These zones ranged from about 1.68 ft for the 0.25-kg blast to 4.16 ft for the 2.0-kg blast. Microfracture densities from postblast cores were significantly higher and more variable than densities measured from preblast cores. The microfracture density measurements showed that microscopic damage was present far past the zones of most severe damage as delineated by the pulse velocity logs and core logs. An exponential relation-ship was observed between the micro fracture density levels and the charge weight.

A stirred reactor (SR) combustion system has been developed to gather information on the mechanisms of ignition and flame propagation of coal dust under conditions similar to those found in coal dust explosion flames. The prime scaling variable considered in this study is that of rapid particle heating (between 105 and 106°K/sec) which is accomplished by means of turbulent mixing during combustion. The SR combustors tested in this study have consisted basically of spheres hollowed in the centers of refractory housings. Coal and air mixtures have been injected into the spherical combustion chambers through a single jet, two opposed jets or four opposed jets. The diameters of the jets have ranged from 0.63 to 0.22 cm. The volumes of the combustion chambers have ranged from 1.0 to 0.2 liters. The reactors have been equipped with thermocouples embedded in the combustion chamber wall as well as a thermocouple located in the exhaust gas stream. In the latter versions of the SR, provisions were made for both solid sampling and gas sampling of the reactant stream exiting from the combustion chamber. Experiments have been carried out using pulverized bituminous coal. The coal has been reacted in an SR in mixtures of air and air/nitrogen. These experiments have provided information on the mode of ignition of the coal as well as yielding information on the kinetics of coal pyrolysis through the use of SR theory. Ash tests performed on the reacted samples collected from the SR indicated that the majority of the values of weight loss percentage were between 60 and 70 percent. The percentages of weight loss were relatively unaffected by changes in temperature which varied between 1100 and 1700°K and by changes in residence time which varied between 10 and 20 millisec. Volatile matter tests performed on the samples indicated that the volatile matter left in the char ranged from 3 to 20 percent of the original content. By assuming that all the mass loss was due solely to pyrolysis with no combustion occurring at the particle surface, Q-factors for each test have been calculated. The results of these calculations indicate an average value of Q equal to 1.88. This finding shows that the majority of mass loss can be attributed to pyrolysis. The fact that the extent of reaction varies only slightly over the range of test conditions has been examined in the context of the two component hypothesis of coal constitution. This approach leads to the conclusion that the reaction of the "easily evolved" component VMI is extremely rapid and that the majority of it is removed from the coal in times less than the residence time in the system. This means that the volatile residue remaining in the char can be considered to consist of component II, VMII. If the mass fraction of VMI = 0, then an activation energy of 18.0 kcal is obtained for the pyrolysis reaction. If the mass fraction is assumed to be 0.75, the activation energy increases to 31.2 kcal.

"Initiated as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense, various mines in the Poughkeepsie Gulch and Mineral Point mining districts were examined by C. R. Wilfley, W. R. Hamilton, .and N. E. Wvvlwy, Jr., Bureau Of 'Mines engineers, in July and August 1943, July 1944, and September 1945. In a subsequent report a proposal was made to evaluate this isolated area 'of some 15 square miles located in Ouray and San Juan Counties, Colo.Reconnaissance work in the area was begun in June 1946. Mapping and sampling were begun in July and was completed in Pougkeepsie Gulch and extended westward to include the Hendrick Gulch area of the east side of Ironton Park. Project work was recessed for the winter on October 15, 1946 after approximately 6 square miles of the Poughkeepsie Gulch,district been mapped and 801 samples had been taken.In this report the physical features, climate, and ore deposits districts are described, and a brief history of mining and production lead, zinc; and silver is given.The individual mines and prospects in, the area are described in detail.A list of patented claims and ownerships is given in appendix I, and analyses of samples are tabulated in appendix II.The San Juan preliminary project was directed by Paul T. Allsman, chief, Salt Lake City Branch, Mining Division and was supervised by William M. Traver, Jr., supervising engineer, Colorado Field. Office.Chemical analyses were made by the Salt Lake City laboratory under the direction of H.E. Peterson, chemist, and S. R. Zimmerley, chief, Salt Lake City Branch, Metallurgical Division.Harold A. This report presents the results of a washability study of 322 coal mine samples showing the sulfur forms and distribution in the coals. The samples were collected from mines which were principally utility coal producers. Generally, the data show the total sulfur content of the coals evaluated could be significantly reduced by some combination of stage crushing and specific gravity separation. However, few coals could be upgraded to a final product containing 1 percent or less total sulfur. The complete washability data are presented for each sample processed. A statistical evaluation is included for the coalbeds from which more than 10 samples were collected and for the geographical coal producing regions. A graphical summation is presented for the coal producing regions and selected coalbeds.

Gas chromatography is a method of separating mixtures of gases and volatile materials by entraining their vapors in a gas stream, which passes over an appropriate stationary phase. Two techniques are in common use: Gas-Liquid Chromatography, in which the stationary phase is a liquid supported on an inert solid, and Gas-Solid Chromatography, where the stationary phase is a solid adsorbent, such as charcoal or alumina. In both techniques components emerge from the column after a characteristic residence time. Gas chromatography is applicable as a qualitative or quantitative tool in a wide variety of problems in chemical research and processing. It may also be employed for purification and separation. A running bibliography on gas chromatography has been maintained at the Bureau of Mines synthetic liquid fuels laboratories, Bruceton, Pa., for several years for the benefit of research workers, who use chromatography as an analytical tool. Since the number of references grew and interest in the technique became more wide-spread, the Bureau is publishing this list rather than maintain it as a purely internal source.

THE BITUMINOUS coal and lignite industry declined slightly in 1961, compared with the 1960 figures. All of the major items, production, consumption, average value, exports, and employment, declined. Even the steady upward trend in mechanization failed to materialize; the percentages of total tonnages mechanically loaded and cleaned remained the same as in the preceding year. However, tonnage per man per day increased from 12.83 tons in 1960 to 13.87 tons in 1961, owing partly to the increased tonnage produced by continuous mining machines. Also, the percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1961-403 million tons-was 3 percent less than the 416 million tons produced in 1960. Production was retarded in 1961, owing largely to the business recession and reduced exports.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop and improve mining methods for mining thin coal beds, to increase productivity, and to increase the recovery of coal. German coal planers and a modified longwall system of mining were introduced into American mines and are bringing about increased productivity and better recovery as compared with the conventional methods displaced. Since the first installation, 4 additional planers have been purchased by coal companies and over 1-1/2 mil¬lion tons of coal has been mined by them, using the modified longwall mining method. INTRODUCTION Except from 1932 to 1934, the growth of mechanical loading in underground bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States has increased steadily. The amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground mines has increased from 0.3 percent in 1923 to 79.6 percent of the total underground production in 1953.3/ The use of new and improved mining machines and auxiliary equipment, together with new techniques in mining methods, usually has resulted in increased productivity.

Water pollution has been an integral part of most mining operations in the past. Most mine planners had designed their mining operations with little or no regard for prevention of water pollution. The main planning element was always the economics of mineral recovery. Quite often the cheapest means of mineral recovery resulted in the largest water pollution problems. Recent water pollution laws have introduced a new economic element - water pollution control costs - to be considered in mine planning. Water pollution control costs can be extremely high. Foresighted planning can minimize these costs and provide better water pollution control. Effective pollution control preplanning can eliminate pollution from active mines and minimize pollution that may occur after completion of mining. Presently available technology can practically eliminate water pollution by treatment of the mine water. Use of water treatment during mining has no effect on the levels of water pollution after treatment ceases and the mine is abandoned. Therefore, this section of the report deals with preplanning to reduce water pollution, both present and future, by using at-source control techniques. Proper planning of mining and pollution control techniques should follow the concept of a complete, comprehensive reclamation plan. This plan should have control measures designed for all phases of mining from initiation through completion. Preplanning involves acquiring complete information concerning the future mine site, defining the reasons why mining could cause pollution from the site, and determination of available techniques to prevent or minimize formation or transportation of pollutants. Location of haulage and access roads and other mine related facilities should be included in preplanning for water pollution control. No detailed information has been published heretofore on the performance of small industrial-type anthracite stokers in building-heating service, apparently because of the difficulty of comparing the performance of one unit with that of another over an entire season's operation. Studies of competitive heating fuels have been similarly handicapped, and attempts to compare fuels are seldom technically sound in this investigation, the performance of a 60-in. Losch4 stoker burning rice-size anthracite in a standard commercial boiler was observed during a 4-month winter-spring season. It was used to heat two buildings at the Bureau of Mines' Anthracite Research Center at Schuylkill Haven, Pa., with the customary type of automatic pressure-range control. Attendance was limited to inspecting, fuel weighing, data recording, and ash removal. Results were computed daily and grouped by weekly periods to minimize daily irregularities. The same stoker-boiler unit had already been tested in a series of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) test code runs, with the stoker running continuously and with other conditions well stabilized A comparison of results from the code test and the building-heating tests provided information not available in the past for a single stoker unit, assisted in analyzing heat losses not computable in a cyclic operation, and established a basis for evaluating stoker performance in heating service.

This final report documents the work done by Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC) , on Contract H0122026 (which began in August of 1971) . Under this contract ADL provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau's programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of in- dependent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau's contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Communications," and Volume II, "seismic Detection and, Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume.

"This study by the Federal Bureau of Mines was confined to pillaring with continuous mining machines and to mines where total extraction is practiced. Many different conditions and practices in as many coalbeds as possible in Pennsylvania were observed.Pillar extraction or pillaring can be the most productive part of coal mining if done properly; but it also can be the most dangerous if done improperly.Because of the need for more careful planning before and caution during pillaring, many mining companies resort to the undesirable practice of stumping or hogging of pillars with subsequent unnecessary waste of valuable natural resources. Pillaring can be done at reasonable cost and safely, as proven at many mines where complete extraction is practiced and enviable cost and accident records are maintained.Although continuous mining machines are bulky and sometimes difficult to maneuver, they have been used with great success in pillaring. Occasionally, however, a machine is caught, or men are injured by a fall during pillar recovery. This Bureau survey was conducted to ascertain how safe and successful pillaring (especially the removal of final stumps in lifts or the final stump of a pillar), is accomplished in some mines, while others have considerable difficulty under similar conditions.The Bureau hopes the information to be presented in this publication will prove beneficial to those who wish to recover more pillar coal and to improve their accident record during such procedures."

This information circular is one of a series describing mining methods and costs, being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Sunbright mine of the Foote Mineral Co. at Sunbright, Va., is the southernmost underground limestone mine in the State. It is a comparatively recent operation, and a description of its rapid development to production stage may have particular interest for the limestone-mining industry. However, certain key items declined. The steady upward trend in mechanization failed to materialize for the third year; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 2 previous years; and the tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. The percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1962-422 million tons-was 5 percent greater than the 403 million tons produced in 1961. Production was greater in 1962, owing largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities and to more exports.
