Develop a more efficient method of testing the integrity of in-situ leach mining operations. The Problems For economic and environ-mental reasons, in-situ leaching operations must be sure that wells do not leak. Loss of solution in large quantities can be expensive in itself, and if such losses result in pollution the costs can be even higher. Wells are usually tested for leaks by sealing them with packers, pressurizing them and monitoring the pressure drop. However, many commercially-available packers are designed to be used in steel-cased wells rather than the fiberglass-or plastic-cased wells used for in-situ mining. These packers are heavy, cumbersome, expensive, and often leak. In addition, commonly used well-integrity-test systems require lengthy test periods and drill rigs or hoist trucks with rigid pipes must be used to run the packers in and out of the well. The Bureau of Mines has developed a mobile, self-contained leak-testing system that is faster, uses trailer-mounted equipment that can be operated by one person, and features a new inflatable packer.

"Permissible exposure limits (PELs) have been established for gaseous pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and some gas-phase hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, as yet, no PEL recommended for diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA), nor is there a standard method for sampling this aerosol.The University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) which utilizes size-selective inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were made in underground coal mines that use diesel equipment.The mine mean DEA concentrations for the five mines surveyed, determined with the PDEAS in the haulageway, was 0.89 mg/m3, with a standard deviation of 0.44 mg/m3. DEA contributed 52 % of the respirable aerosol at this location.In three of the mines filter samples were collected for DEA-associated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biological activity determinations. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust. In general, the PAH and biological activity levels were similar for all three mines, and indicate that up to 25 % of the haulageway concentrations may be contributed by outby diesel vehicles. Measured concentrations of CO, CO2. NO, NO2, and SO2, were well below regulated levels.INTRODUCTIONDiesel exhaust contains pollutant gases, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and gas-phase hydrocarbons, as well as DEA. Much of the health-related concern focuses on DEA and associated organic compounds (Watts, 1992a). A wide variety of these PAHs have been identified and some are known carcinogens and/or mutagens. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has proposed new PELs for these and other contaminants (MSHA, 1989). MSHA has also published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking to establish a separate PEL for diesel particulate (MSHA, 1992)."

In the Bureau of Mines investigations of respiratory apparatus, a laboratory study of dust respirators has been conducted, and the results will be published in detail as a technical paper. Many industrial dust respirators, and many fabrics and filtering materials were tested. The principal results of these tests, and the conclusions drawn from them, are presented below. Reference to the patent literature discloses numerous types of dust respirators, mostly based on the filter principle. The present study included only representative filter-type respirators, purchased on the market.

[During the past several years a great deal of discussion has centered around the question of the permissible limit of sulphur content in fuels for automotive and aviation motors. Under certain conditions of operation, sulphur in motor fuels causes the formation of corrosive substances which attach bearings, wrist pins, and other parts of engines. On the other hand, in making gas¬oline from certain stocks, the gasoline fraction normally contains a relatively large proportion of sulphur compounds. By the generally used processes of reducing the sulphur content, a significant part of the gasoline fraction is lost as motor fuel, and added expenses are entailed for chemicals, labor, and other process costs. This condition has been an economic burden to some refiners of high-sulphur crudes. In some instances the treating losses have been rather severe and the treating costs relatively high, but the data presented in this paper indicate that the reduction of sulphur content of motor fuel is a problem to a relatively small number of refiners and of little or no concern to the remainder; in fact, more then 90 per cent of the 153 samples analyzed passed the Federal specification requirement, which limits the sulphur content to 0.10 -nor cent. 3 This report is based upon the results of an examination for sulphur content, Doctor test, copper strip corrosion, and color of the samples collected during January, 1930, for the twenty-first semiannual gasoline survey of the Bureau of Mines. The results of the gravity and distillation tests of the survey were published as Report of Investigations 2995. "INTRODUCTION Preliminary tests of the Oyon coal constituted part of a wartime exploratory and development program in which many agencies participated. The general objective was to find new and adequate source of fuel and other raw materials for greatly expanded industry.The Oyon coal field, known for at least a hundred years to the mining people of Peru, offers a possible source of high-grade process fuel for the growing metallurgical industries of South America and the Pacific coast. Santolalla 4/ reports that low-volatile coal from this region was used in local smelting operations as early as 1850. It has been mined in very small quanti¬ties for many years and used in neighboring mining camps and villages. Small quantities are regularly used at Oroya for the manufacture of carbide, and in recent years small-scale coking operations in specially designed ovens in the region have demonstrated that these coals will make dense coke.During this long period of desultory operations many small openings have been made scattered over a wide area in this general region, indicating very extensive occurrence of the coal measures, although systematic exploration work has not been undertaken. However, current development work of the Banco Minero del Peru has opened up several substantially parallel highly inclined or vertical beds of workable thickness and has followed these deposits to sufficient lateral extent to prove fairly well the existence of substantial reserves on this property."

As part of the goal to maximize minerals and metals recovery from primary domestic resources, design factors associated with minimizing current leakage in bipolar cell configurations were studied by the Bureau of Mines as a means of improving the efficiency of bipolar e1ectrooxidation cells. Initial studies that were conducted in a small bipolar cell operating at 140 to 145 volts and 15.4 amp indicated how design factors could be employed to minimize cur-rent leakage around adjacent electrodes during cell operation. Based on these results, a 40-electrode, 108-kva prototype of an industrial-sized cell was constructed and tested for extracting metal values from offgrade molybdenite concentrates. The feasibility of recovering molybdenum and rhenium from the oxidized pulp also was determined. Feed to the process sequence consisted of flotation concentrates containing 16 to 35 pet Mo as molybdenite and 6 to 15 pct Cu. E1ectrooxidation in the prototype cell resulted in 84 to 97 pct Mo and Re extraction with a corresponding energy consumption of 9 to 13 kwhr/1b Mo extracted.

[Tests were conducted at the Mount Weather testing adit of the Bureau of Mines4/ on the effectiveness of spraying water along the outside of the drill steel as compared with standard wet-drilling practice. The spray equipment used in the tests was designed primarily for the control, in quarries, of dust from dry drilling with solid type drill steel. EQUIPMENT Spray equipment is made in sizes to fit different drill steel but is alike in design, the only difference being in the diameter of the ring and the number of spray holes. The device is made of cast steel and has a coating of Stellite on the inside edge that comes in contact with the drill steel. It looks like a garden spray, except that the spray holes point in only one direction.]

Flame propagation of lower limit hybrid coal dust-methane-air mixtures in vertical and horizontal flame ducts of 15.2 cm id and 1.8 m length has been investigated to provide information bearing on safety in mines. Fuel concentrations at lower limits of flame propagation and equivalences of coal dust and methane are much higher for continuing flame propagation than for short-span flame propagation in the vicinity of an "overdriving" ignition source. As the energy of the ignition source was increased, the flame speed and the distance of flame propagation from the ignition source increased, whereas the total fuel concentration at the lower limit decreased.

"The United States Bureau of Mines is cooperating with the State of Utah and the City of Salt Lake in an investigation of methods of abating the smoke nuisance in Salt Lake City. In the course of this work samples of the atmosphere have been collected and analyzed in an attempt to determine the part played by sulphur dioxide or smelter gases in polluting the air at Salt Lake City.A fairly wide-spread opinion exists in Salt Lake City that the smelters contribute appreciably to the smoke nuisance. The gases discharged from the smelter stacks are believed (1) to float over the city in a heavy blanket which prevents the smoke from rising, and (2) to unite with the water vapor in the air to form corrosive fogs injurious to health and property.The first of these theories seems untenable. If the gas did not mix with air it would sink, owing to its heavier specific gravity, and form a blanket an the earth. Actually, the gas diffuses rapidly in air and any part reaching Salt Take must he thoroughly diluted. Perhaps sulphur dioxide in sufficient concentration might aid in fog formation. The more obvious nuisance, however, would be the injury to health and vegetation.The Garfield smelter is 16 miles west of the city, The Murray smelter 8 miles south, and the Midvale smelter 12 miles south. Under normal operating conditions, a relatively small amount of solid matter is discharged from these stacks. The toxic gaseous constituent of the discharge is sulphur dioxide, it is being discharged from the smelters the year round. If they are a factor in the city's smoke problem, the concentration of this gas in the air of the city should be appreciable and should increase toward the smelters, the con centration being highest with a south or a west wind."

A previous report4 has explained that pipe lines for the transmission of natural gas should be buried to minimize temperature fluctuations because when excessive the latter decrease accuracy in measuring gas volume and increase leakage of gas due to expansion and contraction in the pipe joints. These effects are governed by the rapidity of the temperature fluctuations and by the total variation over a period of time. The temperature of gas flowing through a pipe line depends to a large extent, upon the temperature of the ground adjacent to the pipe; hence, fluctuation of the ground temperatures at various depths determines the economic depth at which pipe lines should be buried. Scope and Purpose of Report This report covers a record of the daily atmospheric temperature fluctuations at Bartlesville, Okla., for 12 months and a-similar concurrent record of the temperature variation 1, 2, 3, and 4 feet below the surface of the ground.

"An investigation of protocols for research performed from 1953 to 1988 on pneumoconioses (with emphasis on diseases related to coal and silica) was conducted in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust. In addition, interviews were conducted with prominent U.S. medical researchers, aerosol scientists and engineers in government, industry, and universities to determine dust sources, dust preparation methods, laboratory protocols, and determinant variables related to in vitro and in vivo research and assess the comparability of results.Since the original report on the protocol project, additional research regarding free radical existence in freshly produced dust particles and the shape and contamination of particles generated for research purposes has further heightened scientists' concerns. As indicated by current research, fresher dust particles and those with more angular shapes may have a different level of reactivity in biological systems than do older or more rounded particles. Therefore, research on dust preparation methods for biomedical studies was undertaken and will be outlined here.Results of protocol review and interviews are summarized. Research on size reduction methods and their particle characteristics plus some recommendations concerning dust preparation methods and reporting in biomedical publications are also presented. Recent evidence indicates that these recommendations may be of importance in comparing and interpreting research results."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments for predicting materials' ease of combustion (smoldering onset, smoldering, flaming, and decomposition rates) by means of submicrometer smoke particle characteristics for the development of a simple test method. The experiments were carried out in an approximately 20-L furnace, with a 10-L/min airflow through the furnace for a 14-min duration, at set furnace temperatures of 150°, 250°, and 1,000° C. The variables studied as a function of time were the onset time of smoke particles, time and duration of maximum smoke particle generation, average concentration of smoke particles, and particles' average diameter, mass weight loss, and furnace temperatures. Results show that the onset time of smoke particles is predictive of materials' ease of smoldering, and the time of maximum smoke particle generation and its duration, coupled with mass weight loss, are predictive of materials' ease of smoldering and flaming (depending on the experimental temperatures), and decomposition rates.

"INTRODUCTION Spodumene and lepidolite were shipped from the Harding pegmatite deposit, Taos County, N. Mex., in the period from 1930 to 1930. Tantalum minerals were noted as early as 1924 and described in 1931 3/ but no tantalum ore was shipped until 1942. The deposit was mapped and studied by geologists of the Federal Geological Survey and engineers of the Bureau of Mines late in 1942 and early in 1943, and a Bureau of Minus exploratory project was carried out in 1943. 4/ Thu following report presents the results of that project.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Minos has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greates possible contribution to national security and economy. In studying the chemistry of lubricating-oil fractions from so-called ?paraffin-base? crudes, one of the first requisites is a method for the separation and removal of waxy material. A method utilizing solvents for this purpose is described in this report, together with preliminary experiments with solvents that led to its development. The solvents actually used are secondary butyl alcohol, acetone, and mixtures of these.. Isopropyl alcohol was also studied. Preliminary Experiments In previous work on "intermediate-base" crude oil, following the work of Wyant and Marsh acetone had been used for laboratory separations of oil and wax. Then acetone was tried for the separation of the waxes and oils of "paraffin-base" crude, the volume of acetone required (80 parts to 1 part of oil) was found to be too great for large-scale work. For this reason the effectiveness of other solvents was studied; the separation by acetone, however, was used as a standard.

"INTRODUCTION The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines has used the wagon drill to sample mineral deposits in New Mexico. This method of sampling was successful and con¬stituted an important phase of the work on five exploratory projects undertaken in 1943, 1944, and 1945. The deposits varied in topographic features, geology, mineral content, and in the physical characteristics of the rocks drilled. The altitudes ranged from 630 to 7,800 feet. Three hundred and seventeen holes totaling 6,852 feet were drilled. The deepest hole was 66 feet; the average depth was a little less than 22 feet.The results of the above-mentioned work form the basis of this report. Special attention is given to the later and more improved techniques used. This report was written with the expectation that the procedures might prove advantageous to others in the exploration and sampling of near-surface mineral de¬posits, and that a more extended use of the technique might result.AcknowledgmentsAcknowledgment is due Charles H. In 2005, a total of 4,490 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Stone mines comprised 30.6% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,039; 45.4%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Of all states, Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=379; 8.4%).

The mine and mill of the Davis-Dunkirk Lines, Inc., are about 16 miles by road south of Prescott, Ariz., which is the nearest railroad point for receiving mine and mill supplies and for shipping concentrates to smelters. A good trucking road reaches within 2 miles off the property, but from that point the grade is very steep. Outgoing loads are limited to 2 tons. The topography near the mine is exceedingly rugged, and the area is slightly wooded. The climate is mild excepting in a few winter months, when the snowfall is heavy. Electric power is secured by way of a 4 1/2-mile, high-tension line connecting with the main line of the Arizona Power Co. The concentrator was intended to treat 60 tons or more daily of gold-silver-copper ore and make a single gold-silver-copper concentrate for shipment to a copper smelter.

Extraction of molybdenum from molybdenite ore by an electrolytic oxidation procedure was investigated by the Bureau o f Mines. Various parameters affecting molybdenum extraction, such as salt concentration, temperature, treatment rate, current density, and particle size, were studied. Molybdenum extraction of 95.2 percent was achieved on a laboratory scale from an ore containing 0.35 percent molybdenite. Corresponding power consumption was 24 kwhr per pound of molybdenum extracted with a base consumption of 4.5 pounds of sodium carbonate. Laboratory and pilot plant experiments are in progress on low-grade molybdenum concentrates containing rhenium and copper. Preliminary results indicate that molybdenum extractions in the 90- to 99-percent range and rhenium extractions of 93 to 99 percent can he obtained without appreciable oxidation of associated copper minerals.

In 1925 the Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co., after several years of experimental work, installed a system for signalling from cages which has been operating efficiently and with low upkeep costs for the post 19 years. The system was adopted for a large western metal mine but was later abandoned be arse of the constantly shifting shaft alinement. Recently the system has been studied and probably will be put into service at two other large mines. One of the principal reasons wry the system has not boon adopted more widely has been the lack of adequate details both as to the desirability of having such a system and as to its construction and operation. Previous signaling, systems contained undesirable features, such as charged bare wires extending the full length of the shaft. Under the direction of O. N. Friendly, then general superintendent of the Judge Mining & Smelting Co., the present system, entailing the use of a samll current at low voltage, was gradually developed. Many of the refinements in the system wore contributed by Leonard Wilson, consulting electrical engineer, Salt Lake City, Utah.

In 1986 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 2 acre North Sisters Rocks Wilderness Study Area (OR-12-8) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is located in Curry County, Oregon, about 15 miles north from Gold Beach. No mines, prospects, or mining claims were located inside the study area, and no mineral resources were identified. Stone from the study area could be quarried and used for construction purposes; however, two nearby quarries have sufficient stone to satisfy local construction needs. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and mineral resource potential of the North Sisters Rocks WSA (Wilderness Study Area) 1/ at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the North Sisters Rocks WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.
