On January 1, 1959, the United States had 313 petroleum refineries with a total installed crude-oil throughput capacity of 9,819,846 barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents a net decreased of five in the number of slants mild a net increase in capacity of 412,139 barrels per day. The continued increase in total capacity and decrease in number of plants raised the average capacity of a refinery to a new high of 31,373 barrels per day. During 1958 total capacity increased in every refining district except the Louisiana Gulf district, which showed a 2-percent decrease due mainly to the retirement of the American Oil Company's plant at Destrehan, La. The largest increase, 14 percent, occurred in the Texas Inland district followed by a 12-percent increase in the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland district. At the beginning of 1959 the industry was building facilities that would add 108,400 barrels per day to crude-oil capacity. It also had under construction a capacity of 226,100 barrels per day as replacement. On January 1, 1959, no new refineries were under construction.

Research by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated that organic heavy liquid adhering to or adsorbed on fine mineral particles can be effectively removed by a novel method embracing pulping or displacement washing with hot water alone or in combination with a detergent. Displacement washing with steam alone or in combination with a detergent also was effective for removing the heavy liquid. In tests of sized minus 48-plus 200-mesh mineral charges, both the hot water washing with detergents and detergent steaming effectively reduced the heavy liquid losses on the particles to about 0.2 pound per ton of mineral or less. Centrifuging of the wash solutions permitted an almost complete recovery of heavy liquid from the solution as a pure heavy liquid product.

The lowest number of fatalities from coal-mine explosions in the United States in any year since records have been kept was the total of 8 in 1949 and again in 1950. Even incomplete records as far back as 1870 reveal a larger annual loss of life from explosions. From 1890 to 1948 the lowest annual loss was 32 in 1946. A smaller total of 15 fatalities was reported in 1952. Figure 1 shows the total yearly loss of life from explosions in all coal mines since 1880. Those in anthracite mines alone are shown by the shaded area. The erratic variation of the chart line shows the difficulties that have confronted the industry in the struggle to control and eliminate mine explosions. Potential hazards have existed in marry mines without realization that only a small change in conditions could initiate a disaster. Many disasters causing great loss of life occurred in mines that had been regularly operated without incident for long periods. Although the number of coal-mine explosions causing great lose of life has been kept down in recent years, the exceptions still make the record anything but satis¬factory. There have been almost no widespread explosions for several years, but in a few instances many lives were lost from afterdamp. Although the violence and spread of mine explosions may be controlled, the loss of life may be heavy if many of the men happen to be in the path of the smoke and gases. For these reasons, the strictest controls must be maintained to eliminate all factors that might combine to cause even a small ignition of gas or dust.

CADMIUM is one of the metals apparently destined to remain relatively scarce. The en tire supply of primary cadmium is recovered as a byproduct, concurrently with the treatment of ores of other metals. Development of the cadmium industry is attributed to metallurgical improvements in the zinc industry; output depends almost wholly upon zinc production. Cadmium is a metal of specialized uses where its superior performance has developed a strong, expanding demand. The supply, however, has been relatively unresponsive to price because of its byproduct nature. Cadmium's outstanding properties would assure it a manyfold greater market if more were available at lower prices.

"INTRODUCTION The San Antonio Canyon prospect was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943 and again in October 1944. In July 1944, the United States Geological Survey mapped the prospect and submitted a report 4/ recommending core drilling by the Bureau of Mines. The drilling project, which was supervised by the author, was started on January 10 and completed on May 10, 1946.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The, large volumes of low A. P. I. gravity oil that will remain in many shallow fields of California when such oils no longer can be recovered profitably by pumping are important potential sources of oil when ways and means are found to remove them from the reservoir sands. Estimated ultimate oil recoveries in many of the "low-gravity fields" of the San Joaquin Valley in California indicate that less than 25 percent (on the average) of the original oil will be recovered. These oils have viscosities of 1,000 or more centipoises at reservoir temperatures and, because of their high viscosity and low intensity of the reservoir pressure, the quantities that will be retained in the sands ultimately are so large and their recovery is such a challenge to petroleum engineers that the Bureau of Mines has made the study of their possible recovery one of its major projects. The fact that a slight increase of temperature materially reduces the viscosity of low A. P. I. gravity oils has 'prompted the use of various means for increasing the temperature of the oil in the reservoir sands and hence the rate of flow and Completeness of recovery of the oil. Hot oil, hot water, heated air, and natural gas, steam, super-heated steam, and the products of combustion have been circulated in wells to raise the temperature of the oil it the sands; electric heaters have been installed in wells, and butane and air have been intermittently exploded and the flames propagated through the tubing to the "pay" zones. None of the methods, however, have been entirely satisfactory for the recovery of large quantities of oil.

The motor gasoline which is being marketed in the United States this summer is apparently more volatile than the gasoline sold a year ago. In fact the average volatility of this summer's gasoline is almost the same as the average volatility of the gasoline marketed last winter. During the past seven years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the fourteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

Stockpiles containing 2.3 million tons of lignite constructed in the period 1948-56 in conjunction with the construction of Garrison Dam on the Missouri River demonstrate successful stable long-term storage of lignite. Uniform and thorough compaction of each of the I-foot-thick layers by which the piles were constructed produced a bulk density of 70 Ib/cu ft. Air penetration into the stockpiles was restricted to a degree that prevents spontaneous heating or deterioration of the stored lignite, A continuing record of observations beginning with stockpiling operations in 1948 has been accumulated, This includes periodic fuel analysis, analysis of pile gases, and measurement of pile temperatures on the first large stock-pile, pile 5. This report describes the stockpiling method, the changes in heating value, pile gas composition, and pile temperature and summarizes observations from 1953 to 1964, Data accumulated attest to the stability of the stored lignite. The variation of the average heating value of periodic pile-depth samples is only 160 Btu/lb (11,990 to 11,830) on the moisture" and ash-free (maf) basis during almost 10 years of storage. Temperature levels of the pile interior are progressively decreasing. At pile surface, cyclic variations occur with the season. The only problem encountered with the large stockpiles is wind and water erosion of the pile surface. The partially successful control measures used are described.

This report summarizes all relevant findings and conclusions regarding capabillty of high-energy projectile impact to operate effectively in an open pit mining environment and to successfully handle secondary breakage and bench scaling problems. A silenced, aimable, mobile projectile launcher was designed and fabricated, utilizing a Government-furnished smooth-bore, 90 mm cannon. The silenced launcher was tested at the contractor's test site prior to shipment to ANAMAX Mining Company's Twin Buttes Mine near Tucson, Arizona. Demonstration tests were conducted at an inactive waste dump in the mine on 39 oversize boulders to determine the relationship between boulder size and projectile energy required for secondary breakage. The high energy projectile impact method (known by the acronym REAM -Rapid Excavation and Mining) was tested on an additional 23 boulders in the working mine and on 31 areas of potentially loose rock high on the pit walls. Most of the secondary breakage tests were successful and acceptable for open-pit mining purposes without producing large amounts of fly rock. Five of the 31 scaling tests were successful with one shot, but most of the remainder required two or more shots, and a few could not be dislodged because they were not as loose as they appeared to be, based on visual examination from a distance. Cost comparisons between the REAM method and conventional methods of secondary breakage and bench scaling are discussed. A film documentary, REAM--Mining Applications of High Energy Projectile Impact, has been produced by the contractor depicting the applications of the silenced cannon.

"INTRODUCTION The general program of the investigation of coal mine drainage which the Bureau of Mines is making includes, among its many phases and objectives, a study of the fate of the acid, content of drainage after it enters natural streams, and the effect of seasonal variations on the degree of contamination of streams. Opportunity for studying these under comparatively normal conditions and variations can readily be found, but there is only a chance opportunity for studying than under extreme conditions. The unusual drought that prevailed during the summer of 1930, however, created a condition of low water favorable to a study of one of the extremes.This report gives the results of an investigation of Bennett Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek, Pa., made under this condition.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis work was conducted under the direction, and with the advice, of Dr. R. "INTRODUCTION As a part of its program of promoting safety in mining and other industries, the Bureau of Mines investigates the explosion hazards of combustible Gases, vapors, and solids. It also investigates various means and methods of controlling and mitigating explosions.Dichlorodifluoromethane, CC12F2, has been found to be very efficient as a quenching agent for methane flames. 4/ This substance is a gas at ordinary temperatures and pressures and is relatively nontoxic and stable at mod rate temperatures.Tremendous quantities of dichlorodifluoromethane were used daring the late war as an expelling agent for aerosol mixtures in ""aerosol bombs."" At one time during the war the demand for Dichlorodifluoromethane became so gent that there was barely enough of it to supply the Army and Navy and virtually none for civilian needs. During this period of scarcity the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Bureau of Entomology, Department of Agriculture, investigated the possibility of substituting other materials in part for the dichlorodifluoromethane. It was required that the resulting mixtures be satisfactory expellant and noninflammable under all normal conditions of use."

Eleven are gelatinous, 56 are the granular type, and four are water-gel explosives, an entirely new type of ammonium nitrate-based explosive for use in coal mines. The list of permissible blasting devices comprises five Cardox models.

Coarse sand flotation, both alone and in conjunction with gravity concentration, is a subject of research at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Field Office, Moscow, Idaho. One of the most important results of this work which is being carried out in cooperation with the University of Idaho, has been the development of a concentration process embodying flotation, classification, and tabling, in the order named. The flow sheet of the process is given in Figure 1. The type of feed desired for this process is coarser than is common in present "all flotation" practice, and is about the size of table feed.

The Bohemia district, situated about 30 miles southeast of Cottage Grove, Oreg., in the Calapooia Range, has been the major producer of lead and zinc in Oregon. Sporadic production has been Maintained from the district since its early discovery about 1858. In 1942, a selective-flotation mill was built at the Champien mine, which operated for only a short time and was forced to close because of the war and lack of labor. The Champion mill reportedly has been operated as a custom mill for the treatment of ore from the Musick and Helena mines, located in the district sometime in the past. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on ore samples from the Musick and Helena Mines.

This study was undertaken to make a comparison between the cost of mining coal under roof bolt and under conventional timber methods of roof support. Studies were made at 14 mines in Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern and southern West Virginia. At each mine data were obtained for sections of the mine where the physical conditions, mining equipment, and mining systems were similar. Coal, recognized as one of the basic industrial fuels, is very competitive with other fuels, and management, in order to protect and enlarge its market, must be continually alert to find more efficient methods of production. Continuous production of coal is desired by all operators but never obtained. In mechanized mining the performance and production vary with operating time, which can be interrupted by many variable factors, such as condition of the roof, method of roof support, condition of equipment, water, ventilation, power, transportation, efficiency of operating crew, and supervision.

The material published in this report is part of a special study of some of the chemical and physical properties of Alabama coals. The complete study included friability and grindability determinations, high and low temperature assay distillation tests, and ash fusion-temperature determinations. Proximate and ultimate analyses and. calorific values of the coal samples also were obtained. This paper is concerned only with grindabilities, although proximate analyses have been included to give a better picture of the problem as a whole. The growing interest in grindabilities of coals is a result of the increase in use of pulverized fuel in REscent years. The tenative ball-mill grindability method D409-35T4/was used in making all the determinations. The method of sampling and the technic of the testing procedure is described in Considerable detail in this report because the procedure was established quite recently. The ball-Mill grindability index is a measure of the ease with which coal may be ground, which may be an important factor in estimating pulverizing costs. Up to the present time few data on the grindability of Alabama coals have been published. The data in this paper show that the Warrior and Cahaba fields exhibit a wide range of grindability in their coals. The mines tested are well distributed throughout the productive areas of these fields, and it is possible to make rough estimates of the grindabilities of coals not listed in this report from the data given for mines situated in the same vicinity. In August 1943 the Bureau of Mines began an investigation of the West Portal magnetite mines, which comprise the Swayze and Turkey Hill properties. The work included (1) traversing with a dip needle to record magnetic anomalies, (2) diamond drilling, and (3) sampling old mine dumps; it was completed in April 1944. The deposit consists of two parallel veins, which strike northeast and dip southeast. They carry magnetite in gneiss and schist. The Swayze mine was discovered in 1867 and closed in 1889, while the Turkey Hill mine was opened in 1872 and closed in 1887. The dip-needle survey covered 266 acres. The diamond drilling comprised 11 holes totaling 4,910 feet from which 142 samples were taken for chemical analyses. Old mine dumps were sampled at 52 points for chemical and magnetic analyses.

The purpose of this publication is to describe the power-distribution system of the mine and refinery of the Duval Sulphur & Potash Company at Carlsbad, N. Mex. This distribution system has been excellently predesigned to meet requirements and fit special conditions encountered at the property. In presenting the material, the authors point out various features that would be desirable for incorporation in other systems under similar conditions. Central location of switchgear in pressurized vaults and ventilation of such equipment with filtered air prevent salt accumulations and contribute to trouble-free operation. The simplification of power-distribution circuits and overload protection, as a result of centralization of switchgear, the use of individual control circuits enclosed in conduit (which aids troubleshooting), and central location of control panels, are factors which contribute to efficient, safe operation. Those features are applicable to many operations where fire or explosion hazards are encountered, or where dusty conditions may exist, as well as in operations where numerous individual drives are involved.
