This report relates to the sulfur industry of seven States--Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas--and is part of a national study of the sulfur industry by the Bureau of Mines. Markets as used 1n this report are divided into two components for individual analysis--(1) supplier markets which include regional Frasch and byproduct sulfur producers and (2) consumer markets which include processors and manufacturers requiring sulfur in their operations. The term sulfur as used in this report includes brimstone, native sulfur, elemental sulfur, or sulfur equivalents.

The Mateen deposit comprises two large spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes that outcrop along the, side and crest of a hill overlooking 'Rill City in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Mateen deposit as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the small productive capacity of the industry. During the course of the investigation, the Bureau of Mines took 61 large channel samples from surface trenches, 4 channel samples from a shaft, and 3 from the face of an open cut. In addition, 8 diamond core-drill holes were completed to investigate the attitude of one of the dikes at depth. Metallurgical tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of beneficiating spodumene-bearing ores from the Mateen dikes.

Pneumatic conveying of coal underground is not widely used in the United States, although it is becoming increasingly popular in Great Britain, the Federal Republic of Germany, and South Africa. The question of safety has been raised repeatedly: Will the system be prone to dust or gas explosions, and, if so, can it withstand such occurrences safely? The work reported here was done under a Bureau of Mines contract and deals with the safety aspects of pneumatic transport of underground coal, as well as the hazards inherent in more conventional haulage systems. Included are three designs for different applications of pneumatic haulage: off-loading a continuous-mining machine on a room- and-pillar section, vertical hoisting through a 1,200-ft shaft, and off-loading a tunnel-boring machine driving a 2,000-ft tunnel.

The development and industry adaptation of advanced technologies have led to many important uses for bismuth and its compounds. Bismuth-base alloys are essential for manufacturing jet engine turbine blades, lenses, and various safety devices, such as fire-protection sprinklers. The addition of bismuth to iron, steel, and aluminum imparts properties to these metals that makes them useful in diversified applications. Bismuth is also used widely in medicine, pigments, and electronics. The United States relies heavily upon imports from South America and Europe to meet its demand for bismuth, which is recovered chiefly as a byproduct of lead processing.

For nearly 30 years the Bureau of Mines has contended that mine explosions can be prevented and has pointed out to the industry ways and means by which they could be avoided. The record of co2l-mine explosions • during the past fiscal ?Bar bears out the :Bureau1s contention, inasmuch as fewer men were killed by coal-mi~e e:xplosions in the United States during that year than in :gi_y corresponding 12 months in the history of coal mining in the United States, insofar as records are available; and more than a year has elapsed since·a major explosion (in which five or more men were killed) has occurred, this being t.1-J.e first continuous 12- month period without a major coal-mine explosion disaster in the United States in more than 60 years. The methods of preventing mine e:iiplosions are well known to experienced, well-informed persons cngnged in coal mining. Despite this knowledge, many coal-mine operutors continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in countless explosions, and mine workers persist in following past procedure or in breaking safety rules and practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. ' Virtually all explosions are the result of human failure, such as carelessness or neglect by officials or workers or others. These human failures can be corrected chiefly by ed.ucation and proper and adequate supervision and strict discipline. In some instances mine officials are ·lax, careless, poorl~• informed, and often incompetent; end in many instances miners have repulsed the introduction of known preventive methods because of sheer obstinacy, ignorance, heedlessness, or possibly fear that the operator was trying to o'bta.in some unfair adva.,.'1. tago or would neglect some other phase of accident or e,:plosion prevention. TO ASSIST users in the selection of reliable and satisfactory respiratory protective devices, the Bureau of Mines bas established five schedules of minimum performance requirements for the approval of respirators. The current revisions of these schedules include 130 for self-contained breathing apparatus, 141F for gas masks, 19B and the amendments to 19B for supplied- air respirators, 21B for dust, fume, and .mist respirators, and 23B for chemical cartridge respirators. Copies of these schedules may be obtained from the Bureau of Mines, Publications Distribution Section, 4800 Forbes Avenue, Pitts- burgh, Pa., 15213. Approval tests on respirators are performed only at the request of the manufacturer of the respirator and at his expense. If the deice meets the approval requirements, a certificate of approval is granted on the complete respirator. This certificate states that as long as the respirator is manufactured as originally approved, or in accordance with any changes covered by an extension of the original approval, the manufacturer may advertise and sell his respirator as being approved by the Bureau of Mines. Many industries and regulatory agencies require that respirators approved by the Bureau of Mines he used where respiratory protection is needed. The Bureau of Mines, however, has no regulatory power over the use of the respirators that it approves. It acts as an impartial testing agency to insure the availability of suitable and safe respirators.

This Information Circular describes the development of block-caving methods and practices by the Miami Copper Co. at the Miami mine in Gila County, Arizona. It is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. This report gives a history of the district and outlines early prospecting and exploration including methods of sampling and estimation of ore tonnage and value at the Miami mine. Early mining methods are described, particularly those that influenced developments in the caving method. Mine exploration, development, and operating methods for block caving are described with particular attention to those factors, physical, economic, engineering, and managerial that have improved efficiency in the mining operations over a long productive period. Extraction, ventilation, wage system, safety, water supply, power plant, and shop facilities are discussed. The last section gives a brief summary of such costs as are available for publication.

In 1955 the Federal Bureau of Mines established a low-temperature tar laboratory at its new Appalachian Experiment Station in Morgantown, W. Va. The objective of the laboratory is to investigate the yields and chemical and physical properties of tars from low-temperature carbonization of coal, to investigate means of economically upgrading these tars, and to make available to industry and the public essential data for increasing coal utilization through the establishment of a new coal-chemical industry, based on the utilization of low-temperature tars. Because of the obvious economic significance of phenols, as well as the relative ease with which they can be separated and analyzed, initial research has centered mainly around this class of tar constituents. It was realized early that no listing of phenols and their physical properties existed that included enough compounds to be practicable. The purpose of this paper is to make such a compilation available.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 299 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1972 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Fourteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,902 gas analyses prior to 1972. The radial, vertical, and transverse components of particle velocity were recorded by Bureau of Mines investigators along gage arrays extending in one or two directions for 145 to 3,170 feet at five quarries. Of the 39 quarry blasts, 12 were instantaneous blasts, 5 were of the one hole per delay type, using millisecond delayed caps, and 22 were multiple hole per delay type employing millisecond delay detonating fuse connectors. Charge weight per hole ranged from 8 to 1,500 pounds, and the charge weight per delay interval, including the instantaneous blasts, ranged from 25 to 4,620 pounds.

Since the discovery in 1935 by Adams and Holmes that certain synthetic resins exhibit ion-exchange properties, many applications of the ion-exchange process have been made. There are two general types of ion-exchange resins. Cation exchange resins adsorb cations from solution, and these in turn may be replaced by other cations adsorbed under certain conditions. 'Anion exchange resins adsorb acids from solution, and the anion of the acid may then be replaced by other anions. It is reported, however, that certain anion exchange resins have a low capacity for anions of weak acids without the necessity of acid adsorption either directly or as an intermediate step. The adsorbed ions may then be removed from the resins by elution with an appropriate solution, and the resin is prepared for the next adsorption cycle by regeneration with another solution. Sometimes one solution, is used to simultaneously perform the functions of elution and regeneration. The first and probably the largest application is in the field of water purification. Other applications have been made in the production of high-quality foods for human consumption, in the recovery of valuable substances from solutions, in the separation or fractionation of electrolytes, and in several other fields, each of which has its specific applications, variations, and possibilities. Ion exchange resins also have been highly useful in perfecting techniques of laboratory analysis and research.4/, 5/, 6/

This summary of State laws on explosives was compiled primarily to ascertain what subjects relating to their control have been acted upon by each State legislature and, in general, how they have been treated. It does not include any legislation passed after 1942, or any proclamations, regulations, or administrative orders. It does not purport or attempt to be authoritative. If any problem arises involving interpretation of the statutes of any particular State, the original source must be consulted for the exact words used by the legislature. This summary, however, will be useful in determining whether relevant statutes exist and in locating them quickly, with a minimum of effort. It will be of value also in comparing statutes in one State with similar statutes in other States to determine what construction has been placed upon them by the courts of those jurisdictions or to contrast the varying provisions of many States upon a single subject. This Bureau of Mines report presents results of a detailed study of water usage in the Wyoming mineral industry along with projections for the future In 1964, the mineral industries of Wyoming used 20 billion gallons of new water, nearly all self-supplied, and reused 72 billion gallons, a total usage of 92 billion gallons. Consumption amounted to 2.8 billion gallons. About one-half of the 20 billion gallons of new water was obtained from [srface] sources and the rest from ground water. Reported costs, covering power and maintenance, for the self-supplied new water at mineral industry operations ranged from less than 1 cent to 20 cents per thousand gallons and aver-aged 8 cents. At one mineral-related operation, water was hauled by truck to supplement a well supply. The cost was $2.00 per thousand gallons delivered. However, the supplemental requirement was only 10 gpm. Cost figures for the recirculation of water, covering power and maintenance, averaged 2 cents. In terms of water usage, the value of product for the entire industry was $25 per thousand gallons of new water intake and about $180 per thousand gallons consumed. The study revealed that Wyoming has a water deficiency but that the shortage is less severe than in the arid Southwest. Projection of the water needs of the Wyoming mineral industries indicates that the demand for new water will increase from the 20 billion gallons used in 1964 to 25 billion gallons in 1980, a 25-percent increase. The projected new-water requirement for the year 2000 is 40 billion gallons, a 100-percent increase compared with the 1964 figure.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods and costs being published by the Bureau of Mines. It describes briefly the mining methods employed since the start of operations in 1937, with emphasis on the diamond-drill blast-hole method of ore breaking and slusher-drift method of ore drawing at the Holden mine of the Howe Sound Co., Chelan Division, Holden, Wash. The Holden mine is in the north-central part of the Cascade Range, 11 miles up Railroad Creek from Lake Chelan. The nearest railroad is at Chelan Falls, 40 miles by boat and 4 miles by highway from the mine. All freight comes into the mine and all concentrates are shipped out via Chelan Falls. The altitude of the main haulage level is 3,500 feet. Railroad Creek Valley is covered with a dense growth of fir and spruce, while most of the surrounding mountains are rocky, with sparse timber growth.

"INTRODUCTION The use of black blasting powder as an explosive in coal mines has long been recognized as hazardous and has been responsible for many of the worst disasters in American coal mines. One of the most pressing of the numerous problems confronting the Bureau of Mines, upon its creation in 1910 was to determine methods that would lessen the hazards created by the use of explosives in coal mines. The Bureau continued the study begun by the Technologic Branch of the Geological Survey as to the nature of explosives and made numerous tests to determine types of explosives suitable for blasting in coal mines. The Bureau has tested and approved hundreds of types of explosives and has disseminated information on methods and conditions for use underground to make them permissible as to safety. The Bureau of Mines has encouraged the use of permissible explosives for coal-mine blasting, and its experts both in the laboratory and in the field believe that the use of black blasting powder in any form (granular or pellet) is hazardous in any underground coal mine. Despite the information published at various times and innumerous ways and the general knowledge of the hazards that the use of black blasting powder in any form creates in the blasting of coal, the coal mines in the United States, during 1947 used approximately 34 million pounds of black blasting powder (granular or pellet), or approximately 11.8 percent of the total quantity of explosives used by the coal-mining industry.Many coal mines of the United States, for various and sundry reasons, probably will continue the use of black blasting powder, and this circular has been written for the benefit of such users, not that any suggested method or methods will make the use of this explosive safe, but it has been found that methods and conditions of use of black blasting powder can be improved so as to lessen, though not eliminate, the hazards created by its use."

This report presents the results of a joint Bureau of Mines-U.S. Department of Energy project that evaluated a newly developed low-coal mining system: the 4M miniminer system. The evaluation took place from April through October 1981 and determined potential health, safety, and productivity factors for the mining system using the surface test facilities at Bruceton, PA. The planning, testing, results of testing, and a summary evaluation of the 4M miniminer system are included in the report. The miniminer system was found to be a very good concept with future potential for safe, healthful, and economic production in thin-seam mining. The mining system was also judged to have considerable potential for use in some coal seams that are presently considered unminable by other existing mining equipment. The preproduction, prototype version of the miniminer system that was tested suffered from several safety and production problems. These problems are also described, along with suggested remedies.

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama Power Co., jointly, conducted the first experiment undertaken in the United States in underground gasification of coal in place, at Gorgas, Ala. Milton H. Fies, manager of coal operations, Alabama Power Co., proposed the cooperative investigation to Arno C. Fieldner, chief, Fuels and Explosives Branch, Bureau of Mines; and assisted in supervising the experiment. The objectives of the experiment were to determine whether coal in place could be burned successfully and whether the burning could be controlled; the effect of the fire on the coal bed and the overlying strata; and the yield and quality of gas that could be obtained.
