A computer system for calculating the illumination on coal mine surfaces due to machine-mounted lights is described. Utilizing numerical models of mining machinery and measured data on luminaire output characteristics, the program computes the ft-candle levels incident on the mine entry surfaces for any desired machine/luminaire/ entry configuration. Shadowing effects of the machine are taken into account. Results are provided at 2 ft. intervals on the face, left and right walls, floor and roof. The system operates, interactively from a Tektronix 4014 graphics terminal which handles all input/output functions. The software is installed on a Cyber 74 computer that communicates with the terminal via telephone line.

In spite of advances in measurement techniques and an explosive increase in the volume of research, our understanding of human strength remains in its introductory stages. It is clear that muscle strength is a highly complex and variable function that depends on a large number of factors. It is not surprising, therefore, that large differences in strength exist not only between individuals, but even within the same individual tested repeatedly on a given piece of equipment. The issue is compounded by the fact that correlations of strength among different muscle groups in the same individual are generally low, and tests of isometric strength do not necessarily reflect the strength an individual might exhibit in a dynamic test. As a result of these and other influences, great care needs to be exercised in designing, evaluating, reporting, and interpreting muscular strength assessments. Traditionally, tests of muscular strength were in the domain of the orthopaedist, physical therapist, and exercise physiologist. Such tests are also an important tool for the ergonomist, however, because of the high strength demands on workers in manual materials-handling tasks. In some cases, task demands may approach or even exceed the strength that an individual is voluntarily willing to exert in a test of strength. In such cases, evidence suggests that the likelihood of injury is significantly greater than when the task demands lie well within an individual's strength capacity. Because the relationship among strength capabilities, job demands, and musculoskeletal injury has been established, it is apparent that tests of muscular strength may benefit the ergonomist both in designing jobs and in ensuring that individuals have sufficient strength to safely perform physically demanding jobs. Several strength assessment techniques have been employed for these purposes, each possessing unique characteristics and applicability to job design and worker selection procedures. Our main purpose has been to elucidate these strengths and weaknesses, so that tests of strength may be properly applied in designing jobs and selecting workers. One of the crucial points we have emphasized is that any test of strength used in job design or worker selection must be directly related to the demands of the job.(1) For example, if an occupational lifting task has a high dynamic component, a test of isometric strength is not likely to provide the data necessary for proper design of the job. Of course, dynamic strength tests would also be misapplied in assessing a job requiring isometric exertions. Another potential pitfall is using tests of strength on isolated muscle groups and assuming that they are indicative of whole-body strength. For example, one might mistakenly assume that dynamic trunk extension strength represents a person's capability to perform a lifting task. However, an individual's lifting capacity may be entirely unrelated to trunk extension strength. It may, instead, be limited by an individual's arm or leg strength, depending on the task being performed. A final point on strength assessment should be made. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale experiments to determine whether or not surface waters with a high organic content could be purified sufficiently to be used to replace the natural high-quality deep well water currently being used in the silica flotation step of phosphate rock beneficiation. Waters abundant in organic matter were collected from two central Florida streams, flocculated with a cationic polyethylenimine polymer, and processed in a sand filter. This treatment removed most of the organic materials from the water. Untreated surface water, treated surface water, and distilled water were used to compare the flotation response of the acid insolubles in an amine flotation circuit. Surface water treated with PEI-1000 was shown to be as effective as distilled water for the acid-insoluble-flotation step. Flocculation and filtration can therefore produce water suitable for amine flotation of quartz, which would permit substitution of surface water for deep well water.

This report documents the status of a laser-based underground guidance system for tracking and controlling the movements of underground mobile mining equipment. This research is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to increase mine safety and efficiency by developing technology for computer-assisted mining. Guidance systems, which can track and control the movements of underground mining equipment, are essential during computer-assisted mining operations. A continuous mining machine at the Bureau's surface test facility served as the test-bed for initial development and experimentation of this guidance system. Subsequently, a continuous mining machine in an underground mine served as the platform for in-mine experimentation The first section of this report includes details of the laser sensors, communication network, and computer hardware. The next section includes experimental results, which show the system capable of accurately tracking and controlling the tram maneuvers of a continuous miner underground. The final section discusses conclusions and recommendations.

"INTRODUCTION The major objective of our research is to help reduce the incidence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP). To that end, this project is designed to improve our understanding of the processes that lead to pulmonary dysfunction following mine dust exposure, and how those processes might be interrupted or attenuated. The response of the lung ' to inhaled particles is complex, and the course of development of disabling CWP is slow and unpredictable. From among the numerous cellular and molecular interactions involved in the pulmonary response to inhaled particles, this project is focussed on the role that the pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM) may play in regulating the activity of fibroblasts.The PAM is the lung cell that has the most immediate and the most obvious interaction with inhaled particles. Within a short period after particles are arrested in the alveolus of the lung, they are phagocytized (engulfed) by these specialized cells. The PAM then has a diverse potential repertoire of subsequent activities. Which reaction actually ensues is determined, in large part, by the nature of the phagocytized _particles. Activated PAMs produce a variety of products that may affect adjacent lung tissue, including superoxide free radical, elastase, collagenase, prostaglandins, platelet activating factor, etc. Those may well be important in the pathogenesis of CWP, but they are beyond the scope of this project. Background information that is cogent to this project has come primarily from investigations using animal models of silicosis and asbestosis. PAMs that have ingested silica particles synthesize and release molecules that control the behavior of surrounding cells. One such mediator is interleukin-1 (IL-1), a molecule that plays a central role in many aspects of the response to injury. It can stimulate fibroblasts (the cells that help to hold tissues together) to release the enzyme collagenase, resulting in breakdown of the structural collagen fibers that support the lung tissue. IL-1 also stimulates fibroblasts to undergo mitosis and to proliferate, which is an initial stage of fibrosis. Certain stimulants cause PAMs to release fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) that are distinct- from IL-1. Under other circumstances activated PAMs synthesize and release molecules that stimulate fibroblasts to accelerate synthesis of collagen fibers, thus contributing to fibrosis. Although these observations provide a valuable precedent for analysis of the mechanisms involved in CWP, their relevance to CWP cannot be assumed since most of those studies involved macrophages or fibroblasts obtained from tissues other than the lung, and because almost none of them have used CMD as the stimulating particles. Therefore, the goal of this project is to learn how exposure to CMD affects the behavior of PAMs, and in turn how products of dust-exposed PAMs affect fibroblasts and the process of fibrosis in the lung."

The local geology, the lack of recorded mining activity, and our field investigation and associated sampling indicate a low potential for mineral resources. Claim records and the literature review failed to show any lode or heavy mineral placer mining claim locations that are definitely in the area or anomalous mineral concentrations in the study area. Field investigations revealed no claims, prospects, or mineralized areas.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 24,600-acre Orejana Canyon Wilderness Study Area (OR-001-078), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area, located in Harney County, 76 mi northeast of Lakeview, OR, is underlain by Miocene basalt, rhyolite flows, tuffs, and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. No mines, prospects, or claims were found within the study area. According to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the tuffaceous rocks have a moderate favorability for the occurrence of diatomite and a low favorability for zeolite resources. Also, the rhyolite flows have a low favorability for the occurrence of perlite resources. However, U.S. Bureau of Mines' studies indicate that no metallic or nonmetallic resources are present in the study area.

The tungsten properties of Lincoln Mines, Inc., and North Tem Piute Mining and Development Co. were first explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Work on the project comprised trenching, sampling, a small amount of road and trail construction, and a small amount of core drilling. From April 13 to December 10, 1944, additional diamond drilling was done by the Bureau of Mines to test the lateral and downward extensions of the various tactite zones along the contact south of the Lincoln mine, including the property of the North Tem Piute Mining & Development Co. Claims leased by the Lincoln Mites, Inc., are in secs. 25 and 36, T. 3 S., R. 56 E.; secs. 30 and 31, T. 3 S., R. 57' E.; and sec. 1, T. 4 S., 56 E., M. D. Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. Latin America and Canada have a rich and diversified endowment of mineral fuels, metals, and industrial minerals. Tables 1 and 2 provide a summary view of Latin America and Canada's output of its major mineral commodities in world mineral supply in 1990 and 1991. Table 3 shows the relative importance of a selected group of minerals produced in Latin America in the world mineral economy.

"Magnetic surveys made by the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines in 931 and 1932 disclosed a large positive anomaly about a mile south of Bourbon, Mo. 3/ Electrical resistivity measurements made by the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Bureau of Mines in the winter of 1942-43 indicated that the source of this anomaly was in the pre-Cambrian rhyolite at a depth of more than 1,400 feet. 4/In order to determine the character of the material that caused the magnetic anomaly, which might be either a body of magnetite or a large intrusive of basic rock, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes to depths of 1,800 to 2,300 feet. Magnetite in rhyolite porphyry was encountered at 1,600 to 2,000 feet, and this is doubtless the main source of the magnetic anomaly, although it is possible that additional iron ore exists at greater depth.Hole 1 was apparently located southeast of the source of the anomaly and encountered only small stringers of magnetite. Hole 2 penetrated four mineralized zones having a total thickness of 125.7 feet and an average weighted content of 43.52 percent iron and 31.62 percent silica. These zones were tested again by a deflection hole, 2A, which gave nearly identical indications. Hole 3, 500 feet north of hole 2, penetrated 58 foot of mineralized rhyolito containing an average 43.4 percent iron.Metallurgical tests showed that the silica in the ore is tightly locked with the magnetite. After grinding to minus 100 mesh, a 66 percent iron con¬centrate with 7 percent silica was obtained by flotation."

"INTRODUCTION The relative value of the various individual physical and chemical properties of coke as a measure of its performance in the blast furnace as aroused considerable controversy but it is generally agreed that uniformity in these properties is extremely important if maximum mum pip-iron production is to be attained. The control of,the bulk density or weight per cubic feet of the coal charge in the coke ovens is a major, and frequently overlooked, factor in producing a uniform product and in efficient operation of the coke plant.This report presents a brief discussion of the general problem of bulk-density control and the results of tests on samples of coke-oven charges from several operating plants experiencing difficulties due to lack of adequate control. These tests covered the effect of moisture and oil content on the bulk density of the coal. Some tests on the effect of a wetting agent and furnenous of gained were also made. A description of the methods used to determine the bulk density of the coals studied in this investigation and of the methods used to apply oil to the coal at byproduct-coke plants are included in this product. No theoretical analysis of the data presented in this report, because the primary purpose of the investigation was to obtain data of immediate practical value to the plants concerned."

This study assesses whether Narragansett Basin coal deposits could be developed commercially in the near future. To do this, we identify the potential market for the coal, assess the price these users would be willing to pay for Narragansett coal, and this price to the expected costs of producing Narragansett coal. The study concludes that the major market, New England utilities, could burn bituminous coal from Pennsylvania or West Virginia at a lower total cost than Narragansett Basin coal, assuming expected mining conditions and emission policies. Therefore, the study concludes that Narragansett Basin coal resources could not be developed economically in the next ten years.

This publication has been prepared to supply manufacturers and industrial users a listing of mobile diesel-powered equipment and subassemblies approved and certified by the Bureau of Mines for use in noncoal mines. Testing of diesel-powered equipment is one phase of the Bureau's program of health and safety that concerns approval of electrical and diesel equipment designed to prevent explosions, fires, shocks, or toxic hazards in underground mines, when such equipment is used and maintained properly. Manufacturers submit machinery and component parts to the Bureau for study of their design, safety features, and use. Equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and listed in the Bureau's permissible schedules before the Bureau approves it as permissible for safe use in mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the three subunits (fig. 1) of the Homestead RARE II area (No. 6291) revealed no evidence of mining activity or mineral deposits in the area. The Iron Dyke Mine, 3 mi (5 km) outside the study area produced ore between 1916 and early 1982 from a volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit in the Permian volcaniclastic Hunsaker Creek Formation of the Seven Devils Group. The Hunsaker Creek Formation does not crop out in the RARE II area, but extends into the area beneath Miocene flows of Columbia River Basalt. The abundant basalt in the area could be used as aggregate or dimension stone, but equivalent deposits exist closer to markets. INTRODUCTION Location and Access The Homestead RARE II area (fig. 1) encompasses 6260 net acres (253U ha), in three units, of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in Baker and Wallowa Counties, Oregon. Two small units of 160 and 300 acres (65 and 120 ha) are 5 mi (8 km) north and east of the main study area. Homestead, Oregon, on the Snake River, is about 3 mi (4 km) south of the two small areas, and about 3 mi (4 km) northeast of the main study area. Peripheral access is provided by State Highway 86, U.S. Forest Service Road 39, and ancillary roads and trails.

Preliminary experiments are reported utilizing bacteria to leach manganese from a variety of domestic low grade manganiferous materials. In two large leaches manganese extraction ranged from 71.7 to 92.5 percent, and the products analyzed over 48 percent manganese. Nutrient requirements and leaching time experiments were made. The mechanism of leaching is not understood, but is different than the mechanism encountered in the microorganism accelerated leaching of copper in the presence of sulfide minerals.
