"Water availability and water-related environmental impacts are now one of the most significant challenges facing primary production within the global minerals industry. Whereas the industry has, to a large degree, been able to demonstrate a collective response to greenhouse gas emissions and global energy demand, no such strategy exists for water. In part, this is because water quality and availability are regional issues, but also too because water quality cannot be defined by a single attribute, and extrapolation of any set of water quality indices to their associated environmental impact is no trivial matter. In design situations specifically, the situation is exacerbated by the fact that process engineers typically focus on site water management, and consent authorities are primarily in catchment level issues. As a result, an integrated approach to water management is difficult. This does not stem from an unwillingness by members of the professional team to engage with the total picture of water quality and availability, but principally from the fact that there is no common language through which to approach the problem.It is imperative for process engineers to extend their design system boundary, to reflect the geographic scales over which water impacts need to be quantified. It is not suggested that chemical engineers and metallurgists should become experts in geochemistry, hydrology and limnology. Rather, the challenge is to develop tools through which better communication of the relevant environmental impacts can be achieved.It has been estimated that 50% of the capital for new plants is devoted to handling wastes. The integration of mass exchange processes, adopting a life cycle analysis framework for considering environmental impacts and shifting the emphasis from effluent concentration to environmental impacts should be adopted in the framing of the design problem have been suggested as techniques of Environmentally Conscious Design. Shifting the focus from effluent concentrations and legislative requirements to evaluating the environmental impact is an important step towards improving the overall environmental performance of a process facility."

The biggest environmental challenge in mining is the management of mine tailings. Deep----sea tailings placement (DTSP) is practiced where the environmental impacts are predicted to be less than the impacts of tailings storage facilities on land. However, DSTP is often highly controversial owing to the challenges in assessing the impacts in deep water environments and potential long----term impacts beyond the proposed tailings footprint. It is well recognized that total contaminant concentrations are often poor predictors of the risk posed by contaminants in sediments. Metals within tailings are mostly present in highly mineralised forms that are typically much less bioavailable to organisms when compared to other common anthropogenic metals. Thus while metal concentrations in tailings can often appear alarmingly high, when compared to sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) used for assessing common urban and industrial impacts, the bioavailability is typically low. Although now well----embedded within risk----based sediment quality assessment frameworks, contaminant bioavailability is still often overlooked in the management of contaminated sediments. In this presentation, we assess and demonstrate the low bioavailability and chronic ecotoxicology of mineral----rich tailings to two benthic invertebrates, recognized for their sensitivity to metals: impairment of reproduction of the amphipod, Melita plumulosa, and the harpacticoid copepod, Nitocra spinipes. We demonstrate that the metal exposure from mine tailings is low when total concentrations are considered, and that the dose to the organism and toxic response observed is highly dependent on contaminant bioavailability. We discuss a range of approaches for the effective incorporation of metal bioavailability when applying SQGs or setting site-specific management limits for mine tailings in marine environments. While proposed DSTP operations require a high level of environmental scrutiny and monitoring during operation and post-closure, environmentally sustainable operations may be achieved when the bioavailable forms of metals within tailings remain below suitable management limits.

"An environmentally clean and virtually waste-less technology for treatment of domestic and industrial solid waste (HGIW) including other toxic chloride-containing materials has been developed and proven on a full scale by the Gintsvetmet Institute in cooperation with some other Russian organizations.The essence of the process is that the HGIW are decomposing in the liquid base in air-bed slag melted layer under the temperature of 1350-1400°C.HGIW is considered as fuel heat-producing energy of 1500-1800 kCal/kg with 51,7%.Processing of municipal and industrial solid waste in molten slag is carried out autogenously without additional fuel, the blowing is enriched by oxygen up to 50-70%.The complex makes it possible to treat the furnace charge without preliminary drying and sorting with big differences in chemical and morphological composition due to the versatile firing chamber.The proposed process resolves the acute and globally significant problem of dioxin formation.The purpose of the proposed technology is to ensure such destruction of the structural lattice that would guarantee irreversible transformation of the resultant substances to prevent formation of dioxins. It was established the required preconditions to achieve this purpose."

"In general, the processing of glass sand may involve comminution, washing, wet classification and attrition scrubbing. Additional processes may include magnetic separation, flotation and leaching in various combinations.Yaliköy sand dune deposit is located near to Istanbul on the European side by the Black Sea coast. The reserve of deposit is around 70 million tons. Iron content of Yaliköy sand dunes is 0.48 % Fe2O3 and not suitable for glass manufacture. The iron content of glass sand should be less than 0.15 % Fe2O3 for window glass manufacture and 0.05 % Fe2O3 for glassware. In this study, it was aimed to produce glass sand with less than 0.15 % Fe2O3 for window glass and with less than 0.05% Fe2O3 for glassware manufacture from Yaliköy sand dunes. A representative sample with a weight of 200 kg was taken from Yaliköy sand dunes deposit through opening small pits.• Mineralogical studies have shown that iron is present in three forms:• Hematite, limonite, clay and iron silicate minerals such as epidote and garnet occur in free form.• Quartz grains are coated by hematite and limonite.• Iron is also present in the cracks of quartz grains.Free iron minerals such as hematite and limonite and silicate minerals were subjected to magnetic separation and flotation for removal. Iron coatings were tried to be removed by scrubbing and leaching. Iron removal in the cracks of quartz grains was attempted by grinding and leaching.Under optimal conditions, sand concentrate with 0.38 % Fe2O3 was obtained by means of high intensity disc type magnetic separation. Grinding and scrubbing were applied to see the effect of size reduction and attrition at room temperature and 90 ºC, by using non-magnetic fraction. Sand concentrate with 0.13% Fe2O3 was obtained at 90 ºC in this test.Sand sample which was previously ground to minus 0.5 mm and scrubbed, was floated by using sulphonates as collector. After flotation tests, sand Concentrate was obtained with 0.11 % Fe2O3.The optimum iron removal was achieved by H2SO4 leaching at 90 ºC depending on acid concentration and leach duration in static, percolation and agitation leaching. Agitation leaching was done by the use of mixer at 600 rpm, 50% solids and leach duration was 15 minutes."

"A number of metal supplying industries have in recent years seen the compilation of life cycle inventories (LCIs) and life cycle assessments (LCAs). The activity has largely been driven by the interest of ultimate metal users, such as the automotive industry, in the interest of designing more sustainable products. Often, the compilation of such inventories has been little more than an auditing exercise. However, the process of conducting an LCA can have more value, guiding designers and operators to points within the technology train where significant emissions and impacts originate. The LCA product can thus be used to inform on-site environmental management, and, where process data is used to construct dynamic operational models, to support strategic decision making in the realm of project planning and technology selection. LCA thus serves as a valuable tool to support the industry’s drive to support the sustainable development of the societies in which it operates.This paper reviews and compares the priorities of environmental and closure planning in the design phase, with environmental management and auditing during operation, and with green procurement of minerals and metals products. It shows how life cycle assessments of various complexities can be used to reconcile these various objectives, ensuring that the latter, critical to business success, can be addressed from the outset in a new project. The paper then reviews a case study of the use of LCA in the base & precious metals industry, where the complexity of the operation disallowed the simpler auditing process so that a detailed process understanding had to be built up in order to compile a meaningful life cycle inventory."

"Conceptual imitative dynamic model of developing enterprises for medium and long-term period permitting to ensure coordination of interests of the enterprise and territorial environmental authorities has been developed to enable the process of the prognostication and management of a concentrating mill development, in which a symbol language and terminology familiar to the manager of the company are applied. An algorithm of practical application of this model of company development was elaborated as well as a general methodological approach to the prognostication of the development and procedures of its implementation. The general methodological approach to the implementation of the model has been defined. Within the framework of system approach, a concentrating mill is considered as a subsystem of an ore mining and processing company or a mining and smelting one. A concentrating technology is considered in dynamics, its change is determined by the task of making the company operation profitable. Technological indicators are secondary relative to financial and economical indexes. At the same time, technological and economical indexes are determined in their interrelation with ecological parameters. The elaborated model allows us to estimate all necessary economic, financial and technological indexes in their interrelation both for the company as a whole and as separately redistributed estimating the basic prognostication documents - accounting balance-sheet, profit and loss report, as well as the funds flow statement. When varying the managing parameters, all necessary result-producing financial and economical indexes are estimated and a need in and a possibility of an external funding by various sources are considered.The implementation of the model enables one to determine the required scale of production capacity, as well as the amount of raw-material resources needed. In case of shortages of the latter, there should be considered various scenarios of the production capacity enhancement or the possibility of commissioning of new sites or deposits and introduction of improved technologies."

From the point of view of industrial performance of metal extraction, the efficiency of a column leaching operation depends strongly on the leaching agent and the ore properties such as mineral composition, mineral liberation and particle size distribution. One aspect that has become particularly important is how the leaching solution flows through the porous structure which contains the valuable minerals. It is known that the output flow rate of leaching solution depends mainly on factors of the input flow, environmental condition and porous bed properties. The latter factor is often evaluated and reported under saturated conditions but in practical leaching systems unsaturated conditions are dominant. This investigation has the purpose of determining the residence time of the leaching solution in columns with different diameters under unsaturated conditions by using experimental data and numerical simulations. Laboratory leach test were performed using isothermal jacketed columns with top cap to reduce the evaporation. The simulations were performed using the software SVFlux® which incorporates material properties such as Soil Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) and Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity. Preliminary results indicate a non-linear asymptotic behavior of the saturation rate with respect to the operation time. Results from numerical simulations show the same non-linear behavior and a considerable delay between input and output flows. Further analysis concerning with the effect of transpiration and evaporation mechanisms is discussed.

"Recent developments in image analysis techniques and the power of computer hardware have spurred international interest in the potential uses of image analysis techniques in a range of industrial applications. One of these applications is the control of the complex flotation process. Despite years of work, the flotation process is still poorly understood. Current attempts to control flotation cells focus on consistently duplicating the control achieved by human operators.In human control of flotation two of the dominant visual cues are the froth flow speed and the froth stability. These two factors can be measured and inferred respectively from image analysis of video of the froth surface. Two important hydrodynamic variables for control of the flotation process are the air addition rate and the level of the froth pulp interface.The current work focuses on the relationship between froth flow speed and the rate of recovery of concentrate from a flotation cell. Results are presented that show a strong relationship between flow speed and concentrate yield. These results include tests where the conditions in the cell were not changed, as well as tests involving changes to the cell level and air addition rate. Preliminary results are presented which show a correlation between froth stability and froth percent solids.Future developments of the system will include comprehensive froth texture typing, colour space and stability analyses."

"The extent and nature of the damage to diamonds at processing plant is largely determined by the design features of the equipment, the characteristics of the feed ore and the parameters of the ore disintegration process (change in the rotational speed of the autogenous mills, variations of the water supply to comminution process, choice of the optimum charge, etc.). To monitor the intactness of diamonds, an instrumental method using the X-ray tomography system and colored synthetic indicator diamonds was developed for identifying the process-related damage. The X-ray tomography system consists of a CT-Portable X-ray tomographic scanner, a crystal positioning device and customized software (developed by the Fraunhofer Institute and Aliud GmbH, Germany). The developed method enables improvement of the accuracy of the results, exclusion of the subjectivity of the mineralogical assessment, acceleration of data processing and promptly planning of the activities aimed at reducing the process-related damage to diamonds. INTRODUCTION Industrial tests of ore processing technology at the enterprises of ALROSA PJSC are accompanied by assessment of the process-related damage to diamonds. The assessment of the process-related damage to crystals is carried out for prompt elimination of factors contributing to the increase of impact forces in the process flow sheet of ore treatment plant. For this purpose a specially selected parcel of -4.0 + 2.0 mm sized natural indicator diamonds is used. The diamonds are exposed to ionizing radiation in order to turn them green and thus to create a distinctive feature. Colored natural indicator diamonds are described, photographed in several views and introduced into the process flow sheet of the processing plant, then extracted from the process flow, described and photographed again. The comparison of diamonds before and after their passing through the process flow sheet of the plant allows to find evidence of process-related impact on the crystal and to calculate the factor of process-related damage (the number of crystals damaged during liberation and recovery), the loss of crystal weight and the degree of damage to the crystals. The method of colored indicator diamonds is used to select processing methods, equipment or regime which would be the safest for diamonds based on the analysis of the factors of process-related damage. In the recent past, a paradigm shift in terms of resource utilization and beneficiation practices is experienced by the Indian mining and mineral sector. Depleting iron ore reserves coupled with increasing demand for low-alumina iron ore fines to improve blast furnace performance in terms of productivity and reduced slag rate necessitate intensive beneficiation of iron ore. The task is even difficult for Indian iron ores, which are generally high in iron content and at the same time characterized by aluminous gangue. In 2006, M/s Tata Steel commissioned a state-of-the-art Jigging Plant (Batac Jig) at Noamundi Iron Mine (NIM), mainly to reduce alumina in iron ore fines. The jigging plant is incorporated in the existing beneficiation circuit to treat ?10+0.5mm size fraction of classifier fines. Over the course of plant stabilization while the plant could deliver desired ore upgradation and average product alumina, variability in terms of alumina content has been a concern. This paper discusses a case study of process parameters optimization in jigging operation to achieve consistent product quality while improving the effectiveness of gravity concentration for the beneficiation of Noamundi iron ore also to take care of inferior plant feed (input) grade year on year. The operating variables used to optimize jigging operations include bed height, pulsion and suction time, particle size, strokes, and plant throughput rate.

The paper discusses the experiences of a fast-track curriculum designed to provide the industry with engineers capable of working in minerals processing industry. The course has been done once before and the second course has been started. Students chosen have graduated from other fields of engineering. For the first course, twelve students were chosen from 152 applicants and for the second the twelve students were chosen from 96 applicants. The basic idea of the curriculum is to alternate between theoretical studies at the university and working experience periods at industrial sites. In addition, there are several one week assignment tasks at industrial sites. The theoretical periods are six to eight weeks long and there are three of them. During the first period, the teaching concentrates on unit processes and their chemical and physical background. The theme of the second period is mineral engineering systems; flowsheet development, process dynamics, control systems etc. The last theoretical period teaches environmental issues, leadership, project work and other similar topics. Each of the theoretical periods ends with an assignment week at industrial sites. The assignments are designed to wrap up the teachings of the period. For the industrial periods, the students are given learning goals, which have been discussed and designed with their industrial mentors. They are required to find relevant literature, make experimental designs, implement those designs, present the data, and make conclusions of their results. During these periods, a weekly meeting over the Internet is compulsory. Sampling of municipal solid waste is known to be difficult to sample if it has to be representative. When dealing with municipal solid waste, the usual method is to study separately waste material below 40 mm and particles bigger than 40 mm. The material < 40 mm cannot be sorted manual and is termed the “fine fraction”. The particles > 40 mm can be separated manually and are usually sorted into pre-defined groups of materials. These groups can be defined depending on the demand of quality assurance. But standardisation of procedures is not far progressed, even for the widely practised sorting methods.

"INTRODUCTIONFlotation of mineral particles by cationic surfactants – namely alkyl amines and their derivatives – is finding ever growing application in processing of various ores and in quality refinement of the benefication end products, iron concentrates for example. In the recent years application of cationic collectors - alkylmorpholines - enabled the development of new highly efficient procedure of water-soluble mineral processing, being also the one with low energy consumption. This procedure is a reverse flotation of carnallite from bay salts of salt-pans and from carnallite ores.The efficiency of cationic SAS influence depends upon colloid-chemical state of the collector in flotation liquid phase, especially if the latter comprises mineral salts. Availability of clayey impurities or slime particles of iron oxide in cation flotation feed, which actively sorb the cationic collector, deteriorate considerably the cation flotation performances. In Halurgy Institute the investigations of cation flotation under potash and carnallite ore processing have been carried out, and new reagent modes, enhancing cationic surfactants sorption at mineral particles, have been developed. Application of new reagents enables one to decrease considerably the consumption of expensive cationic collectors and to enhance the floatability of coarse mineral particles."

"For the requirements of the mining company “Rudnik-Rudnik”, engaged in undergr-ound exploitation of polymetallic ore and lead, zinc and copper concentrates production, the Department of Computer Application of the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade, designed a computer supported and integrated information-management system. This paper presents a concept of this system covering both monitoring and management of production in ""Rudnik-Rudnik"".The ""Rudnik"" Rudnik, Yugoslavia is a mining company, engaged in underground exploitation of polymetallic ore and production of ore, zinc and copper concentrate as well as other metals such as silver, bismuth and cadmium. This mining company runs stable business activities and undergoes a permanent growth of valuable production volume.The basic characteristics of production-technical system of ""Rudnik"" company are: uniform and up-todate technical-technological solutions: linking of production chain from underground exploitation of ore to flotation, namely final product - concentrate of lead, zinc and copper; complete mechanization of production; relatively low level of computer technics implementation; namely, ununiformed implementation of different application of computer-supported information technologies in production and business activities of the Company.These are the assumptions on the basis of which the management of the Company made a decision, in 1999, to upgrade information-management functions through development and application of modern integrated and computer-supported production-business information-management system (hereinafter: IMS, namely IMS Rudnik). For this purpose the Company requested the Department of Computer Application, Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade to make the Project on IMS for their needs."

Although the cyanidation process for gold leaching has been applied for more than a hundred years, some aspects of it, such as the passivation of the gold and the depassivating action of heavy metals, are still not well understood. In this work the anodic behaviour and surface composition of gold in alkaline aqueous cyanide with lead additions were investigated using polarization experiments and XPS. It was found that lead in the solution activated the gold at low concentrations, somewhat more positive than the reversible potential for gold, but that the activity again decreased at higher concentrations of lead. The potential range for the activation of the gold coincides with that where underpotential deposition of lead occurs, i.e. –200 to –600 mV(SCE), as indicated by the surface composition of the gold, shown in figure 1. Note that the concentration of lead on the surface of the gold only increased with time in the bulk plating potential range for lead, where gold is not activated by the presence of lead. It is also shown that up to 20 mg/L of lead added to the solution will activate the gold, provided that bulk plating of the lead is avoided. It is also important to avoid reducing conditions during leaching, where bulk plating of lead may occur, if the gold is to be activated by lead to achieve a high leaching rate, as the bulk plated lead screens the surface rather than activating it.

"The results of CFD modelling of complex heat transfer and fluid flow in DC electric arc furnace are presented. The model includes energy and momentum conservation equations for gas phase (freeboard), liquid phase (molten bath) and solid phase (walls and graphite electrode). Simulation revealed the temperature distribution in all elements of the furnace. The influence of the arc and melt resistance on the temperature distribution is discussed.Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) becomes a powerful tool for better understanding of the heta and mass transfer processes in industrial equipment. In current work commercial CFD software STAR-CD was used to analyse complex heat transfer in DC EAF, including forced and natural convection, conduction and radiation. The finite volume solver using body-fitted grid was used. The grids are non-staggered hexahedral grids and all variables are evaluated at cell centers. Steady-state calculations were performed with PISO algorithm. For the convective terms in equations the hybrid differencing scheme was used. An upwind differencing scheme was used for other terms. Conjugative heat transfer was taken into account in heat transfer calculations on gas-liquid and gas-solid interfaces. Radiation from the arc and inner surfaces of the furnace was calculated by a “discrete beam” approach. Source term in energy conservation equation was used to represent heat release in the zone occupied by the DC electric arc. The volume of this zone was calculated from semi-empirical equations. The Joule heat and heat due to chemical reaction in the melt were calculated through the source term expression in the energy balance equations for the slag and metal in the molten bath. The gas acceleration in the electric arc zone and stirring of the slag due to gas bubbles motion were accounted for by momentum source terms in the momentum conservation equations.All simulations were carried out using axisymmetric two-dimensional grid. The grid resolution was 20 cm per cell in most part of the furnace, except the arc region, where resolution was 5 mm per cell."

"Until the advent of intensive cyanidation, gold gravity concentrates were generally treated by tabling. The table concentrates were smelted while table middlings and tailings were recycled to the milling circuit for further grinding and subsequent leaching in the CIP/CIL circuit. Gold recovery on production tables is relatively low, often only 30 percent, and rarely above 60 percent. Significant factors in tabling performance are; mineralogy and the operator’s experience and ability. Units have been developed by Gekko Systems to treat both batch and continuous gold concentrates. Unit sizes are determined by leach kinetics and the required residence time of the concentrate in the unit.Gekko commenced the commercialisation of intensive leaching of gravity gold concentrates in 1997 with the first commercial prototype of the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR). Over 20 units are now installed worldwide with half that number on the African continent. South African mines, South Deeps (Placer Dome WAJV) and Target (AvGold) have both installed InLine Leach Reactors. Ashanti Goldfields have placed the ILR on their standard equipment list and have six operating units with a seventh on order. AngloGold installed one of the first ILR production units at Morila in Mali.Gekko Systems successfully installed an ILR1000 Batch unit at the Antapite Mine in Peru in December 2002. The unit was installed to treat gravity concentrates and to replace a shaking table. Following installation, gravity gold recovery increased from 15% to 40% of total gold. The unit was operational from start up and the first gravity batch treated achieved 98% gold recovery. The gravity concentrates also have a high silver content and 95% recoveries on silver were also achieved.Preliminary testwork identified that the concentrates required additional oxygen to achieve peak performance. As a result of optimisation work in the laboratory, leach kinetics in the ILR have been excellent with only 6 hours residence required to achieve maximum gold extraction."

"The long-term studies on development of the technology for precious metals recovery using activated carbons executed by Irkutsk Research Institute of Precious and Rare Metals and Diamonds (IRGIREDMET) were finished by successful introduction of ""Carbon-In-Pulp"" process in Russia (1984).The review of some studies, accompanied by development, testing, introduction and subsequent improvement of considered technology, carried out by IRGIREDMET is submitted in this paper.The basic regularities of gold and silver adsorption onto activated carbons from cyanide, thiourea, chloride and other solutions are investigated using various phisical-and-chemical methods ( X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Voltammetry, X-ray microanalysis etc.). Using voltammetry it was found that gold cyanide is adsorbed onto activated carbon without chemical changes and partial reduction of gold is possible only during drying of carbon samples before analysis. Metallic gold and silver may be dissolved in boiling cyanide solution at argon atmosphere when they are in contact with activated carbon surface. Gold adsorption mechanism for activated carbons has great differences from that for the ion exchange resins. So the most probable mechanism for gold adsorption from cyanide solution is adsorption of neutral molecules Me n+[Au(CN)2-]n.X-ray quantitative microanalysis technique was developed to investigate gold adsorption kinetics onto spherical activated carbon. Gold profiles in granules of activated carbon for various adsorption conditions were tested (carbon particle size, mixing efficiency, adsorption time etc.). Mathematical methods were used to determine gold diffusion coefficient within activated carbon granule.The properties of various types domestic and foreign activated carbons were tested and the demands to activated carbons suitable for gold extraction were determined. As a result foreign and Russian activated carbons AG-90, AG-95 were recommended for use at Russian gold plants. Domestic adsorbents are cheaper in comparison with foreign activated carbons. "The minerals industry is being challenged to reduce the amount of virgin ore that is mined, and to replace this material through the recycling of used commodity items and scrap, or by the reprocessing of waste materials. It is argued here that the existing technology base of minerals processing and refining offers real potential for handling these secondary resources. The challenge is to develop tools by which the most preferable recycling routes (both economically and environmentally) can be identified from a list of feasible alternatives, taking into account any operational constraints of these technologies.This paper describes an heuristic approach to developing the family of all technically feasible flowsheets to address this challenge, from which a preferred option may be selected according to a set of decision criteria (economic and environmental). Our approach uses conventional flowsheeting techniques of selecting flow variables and splitter functions, supported by design performance information for each unit operation. This set of design decision variables is augmented by knowledge of the suitability of a particular waste or scrap stream for a given unit operation within a flowsheet. We achieve this by comparing the composition of the scrap stream with the range of mineral streams for which the unit operation was designed initially. This is inspired by the “overlap” approach proposed by Legarth, where an “overlap” of 1 would suggest that there is high degree of compatibility between a given secondary resource stream and a primary mineral stream as inputs to a specific technology. The “overlap” concept has been extended to include information about the physical characteristics of secondary resource streams, as well as information relating to synergistic / antagonistic influences of minor elements present in the waste stream. A flowsheet which delivers a product of acceptable quality from a given secondary resource material is built up from a progression of unit technologies. The exercise is repeated to generate the family of all feasible flowsheets from combinations of acceptable unit technologies."

"Battery grade Mn ore is not found in India except in Dongri-Buzurg Mine, Dist. Bhandara, Maharashtra. The mine located in central India is operated by a premier company viz. Manganese Ore India Ltd., under Central Government Public Sector Undertaking. The company is not selling the product as battery grade material but instead primarily catering to the needs of the iron and steel industry in the country. However, a part of the ore is being used in-house for the production of electrolytic manganese-dioxide in their EMD plant, which is located near the mine.The production of lumpy ore for steel industries generated through multi-stage crushing and screening has resulted in accumulation of about 50,000 tonnes of low grade fines over the year, which contain low of Mn values. Further, the generation of fines is still on going process due to the production of lumpy ores. These fines are stacked in the form of unconsolidated dumps, which create environmental problems like air and water pollution and siltation in the adjoining fields. Besides they are occupying large space, which is scarce in this mining area. The Indian Bureau of Mines under one of its statutory functions has suggested the company to explore the possibility of recovery of additional values under conservation and environmental aspects. Hence the company has sponsored a bulk sample for beneficiation studies in the Modern Mineral Processing Laboratory and Pilot Plant of Indian Bureau of Mines at Nagpur, India. The main manganese minerals present in these mine rejects have been identified as pyrolusite and psilomelane. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of evolving a suitable beneficiation flowsheet to obtain manganese concentrates assaying over 72% MnO2 to be used as raw material for the manufacturing of dry cell batteries."
