"The process of arriving at the size and grade of· (a) a newly discovered body of mineralization, (b) a potential ore resource, (c) an orebody proposed for mining, or (d) the ore reserves in a mine, requires fundamental geological, and geometrical determinations as well as physical and chemical analyses. This paper outlines geological and geometrical features considered critical, in the authors' experience, in realistic reserve determination. These are discussed under the headings ""The Four Cs"". They include the Character, type or nature of the mineralization; the Continuity of various types of mineralization in the deposit; various key concerns in the Calculation besides the mathematics; and the Classification section which refers to basic considerations in classifying a mineral estimate. It is suggested that the responsibility for the calculation of a Resource or Reserve should be that of a geologist experienced in the ore type under review. Further, it should be the responsibility of the board of directors of the company owning the deposit to ensure that a sufficiently experienced person is chosen to carry out the process. IntroductionThe key issue of ore reserves is that they are intended as, a clear-as- possible statement of metal in place in a mineable orebody. Precise, widely understood definitions help convey understanding of the figures, but accuracy requires careful geological input before the calculation is made and a definition is applied. Many recent new mining operations in Canada have experienced serious shortcomings between original ore reserve figures and what was mined. This suggests deficiencies in the actual tonnage and grade calculated in advance of production. The authors suspect that much of the problem is due to a less-than-adequate outline of the orebody before calculating reserves for production or alternatively, treatment of grade and thickness data without regard to an orebody outline. Careful consideration of mineralization and ore continuity is one of the most important aspects of ore geology. Ore reserve calculation should be more than a mathematical exercise."

Many mines combine open pit with underground mining, and on many occasions the underground mine is an extension of the open-pit. In these circumstances the decision about where the open-pit stops and the underground starts is crucial and driven by many factors. This paper looks at some of the ways that this cut-over can be calculated and specifically examines the calculation of it using modern mine optimization software. The paper provides a case study which will review various outcomes using these techniques, and demonstrates the influence of various factors on the optimal transition cut-over point. Biographies Mr Finch is a Divisional Manager and a Principal consultant at Snowden Mining Industry Consultants in Vancouver, Canada. At Snowden Mr Finch leads a team of engineers that perform mining engineering studies for projects around the world. Prior to joining Snowden Mr Finch was the Mining Manager at Barrick?s Henty mine in Tasmania Australia. Prior to that Mr Finch has held a variety of roles in both consulting and operations working for various organisations at various levels in the Asia Pacific region. Mr Finch gained a bachelor?s degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Queensland in 1986, and a bachelor?s degree in Economics from the University of Queensland in 1993. His expertise is in mine planning, mine optimisation and mine management. Dr Elkington is a Consultant at Snowden Mining Industry Consultants in Perth, Australia. He is responsible for the design and implementation of Snowden?s proprietary optimization software products. Prior to joining Snowden Dr Elkington completed his PhD in Mine Optimisation at The University of Western Australia, and bachelor?s degrees in Engineering (Hons) and Commerce from The University of Western Australia. He specialises in optimization and trade-off studies, and has consulted on projects across all major commodities and regions.

"These guidelines have been prepared to assist the Qualified Person(s)in the planning and supervision of exploration programs which will be reported under National Instrument 43101. The Companion Policy of NI43101 references the guidelines and states that issuers and Qualified Persons should follow them.Exploration Best Practices GuidelinesPreamble: These guidelines have been prepared to assist the Qualified Person(s) in the planning and supervision of exploration programs which will be reported under National Instrument 43-101. Such exploration programs must be under the supervision of the Qualified Person who will be responsible and accountable for the planning, execution and interpretation of all exploration activity as well as the implementation of quality assurance programs and reporting. These guidelines are also recommended for use in the planning and execution of exploration programs which will not be reported under NI 43-101. This set of broad guidelines or ""best practices"" has been drawn up to ensure a consistently high quality of work that will maintain public confidence and assist securities regulators. The guidelines are not intended to inhibit the original thinking or application of new approaches, that are fundamental to successful mineral exploration.Results should be summarized and reported in a Technical Report of good professional quality in accordance with the National Instrument 43-101 and Form 1 contained in that instrument. All exploration work from which public reporting will ensue must be designed and carried out under the supervision of a Qualified Person (""QP""). A QP is defined in National Instrument 43-101 as an individual who is an engineer or geoscientist with at least five (5) years' experience in mineral exploration, mine development, mine operation or project assessment, has experience relevant to the subject matter of the project or report and is a member in good standing of a recognized professional association."

The Ekati Safety Guarantee is a conversation that has been taking place at Ekati for the last two years. It is a challenging, confronting, inspiring conversation which encourages people to see and pursue the possibility of guaranteeing that nobody who works at Ekati will be seriously injured or killed at work. The conversation takes us out of the normal, incremental approach to safety improvement; it takes us out of the world of striving, of seeking, of trying, and allows us to stand in, and be a stand for the future possibility of Zero Harm. It requires an unreasonable stand for, and commitment to, our own safety and the safety of our colleagues. A Powerful Conversation The safety guarantee began with conversations between executive team members and has been propagated regularly through the line through management meetings, pre-shift meetings, during workplace inspections, job safety observations, job and project planning, orientation and induction sessions, and when opportunities present themselves. This is a conversation that continues outside of Ekati with family, with government, with community members. It is a stand for safety as a value. The conversation about the safety guarantee is now pervasive at Ekati and forms part of a framework of initiatives that have led to sustained improvement in safety performance. During the last two years, the recordable injury frequency at Ekati has dropped to its lowest level in Ekati?s history. At the same time, job safety observations have increased from 500 per month to 4000 per month, whilst the overall number of people at Ekati has reduced by 30%. It has led to new ways of thinking about the conduct of operations. It influenced the 2008 upgrade of the Ekati process plant, resulting in the development and implementation of a crane lift protocol that eliminated injuries during over 100 lifts in two weeks, in an area of difficult geometry and with multiple entrances. It created space to successfully conduct a challenging commissioning period for the process plant crusher, during which time the machine was disassembled and reassembled several times, without incident or injury. No production pressure was permitted to interfere with this work, in line with our stated aim that we wanted everyone involved to guarantee that they would not be seriously injured or killed?our people had the space to do the work at a pace, and in a way, that guaranteed this outcome.

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. "At the May 15, 2006 and the May 1, 2007 Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) meetings in Vancouver and Montreal, CSA requested CIM consider certain issues arising out of the CSA review of Technical Reports and public disclosure, in general, regarding the practice of estimation and reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. The following is a summary of the issues raised by the CSA and the responses of the CIM.Preamble: At the May 15, 2006 and the May 1, 2007 Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA)-Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) meetings in Vancouver and Montreal, CSA requested CIM consider certain issues arising out of the CSA review of Technical Reports and public disclosure, in general, regarding the practice of estimation and reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. The following is a summary of the issues raised by the CSA and the responses of the CIM Reserve Definition and the CIM Estimation Best Practices Committees (the Committees). This information is intended to provide the Qualified Person (QP) with further guidance when estimating Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and in preparing a technical report written under National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101). Several members of the CIM Reserve Definition Committee, the CIM Estimation Best Practices Committee and some members of the Committee for Mineral Resources International Reporting Standards have reviewed these issues and provide the following commentary.Issue 1. - CSA requested CIM review and comment on the selection of an appropriate commodity price to be used in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves estimates.Commodity prices are used in the estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and in the economic analysis of a property. In times of rapidly changing commodity prices, or when prices are at the extreme ends of a commodity price cycle, the QP has a difficult job in selecting an appropriate commodity price.• The selection of appropriate technical variables, including commodity price, is clearly the responsibility of the Qualified Person (QP). The QP must describe the reasons for selecting these variables, including price, in the technical report.• The definition of a ""Mineral Resource"" contains the wording ""reasonable prospects for economic extraction,"" therefore, a QP must select economic parameters, including commodity price, that will result in an estimate of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves that have ""reasonable prospects for economic extraction""."

"In the UK, Ireland, and Western Europe, the mineral resource and reserve reporting standard is the PERC Code, developed and maintained by the Pan-European Reserves and Resources Reporting Committee, which is a standing committee set up under the auspices of a number of professional organisations which include the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (loM3), the Geological Society of London (GSL), the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) and the Institute of Geologists of Ireland (IGI) to develop a Pan-European reporting code. The PERC Code supercedes the old IMMM Reporting Code 2001 and is recognised by the UK securities regulators and stock exchanges.""FOREWORD1 The Pan European Reserves and Resources Reporting Committee (PERC) Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (further referred to as 'the Code') sets out minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for Public Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Europe. "In Canada and other countries, legislation dealing with accurate factual disclosure for mining projects is being expanded to include more metallurgical design information. Grinding characteristics, metallurgical recovery of contained metal and environmental hazards associated with tailings disposal will be part of the Canadian package. This paper will examine only that portion of the plant design standard practice that relates to grinding – in SAG mills and ball mills that grind ore from as received crushed material to final ground product that is fed to downstream plant recovery processes. Since grinding plants represent a significant portion of the overall concentrator cost, accountability in grinding design should no longer be left to chance, opinion, or hidden proprietary information. This is the 21st century. It is reasonable to expect that a factual basis will be needed so that a Qualified Person (QP) reviewing the grinding mill design can understand it. That will also involve how many and what quality of samples are taken to define the characteristics of the deposit, the accuracy of the tests used to measure ore hardness and the method by which the dimensions and power of the mills are determined. If these criteria are not met, the QP may have no choice but to call attention to the lack of convincing information regarding the grinding mill design for the project. At the same time clients are expected to demand getting the correct design information at a cheaper price, results in a more timely way, and accurate design to the point where the risk of tonnage shortfalls are reduced or eliminated.Tables will be presented to show how this can be done to current standards using existing technologies. At the same time it is acknowledged that current standards are ill-defined and that to achieve consensus among those involved in SAG mill design work, it may require that a consortium funded project be set up to establish what tests and methods for grinding design are suitable to meet the new standards for metallurgical disclosure. By running parallel design methods on several major projects over a period of 5 years, the process of how to design grinding circuits will be better understood because the projects will start at the design stage, include procurement of the mills and will end with a benchmark test on the plant.Selecting the samples and the best schedule for doing test work on core samples submitted and mill design, will be discussed in this paper. The issue of completing the grinding design in time for early procurement decisions is on the critical path for most major projects. Discussions between mining engineers, geologists and process engineers are needed early in the development cycle, at the scoping study level (SS), preliminary engineering assessment (PEA), prefeasibility study (PFS), and at the feasibility study stage (FS), to ensure that proper planning for design sample selection is done. Using adequate sampling and testing methods in a timely way allows early procurement of the grinding mills and minimizes project risk."

If fuel cells and hydrogen are to become a mass market reality a substantial amount of further research and development needs to be undertaken. Work in hydrogen storage, production, the economics of all aspects of fuel cells and hydrogen, materials balances, and product integration are just a few of the areas that are under focus. Setting R&D targets, and providing R&D funding are therefore areas that are central to the long term development of the market, and areas in which a number of governments worldwide are highly active. Some governments, such as Japan and Korea, have set a number of very ambitious, highly focused, long term targets and are backing this up with substantial funding, others such as the EU are working on a more integrated approach, wrapping some fairly fundamental R&D into large integrated projects which run in combination with a number of other market aspects, such as public acceptance and roadmapping. The US is slightly different, in that although is has a number of long term programmes and targets, FreedomCar and SuperGen being just two, the levels of funding are set annually with the passing of each years Fiscal Budget. This paper takes three high profile regions and analyses the R&D targets and funding levels for fuel cells and hydrogen. Criteria that will be looked at include: Time frame of target(s), level of ambition, funding issues, including: Funding windows, levels available, funding barriers, overall programme goals. The added value to this paper is that it will provide a clearer picture of where each region is heading, what are its strengths and weaknesses, in terms of R&D and where there may be areas for potential international collaboration.

The Ilimaussaq Intrusive Complex in south Greenland is a layered alkaline igneous body that is predominantly comprised of agpaitic nepheline syenites. The Complex is now recognized as containing vast resources of uranium in polymetallic ores that are also strongly enriched in rare earth elements (REEs) and zinc. Uranium and REEs are dominantly hosted in phosphate minerals with a minor proportion hosted in zirconium silicate minerals. Equivalent ores are yet to be mined for uranium anywhere in the world; however, studies are well advanced in confirming a process route to economically extract uranium. The Ilimaussaq Complex is considered the world?s type-locality for agpaitic rocks. Formation of the complex is attributed to four successive pulses of magma. The first produced an augite syenite, which now forms a marginal shell. This was followed by intrusion of a sheet of peralkaline granite. The third and fourth stages make up the bulk of the intrusion and are peralkaline to hyper-agpaitic in composition. The third batch of magma differentiated to produce pulaskite, foyaite and naujaite. Stage four produced the kakortokites and lujavrites, which are the units of particular economic significance. Kakortokites are strongly enriched in zirconium, niobium and tantalum, whereas the lujavrites are strongly enriched in uranium, rare earth elements, fluorine and zinc. Lujavrites are vertically zoned with arfvedonsite (black) lujavrites grading downward into aegerine (green) lujavrites. The upper most portions of the black lujavrites contain uranium concentrations of greater than 450 ppm, which decreases toward green lujavrites where uranium concentrations rarely exceeds 200 ppm. Resources defined to date in accordance with the Australian JORC code include 282 M lbs of uranium oxide at a grade of 280 ppm. With scope for several other similar sized resources within complex, the overall potential resource is of immense global significance. Metallurgical studies to date indicate that uranium can be successfully extracted from black lujavrites via an alkaline pressure leach method. This involves selectively leaching uranium with solutions containing carbonate and bicarbonate at elevated temperature and pressure. Uranium can then be recovered by hydrogen reduction to create a uranium oxide product. There is also scope to beneficiate ores as uranium and REE?s are hosted in specific mineral groups. Phosphate minerals can be effectively concentrated by froth floatation and uranium-bearing silicate minerals can be concentrated by gravitational methods. Studies indicate that REEs can be extracted from the residue following the alkaline leach process by a dilute hydrochloric acid wash, with REEs then precipitated in the form of a REE concentrate.

"OVER half a million tons of chromite ore is used annually on the North American continent, all of which is imported from overseas. Chromite is essential in the manufacture of stainless steel, armour plate, and tool steel, to mention only three important uses. It is, therefore, a strategic mineral, and every effort should be made to discover a means of utilizing our domestic supplies.Both Canada and the United States possess deposits of chromite, but they are low grade with respect both to their chromium content and to the ratio of chromium to iron. Mechanical concentration can improve the chromium content •by rejecting gangue, but chromium concentrate produced is still lower in chromium than imported chromite and, more important, the ratio of chromium to iron is only about half that in the imported material. At present, a chromium to iron ratio •of 3:1 is desired by industry. To obtain this .ratio in the case of domestic ores, a chemical attack on the chromi'e is necessary."

For over 150 years gypsum from Nova Scotia has been shipped via water to the United States east coast. The history of the movement has been one of continual improvements in quarrying, loading, and shipping. At the start, man-size rock quarried by hand auger and black powder was loaded into horse-drawn carts, hauled to the waterfront, and dumped into 100-ton sailing schooners. Last year the Canadian Gypsum Company completed the latest and most modern of these successive installations for the movement of this Nova Scotia product. The new system loads crushed gypsum into 11,600-ton vessels at Hantsport in two hours' time at high tide. At the head of the bay of Fundy are located vast deposits of gypsum. The tidal rise and fall of 45 feet twice a day, with its attendant swift currents, has always presented major navigation and shipping problems. When the tide is low, the Hantsport ship-loading pier is high and dry, with no water within 400 feet. Three hours later a large river has flooded in (running up hill) and large steamers can dock at the wharf. Before high water, the ship has been loaded and -there is a depth of 30 feet or more of water around the wharf. At high water, the ship sails away on the ebbing tide as the river runs in the other direction. Tides are caused by the gravitational attraction of the moon and sun on the ocean. When both celestial bodies are pulling together the 'spring tide' results, which means a 50-foot variation from high to low. This occurs at new and full moon. A week later, when the sun and moon work in opposition, the difference is only 32 feet between high and low water. The bay of Fundy, having a funnel shape (150 miles wide at mouth from Yarmouth to Portland, while the upper estuary at Hantsport is only one mile wide), builds up a tidal influence from 10 feet at the mouth to an average of 45 feet at Hantsport.

Real time measurement of wear and corrosion provides crucial information needed to determine an optimal schedule for corrective maintenance and is a powerful tool to maximise equipment availability and reliability. It also leads to savings from optimized spare parts handling and helps to avoid costs of accidents and their negative impact on safety and the environment. This paper presents the technology of ?painted-on? ultrasonic transducers that can be integrated to structures and accurately measure the remaining thickness and therefore determine wear or corrosion losses. These transducers have a small footprint, a performance comparable to other commercially available ultrasonic transducers and can sustain temperatures as high as 400ºC. The application of this technology to mining equipments and its potential benefits are discussed.

The present discussions throughout the civilized world on the subject of gold for monetary purposes may seem due to general economic conditions during the past year. But for some years previously a small group of authorities had warned the world against the continued disregard of an equitable distribution of existing gold reserves, and had urged the necessity of keeping the supply of new gold equal to the monetary demand, which, according to world production and trade figures, increases on the average about 3 per cent per annum. In 1927, Sir John Aird, the President of The Canadian Bank of Commerce, stated that the United States could spare a billion dollars of the supply it then held, 4 ½ billion dollars. About a year and a half ago the Professor of Banking and Currency in the University of London, Mr. T. E. Gregory, said, "If the world finds it impossible to modify its habits so far as to make an organized effort to economize gold seem less Utopian, it must be prepared to pay for its bad habits, in this and other respects, by a possible loss of material welfare." These clear-cut statements were not heeded, perhaps for one reason because most countries were in the flush of prosperity, and making such great demands upon the mining fraternity for industrial materials as to distract attention, at least to some degree, from gold mining. Now the world knows it faces serious problems, first, of making? fully effective its present monetary reserves, which, although badly distributed, are as a whole ample for the needs of the present, and secondly, of preventing a shortage in the supply of new gold, one that may come within the next few years if the present sources of supply are not enlarged, and if there is no marked change in the technique of gold production.

This paper describes a generic technology for modeling in real time the various operations of surface mines. Based on various sensor fusion techniques and high-speed network, a virtual reality model of a mine capable of representing not only static infrastructures but also mobile equipment such as trucks and excavators is created. The modeling technique deal with a wide range of sensors such as survey data, satellite pictures, ore concentration, machine condition indicators, video, sound, real-time GPS locator, range sensor, etc. The model created allows for every piece of information to be displayed in context allowing for a better temporal and spatial correlation of events by mine operators, planners, and supervisors. Syncrude, a Canadian mining company located in northern Alberta, is planning to use this technology, not only to understand oil sands mining processes better, but also to give decision-makers better access to the timely, accurate information from the field that they need to make informed decisions.

"This paper describes the townsite of Wabush and the two railways operated by Wabush Mines for the loading and unloading of iron ore concentrate. The town of Wabush is located approximately 200 air miles north of Sept-Iles, Quebec and is in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Construction of the town-site began in 1961 to provide housing accommodation for the construction force and permanent employees in the mining and milling operations located 4 miles away. Wabush Mines operates two short railway lines in loading and unloading concentrate between the concentrator, located at Wabush, and the pellet plant at Pointe Noire, Quebec. Both of these railways connect with the main line of the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway and provide a shuttle service between the two phases of the operation."

The Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine was the answer to the flue-dust problem of the copper blast-furnace smelter. Then came concentration by flotation, which threatened to eliminate the blast furnace from the smelting field altogether, and again the sintering process solved the problem. As is well known, the sintering process is dual in its function; it expels sulphur from the charge and it converts a powdery material into nodules or chunks that hold together. The charge is ignited on top just as it passes over the edge of the first suction box, and the oxygen of the air that is drawn downward through the charge breaks up the sulphide and oxidizes about fifty percent of the sulphur. The heat produced by this reaction in the upper stratum of the charge ignites that lying immediately below, and, when the pallett has travelled the full length of the machine, the tire has reached the graces and the fine concentrate has changed its characteristics by being partially fused and has become a more or less solid mass. When the Granby Company was smelting its ore as mined, one small D-L machine was adequate for the treatment of the flue dust, but as soon as the policy of smelting the concentrate was adopted, it became necessary to add two large machines to the sintering plant. The three sintering units, of which two are 42 in. by 396 in. and the other 42 in . by 264 in. in hearth area, have a combined capacity of from 370 to 450 tons (dry) of charge per day. The capacity varies directly as the hearth area. The sinter produced is about 88 per cent of the dry charge, or 325 to 400 tons per day. The sintered fines returned for resintering average between 30 and 35 per cent of the charge, but this is not as great a disadvantage as might appear, since the addition of hot fines improves the burning qualities of the mixture. From 50 to 54 per cent of the sulphur is eliminated in the sintering operation.

THE disposal of tailing or waste material, which is generally a very large proportion of the ore treated, is a major problem in the location and operation of any concentrating enterprise and especially so where the life of the operation is expected to continue for many years. Many factors need to be taken into consideration in the selection of a tailing site, chief among which are economical handling of the material, subsequent re-treatment of the tailing, and precaution against stream pollution by waste water. The final location of many mill sites bas been governed largely by the selection of a sui table area for tailing storage. The Sullivan concentrator of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company is situated about three miles from the Sullivan mine at Kimberley, B.C., and one of the deciding factors in its location at this distance from the mine was the availability of a suitable area in which tailing could be deposited. In view of the indicated long life of the property, a far-sighted policy bad to be adopted in the matter of tailing storage, for not only would it be necessary to accumulate a huge tonnage of finely ground material, but also reclamation for iron recovery at some future date bad to be considered. Some idea of the extent of the problem may be grasped when it is noted that, by the end of 1938, over 18,000,000 tons of tailing bad been impounded in an area of some 200 acres.

The electric power conduit (EPC) in Korea has been constructed since 1978. Facing the challenge of safety and sustainability of the EPC, it is urgent to develop an inspection strategy and maintenance system for the structure based on the concept of life-cycle management. This paper introduces the newly developed mobile inspection and diagnostic system of the EPC. The novel aspect of this particular system is the integration of non-destructive mobile inspection techniques with BIM (Building Information Modeling) and LBS (Location-Based Service). BIM is an ideal tool and platform for developing an inspection and diagnostic system, and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a useful tool to construct USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network) for LBS. The goal of this research is to establish an EPC inspection and diagnostic system concept based on BIM and LBS using RFID. In this research, a BIM model of OPENTBM tunnel for EPC will be established to show the integration of 3D CAD with the inspection data. An EPC?s maintenance database, which includes the deterioration types of the structure, inspection records, and repair methods, was designed to interact with the BIM. The system will be implemented by the BIM with the related database, in which the construction geometry and all related information are stored. The proposed system was designed to utilize the inspection and diagnostic system under the USN environment using RFID in EPC directly.

The topic of this article is the automation and robotization in refurbishment processes of industrial buildings. The need to mold these production spaces is quite universal. Particularly in the regions with a high industrial development and with a lack of buildable land, there is a need to convert this kind of spaces into an improved production system. The latest developments can be a useful tool for achieving a more efficient way of reforming this type of construction. On the one hand we have the digital or computerized 3D Laser Scanning (Computer Aided Measurement) that allows an accurate 3D modeling of the entire building. On the other hand, the project management using BIM (Building Information Modeling) could provide an easy design of each of the elements of the refurbishment. Finally, through the production of construction elements using robotics as jig or for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) we achieve a neat production of each element. How can be all those technologies applied in the refurbishment or expansion of industrial buildings? The research takes a first approach and analyzes industrial buildings that can be called generic or not specialized. To narrow the field of refurbishment, three major factors are defined. The first is to minimize the bill of the energy consumption of the buildings. This could be done either insulating the envelope, reducing the waste-volume to be conditioned climatically or creating facilities for energy production. The second is that the refurbishment or expansion of industrial buildings should try not to interfere on the production process that takes place in the building. In other words, the assembly of the elements in the construction site should be quick and easy, causing the least of disturbance at the workplace. Finally, the research makes an approach towards a robot integrated industrial or productive building .
