THE Greenhill mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, is situated at Blairmore, Alberta, and produces 2,500 tons per day of bituminous coal. On Monday, October 25th, 1943, smoke was discovered by a party of firebosses on their regular weekly inspection of air-ways. Probably the fire had been smouldering for several days but, as it had started on the outcrop at the top of an old raise filled with dirt, only a small quantity of smoke could filter through, and the plume of mist that crowns the fan at that season had prevented the fan-man from noticing it. This raise is only about 200 feet from the fan, and is 70 feet long between the fan-drift and the outcrop. It was impossible to prove the origin of the fire, as it had probably started several days before it was discovered, but it is possible that a careless smoker may have thrown a match into the opening at the outcrop, and that the old, dry timber had caught fire. The airways are in No. 2 seam, a bituminous seam 18 to 25 feet thick surmounted by shales and sandstones. Only 45 feet vertically above it is No. 1 seam, 12 feet thick, overlain by a strong conglomerate. In that vicinity, No. 1 seam had been worked out about ten years ago and the strata between the two seams are undoubtedly fissured. The pitch of both seams is 43 degrees.

"Pure aluminum (Al) matrix composites with changing the volume fraction of TiB2 particle content from 10 to 30% was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. Then the microstructure, density, dispersibility and thermal conductivity of the composites was estimated. As increasing TiB2 content, the dispersibility of particles and the density of the composites degraded slightly. And, the effect of the dispersibility of TiB2 particles on the thermal conductivity was quite little. The thermal conductivity of the composites was less than the theoretical value calculated by Maxwell-Eucken equation considering the effect of the density. It is due the influence of the interface heat transfer rate, because these composites have many small sized particles and have high interface density.INTRODUCTION Recently, metal matrix composites (MMCs) have been used widely in electric / electronic components, architectural materials, transportation equipment, aerospace and a precision instruments, because it’s superior properties have been greatly watched. Demand of MMC for industrial use has been increasing gradually. Furthermore, multifunction properties are required for the composites strongly. By integrating the dissimilar materials, the composites have various properties that we cannot get from monolithic materials. On the other hand, the response to the thermal management is required for materials, recently, and the need for the structural material controlling the thermal conductivity has been increasing. Especially, superior thermal conductivity and good mechanical properties from room temperature to high temperature are required for heat sink and heat exchanger at the same time. In late years, a study on the composites combining carbon materials and aluminum and copper has been developing, and actually the composites with high thermal conductivity which is not provided in the conventional materials is developed. On the other hand, non-oxide ceramics particles such as SiC and AlN, TiB2 have good thermal conductivity. Particularly, as TiB2 has good electrical conductivity, TiB2 containing MMCs is expected as innovative materials used as electric/ electronic components. Furthermore, as TiB2 has low density, high melting point, low thermal expansion and good deformation resistance, the development of high performance composites with multi-functional properties is expected. As thermal conductivity of pure Al and TiB2 are 225 and 66.4 W/mK, respectively, it is expected that the degradation of thermal conductivity by adding dispersant in Al matrix is suppressed. The authors have carried out a thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, mechanical properties of 20 vol.% TiB2 dispersed Al composites (Sugio, 2016, Sasaki, 2016). In this study, the influence of quantity of addition of TiB2 on microstructure, thermal conductivity was studied minutely."

"Onakawana Development Ltd. and Mana/ta Coal Ltd. have completed feasibility studies on a large lignite deposit located in the James Bay lowlands of northeastern Ontario. The mining plan described in this paper would supply coal for approximately a 33-year period with peak production in the early years of approximately 6.5 million tonnes per year then declining to 1.2 million tonnes in year 33. This paper describes the geology, resources, lignite quality, mine planning and related topics. LocationThe Onakawana lignite deposit is located in northeastern Ontario in the James Bay lowlands (Fig. l). The Ontario Northland Railway crosses the property and links it to Moosonee, JOO km further north, and Cochrane 180 km south. The area is crossed by latitude 50° 37', the approximate latitude of Calgary. Toronto lies 800 km south of the study area. History of Development The deposit has been known since the late 1600s when early English settlers extracted limited amounts of lignite for use at Moose Factory. The deposit has undergone sporadic periods of exploration activity in the late 1920s and early 1930s when the Ontario government drilled 116 holes, sunk two exploration shafts and published several technical and economic studies. Interest in the property was reactivated from 1939 to 1945 when the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway Ltd. drilled 182 additional closely spaced holes, excavated a test pit adjacent to the rail line and installed a boiler for testing purposes. In 1965, Alberta Coal Ltd., the predecessor of Manalta Coal Ltd., first became involved. Since then a further 182 holes have been drilled and coied, and the existing test pit reopened for sampling. In 1980, various reassessment studies were launched, including geology, mine engineering, conceptual design and environmental assessment studies. "HistoryMining of the Schefferville iron deposits began in 1954 on completion of the 357 mile railway linking the mines and the St-Lawrence river port of Sept-Iles. Apart from crushing, no treatment of these ores was required before smelting. In the late 1950's, testwork began at schefferville to develop a process for upgrading the extensive lower grade deposits containing 51% iron with 15% silica (natural analysis). Engineering for a six million ton per year beneficiation plant using cationic silica flotation and the A-C grate kiln Began in 1970 and the first pellets were produced in mid-1973.Production requirements and operating difficulties have restricted capacity to approximately 85% of design but on going improvements are being made continuously to attain design capacity.GeologyThe sedimentary ore bodies of the labrador trough occur in a belt 5 to 10 miles wide and 60 miles long and contain 51 individual deposits varying in size from 1 and 60 million tons. The ores are classified into three main color groups."

"The Jinfeng gold mine is one of the three gold mines that Eldorado Gold has in China and it is the second largest gold mine in China. The mine is located in a relatively remote and mountainous area in the southwestern Guizhou province. The orebody is similar to the Carlin type deposit in Nevada. The mill throughput was designed to treat 3,600 tones per day. The ore comes from open pit mining and underground mining, and is fed to one-stage jaw crushing. The crushed ore is stockpiled, reclaimed and then fed to the SABC grinding circuit. After classification with hydrocylones, the ore is floated, and the resultant concentrate is oxidized biologically in a process known as BIOX®. The oxidized concentrate is then washed in a CCD circuit and finally leached with cyanide in a CIL circuit for gold extraction. Jinfeng produces about 180,000 oz of gold per year.This paper introduces operations and modifications of SABC circuit over the past three years, and then describes some technical characteristic of the SAG mill and other circuits in the processing plant.Major modifications and improvements on the SABC circuit are described in the paper, including:1. Impacts of grinding ball and mill liner with respect to material selection, quality, hardness, manufacturing methods, and interactions between mill liner and grinding ball.2. Effect of milling operation parameters on milling efficiency.3. Impacts of SAG mill scats and modifications of grate size to improve mill throughput.4. Design and construction of a pebble crushing system, and recycle the crushed scats to the SAG mill to improve mill throughput.With the above-mentioned modifications, 20% increase over the design in mill throughput has been realized over the past three years, and operating cost has been significantly reduced. However, some issues still remain, and thus process modifications and technical innovations are still needed."

"The kinematic analysis of rock blocks is one part of a block stability assessment. It provides information about a block’s movability, i.e. if a block can detach from the adjacent rock mass and move towards the free space. This paper introduces an analytical method for the analysis of pure rotations of arbitrary finite polyhedral blocks. It enables the engineer to judge a block’s rotatability about a corner or an edge. The method is presented using a graphical and computational method. The application of the method is illustrated with an example. INTRODUCTIONThe kinematic analysis of rock blocks deals with the determination of the movability of blocks. Established methods typically cover: (a) translational motion (John 1968, Markland 1972, Londe et al. 1969, 1970, Goodman & Shi 1985, Warburton 1981) and (b) the specific rotational cases Toppling (Goodman & Bray 1977) and Slumping (Kieffer 1998). Mauldon & Goodman (1990, 1996) and Tonon (1998) introduced rotational kinematic analyses for three-joint pyramids and tetrahedral blocks extending Goodman & Shi’s block theory.All mentioned methods are subject to assumptions that limit the applicability to engineering problems. For example, the kinematic test of daylighting joints or intersections inherently assumes a finite block, which only can be proved by the finiteness theorem (Goodman & Shi 1985). Daylighting of an intersection or plane is not a sufficient condition for removability. Goodman & Shi’s and Warburton’s methods are limited to translational block motion. The methods for block rotations so far address tetrahedral blocks only. They also address only pure rotational modes and neglect the general motion of a rigid body. This paper introduces an analytical method for the analysis of the kinematic rotatability of finite rock blocks. It extends Mauldon's and Tonon's theory of rotatability of tetrahedra to arbitrary polyhedral blocks. A graphical method using the stereographic projection and a computational method are presented."

Field tests at a number of large mineral processing operations have been undertaken to better understand the wear life impact of different aspects of pump design, materials of construction and maintenance procedures. Data are presented for wear rates, and typical result variability is explored. To improve the availability of pumping equipment in a milling circuit it is not only important to improve the wear life, but also reduce the variability in the wear life of components so that the incidence of premature failure is lessened. Localised gouging wear due to flow separation and turbulent eddy formation is often the point at which part-holing occurs. A number of improvements to the design of pump impeller and throatbush (suction side liners) to reduce the localised gouging wear are outlined. Also, results are presented on the use of composite materials (mix of metal, rubber and ceramic) for throatbush materials to protect specific areas against wear.

"Mining Companies have producing assets in increasingly diverse portions of the world. It is not uncommon that the owner, the design team, the mine contractors and the operators are all based in different countries. While these assets are always subject to the regulatory requirement of those countries there have not been international standards available to review and evaluate these assets. This becomes particularly important when considering safety critical items such as tailings dams, vertical shaft systems and autonomous vehicles to highlight a few. The work currently being completed in ISO ensures these standards will be available and will be generated by and subscribed to on an international basis, thus removing the potential for patriotic partisanship and ensuring safe and predictable systems are installed. This paper will discuss the benefits of the international standards, the structure of the teams and working groups who are generating these standards as well as the process by which the standards are generated. This will allow insight into the creation of the standard and will aim to demonstrate the “neutral” and technically strong manner in which the generation of these standards is achieved. In addition, the paper will discuss the standards which have been produced in the last five years as well as the current standards which are in place. The finale will discuss upcoming work and the timelines in which it is anticipated these will be completed. The ISO/TC 82 – Mining was founded in 1955. This was an active committee until it was thought that the standards at the time were adequate and the Technical Committee was put on “Care and Maintenance”. In 2012 countries lobbied ISO to pull this committee from dormancy and restart it, this happened in in the same year."

An advanced real-time monitoring system, called a "Tapblock Diagnostic System" is under development to help furnace operators manage the operation and maintenance of their tapblocks. The life of a water-cooled tap block in a smelting furnace ranges from several months to several years, depending on the operating conditions. Tapblocks are typically replaced at regular maintenance intervals; a strategy based largely on historical records and not on the actual condition of a particular tapblock. The Tapblock Diagnostic System monitors the tapblock throughout its life and accumulates probable wear events to help the operator assess the residual integrity of the tapblock. Benefits of this system include the ability to provide early warnings of tap block wear to provide improved safety and maintenance planning. Using cooling-water flow together with copper and water temperature measurements, the system performs calculations that compare the present tapblock performance with the expected operating envelope using a multivariate statistical method (Principle Component Analysis). The operating envelope is pre-calculated for a wide range of operating conditions using transient thermal modeling (Computational Fluid Dynamics). A state indicator in the form of a green, yellow and red light is used to inform operators of the tapblock performance and health status.

Abstract- Approaches to mineral potential mapping based on weights of evidence generally use binary maps, whereas, real-world geospatial data are mostly multi-class in nature. The consequent reclassification of multi-class maps into binary maps is a simplification that might result in a loss of information. This paper describes results of using multi-class evidential maps in an extended weights-of-evidence model vis-à-vis results of using binary evidential maps in a simple-weights-ofevidence model. The study area in the south-central part of Aravalli province (western India) hosts a number of SEDEX-type base metal deposits in Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. Recognition criteria for base metal deposits were represented as both multi-class and binary evidential maps. The known mineral deposits were divided into two subsets, viz., the training and the validation subsets. The training subset was used to calculate, for the evidential maps, the weights, contrasts, and posterior probabilities and their variances. The distributions of expected frequencies of base metal deposits estimated from the posterior probabilities and the observed frequencies were compared using standard goodness-of-fit tests to verify conditional independence of the input evidential maps. The posterior probabilities from both the models were mapped and interpreted to classify the study area into zones favorable, permissive, and non-permissive for base metal deposit occurrence. As compared to the simple weights-of-evidence model, the extended weights-of-evidence model results in more robust and finely differentiated posterior probabilities in favorable and permissive zones and has a better prediction rate. The results also reveal that the statistical properties of the weights of evidence, the contrasts, and the posterior probabilities are not significantly degenerated by using multi-class evidential maps in weights-of-evidence modelling.

"During the diametrical compression test, the tensile stress generated near the loading plate is influenced by the contact area between the loading plates and specimen. However, very few studies have determined the contact area. Theoretical or analytical models have shown that for an orthotropic material (i.e., with material properties that differ along each of three mutually orthogonal twofold axes), the maximum tensile stress is generated at the center of disk when the angle of the principal material direction to the loading direction is close to ?/4. The maximum value is almost constant, regardless of the contact area. Conversely, the maximum tensile stress is generated near the loading plate when the angle between the principal material direction and loading direction is small. The maximum value decreases as the contact area increases. Therefore, in the latter case, the influence of the contact area on tensile strength measurement of is significant.In previous studies, the distribution of stresses applied on the loading plate is assumed to be a uniform load. In reality, the applied stress is highest at the center of loading plate and seems to decrease with distance from center. The applied load disappears at the edge of loading plates. In this study, in order to satisfy this boundary condition on the loading plate, the cosine curve is adopted as the distribution of load applied on the loading plates in a theoretical model of the diametrical compression test. Furthermore, the elastic solution using boundary conditions shown in this study is used to obtain the tensile stress distributions on the loading axis for an orthotropic circular plane. These distributions are compared with empirical results obtained under uniform loading with a loading plate or concentrated loading in previous studies."

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and enargite (Cu3AsS4) are among the most important copper sulfides. At present, many known deposits of these minerals are uneconomic to process because they are of too low grade, insufficient size or too remote to be cost effectively treated with conventional technologies that can deal with their refractory nature. Therefore, developing an effective, low cost extraction process for recovery of copper from them is important. The research presented in this paper will deal with potentially cost effective strategies involving catalysed processing, studied under conditions relevant to recycle heap leach conditions. The present account summarises some of the main findings from the research program carried out at Murdoch University between 2014 and 2018 that has investigated the effects of the common leaching parameters, major and minor species present in the leach system and additives on the rate and extent of copper extraction from low-grade ores, in which primary copper sulfide minerals such as chalcopyrite and enargite were the dominant copper minerals. The study involved batch leaching tests, detailed structural and mineralogical characterisation and thermochemical modelling under conditions relevant to heap leaching. The results have demonstrated that silver in particular has a strong catalysing effect on the extraction of copper from ore under the leach recycle conditions and, at an adequate dosage, can effectively overcome surface passivation, enabling almost complete extraction of copper from chalcopyrite as well as enargite. The aim of this paper is to present the effect of the studied additives and to briefly elaborate on the mechanism of the silver catalysed leaching process. In addition, the presence of certain secondary agents was shown to lower the critical dosage of silver and promote extraction. The data from the study allowed the development of a theory for the silver catalysed reaction mechanism, which enables further optimisation and cost-effective application of this strategy in practice. INTRODUCTION Researching the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite is important as it is the most abundant copper mineral in the earth’s crust. The majority of ores containing this mineral are processed by flotation to produce a concentrate, followed by smelting and electrorefining. However, most reserves available nowadays are of low grade or limited in size, and therefore not suitable for this conventional approach. Hydrometallurgical processing via heap leaching with or without the aid of bacteria has been shown to be potentially economical. Chalcopyrite is refractory though and suffers from slow leaching kinetics and poor overall extraction, so understanding the mechanism of how it leaches has received significant attention by researchers working in this field over the past 50 years. The refractoriness, which is the main issue with the hydrometallurgical approach, is generally described as passivation of the chalcopyrite surface whereby a surface coating is formed that blocks the reaction interface or wetting of the chalcopyrite, limiting the copper extraction. Exactly what this layer is made of or how the issue could be overcome has been the subject of intense study and debate for many years. One of the limitations of the work to date is that much of the research focus has been on typical initial leaching conditions, while there has been relatively little research into how the leaching is affected under recycle solution conditions where certain metal ions (Fe, Mg, Al) have often accumulated in the liquor. This occurs because the leach solution exiting a heap contains many species from the dissolution of gangue minerals and typically this solution is returned to irrigate the heap, once the copper has been removed, leading to an accumulation of these species.

The Meadowbank Gold Project, formerly owned by Cumberland Resources Ltd. and currently owned by Agnico Mines Ltd., is currently being developed approximately 70 km north of Baker Lake, Nunavut, in the eastern Canadian Arctic region. The Meadowbank Gold Project currently consists of a series of gold-bearing deposits within relatively close proximity to one another, which are planned to be mined primarily as a truck-and-shovel open pit operation using conventional gold milling and extraction. The mining plan indicates that approximately 20 million tonnes of ore will be mined over a mine life of eight to ten years. The operation will generate approximately 160 million tonnes of mine waste rock and about 20 million tonnes of tailings. The site is located in an area of continuous permafrost with mean annual average air temperature of -11°C and average annual precipitation in the range of 100 to 200 mm. Lakes cover a large portion of the site, including some of the ore deposits. The location of the site and the physical environment pose challenges to development. This paper presents some of the designs considered to effectively manage and utilize the waste products of mining at the project. Note that volumes, tonnages, construction concepts, and data presented in this paper are accurate for the time of writing and are subject to change and modification as the project progresses, additional modelling is carried out, and additional data are obtained.

"Recent trends in Canadian mineral processing were reported in seven areas of interest covered by seventeen technical papers at the 1976 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors, held at Energy, Mines and Resources' Camsell Hall, Ottawa. New milling equipment included the Enviro-Clear thickener, large-volume Outokumpu flotation machines and abrasion-resistant polyurethane screens. Grinding experiences from a variety of milling operations were reported. Opportunities for increased sizing and grinding efficiency were presented. Flotation control by digital computer and by chemical additions were described in two mill operations. Slurry pumping and sampling techniques were described for various operations. Environmental control in milling was reported concerning dust suppression, arsenic removal and tailings disposal. Several aspects of gold milling were described by the most recently commissioned gold mine and by CANMET. Potash operations were reported showing the similarity of processing and process control to that of metallic minerals."

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. The Loch Lamond celestite properties in central Cape Breton Island were mined by Kaiser Celestite Mining Limited from 1970 until 1976. Poor market conditions in J976forced operations to cease. Kaiser holdings included the Lake Enon, MacRae and A mac prospects. A total of about 272,000 tonnes of raw celestite have been mined. Celestite deposits are situated in the Loch Lamond Basin, specifically in Lower Windsor sedimentary rocks. Of the five formations in the Lower Windsor Group, celestite is found in the upper four. Celestite in the Enon Formation occasionally replaces shale that separates stromatolitic dolomite columns; elsewhere in the formation it occurs in association with siltstone and gypsum. Jn the B2 Limestone Formation celestite fills pores or grades between limestone and gypsum. It replaces both limestone and silty limestone conglomerate in the Loch Lamond Formation; this limestone is of unusually high grade (60 to 70% SrSO,J for the area. Evidence indicates that the Uist Formation may hold important celestite reserves. Original celestite mineralization probably resulted from evaporation of seawater on mudflats or 'sabkhas'. Secondary mineralization also may have occurred. Strontium ions could have been leached from pre-existing concentrations and overlying gypsum, moved downdip in groundwater and combined with sulphate rich waters to deposit as celestite in porous B2 limestones.

THE problems relating to the construction and use o{ mining equipment are basically the same as those pertaining to equipment in other industries. It is true that much mining equipment is subjected to an unusually severe combination of shock, high stresses, abrasive wear, and corrosive ? conditions, but in other industries, also, equipment must operate under similar adverse conditions, so that their experiences may readily be applied to the problems of the mining industry. Steel and iron are for obvious reasons the most suitable materials for the construction of the greater part of the equipment used in the mining industry. For a large percentage of uses, the ordinary plain carbon-steels and ordinary or unalloyed cast-iron are, and probably will continue to be for a long rime, entirely satisfactory materials. There are, however, many. conditions which cannot be satisfactorily taken care of by these materials, and alloy steels and irons must be used where the greatest possible economy is desired. In general, alloy steels and irons are used where it is necessary or economically desirable to use materials possessing properties superior to plain carbon-steel or ordinary cast-irons, such as: (a) better strength (b) better wear resistance (c) better corrosion resistance (d) better resistance to high temperatures (e) better resistance to low temperatures or combinations of two or more of these advantages. There are also conditions where materials having other special properties are required, such as, for example, certain magnetic or electrical properties for electrical machinery; but in the great majority of cases, one or more of the five advantages listed are the most desired.
