This paper presents an economic evaluation of resin ion exchange and solvent extraction for the purification and concentration of uraniferous solutions derived from sulphuric acid leaching operations. Capital and operating costs are related to the uranium tenors of pregnant solutions. The conclusions drawn herein apply only to cases where resin and liquid ion exchange are technically feasible process alternatives. It is shown that solvent extraction is economically favoured for pregnant solutions at tenors greater than 0.90 gpl U3O8. Pregnant solutions with tenors below 0.35 gpl U3O8 are best treated by resin ion exchange. Between these concentrations, the economics are marginal and the favoured process is indistinguishable within the limits of accuracy of this study.

The use of electricity in coal mines dates almost from the time when it was realized chat it could be used to produce mechanical power. The first motor put in service underground was installed to drive a small pump nearly 40 years ago, and since then the use of electricity in mines has reached an extent undreamed of at that time. We now find its universal adoption in all the mining countries of the world. Great progress has been made in the development of mining electrical apparatus in the last decade, and excellent and adequate material is now available for the use of electricity underground. Although mining accidents, due to the use of electricity, are not frequent, the miner is justified in demanding chat all electrical apparatus for installation below ground be constructed with a greater degree of safety than that used on the surface. That this view is shared by the authorities of the different mining countries is evidenced by governmental regulations relative to the use, erection, and maintenance of electrical apparatus below ground. Those with which we are specially concerned are the regulations for the installation and use of electricity in the coal mines of Nova Scotia. The potential dangers of electricity in coal mines are: Shock or burns by contact from live parts. Shock or burns by contact with parts which, although normally dead, have become accidentally alive. Fire. Explosion of gas or coal-dust Explosion of apparatus.

"HPAL and POX autoclave vapor-space gasses are vented through an autoclave PCV (Pressure Control Valve). The downstream steam-born mist of liquid droplets and solid particles travels in excess of 1000 m/s with megawatts of kinetic power at temperatures up to 160 C. The characteristics of downstream states often result in problems with corrosion, erosion, noise and vibration. Comprehension of those and related characteristics aids in improved pressure control, overpressure control and autoclave level control. We introduce compressible multiphase flow concepts and constructs germane to such flow including choked flow, continuous phase change, shock waves and supersonic flow plumes. Flow modeling based on first principles quantitatively predicts such flows providing a tool for component sizing and a method to estimate effects of water injection on flow. Insight deduced from modeling aids in mitigation of afore mentioned problems of which we share some from-site examples.INTRODUCTION First principles related to fluid thermodynamics and compressible flow have been employed akin to their application in the rocket industry. We will present the results of the application of those principles conceptually and authentically without mathematical rigour while using language of the pertinent disciplines. The autoclave (AC) vapor space over the slurry of a POX (Pressure Oxidation) or HPAL (High-Pressure Acid Leach) system (depicted in Figure 1) is vented via a PCV (pressure control valve) followed by certain ducting, and perhaps a nozzle, before exiting at atmospheric (typically) pressure. As indicated by its name the PCV controls the AC pressure as the flow control component of a pressure control loop."

"This paper begins with a brief discussion of the geology of the Newfoundland Zinc Mine area. The results of groundwater studies and pumping tests are then presented. It was decided that groundwater in the mine could best be controlled by conventional sump pumping and grouting. The system is fully described, as well as plans for improvements on the method. LocationThe Newfoundland Zinc Mine is located in the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, six miles northeast of Daniel's Harbour. The mine is situated at an elevation of approximately 350 feet above sea level, 5 miles farther inland , west of the long range of mountains which rise abruptly with elevations of over 2,000 feet above sea level.GeologyThe ore deposits occur in lower Ordovician carbonate rocks that form part of the stable St. Lawrence platform, which is mainly composed of (1) the lower Cambrian Labrador group, (2) the upper Cambrian to lower Ordovician St. George group, (3) the disconformity overlying Middle Ordovician limestones and shales of the Table Head formation and, (4) two overlying klippen composed of Cambrian and lower Ordovician rocks.The ore deposit is a Mississippi Valley type of the Tennessee variety, having proven are reserves of 5.3 million tons averaging 9.70/0 zinc from eleven ore zones which exist in an area of 5.5 square miles.Among these ore zones, the L zone is the major underground mining area, and is by far the largest of the known deposits. It has proven are reserves of 3.4 million tons with 11.5% zinc; this underground development has been inprogress since 1974.Stratigraphically, the orebody, which occurs about 300 feet below the disconformities between the Table Head and St. George formations, is situated in the upper St. George formationof lower Ordovician age.The upper St. George formation of the L zone is divided into three main units (Fig . I) : the underlying lower limestone the middle grey dolomite pseudo breccia unit and the overlying siliceous dolomite unit. In this area of the mine, the beds of the St. George formation dip gently west to northwest to 10 to 15 degrees. The orebody, which is generally strata controlled with a southwesterly plunge and which has the form of thin, narrow, but elongate, en-echelon ore bed s, is contained in grey dolomite pseudo breccia. Its dimensions vary from 50 to 900 feet in width and 8 to 120 feet in thickness, and the over-alllength exceed s 6,000 feet.The surficial deposit of the area is a till comprising a heterogeneous mixture of sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders, with an average depth of 20 feet."

"A multipurpose program for a hand-held programmable TJ-59 calculator and PC-100C printer facilitates the evaluation of various mineral processing tests and the calculation of mass and metal balances. Its application is demonstrated by some example problems. Detailed user instructions are given for each application.IntroductionThe program listed in Appendix I is written for a programmable Texas Instruments TI-591 PC-100C calculator I printer combination. The program is applicable for the evaluation of:1) screen analyses;2) flotation test s; and3) mass and metal balances.Each application is demonstrated by an example problem and corresponding detailed user instructions. The ""measured"" data in the examples are fictitious and do not represent a real operation.The steps in using the program are the same for each of the three types of application, viz.:1. The behavior of gold in hydrothermal systems is evaluated as a function of pH and oxygen and sulphur activities at temperatures to 250°C. Under conditions of stability of pyrite and argillic alteration as emblages, gold will be transported as bisulphide complexes. In systems containing significant amounts of arsenic, thioarsenide complexes may be important. Oxidation, dilution and reduction in sulphur activity would cause gold deposition from saturated solutions under these conditions. Gold chloride complexes will predominate under oxidized conditions where hematite or other oxides are stable and depo ition would result from increase in pH and/or reduction . Absorption and coprecipitation are po sible mechanisms of deposition for gold in certain low grade depo it . Low concentrations of gold in the transporting solution combined with the ignificant solubility of gold as bisulphide complexes, sugge t hydrothermal solutions rarely may be saturated with gold and coprecipitation with sulphides may be an important initial depositional process. Recrystallization of the sulphides in the presence of the hydrothermal solution would be re ponsible for release of gold to more table ite . Mr. F. W. Gray: It is not my intention to read my paper as it is too long, so I will touch only on the high lights. The Sydney field is the most favourable example of undersea coal mining that exists, and I have not been able to find anything like it elsewhere. The nearest approach to it is a field in England where the Whitehaven collieries are operating, but it has a lot of faults. The net result of these faults so far met with in the seaward advance of the workings has been to increase, by something over 100 feet, the gain in depth of cover, in a distance of approximately three and three-quarter miles. In the Sydney field there are no faults of any consequence. On the east side, the English measures rise. In Australia the sea bottom fell and the cover became too light. On Vancouver Island the coal ran out, and in Japan the seams are steep and contorted. The Chilian fields resemble our own to some extent. An inundation of two collieries took place there some time ago, due, it is said, to the rise workings being allowed to approach the sea bottom too closely in the vicinity of a fault. The Cape Breton undersea field has been proved over a frontage of about thirty miles and has been attacked and penetrated for a considerable distance along that front. We have passed the prospecting stage and now generally use developed land areas as points of attack to win the undersea coal. Of our mining under the sea, it can be said that, with the exception of No. 1-B and Princess colliery, Sydney Mines, no real attempt has been made to win the undersea coal.

The Ambatovy Nickel Project comprises the development of mine, hydrometallurgical processing facilities and necessary infrastructure in Madagascar, positioning Ambatovy as one of the world’s largest producers of nickel and cobalt from lateritic ore. SNC-Lavalin successfully provided comprehensive Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management (EPCM) services for this major capital project which, apart from its sheer size, scope, and engineering design, represented significant location, infrastructure, labour, environmental and climatic challenges. Today, the project has reached 90% of its nameplate capacity and is in its final performance optimization stage. This paper will discuss the significant project management effort that was required to successfully address the complexity of this major project. It will cover the main project management control systems and the engineering tools and processes used during the detail engineering, procurement, and construction phases to achieve optimum project execution.

"In 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited were retained by Dickenson Mines Limited to increase hoisting capacity from 700 to 1000 tons per day. The hoisting capacity of the present skip-over-cage system could not be increased significantly through design modifications. The other constraint was a minimum of disruption to the current production. The Dickenson shaft was a three-compartment shaft from surface to the 8th level and four compartments before the 8th to the 23rd level. The solution to the problem was to remove the services from the shaft man-way compartment from the 8th level to surf ace by drilling a borehole close to the shaft and rerouting those services through the borehole to the 8th level. A service compartment would then be available from surf ace to the 23rd level.By providing a service hoist in this compartment, the skip hoist would then be free to produce the 1000-tons/day required production. This paper will describe the search for the required hoist and the friction hoist selected for the project, and trace the design modifications required to modify the hoist to suit the Dickenson application and satisfy the Department of Labour safety requirements.The paper has been co-authored by J.S. Redpath Limited and C.L. Tiley Associates, who participated in the design changes and eventual commissioning of the hoist.IntroductionIn the earl y part of 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited conducted an engineering study on the Dickenson Mines Limited No. 1 Shaft materials handling system. The concrete work on the new Britannia mill was started in April, 1922. The erection of steel commenced on July 10th, following. The installation of wood work and machinery , began on November 4th of the same year and was pushed to completion in January, 1923. The new mill building is an all steel structure enclosed with galvanized corrugated steel. All main floors and foundations are of reinforced concrete, which makes the building practically fireproof throughout. The mill building rises on a steep hillside to a vertical elevation of 210 feet and has seven distinct floors, for the various opera-tions. Only one elevator, with 30-foot centres, is used in the entire mill. The building is exceptionally roomy and well lighted, both by day and night. The capacity of the mill, as originally designed, was to be 2000 tons daily, but this tonnage can be readily increased to over 3000 tons daily by making slight changes in the fine grinding equipment; in fact, an average of 2700 tons per 24 hours was maintained throughout the month of September.

PRESSURE information has earned a place of recognition to almost everyone interested in oil and gas production. This interest is due chiefly to the multitude of uses to which it can be put. A sub-surface pressure test, conducted for as little as $60, may yield data worth many times its cost. To the uninformed, the testing techniques may seem complex. Fundamentally, however, they consist merely of the application of common sense. At one time, sub-surface pressure data were used only in identifying individual well problems and in finding appropriate solutions. Today, it is generally acknowledged that sub-surface pres-sure .data are essential for the proper evaluation and exploitation of oil and gas pools. The following is a review of significant applications of sub-surface data with regard to: (A).-Development (B) .-Completion and work-overs (C) .-Production (D) .-Reservoir engineering (E).-Proration (F) .Other applications of pressure data of a more general nature.

The Copper Rand Cu-Au deposit lies within a shear zone which strikes N50-60W and dips steeply southward (50°-55°) and extends over 1. 5 km with a thickness which varies form 350 to 425 metres. Mineralization, inside the shear zone, is structurally controlled by a dilation mechanism which can be explained by a fracture dilatancy model. The principle of this model involves the mechanics of overriding of irregular planes and surfaces of faults and schistosities, These structures are characteristic features of the Copper Rand shear zone. A structural analysis of the shear zone has been carried out to establish relations between the different structures within the shear zone and their evolution with the development of the shear zone. A geomechanical interpretation of the Copper Rand shear zone explains the formation of internal structures such as faults, schistosities and microstructure during the shearing. This interpretation confirms Ramsay's theoretical model on the geomechanical evolutuion of shear zone development, and the experimental work of Morgenstern-Tchalenko on the simulation of shear zones in clay models. The geomechanical interpretation of the shear zone demonstrates that at the onset, subsidiary fracture patterns are developed in second order faults in the following sequence. At peak strength Riedel shears ( R and R') are formed which propagate outside the strength, restraint (P) shears are developed in the thrust attitude within the shear zones. Principal displacement shears (D) develop toward residual strength in the direction of movement. Shear lenses are formed by the interaction of these shear discontinuities and these facilitate the formation of schis tosi ties with the continuation of the shear displacement within the main shear zone. While the main shear zone and the P and D shears within the main shear zone were in continual movement, the Rand R' structures, once formed, retained a simple fracture pattern and moved little outside the shear limits in comparison to the main shear zone. Parts of these structures inside the shear zone were reactivated by subsequent movements and deformed into folds to account for the present attitudes of the HW-1 and HW-2 and HW-3 structures. This geomechanical model for the shear zone with its subsidiary structures (R, R', P and D shears) is also applied on a larger scale to the Dore Lake shear belt and explains the different structures accompanying it. The initial development of the WNW shears (most are ore deposits) was followed by the subsidiary structures of the Dore Lake shear in a north-south stress field and is well defined by the movements characteristic of the different structures. It is concluded that the Dore Lake shear cannot be the prolongation of the McKenzie Narrows shear but it seems that this prolongation relates to the Henderson-Portage shear zone.

"IntroductionMUCH PROSPECTING, exploration, and development work was done for uranium in Canada in 1952, chiefly in northern Saskatchewan and in the Great Bear Lake region of the northwest Territories. The outstanding feature of the year was the great amount of work done in preparing for production at the Ace mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, in the Goldfields region . of Saskatchewan. Many private companies and prospectors were also active in this region. Most of the other parts of Canada where uranium has been found received less attention than during the last few years, partly because so much interest was taken in the Goldfields region.In presenting this short summary of the year's activities now, the writer is handicapped because the season is not yet over; some discoveries have probably not yet been announced, and there has not yet been time to digest the numerous reports that have been sent in by companies and prospectors. In any case it would be impossible to give details for most of the discoveries and properties, because that would require a long report, and because that information is classed as confidential until released by the discoverers and companies concerned. It is only possible, therefore, to give a few generalizations, a brief out-line of the activities in northern Saskatchewan, even briefer ,accounts of the work in other parts of the country, and a few details that property owners have informed the writer he may publish or that have already been published by the owners."

With several “green” applications on the horizon, bismuth has become an even more important minor metal in the smelting and refining of lead. Smelters with a complex sulphide feed invariably deal with bismuth. Its behavior during the smelting of lead in conventional sinter-blast furnace operation is discussed. Because it readily deports to the lead phase during the refining of lead, its separation from refined lead remained unsatisfactory in early lead production. When commercial requirements of bismuth in lead became more stringent early this century, the procedure where by calcium and magnesium is used todebismuthise lead was developed. The present conduct of this 1936 process, the Kroll-Betterton process, is discussed with emphasis on operational improvements.

Western Mines' milling circuit produces three concentrates (copper, lead and zinc), with the tailings being disposed of at the bottom of Buttle Lake. In view of the mine's location and the method of tailing disposal, a comprehensive pollution control program has been in effect since start-up. Changes -in the ore over the past few years have required the use of increasing quantities of sodium cyanide in order to effect a good copper-lead separation. This led to the use of alkaline chlorination for destruction of ?residual cyanide and precipitation of dissolved copper contained in the tailing effluent. The development of Western Mines' alkaline chlorination plant is discussed in detail, including initial test work and the evolution of procedures leading to the present operation. The current monitoring program is also reviewed.

"IntroductionAT NORANDA, the strength of the ore and wall-rocks per-mitted mining in large open stopes. While some of the orebodies were small and could be mined out in one stope, in most cases their size was such that it was essential that ore pillars be left during the first stage of mining. In these cases, backfilling has been necessary for ground control and to facilitate the later recovery of the ore in these pillars.This paper discusses the development of the •backfill and •its use in pillar recovery.GeologyThe ore bodies at Noranda occur as replacement deposits in a block of rhyolite flows and breccias, bounded on the north by the Horne Creek fault and on the south by the Noranda Andesite fault. Mineralization consists of pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, gold, and various tellurides.The main orebody is a massive sulphide deposit designated the 'H' orebody. It is elliptical in plan, measuring roughly 400 feet by 800 feet, and is divided into two zones -Upper H, extending from surface to the 1,500-foot level, and Lower H, from the 1 ,500-foot level to just below the 3,000-foot level.Mining MethodsOpen stope mining in both Upper H and Lower H zones has been fully described in previous publications (1). A brief review only of the mining methods will be given here."

This paper describes the results of testwork for the treatment of Ambatovy laterite ore by a pressure acid leach process, with recovery of the soluble nickel and cobalt values as mixed sulphide intermediate by precipitation with hydrogen sulphide, and subsequent refining of the mixed sulphide to nickel and cobalt metals. These process development studies were carried out primarily in 2004, as part of a bankable feasibility study for the Ambatovy Nickel Project. The Ambatovy orebody is located in Madagascar. The mini pilot plant testwork was carried out in the Dynatec metallurgical laboratory in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The results of the testwork were very encouraging, including nickel and cobalt extractions in the range of 95.5% to 97.0%, and 94.0% to 97.0%, respectively, in the ore leach step with sulphuric acid. High recoveries of nickel and cobalt were achieved throughout the remaining process steps, yielding separate nickel and cobalt metal powders with better than acceptable purity.
