"Laboratory and miniplant testwork was carried out to reject uranium from an Iron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) deposit that contains an average of 60-70 ppm uranium with high variability. The dominate copper bearing mineral is chalcopyrite with minor bornite and trace covellite. The main gangue minerals are iron-rich chlorite, quartz and magnetite. The main uranium-containing mineral is uraninite (UO2). Downstream processes require the maximum uranium level of no more than 80 ppm in final copper concentrate.Mineralogical examination reveals that uraninite particles are finely disseminated with grain size of less than a few microns in the deposit requiring fine regrind in order to liberate uraninite from chalcopyrite particles. A lab flowsheet was developed to include ultrafine regrind of the rougher concentrate to the particle size of 80% passing 11-13 µm with up to four stages of recleaning in flotation columns. Finer regrind to 80% passing 5-6 µm may continue to improve liberation but does not decrease uranium level in the final concentrate. In each of the successive recleaning stages by flotation column after fine regrind, uraninite is rejected into the column tailings, with the final copper gold concentrate containing less than 70 ppm uranium from a feed containing 83 ppm uranium. The conceptual flowsheet was further tested in an integrated, continuous miniplant showing average 94% copper recovery with average 74 ppm uranium. The uraninite particles that report to the final concentrate are either locked with chalcopyrite or entrained as liberated particles of less than 5 µm in size.IntroductionIron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) deposits are copper and gold ores hosted within a large body of iron oxide and are significant ore deposits for copper and gold (Williams, et al., 2005). These deposits can also contain economic levels of other metals such as uranium and rare earth elements. The known sizes of IOCG deposits range from 10 to 4,000 million tonnes with grade of 0.2-5% copper and 0.1-3 g/t gold. One of the greatest IOCG deposits is Olympic Dam in South Australia. It is the fourth largest copper deposit and the largest uranium deposit in the world. Gold and silver in the deposit also contribute significantly to the total revenue."

"A Pilot Plant was installed in one of the grinding circuits of the Dome Mill, Ontario, Canada. Tests were conducted on a KCCD12 Knelson Concentrator to systematically analyze the effect of operating variables on the performance. The main objective of this test work was to explore the effect of very coarse (6 mm) feed size on GRG recovery and performance of the Knelson concentrator. Preliminary results have shown that coarse feed size is deleterious to maximizing recovery. Size-by-size GRG recoveries have shown an unusual trend in the sense that recoveries do not decrease monotonically with decreasing gold particle size. Similar trend observed in one other full-scale unit has been compared. The observed trend is probably linked to the feed size distribution and top size.INTRODUCTIONKnelson Concentrators are the most widely used semi-continues centrifuge gravity separation units for the recovery of gold and platinum group minerals (Xiao and Laplante 2004). The main advantages over the competing centrifugal gravity units are their design, operating simplicity and good separation efficiency that make them the most common choice for gravity circuit. Despite some characterization at bench scale and a limited characterization at full scale, there is a lack of a comprehensive study of impact of operating variables on efficiency that reflects realistic full scale operating practice. GRG characterization studies, at bench scale, on these units provide information about the occurrence of gold in ore samples but fail to provide adequate information about the effect of operating variables for full-scale units. It is well known fact that such work is difficult to undertake on full-scale units owing to the difficulties involved in sampling and systematic variation of operating parameters. To tackle these problems, a pilot facility consisting of a 12-in CD Knelson Concentrator, a feed screen and tailing pump was installed in one of the grinding circuits of Dome Mill. This paper describes the work carried out and the results.Porcupine Joint Venture (PJV)Porcupine Joint Venture was formed in 2002 between Placer Dome Inc. and Kinross Gold Corporation. The JV utilizes the milling capacity of the Dome Mill to process ore from Placer Dome and Kinross mines. The Dome Mill circuit has gravity concentration, cyanidation and CIP circuits to recover gold. Gravity recovery has been used at Dome Mill since inception to recover gold: first by using conventional jigs, which were eventually replaced by two Knelson Concentrators in 1993, one in each of the grinding circuits. Three more Knelsons joined the circuit in 2002 to improve gravity recovery. An Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was also added in 2002 to process gold concentrates replacing shaking tables (Chong et al 2004)."

In developing a method to evaluate plant operating data and results from his grindability test, Fred Bond developed the ""Third Theory of Comminution."" "In 2001, the Catholic University of Chile undertook a maintenance benchmarking study of six open pit copper mines having mill capacities varying between 18,000 t/d and 156,000 t/d, and collectively responsible for 58% of Chilean copper production. This paper describes the methodology used to conduct the study, as well as the overall results. Key performance indices were selected to measure the effectiveness, efficiency, and development of the maintenance process. Using a balanced scorecard philosophy, these indicators were divided into client satisfaction, financial, internal process, and learning and growth indices.Maintenance was found, on average, to be responsible for 44% of mine production costs. Percentage planned maintenance of equipment fleets was found to be low by world standards, averaging 35%, 56%, and 44%, respectively, for blasthole drill, shovel, and haul truck fleets. Fleet availabilities were found to be significantly influenced by the percentage of planned maintenance achieved, while maintenance cost per equipment was found to decrease non-linearly with increases in percentage planned maintenance. Investment in technical training (including planned maintenance practice) was found to be low by global standards. The paper concludes that fleet availability and maintenance costs in Chilean open pit operations could be considerably improved by improving and/or developing maintenance planning standards, and investing in training personnel in planned maintenance techniques"

Two needs in the mining industry, to enable overall process improvements, are open systems and network connectivity in underground mines. The Pando project, a collaboration between Symboticware, Vale and Xstrata Nickel, and supported by CEMI, addresses these issues, and leverages the solution platform to deliver intelligent applications. An open system is one that uses publicly available standards for its key interfaces. Vendor-neutrality and ease of information flow are two main benefits that result from the use of open systems. By facilitating the interoperability of systems, open systems allow information to be available when and where it is needed for decision support. Network connectivity in underground mines is typically limited, with hotspots in strategically chosen areas that are relatively static. Mobile equipment moving through a mining work cycle experiences intermittent connectivity; in this situation, seamless remote equipment monitoring is impossible. The Pando project establishes an open technology platform, adhering to the IREDES and OPC UA standards. It enables the collection and integration of information generated by mobile equipment? seamlessly while there is a network connection, and as a store-and-forward gateway to manage intermittent connectivity. The platform capabilities are leveraged to support embedded intelligent applications. This open platform, the SymBot, is a rugged hardware and software device. The platform complies with open standards for industrial automation and systems interoperability. The SymBot platform is capable of providing advanced real-time decision support at the device level, and is designed to be remotely configurable. Applications being developed through the Pando project include engine monitoring, a dynamic load weighing system, machine location monitoring and automated activity monitoring including production and maintenance reporting.

In Alberta, oil sands bitumen is utilized for synthetic crude oil production by surface mining, bitumen extraction followed by primary (coking) and secondary (catalytic hydrotreating) upgrading processes, or by catalytic hydrocracking and hydrotreating replacing the primary and secondary upgrading processes. Oil sands tailings, composed of water, sands, silt, clay and residual bitumen, is produced as a byproduct of the bitumen extraction process. Several processes have been proposed for the treatment of oil sands tailings, resulting in different recovered water characteristics, consolidation rates and consolidated solid characteristics, which may have effects on the performance of the overall plant operations. A process for the same purpose has been developed by treating the oil sands tailings with CaO lime and CO2 and thickening it using a suitable thickener. In this process a release water of acceptable properties is recovered in a short retention time, which makes it possible to recycle the recovered water, probably after a reconditioning treatment, as warm as possible to improve the thermal efficiency of the extraction process. The paper presents the theory and laboratory results for the CaO and CO2 thickening of low temperature flotation tailings. The water release rates, segregation potential of the thickened underflow and chemistry of the release water are shown and discussed. It is suggested that in using the proposed process, the thickened tailings underflow can be disposed for further consolidation, or combined with the coarse tailings to produce Blended Composite Tailings, corresponding to the Composite Tailings process in the existing hot water extraction plants.

"A new mineral sands operation is being developed in Georgia by Southern Ionics, Inc. (SII). Prevailing mineralogy and certain design constraints required detailed testing and circuit analysis to create a robust separation processes. The floating wet concentrator plant (WCP) and mineral separation plant (MSP) flow sheets were designed based on historical testing information and recent SII test campaigns on various composite feed samples. The flow sheets were finalized through rigorous process and orebody sequence modeling.The process uses traditional physical separation equipment; however a new MT spiral, the MG12, was selected for use on board the WCP for roughing duty. The MG12 spiral is a two-stage, twelve-turn spiral that has been proven to achieve very high recoveries of heavy minerals. The floating plant includes feed desliming operations, a central MT surge bin for optimum spiral circuit feed control and ancillary operations for concentrate and tailings handling. Scrubbed heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) is then transported to the MSP for concentration of the titanium and zirconium bearing mineral fractions.The testing, flowsheet development, and plant design will be described and explained, and a brief summary of the current project status will be given.IntroductionSouthern Ionics Inc. "There is a general consensus that, in order to widen the utilization of Western Canadian coals, a major effort must be devoted to their transportation, utilization of fines, beneficiation and mining techniques. It is postulated that the concept studied extensively over the last four years at Alberta Research Council (ARC), and based on a combination of hydraulic mining, selective agglomeration with bitumen and/ or heavy oil, pipeline transportation and oil recovery from agglomerates, offers a particularly attractive solution to the problems associated with extraction, beneficiation, transportation and utilization of Western bituminous and subbituminous coals. Results of preliminary experimental work on the feasibility of pipeline agglomeration of metallurgical coal and hydraulic transportation of agglomerates are presented and discussed in the context of conventional agglomeration techniques in stirred tanks. IntroductionAlberta is endowed with enormous reserves of low-sulphur coals which could attract considerable attention of potential customers, but the remote location of this province handicaps its competitiveness on the world market. At Creighton Mine, magnitude events are a regular occurrence due to depth and major seismically-active structures. Over the last ten years, major advances have been made in research and development to develop strategies for the management of these major events. Today, the number of rockbursts has been drastically reduced at the mine and damage due to seismic events, when they occur, is often minimal. This paper describes the evolution and implementation of appropriate geomechanics strategies, designs, and practical ground control measures undertaken for the management of seismicity at Vale Inco?s Creighton Mine. A description of the research and development approach, implementation, and ground control strategy is provided for placement of enhanced support systems to manage the consequences of magnitude events at Creighton

The current status of the international zinc market is summarized, and a supply /demand outlook is presented for the next five years. A number of technical problems facing the industry are outlined. Introduction ZINC has sometimes been called the unknown metal. Considering that on a world basis it ranks third among non-ferrous metals in production and consumption, zinc retains a certain modesty. It has no distinctive colour like copper, lacks the low density of aluminum or magnesium and is not always easy to identify as a product. The 'spangle' of galvanized steel is probably zinc's most distinguishing feature. The purpose of this article is to develop an over-all review of zinc. Starting with the current position of the metal, the major factors that will shape its future will be described so that an assessment of the outlook for zinc can be made.

"IntroductionTHE ZINC-BASE die casting alloys in common usage contain approximately 4 per cent aluminum as the major alloy element. In addition, they contain about 0.05 per cent Mg .and may• have a small amount .of copper. These are usually the only •elements intentionally present.Small amounts of some impurities have been shown to have a deleterious effect on the properties of these alloys and therefore the impurities are kept low by starting with '99.99%' zinc.The reasons for holding the aluminum content at 4 per cent are not clear. Some statements appear in the literature that higher aluminum increases the brittleness, but probably the chief reason was the relative price of zinc and of aluminum when 4% alloys became firmly established. At that time, aluminum was three to four times the price •of zinc on a weight •basis. Recent prices, roughly equivalent per lb., make aluminum considerably cheaper than zinc on a volume basis and suggest that increased aluminum content would result in a decrease in the cost per piece due to the lower density of the alloy.Little information could be found in the literature and, therefore, it was decided to determine some physical properties of the higher aluminum zinc-base alloys made from high-purity zinc."

The deportment and speciation of trace elements during mining and minerals processing is becoming an area of increasing concern with regards to potential health and environment risks. The use of chemical modelling can enhance our basic understanding of the deportment and speciation of trace metals under conditions present in gold processing solutions, and assist in laboratory and field investigations. In this paper, we report the results of chemical speciation modelling using the JESS software package for the trace toxic elements Pb, Cd, Hg, Se and Te in cyanidation solutions of varying salinity and relate the models to experimental data. The speciation of mercury is examined in detail.

"In 2007, Noront Resources Inc. discovered the high grade nickel copper PGE deposit in northwestern Ontario in a region now known as the Ring of Fire. Since the initial discovery, Noront has advanced the Eagle¹s Nest Project and in September 2012 released a feasibility study for the development of the Eagle¹s Nest Project. This paper summarizes the results of this recent study and outlines additional work planned in the next stages of project development. INTRODUCTIONThe following paper summarizes the findings of the recently completed feasibility study on Noront Resources Ltd.’s Eagle’s Nest Project. The feasibility study was compiled into a NI 43-101 report by Micon International. This paper is intended to summarize the major technical findings and for complete information, interested parties can find the entire NI 43-101 report at www.norontresources.com or on SEDAR.LOCATIONThe McFaulds Lake project area, which includes the Eagle’s Nest deposit, is located at approximately UTM 5844000 N and 547000 E, and between approximately 52º42’ and 52º50’ N latitude and 86º06’ and 86º24’ W longitude, approximately 250 km west of the community of Attawapiskat on James Bay and 575 km northwest of Timmins. The closest all-season accessible community to the McFaulds Lake project area is Nakina, 300 km to the south, where there is a paved airstrip, in addition to all weather road and railroad access (see Figure 1).The First Nations communities of Webequie and Ogoki/Marten Falls are located 90 km west and 120 km south southeast of McFaulds Lake, respectively. Both communities are served by regularly scheduled air service, primarily from Thunder Bay; both Thunder Bay and Timmins serve as support centres for the James Bay communities and the exploration projects in the area."

"The Central Canada Potash facility, a division of Noranda Metal Industries Limited, is located 3 kilometres south of the junction of Highways 16 and 2, about 75 kilometres south-east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The site occupies 26~ hectares of land and includes well-equipped machine and electrical _shops, a 325,000-tonne muriate storage and reclaim warehouse, a stores warehouse, processing plant (mill), two mine shafts (one for production, the other for servicing and personnel transport), as well as a two track product loading complex. Access to the site is by road and railway (CN and CP Rail). Suppliers of operating and maintenance use both means of transportation, whereas muriate shipments are entirely by railway.Currently five continuous mining machines - one a Goodman 526 borer and four Marietta 911-A units produce some 10,500 tonnes of ore per operating day. A smaller Voest-Alpine Af.1-100 boom type miner is used for floor cutting which was previously done by a production unit. In order to maintain safe, competent ground conditions only 35 percent of the total ore is extracted. At this rate mine reserves are deemed adequate for about 100 years. The plant has operated since August 1969 and has a current practical annual capacity of 1,270,000 tonnes of muriate. As of June 30, 1981, some 11.9 million tonnes of muriate had been produced from 31.4 million tonnes of ore. Of the total muriate, 6.1 million tonnes was granular, 4.8 million was coarse, and 1.0 million was standard. No standard product has been made since August 1978."

A series of field and laboratory evaluations were conducted in order to characterize the effects of a Mann+Hummel SMF-AR® diesel particulate filter (DPF) system on the aerosols and criteria gases emitted by diesel engines. This system, with a durable sintered metal filter media and available active regeneration via an on-board electrical heater, has been considered for retrofitting diesel engines used in light- and medium-duty underground mining applications. Two DPF systems were installed on a forklift and locomotive from the underground mining fleet of the Vale?s Creighton Mine and evaluated over a 1,500-hour trial. This evaluation was complemented with field and laboratory emissions tests. The field tests were performed on the vehicles while at the Creighton Mine surface shop. During those tests, the emissions were assessed for the engines operated at hydraulic stall, high idle, and low idle conditions. The laboratory tests were executed at the diesel engine emissions laboratory at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), here the DPF removed from the forklift was further evaluated at four steady-state engine operating conditions as well as at transient conditions using a custom-designed duty cycle. Very similar methodologies were used during field and laboratory tests to measure concentrations of aerosols and criteria gases in the diesel exhaust, both upstream and downstream of the DPF system. The concentrations and size distributions of aerosols were measured using a fast mobility particle sizer spectrometer, in exhaust diluted by a partial flow dilution system. The concentrations of CO2, CO, NO, and NO2 were measured in the raw exhaust using a Fourier transform infra-red spectrometer. Both field and laboratory emissions tests showed that the evaluated DPF systems were very effective in reducing aerosol emissions from all tested engines, and for all test conditions. The systems were found to have minor effects on gaseous emissions from those engines. The findings from this study should help the mining industry to better understand the benefits and challenges of using DPF systems to control the exposure of underground miners to diesel aerosols.

"Gravity concentration remains the main separation method for fine iron ore and is used extensively for treating various minerals. Gravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid, such as water or air (Wills, 2006).Spirals concentrators are one of the gravity concentration equipment used for beneficiation of minerals. Spirals are typically used for processing of fine minerals (-1mm) size fraction. The main operating variables for a spiral concentrator are the feed rate, the solids concentration, the wash water addition and the position of the cutters or splitters used to separate the tailings, middling and concentrate streams (Sadeghi, Bazin & Renaud, 2014).The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of feed rate, solids concentration and wash water on grade and recovery on iron ore material. The Multotec SC20HC/7 WW spiral was used for the experimental test work. The spiral was tested at varying solids concentration and feed rate. The wash water rate was also varied to establish the best washing rate. The splitter positions were kept constant. Optimization of these variables is expected to provide optimum conditions for a good compromise between grade and recovery.INTRODUCTIONSpiral concentrators are simple low energy consuming devices that separate minerals mainly on the basis of density. Spirals are widely used in mineral processing as a method for preconcentration and have proven to be metallurgically efficient and cost effective.Spirals have a wide application, they are used in iron ore processing, coal, gold, chromites, mineral sands, glass sands, and in soil cleaning.Separation on a spiral is achieved through a combination of forces that act on particles as they move down the trough of the spiral. The main forces known to act on the particle on a spiral are the gravitational forces, centrifugal force, hydrodynamic drag, and lift and friction forces (Kapur & Meloy, 1998). Apart from the forces acting on a spiral, the properties of the slurry flowing on a spiral including, solids concentration, feed rate and wash water also plays an important role in the separation on the spiral.The relationship between separation efficiency and feed rate was shown to be linear, with a decrease in efficiency at higher flow rates. Previous work on flow profile by Holland - Batt (1990) indicated that any increase in the feed rate to a spiral results in a greater part of the additional flow volume reporting to the outside of the trough. The flow on the outside of the trough becomes energized and consequence to that the heavy particles find it hard to settle and escape this region to the inner region. This effect has a high impact on recovery of heavy minerals, since any increase in volumetric flow on the spiral is not made available for recovery in the inner region of the spiral."

Peñasquito is Mexico's largest gold producer, consisting of two open pits - Peñasco and Chile Colorado - containing gold, silver, lead and zinc. Over the next three years, mining activities in the pit are expected to be focused on lower grade ore in the upper parts of the Peñasco pit while stripping is emphasized to ensure an economically optimal pit shell design to maximize the net asset value of the operation. By 2019, Peñasquito’s gold production is expected to benefit from an improvement in mined grades as it recommences mining higher grades at the bottom of the Peñasco pit and significantly enhanced metallurgical recoveries with the planned completion of the Pyrite Leach Project ("PLP").

Les remblais en pâte cimentés sont de plus en plus utilisés dans les exploitations minières souterraines. Une autre alternative d?utilisation du remblai en pâte consiste à le pomper et à le stocker dans des empilements de surface. En plus d?avoir des avantages d?un point de vue de stabilité physique des ouvrages, le remblai en pâte cimenté en surface permettrait également de stabiliser les contaminants dans la matrice du remblai à l?aide du processus de solidification et de stabilisation. Dans cette étude, des remblais en pâte constitués d?un résidu minier sulfuré renfermant beaucoup d?arsenic et de différents liants ont été testés afin d?évaluer la stabilisation des contaminants dans la matrice de remblai. La méthode utilisée pour évaluer la stabilisation et la solidification des contaminants est le test de lixiviation en extracteur de Soxhlet. Les résultats géochimiques issus de ces essais ainsi que la caractérisation chimico-minéralogique des remblais lixiviés ont été analysés pour comprendre les phénomènes chimiques présents dans les remblais durant le temps de cure. Les résultats obtenus montrent que les sulfures présents dans les remblais étudiés (pyrite FeS2 et arsénopyrite FeAsS) s?oxydent et provoquent la dissolution des hydrates les plus vulnérables (dissolution de la portlandite Ca(OH)2 et/ou décalcification des gels CSH).
