Depending on material commodity market conditions, material contained in open pit waste disposals can hold potential value, Segregating subgrade material into separate disposals i.e. 'sub ore' stockpiles, affords open pit operators the opportunity to modify production strategies to reflect changes in market conditions. Discussion of the concept of subore stockpiling is presented. A two-step mathematical model and a nonlinear programme are employed to answer questions such as, 'how can the value of sub-ore material be determined to distinguish sub-ore from true waste?' and 'when and at what rate should sub-ore be processed?'

The incentive to control coal flotation circuits arises because of disturbances, from plant operating practices and variations in feed coal characteristics, which result in large amounts of fine coal being lost in circuit tailings streams and lower grade concentrates being produced. Additionally, the flowrates and compositions of con-centrates and tailings streams can have significant effects on dewater-ing brocesses. A universal control strategy for these circuits cannot be developed. Rather, three major groups of variables must be con-sidered during strategy development: coal characteristics; circuit design and operating practice; and the variables selected to control the process. The second. and third groups-are discussed in this paper and examples from studies in operating plants are presented.

Many mining operations developed in the last 15 years have not performed to expectations. Problems experienced include lower than planned development and production rates, geotechnical/stability problems, unplanned dilution, reduced metallurgical performance and unbudgeted capital/operating costs. Most of these problems can be directly attributed to decisions made on the basis of geoscience interpretations and estimates. Recent case studies continue to provide examples of unplanned events linked to the use of geoscience information. These studies illustrate the need to improve the way geological information is used in mine feasibility and operations. Comprehensive assessment of the consequences of inappropriate technical decision making is still rare; however, the information that is reported highlights the significant financial impact on a companyÆs bottom line.

Studies of human relations are being made by a team of psychologists within management and in the community of Kambalda as a whole. Some of the first results are discussed with reference to extensions required in management when it also has to run a mining town. Implications are noted for town planning policies of the attitudes and preferences of the population with regard to housing and to other major planning areas. Some of the theoretical and practical difficulties of 'planning the human ecology' are outlined.

An electrochemical study of the dissolution of gold in aerated cyanide solution has shown that the dissolution rate is determined b the nature of the surface. A passive film (probably a basic cyanide formed at .o.6 V vs a saturated calomel electrode inhibits both the ca.thodi reduction of oxygen. The Sheep Creek Project lies 30 km north of White Sulphur Springs in the Little Belt Mountains of central Montana. Homestake Mining Co. discovered base metal anomalous pyrite beds downdip from gossans in 1974. Cominco American began exploration in 1976, consolidated adjacent properties, and joint ventured with BHP-Utah International in 1985. High . grade Cu and Cu/Co mineralization intersected in a 1985 drill hole led to discovery of two separate deposits. The project area now covers over 175 km2 and is being actively explored for Cu, Co and Zn in a shale hosted bedded sulphide system.Proterozoic Belt Supergroup sediments host the Sullivan Pb/Zn deposit, stratabound Ag/Cu ores of the Revett Formation at Troy and Rock Creek, and base metal rich pyrite beds at Sheep Creek.

The Palmarejo, Guadalupe and La Patria Silver-Gold epithermal vein deposits occur in south-westernChihuahua state, Mexico. The veins are hosted in a volcano-sedimentary sequence that comprises andesitic to basaltic resedimented volcaniclastic rocks, together with less abundant coherent and pyroclastic facies and minor red-beds. The host sequence is part of the Lower Volcanic Series, and formed in a magmatic arc environment during the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Laramide Orogeny. The Lower Volcanic Series is overlain unconformably by an extensive sequence of Miocene rhyolitic ignimbrites, known as the Upper Volcanic Series. At this time, it is uncertain whether epithermal mineralisation was related to andesitic intrusions (85 Ma) and/or Oligocene rhyolitic dykes (25 Ma). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. During the century past geologists have discovered an extraordinary range of mineral resources. It is somewhat surprising, in view of their success, to look back and find that geologists have been concerned through the entire time about the adequacy of resources to meet future needs. They continue to express concern. The basis of their concerns seems to rest as much in social issue as in evaluations of geology.Demand for mineral resources is driven by population and by per capita consumption. Both have grown steadily over the past century, and both continue to rise. In 1890 the global population was about 1.7 billion, people. It has now exceeded 5 billion and the growth rate is such that by the year 2000, the global population will be between 6~ and 7 billion. A very wide range of technologies are utilised in the mining and processing of ores and a great deal of effort is expended in the development of ænew technologiesÆ to improve mining performance and economics. Traditionally, technology and people have been treated as separate aspects of an operation, when in fact they are inextricably linked. The successful implementation of new technologies is entirely dependent upon the actions, enthusiasm and skills of people, both as individuals and working in groups. This paper discusses the role of technology in mining and how new technologies are implemented by the industry. The paper argues that existing technologies have not been fully or adequately utilised and that effort should be re-focussed on the implementation of technologies that have been taken for granted for many years. The need for greater emphasis to be placed on the management of the human-technology interface is discussed.

Modern minerals projects face serious challenges in earning and maintaining acceptance by their key stakeholders. Factors which underpin effective response to managing these challenges include consideration of public affairs issues from the earliest planning stages, building robust alliances with a range of influential partners, developing a level of transparency in all operations and decision-making and integrating activities towards resolving key strategic issues. Effective community relations is vital and there are a number of elements common to the best approaches. These include senior management support and involvement, appropriate involvement in project decisions and activities by community members and company responsiveness to community expectations. The project's operations manager and executive team must fully commit to developing the capability and processes to meet these challenges. They require a whole of project response and it is not an option to manage them peripherally.

A philosophy is presented that new graduates in mining and metallurgy should be equipped to use computers during their under- graduate courses, should be aware of the capabilities and costs of a wide range of computing equipment, and should receive sufficient stimulus to become involved in applying computers for the benefit of the mineral industry. A program is presented in which computer applications and "hands on" involvement with computers are integrated into the progressive stages of the undergraduate courses in Mining and Metallurgy. In this respect, the role of the computer is to assist the student by performing time consuming tasks, to demonstrate the industrial applications of computing, to extend the scope and complexity of the tutorial, assignment and project work which can be undertaken by the student, and to provide the essential first stepping stones toward continued useful involvement with computers during the graduate's working life.

In recent decades the awareness of environmental issues by the general public has developed at an accelerat- ing rate. This is the result of a number of factors including more scientific knowledge of environments and of the impacts of modern society upon them, higher levels of education, the opportunity for people to travel more, and the success of the various communication media in bringing in- formation to the communities of the world about such environmental crises or threats as the smogs of Los Angeles and London, the Torrey Canyon and Santa Barbara oilspills, Minamata disease in Japan, the spread of the Crown of Thorns starfish, the disposal of toxic industrial wastes into the Upper Rhine, the discovery of high mercury and zinc contents in marine foods in southern Australian waters, and the proposal to mine limestone at Precipitous Bluff in Tasmania.

The Professional Standards Act responds to the growing problem of professional liability by introducing a mechanism whereby professional associations can have schemes approved. Those schemes include a cap on liability; a requirement for compulsory insurance; the development of risk management strategies; and the establishment of a complaints and disciplinary system. The Act is also designed to support and develop the concept of self-regulation by the members of occupational associations who provide services to the community by providing them with those tools. It implicitly accepts that self-regulation is preferable to statutory regulation and that self-regulation serves the interest of the community and of the providers of services. The Act arose from a review of professional liability commenced in 1988. The Attorney General's Department produced an Issues Paper, released in September 1989, which outlined in detail the extent of the problem. This was widely circulated and an extensive number of comment were received.

Laser ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) analysis of fluid inclusions trapping mineralising solutions in major porphyry-copper deposits indicates that copper concentrations can reach 103 - 104 ppm in both dilute, CO2-bearing fluids and in high salinity brines. Non-Cl transport of Cu is implicated. Au has been determined at 0.2 - 0.4 ppm in the low salinity fluids and may be co-transported with Cu. In contrast, high concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn and Pb are only attained in brines and correlate strongly with Cl-indicating chloride transport. Physical and/or temporal separation of these fluid types can therefore producemetal fractionation within porphyry systems. Evidence concerning the behaviour of Mo is less clear but brine transport appears to be favoured; phase separation is one mechanism that may account for the fractionation of Mo from Cu and the formation of quartz-molybdenite veins. A number of forecasting methods are available to mine management to help predict the most likely outcome of some particular event thus enabling management to make more cost effective decisions. Three general classes of models can be used to predict future events qualitative, structural and time series, the most effective method in most cases being time series. Time series methods can be applied to predict future events from a series of past observations. Various time series techniques are reviewed with a comparison of their relative advantages and disadvantages.

Gold deportment and ore characterisation studies are key tools in gaining an appropriate understanding of complex gold ores for process development and optimisation. These studies have historically involved imprecise chemical methods with slow and costly optical microscopy for gold identification. The traditional approach requires highly skilled petrographers, is prone to human error, and is not scalable, reducing the usefulness in practical analysis. The proposed methodology utilises a decision tree and knowledge base in a staged approach to gold ore characterisation, building up progressively more detailed information about the sample mineralogy, gold deportment and key mineral properties, as the process is followed. Whilst the automated QEMSCAN« system is used for mineral and gold identification, interactive and focused data analyses are used to give more efficient and accurate results. This is complemented by smart sample preparation and chemical methods to enhance and validate the data, making the staged approach methodology reliable, scalable and therefore practical and economical.

The mining industry represents a small part of the international economy. Comprising few large companies, the industry exhibits volatile returns and over the past 25 years has failed to produce a long-term return that meets its cost of capital. It is not surprising, therefore, that the minerals extraction and processing industry is under considerable pressure from the investment community to lift its game. Management and boards are responding to this pressure by implementing more exacting cost control measures, capital management programs and through the process of consolidation. However, the cost of capital to the industry appears to have increased in recent years and investor attention seems to be preoccupied with the ænewÆ economy. Both of these influences will conspire to raise the bar for acceptable industry economic performance. This paper provides a useful snapshot of the minerals and extraction industry as it enters the 21st century. It remains cautious about future performance other than to conclude that single digit returns are likely to prevail, albeit at higher levels than over the past 25 years.

Have we been able to capture the essence of Dr GeorgeÆs statement in our current safety management systems and have we been able to capture the lessons from the past? Drawing upon 25 years of experience in the mining industry we explore what was done in the past, how this related to Dr GeorgeÆs statement and how the industry has progressed to the current safety management systems. We review the safety management system used by Roche Mining and demonstrate how it has improved safety outcomes for Roche. We then look to the future û are there new challenges? Are the current management systems equipped to cater for these new challenges and deliver continued improvement in safety outcomes? There will always be a desire to improve the industryÆs safety outcomes and so how are future generations going to achieve the improvement in safety outcomes?
