The operation of a one tonne submerged combustion pilot plant for the recovery of copper from anode furnace and converter slags is described and the effects of variables discussed. Using coal as reductant, copper levels of anode furnace slag were lowered to 1% or less, with batch times of approximately 120 minutes. Fluxing with limestone was required to produce a fluid slag at temperatures of 1200 - 1300¦C. For converter slags, reduction to 0.5% Cu or less was achieved in batch times of 35 minutes. Asarco's newest concentrator near Troy, Montana, began operation in October 1981, and is presently milling ore at its design capacity of 7,710 metric tonnes per day. The underground room-and-pillar mine produces a readily floatable copper sulfide- native silver ore in a quartzite gangue. Major sulfide minerals are bornite and chalcocite with minor chalcopyrite; fine grained native silver occurs with the copper sulfides. There are also minor amounts of native copper and copper oxides in the ore. A rougher copper-silver concentrate is floated, reground and cleaned twice. Cleaner tail is scavenged, and the scavenger concen- trate is combined with rougher concentrate for regrinding. Rougher flotation tailing and scavenger tailing make up final mill tailing which is disposed of by spigotting into a tailing dam located 10.5 km from the mill site.

An increase in the silver to gold ratio with increase in depth in the main ore shoot of the Crown-Crescent lode in the Emperor gold mine, Fiji, was found to be due mainly to vertical zoning of gold-silver tellurides. The zoning resulted from a two-stage sequence of ore mineralization.The application of some recent studies of the synthetic Au-Ag-Te system to natural gold-silver telluride assemblages is discussed.

The development of computers is examined in the context of the mining industry. The risk element is given as a reason for the slow introduction of the computer into mining. Dealing with mining's uncertainty is seen as a major role for computers. The use of computers is traced from early accounting applications to current involvement with all aspects of mining. The problems associated with increasing use of computers and their impact on management is discussed in depth. Disenchantment of management is thought to arise from unfulfilled expectations. Contributory causes are given as overselling of computers, reaction against change, speed and growth of computer technology. The solution is seen to lie in a more dominant role for user management in the development of computer systems and greater emphasis on education. The computer of the future will then become integral to the mining process as an extension of management's planning and control function.

In this paper is given a general description of the Black Star copper orebody, its relation to the lead orebodies and the controlling factors in the mineralisation.Copper ore, in the form of chalcopyrite, was first noted at Mount Isa in 1930 during the surface drilling campaign to prove the downward continuation of the silver-Iead-zinc orebodies.Details of the occurrence are set out in table 1.Other sub-commercial widths were also disclosed and examination of these occurrences showed that commercial mineralisation could not be expected within 800 ft. of the surface. It was therefore decided that further exploration was not warranted until underground workings had advanced to this horizon.Detailed surface mapping showed two small outcrops of the host rock of the copper orebody. One occurrence, 50 ft. x 75 ft., was of quartz, with leaching suggesting former dolomite. Another outcrop, further north and west of silicified shale, with low grade oxidised copper, has recently been found. Coals from the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales treated in the Port Kembla coal preparation plants of Australian Iron and Steel Pty Ltd differ substantially in their characteristics. Knowledge of, performance not only enables comparison and promotes better control, but also provides the means for predicting results. Evaluation of performance of cleaning equipment has been made in terms of probable error (Ep.) Results for Baum jigs, a Chance cone, heavy medium cyclones and water washing cyclones are examined. The efficiency factors derived from the probable error are applied to the float and sink analysis, mathematically simulating operating conditions. This method is applied to the Balgownie seam. The Balgownie seam lies between the Bulli and Wongawilli seams in the Coal measures of the South Coast and mining on a large scale began recently in the Bulli area. It is known locally as the Four Foot seam and exhibits er difficult washability characteristics, due to a comparatively high middlings content. These properties and the tively high inherent ash make careful selection of cleaning equipment essential for optimum recovery. The prediction technique is used to determine the possible results when this coal is cleaned in the Port Kembla plants. Predicted values are compared with results from full scale trial washings demonstrating the validity and accuracy of the technique. Applications of result forecasting are listed.

Within the Ross River Basin, the following types of water were collected and analysed; 19 streams, 24 wells and bores together with 19 samples from the Ross River Dam. The waters were found to contain up to 269 ppm of silica and, although they meet the requirements for industry in all other respects, this extremely high figure means that two basic guidelines should be followed. All steam generation units, except those less than 150 psi should employ hot lime zeolite softening, demineralization or evaporation to remove silica. Cooling systems should only operate on a once through basis.

Digital computer based control systems are used to implement control and monitoring over most unit operations in Mount Isa Mines Limited lead-zinc concentrator and copper concentrator. Implementation has been gradually devel- oped and expanded since the first process computer installation in 1969. Operations currently using high level control logic include crushing, grinding, on-stream analysis of flotation products, flotation reagent additions, and tailings thickening. Details of gains in metallurgical efficiency for each system are considered.

Typical are the long investment cycle times, the designer does not normally control the spending (the owner does), and the industry is inherently technologically conservative or risk adverse while accepting the often more significant geological, market and political risks.æSustainable Plant DesignÆ is an approach to plant and facility design that drives the necessary culture change and acceptance by minimising technical risk and maximising potential returns. The future challenges in mining instrumentation, mainly on future intelligent mines, are to continue providing instruments with the highest level of reliability at the lowest possible cost, and also to take advantage of technology existing in other industries and to adapt it to the mining context. New wireless instruments (smart sensors, smart actuators, smart controllers) would also be very useful, as well as instruments fully adapted to the monitoring of large movements that are observed, in both underground and open pit mines. Mining instrumentation is found to various degrees in most mines, both open pit and underground. Smart mining instruments present a certain number of aspects specific to the environment in which the instruments are installed. Namely, the instruments can be installed either for short-term or long-term purposes. The mining industry is always looking for useful instruments that can provide relevant information on ground behaviour adjacent to mining stopes or permanent infrastructure. The instruments must meet the various criteria, and must also evolve with the new mining technologies that are continuously being implemented. A strong collaboration between the mining industry, research organisations, and instrument manufacturers is the key to meeting these objectives. This contribution describes the current trends on smart sensors and smart instrumentation with Wireless LAN support.

Recent well-publicised problems with the start-up of new mining projects have continued to feed the perception that the mining business in general and Ore Reserves in particular are a poor risk. New mines commonly experience difficulties when the true variability of ore characteristics becomes apparent during commissioning. At this critical stage, the impact of lower metal recovery, reduced throughput or increased consumption of reagents and energy can have a catastrophic effect on economic returns, as illustrated by the premature closure of some operations. There appear to be several common reasons contributing to the poor performance of mining projects, of which three are examined here: lack of early risk assessment before feasibility studies are started, inadequate sampling for metallurgical test work and variability of the run-of-mine (ROM) ore. An underlying feature of these issues is the lack of effective interaction between geologists, mining engineers and metallurgists/ process engineers. Geologists need to be more aware of ore processing issues and the range of characteristics that need to be considered as part of the resource estimate. Metallurgists need a greater understanding of the variability of the run of mine ore in terms of all the characteristics that influence the design and operation of the plant. Mining engineers need to determine the short-term variability of the ore in the mine schedule, so that there is confidence that the quality of the run-of-mine ore will be within the design specifications of the plant. A substantial overlap between these disciplines and sharing of areas of responsibility is necessary if these and other technical problems are to be better understood, production estimates are to be improved and commercial risks are to be reduced. Although the JORC Code (1999) provides guidelines for reporting all the issues that are material to an Ore Reserve estimate, some issues are rarely fully addressed in Ore Reserve reports. In particular there is no formal requirement for a metallurgist to assure his or herself of the appropriateness of the Ore Reserve classification. Consequently the level of uncertainty related to recovered grade and ore processing characteristics may be understated. It is suggested that to meet the concerns of bodies funding new mineral developments a stronger multi-disciplinary approach to the analysis of mineral deposits and reporting of Ore Reserves is required. The culmination of this approach would be the formal requirement for a geologist, mining engineer and a metallurgist to co-sign Ore Reserve reports.

Current attitudes by exploration companies towards working on another party's exploration permit or equivalent vary widely. That this is so is due to the virtual absence, on the one hand, of anything in the mining legislation in any jurisdiction that establishes what are the exclusive rights to explore, as opposed to apply for a mining tenement, that the grant of such an authority conveys on the holder, and on the other hand, of any code of ethics or set of guidelines to proper practise. By contrast, in most states and territories, if not all, it is an offence to enter onto a mining tenement, other than to cross it, without the consent of the holder, although until recently most field personnel would have been unaware of this and most explorers would have transgressed at one time or another. A similar vacuum exists where aerial surveys are concerned. There are in fact no guidelines. It has always been assumed that a party wishing to carry out such a survey was free to do so, without even an obligation to notify the holders of any tenements or permits in the area to be surveyed, let alone make available to them any data from the survey. Concepts of 'geophysical trespass' now being tested in the US also raise the possibility that data won from adjoining ground using geophysical techniques may be privileged. Attitudes now appear to be changing. In the absence of legislation or any code of practise, what does the industry regard as ethical behaviour? Do we need to define the rights and obligations of various parties more clearly, and if so, what should they be and to what extent will it be necessary to confirm them by legislation as opposed to adopting a code of practise? Will the existence of such a code in fact improve corporate practise?

The ventilation and refrigeration design of underground mines is an important aspect, when new or existing mines are considered and places a great responsibility on engineers tasked to do so. The current trend for both local and international underground mines is to extend their search for valuable ore reserves deeper below surface. In South Africa, the predictions are that about 40 kt of actual gold still lies in situ, ready for extraction. As mines extend their search for minerals of economic value deeper and deeper into the earthÆs crust, ventilation and refrigeration aspects of such mines become more prominent than before. The planning and design of the required ventilation and refrigeration within these mines, over their expected lifetime is important including the practical implications of such designs. Technology changes and improvements need to be incorporated into ventilation and refrigeration designs, where possible and advances in this specialised field explored. This paper explores ventilation and refrigeration design aspects within the underground mine sphere. Aspects such as mining depth, virgin rock temperature (VRT), mining methods, and different cooling applications available including ventilation supply are reviewed in design applications. Heat generally becomes a significant aspect to counter in these mines and they are not always necessarily deep mines.

The Big Wainihinihi River and tunnel are located on the western side of the Southern Alps of New Zealand within the active Alpine Fault zone, which marks the boundary between the Pacific and Australian Tectonic Plates. The tunnel was built over 100 years ago to supply water for gold mining, but it now conveys water from a high-energy intake to a canal that supplies three of TrustPower’s hydro-electric power stations with a combined installed generating capacity of 10 MW. Part of the tunnel passes through an unstable 50° schist slope, which fi rst suffered a wedge failure in the 1929 Arthur’s Pass Earthquake and was reinstated in the mid-1970s for hydro generation. In 2008, TrustPower’s monitoring system showed that the wedge failure had remobilised and that urgent remediation was required.Harker Underground Construction (Harker) was awarded a design-build contract to restore the tunnel to service by tunnelling a new central section. Their geotechnical engineers, Peters and Cheung, reviewed the tunnel’s stability and proposed a new, safer tunnel alignment, deep behind the failure wedges. This work was based on their failure model, cost-benefit studies, and engineering geology completion mapping at the time of re-opening.Construction innovation was an important factor in ensuring the project’s success, as were detailed geological and geotechnical information, a robust methodology, strong client relationship and planning. To suit the varying rock conditions and restricted space, Harker combined a traditional drill-and-blast method with light-weight modular steel sets and timber supports to reduce construction costs and mitigate support risk. To make material handing easier in the tight conditions, a special electric locomotive was designed and built and blasting confi gurations were adapted to suit varying rock conditions in the highly fractured schist.The isolated site meant interesting and unexpected challenges, particularly communications and resources (both human and material). Despite that, the project was completed within budget, on schedule, and with no lost-time injuries.

The largest single operating loss in many hydrometallurgical plants is the poor recovery of leached product in the solids sent to tailings. Any reduction in the concentration of the valuable species in this stream will improve the project economics. Conventional design, to reduce the soluble loss, is to increase the number of wash stages or the wash/water ratio. This approach is limited in effectiveness as it can only reduce the soluble loss to that dictated by the concentration in the returning solution. For copper plants this concentration is set by the recovery in the solvent extraction (SX) plant. When using a single grade of SX feed a single grade of SX raffinate is produced generally with five to seven per cent of the copper still remaining in solution. An alternative approach has been developed by Cognis Corporation and implemented on a number of recent projects using engineering input from Miller Metallurgical Services. The SX plant feed is æsplitÆ into two different streams: a high-grade stream containing up to 75 per cent of the copper and a low-grade stream with the remaining copper. This Split-CircuitÖ concept has significant benefits in terms of both copper recovery and reduction in acid costs. The high-grade stream has the bulk of the copper removed and the raffinate sent directly back to the leach; to fully re-use the acid that has been generated during extraction in the SX process. The recycling of this higher concentrated acid stream considerably reduces the acid in the raffinate sent to washing steps. It represents a significant saving in acid consumed via the tails stream. The low-grade stream has a significantly lower SX feed grade and hence produces a lower raffinate acid and copper concentration. This lowers the economic species in the wash solution and hence reduces the soluble loss accordingly. Other operating improvements are realised with lower neutralisation costs (with the lower acid in the wash stream) and from a decreased need for in-circuit neutralisation to improve SX performance. The SX plant itself is also split into a high-grade extraction and a low-grade extraction stream to enable the low-grade raffinate to be produced. A number of circuit alternatives have been utilised that have provided a range of benefits. The circuit concept has been included into both new and existing plant operation. As a result of this experience other methods of incorporating the concept into a circuit have been developed.

Majorfeatures of the composition of such alluvial deposits are the lowcontent of gold and the small size of the gold particles. Atpresent, the gold-miners treat alluvial deposits in which a portionof fme gold (0.25 mm) exceeds 45 per cent. It is expected that by2000 these resources will be the main deposits mined (Zamyatinet aI, 1991).Under real industrial conditions the losses of minus 0.25 mmmetal are 50 per cent and more. The low level of recovery of finegold is observed not only at concentrators equipped with sluices,but also at concentrators equipped with modern diaphragm andpistonless jigs (Table 1).

The subject is considered primarily from the university point of view and relates more to the disciplines of mining and mineral processing than to geology or perhaps metall- urgy, but the conclusions have wider implic- ations. Continuing education, being the subject of a separate paper, is only briefly discussed. The important and particularly relevant training and industry role of the technician engineer and technician are not considered.
