The commercial outcomes from new mining projects or brownfields expansions often fall short of feasibility study forecasts because of technical under-performance. This paper: reviews past feasibility study performance; identifies the key drivers of underperformance; and proposes actions that can be taken to manage the risk of underperformance. There have been a number of published reviews of feasibility study performance since the 1970s. The results of these studies are summarised together with recent unpublished data. Key drivers of underperformance include inadequate metallurgical testing, simultaneously pushing a number of project parameters beyond comfortable limits and a failure to recognise the linkage between mining rate and head grade. Actions can be taken during the data acquisition phase and during the feasibility study to manage project technical risks. These generally require a more flexible approach to study management than can be achieved under a ælump sumÆ contract.

The Cattlegrid copper orebody is a concealed thin, tabular sheet localised near an unconformity between two sub- horizontal Precambrian sandstone units. It extends over an area of 1,000 m by 500 m within a wider area of mineral- isation. The ore consists of complex sulphides and is neither massive nor disseminated. It consists mainly of irregular fillings in pore space developed between clasts in sandstone breccias, in fault zones and joints and along stratification planes. Its habit is unique amongst Australian base metal ore bodies. During the pre-development period ore was outlined by percussion holes but in studies leading to investment decisions ore reserves were manually calculated from intercepts and assay results of cores from diamond drill holes. The methods used for estimating reserves in the pre-production and production periods are described and evaluated by comparing mine production during the first five ore production years with the forecasts made.

On the 1 June 1978, the Town and Country Planning Act 1953 was replaced by the revised and more comprehensive Town and Country Planning Act 1977. The new act brings in some substantial changes to the law affecting regional and district planning, and for the first time makes provision for maritime planning. The importance of the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 to the Mineral industry is primarily in the relationship between Regional Planning Schemes and District Schemes as the needs and resources identified in a Regional Planning Scheme will override the underlying District Schemes. The mineral extraction industry must be recognised as a regional responsibility which draws on the resources of a region to satisfy the demand of the communities within that region rather than a purely local operation within one District.

Each technological process can be reduced on the transport networks, and namely on the parametric networks and the non-parametric ones. The parametric networks are created by the piping, electrical cables or channels. The non-parametric network is created by the ways, suspended grooves, trackages and also by the belt conveyors or other conveyors for continuous material transport. If we reduce the technological process on transport networks, then, by the creation of these networks models and their mutual interconnection we obtain the model of the whole technological process. The model can be understood as the universal one, without exaggeration, because it is valid for any technological process. However, for us the mining production process is important what represents the mining and transport of raw materials under the support of the ensuring system. In this contribution one of the first attempt is described, and namely how to connect the parametric network which has been already worked out very properly with the non-parametric network what is presented in this contribution by the transport line of belt conveyors.

The amount of land subjected to coal surface mining in the United States has been reported at 1, 302, 000 acres (1). Latest National Coal Association estimates (1968) show that about 65, 000 acres are affected annually in the production of 186, 000, 000 tons of coal. Peabody Coal Company affects approximately 9500 acres annually in the ten States in which we are presently operating. Surface mining at Moura, Australia was begun in February 1961. In Marcy 1963, the Marion 7900 dragline with 35 cubic yard bucket went into operation and in 1967 the Marion 8900 dragline with a bucket capacity of 130 cubic yards was put into operation. In addition a third dragline, a 480W was added in 1969. It carries a 15 cubic yard bucket and is used to work areas that are too small to justify movement of the larger machines, In 1969 the Moura surface mine produced 3, 002, 774 short tons, and in 1970 3, 418, 933 short tons.

This paper provides an expanded definition of industrial minerals that challenges the way we look at exploration, development and the understanding of mineral industry structure and profitability. Included in industrial minerals are bulk commodities such as iron ore and coal alongside the more traditional industrial minerals such as salt, soda ash, silica sand and clay. The profitability of industrial minerals is reviewed from a producerÆs perspective and shown in many instances to be significantly higher than for precious and base metal industries. The key drivers of profitability are examined along with some highly profitable industrial mineral industries such as borate, potash, chromite and natural soda ash. Demand for industrial minerals in Australia and Asia is reviewed, with a focus on supply bottlenecks and the opportunity this represents for investment by Australian companies. The establishment of new price benchmarks is considered and the possibility of new export grades for industrial mineral products. Investment opportunities in industrial mineral projects are outlined, including some exploration concepts in Australia and Asia. Industrial mineral project evaluation methods are discussed and the challenge issued to companies (exploration, production and finance) to become a part of the profitable action in the world of industrial minerals.

The Graham Farmer Freeway Project in Perth, Western Australia, is the largest urban infrastructure project ever carried out in the State. At a project cost of over $360 million, it also ranks as one of the largest in Australia and is even large by world class standards. The project provides a much needed east-west freeway bypass around the CBD of Perth, linking the Great Eastern Highway in the east with the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeway system in the west. The Bypass will have 6.5 kilometres of freeway, a major bridge over the Swan River, several pedestrian overpasses and underpasses, dual use paths, interchanges and flyover bridges and a rail tunnel. The whole project is being carried out over a four-year time frame, due to be complete and open to traffic in June 2000. The project has been divided into two stages, with Stage 1 including the 1.63 kilometre long Northbridge Tunnel, the subject of this paper.

The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of milling and flotation circuit configuration on flotation performance of platinum-bearing ore from the UG2 reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. Pilot plant trials were conducted at Lonmin Platinum using a highly automated pilot plant (a floatability characterisation test rig or FCTR), with a pilot ball mill, a stirred media detritor and an ISA mill. Different milling and flotation configurations were tested, without changing the overall grind size distribution or flotation residence time from one circuit to the next. Results from the pilot plant tests indicate that staged grinding, with intermediate flotation stages, can achieve significant performance benefits in comparison to a single grind-float circuit, for an equivalent overall grind and flotation residence time. These findings are explored qualitatively, in terms of the recovery and transportation of fast, slow and non-floating platinum-bearing particles through the various milling and flotation stages, and an optimum strategy for the separation of this type of ore is explored and discussed.

This paper presents a case study to reduce the operational cost on the secondary ball mill circuit in the Lead/Zinc Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines. The circuit includes two five-metre diameter ball mills each closed with a cluster of ten 15-inch cyclones. The operating cost for both ball mills is about six million Australian dollars per annum.The concentrator achieves 75 per cent of the plant design capacity with one ball mill operating, but will have to use two ball mills when 100 per cent plant capacity is required. The optimisation study on the circuit identified a new flowsheet that enabled the concentrator to reach 100 per cent of the capacity by using one of the two secondary ball mills. The success of the project utilised the existing equipment rationally and saved the operational cost for one ball mill at full concentrator capacity. A further simplified secondary circuit is proposed using the IsaMill for the secondary grinding duty. Performance of the IsaMill circuit and the potential cost savings are predicted.

Present value maximisation studies are a useful aid in enhancing the economic performance of open pit mining operations. Maximising present value helps to reduce the risk of financial failure. Maximisation of present value also means that the capital invested is being used most efficiently. A characteristic step in determining the present value of an open pit mining operation is to set out the sequence in which increments of material (ore of various grades and waste rock) are mined. Traditionally, present value maximisation has been performed by selecting a cut-off grade for each increment so as to maximise the present value of the total operation, by an iterative process using computers. Kenneth F Lane has developed a method and applied it to many mining operations. An alternative method for determining the maximum present value of an open pit mining operation is given. In this method the maximum present value is determined by working backwards from the end of the operation life, progressively asking the question of each increment `what cut-off grade maximises the the present value at the start of mining of that increment?' The method allows calculations to be performed by a `spreadsheet' package. Present value determinations are characteristically performed under constant conditions (eg prices, costs) throughout the operation life. Unfortunately real life circumstances are rarely constant, with the costs of mining inputs rising at variable rates. The prices received for mineral products have been shown to broadly trend downwards with time in real terms. Treatment of such changes in the determination of the maximum present value of an operation is discussed.

In 1965, Peter Flawn author of the famous text-book on Mineral Resources (1966) published a paper in Economic Geology with the delightful title `Who took the `Economic' out of Economic Geology?'. He opened this most interesting article with the following paragraph:If one were called upon to cite an example of a fish out-of-water he could hardly pick a better one than a recent graduate of geology of an America university who is suddenly faced with the responsibility of evaluating or appraising a mineral property. And I venture to say that the 'ftsh' with a doctorate - even in economic geology - is not much better equipped than one holding a lesser degree. The new graduate with a major in economic geology probably knows the significance of the various sulphur isotopes, he surely knows a great deal about the chemistry of the ore forming fluids and he recites with ease the arguments which prove deposits are epigenetic rather than syngenetic. However he is a rare bird indeed if he knows anything about the economics of the mineral industry. The truth is that geologists who are engaged in evaluation work are largely self taught. I ask my more distinguished and experienced colleagues - `Has it always been this way? Who took the `economic' out of economic geology?

Water is a key resource input to copper heap leach operations in both quality and quantity. A number of recent developments in analysis of the technology have shown that water consumption can be optimised. The leach consumption has been generally considered in terms of minimisation of the evaporative loss by changing the application method (drippers or wobblers). Modelling of the irrigation effects on leach rate has shown that the poorer surface coverage from drippers has an adverse effect on the leach extraction rate. This is particularly evident in the early part of the leach. The use of different irrigation systems during alternate parts of the leach cycle can have benefits in minimising the water consumption without an unacceptable outcome from extended extraction times. By combining the leach rate effect with the evaporative loss estimates, an economic decision matrix can be generated to allow the operator to select an appropriate leach irrigation strategy, combining both irrigation delivery and irrigation rate. In the SX-EW plant, the total quantity of EW bleed and SX scrub stage bleed (both for iron control) can be reduced to an absolute minimum. The economic minimum may be different depending on the cost of producing the high-quality water used to replace the bleed streams. Adjustment of the SX process, in particular use of multiple entrainment control steps, can provide significant reductions in the total bleed and make up requirements.

Aspects of the formation, decomposition and acid solubility of zinc ferrite were examined to find potential ways of increasing the recovery of zinc from a calcination process of mineral concentrates. Ferrite can begin to form within 2 hours at 450¦C. while complete reaction can occur after 35 minutes at 700¦C. The nature of the starting materials has a pronounced effect on the rate of formation and below 700¦C. ZnSO4 and Fe2O3 proved to be the least reactive of the materials investigated. It is possible that iron in a mineral admixed h sphalerite can be converted to a relatively inactive form, however, it does not seem possible to prevent zince f formation when iron is in the sphalerite lattice. At the two temperatures examined, 650¦C. and 700¦C, the presence of SO2 in the atmosphere accelerate .e formation of ferrite. Prolonged exposure to such atmospheres, however, caused the ferrite to decompose to ZnSO4 and Fe203. The optimum temperature for decomposition was 650¦C. and it was virtually complete within 2 hours in an atmosphere of 10% SO2 in air. Zinc ferrite was also decomposed by CO at low concentrations, and by heating with limestone at 1000¦C. for at least 2 hours. The solubility of zinc ferrite in acid was influenced by the starting materials used. As both the reaction temperature and the time at temperature increased the acid solubility decreased. Traditional models employed to genetically link associated chromite and platinum-group elements have favoured crustal contamination as the primary process for inducing sulfide and oxide saturation. The association of chromite ores with crustal contamination is well established in the literature. However, in the 1970s (cf Irvine, 1973, 1975), Irvine demonstrated that crustal contamination was in fact problematic as a tool for inducing chromite precipitation in mafic to ultramafic magmas. His results are re-examined here, along with some attempts to reconcile them with the effects of adding Fe to the models. It is concluded that crustal contamination is indeed problematic based on phase relationships alone. However, the role of fluids as a compensating agent is evaluated, which may explain why crustal contamination may indeed facilitate oxide and sulfide precipitation.CITATION:Prevec, S A, 2015. After the sustained use of the GAG (Górniczy Agregat Gaśniczy) engine at a Queensland coalmine, it has raised questions as to its effectiveness as a remote firefighting tool. All firefighting apparatus have advantages and limitations, however the deployment of any apparatus must be based on its likelihood to succeed and effectively extinguish the fire or bring it under control. A recent study conducted for ACARP by researchers at UNSW has highlighted that there is more to be learned about the GAG. As coalmines are mining at greater depths and fan pressures are much greater than they were when the GAG was introduced, deploying the GAG may be a total waste ofresources and may place operators at greater risk. When the GAG unit is positioned on the surface of the mine, the pressure it generates has to overcome buoyancy of the exhaust gases and the frictional resistance of the borehole and part of the mine circuit. Buoyancy in deeper holes can lead to the GAG pressure relief system opening, venting out the products to the atmosphere without delivering any product to the mine workings. Additionally, frictional resistance is a function of distance. Deeper holes will have a greater frictional resistance than shallow holes. Delivering sufficient products from the unit will be limited by the available pressure that has to overcome the buoyancy, and increased mine resistance thatconsumes any residual pressure. By documenting the limitations of this unit it will enable better decisions to combat a fire or spontaneous combustion event.

This paper follows the development of selected aspects of tunnelling from the 1800s to present day. It appears that, at the turn of the century, technology is beginning to catch up with our vision and we are able to put our ideas to work more quickly.

With the development of new technology and materials of construction, chloride-based hydrometallurgical routes have gained accept- ance as a viable alternative to sulphate-based routes. A number of commercial and pilot plants built and operated over the last decade have provided invaluable experience and con- fidence in their use. Chloride hydrometal- lurgy, with or without pyrometallurgical pre- treatment, is particularly attractive for pro- cessing complex Cu/Pb/Zn/Ag concentrates, nickel mattes and chalcopyrite concentrates. This review outlines recent developments, dis- cusses advantages, as well as indicating some of the problems still to be solved.

Results of experiments for dissolution of zinc by aeration of sphalerite in glass, copper, galvanised iron and stainless steel vessels of identical dimensions are reported. It was found that in a glass container dissolution of zinc reaches a maximum after 30 min aeration and then decreases whereas in the copper container dissolution remains nearly unchanged up to 30 min aeration and then increases. In the cases of galvanised iron and stainless steel containers zinc dissolution increased steadily with time up to 60 min aeration. It is suggested that the different rates of dissolution in glass and copper containers may be due to electro-chemical actions.
