Sustainability in its simplest assessment has been defined as æmeeting the needs of the present without jeopardising the needs of future generationsÆ. For the mining industry alone, this statement could indeed be interpreted by the many cynics in our community as an oxymoron; as miningÆs very existence requires the extraction and consumption of finite resources. However for the future of industry as a whole, the integration of mining, minerals processing and manufacturing presents us with a unique opportunity to achieve sustainability through the continued supply of metals and materials for society, in a manner which can achieve positive social outcomes through a triple bottom line approach.The Kwinana Industrial Area has been Western AustraliaÆs premier heavy industrial precinct for more than 40 years and its prevailing level of prosperity will ensure it remains a significant contributor to the State economy through the 21st century.The Kwinana industries depend on each other for the production of essential raw materials vital to their manufacturing and refining process, an innovation that also has significant environmental benefits.Formed in 1991, the Kwinana Industries Council strives to foster positive interaction between member companies and with the local community.The aims are:to co-ordinate the activities of Kwinana industries on a range of common issues; provide effective liaison with the local community; promote a positive image of Kwinana industries; highlight contributions to the community by Kwinana industries; and work towards the long-term viability of the Kwinana Industrial Area. Systematic ICPES (Inductively coupled plasma emmission spectrometry) analysis of magnetic concentrates from drainage samples has been used to discriminate concentrates dominated by magnetite from those dominated by pisolites, presumably maghemite-rich. In addition, a set of spurious zinc enhancements was recognised and explained with the help of mineralogical data, and systematically isolated using chromium as a Discriminator.

Tyre cost at Mount Morgan Limited had been 24% of the truck operating cost. Comprehensive tyre testing resulted in a reduction in tyre costs of about one third. A record of the evaluation techniques may enable the selection of tyres that are most suited to particular conditions. Rubber characteristics, rubber quantity, tyre design, road conditions, dump conditions and inflation pressure were found to be sig- nificant variables. Measurements of tyre temperatures at the breaker strip were used to select the tyre design and inflation pressure required for Mount Morgan Limited's conditions. Relugging of tyres was discontinued as a result of tyre testing.

Current methods of mucking out small development tunnels are a major limitation to improved efficiency and high rates of advance. This is particularly true in the deep metalliferous mines of South Africa, where the harsh environment, remoteness of operations and the hard abrasive rock conditions mitigate against the use of the tunnel borer type of equipment. The Loader Distributor Train was designed to overcome the special problems of hard rock tunnelling. It combines advanced innovative technology with proven simple methods of operation and maintenance. The system aims at taking advantage of new, efficient and cost effective power sources in South African mines based on replacing compressed air with electro hydraulics and the new concept of hydropower. It also introduces electronics and computer technology, for both automatic control and fault finding, into the production environment. The system is designed to permit sophisticated equipment to be operated and maintained by a semi skilled labour force. Although still undergoing trials it is believed that the Loader Distributor Train will prove highly effective, and that the new concepts offer considerable potential in areas other than flat tunnels, in particular the cleaning of inclined shafts.

The link between the Lecco bypass and major road SS36 (Italy) requires the construction of a double two-way tunnel (through the mount San Martino carbonatic massif). The tunnel excavating section is about 90 sqm through mount San Martino carbonatic rocks. The mountain sides are unstable and are often the scene of large collapsing landslides (tens of thousand cubic metres). The tunnels are very close to the mountain sides. The use of blasting induces vibrations which may reach the Lecco built-up area. With a view to avoiding such dangers the excavating operations were carried out in two successive stages: - opening a pilot tunnel, whose section is about 10 square metres, by a full face TBM to eliminate the more intense vibrations which are generated by the first opening charges; - successive enlargement by blasting.

The Accha-Yanque zinc belt in southernPeru is a major zinc-lead rich metallogenic province. In the belt are comprised several non-sulfide-type occurrences, extending on the periphery of the Yauri-Apurfmac batholith (Oligocene-Miocene). Zinc mineralisation at Accha (almost fully oxidised) occurs in breccias of sedimentary and tectonic origin in the limestone of the Ferrobamba Fm (Middle to Upper Cretaceous). Non-sulfide association consists mainly of smithsonite and hemimorphite replacing both primary ore minerals and carbonate host rocks. Mn(hydr)oxides and Zn-clays (sauconite), can be locally very abundant. Differences in mineralogy of the ore and gangue minerals, as well as the composition of the host rock can have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption, and therefore on the economic value of the deposit. Here, in what is partly a review and partly a personal viewpoint, I take stock of changes in emphasis and comprehension on the subject of basaltic volcanism in the decade that has passed since the completion of the landmark Basaltic Volcanism Study Project (1981). I concentrate attention on the relatively neglected physical-volcanology aspects (in 1988 it was still possible to publish a 340-page book on flood basalts with barely any mention of physical mechanisms).I adopt the useful unifying concept of "volcanic system" to embrace the invariably-present intrusions as well as the volcano; I consider controls exercised by magma-supply rate and modulator-mechanisms on the nature of the system;I emphasize that sheeted-intrusion complexes, consisting either of dikes or inclined sheets (depending on the ability of the system to expand laterally) occur in all eroded major systems and fuel geothermal systems; I show how constraints set by cooling of narrow intrusions cause such complexes to be wedge-like and produce considerable rotations; I consider the role of the level of neutral buoyancy in making magma chambers possible, causing lateral subsurface magma flow and localizing intrusions, while the LNB itself can be accentuated by intrusions; and I examine the possibility that underwater systems could have very different internal structures from systems on land.

The microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of cryptomelane-rich and pyrolusite-rich samples of manganese oxides was studied in repeated five-day static batch cultures over II weeks. Manganous ion was leached/reduced faster from the cryptomelane-rich samples (average 510 mg Mn2+/1/d) than from the pyrolusite samples (average 442 mg Mn2+/1/d).Cultures contained 20 per cent (w/vl) manganese mude, five per cent (w/v) molasses nutrient and the end-of-batch bacterial cell numbers were approximately 1010 cells/ml. The cryplomelane-rich sample incubates became more acid with time than the pyrolusite-rich incubates. The breakdown of pyrolusite proceeds in a relatively uniform way, while cryplomelane indicates a stepwise destabilisation.

The most recent development in gold processing is the increasing use of heap leaching for the extraction of gold from low grade ore, and old tailings dumps. The reason for this trend is mainly to do with economics. The advantage of heap leaching is the considerable saving in both capital and operating costs. However, not all ores are amenable to heap leaching. It is only applicable to well oxidized ores that have suitable permeability char- acteristics, and the gold recovery is poorer than by conventional process. In this study, an attempt has ben made to ascertain the heap leaching characteristics of Western Australian gold ores on the bench scale using multiple, appropriately sized leach columns. The influence of particle size, flow rate, column depth and leaching time on the rate of gold extraction was determined. The percolation rate of cyanide leaching solution was deter- mined with and without gypsum additions. Efforts were also made to minimise particle segregation, fines migration and solution channelling during leaching, so as to improve solution percolation, gold extraction rate and recovery.

It is my pleasure to deliver the first Keynote Address to the first joint conference between The Australasian Institute of Mining and- Metallurgy and The American Institute of Mining, Metallur- gical and Petroleum Engineers. I am particularly pleased to be participating in this first joint meet- ing as I have been a member of one Institute for 41 years and the other for 35 years. An examination of the membership of both Institutes confirms the fact that the mineral in- dustry is an international one. This has long been the case and basically stems from the occurrence of mineral resources in most countries of the world. It is therefore fitting that these two 'Inter- national Institutes', representing the professions involved in the mineral industry, should choose `International Resource Management' as the theme of the first joint conference. The topic of this Keynote Address is `The mineral equation' or the counterbalancing supply and demand items and the factors affecting them. I propose to attempt to present the overall picture of the mineral equation as subsequent papers and sessions will deal with specific items in more detail. My thesis is broad and deceptively simple; it is that the continued existence and growth of world material civilization depends, in large measure, on the continued use and further dis- covery of world mineral resources. Material civili- zation is used as a broad term to include the pro- duction of man's shelter and tools together with the production of the `consumer' goods and ser- vices needed by society. First let us spend a few minutes looking at the development of material civilization.

The disagregation and privatisation of the mining and power gene ration operations of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria has being taking place over the past five years. This has transformed the service provision to the new organisations and has resulted in major change to the working lives and professional relationships of thousands of Australians. The authors wish to take this opportunity to explore the issues arising as the program of privatisation of public assets continues. Changes within the workplace which resulted from the outsourcing of the 'investigation and design' functions and more lately as a result of privatisation of the operating, generating and distribution businesses are discussed. The responsibility of managers retaining the services of design engineers has changed. There is an added responsibility of contract administration and an increased focus on intellectual property and strategic issues. The way in which the sectors are adapting is discussed and future directions are explored. We welcome this opportunity to explore the changes in professional life which have taken place over the last five years in the Latrobe Valley Power industry. Engineers and earth scientists have a pivotal role in the continuing successful operation of the three Latrobe Valley Mines of the generation companies. The Mines' collectively excavate annually over 13 million cubic metres of overburden and 48 million tonnes of coal for delivery to mine-mouth power stations and for briquette manufacture.

Indonesia has the largest coal reserves in the south-east Asian region. According to estimates from the World Energy Confer- ence, it has reserves of 18 billion mt lignite, 4.4 billion mt sub-bituminous coal and 774 million mt bituminous coal (Wyllie,1988). In recent years, substitution of coal for oil in power plants has been the goal of the Indonesian government since proven deposits of coal are about five times as large as national hydrocarbon reserves and most of Indonesia's power stations are still oil fired. Recently a coal fired power plant has been built in Java Barat, which will have a full capacity of about 3000 MW. It is intended to supply coal for this power plant from Bukit Asam mining area (South Sumatra). Coals from Bukit Asam - which are of the lignite or brown coal type - usually contain considerable moisture . It should be noted that reference to moisture in coal pertains to the total moisture content. This is comprised of what is commonly termed as equilibrium moisture and surface moisture. Surface moisture typically affects combustion process as well as pulveriser performance since it possibly influences the relative ease with which coal may be ground. In practice, the surface moisture produces agglomeration of the fines in the pulverising zone and reduces pulveriser drying capacity because of the inability to remove the fines as quickly as they are produced. This agglomeration has also the same effect as coarse coal during the combustion process because the surface area available for the chemical reaction is reduced, hence the combustion efficiency is also reduced. The influence of the moisture of some coals on their grindability (Hardgrove Grindability Index) has been previously correlated by several authors; some of them will be mentioned later. Those correlations, however, could not be immediately applied to any coal since it is still believed that there are other factors which influence the grindability of the coal, such as type and rank of the coal. The relationship between coal moisture content and its grindability has been investigated by Ellmann and Belter (1955). It was found that, for North Dakota lignites, the grindability varied as the moisture content changed. In Britain, Fitton, Hughes and Hurley (1957) stated that, for Bilsthorpe coal, over a wide range of free moisture content (from air-dried to about 30 per cent moisture), the Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) remains virtually unchanged. In addition to that, it was suggested that it would be slightly advantageous to dry the coal below its air-dried moisture content (at temperature ¦ 100¦C) to increase the ease with which coal could be ground, especially for low-volatile coal and high-volatile non-caking coal. Furthermore, it was also concluded that a broad relationship appeared between coal rank and Grindability.

The three systems of mining in use in the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales are bord and pillar with or without subsequent extrac- tion, longwall and shortwall. Bord and pillar with extraction is regarded as the conventional system. The application of continuous miners and powered roof supports (Shortwall) to coal min- ing has, grown in recent years from something of an oddity among extraction systems to an acceptable and viable approach in certain min- ing environments. The method can be applied in a high proportion of situations where normal pillar extraction is practised with advantages over the conventional approach. These advantages extend to both safety and efficiency aspects and also include better utilization of coal reserves. It holds hope for further gain in efficiency because its simplicity of layout lends itself to achieving the goal of contin- uous haulage towards which operators are always striving.

This paper examines the effects of a significant number of plant alterations and modifications to the lead flotation circuit during the past five years. Metallurgical effort is directed largely at the flotation performance of middling streams and current strategies are discussed. The automatic control of cell destination and collector additions are outlined in the latter section of the paper, along with a description of control hardware in current use.

Zircon is the second in abundance among the heavy minerals occurring in the beach sand along the coastal belt of Bangladesh. In this study a detailed characterisation of Bangladesh zircon extracted at the pilot plant of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission at CoxÆs Bazar has been attempted using chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. From the chemical analysis it is found that Bangladesh zircon has a purity of 95.88 per cent. The main impurity in Bangladesh zircon is titanium oxide (3.01 per cent). This is followed by iron oxide (0.42 per cent). A number of other oxides are also found. Microscopic study revealed that Bangladesh zircon has an elongated, prismatic shape with pyramidal termination in about half of the grains while the rest are more or less rounded. Some fractured and irregular grains are also found. Bulk sample of Bangladesh zircon in the as-received condition shows a yellowish brown color. However, individual zircon grains are seen to be almost colourless and transparent under polarised light. XRD study confirmed good crystallinity in the sample. Under the microscope it is found that zircon grains constitute 94 per cent while total impurities amount to six per cent in Bangladesh zircon. This result agrees fairly well with the chemical analysis results. Microscopic study identifies oxides of titanium (both rutile and ilmenite) to be the main impurity, in conformity with the findings of chemical analysis. Further, monazite was also identified as an impurity under the microscope. An iron bearing coating is also found on a few zircon grains. Most of the impurities found in Bangladesh zircon exist as discrete minerals.

A selection of Australian washed coal samples was examined to determine the effect of sample hydrophobicity (rank) and particle size on froth stability in the flotation process. The results indicate distinct rank-based variations in froth volume and stability for flotation tests conducted without the use of collector, over a series of particle size distributions.High-rank coals showed a greater tendency to generate stable, high-volume froths than coals of lower rank. Implications for circuit design and operation are outlined.

SUMMARY Tyres account for 25-30% of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines. Tyre operating costs can be substanti- ally reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available. This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt. Newman Mining Company's Newman minesite, and discusses the contribution that each has made to improving tyre management and reducing costs. INTRODUCTION Tyres are a significant cost in mining. Tyre costs make up between 25% and 30% of the operating costs of large (i.e. 100 tonne and larger capacity) open-cut mine haultrucks. Nuclear power stations to be installed in Australia will be fuelled from Australian resources of raw materials.This will require the establishment of new manufacturing industries and the eventual expansion of established activities, especially in uranium mining and the preparation of precision metal products.This paper presents some predictions of the possible growth of nuclear power installations in Australia.These might amount to 4000 MWE by 1985 and 11,500 MWE by 1990 and towards the end of the century, about 50 per cent of new generating plant might be nuclear.Predictions are given of the demands for materials (uranium and zirconium) and fuel manufacturing services for four reactor systems which might be considered in the programme.The availability of raw materials and technical capability place Australia in a particularly good position to undertake the manufacture of nuclear fuel; in addition to satisfying the domestic demand we should actively seek export markets for these products.
