A series of physical tests have been conducted to determine the actual performance of bunton to shaft side wall connections typically used in new shaft construction in South Africa. The test set-up is described, together with the applied loading, which incorporates a cyclical load component and a quasi-static load component, in an attempt to simulate actual conditions in the shaft. The test results are given and it is shown that generally the performance is adequate, provided double-slotted holes are not used. Generally the fatigue performance is found to be good, with the only exception being cases where the bottom of the bunton is lower than the seating level for the bunton to side wall connection. Arising from the tests, typical design values of connection stiffness, strength and fatigue life are proposed and a design procedure including these three key aspects of connections is described.

Metal casting operations are a significant source of hazardous air pollutants. In particular, high production iron foundries emit significant quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during pouring, cooling and shakeout of iron castings made in green sand molds. End-of-the-pipeline capture and destruction methods to reduce VOC emissions add crippling costs to foundries. Alternately, the incorporation of advanced oxidants (AO) into metal casting green sand systems has been shown to reduce emissions from high production iron foundries in the US, and at the same time reduce operating costs. Cost savings are driven by the benefits of AO in clay recovery systems. Emissions reductions are the direct result of cascading AO-based reactions taking place in green sand molds. This sustainable greening of the metal casting process is a prototype for the development of other AO and non-AO process-based solutions for sustainable high temperature processing of materials. Fundamentals of AO technologies will be discussed along with the performance characteristics of AO processing systems in the metal casting industry and the breadth of other processing and remediation applications for which AO technologies have the potential to be successfully employed.

This case study describes various aspects of establishing a laboratory facility for testing chemically-cemented fill materials. The applicability of data obtained from such a facility related to mine conditions depends on many factors: kind of data, type of testing facility, sample parameters (composition, geometry, size, etc.). The equipment employed must be adaptable, to accommodate variations in sample size and properties. The design, construction and operation of the testing facility is described, and its application to fill samples prepared from sulphides and oxides both chemically and naturally cemented. The present system was selected following an extensive study of equipment available for testing materials in the fields of rock mechanics and construction materials. The strength testing' facility incorporates Linear Variable Differential Transformers for monitoring both lateral and axial displacements during sample compression. The output from these and from other related instrumentation can be recorded or fed direct to a computer, enabling stress-strain data to be printed out while the test is in progress. Also described are controlled environment curing facilities which allow samples to be cured or weathered under different temperature or humidity conditions to simulate long-term ageing and in place conditions.

One of the main tools used by mining operations to mitigate the risk of rock burst is the installation of a so-called ædynamic resistantÆ support system. Such systems are designed to absorb the impact of shockwaves created by mine-induced seismic events. Dynamic support must be strong and capable of sustaining high loads and, at the same time, they have to be flexible and accommodate large deformation. A dynamic support system is therefore a system capable of absorbing a high quantity of energy. Ground support systems are composed of rock reinforcement (rock bolts or cable bolts) and surface support (mesh or shotcrete). In terms of surface support, fibre-reinforced shotcrete is increasingly seen as the industry preferred solution when difficult ground conditions are experienced, including areas of high seismic hazard. A thick layer of shotcrete is certainly strong but it is by no means flexible. Normal weld-mesh has some flexibility, but it is not very strong. The Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG), in collaboration with Onesteel Reinforcing Pty Ltd, is currently working on a new high-energy absorption mesh that combines strength and flexibility. The new mesh can be installed with a jumbo, in a similar way as the widely used sheet of weld-mesh. This paper describes the development of this new mesh system.

The Argyle Diamond Mine came on stream late in 1985 as the world's largest diamond producer in terms of carat output. The design of the process plant, including the heavy medium separation (HMS) facility which provides the initial stages for separation of diamonds from gangue, evolved over a lengthy period of feasibility study and site investigation into the final form described in this paper. The commissioning was carefully planned and co-ordinated, and culminated successfully with handover of the plant on schedule and within budget. The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.

Coal bursts involve the sudden, violent ejection of coal or rock into the mine workings. They are a particular hazard because they typically occur without warning. During the past two years, three US coal miners were killed in two coal bursts, following a six-year period during which there were zero burst fatalities.This paper puts the US experience in the context of worldwide research into coal bursts. It focuses on two major longwall mining coalfields that have struggled with bursts for decades. The Utah experience displays many of the ‘classic’ burst characteristics, including deep cover, strong roof and floor rock, and a direct association between bursts and mining activity. In Colorado, the longwalls of the North Fork Valley (NFV) also work at great depth, but their roof and floor strengths are moderate, and most bursts have occurred during entry development or in headgates, bleeders or other outbye locations. The NFV bursts also are more likely to be associated with geologic structures and large magnitude seismic events. In-pit crushing systems have been known in the mining industry for many decades. The question whether in-pit crushing is a viable option has often been asked. More than 200 mobile and semi mobile crushing systems have been installed worldwide at various locations and applications. Economic pressures have forced mine operators to reconsider the use of a conventional truck-shovel operation and have contributed enormously to the development of in-pit crushing and conveying systems. The in-pit crushing concepts have varying mobility capabilities. These range from fixed, stationary crushing plants to semi-mobile and fully mobile crushing plants. All these systems are operated in connection with a conveying system. In general in-pit crushing systems have technical and economical cost advantages over truck-shovel operation, particularly as mine capacities increase and mines become deeper. The integration of an in-pit crushing system represents a significant up-front capital investment and the mine is only able to depreciate the capital investment over a sufficient mine life including plant capacity to realise the benefit of the much lower operating cost.

The south-east Missouri cobalt-copper-lead-zinc district is the worldÆs largest lead producer and a significant producer of by-product zinc, copper, cobalt, silver and cadmium. Current production in the district comes from six or seven mines in the Viburnum Trend. Most ores in the Viburnum Trend are characterised by a small number of minerals with simple compositions. Portions of some orebodies contain ores that exhibit greater variations in mineralogy, and these include shale-hosted lead- copper ores, bornite ores and nickel-arsenic sulfide ores. Ore textures include both replacement and open space filling textures, and the paragenetic sequence for the ores is characterised by repetitive periods of deposition of all of the ore and gangue minerals. Ore microscopy is an effective tool for not only the identification of the minerals and textures shown by the ores, but also to determine the mineralogy and textures responsible for beneficiation problems. An interesting variety of sedimentary and structural ore controls have determined the locations of individual orebodies in the district. Based upon the positions of orebodies with respect to Precambrian ridges and knobs, together with areal patterns of mineral/metal zoning, it is interpreted that the ore fluids came from diverse directions to form the deposits in the district. It is concluded that the Old Lead Belt subdistrict was mineralised by fluids that flowed from the north-east and north-west, the Fredericktown area by fluids from the north-east, the Indian Creek subdistrict by fluids from the north-west and the Viburnum Trend by fluids from the north-west and west.

From 1980 to February 1991 the Rosebery concentrator purchased ore from Aberfoyle's Que River Mine. Following the termination of the contract the concentrator reverted to treating Rosebery ore alone. Since that time it has become apparent that the circuit configuration employed was no longer optimum for zinc metallurgy. The circuit was designed to treat a difficult, slow floating sphalerite; however, the opposite was now found to be true. The sphalerite is fast floating and the circuit was cumbersome. During 1992 extensive circuit changes led to the provision of a simple open circuit flow sheet. The circuit is now easier for operators to understand and lends itself to improvements in process control. Middlings streams have been minimised, which produces a far more stable circuit. Significantly, it must be noted that the key to achieving potential results must lie in reducing variations within the process. A significant ore characterisation program has been undertaken, providing an insight into the metallurgical compatability of the ore to be mined. Using the information collected in this program, metallurgical recoveries and grades can now be predicted with a geater accuracy. Ore characterisation data suggests that an improvement from a 54 per cent zinc concentrate to a 57 per cent zinc concentrate should be achievable. By understanding the size-by-size mineral assemblage, a strategy for concentrate grade improvement has been developed. The requirements of the customer must in all cases determine the quality of the product. Pasminco is a fully-integrated zinc producer and as such significant gains can result by tailoring the concentrates to suit the Smelters.

Blasting is known to be both an important and an easily quantified cost factor in rock breaking operations. However, the indirect costs and benefits of the blasting operation are not easily determined due to the irreversibility of the mechanisms involved and the multiplicity of influencing factors. A general conceptual model showing the relationship between blasting and mining costs is well known, but serious attempts to address the critical real relationships have all floundered on the fact that not enough is yet known about either detonation physics or blasting effects. This can only be remedied to the extent that blasting instrumentation enables researchers to pin down not only the relationship between the detonation process and its impact on a particular environment, but also the downhill costs of handling the rock, repairing any damage and building in "Safety Factors" to provide for imponderables. It is vital to standaraize on specifications for instrumentation and measurement techniques and there is a need to review what has been achieved in blasting expertise so as to focus on the most fruitful paths for future work.

It is well known that in most areas of Central Europe it is not difficult to find water - usually at shallow depths - and to recover and use this water. What is much more difficult, however, is to find water sources that offer both sufficient in quantity and qual- ity. Far too often, there are sources that offer abundant quantities but of poor quality or vice versa, i.e. high quality water but insufficient volumes. In the former case where water quality is not adequate - which is more often than not due to anthropogenic factors and only very rarely a result of geogenic effects - the application of treatment techniques can help to turn such water into potable water that is suitable for human con sumption.

This paper is related to the problems of the mathematical modelling of vibrating screening process and to predicting the screening operation results. The authors propose a model of screening based on the interpretation of granular material segregation on a screen surface as an instantaneous process. Results show an agreement with laboratory and pilot plant tests. Derived formulae can be used for screen sizing and screening result estimating.

BHP Diamonds and their joint-venture participants DiaMet Minerals, Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson are currently developing Canada's first commercial diamond mine in the arctic barren lands of the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The paper reviews the early history of the project leading up to the discovery of the first kimberlite pipe in September 1991, diamond exploration techniques and the subsequent advanced exploration and development work carried out at the site. In many aspects, this exploration work represented a development project in itself. Coinciding with the advanced exploration work, the project team prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and went through federal review of the project at the highest level. A research programme sponsored through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association investigated two aspects of mine aerodynamics on model scale. These were aero- dynamic losses in (a) shaft/airway intersections and (b) losses created by mine cages moving in a combined haulage/ventilation shaft. The shaft/airway intersections studied included base and intermediate levels for both upcast and downcast. shafts, with one to four rectangular airways intersecting a circular shaft. Changes in intersection geometry were limited to the installation of 45¦ conical brow cutoffs of varying size and the addition of simple flow control devices. The relative air- flows between the airways and the downstream shaft were varied over a range employed in Australian mining practice. In general, experiments revealed that a small brow cutoff was significantly better than none at all, and a simple device such as a cone can reduce losses and improve flow stability at an intersection. The mine cage studies determined the effect on aerodynamic loss of cage area blockage, height/length ratio, openings in cage walls and surface roughness due to external structural members. The Eastern Distributor Tunnels - the first major road tunnel project in Australia - are the preferred solution to traffic congestion problems, when compared with alternatives, in this inner urban environment. This is because of the reduced impact on residential housing, the improvement of the existing environment, less restrictions on future developments, and a reduction in noise and pollution. Developments leading to a tunnelled solution, traffic needs and reasons for route location are discussed. Criteria for design of tunnel alignments and geometry are described, including the restraints imposed by surface connections on profiles and grades resulting in low rock cover at tunnel portals. The main geotechnical restraints are a major weathered dyke at the shallow large span underground fork and the weathered Ashfield Shale capping the Hawkesbury Sandstone at a portal. Rock cuttability and excavation methods are discussed. Roadheader machines are the most suitable for the varying shallow arched cross sections required and the tunnel lengths involved but the use of blasting in special situations cannot be ruled out. Initial support for the major tunnel lengths will be provided by rock reinforcement in conjunction with shotcrete. Steel ribs are proposed in areas of low cover and weak ground. Final support will comprise an insitu concrete lining. Construction concepts and special tunnelling methods required at the shallow underground forks and tunnels are described.

Base metal skarns have provided most of South KoreaÆs Pb-Zn production since the end of the Korean War, with the bulk of production coming from the Yeonwha group of mines. Currently only the Kumho Zn-Pb mine remains in production, while magnetite skarns are mined as iron ore at the old Yomisan and Ulsan base metal deposits. Base metal skarns within Korea fall into two groups; those hosted in Cambro-Ordovician limestone sequences, situated mainly in sub-basins in the northeast of the peninsula and those hosted within carbonate volcaniclastics of the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin, in the southeast. Sulphide mineralisation is dominated by sphalerite, lesser galena, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite, with subordinate chalcopyrite and molybdenite with Ag-Co credits. Skarns are composed of pyroxene-clinopyroxene-garnet-carbonate-quartz and magnetite, grading into silica-chlorite hornfels. Most of the significant deposits display both pipe-like and stratabound morphology. In the Hwanggang district, a zoned distribution of Ordovician carbonate hosted, polymetallic Mo-W and Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag base metal deposits is observed around the margin of a Cretaceous granite intrusion. Similar polymetallic zoning is recognised in the Sangdong district, where deposits include Sangdong (W), Abisan (Au-As) and Yomisan Northwest (Zn-Mo) and Yomisan Southeast (Zn-Cu-Co), hosted in Ordovician carbonates in proximity to Cretaceous quartz porphyry intrusives. The Taebaeksan district hosts the largest deposits at the Yeonwha group of mines. Although production ceased in 1993, significant resources remain, hosted in Ordovician limestone and dolomite that have been intruded by Cretaceous quartz porphyry dykes. Deposits in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin consist of bedding concordant, vertically stacked base metal skarn mineralisation at several stratigraphic horizons, connected by carbonate-base metal veins with a pipe-like geometry. Evidence such as massive sulphide layers and restricted proximal carbonates suggest mineralisation was initially partly syn-depositional, with both base metals and carbonate venting onto a lake floor, being reconstituted to skarns by later magmatic activity. Skarn mineralisation is universally closely associated with the Cretaceous Bulgugsa Series acid intrusive activity. A common intrusive-structural relationship is recognised at some deposits, with bedding plane and imbricate thrust faulting, introducing felsic intrusives as sills. These intrusions probably introduced the base metals, carbonate, boron, heat and silica, which metasomatically reconstituted the carbonate lithologies to form skarn assemblages. The Korean base metal skarn deposits are regarded as Zn-Pb chimney-manto skarns and display similarities to the Mexican manto type deposits.

Treatment methods for a low grade deposit at Mt. Fitch near Rum Jungle, N.T., were investigated. Physical beneficiation of the ore, sulphuric acid leaching, carbonate leaching and various methods of uranium extraction from the leach liquor were studied. Although the deposit occurs in a carbonate environment, acid leaching of the ore after beneficiation by radiometric sorting appears to be the most economic treatment method. Uranium would be recovered from the leach liquor by solvent extraction.

In the minerals industry numerous problems cannot be solved by conventional mathematical models owing to their complexity or a lack of phenomenological understanding. Neural networks provide one way of mapping the ill-defined relations between process variables and functions for such ill-defined problems. Consequently, processes such as leaching and froth flotation are mostly controlled in an empirical way by using rules of thumb. In addition, these processes involve so many independent and dependent variables that the plant operator finds it difficult to visualise or even observe a change in process conditions. The structure of froths developed on the surfaces of industrial scale froth flotation cells has a significant effect on both the grade and recovery of valuable minerals in the concentrate. Although these effects are well known at the process operational level, where considerable heuristic knowledge is available, little work has been reported on a detailed characterisation of the mechanisms and the visual characteristics of the surface froth. Recent results from an on-line observation of froths in several plants have proved the relationships between image features representing froth behaviour and metallurgical results. It will be shown how supervised and unsupervised neural nets are being used on operating plants to interpret computer vision data. In froth flotation the operator is supposed to visually observe process changes from the appearance of the froth, which is an unreasonable demand under industrial conditions. The system described here determines textural parameters on-line, and tracks the changes in process conditions via a Self-Organising Map (SOM) neural net. This monitoring system warns the operator about fluctuations in reagent addition, and gives an idea of the type of froth encountered. In another example, changes in the mineralogical characteristics of gold ores are represented on an SOM map, based on the diagnostic leaching behaviour of such ores.
