The domestic and commercial use of underground space dates back to Neanderthal man living in caves. There are many examples worldwide of the imaginative use of underground excavations, either left by mining or purpose-built. World living trends indicate that an increasing percentage of the population is living in and around major cities. Environmental, social and economic pressures associated with urban expansion can be partially catered for by a well-planned and integrated underground space regime. This paper addresses the types of underground development that are complementary to the economic and environmental pressures associated with urban expansion and high density cities. The paper explores the implications of mining and exploration technology and civil engineering, as well as the ancillary professional disciplines (legal, architecture and planning, sociology and education).

The current trend in the UK towards the adoption of retreat longwall mining methods and the associated rapid development of the access drivages have exacerbated the environmental conditions experienced within these workings. There is a recognised need to improve the efficiency of the design and operation of mine ventilation systems in order to maintain an adequate environment and climate within these workings. Any improvement achieved in the quality, quantity and control of the delivered ventilation will assist in the provision of improved gas and dust dilution and climatic control. The paper presents an analysis of the psychrometric data recorded during the execution of a series of comprehensive climatic surveys conducted within two representative deep underground UK coal workings. The surveys were performed across two high production retreat longwall districts within UK Coal Ltd collieries. The surveys employed intrinsically safe psychrometric transducers and digital data-loggers to collect a continuous record of the mine climate over designated weekday production and weekend non-production periods. The transducers and data-logging units are capable of simultaneously measuring and digitally recording changes in the dry bulb temperature and the relative humidity at regular time intervals for extended periods of time.

How aqueous fluids move through rocks and minerals is a question of possible pathways and mechanisms. Existing pathways such as fractures and grain or mineral boundaries provide obvious channels for fluid movement. We show how minerals reactive in the presence of an interfacial fluid can be replaced by new product phases through a process of interface-coupled dissolution-reprecipitation. A resulting porosity in the new phase provides a new pathway for fluid movement and therefore mass transport through the mineral, which progressively reacts at a moving interface. Eventually fluids of new and changing composition can pass through originally solid minerals and move on further, taking remobilised elements with them, to be reprecipitated whenever the chemical and/or physical conditions allow. One such example is albitisation of rocks associated with mineralisation.

The Australian gold industry has in recent years experienced a tremendous growth period, though not to levels prevailing at the turn of the century. There are, however, a number of dynamic factors at play which collectively indicate that it would be unwise to assume that this growth will be maintained; indeed the future discovery of viable new deposits may be insufficient to prevent an industry decline in Australia.The higher gold prices of the 1980's together with technological advances, made previously worked mining centres areas of excellent prospectivity. These resources, signposted for us by the oldtimers, are being rapidly depleted. Whilst there can be no doubt that these resources can be replaced the real question is whether it is economic to explore for new deposits when it is likely that:The cost of future exploration will increase as exploration must focus on grassroot areas with few signposts. Almost by definition this primary exploration effort will be subject to a lower success ratio.The cost of future exploration will increase as new deposits will be located in more remote areas and at depth.

By testing rotary-drag bits in granodiorite it was found that an increase in bit clearance angle from 241 0 to 33° decreased insert wear. The Mammoth Copper Deposit consists of three distinct orebodies adjacent to the Mammoth Fault. This fault is arcuate, changing from a normal tension fault to a shear strike fault just to the north of the mine. Movement on the fault was probably contemporaneous with deposit- ion of the adjacent sediments. In the upper levels the No. 1 orebody occurs within a brecciated zone in the footwall of the fault, but at depth the No. 2 and 3 orebodies are stratabound by two brecciated lithologic horiz- ons. The host rocks are impure sandstones, arkoces and quartzites, which in the mine area are near the top of the Lower Proterozoic Myally Beds. Overlying these beds is a conglom- erate siltstone sequence which has been assumed to be the base of the Gunpowder Creek Formation. North and south of the mine the conglomerate rests on an erosional unconformity representing a major time break, but in the mine the uncon- formity and conditions of deposition of the conglomerate are obscure. Some mineralization is contained within the conglomerates. The sulphides present are chalcocite, bornite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. Chalcocite is dominant in the upper levels but could be en- riched by supergene processes. At depth, bornite becomes the dominant copper sulphide with lesser amounts of chalcopyrite, pyrite and primary chalcocite. Throughout the orebody minor digenite and covellite occur and arsenic is a minor constituent bound up with the pyrite. The bulk of the sulphides occur in stringers, fractures and breccia interstices but finer grained primary bedded sulphides can be observed. The genesis is probably a complex process in- volving active tectonic movements extending from deposition to post lithification giving numerous phases of brecciation and redistribut- Ion.

Large scale cut and fill mining in narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies began at Mount Isa in 1964. Initially each orebody was one stope and access was via raises from the level above. Upholing was the principal mining method, although flatbacking was employed where ground conditions were more difficult. Developments since have included access via footwall inclines and connection of all stopes with major crosscuts. Flatbacking is the principal method. The most recent cut and fill operation is now fully mechanised using drilling jumbos, rockbolting jumbos and load-haul-dump units. Improved ground support and drilling and blasting practices have enhanced safety, recovery and productivity in all cut and fill operations.

One of the significant changes which has occurred in the flotation sector of the minerals industry, over the last two decades, has been the successful development of the very large flotation machine. The last twenty years has seen the volume of the individual cell, available to the industry, increase by a factor of ten. Today, new mills, and existing mill modernization plans, can consider individual cell volumes as large as 85 m3 with the certainty that the metallurgical performance capability of the large machine is inherently as efficient as the smaller machine. The large flotation cell offers benefits to the user such as reduced floor space, lower total power, process control simplification, and reduced maintenance. However, the flotation machine size selection process, based on overall installation economics, must include such factors as process tonnage, flotation kinetics characteristics, and metallurgical performance objectives. This paper discusses the flotation machine size and circuit arrangement selection based on both metallurgical performance and economic considerations. A computer based flotation kinetic analysis technique, which has proven valuable in quantifying the metallurgical response of flotation circuits having different cell sizes and number, is utilized to illustrate the selection of cell size and arrangement best suited to a client's Requirement.

Current regional geoscientific studies across the McArthur Basin as part of the National Geoscience Mapping Accord by the Northern Territory Geological Survey and Australian Geological Survey Organisation have provided a significant amount of new data which has enabled revision of the stratigraphic and chronologic framework of the basin. This paper provides an overview of these results, with particular emphasis on new results from Arnhem Land.

The Fiji Islands are remnants of a once continuous Solomon-Vanuatu-Fiji-Tonga volcanic arc (the Vitiaz arc), located at the boundary between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates. They record a history of (i) arc volcanism the late Eocene to late Miocene, (ii) an extensive magmatic response to arc rifting (5.5-3.OMa) during which volcanism was dominated by shoshonitic to tholeiitic basalts, and as rifting continued, (iii) a transition from arc to intraplate volcanism. The Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone separates the inactive South Fiji Basin from the actively spreading North Fiji Basin, and has been considered to be a transform zone, almost parallel to the motion vector of the Australian plate. However rocks dredged during the 1993 `Alize' cruise, from along the northern part of the Hunter Ridge are typical arc tholeiites, and therefore demand that subduction has occurred beneath the Hunter Ridge sometime during the last û 5Ma.

The design and selection of components for belt conveyors is a well known procedure and many handbooks, catalogues and design manuals offer a wide range of detailed information which can be applied to most of the known conveyor problems. The aim of this paper, however, is to investigate the various methods of conveyor drive configurations, and incorporate the latest technical achievements in the control systems, particularly for high capacity conveyor systems carrying ore from pit to processing plants where the lowest maintenance, operating and initial costs are of major importance. Past experience has proven that multi pulley drives can reduce initial capital cost of a conveyor; this leads to the need for better torque control during startup, running, stopping and load sharing. Many methods of torque control are available and have been used in the past. All types have their advantages and disadvantages and must be considered when designing a conveyor or conveyor system. However the recently developed solid state electronic soft start controls utilising AC squirrel cage induction motors are gaining acceptance, especially for a conveyor system where the same control and logic system can be used to transmit startup commands to more than one

The Emperor Gold mine at Vatukoula, Fiji, is a nine million ounce gold telluride deposit. In January 1992, the mine was on the verge of closure when the current management team took charge. Losses had been incurred for two consecutive years and the published resource amounted to less than five years of production. Relationships with the workforce, the government and the general public were poor. Today, the mine has recorded three consecutive years of profit, has resources that will support the operation for at least 20 years and has excellent relationships with employees, government and the general public.

This paper presents the numerical simulation of mine backfilling in underground stopes using three-dimensional discrete element modelling (DEM). The simulation predicts the forces exerted at the stope base and barricade with respect to time under free drained conditions. The results of the numerical simulation are validated using basic analytical solutions and advanced experimental tests involving a geotechnical centrifuge system. Overall, a good agreement between the present numerical simulations and the existing experimental and analytical results was found. The present model suggests that DEM is a promising computational tool to predict barricade pressure in underground mine stopes.CITATION:Hasan, A and Karrech, A, 2014. Heavy minerals recovered from recently discovered deposits in the Murray Basin are proving to be somewhat more difficult to process into saleable ilmenite products than ilmenites from existing operations. This is due to the nature of the gangue minerals present, the impurities in the valuable minerals and the size distribution of the mineral assemblages. Ilmenite product quality, in particular, can be adversely affected by any of these factors. Over the past two years the authors have been involved in assessing the potential to manufacture ilmenite products from a variety of mineral sand deposits in the Murray Basin. The steps undertaken to define the potential products and develop suitable flowsheets have evolved in parallel to the exploration efforts, in cooperation with companies undertaking exploration in the Murray Basin. A combination of an understanding of detailed mineralogy, application of magnetic fractionation and modification of magnetic susceptibility of the ilmenites has in all cases, been successful in improving ilmenite product quality. The targeting of particular ilmenites to specific downstream processes for TiO2 pigment manufacture is the most challenging aspect of this development.

The strength and deformation of more than two hundred coal samples have been tested in the condition of triaxial compression. The regression equation showing the relationship between coal strength and pressure in the pores, as well as confining pressure, was obtained. The appropriate calculation for stress-strain curve was carried out. Further, an analysis shows the variation of coal strength and its modulus of elasticity in methane medium.

The firing of mass blasts at Isa Mine is a normal operating practice. Both electric and non-electric initiating systems are being used for this purpose. The advantages gained by large firings relate to the Planning, Scheduling, Services and Production functions of Isa Mine. More efficient us"e is made of manpower due to the concentrated charging effort and con- tinuity of the charging operation. In addition, the requirement for ring firing personnel to work at the edge of large stope voids is reduced. Better fragmentation results from the interaction of adjacent detonating rings of blastholes and in flight collisions. With mass blasts there is also less chance of large blocks of ore, created by faults or joints, falling into the stope and creating problems at the drawpoints. The formation of a large tonnage of broken ore facilitates production at scheduled rates from that stope source. The weight of explosive detonating during a mass blast can be considerable. Isa Mine has achieved satisfactory blasting results without excessive ground vibration levels and present knowledge indicates that pillar ground stab- ility has been maintained.

Engineered soil covers are used for final closure options for both waste rock and tailings disposal facilities. Currently, cover construction requires excavation of appropriate cover material from a nearby site. If no suitable materials are available, the mine operation may have to ship appropriate materials long distances to the site before the construction of the cover can even begin. This has led to the proposal to engineer cover materials using existing waste materials from the mining operation. The paper presented here describes the results of a laboratory scale testing program to evaluate the potential for blending waste rock, smelter slag and tailings for the creation of a suitable cover material at a site in Canada. Tailings from the local mill, waste rock and slag were collected in the field and blended to create a material with an air entry value similar to the tailings and with physical strength similar to the waste rock. Testing indicated this mixed material could be blended at a consistency of a paste and was suitable for pumping. It can also be compacted to a high-density material. The preliminary results show that it may be possible to blend waste rock, slag and tailings into a material that can be utilised in the construction of a water retaining cover.

A Data Acquisition System with a capacity to monitor 2000 analog instruments has been installed at the mines operated by the Zinc Lorporation, Limited and New broken hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/LVbHC), New South Wales, Australia. Since commissioning in March, 1982, the system has proved its value in providing up-to-date information to both Rock Mechanics and Mining personnel. The paper describes the function of the major software and hardware components of the system, and identifies the advantages that an on-line monitoring system provides in the day-to-day operation of a large underground mine.
