Hydrothermal mineralisation localised around such structures testifies to their importance as conduits for fluid flow. Mesh structures are most commonly developed in situations approximating bulk pure shear but predominantly simple shear meshes also occur. They appear to develop through the infiltration of pressurised fluids into a heterogeneous rock mass with varying material properties. In some circumstances, mesh formation appears to be a precursor to the development of major throughgoing faults. Mesh formation generally involves hydrofracturing (Pf> a3, at least locally) and the condition Pf - 63 to be maintained for the mesh to remain a high permeability conduit, requiring fluid overpressuring at other than shallow depths in extensional-transtensional regimes. The volumetric character of earthquake swarm activity appears to result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through mesh structures, representing a form of distributed fault-valve action along suprahydrostatic hydraulic gradients arising from magmatic intrusion, compaction overpressuring, metamorphic dewatering, etc.

In coal mining each of the unit operations are interrelated with each preceding operation having an effect on subsequent operations. This presents difficulties for determining when the lowest overall costs for a particular mining system are achieved. Drilling and blasting is the first mining operation for production and is known to have an effect on the subsequent loading, hauling and crushing operations. Computer blasting models developed over the past 15 years can be used to describe the drilling and blasting operation. This paper describes the ICI Blasting Model "SABREX" in detail. Methods of using the model are discussed. This involves field measurements of geological structure, shallow refraction seismic surveys, laboratory measurements of rock properties and high speed photography of blasts. The predictions are compared with actual blast results for fragmentation sizing and muckpile profiles. Outputs from the model are described and these can be used for input to models of subsequent operations.

Supplementary sampling of particulate mass concentration, the number concentration and the average particle diameter of nanoparticles using a TSI Dust-Trak DRX Aerosol Monitor, Naneos Partector 2 has been conducted. The aim of this study was to evaluate suitability of the instrument for long-term monitoring of diesel particulate matter (DPM) at conditions of polymetallic mines. Sampling was conducted in an area of the active ore heading, requiring the use of a diesel-powered face haul-age loader R1700 and a mine truck Caterpillar AD-45. The sampling was done for 126 minutes at a distance of 30 metres from the mine face. Results of this field work can be used to expand the sampling program to other mines. Expected outcomes of this study are to develop costeffective DPM control strategies, improve mine ventilation, and protect mineworkers’ health.

This paper reviews factors involved in the feasibility stage of underground mine project development. Emphasis is placed on the need to first select the best method of extraction and make the most accurate assessment of the expected output even with the uncertainties which may exist in structural interpretation, ground stress, geotechnical factors, and industrial conditions. The subsequent engineering planning should be undertaken from the point of view of the face requirements and is subject to constraints imposed by the method of work and nature of the deposit and, in the case of access, to surface constraints and services.

The cost of constantly extending a decline tunnel that plays a part in the actual extractive process is a revenue cost. The characteristics of such a decline tunnel are that it is dug in a series of relatively small excavations. It follows the ore body and is dug as close to the ore body as practicable. In addition, the decline allows for the extraction of ore in the immediate vicinity, with the ore being extracted in a relatively short period of time.

Within the context of acid mine drainage (AMD) associated with mining activities worldwide there has been a tremendous research effort to determine the extent of AMD and assess the influencing factors controlling this process. However, the majority of the current approaches focus on local and regional scale case studies and do not provide a global scale picture of AMD potentials. This study attempts to develop a method aiming at a global environmental impact assessment related to AMD. To confine the complex topic this study concentrates on acidic emissions from heaps in consequence of copper mining processes. In order to pursue this approach two factors are of significant advantage: a comprehensive environmental data base of more then 600 copper sites worldwide and a method which has been developed and proven to be successful in assessing environmental impacts related to land use. Current and future research efforts focus on using this background knowledge to enable both a comparison between sites and a categorisation of sites according to emission estimates.

This paper presents initial findings of a project examining novel processes for the treatment of refractory sulphidic gold concentrates. Non-oxidative roasting of such concentrates for 12 hours at 750¦C resulted in the finely disseminated gold agglomerating to form discrete grains. The pyrite and arsenopyrite decomposed to form pyrrhotite, whilst the labile sulphur and arsenic driven off was collected on a condenser as a mixture of elemental sulphur, metallic arsenic and various arseneous sulphide compounds. As a result, the cyanide solubility of the gold contained in sulphidic refractory gold concentrate from the Emperor mine in Fiji improved from 54.5 per cent to 98.4 per cent; from the Fimiston mine in WA (65.2 per cent to 96.6 per cent), from the Windarra mine in WA (69.6 per cent to 91.3 per cent), from the Harbor Lights mine in WA (20.4 per cent to 60.7 per cent), and from the Wiluna mine in WA (12.6 per cent to 28.0 per cent). The non-oxidative roasting conditions have not been optimised for each of these minerals. Subjecting the non-oxidatively roasted minerals to mild oxidative acidic iron sulphate pressure leaching (with typical temperature of 100¦C and typical oxygen overpressure of 500 kPa) to remove iron and so further liberate finely disseminated gold, resulted in the cyanide solubility of the gold exceeding 96 per cent for each of these five concentrate types (including those from Harbor Lights and Wiluna). Thiourea leaching of the sulphur-rich residues under acidic conditions resulted in remarkably high gold extractions being achieved. These novel processing options need to be optimised, and their economic viability established.

The Dolphin Scheelite orebody is located near the old mining town of Grassy on the south-east comer of King Island in Tasmania. Surface open cut mining of the Dolphin deposit was conducted for a number of years, then the proximity of the sea and adverse stipping ratio led to underground mining. As a result of the variable orientation and dimensions of parts of the orebody a number of mining methods were practiced at the Dolphin mine until 1990 when a combination of high processing and surface site costs coupled with low tungsten prices led to the cessation of operations. In this paper the different mining methods practised are examined and critically reviewed. The more successful mining methods were developed with experience and improving equipment technology to the extent that the underground operation produced ore at the lowest unit cost during the final years of operation.

While, in the past, a great deal of attention has been focussed on technical issues and the performance of explosives in rock, the explosive user, an essential link in the chain, has often been neglected. In the mining industry, too often, the benefits of excellent technical work have been degraded over time due to the lack of definitive and documented control. Using the principles of quality management a quality training system was developed and implemented for management of explosives use at Gunpowder Copper Ltd (GCL). This paper describes the structure of the system, its development and implementation, and contains practical advice and information for managers responsible for blasting and charge crews. The paper is in four parts: I Quality systems. A brief overview of the relevant aspects of total quality management that apply to explosives use. The requirements for documentation, management and auditing are explored. 2. Training for competency. The five essential elements of Competency Board Training (CBT) are examined, including auditing. 3. The Gunpowder Copper system. Implementation of the complete training system. Documentation and its control, auditing, instructions for operators, management responsibility and means of obtaining operator ownership are amongst the issues raised. Reporting requirements are the means to effectively manage change are described. 4. Summary. The paper concludes with the tangible benefits seen by Gunpowder Copper through the adoption of a quality training System.

The factors affecting performance of base and precious metal smelting and converting processes are considered in relation to reactor characteristics. The chemical differences between processes are related to these factors for different reactor systems. The complete smelting and converting flowsheet involves a number of operations. The process selected for a particular feed and product requirement should be one which optimises the efficiency of the process, the cost of building and operating the technology and the long-term maintenance and productivity of the units.Ausmelt's approach to achieving an efficient process using its technology is described in relation to the smelting of copper concentrates for production-of blister copper.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode amI across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype cross well acoustic logging system and complementary tomogr`aphic image reconstruction software for the detection and delineation of abandoned underground mines and associated subsidence failure in relatively shallow environments. The logging system uses a piezoelectric, cylindrical bender as an acoustic source. A triaxial accelerometer assembly, designed to be rigidly locked in the borehole, is the receiver portion of the logging system. Both the source and receiver probes operate at high frequencies, thus providing short wavelengths capable of resolving small features in most rock types. A modified van with a dual-drum wireline winch, 4-channel data acquisition system, power amplifiers, and waveform generator supports field operation of the logging system. A field study was conducted at a test site in San Antonio, Texas, to demonstrate the cross well acoustic logging system. The underlying rock at the test site is similar to stratified sediments in coal measures. First- arrival travel times were interpreted by tomographic reconstruction of the velocity field in the two-dimensional cross section between the source and receiver boreholes. The resulting image correlates well with geological borehole logging data for the test site.

There exist several legislative provisions in N.S.W. which work together to control surface subsidence due to extraction of coal by underground methods. The important ones are the Coal Mining Act, Coal Mines Regulation Act, Mine Subsidence Compensation Act and Dams Safety Act. In addition, there are guidelines laid down by the Chief Inspector of Coal Mines for mining under and in the vicinity of tidal waters and the ocean. There are also conditions of coal mining leases and conditions of approvals given to undertake various methods of mining which stipulate further controls. The legislative provisions and relative controls are designed to minimise surface damage, ensure safety , of major public utilities, control- surface land use and compensate damage caused by subsidence as a result of coal mining operations. They aim at balanced and responsible development of our valuable coal resources consistent with adequate safeguards to surface improvements and natural features. The paper discusses in detail these legislative provisions and the mechanics of their operation with a view to emphasising the fact that underground coal mining operations are undertaken responsibly and in a planned and rational manner for the overall benefit of the community. Further, the paper aims to demonstrate the need for legislative measures and conditioning of mining operations to keep abreast of developments in the knowledge and skills of mining and subsidence engineers and continuing improvements in mining technologies. Likewise there is a need on the part of engineers and those associated with introduction of new technologies to appreciate the requirements and existence of legislative and other measures having a direct or indirect association with surface subsidence as a result of coal mining operation.

The Kidston Gold Mine i s located in northern Queensland some 2 Ukm northwest of Townsville. I t is the largest gold mine in Australia and produces approximately 25 percent of Australia's gold and one percent of the world's gold.Initially, traditional mining industry management approaches resulted in the rejection of what appeared to be an attractive low-grade deposit as an uneconomic proposition. The injection of coal as an auxiliary fuel in ironmaking blast furnaces has been introduced on many furnaces worldwide. This paper examines the present practice of coal injection and discusses future directions for the technology. This has been undertaken through the use of a heat and mass balance model which predicts the replacement rates of coke by coal and the effect of coal injection on blast furnace productivity. The results indicate that future pulverised coal injection could replace substantial quantities of metallurgical coke, but that the energy balance economics of individual steel plants will have a dominating influence on the future of the technology.

In-situ experiments were performed in a tunnel built in loess soil with the displace- ment components of the tunnel lining and the acceleration components of the tracks measured during the passing of trains. The measured parameters were then studied by the spectral method. As a result, the dynamic forces of trains was simulated numerically and a deter- ministic dynamic nonlinear analysis was carried out by means of finite element method. The results obtained by two different approaches were in fair coincidence. Results of the study indicate, that the low and medium frequency components of the dynamic train loading would be crucial for the dynamic responses of the tunnel lining and surrounding mass, and their effects would increase with the speed of passing trains within a certain range.
