Iron ore in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia varies in composition giving iron ore a range of densities. An accurate density figure of the material leads to accurate calculations of production throughput. Density studies of two separate iron ore mines were conducted in the Pilbara. Procedures and results are reported here.The Pilbara Region of Western Australia has a number of iron ore operations. Two mines have conducted density studies of their materials. The purpose for the studies was to determine an accurate in situ bulk density that could be applied to volume and tonnage calculations of the operation. It was identified that density was one culprit causing calculation variations. Density is an important figure used to estimate ore reserves, equipment requirements, production rates and indirectly costs and sales revenue. One study was conducted at Rio TintoÆs Robe River Mine based near the town of Pannawonica. Its Mesa J orebody is currently being mined and is a low-grade deposit of goethite and hematite (Burnham, 2003). A separate study was conducted at BHP BillitonÆs Yarrie Mine situated north of Newman and east of Pardoo. Its orebody consists of high grade formed by a supergene enrichment of cherty material and a burial metamorphism to produce hematite (Richardson, 2002). The method used to determine density was by large-scale samples using the pre-mining in situ volume of the material and the weight in tonnes after mining.

The Engineering Chemistry Division of the Government Chemical Laboratories of WA initiated an ongoing investigation into the possible utilisation of diatomites of this State. The work has shown that local diatomites can be beneficiated by hydro or pneumatic cyc- lone separator circuitry and that the better quality head materials can be upgraded by straight and flux calcination and associated processing to the equivalent of premium grade imported products. Western Australian diatomites vary con- siderably in quality, and the degree to which they can be upgraded and the yield of useful product are influenced by the proportion of impurities and the size, type, and degree of fragmentation of contained diatoms. Conseq- uently careful assessment of ore deposits will be necessary in order to relate ore reserves to planned production. The viability of commercial production from Western Australian resources would hinge on the establishment of markets - largely ex- port - capable of supporting a production level of the order of 30,000 tonnes per annum.

South Crofty's ventilation network is large and complex. Of the total exhaust air quantity 40% enters the mine by leakage routes through old workings, this air carries high concentrations of radon gas and results in the mine becoming a classified work place under the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1985. Improvements in the control of the ventilating air and dilution by increased air quantity have reduced the average contamination to aelow-0.2 WL. The major part of the radon originates from ground water inflows and from concentrations of radium within the mine with direct emanation from rock surfaces being negligible. Of 600 kBgs-1 total radon leaving the mine 93% cannot be accounted for from known and accessible sources.

Modern plate tectonic reconstruction of Mexico and Central America shows that the southeast-extend ing Precambrian backbone of Mexico, together with the east-flanking accreeted Huastecan (Appalachian-Caledonian) orogenic belt, are geotectonic elements practically absent in Central America, except west-ern and northern Guatemala and Belize, and contrib-uted little to the mineral potential of the entire region.The gradual accretion of the Cordilleran oro-genic belt took place against the western-south-western margin of the Precambrian backbone, and its consolidation required several tectonic events from the medial(?) Paleozoic to the end of the Mesozoic. The striking features of this "long-lived" orogenic belt are the massive sulphide min-eralization in the upper Paleozoic eugeoclinal as-semblage, the widespread gold occurrence in quartz veins in the lower Mesozoic volcanics and related intrusives, the carbonate-hosted silver-bearing lead-zince deposits of the Mississippi Valley-type (or Pine Point-type) around carbonate banks within the Lower Cretaceous back-arc miogeocline, that de-veloped over the Precambrian backbone and deeply-eroded Huastecan orogenic belt, the massive sul-phide (Pb-Zn) deposits in the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous sequence, transitional from miogeocline to eugeocline, which carry high grades in silver, and the iron deposits in this transitional facies, which are described in the literature as related to dioritic intrusives of Late Cretaceous age. Central America, south and southeast of the Mota-gua-Polochic fault system, forms part of the in-ternal zones of this orogenic belt.

Whole rock geodhemical analyses from samples of Potosi gneiss within the Willyama Supergroup have been utilised to identify geochemical trends towards Pb/Zn ore positions. Although the analyses come from disparate sources they have been incorporated in the data base only if locational, sampling, analytical, lithological and stratigraphic descriptors were reliable. These data have been statistically analysed using programmes of the GASP software package. A discriminant function has been derived which permits Potosi gneiss associated with the Pb/Zn lode horizons in the Broken Hill domain to be distinguished from Potosi gneiss in a similar stratigraphic position in the Maybell Domain. In the "near ore" position the Potosi gneiss has significantly lower mean Na2O and significantly higher mean MnO. Also mean Rb, CaO and K20 are higher and mean Sr lower. This discriminant function serves to identify areas prospective for Pb/Zn mineralisation. A second discriminant function based on MnO, Si02 and K20/Na20 gives a semi- quantitative indication of proximity to ore.

Constructed between 1885 and 1891, the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) in New York State is a 50 km long (31 mi) brick-lined tunnel conveying water from the Croton watershed north of New York City to distribution systems in the Bronx and Manhattan. Except at two siphons, the aqueduct operates as an open channel conduit from the New Croton Reservoir downstream 39 km (25 mi) to the Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bronx. The remaining 11 km (6 mi) is operated as a pressurised conduit and includes a major siphon, of circular cross-section, under the Harlem River. The aqueduct has a flow capacity of approximately 1100 million litres of water per day (13 m3/s or 290 million gallons per day) and supplies on average ten per cent of New York CityÆs drinking water. The CityÆs water supply system is operated and maintained by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). This paper covers the work done during the three main stages of the program to rehabilitate the entire NCA: inspections, design and rehabilitation. It also includes some of the more interesting structural findings of the original construction as well as documents and drawings from the NYCDEP archives. The rehabilitation program has been underway in phases since 1993, with inspections scheduled to minimise outages, allowing this strategic aqueduct to remain in service during critical seasonal periods. The open channel flow section of the aqueduct in the north is horseshoe shaped, with inside dimensions of 4.1 m (13.6 ft) in width and 4 m (13.5 ft) in height. The pressurised section is 3.7 m (12.3 ft) in diameter, and includes a 90 m (330 ft) deep siphon under the Harlem River. A total of 163 million bricks were used in the construction, enough to build a 48 km (30 mi) wall around Manhattan Island, 3 m (10 ft) thick and 15 m (50 ft) high.Between 1993 and 1997 a series of in-tunnel investigations were performed in the open channel portion of the NCA, consisting of field inspection, non-destructive geophysical testing, and coring of the brick liner. Between November 2004 and September 2005, a major inspection program was conducted to assess the condition of the 11 km (6 mi) long pressurised section and all shafts, headhouses and blow-off structures along the entire 50 km (31 mi) alignment. Inspection methods included using an underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with sonar and cameras to inspect the deep siphon, fibre optics examinations of probe holes drilled through and beyond the brick lining, and core holes and geophysical inspections to assess properties of the liner and behind-the-liner materials. A water pressure and test grouting program was conducted to assess methods and expected grout takes for the rehabilitation work in the pressurised sections. The rehabilitation program is anticipated to be completed in 2010.

The current emphasis within the mining industry to reduce the cost of production has stimulated interest in the field of maintenance and operational reliability of capital intensive mining equipuent. The failure consequences of these machines have major safety and economic implications for a mine operator. The reliability centered maintenance (RCM) approach has been found cost effective for equipment maintenance and for achieving high level system perform- ance by many organizations such as airline, military, chemical, process and manufac- turing industries. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe in brief the basic concepts of a RCM approach, the methods of RCM analysis and its cost effectiveness for maintenance of equipment. Since this approach is comparatively new for the mining industry, suitable examples are given to illustrate the case.

Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization at Nepean, Western Australia occurs within a small Archaean greenstone outlier in granite south of the main Coolgardie greenstone belt. Individual sulphide ore bodies are situated near the foot- wall contact of simply-differentiated en echelon ultramafic sills that have intruded a sequence of sulphide-bearing metasediments and amphibo- lites. The paper describes a detailed section through the No. 2 ultramafic sill and its associated sulphide ore zone, which gave Metals Exploration N.L. the first significant nickel discovery in the Nepean area in 1968. The sill is variable in thickness up to 30 m along a strike length of 600 m, and is truncated to the north by pegmatite intrusion and pinches out to the south. The body has border zones of pyroxenetic composition, now represented by felted aggregates of chlorite and amphibole, and a central peridotitic core in which olivine and orthopyroxene are concentrated towards the base. Textures within the peridotite are dominated by large lath-shaped olivine grains and their serpentine pseudomorphs, which delineate triangular areas composed of talc, chlorite, and amphibole. Orthopyroxene occurs in large ovoid patches and is often replaced by Talc.

This paper deals with the design and implementation of a 17 MW (nominal) surface cooling installation at Impala Platinum No 14 shaft located in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa.The cooling requirements included the installation of a surface ammonia refrigeration plant complete with the storage of hot and cold mine service water for underground use. It was also necessary to install a surface bulk air-cooling facility, which cools 400 kg/s of ventilation air going to the underground workings. Primary cooling is to the surface bulk air cooler. The cooling duty of a surface bulk air cooler is heavily dependent on the ambient wet-bulb temperature. Because of the daily wet-bulb temperature variation in this part of the world, use was made of a cold thermal storage facility of four million litres. The excess chilled water is stored during the night, for use by the main drilling shift during the day. This keeps the refrigeration machines as close as possible to full load during the summer, thus maximising the use of the capital expenditure. This paper discusses the control philosophy used to maximise the cooling output, as well as the thermal process. The project consisted of two phases resulting from the underground development phases of the mine. The first phase started in January 1999 and was commissioned by the end of the same year in record time. The final commissioning of the second phase took place at the end of 2002. The most difficult part of the construction phase was the tunnelling of a subsurface air duct from the bulk air cooler to the operating vertical shaft. This was done without disruption to the hoisting of men, material and ore in the shaft. Owing to the size of the refrigeration machines, the ammonia quantities involved and the application on a mine (no ammonia can go underground, either in the service water or in the mine air) special precautions had to be taken. South Africa has developed high standards for ammonia refrigeration plants used on mines, which will be partially dealt with in this paper.

Solution transport of gold and silver has occurred as a result of the chemical weathering of many Western Australian epigenetic gold deposits. Evidence for the remobilization of gold exists in the form of small crystalline octahedra, mustard gold, flake gold, and coatings on iron-oxide. This "secondary" gold is of high purity (low silver content). It is believed that the high chloride content of laterite profiles combined with the acid produced by the oxidation and hydrolysis (ferrolysis) of iron has caused dissolution of Au/Ag and Au/Te alloys. Gold, and less frequently silver, is subsequently reprecipitated in the profile nearby.Pyrite, which is a ubiquitous accessory of gold in vein or lode systems, is probably an important source of iron for the development of acidity. Where carbonate is abundant in the primary assemblage, neutralization directs the oxidation of sulphide to a path which produces thiosulphate, and an alternative type of Au/Ag oxidation process. Sulphide/carbonate ratios in the vein system, and adjacent wallrock are seen as important in determining the course and extent of remobilization in the oxidized zone of gold deposits.

Drainage of gas has been practiced overseas for almost half a century. Peal advances in drainage of gas to combat high emissions became practicable in the late fifties and early sixties when the technology was standardised to use it under a variety of mining and geological conditions. Today methane drainage is practiced in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Ibmania, U.S.S.R., China, Japan, Canada, U.S.A. and Mexico. Australia entered the list of countries using gas drainage on 3rd March, 1980 when the first full scale gas drainage system was set up and commissioned at West Cliff Colliery to drain gas from the Bulli Seam. Methods used in Europe are different from those used in North America, Japan and Australia mainly because of the different mining methods and also because of the limited number of seams under extraction, relatively new coal fields, and comparatively larger distance between the seams. In spite of the difference in the technique, the basic aim is the same and that is to improve ventilation and reduce ventilation costs, alleviate dangerous gas accummulation, overcome outburst hazards and ultimately make mining safer and more efficient. The story of the Penjom gold mine located near Kuala Lipis on the Malay Peninsular demonstrates the valuable role successful exploration companies can play in the development of the gold mining industry. Avocet Mining PLC ('Avocet') began exploration in the area on a limited budget in 1989, securing land tenure around the Penjom alluvial workings in July 1990. The lease granted, known as Block 7, formed part of a land package offered at the time by the Pahang State Government to develop the resources of the area. Until the late-1980s, the Kuala Lipis region, situated approximately 180 km north west of Kuala Lumpur, had restricted accessibility for security reasons precluding serious exploration or mining activity. The situation has changed dramatically in the 1990s, with several foreign explorers active in the Peninsular, targeting old alluvial and underground workings adjacent to the north-south trending Raub-Bentong Suture. Deeper drilling of these prospects has shown there is potential for both small- to medium-scale open pit mining and possibly underground operations, providing companies such as Avocet with an ideal mining investment opportunity.

"The most commonly used method of thick coal seam extraction in Polish deep mines is multislice longwall (MSL). In MSL stability of goaf in the roof as a result of previous extraction in upper slice is a major geotechnical consideration that must be managed.This paper outlines the results of a wide range of investigations carried out in three longwalls that were in operation in a multislice system using caving with additional fly ash goaf stowing. The longwalls were operated by Katowicki Holding Weglowy SA (KHWSA) in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin of Poland.Examinations were completed on the properties of goaf at the roof of longwalls ie measurements of strength parameters of the goaf material by means of a borehole hydraulic penetrometer, determination of the goaf condition by means of a borehole endoscope and laboratory testing of the caved rock. Strata bolting/dowelling reinforcement techniques are being reintroduced into the mines of the National Coal Board. There are strong reasons for the selection of the full hole anchorage principle of bolting and for the development of the wood/resin dowel. There are strong reasons also for the measurement of strata bed separation as the method of assessing the effectiveness of a roof bolting system. There are several designs of bolts. Instruments have been developed for investigation and control purposes. Different drilling and bolting machines have been employed in trial sites. In addition comparative laboratory model work has been conducted on simple non-bolted and bolted systems.

In 1556, Agricola noted that "a prudent owner, before he buys shares, ought to go to the mine and carefully examine the nature of the vein, for it is very important that he should be on his guard lest fraudulent sellers of shares should deceive him"(1). In today's world, the owner rarely has the opportunity to visit the mine and, instead of reading about the `nature of the vein' in annual reports, prospectuses, government publications, et cetera he sees the words `reserves' and `resources'. Unfortunately, the subject of reserves and resources has become increasingly complex and Canadians, along with their counterparts in Australia and elsewhere, are still struggling with definitions which will attempt to cover all conceivable circumstances from national or regional resource endowment to the material to be extracted next week from a given stope or open pit bench. The providers and recipients of reserve and resource data are: - Government agencies who are concerned with questions of national endowment, strategic use of raw materials and other questions of public policy. - Stockholders who have a vested interest in the basic assets of their companies. - Financiers who are concerned about the security of their loans. - Regulatory bodies whose function is to protect a frequently naive investor from unscrupulous practices. - Management, at head office and on-site, who need basic information for decision-making, whether it be to open up a new mine, expand or close an existing operation, acquire or merge with other entities, or, more mundanely, for routine mine planning. To satisfy their demands with unanimously accepted definitions is a formidable task but, it is my impression that, little by little, a concensus appears to be growing within the industry.

The techniques used by the State Electricity Commis- sion of Victoria to handle and store brown coal in the both the raw coal and boiler bunkers are outlined. These tech- niques were adopted in agreement with the science of modern bulk solids handling. By successful balance between practical requirements and bulk solid handling system design require- ments the Commission expects to confidently attain reliable coal flow even for the most adverse of coal flow properties. Attainment of this goal demanded full attention to channel detail selection. An outcome of this attention has been the development of a novel bunker and discharge arrangement for handling extremely difficult to handle coals. Due to the novel features of this slot bunker outlet arrangement it's ad- vantages and disadvantages are discussed.

We present plate tectonic reconstructions, showing that porphyry-type ore deposits are spatially and temporally linked to ridge subduction. A reconstruction of the Peruvian subduction system reveals an immediate metallogenic response to the arrival of the Nazca Ridge at the subduction trench, followed by southward migration of the zone of metallogenic activity due to the lateral migration of the zone of ridge subduction. A similar pattern is recognised in central Chile , where the spatio-temporal distribution of giant ore deposits coincides with the arrival of the Juan Fernandez hotspot chain at the subduction zone. We conclude that there is a spatial and temporal link between ridge subduction and ore deposit formation, with high metal fluxes concentrated in zones of ridge subduction. Thus, the recognition of tectonic patterns associated with ridge subduction can provide insights into predictive mineral discovery by enhancing our ability to predict the position of large mineral deposits in other modern and ancient orogens. Investigations were carried out to understand the effect of liquid viscosity (u = 1 x 10-3 - 5 x 10-' Ns/m2) on the size of primary bubbles formed at high gas injection rates (Q = 100 - 1000 cc/s, U = 0.04 - 0.42 mach) under room temperature conditions using flush tuyere (3 mm diameter) operating vertically upward. Tuyere pressure fluctuations were correlated to the mode of bubble formation by simultaneously filming the bubble and the corresponding tuyere pressure fluctuations displayed on an oscilloscope screen. A simple mathematical treatment is presented to estimate bubble size in viscous liquids. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental measurements.

The U. S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines, in conjunction with a cooperator in the U. S. A., are developing a new highwall mining system (HMS) for coal extraction in unreclaimed and active contour strip mines. This prototype system is comprised of a computer-based remote control (CBRC) system to monitor and remotely control a thin-seam continuous miner (TSCM) and a 76*m long multiple-unit continuous haulage (MUCH) conveying system, plus other manually- operated support equipment located on the highwall bench. The TSCM and MUCH coal haulage system are both controlled remotely by a single operator in a protective enclosure at an ergonomically- designed workstation located on the highwall bench. Two other personnel work on the bench to operate other support equipment. Full-scale mock-up fabrications were employed in the design of the unique remote control operator workstation. The HMS should allow the safe and economical exploitation of increased coal reserves where they outcrop in hilly regions of the United States. It should also be competitive with conventional auger mining and other coal extraction techniques, with a productivity goal at a highwall site of 20 tonne/man-h. Extensive simulated surface tests of the miner and haulage system should be completed in early 1988 at Bureau test facilities at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These will be followed by actual coal production trials of the entire system in 1988 at a highwall site in West Virginia/USA.

Minerals similar to the indicator minerals used in kimberlite exploration are widespread in the Cainozoic alkali basalts of north Queensland. Magnesian ilmenite, pyrope garnet, chrome diopside, chrome spinel, phlogopite and zircon were recovered from most of the localities examined. The occurrence of these minerals creates significant problems when indicator minerals are used for diamond exploration. Basaltic ilmenite is visually similar to kimberlitic ilmenite. Untransported grains are rounded and have pitted surfaces. Basaltic ilmenite grains often have exsolution lamellae and reaction rims of titanomagnetite. Although kimberlitic and basaltic ilmenite are chemically similar, basaltic ilmenite grains are usually less magnesian than their kimberlitic counterparts. Basaltic ilmenite contains very little Cr203. Pyrope garnet occurs as megacrysts and in a variety of xenolith lithologies in north Queensland basalts. Most basaltic garnet is Cr-poor and comparable with kimberlitic garnet from Groups 3 and 5 of Dawson and Stephens (1975). Wine-purple, chrome-bearing garnet is common in kimberlite but rare in basalt.
