The securing of a reliable water supply for a prospective mine in the North West Queensland Mineral Province is usually one of the most influential factors in determining the mine's feasibility. The Ernest Henry Mine required a reliable water supply to serve a demand estimated at feasibility stage to be up to 20 ML/day. Numerous options were considered before a decision was made to construct a 113 km long pipeline from Lake Julius as this was the most cost effective, reliable source of supply. The North West Queensland Water Pipeline is a multi-user, Queensland government funded project initially supplying up to 7000 ML/year of water from Lake Julius to Ernest Henry Mine, with provision made for expansion to serve future users in the region. This paper discusses the history of the pipelineÆs development, together with a summary of the scheme's design features. Environmental and licensing requirements, construction and operational issues are also discussed.

The Westerschelde tunnel will be the first permanent road link between the Dutch regions of South Beveland and South Flanders. Two tunnel tubes, each 6.6 km long, will be driven using the shield tunnelling method. The difficult ground conditions and a water pressure of up to 6.5 bar make great demands on the design. This paper describes the problems and their solutions.

Although significant advances have been made in understanding the mechanics of pit slopes, numerical modelling hasnÆt significantly impacted on the reliability of the design process. It is well known that legacy modelling approaches donÆt simulate large slopes well. In recent times, the emergence of very large finite element (FE) models with more than ten million degrees of freedom and the ability to simulate a large number of discrete structures, has allowed a step change in the simulation precision for slopes. The model size allows global and local effects to be realistically simulated in one model for the first time and the process can be better integrated into normal open pit slope engineering processes. Some examples of simulation of very large open pits are shown that demonstrate the challenges and some recent advances in modelling large slope behaviour. Significant limitations in the current measurement and observation regimes of open pits have been identified.

The Bong Mieu Project lies within the Pre-Palaeozoic Kontum Craton near the southern margin of the regional Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture. The Suture and accompanying Truongson Fold Belt of Indosinian age host significant gold and base-metal bearing districts including OlympusÆ other project at Phuoc Son to the west of Bong Mieu and OxianaÆs Sepon project in Laos. The Bong Mieu Project is located some 90 km south of Da Nang and some 30 km south-west of Tam Ky, the provincial capital of Quang Nam province in central Vietnam. The project area is covered by an Investment Licence of some 30 km2 which was granted in 1991 and a mining permit of some 365 ha granted in 1992. Several mesothermal, gold-silver deposits with assigned resources are present on the property. Deposits with assigned resources contain some 615 000 ounces of gold in situ. These are at Ho Gan and Ho Ray which are potentially exploitable by open-pit mining and Nui Kem which is potentially exploitable by underground mining. Newly discovered extensions to the known deposits at Ho Gan, Ho Ray and Nui Kem, and several other new prospects, are currently being investigated by drilling. The Ho Gan mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein, as well as intrusive breccia hosted style. Nui Kem mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein style. The Ho Ray mineralisation is of skarn (gold-bismuth-tungsten) and lesser quartz vein style. The deposits straddle and flank the east-west trending Bong Mieu Anticline which trends through the central portion of the Investment Licence. In this paper the geology of the deposits, details of resources, results of recent exploration on the Investment Licence and recent engineering and mining studies at Ho Gan are briefly reviewed.

The internal stratigraphy of the Marillana Creek palaeochannel Tertiary channel iron deposits (CID) in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia was initially defined in the 1980s and redefined as the Marillana Formation in the early 2000s. Recent drilling, open pit mining and field observations in the Western deposits at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Marillana Creek tenements have revealed some additional details on the extent and detail of some units of the Marillana Formation stratigraphy in this area. The drill hole data at Western 1 South has identified a number of features either not previously documented in this area or whose significance has not been adequately recognised, including a denatured zone at the base of the Upper CID of the Barimunya Member, and variations in the lithology within the Munjina Member at the base of the channel. Additionally, the Western 4 pit walls show evidence of a significant near-surface clay horizon and overlying CID, which are suggested to be the equivalent of the Iowa Eastern Member in the Eastern deposits. The deposition of this unit was most likely driven by a regional climatic disruption rather than a change in sediment source area alone. The nature of the Weeli Wolli Formation-derived goethitic peloids in the Western deposits may explain the more extensive denaturing in the Western Lower CID of the Barimunya Member. In contrast, the more robust nature of the haematitic-cored pelletoids in the Central and Eastern deposits has resulted in a less denatured Lower CID in these areas. Such work reveals the value of and need for geologistsÆ ongoing face mapping observations and detailed drill hole logging, and cautions against not querying previously accepted interpretations.

Particle breakage is an essential part of mineral processing. The aim is to reduce run of mine mineral ore to an optimal size for liberating target minerals and for subsequent recovery by separation processes such as flotation. This size reduction is typically accomplished in a series of stages in a grinding circuit tailored to the properties of the particular mine ore. Commonly this involves two or more classes of equipment starting with crushers, followed by SAG mills and then sometimes ball mills. Occasionally, high pressure grinding rolls or other novel devices are substituted. Broadly, energy consumption increases and energy efficiency decreases with the fineness of the material produced by each piece of equipment. For many operations, up to 50 or 60 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions from a plant arise from the operation of the comminution circuit with the majority produced by the finest grinding parts, such as the SAG and ball mills. Wear of mill liners and grinding media also add to greenhouse gas emissions generated by their manufacture. The need for continual cost reduction and increasing regulatory and social pressure relating to greenhouse emissions create a strong need for improvements in comminution energy efficiency. Traditional experimental and modelling approaches are not well placed to create the required insights into comminution fundamentals or facilitate radical step changes in performance. This paper discusses the role that advanced modelling (based on coupled DEM and CFD) can play in improving the energy efficiency and performance of existing mainstream grinding equipment and in the development of new ones with radically superior performance. Achieving this goal will also require an improved understanding of ore breakage and methods to include sufficiently realistic breakage models within the DEM models. Developmental issues for the modelling and the critical need for validation of the advanced model features are highlighted.

PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) operates the Batu Hijau copper and gold mine and process plant on the island of Sumbawa, Nusa Tenggara (Barat)  NTB, Indonesia. The plant consists of a nominal capacity 120 000 t/d conventional semi-autogenous ball milling crushing (SABC) circuit followed by sulfide flotation to produce a bulk copper concentrate for sale. Process control is effected by a plant wide distributed control system that overlays an extensive integrated programable logic controller (PLC) framework. The system is enhanced by a supervisory expert control system.Since plant commissioning in September 1999, over US$4 million has been expended as part of a systematic continuous improvement approach to optimise plant control performance. Works completed to date include: redesign and upgrade of architecture of the control system to ensure long-term system reliability, security and upgradeability and to provide a suitable platform for advanced control; integration of supervisory and advanced control tools, techniques and instrumentation; and implementation of sound network communication and plant data reporting tools. This paper outlines the evolution of process control and associated systems and tools that contribute to successful operation and ongoing performance optimisation at Batu Hijau.

The Angas Zinc Mine (Angas) is a poly-metallic, underground mine in the Adelaide Hills that has been developed through arguably one of the most volatile financial time periods in living memory. From boom times during the commencement of the project, the global financial crisis (GFC) through the stabilisation of the operating period and then a subdued capital market for the period where mine life extension was targeted, the financial environment has always presented a different set of challenges. Indeed even the Underground Operators’ Conferences that have been held across the span of the project allude to these changes: ‘Boom and Beyond’, Launceston (2008); ‘Safe, Innovative and Sustainable’, Canberra (2011) and ‘Managing the Margin’ in Adelaide (2014).Angas gives a rare opportunity to see the entire life-of-mine of a project and its economic performance within a relatively short time frame. Angas, owned and operated by Terramin Australia Ltd (Terramin), will have undergone resource estimation drill out, feasibility study, permitting, commissioning, operating and completion and rehabilitation all within a period of approximately ten years. A number of sensitivities of the project were tested, particularly in the bankable feasibility study (BFS) stage and the aim of this paper is to identify the factors that impacted the operations profitability the most, whether they were identified preproduction or not. The key sensitivities assessed in the BFS were typical of similar studies, including operating costs, metal recoveries, capital costs, zinc prices, lead prices and exchange rates. The manner in which these sensitivities presented themselves in real life were not as anticipated and modelled in the feasibility study and were also heavily impacted by technical challenges.CITATION:Harris, A, Laughton, K and Ranford, J, 2014. This paper describes the MillMapper technology developed for condition monitoring of liners and other operational parameters in grinding mills used for mineral comminution, by presenting a case study of its application. MillMapper provides maintenance engineers, operations managers and process and plant metallurgists with quantitative, accurate and reliable condition monitoring data for informed decision making regarding the maintenance and metallurgical aspects of such mills. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanners for the capture of three-dimensional surface representations inside a mill during a shutdown so as to determine shell, feed and discharge liner thickness at a resolution of several million data points, a procedure that nominally takes five minutes to complete. Once several data sets over time have been collected inside a mill, MillMapper can be used for liner wear, liner wear zone, liner weight, ball charge volume, ball charge weight and intelligent profile tracking over time. Liner tracking in combination with site defined reline and failure criteria and with throughput tonnage data is utilised for change out prediction of each separate liner segment type.

Active EM subsurface imaging is a proprietary technique developed by Marschall Acoustics Instruments Pty Limited (MAI) to image subsurface features at depths useful for the mining industry. Similar in field operations to high resolution seismic surveying, the Active EM technique employs electromagnetic energy rather than elastic wave energy. Received backscattered energy in the Active EM technique is thus due to differences and contrasts in electromagnetic permeability and permittivity in the subsurface, analogous to LamTÆs constants in elastic wave imaging. Carrying the analogy to seismic imaging even further, the Active EM method employs high power transmissions of very wide-band coded signals of a controlled polarisation. Likewise, the array pattern and polarisation of the receiving transducers is also tightly controlled. Thus, in a certain mathematical sense, Active EM is the electromagnetic equivalent of high power high resolution vibroseis seismic surveying. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. With recovery being important in optimising the business performance of a laterite and sulfide plant and with water being a precious resource in Australia, there has been increased pressure for companies to improve their methods of improving liquor recovery and improving water recovery in both laterite and sulfide plants. This has resulted in new control technologies such as the Manta Cube being applied on countercurrent decantation (CCD) and thickening circuits which is necessary to improve stability and optimise the liquor and water recovery in these processing plants. This paper describes the benefit of applying these new control techniques on CCD and thickening circuits in some of the mineral processing plants in Australia.

The Central Victorian Goldfield is a world-class field located in Victoria, Australia. It is currently undergoing a revival through activities in the Bendigo, Ballarat, Tarnagulla, Maldon, Castlemaine and other fields. Sediment-hosted auriferous gold-quartz reefs that are structurally and geometrically complex dominate the region. To date, no remote methods have been developed to assist in the targeting of the discrete high-grade oreshoots that characterise the mineralisation. An understanding of the structural setting and controls, and thus likely frequency of repetition of oreshoots remains the main exploration tool. Gold within the reefs is generally characterised by both its coarse nature (>100 up to 10 000 microns) and erratic distribution; as a result, most of the Victorian deposits are classed as high- to extreme-nugget effect systems. This characteristic ensures that mineralisation is very challenging to explore, evaluate and exploit. The key issues facing the explorer and miner are related to effective sampling, and definition of geological and grade continuity, and ultimately grade and tonnage. Tonnage can often be estimated to a reasonable level of confidence, whereas the grade estimate generally carries a medium- to high-level of uncertainty. In these deposits, surface diamond drilling alone is generally only able to define an Inferred Mineral Resource, with underground development, closely spaced in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining required to define Ore Reserves. The extraction of gold from ores is relatively simple, based on the coarse nature and hence amenability to gravity recovery. Ground conditions and the need for in-stope grade control (eg mapping, sampling etc), generally point toward mechanised cut-and-fill as the primary stoping method in the region. To potential investors this style of mineralisation has been viewed as high risk, because of the associated low confidence in the grade estimate, general paucity of Ore Reserves at mining start-up and need for underground development at the Feasibility Stage.

The Bendigo Goldfield is AustraliaÆs second largest goldfield, having produced 22 million ounces of gold between 1851 and 1954. Development of the modern decline mine, initially for underground exploration and bulk sampling, commenced in 1998. The project is targeting new reefs below and along from historic workings beneath the city of Bendigo. The major technical challenge for the project is the inability to solely use drill core gold assays to estimate the grade of reefs, due to the coarsegrained nature of gold mineralisation, known as the nugget effect. In 2002, a program of bulk sampling commenced, resulting in the development of factors for converting drill hole grades to in situ reef grades. In mid 2006 commercial production commenced following the construction of a 600 000 t/yr processing plant adjacent to the Kangaroo Flat Mine portal, with plant feed being derived from four reefs in the Sheepshead and Deborah lines of reef. In early 2007 it became clear that the initial ore reserves had been overestimated, leading to an immediate change of strategy from production to exploration. A cash conservation program was also put in place. Exploration refocused onto the more historically productive Garden Gully and New Chum lines of reef, whilst a new grade estimation tool based primarily on the visual assessment of drill core was implemented. Immediate exploration success occurred with the discovery of four reefs in the Garden Gully line in early 2007. Successful step-out drilling during the year led to the decision to undertake trial mining in Gill reef. Trial production commenced in June 2008 and includes the processing of discrete ore blocks and the introduction of selective mining techniques. This paper examines the steps that have been taken to refocus exploration and to gain confidence in new exploration results, particularly through the visual grade estimation technique and assessment of trial mining Gill reef on the Garden Gully line. In addition, project factors relating to human skills, community relationships and financial management in a dynamic external environment are also addressed.

The Mt Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Following the evolution of the mine plan through a number of stages, the ‘sublevel shrinkage (SLS) with continuous fill’ mining method was implemented in 2010 to extract the Mt Wright orebody. The production front in this mining method is similar to a sublevel cave (SLC) operation; however, backfill is placed into the top of the production zone as opposed to requiring the overlying strata to cave.Continuous fill to replace the void created by extracting the ore was required to manage the potential risks associated with the proximity of infrastructure to the footwall, associated long-term stability and air blast potential due to the limited ‘cavability’ of the material within the cave zone. The available fill material was sourced from a disused waste dump from a previous open pit operation, which introduced further technical and economic risks associated with dilution from ‘no grade’ broken material. Procedures and processes to manage these risks have been incorporated into the operation of the mine.Despite encountering a number of challenges, the SLS method has been in use for approximately three years at Mt Wright and has proven to be viable economically, technically and operationally. The Dampier Port Upgrade Project (DPU) involves an upgrade to Hamersley IronÆs Parker Point iron ore port facility at Dampier, Western Australia. The $US700 million DPU Project will increase Hamersley IronÆs shipping capacity at Dampier from 72 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 116 Mtpa. The DPU Project comprises a new car dumper facility and rail spur, an upgrade to the existing stockyard and conveying system, a new screen-house and a 450 m wharf extension with two new shipping berths and a new ship-loader. This paper discusses the innovative design and construction of the new car dumper facility, which is capable of automatically unloading 240 car iron ore trains at a rate of 10 000 t/h. The facility design is unique compared to more conventional designs currently in operation, and greatly improves operation and maintenance functions.

Unraveling geological complexity and understanding geological risk are critical components of the challenge that face any mining or exploration venture. This understanding is essential to the successful selection of mineralised domains on which grade estimation relies, so knowledge of the geological characteristics of the mineralised domains is vitally important. æNuggetyÆ mineralisation introduces a higher level of risk and geological observation and intuition may be the only option to ensure that opportunities are realised and ore/waste characterisation is undertaken successfully. Mineralisation at the world class Sunrise Dam gold mine contains a significant coarse gold component, which has necessitated the development of a systematic visual approach to decision making that enables geological staff to determine the potential gold grade in the absence of assay results, and in those instances when assay results appear implausible. The development of the Mineralisation (MZ) Code at Sunrise Dam has assisted in reducing the risk of misclassifying ore as waste and enabled geological control to prevail with confidence where complexity and ambiguity existed.

The Warraua and Mount Poole Inliers form part of a discontinuous series of basement complexes in the northwestern corner of New South Wales. The Inliers comprise mainly clastic sediments of low metamorphic grade (Wonominta Beds) and minor sills, dykes and intrusives, particularly within the Mount Poole lnJier. The Warratta rnlier has received attention due to the occurrence of auriferous quartz-veins where reef mining activities havetaken place.The deformational history of the Warratta and Mount Poole Inljers is characterised by a continuous subhorizontally WSW-ENE directed compression. Deformation was associated with the development of NNW-trending and steeply west-dipping major faults, which bound or biscct the inliers. Chevron folds and a penetrative axial planar cleavage characterise the deformational architecture and document crustal shorterung of at least 40 per cent. In zones adjacent to the major faults and within pelitic and semi-pelitic uruts, a multiple deformational evolution becomes apparent, comprising two events (D1 and D2). Deformational structures considered significant in this study were the result of D1. Tight, northeast-vergent fold patterns FI' and associated axjal plane cleavage SI' and reverse dip-slip movements at major faults indicate early northeast-directed thrusting during D1. This was followed by dextral strike-slip deformation displayed by tight, recumbent folds, en-echelon fold patterns (F2'), a northeast trending crenulation cleavage (52'), and two sets of second order faults, the latter showing high angular relationship to the major faults. A final stage of the deformational history (D2) is represented by WSW-ENE trending kink folds (F2).Auriferous quartz veins, predominantly occurring within pelitic and semi-pelitic units, were generated syntectorucally during the early deformational event (D1) in the course of commencing development of cleavage (S2'). Vein textures point towards vein formation by repeated hydrauJjc fracturing and fracture healing (crack-seal process), and by simple accretionary vein growth. Folded pelite-dominated horizons, considered as low permeability units, are suggested preferential sites where migrating metamorphic Ouids pooled and were trapped, causing high fluid pressure.Hydraulic fracturing and vein precipitation was controlled by lithology and structural constraints such as cleavage.K-Ar dates of approximately 440 Ma (Benambran Orogeny) marking the peak of metamorphism, and coinciding with the development of cleavage S1', also indicate the time of auriferous quartz-vein formation. A period of deformation of at least 30 Ma is proposed for the development of cleavage S1', as constrained by K-Ar dating and the intrusion of a syntectonic granitoid, the Tibooburra Granodiorite.

SITUATED in the county of Manchcster, in Northern Eyre's Peninsula, the Iron Knob ore-deposits form the basis of the industry. These deposits are connected by the Iron Knob tramway to the port of Whyalla, aal miles distant, on the western shore of Speneer Gulf,and to-day another tramway is under construction to link up with the same port, a second group of iron ore leases known as Iron Baron, which is situated 18 miles south of Iron Knob. Fig. 1 indicates the geographical relationship of these three places, Iron Knob, Iron Baron, and Whyalla, which together comprise this field of the company's activities.

Pasminco Century MineÆs slurry pipeline was commissioned in November 1999. It currently transports zinc and lead concentrate slurries in batch form to the Port facility, 304 km away in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Pipeline and the Port have gone through several stages of continuous improvement to match the successful ramp-up of the concentrator. Improvements in the Pipeline and Port Operations have included: commissioning of the first slurry pipeline that delivers two products in the same pipeline in batch mode; management of batches throughout the pipeline and port system to minimise cross contamination of both concentrates; operation of the slurry pipeline to achieve high availability of the system; operation of the pump station interfaced with preventive maintenance to minimise unplanned shutdowns; continuous monitoring of pressures throughout the single-station, 304 km slurry pipeline; redesign of the Rotary screw feeder; redesign of the Dryer Control System; installation of a larger Induced Draft Fan; optimisation of the dryer internals to achieve a product of narrow size distribution and pellet integrity; redesign of the stockpile ventilation system; and the development of a surface sealant. This paper describes the early commissioning of both the Port and the Pipeline and the continuous learning and Quality Improvement Project initiated at the Port to focus on concentrate quality given the propensity of the fine concentrate to self-heat during storage.

The Pic de Fon iron oxide deposit is a potential major new source of iron ore, located at the southern end of the Simandou range in eastern Guinea on the West African Craton. The deposit is hosted by banded iron formations (BIFs) within a supracrustal sequence, which lies unconformably upon a crystalline basement. The host BIFs and shales have been metamorphosed up to staurolite-grade itabirite and phyllite respectively. Stratigraphic relationships are obscured by polyphase deformation, although the sequence appears to comprise a lower phyllite(-minor quartzite) unit and transitional phyllite-iron formation overlain by three itabirite units. It is the itabirite units, selectively enriched to iron grades in excess of 65 per cent Fe (with low deleterious elements), that constitute the Pic de Fon deposit. Samples acquired from exploration diamond drill holes and outcrop across the deposit have been collected to investigate the Pic de Fon lithologies and iron-rich material types. Initial research techniques have included geological mapping, reflected light microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and ICP-AES geochemistry. The aim is to develop a model for deposit genesis that may assist future exploration and deposit exploitation planning. Results to date have identified a variety of hematite textures, which include recrystallised trellis, interlobate and granoblastic hematite after magnetite. In addition, fine-grained bladed to acicular microplaty hematite appears to both replace itabirite banding and infill porosity. Field relationships indicate a structural control of microplaty hematite development. Geochemistry and XRD results suggest a loss of silica with negligible iron addition during the conversion of itabirite to ore grade mineralisation. The enrichment process(es) is also accompanied by a gradual increase in K, Mg, Na, (Ca and Al).
